P. THARYAN ix glorious years and the battle is almost won! The October 2016 issue of Motown India is our sixth anniversary issue. To have survived the onslaught of internet based e-commerce models in the garb of news sites, the proliferation of half
baked blogs and erratic internet based models, is something that Motown India is proud of. The print version of Motown India is doing better than many of its rival publications. No, this is not a mega thick edition. I personally do not believe in it. Today, when we do not have time to read the daily newspaper and where internet is jammed with millions of news from topics as diverse as sex and cars, I personally believe that only a slim fit magazine can find itself endearing to the reading class. This anniversary issue is slim and has the right amount of news that is bound to be read and appreciated. I can only thank my readers, my friends in the auto industry, good folks in the advertisement agencies and our well wishers for our success. Motown India has today grown into a mature auto magazine which has leveraged its strengths in the digital space. The magazine’s YouTube channel is among the leading channels for reviews of cars and bikes. Motown India is also the exclusive contributor of vehicle reviews to Business Standard newspaper, a respected and leading financial daily in the country. The BS Weekend news is also distributed in Indigo Airlines flights in a tabloid form. We have indeed come a long way in these last six years. Thank you all. From the entire Motown India team, we appreciate all your support! www.facebook.com/MotownIndia @MotownIndia www.youtube.com/MotownIndia

The new Huracán Avio was unveiled by Andrea Baldi, General Manager Asia-Pacific Region, Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A and Sharad Agarwal, HeadLamborghini India. Inspired by the powerful jets of the aeronautical world, Lamborghini Huracán Avio pays tribute to the Air Force and their countless achievements over the years. Huracán Avio price starts at Rs 3.71 crores (Ex-showroom). Manufactured in a limited run of only 250, this special edition’s name, colours and materials pay tribute to the world of aviation and aeronautics. The Avio has all the technical specifications that have made the Huracán a great success: aspirated 610 HP, 5.2 litre, V10 engine; 7-speed gearbox with double clutch; hybrid chassis in aluminum and carbon fiber; a power/ weight ratio of only 2.33 kilograms per hp and breathtaking performance: 0 to 100 km/h in a

exterior details such as the tops of the side member, the side view mirrors and the lip on the front spoiler. A double stripe, again in white or grey, runs along the roof and down the front bonnet. The door panels further identify the special Avio version with the logo L63, where L stands for Lamborghini and ‘63 is the year the company was founded. A tricolour cockade, the symbol distinguishing nationality used in aeronautics, is placed between the letter and the number. The interiors alternate black leather with a special Alcantara,
which is also in black but boasts a laser-engraved hexagonal motif, available for the first time on the Avio. The material covers the central section of the seat, the armrest, the knee support and part of the door panel, and is enhanced with contrasting stitching in white. The L63 logo is embroidered by hand onto the sides of the seats. The interior color and trim can also be customised through the Ad Personam programme. The first diesel heart from Bentley now in Bentayga Bentley Motors has announces full details of the first diesel model in the iconic British brand’s history – the Bentayga Diesel. At the heart of the world’s fastest and most powerful luxury diesel SUV is an all-new, technologically advanced, triple-charged, 4.0-litre, 32-valve V8 engine. Developing 429 bhp and 900 Nm of torque, the Bentayga Diesel hits a top speed of 270 km/h and can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. Bentley’s Crewe-based engineers have developed a V8 powertrain to deliver an authentic Bentley driving experience. Peak torque is available from very early in the rev range (just 1,000 rpm), which makes progress in the Bentayga Diesel truly effortless. New clean technology gives the Bentayga Diesel the lowest CO2 emissions of any Bentley, as well as a range of over 1,000 km– allowing owners to, for example, drive from London to Verbier, Bordeaux or the Scottish Highlands on a single tank. Inside, the Bentayga Diesel retains the innovative features, advanced technologies and handcrafted luxury for which the Bentley Bentayga is renowned.
Customer deliveries will begin in Europe early next year, with entry into Russia, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan planned across the rest of 2017. The Bentayga Diesel retains the dynamic performance of the Bentayga W12, while introducing clean technologies and enhanced range. The next-generation 4.0-litre V8 engin is mated to a ZF eightspeed automatic transmission. Variable-geometry, sequential twin-scroll turbochargers are powered by the exhaust gases,

while a third electric supercharger – powered by Bentley’s innovative 48V system – spools up within 30 microseconds to eliminate turbo lag. The effect is effortless, seamless power delivery across the entire engine-speed range – the quintessential Bentley driving experience. An immense amount of torque is available from very low speeds, with peak torque achieved from just 1,000 rpm, for both seamless on-road performance and exemplary off-roading ability. The immediate flow of power complements the traditional,
class-leading refinement and performance customers have come to expect. The bespoke exhaust system has been acoustically engineered to be as quiet and refined as possible. The addition of Selective Catalytic Reduction contributes to lower nitrous oxides. Combined with Bentley’s stop-start system; CO2 emissions of 210 g/km; and a range of over 1,000 km between fuel stops, this technology puts the Bentayga Diesel at the forefront of advanced engine efficiency.

CAR NEWS Porsche 911 GT3 RS limited edition unveiled in India Porsche has unveiled the new 911 GT3 RS in India at the Porsche Centre Bengaluru. With a lap time of seven minutes and 20 seconds, the new model beats the historic record achieved by the Carrera GT super sports car on the North Loop of the Nürburgring by nine seconds. This is a limited edition car and the only one in India. The 911 GT3 RS is powered by a four-litre six-cylinder engine with 500 hp and 480 Newton metres of torque, combined with a specially developed PDK transmission. The car with the naturally aspirated engine with direct fuel injection accelerates the car from zero to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and to 200 km/h in 10.9 seconds. Functions such as declutching by “paddle neutral” – which is
comparable to pressing the clutch with a conventional manual gearbox – and speed limiting by the Pit Speed button have been customised for motorsport use. They give drivers more freedom in terms of driving dynamics, while also providing them with more assistance when driving on a circuit racetrack. The 911 GT3 RS roof is made of magnesium; carbon fibre is used for the engine and luggage compartment lids, and other lightweight components are made of alternative materials. This makes the RS model around ten kilograms lighter than the 911 GT3. In addition, the lightweight roof lowers the sports car’s centre
of gravity which improves its excellent lateral dynamics. The body comes from the 911 Turbo, and it signifies the model’s status as the closest road-legal race car
with its RS-specific aerodynamic add-on parts. The front spoiler lip, which extends close to the road, and the large rear wing reinforce its dominant look.

Matrix LED headlights which are permanently on high beam, ideally illuminate the road ahead without dazzling other road users by switching off individual LEDs. The engine is mated to a seven-
speed S tronic transmission, and an advanced infotainment system. The car has been priced at Rs 52,75,000 ex-showroom New Delhi and Maharashtra. The new Audi A6 Matrix 35 TFSI comes with Audi’s new design language and enhanced equipment level. The car is powered by a 1.4 litre TFSI four cylinder engine with new 7 speed S tronic transmission. While 0 to 100kmph comes in just 8.5 seconds, the top speed is 210kmph.It is 95 kg lighter than its predecessor due to adoption of intelligent material mix. Fuel average is around 17.84km per litre. The new engine is in an in-line 4 cylinder format and puts out 150 horses from 5000-6000 rpm and 250 Newton meters of torque from 1500-3500 rpm. ust the other day, Jeep, an up market brand of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles launched a handful of Jeep products in India. These included the iconic Wrangler SUV and the Grand Cherokee in three different variants—Limited Trim, Summit and SRT. We got our hands on the SRT which is the most powerful of the lot and the most expensive. This vehicle is powered by a 6.4 litre, Hemi V8, petrol, which produces massive doses of power and torque. The Jeep has a legacy so awesome, that the wars we fought in the past would have looked like boring arm wrestling matches had it not been for the rugged looking Jeep (Willys) vehicles that transported brawny US soldiers with their machine guns and pistols to the war front. The hardy design of the Jeep has since been copied by so many vehicle manufacturers in India that an ordinary onlooker is bound to get confused trying to spot the real Jeep!
www.motownindia.com
The moment I set my eyes on the Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl coloured Grand Cherokee SRT, the most powerful and technologically advanced Jeep ever built, I was bowled over by its girth and design element. And later in the day when I drove this mammoth vehicle, I was truly impressed by this fleet-footed vehicle. It’s not just a brawny beast; it’s a well mannered one which offers dollops of luxury.
EXTERIOR The front of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT gives an imposing look with its seven rectangular slats that make up the front
grille. The adaptive Bi-Xenon high intensity discharge (HD) headlamps, the signature daytime running lamps and the premium fog lamps all add to the good looks of the vehicle. These head lamps come with auto high beam control. Not to miss are the dual heat extractors on the hood which gives aerodynamically brilliant styling to the front portion of the vehicle. The huge vehicle sits on 20 inch polished 5-spoke Goliath wheels with Pirelli tyres which come as standard on the Grand Cherokee SRT. With minimum overhangs in front and rear, the vehicle has a ground
clearance of 210mm and a water fording depth of 508mm. Not to miss are the body coloured power folding mirrors, the roof rails and the dual pane panoramic sunroof.
INTERIORS Step inside the cabin and you experience the trappings of a rich world. The front two seats of the driver and co-driver come with an eight-way power adjustment. The leath er seats with perforation are actually ventilated seats. The second row is 60/40 folding. The SRT has seating for five adults and cargo space of 1025 litres that can be increased to 1945 litres when

the rear seats are folded. The leather spread continues to the upper door trim, instrument panel and centre armrest. The SUV comes with dual zone automatic temperature control with separate vents for the rear passenger. The rear view mirror is auto dimming with a microphone. There is a large 8.4 inches touchscreen navigation radio with voice command. For the rear passengers there is entertainment galore with two 9 inches screen mounted on the front seat backs. You can play your DVDs and Blue ray discs from a small compartment tucked under the front arm rest. There are separate ports for plugging in video games or other devices. For music aficionados, the SRT comes with Harman Kardon Music System with 19 speakers. Practical features like a park view rear back up camera and sensors that assist you for front and rear parking, make things very convenient for the driver. The steering is leather wrapped with audio, speed controls and come with paddle shifters and voice
recognition. The steering can be tilted and telescopically adjusted by the touch of a lever button. As part of the electronic offerings, the SRT also comes with a push button ignition system which starts the engine once the brake pedal is depressed. The remote key fob can simply be tucked away safely. As for the tail gate, it can either be opened with the touch of a roof mounted button or pressing the remote key fob. The tail gate can also be opened from the outside by gently pressing a button at the rear. Shutting it can be done so by pressing a button at the rear inner wall of the vehicle or with the help of the key fob. The SRT also has a rain sensing wiper system.
PERFORMANCE The Grand Cherokee SRT comes with the biggest engine among the lot with a 6.4 litre, Hemi V8, petrol, which is capable of putting out 468.3hp at 6250rpm and 624Nm of torque at 4100rpm. The SRT is the fastest in Jeep’s line-up for India and has a 0-100kmph time of just 5 seconds. Surprised? Well,
40 | MOTOWN INDIA | OCTOBER 2016
it’s this petrol engine that has made all the difference to the SRT and contributed to its speed and acceleration. The engine in the SRT comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with E-shift and with paddle shifters. The Hemi word is derived from the Chrysler’s hemispherical cylinder head (“hemi-head”) which gives an efficient combustion chamber with an excellent surfaceto-volume ratio, with minimal heat loss to the head, and allows for two large valves. The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT has an on demand 4WD system with a 5 driving modes that offers Track, Sport, Auto, Snow and Tow modes. The vehicle comes with electronic limited slip differential. The tow mode is more appropriate for people in advanced countries who take along their trailers on a long road trip. Auto is the best mode suited for driving in India unless one takes it to snowy areas or the race track. The SRT has performance disc brakes with red 6-piston front / 4-piston rear Brembo
calipers. These are very effective at high speeds as it’s not easy to bring a heavy vehicle to a grinding halt so easily. With features like all speed traction control, Brake Assist, Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM) and Electronic brake force distribution (EBD), its obvious that the SRT performs rather well on the road as well as off-road. Yes, today there are several SUVs in the country that offer a plethora of technological features and high levels of comfort for the occupants, but with the SRT it’s a different feel altogether. Both comfort and performance are the best in its class. Moreover, it comes with a legacy that not many manufacturers can boast of! MI

FIRST DRIVE 2016 HYUNDAI ELANTRA
STYLED TO PERFORM Report: JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER & Photography: AFSAR BAIG
I
got an opportunity to put the new Hyundai Elantra through its paces on the dusty roads of Chennai. This new sedan had a certain charm about it. The design, smooth flowing lines, the aggressive stance and elegant interiors all created an aura of
mystery and magic around me. Well, if you were not blown away previously by Hyundai’s Fluidic design concept then I am sure the new design on the Hyundai Elantra will do the Job. This executive sedan has looks which can rival some German and Swedish make of cars. It sports HID projector headlamps
upfront with LED DRLs, a large hexagonal chrome front grille, LED rear combination tail lamps, projector fog lamps, chrome door handles with pocket lights, 10-spoke 16 inch gun metal alloys and some really crisp lines running seamlessly from front to back. On the inside, the story is not much different. The cabin is very
functional and every little corner seems to have been intricately thought out and designed. The Elantra features leather seats, dual zone climate control with ventilated front seats, aluminum scuff plates, smart key with push button start/ stop function, aluminum pedals, front and rear seat armrests and a very handy

infotainment setup which is USB, AUX and bluetooth enabled. The overall fit and finish inside the cabin is quite good and feels very up market and contemporary. The subtle accents of chrome and glossy finish on the dash add to the touch and feel, while the overall quality of materials is quite commendable. At the heart of the Hyundai Elantra is the same 1.6 litre diesel which also powers the Verna. However, this engine has been re-tuned by Hyundai. The Elantra is also available with a new 2.0 litre Petrol VTVT engine. We got our hands on the 1582cc, CRDi, Diesel which puts out approximately 126hp at 4000rpm and 260Nm of torque from 1900 to 2750rpm. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission
www.motownindia.com
with options for a 6-speed manual transmission also on offer. Peak power in the Elantra 1.6L, CRDi comes in at approximately 4000rpm. However, the vehicle gains momentum quick and can achieve good speeds. We got our hands on the Elantra with the 6-speed automatic transmission. At first I was not too impressed but once we got on to open stretches of road and I changed the settings to sport mode everything seemed to brighten up. The 6-speed auto box is quite refined and the gear shifts feel seamless. The transmission comes with three different driving modes -- Auto, Eco and Sport. While I was on the highway I engaged Sport mode and was enjoying the drive a lot. The engine immediately becomes more responsive and one
can feel the surge of power. As soon as I hit a little traffic, I switched to Eco mode which made the response rather dull but then again I did not need too much power and was sure to save some fuel as well. Speaking of fuel, the 1.6 litre, CRDi automatic returns almost 18kms to the litre. This is more than decent for an automatic sedan of its size. Hyundai has also tweaked the driving dynamics of the new Elantra which has a much better steering setup. The steering is now much more responsive and is accurate to driver inputs
however it still remains rather wooden and lacks in feedback. The suspension setup on the new Elantra is a McPherson Strut in the front and a Coupled Torsion Beam in the rear. The rear also comes with gas filled shock absorbers with HRS (Hydraulic Recoil Stopper) technology. HRS makes the ride a little stiffer and gives a sporty feel to the suspension. The chassis also feels stiffer than before and caters

for a very planted and well balanced ride even at higher speeds. The new Elantra comes with disc brakes in the front and rear, the braking is progressive and lends the driver a lot of control and confidence. The cabin of the Elantra feels quite modern and contemporary. It has a lot of functionality built into it and that makes all the difference. The overall design of the car is very likable and checks all the right boxes in my book. The engine also does perform exceptionally well however we would have loved a little more performance out of it. Overall levels of comfort are good with low NVH levels catering for a very fun and carefree ride. This executive sedan is definitely something which the segment has been lacking in many ways. It also has cruise control, 6 airbags including driver, co-driver, side and curtain airbags, ABS, EBD, Electronic Stability Control, Vehicle Stability Management, Hill-Start Assist Control and an AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steel) construction. The new Elantra comes full loaded with features, safety and performance and all of this at a reasonable price point. MI

Toyota showcased their new Innova Crysta back in February this year at the Auto Expo and its mammoth proportions bedazzled us. It’s bigger than before and has a bold new design. But does the Crysta have what it takes to keep the Innova charm intact? We find out... To put things into perspective
the Innova Crysta is 150mm longer, 65mm broader and 38mm taller than the older version of the Innova. That’s not all. The Innova Crysta also gets bigger engines. It is now being offered with a 2.8 litre diesel engine and a 2.7 litre petrol motor. The diesel, however, seems much better suited for the Innova Crysta while the

petrol engine makes the vehicle feel quite refined and smooth. In terms of numbers, the 2755cc, 4 cylinder, 16V, GD, diesel engine puts out 171.5bhp at 3400rpm while the 2694cc, 4 cylinder, 16, VVT-i, petrol motor can muster a total of 163.7bhp at 5200rpm. The diesel engine also has a much better torque figure when compared with the petrol motor. It churns out 360Nm which is at your disposal from 1200-3400rpm. The petrol motor pushes out 245Nm at 4000rpm which sits quite high in the rev band. As mentioned earlier, the diesel mill is better suited for the Innova. The reason being, it has more torque which is available very low in the rpm band at just 1200rpm and goes up all the way to 3400rpm, the same rpm level at which the engine also puts out its peak power of 171.5 horses. The 2.8 litre diesel also attains a higher power figure much quicker in the rpm band than the petrol engine. But then the 2.7 litre petrol engine is much more refined, smooth and free of irritating jerks. Both the vehicles that we tested had their engines mated to 6-speed automatic transmissions. The Innova Crysta is also available with a 5-speed manual transmission. The automatic sequential transmission feels a lot more at home when mated with the petrol motor.
It is rather smooth and shifts are quite seamless. That is not the case when it is mated to the diesel mill wherein up-shifts are a bit more obvious. The Innova Crysta also has options of switching to a Power Mode or an Eco Mode. While the former caters to a very sporty drive and gives the driver full advantage of the engine’s potential, the latter is useful in city traffic where fuel efficiency takes a big hit. Speaking of efficiency, the Innova Crysta’s 2.7 litre petrol, automatic returns close to 15kmpl while the diesel is only slightly better than that. Toyota’s Innova was also quite popular because of the comfort it offered while travelling, be it
48 | MOTOWN INDIA | OCTOBER 2016
long journeys or through city traffic. This new Innova Crysta is no different. It rides on a double wishbone suspension with a torsion beam up front and a 4 link in the rear. The MPV glides over bad or broken roads with ease, although one needs to be careful over big potholes as occupants can get tossed about a wee bit. Toyota has also managed to engineer perfection into the braking setup on the new Innova Crysta. The front disc and rear drum brake combination is quite accurate and progressive, lending the driver ample confidence even at great speeds. But that is not all, the Innova Crysta feels a lot more premium than before. The cabin oozes luxury and the

senses are treated to a rich mix of leather, wood and exquisite materials. In terms of features also one has a very optimum blend of options on offer ranging from automatic climate control, automatic headlamps, power adjustable driver seats, ambient lighting, a touch screen infotainment setup with bluetooth, AUX and USB capability to steering mounted controls, push button start/ stop, leather upholstery, cooling box, welcome lamps, projector headlamps with DRLs and electrically adjustable/ retractable ORVMs. The Innova Crysta also offers one touch tumble second row seats, easy slide front passenger seat, foldable seatback tables with cup holders for the second row and plenty of smartly placed cubby holes and storage spaces. In terms of safety the MPV has ABS with EBD on offer along
with 7 airbags, vehicle stability management, hill start assist control and a pitch and bounce control. The Innova Crysta has also offers a very boxy design with smooth flowing lines which give it an SUV like appeal yet offering the best of comfort an MPV can. The seats are also quite comfy with plenty of support and bolstering. While testing out this MPV on Indian roads I could not help but notice the amount of admirers the Innova Crysta had. On more than one occasion I saw people sitting in their city smart compact cars gaping in awe at the mammoth size of the MPV. The Innova Crysta is not just bigger and bolder in size but is also bigger and bolder in terms of luxury. It offers the right mix of quality, performance, luxury and features, all at a price point that is quite justified for the punch it packs. MI

HIMALAYAN HIGHS SEASON 2
11 gritty women conquer Khardungl La heights on a 110cc machine It’s always an adventure to travel to the highest motorable road in Khardung La in SUVs and motorcycles that produce insane levels of power and torque. And when a team of young women said that they would attempt this feat on a lightweight scooty powered by a 109.7 cc air-cooled engine that produces barely around 7.88 bhp and 8.7 Nm of peak
torque, it sounded almost hilarious. But what happened next was not just commendable and inspiring, but it also got the 11 women riders a place in India Book of Records for being the first group of women riders to ride to the world’s highest motorable road Khardung La at 18,340 feet on an 110cc scooter. The Himalayan Highs Season II could not have ended on a more successful note for the ladies. These riders who hailed from across the country, were led by the gritty Anam Hashim, the solo rider of Himalayan

The 10 riders who accompanied Anam on this epic ride were Megha Chakraborty (Bilaspur), Kainoor Mistry (Mumbai), Roshni Somkuwar (Nagpur), Garima Kapoor (Lucknow), Ebronah Dorothy (Chennai), Pallavi Fauzdar (Delhi), Antara Pal (Bengaluru), Trupti Sarmalkar (Mumbai), Surbhi Tiwari (Bengaluru) and Shruthi Naidu (Bengaluru). Anam Hashim while saying a few good words about her TVS
scooty admitted that the ride to the top wasn’t an easy one and their mental and physical fitness was put to the test with the unpredictable weather and harsh environment. Echoing similar sentiments, Roshni Somkuwar said, “We scaled the heights together and opened our mind to new experiences and challenges. It will be one of the true highs of my life and I will cherish this ride and my TVS Scooty Zest 110 forever. ” Others in the group too confessed to their early fears on the 110cc machine, but as they progressed, they realised that

The Himalayan Highs Season 2 had kicked off in the summer of 2016 and had witnessed a huge response across the country with about 50,000 enquiries from women riders and enthusiasts across all 29 states and select union territories. The applicants were evaluated and shortlisted based on psychographics, physical fitness, mental strength and then they were trained as they came with different riding prowess. D N A L g n i c n e i Exper y a w l a r u t a n the A
ll modern vehicles today come with a plethora of technical features that enhance driving experience considerably. But not all customers get to understand, or use these features confidently. That is one of the reasons why many of these top-end car manufacturers get into an “Experience drive to explain to their customers the finer points of the features their cars offer. Land Rover (part of JLR and owned by Tata Motors) is one such company in India that has
been telling its customers about the extreme capabilities of the SUVs they make. The year 2016 has specially been an eventful year for the company as it has been conducting these experience drives across several Indian cities beginning Kochi (Kerala) in April and slowly moving up to places like Hyderabad, Bangalore, Aamby Valley (Mumbai), Delhi, Nagpur and Ahmedabad. It would soon move on to Kolkata and Chandigarh. At each of these experience drives, well trained drivers

certified by Land Rover, accompany customers and explain to them the nuances of driving in different modes and through different difficult natural terrains, gently directing them to use the right techniques of braking, accelerating and steering to overcome their hurdles. When it comes to driving on normal roads and highways and experiencing the luxury features of a car, one really does not need to have a tutor. These experiences come naturally to the occupants of a car. But what many are
www.motownindia.com
FEATURES & TRAVEL not able to comprehend is the technical capabilities of a vehicle through some tough terrains. Even though a Land Rover SUV is capable of overcoming all kinds of difficult obstacles---a wide ditch or a water logged pit, or a steep incline, or sandy terrain or a rutted patch---more often it is the driver who hesitates or gets it wrong. That’s where these experience drives make very good common sense. Land Rover vehicles that have been doing the rounds in these experience drives include the Range Rover Evoque and the New Discovery Sport. The Evoque comes in four variants and is powered by a diesel 2179cc, while the
New Discovery Sport comes in fives variants with both diesel (2179cc) and petrol 1999cc option. Apart from the loads of comfort features both the models offer, both have their engines mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission and have features like hill descent control, electronic power assisted steering, anti-lock braking system, traction control, roll stability control and dynamic stability control, among others. These Land Rover vehicles also come
with a feature that goes by the name of Terrain Response. This has long been a differentiator for Land Rover vehicles. The patented system allows drivers to select one of several modes that optimise performance on a variety of different surfaces. Latest vehicle from the Land Rover stable now come with Terrain Response 2 Auto which is far smarter than its predecessor.
These “Experience” drives saw drivers use modes like Rock Crawl, General Driving, Grass, Grave & Snow, Mud & Ruts and Sand. All one needed was to accelerate, brake and handle the steering in the most sensible manner. The vehicle did the rest. Driving these vehicles on the outskirts of Delhi in one of the most inhospitable terrains was like a walk in the park.

(HMCL), has showed a glimpse of their off-roading prowess at the Hero Centre of Innovation and Technology (CIT), Jaipur. Marking their first visit to the country, since the formation of the division in May 2016, the entire team exuded confidence ahead of the grueling Oilibya Rally in Morocco, the final stepping-stone before Dakar 2017. The team riders including CS Santosh, India’s most accomplished off-road rider and Joaquim Rodrigues, highly-experienced and versatile rider from Portugal, showcased the man and machine capabilities of the Team, on a specially designed off-road track. Designed under the supervision of French and German engineers, the track provided exciting obstacles for the riders on their upgraded Speedbrain 450 rally bikes. The Hero MotoSports Team Rally had an impressive run at the Afriquia Merzouga Rally earlier this year, with Rodrigues having a top 10 finish (9th spot) while while Santosh closing the rally at 16th spot in the overall standings. In May 2016, Hero MotoCorp forayed into the world of motorcycle rally racing by entering into a strategic partnership with Speedbrain GmbH, the German off-road racing specialist to form Hero MotoCorp Team Rally. His Mercedes team mate Lewis Hamilton finiahsed third and with this win Rosberg has now managed to come on top of the drivers’ table with an eight points lead over Hamilton Force India’s Serio Perez managed to come in the first ten with an eight position. Unfortunately his team mate Nico Hulkenberg was eliminated before the first corner in the initial part of the race. Carlos Sainz of Toro Rosso in a sudden move tagged the rear of Hulkenberg’s Force India, pitching it into the pit wall. At the end of the race, it was sad to see Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari missing the podium by a very narrow margin. His team mate finished a fifth position. Young driver Max Verstappen was sixth for Red Bull, ahead of McLaren’s Fernando Alonso, with Force India’s Sergio Perez, Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat and Renault’s Kevin Magnussen completing the top ten. After the incident in the initial stages of the race, the safety car was immediately deployed, as it became clear that Williams’ Valtteri Bottas was also carrying a left-rear puncture and Jenson Button’s McLaren had damage to its right-front wing. Racing resumed on Lap 3. Lap 37 saw Bottas retiring his car as it faced mechanical issues, primarily due to a seatbelt problem. In lap 45, McLaren’s Jenson Button also retired. Championship leader Marc Marques wins AragonGP Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) won an exciting race at MotorLand Aragon in the Spanish MotoGP to extend his championship lead. Movistar Yamaha MotoGP racers Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi fought hard to come in 2nd and 3rd for a podium finish. His first victory since July’s German Grand Prix extended his lead in the Riders World Championship to 52 points, at the same time increasing Honda’s advantage in the Constructors World Championship to 13 points. There are now four races left of the 18-event championship. It was a great weekend for Honda, with Marquez topping three out of the four free practice sessions, taking pole position in qualifying, leading Sunday’s morning’s warm-up session and then winning the race. The only outing he didn’t dominate was Friday afternoon’s FP2 session, when Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC213V) set the pace. Pedrosa, winner at Misano two weeks ago, finished the final race in sixth place while struggling with front-tire issues. The former 125cc and 250cc World Champion crossed the line less than four seconds behind Czech GP winner Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda RC213V).
The combined result of Marquez and Pedrosa also keeps the Repsol Honda team ahead in the Teams World Championship Marquez came out best of the frantic first few laps of the MotoGP race, but then lost the front on lap three, saving a crash with his cat-like reactions. That scare dropped the 23-year-old Spaniard to fifth place, but he stayed cool, calm and collected and step by step made his way back towards the front, making a series of astonishing passes in the middle of the turn 14/15 chicane. He finally took the lead from Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) at that same point at half-distance. From there he was able to make the break and establish an unbeatable lead, getting the maximum from his tyre choice: a hard/asymmetric front and hard rear. This was the youngster’s 28th MotoGP win and, remarkably, his first success on Spanish asphalt since his victory in the 2014 Valencia Grand Prix. The MotoGP circus reconvenes at Motegi for the Japanese Grand Prix on October 16th, with the Australian and Malaysian races following on consecutive Sundays. The season concludes at Valencia, Spain, On November 13th.

President & Managing Director, FCA India Automobiles Pvt. Ltd. Report : P. THARYAN The Fiat brand has taken a beating in India in the last several years. You think with the launch of the Jeep brand by FCA India Automobiles Pvt Ltd, your brand perception will change for the better? Yes, I really do. We have always been known as Fiat in India. We have got so much history and heritage, both good and not so good over the years. The company has evolved dramatically on the global stage. We have become Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. We haven’t really made that move in India as we should have. And then it’s got a responsibility for a number of brands. What our task is now and what we are really engaged is in migrating the company to FCA and then below that it will have a number of brands. Who knows where that will lead us in the future? The project now is Jeep. So the key thing we need to do now is the entire infrastructure, everything we do is wholly and totally appropriate with the Jeep clientele. The other commitment is that we are now going to be
manufacturing in India. Our commitment is long-term. This is a long-term strategy and a holistic strategy that gives us a real base in India perhaps we have not managed to exploit to date. And that is going to put a lot of solidity to FCA and I do believe that is going to have a positive spin on where we are and where we want to go with the Fiat brand. The Fiat brand is an entity in its own right. FCA is what we are as a corporation and as a company and we will make sure that we will do justice to this 75 years old iconic brand and the timing for us could not be better. We need to live up to the expectation of our senior management and make sure that India becomes proud of FCA and proud of the Jeep brand being present. Jeep products are at the top end of your range in terms of pricing, and India being a market for affordable mass market products where your company is also present currently, how will you deal with the market? Our plan is to launch the Jeep
in CBU and yes, they are at the top end of the market products that will appeal to the top echelons of Indian society and the brand values of freedom and capability will really appeal. But that is not where we will stay. That’s what sets the benchmark. That’s what sets the tonality of what we are. It’s actually the products that we are going to bring; the ones we are going to manufacture that really would allow the Jeep brand to become attainable within the Indian market. That’s the exciting thing. Is it fair to assume that in the next six months to one year we can look forward to some very exciting products from FCA? You certainly can. An all-new SUV will be manufactured in Ranjangaon (Maharashtra). We are very excited about the Indian market. We are part of a global brand and this is a real responsibility. But more to the point, the global brand has got an interest in what we are doing and the global brand is what is investing in taking us forward. Around US$ 280 million has been
invested in Ranjangaon to make it Jeep ready. It is start of a new era for us. What are you going to do to improve the morale of your dealers in India who may have had to face some tough situations in the past? This is something that is very close to my heart. Since I have been here, which is around 18 months, I have tried to create a business model for them that actually gives them their kind of income and the kind of benefits that they deserve. We have got some good guys and I think what we are trying to do is take as many of those partners we can on this journey. We are working on a plan to migrate a number of those operators that can come with us and can give us a representation that we want. We are working to make sure that we can evolve and can en masse meet the demands of this new clientele for us. So that means you will be able to regain some of your past glory? That’s my goal, that’s why I am here. That is what I am committed to.
The Fiat brand is an entity in its own right. FCA is what we are as a corporation and as a company and we will make sure that we will do justice to this 75 years old iconic brand and the timing for us could not be better. www.motownindia.com

COVER REPORT
T
here has been a lot of speculation about car manufacturer Kia Motors of South Korea making an entry into India. According to highly placed sources, Kia is definitely on its way into India and is actively considering setting up operations in the country. But its strategy to enter India, whether it would be a standalone business, or a shared business with Hyundai Motor India, its product portfolio, etc, all these are a long way from being finalised. “We at Kia Motors are continually evaluating potential locations for overseas manufacturing facilities, including India, to secure additional engines for future growth. However, as of now no concrete plans have been finalized,” said Michael Choo, General Manager, Overseas PR Team, Kia Motors Corporation in a communication to Motown India on being asked about Kia plans for India. For those who are not aware, Hyundai Motor Company currently owns a 33.88pc stake in Kia Motors. Kia Motors is an owner in 19 different Hyundai companies. Hyundai Motor Company is also a subsidiary of the Hyundai-Kia
www.motownindia.com
Automotive Group. Hyundai Motor India is a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company. Senior analysts at Motown India are of the opinion that Hyundai Motor India will gain significantly if Kia Motors sets base in the country. First and foremost, Hyundai Motor India will be able to collectively have a much larger share in the Indian car market, especially now that the gap in sales between Hyundai and the largest car maker Maruti Suzuki is unlikely to be bridged with its current portfolio of products. It is to be seen whether Kia and Hyundai enter into a similar operation like the way the Renault Nissan Alliance has done in India wherein the two car makers Renault and Nissan share one common manufacturing plant in Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu.
HYUNDAI’S ONE & ONLY OBSESSION Come to think of it, Hyundai Motor India has one and only one obsession: To beat Maruti Suzuki in domestic sales. No matter what it has been trying, Maruti seems to maintain its lead in terms of
domestic sales in the country. For the period April to August 2016, Hyundai Motor India recorded domestic sales of 207910 units, registering a 9.80pc increase, according to data provided by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). During this same period Maruti Suzuki sold 568010, or much more than double what Hyundai sold in India. Though Hyundai scores over Maruti in exports--- 70,893 units as compared to 48908 units for the period under consideration--- this figure is not very significant.. Even though Hyundai came into India with a bang, with Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan endorsing the Hyundai Santro, it could never really catch up with Maruti Suzuki when it came to the mass market. The South Korean company has been beaten in almost every department when it came to sales numbers of Maruti Suzuki. Hyundai Motor India, like many other auto majors in the world conducts clinics for new cars to be launched in India and has been toying with the idea of bringing in the new Santro as well as its highly priced luxury

COVER REPORT models under the Genesis brand. These luxury cars are doing extremely well in some of the developed markets like the US. Though customer focussed studies etc have been conducted in the country, Hyundai has still to decide whether to bring in the luxury brand in India where names like Mercedes, BMW and Audi are not only popular among the well heeled, but have gained a lot of acceptance. Even while Hyundai is contemplating bringing in new brands and models into India, Maruti Suzuki has been going all out to increase its market share despite having limited number of revolutionary models. The company even set up exclusive Nexa outlets for sale of premium vehicles from its portfolio. These Nexa outlets have become a great success and Nexa dealerships are showing signs of great progress. WHAT HAS KIA TO OFFER? Kia may be an unknown brand among the masses in India today. But then so were the others who came and established themselves
Kia’s new front-wheel drive 8AT in India. With rising incomes of Indians and the growing influence of the digital space, Kia should not find it difficult to establish itself in India and strengthen the hands of Hyundai. The company makes not only small cars but premium SUVs and sedans too. From models like the Picanto, Rio, Venga, Soul and cee’d, among others which are powered by engine capacities of 1 litre and above, to big sized models like Sportage and Optima, Kia Motors has a lot to offer to the Indian market. Incidentally, Kia cars are available in the markets of Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka. Kia is also doing great when it comes to latest technology. In September 2016 Kia introduced its first front-wheel drive eightspeed automatic transmission. The new FWD 8AT occupies the same space as a conventional six-speed automatic transmission, and weighs 3.5 kg less. Kia’s engineers already have experience of developing eight-speed transmissions for rear-wheel drive vehicles, mounting the transmission longitudinally and
sending power to the rear axle. However, incorporating the same number of gears into a frontwheel drive car is incredibly challenging, due to packaging constraints and the need to mount the transmission transversely, competing with the engine, suspension and auxiliary components for space under the bonnet. Kia’s new front-wheel drive 8AT is making its global debut in the
2017 Kia Cadenza – on sale across selected global markets in 2016 – and is featured as standard on Cadenza models powered by the 3.3-liter V6 GDI engine. Going forward, Kia’s new eightspeed automatic transmission will be applied to a number of mid-sized and larger front-

COVER REPORT wheel drive models, and will serve as a stepping stone to the development of future advanced Kia transmissions. Kia is also determined to create a distinctive appearance for its vehicles. The Corporation has top German car designer Peter Schreyer as President and Chief Design Officer of Kia Motors. He is now marking ten years of leading new car design for Kia, a period during which the Korean brand’s global sales have risen from around 1.1 million cars in 2005, to 3.05 million in 2015. As Kia has transformed its model range, the proliferation of Korean culture around the world – K-Pop, ‘Gangnam Style’, modern architecture in Kia’s own Korean domestic market, and the appreciation of Korean art, to name a few – has helped inspire Schreyer and his design teams. Peter Schreyer’s design philosophy is borne out of this Korean inspiration: ‘the simplicity of the straight line’, which characterizes every one of the designs he has overseen. The growth of a truly global network of designers has led to different interpretations of this approach, with design centres now established in California in the USA, Frankfurt in Germany, and at the company’s Namyang R&D centre in Korea.
Schreyer says: “What really excites me is how fast this company is evolving. The brand as you knew it 10 or even five years ago is gone. You can see it in even the smallest detail. You can feel it in the sophisticated textures and materials. And you experience it in ways that are inter-related and connected. As we move forward, it’s important that change is an improvement and not just for the sake of looking different.” At the 2016 Paris Motor Show in end September, Kia revealed an all-new Rio. The all-new, fourthgeneration Kia Rio made its world premiere in Paris. The design of the new Rio was led by Kia’s design centres in Germany and California, in close collaboration with the company’s global design headquarters in Namyang, Korea. The appearance of the new Rio is defined by straight lines and smooth surfacing, giving the car a distinctive, confident new look. At the front, the Rio wears the latest evolution of Kia’s ‘tiger-nose’ grille, now thinner in height and wider across the front of the car. The new Rio has grown by 5 mm in width (to 1,725 mm). The Kia Rio is the Korean manufacturer’s global best-selling model,
with more than 473,000 sold around the world in 2015. The next generation will enter production towards the end of 2016 for Europe. Cumulatively through the first eight months of 2016, Kia’s global sales totalled 1,938,113 units for a year-on-year increase of 3.0%. Western Europe (293,371 units sold), Korea (358,160 units sold), North America (492,007 units sold) and China (376,530 units sold) have seen a 14.7%, 7.7% 3.8% and 1.2% rise in sales, respectively. Kia’s bestselling model in overseas markets during August 2016 was the Sportage compact Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) with 37,400 units sold. The B-segment Rio (known as ‘K2’ in China) was the second best seller with 33,762 units sold, while the C-segment Cerato (Known as ‘Forte’ or ‘K3’ in some markets), Optima midsized sedan and Soul urban crossover followed with 30,399, 19,804 and 16,635 units sold, respectively. Recently Kia opened a new car making facility in Mexico, its sixth overseas production facility
at an investment of US$3 billion. The annual production capacity of this plant will reach 400,000 units, while Kia’s global production capacity would be reaching 3.56 million units. Kia expects the plant to be operating at full capacity of 400,000 units utilising three shifts by the end of 2018. Beginning of 2017, the Mexico plant will produce the all-new fourth generation B-segment Rio, which had its world premiere on 29 September in Paris at the 2016 Mondial de l’Automobile. While it has been officially revealed that Kia is considering India as a potential market, it is now to be seen how fast their plans for entering India become a reality. As for Shahrukh Khan, the ageing Bollywood star, they can afford to give him a pass this time around! MI

POISED TO BECOME “GAME CHANGER” Rajiv Poddar says that today his company is now poised to become a “Game Changer”. According to him, the history of any company reflects its identity. It was in 1954, when his grandfather and the company’s Founder Chairman late Mahabirprasad Poddar, took up a new challenge in setting up the production of cycle tyres in addition to the already well-established textile business. In the late eighties, Poddar informs, his group experienced its first evolution when it started the production of two-and three-wheeler tyres.
During 1994, an in-depth study of the international market was carried out. It showed a lack of a midsegment brand in the Off-highway tyre industry, which was able to compete with premium brands, on both quality and customer care. A strategic decision was taken to enter into this segment. In the same year, BKT went international with intense activities of market penetration, first in Europe (starting from the UK), then in US. In 2004 BKT entered the segment of radial agriculture tyres, a segment that even today represents the company’s main product segment. A further breakthrough for BKT came with the launch of Agrimax Force tyres for high-powered tractors in 2007. “Today, we are proud of having a very extensive range of Radial Agricultural tyres consisting of over 230 sizes, and being also the leading manufacturer of Agri

Radial tyres across the globe,” says Poddar. After establishing footprints in the bias OTR tyre industry in the year 2008, the company marked its entry into the specialised segment of OTR All-Steel radial tires: an essential strategic move to strengthen BKT’s leadership in the Off-Highway tyre market. Huge investments were made to set up a new and modern production facility in Chopanki, in north India. “Today in this segment at BKT we have the production capability for the sizes ranging from 17.5” to 49” and in early 2017 will go up to 51”, “ he adds. BKT plants are currently established in Aurangabad, Bhiwadi, Chopanki and Dombivali, besides the new one in Bhuj.
BKT is also the official and exclusive tyre manufacturer of Monster Jam and its fleet of monster trucks. Monster Jam is a top sporting event in America with monster truck racing and freestyle competitions. Monster trucks are large vehicles suitably modified and equipped with special tyres reaching a diameter of about 1.6 meters. Monster Jam produces more than 350 shows with over 4 million spectators a year. BKT plays a central role at all Monster Jam events in over 100 cities in North America as well as on the international tours. BKT is the official tyre supplier for all Monster Jam trucks taking part in

the shows. BKT has designed and developed the special BKT Monster Jam Tire, a purpose-built tyre equipping all monster trucks. Explaining the company’s gradual growth in the tyre industry, Poddar says, “From an initial production of 10 MT per day, we are currently producing 600 MT per day, which will eventually reach 800 MT per day by 2017. From 200 SKUs, we currently offer a complete product portfolio consisting of over 2,400 SKUs. From 100 moulds a year,
we are currently making over 300 moulds to ensure final product quality and design, along with a very short time to market. Investments in infrastructure have also gone beyond our national borders, leading to the opening of our four overseas offices: 1 in Europe, 2 in US and 1 in Canada to support the local markets. Today, BKT products are sold in over 130 countries across
A section of the highly automated BKT Tyre Plant in Bhuj, Gujarat the world through our network of channel partners,” he explains. Poddar has only one dream and vision for his company: to achieve the leadership in the Off-Highway tyre market worldwide. BKT plants in Aurangabad, Chopanki and Bhiwadi are already working at full capacity. Now with the Bhuj
plant being operational, the picture is entirely different for the company. Rajiv Poddar describes that scenario in his words, “Bhuj has changed the game - here and today”. MI

INTERVIEW
SANJAY GUPTA
Sr. Director, NXP Semiconductors When you talk of semiconductors what exactly does it mean in terms of products and components that go into a vehicle? Since semiconductors and the automotive electronics industry have a massive synergy, how has the industry evolved over the last decade or so? Over the last decade, we have seen rapid growth in the automotive electronics industry. With the digital revolution happening in the country the consumer demand for connected and smart products are on a rise. Customers are looking forward to make their driving smart and easy. The crux lies in the evolution of the semiconductor space as it is playing an instrumental role in making vehicles advanced and more user friendly. The space covers a very wide area from vehicle networking, automotive lighting, car infotainment to, any electronic circuit present in a car, involves different semiconductors working together. Currently a modern connected car contains up to 100 control units (ECUs), managing everything from infotainment systems to missioncritical systems. Every car is laced with the microcontrollers, processors and sensors to help driver drive smart and secure. Concepts like IoTs and Smart Cities have inflated the demand for automotive electronics, as consumers want their cars to be smart, secure and connected. In India too, we are seeing rapid transformation and growth in automotive electronics segment. Continental brings the Head-Up Display to commercial vehicles It has already conquered the mid-range cars, but it’s still new in the world of trucks – the head-up display (HUD). Continental is one of the world’s first companies to develop a HUD for commercial vehicles and has installed the technology in its own InnovationTruck. Supplementing conventional instrument clusters, the display provides the driver with greater safety and comfort by projecting a color image of important driving information into his field of vision. Continental offers manufacturers the display as a Windshield or a Combiner HUD. Customers can also choose to have the display shown in the upper or lower field of view (lookup or look-down concept). The display options and the colour schemes of the HUD are very varied and can be freely defined by the vehicle manufacturer. The display gets its data via the CAN bus and depending on the available sources, the display choices range from speed, navigation instructions and traffic sign
warnings such as overtaking restrictions and speed limits, to distance warnings, gas tank levels and the driving time remaining until the next break. The driver gets all the important information exactly where he needs it – in his field of view. This increases safety, because he doesn’t have to take his eyes off the road for a second or two, as is the case with a conventional instrument cluster – and his eyes don’t have to focus on a shorter viewing distance before the flow of information starts and then adjust again to the longer-distance view. This refocusing process takes time and tires the eyes after a while. Four versions – available as a Windshield or Combiner HUD, with the display either shown at the top or bottom of the field of view The Continental HUD is available as a Windscreen HUD, where the windshield serves as a mirror for the displayed information. This version is ideal for commercial vehicles with flatter windshields which are common in the USA. In the case of the
Combiner HUD, a transparent pane (the combiner) handles the image reflection in front of the windshield. This version is particularly suitable for confined spaces with more steeply curved windshields, which are more common in Europe. The vehicle manufacturer can also choose whether the display should be shown in the upper or lower field
of view (look-up and look-down approach). Continental offers the Windshield HUD in the look-down version as standard. The use of a head-up display also gives OEMs new opportunities in vehicle design. The instrument panel can be made smaller, for example, because all of its information content can be transferred to the HUD.

Megatranz fleet gets extra heavy-duty trucks featuring Allison transmissions A market leader in transporting large and extra heavy-duty parts and equipment, Megatranz Transportes, a Brazil based company, has added two Allison transmission-equipped Kenworth C500 trucks to its fleet. Allison Transmission is the world’s largest manufacturer of fully automatic transmissions for medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles and is a leader in hybrid-propulsion systems for city buses. Featuring the Allison 6000 Series transmission, the trucks were imported from the U.S. when no domestic options were available that met all of the specific requirements to transport extra heavy cargo. “We had capacity to transport cargo up to 1,000 tons,” said Renato Zuppardo, director of operations for Megatranz. “However, we didn’t have the right truck to pull it safely. One of our main requirements was an automatic transmission because of the torque converter and its ability to multiply the engine torque, a vital factor for our type of application.” Choosing Allison Automatics was also important as its noclutch system results in less wear.
Another important requirement was a high multiplication rear axle for more traction ability and low speed. To meet that challenge, a military tank rear axle had to be adopted, with a 70 cm diameter differential, which took six months to be manufactured. The Allison transmission was connected to a transfer case, enabling the truck to develop maximum speed of 40 km/h and 20 km/h cruise speed with extreme traction power. The Kenworth C500 has 6x4 traction and 600 hp. In the U.S., it is approved for 500 tons on a track with 3 percent incline. In Brazil, with approval made on flat land (zero incline), it could pull up to 1,000 tons. The truck’s weight alone reaches 72 tons with a counterbalance box ballast required to give the wheels more friction on the ground and prevent the truck from losing traction while in transit. “An Allison transmission was essential,” said Zuppardo. “It is important for our type of transportation, as it provides continuous acceleration without losing power during shifting like a manual transmission. It will also be of great help to maneuver irregular terrain, as will be the case of its
94 | MOTOWN INDIA | OCTOBER 2016
debut, when it will carry over 300 tons on dirt roads.” The first job for the extra heavy-duty truck will be transporting a rotor and a transformer to the São Manoel hydroelectric power plant, located on the border of the states of Mato Grosso and Pará. On that route, up to three heavy trucks connected through a push-pull system will pull the 192-tire trailer. From there to the worksite, the three trucks will be
replaced by the Kenworth tractor, which will pull the trailer to cover the remaining 100 kilometers (60 miles) of dirt road to the power plant. Under ideal conditions, it should take the truck two days to travel the road with incline varying from 15 to 17 percent.

Land Rover has debuted an innovative optional new seven passenger seating feature of the all new full-size Land Rover Discovery in an extraordinary skydiving demonstration. World-renowned British adventurer and well-known Land Rover owner Bear Grylls took to the skies to put the Intelligent Seat Fold technology in the all-new Discovery to the ultimate test. When equipped, the system allows Discovery owners to configure their vehicle seating through the Land Rover InControl Remote app on their smartphone from anywhere in the world - even in mid-air. Having jumped from a plane with six members of the Royal Navy Parachute Display Team and freefalling at 125mph, Bear was able to change the vehicle’s seating layout at the touch of a button on his smartphone before he had to deploy his parachute. Once on the ground, all the skydivers were able to jump into a camouflaged prototype of the New Discovery, which comfortably seats seven full-sized adults. When equipped with the optional Intelligent Seat Fold, this world-first technology allows the two rear rows of seats to be fully reconfigured in as as little as 14 seconds via the Land Rover InControl Remote app downloaded
on any iOS or Android operating system. The Intelligent Seat Fold technology can be activated in four different ways, including the remote function tried and tested by Bear Grylls. Closer to the ground, switches within the luggage area and on the C-pillar allow the seats to be moved or folded while
standing beside the vehicle. Row two and three seats can also be raised and lowered using the main touchscreen display on the dashboard. The Land Rover InControl Remote app allows customers using both iOS and Android smartphones to connect with New Discovery from anywhere
in the world, making it possible to perform a variety of functions. From confirming all the windows are closed or checking the fuel level to setting the air conditioning or monitoring its location, the advanced technology brings new levels of customer convenience and connectivity to the premium SUV market.

TECHNOLOGY Few of us expect the electronic devices we rely on to last very long. Cracked screens, slowrunning software, and the appeal of the latest model can consign new smartphones, tablets and laptops to the bin after only a few years of use. Now Ford has introduced a super-tough new version of a technology that most of us use every day – the humble ignition key – which is designed to last a lifetime in the hands of the most demanding drivers. Ford tested the key – for Transit and Transit Custom vans – to ensure it could survive being submerged underwater for 30 minutes, dropped 50 times onto a concrete floor and exposed to temperatures from 60deg C to – 20deg C. To all appearances the fob looks like any other ignition
key, with a keypad to lock the vehicle and a flip-style key blade. However, to ensure it is completely waterproof, it is permanently sealed shut, with the two halves of the plastic housing joined by friction welding. The inside of the key is carefully designed to resist typical workplace impacts, and a rechargeable battery cell is charged whenever the key is placed in the ignition, to ensure it never runs out of charge. “Our customers want a key which can tackle the hard knocks of construction sites and city deliveries, and keep coming back for more,” said Jonathan Allan, Ford tested the key – for Transit and Transit Custom vans electrical engineering supervisor, Ford of Europe. “While a mobile Engineers also tested the key force phone can sometimes let you using using climatic chambers in Endurance – 100,000 down, Ford has ensured that temperatures simulating everything activations in temperatures ranging Transit drivers have a key which is from desert heat to arctic cold, from 50deg C to -10deg C just as rugged as their vehicle,” he and in humidity levels of up to 100 The shockproof key is the latest added. per cent. Lexus has debuted the Kinetic Seat Concept at the 2016 Paris Motor Show that began at the end of September 2016, as a standalone display. MOVABLE SEAT CUSHION AND BACK REST In humans, the spine acts to stabilise the head. It allows the pelvis and chest to rotate in opposite directions, stabilising movement of the head even while walking or jogging. In order to recreate this movement in car seats, the seat cushion

Thus, simply sitting in the seat helps stabilise head movement caused by vehicle motion, keeping the field of vision steady. This reduces the burden on occupants, improving ease of driving and comfort. The centre of the back rest is at shoulder blade height, which induces rotational movement of the chest around the seat’s pivotal axis. This helps to stabilise the head and thus helps to ensure a high level of support. The seat has also been made slimmer, making the overall car lighter in weight. SYNTHETIC SPIDER SILK The threads at the back rest of the spider web-pattern construction are made from environmentally-conscious synthetic spider silk materials* instead of petroleum-derived materials. The main component of this material is protein, which is created through microbial fermentation, then spun and processed into a new material offering superior shock absorbance properties.
