P. THARYAN ith the September 2016 Motown India issue we successfully complete six uninterrupted years of publishing. The October 2016 edition of Motown India will be our sixth anniversary issue. In these six years we
saw automotive journalism change dramatically in terms of technology, know how, content and spread. Auto magazines like ours were almost crushed by the erratic growth of internet based auto journalism. More than journalism, the norms of this noble profession were dictated by all kinds of net based coding which led to a chaotic turn of events. Bloggers, e-commerce sites, half baked automotive portals, etc mushroomed like anybody’s business. Competition became unfair. The corporate world too succumbed to this unnatural glitzy world. But at Motown India we continued to move ahead with the right news and views, both in print as well as on the internet, be it our own website www. motownindia.com or our presence on YouTube or Facebook or Instagram. We did not compromise on good quality auto journalism. Many a times we felt that a level playing field was missing, but we gathered our wits and kept working hard. We have come a long way and this issue of ours proves that. Apart from a special report on the Indian two-wheeler industry, we have several interesting review reports and launch news, motorsport related news and feature reports. The two-wheeler industry report is analytical in nature and contains views of several top bosses of Indian two-wheeler companies. We thank them and their teams for sending in their inputs on time. Last but not the least, we want our readers to continue encouraging us and appreciating our work. That remains our elixir for success and perseverance. www.facebook.com/MotownIndia @MotownIndia www.youtube.com/MotownIndia

President & CEO, National Engineering Industries (NEI) Report : P. THARYAN NEI, popularly known as NBC Bearings, had at the 2016 Auto Expo in New Delhi displayed among other things PreSet hubs for commercial vehicles. How is this business progressing? We partnered ConMet to manufacture PreSet Hub assemblies for heavy commercial vehicle applications in 2014. PreSet hubs utilise pre-adjusted bearings to facilitate proper installation, extend seal and bearing life and ease maintenance. We manufacture and assemble PreSet hubs inside our factory in Durgapura, Jaipur, where quality control is monitored every single step of the way. Using state of the art machines and technology we have achieved the highest levels of precision. Over the years, PreSet Hubs have saved maintenance costs, labour, time, eliminate failures due to bearing’s incorrect adjustments and minimise risk of assembly damage or incorrect assembly of seals. How is the bearing industry performing in the country? What about NBC bearings? The bearing industry in India
is on positive growth trend. The future growth of bearings industry is expected to be led by industrial production as well as demand from automobile sector. The demand for ball, roller and plain bearings is projected to rise 7.3 percent annually to a hundred billion by 2018. According to a new research on “India Bearings Market Outlook to 2019”, the sector is expected to cross over USD 4 billion benchmark by 2019. The bearings market in India is very dynamic and competitive where machine & manpower play an integral role. NBC’s manufacturing prowess boasts of a vast range of bearings that cater to diverse applications in various industries like Automotive, Industrial and Railways. Going forward, Railways is an important segment. We manufacture all types of ball bearings, taper roller bearings, double row angular contact (DRAC) bearings, cylindrical roller bearings, spherical roller bearings and special along with axle Boxes for Railway Rolling Stock. In 2016-2017, one of our key focus areas
is on shifting from standard bearings to new generation bearings which would be bearings with higher life and lesser friction. With your Savli plant in Gujarat becoming operational, how do you see your business growing? Will this plant focus more on exports? Very briefly tell us about your other plants? The plant in Savli, Gujarat is our 4th plant and we are manufacturing bearings for automotive segment in the plant. Capacity of Savli plant is approximately 40 million bearings annually. Savli makes a significant contribution to the company’s exports, which is expected to scale up further in the short term. Currently we are looking for 25% contribution to exports from this plant but it will go up to 50% in due time. The company has four manufacturing plants located in Jaipur, Newai (Rajasthan), Manesar (Haryana) and Savli (Gujarat). All our plants are equipped with global manufacturing and process technology and our current capacity is to the tune of 150
million bearings per year. The Savli plant contributes approximately 40 pc to our total production capacity. Can you tell us about the green initiatives undertaken at the Savli plant? NEI has conceived and conceptualised the Savli plant in Gujarat on a green footing. The ability to develop sustainable buildings has brought the plant novel and prestigious IGBC Platinum Certification, which is the highest green rating available in India. The plant implements a wide range of eco-friendly initiatives such as Rain Water Harvesting, rooftop solar photovoltaic panels, VRF air conditioning, insulated PUF panels for roof, high solar reflective (SRI) top coating, LED lights, sewage treatment plant, native plants to consume less water, autoclave aerated blocks for energy efficiency and recycled fly ash and low VOC paints. Additionally, the spaces are designed for maximum daylight entry and three dimensional energy modelling has been performed to optimize energy and daylight simultaneously.

AUDI A4
AUDACIOUS A4 T Report JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER & Photography: AFSAR BAIG
hey say the only thing better than a German sedan is another German sedan and that has become an endless battle between these stalwarts. But no battle is won without bold moves and Audi has done just that with their new A4 sedan which is expected to launch
www.motownindia.com
in India by September this year. Well, I say bold simply because the new A4 now comes with a smaller engine and better fuel efficiency. But does that mean a drop in performance? We find out... In the pre drive briefing session I learned that the new A4 comes with a 1.4 litre TFSI petrol engine unlike the previous one which came with a 1.8 litre petrol motor.
Well this was rather shocking for me since the entire point of bringing an updated model is to outperform the previous one. But little did I know at the time that the new 1.4 L TFSI was devilishly quick and ferocious. The new engine is in an in-line 4 cylinder format and puts out 150 horses from 50006000 rpm and 250 Newton meters of torque from 1500-3500 rpm. To
put things into perspective the new Audi A4 can go from 0 to 100kmph in just 8.5 seconds and accelerates all the way upto 210kmph. The meat of the power lies high up in the rpm band and one does need to put the A4 through its paces to achieve top performance. However, the motor also delivers a decent torque of 250Nm at a low range thus rendering a very thrilling

drive experience which I can best describe as extremely energetic. The new A4 is also faster than the outgoing model and is more economical with a fuel average of 17kms per litre. The engine comes mated to a 7-speed S-Tronic transmission which essentially is a dual clutch setup and is as smooth as Barney Stinson with women. The gear shifts are not

that evident unless you throw the car in Dynamic mode which makes all the mechanicals more sporty and enjoyable. The A4 comes with four different driving modes -- Auto, Dynamic, Comfort and Individual. The Dynamic mode juices the most out of the engine and renders premium performance. The transmission also comes with a ‘coasting mode’

which caters for free wheel rolling, hence improving efficiency. While Audi has reduced the size of the engine, they have also managed to shred 95kgs off this car. But that does not alter the looks at all. The new A4 still looks bold, broad and aggressive from almost every angle. The new A4 still does look rather similar to the outgoing model but on paying closer

attention one can see the subtle differences. The new A4 gets a striking new design for the head lamps and tail lamps apart from other changes and on the inside the car boasts of luxury, comfort and functionality. It comes with Audi’s virtual cockpit setup which features a fully digital 31.24cm LCD screen right in front of the

driver. As difficult as it is to believe, the screen is not distracting for the driver and has been laid out in a manner which enhances driving efficiency and comfort. The sedan also comes with Audi’s MMI control setup with a central touch control rotary knob which I found quite easy to operate and efficient in its functionality. The MMI display is quite functional with a 21cm monitor displaying a host of handy information. Another unique feature of the A4 is the convenience key which records driver preferences of air conditioning temperature, seat position, music and phone book preferences and sets them when the driver approaches the vehicle. When it comes to comfort, the A4 offers a lot of features which enhance commuting pleasure. It features a dual zone climate control as well as a separate climate control for the rear ac vents. The sedan also comes with pull up blinds for the rear seats, electrically adjustable front seats with a memory function for the driver seat, Audi’s phone box which is capable of charging and integrating QI enabled mobile devices. The interiors exude luxury with a blend of leather and leatherette as well as wooden inlays on the dash and centre floor console. The car also comes with ample of storage spaces and has a roomy back seat which can easily accommodate two large Indian adults. The A4 speaks volumes of Audi’s engineering prowess and provides one of the most dynamic driving experiences one can get on Indian roads. The sedan comes with an independent wheel
www.motownindia.com
suspension with an anti roll bar. The suspension is on the softer side and soaks in most of the jerks and jolts from broken roads. The A4 has great road holding capability which is also thanks to the 225/ 50 R17 Hankook tyres. Even at high speeds the aerodynamic design and reduced drag coefficient coupled with the finely tuned suspension lend the driver a lot of confidence. However, the electromechanical steering feels a bit wooden and drivers who like some feedback will not enjoy it a lot, but then this vehicle is more about comfort for which the steering has been tuned appropriately. The A4 comes with dual circuit disc brakes and have ABS, EBD as well. On the safety front customers also get traction control, 8 airbags, reverse camera and sensors, electronic differential locking and electronic stabalisation control. When it was time to hand over the keys and part ways with the A4, I bid adieu with a big smile. As an auto journo very rarely do we come across one single vehicle which has everything to appease your senses. From every perspective I was quite satisfied that the A4 is probably the best contender in its class as of now. Audi has been quite audacious in cutting engine size and kerb weight but that in turn makes the A4 more efficient. What does remain to be seen is the price point at which it will be launched in India. Knowing Audi for what it is in India, we can expect something extremely competitive. MI

emember the famous words of Carlos Ghosn, the bossman of Renault and Nissan? “This is a car for conquest”, he said in Chennai in the summer of 2015 when the Kwid was launched in its 800cc avatar. It has since conquered a lot for the company in terms of sales. Renault has now introduced the Kwid with a new heart, a one litre (999cc) three cylinder engine. The Kwid was always a bold looking vehicle; it’s now got a stronger heart. Except for the heart transplant, there is nothing substantially different compared to

its 800cc sibling. The 1 litre engine option will only be offered in the RXT variant of the model. The remaining three variants STD, RXE and RXL will only have an 800cc engine. The only two additional features that the 1 litre RXT model will have are the two-tone gloss grey Outside Rear View Mirrors and the speed-sport designer decals on the doors which are quite prominent. As for the rest,, Renault India would have felt that the existing features are good enough and need not be tinkered with at all. We fully agree to that because the car has been offering a lot of comfort, great storage spaces and good ride and handling.

Coming to the engine, it’s definitely a new one, but kind of carved out from the existing 800cc one, for the additional 200cc capacity. The engine produces a peak power of 67 hp at around 5500rpm and a peak torque of 91 Nm at 4250rpm. So do the Alto K10 and the Eon 1 litre have competition and will there be a bit of cannibalisation in its own territory with the Kwid 800 and the Redi-GO from the Nissan stable? Yes, definitely yes. Now that Kwid 800 is a hit among the masses, those keen to have a bit more power and torque will definitely opt for the 1 litre one. The Kwid 1.0 returns a fuel efficiency figure of 23.01 kmpl. In the real world that could come down to 15 or 16 kmpl but then even that is good enough for the aam janta. The 3 port engine sounds a wee bit harsh but overall the motor is not at all loud while accelerating. The cabin is relatively quiet too and the engine picks up speed almost instantly and effortlessly. The engine is mated to a five-speed transmission. Zero to 100km per hour comes in a jiffy and the braking is also satisfactory though an ABS option should have been offered in this 1 litre model. An Automated Manual Transmission offering would have been an icing on the cake. Maybe we can expect one at a later stage.

The Renault Kwid 1 litre simply carries forward the good features of the 800cc sibling. The bold structured front grille, the c-Shapes signature headlamps, body coloured bumpers, wheel arch cladding and the side indicators on them, the fog lamps, the multi spoke wheel cover and of course the integrated roof spoiler, add to the good looks of the Kwid. Step inside and you get to see a dual-tone dashboard sporty steering wheel, premium contoured seats and foldable back seats that increase the boot space to 1115cc from the existing 300 litres when the back seats are upright. There is adequate storage with an upper and a lower glove box. The upper one comes with a smart lid. Storage space for a 1 litre bottle is available on all the door interior panels. This model comes with a touchscreen MediaNAV, USB port, Aux in port, front speakers and a 12V power socket. There is a driver side airbag that is also being offered in the 1 litre. While the Kwid has been a major hit among the masses with its bold stance and its several comfort features, now with a new 1 litre engine, they shall simply be attracting those who are looking for a bit more power in their cars. iverse cultures make up this beautiful country of ours. Many a times the tastes and preferences of people are revealed by the products they buy for themselves. Having ridden a whole bunch of bikes in
my life, it’s so easy to conclude that Harley motorcycles appeal to those with a finer taste in life, besides the deep pockets. Or else why should someone buy a cruiser motorcycle for Rs 16.89 lakh and add expensive bells and whistles to it? When I got my hands on the Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail

Classic, I could not help but look at its girth and fine mature looks. For record’s sake, the word “softail” is a registered trademark of Harley-Davidson motorcycles and was coined with the release of the first Softail motorcycle in the early 1980s. The term softail refers to motorcycles that have a hidden rear suspension system. It’s
basically a hardtail that made soft with rear suspension that is tucked away from prying eyes. The Softail is a good mix of traditional and the modern. This bike is powered by a high output Twin Cam 103B engine which is basically a 1690cc engine producing a low end torque. Peak torque of 130Nm comes at around

3000rpm. One also gets the comfort of cruise control for those long uninterrupted journeys. The fuel tank is an old-school one with a modern 3-D medallion on its side which is glass-inlayed. With its leather saddles, studded seats, laced wheels and white walled tyres, there is a lot the motorcycle scores on the looks front. The saddlebags also get new sagpreventing interior supports as a result of which the bags don’t ever have a dowdy look about itself. The console mounted on the fuel tank displays the odometer, along with an ancillary display for gear and rpm. While the speedometer is loud and clear, the rest of the digital displays could have been brighter and larger. The fuel gauge too is mounted on the tank in a neat rectangle space. Do remember, the Harely is bought by not so young and hence digital displays need to be very prominent. Getting to neutral gear position is not an easy task and for me it was an exercise that led me to sweat profusely, especially at traffic lights. The rider’s position in the Softail is extremely comfortable with large footboards to plant your feet. The tall handlebars made of stainless steel that come standard on the Heritage Softail Classic model make it easy for you to manoeuvre your bike. You have an option for a two-up seat in the Softail and with its broad dimensions and back rest; the passenger can definitely be very comfortable. The pillion seat is also detachable. And in case you feel you want the wind on your face
www.motownindia.com
and in your hair, you even have an option to detach the windshield. When it comes to riding the Softail, it’s an easy exercise. The key fob can always remain in your pocket and all you need to do is to twist the knob on the tank, press down the kill switch on the right side of your handle bar and press the electric start switch next to it. The engine roars to life and then it’s just a changing of gears using the toe-heel rhythm. The high output twin cam 103B engine is quick on its feet and the low end torque is very evident when you twist the throttle. It’s an electronic throttle control which means no cable cluttering up the handlebars. The engine is mated to a six-speed transmission. The Softail comes with standard ABS, which means the giant bike comes to a halt very fast. In fact the new front brake system has got better in this bike with a lot more reduction in the amount of lever force required at peak braking. There’s a new 4-piston fixed caliper with 32 and 34 mm pistons, premium caliper piston coating to minimize initial displacement and a larger 300 mm rotor. It all adds up to more stopping power. The hands-free fob automatically arms and disarms the vehicle electronic security functions as you approach and walk away from the bike. Overall, the Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic is a big sized cruiser but whether it is fun to ride on India’s battered roads, is a question that would best be answered by the close knit Harley-Davidson family! hen I first laid my eyes on the Benelli 600 GT it reminded me a lot of the movie Rocky. The film is based around a struggling boxer Rocky Balboa who eventually ends up becoming one
of the most celebrated boxers of all time and is fondly called the Italian Stallion. Like Rocky, the 600 GT is a short sports tourer with immense capability. But does the 600 GT have enough punch to bag the title of being the Italian Stallion of sports tourers? Despite its short build and compact design the Benelli 600

GT does look quite intimidating from a distance. At a height of 1280mm, weighing in at 243 kilos, the 600 GT does feel like a handful but therein lies the beauty of its Italian origins. The bike is not
intimidating at all, if anything it seems like the most well mannered motorcycle I have ridden in years. The 600 GT is 2150mm long and 840mm wide, it has a wheelbase of 1470mm and a ground

clearance of 150mm. With all the right measurements of making a true champion the Italians have catered for outstanding ergonomics and riding comfort on the 600 GT. But just because this bike is comfortable to ride and has good manners does not mean that it is not aggressive. Sitting at its heart is an inline 4-cylinder, 600cc engine which has the power of 83 stallions. The engine is a high revving one and the meat of the power lies high up in the band but post 7500rpm one can really feel the pace setting in as the surge of power forces you to crouch in. The engine puts out 54.6Nm of torque which is enough for steep gradients or even motoring in higher gears at lower revs. The peak torque however comes in at 10500rpm while the peak power of 83.9bhp comes in at 11500rpm which is in the red line of the power band. The 600 GT is quick to a 100kmph and just keeps
www.motownindia.com
climbing on the speedo until checked. Unfortunately our country does not offer too many roads where the true uninterrupted potential of this bike can be realised. Borrowing from its rich lineage the Benelli TNT 600 GT is agile and fleet footed as well making it a real treat to ride on winding roads. You can shift balance quite easily and don’t need to put in too much effort to maneuver this bike around. The 600 GT rides on 120/ 70 R17 Pirelli tyres in the front and fat 180/ 55 R17 Pirelli tyres in the rear. The tyres come as stock fitment and provide phenomenal grip on and off tarmac. The 600 GT has a inverted telescopic fork up front and an adjustable monoshock in the rear. The suspension set up soaks in bumps and jolts from bad roads with ease thus making it quite ideal for touring Indian roads. With great power comes great responsibility and that can only be done if you stop in time. The 600 GT has dual
hydraulic perforated discs in the front and a single perforated disc in the rear. The front brakes are quite accurate and sharp however we felt the rear brakes could do with more bite and the addition of ABS would be a much welcomed move. The Benelli TNT 600 GT comes with standard fit sissy guards and optional 25 litre panniers are also available on offer. The bike does have the true makings of a tourer, featuring a broad and comfy saddle as well as an ergonomically designed rider position which syncs up well with the foot pegs and handle bar. The switch gear is also top notch and comes with good touch and feel. On the looks front the TNT 600 GT is an eye catcher but leans more towards operational practicality. So coming in at Rs. 6,01,000 (ex-showroom Delhi), this is not only an affordable touring bike but also has enough zeal, panache and power to delight your senses. It is, in my opinion, worthy of being called the Italian Stallion. MI

Volkswagen’s Sebastien Ogier wins WRC; ends six-event winless drought
Frenchman Sebastien Ogier finally put to an end his six-event winless drought and won the ADAC Rallye Deutschland thereby recording his third win of his WRC career on Germany’s tough asphalt roads. He thus extends his lead at the top of the drivers’ championship standings by 14 points, while Volkswagen tops the manufacturers’ championship, thanks to a 55-point lead. Even though it was a tough start for Ogier when he overshot a hairpin in leg one of the rally, he managed to keep his Polo R steady

and a day earlier before the last day of the rally he proved his mettle at the infamous Baumholder military proving ground where he easily swept rally leader – and team-mate – Andreas Mikkelsen aside. With a 20.3s lead, Ogier was able to control his pace at the front on the final leg and emerged from the ninth round of the championship with a precisely-crafted 20.3s advantage over Hyundai’s Dani Sordo. In fact, the Hyundai i20 WRC pair of Sordo and Thierry Neuville outpaced Mikkelsen on the final day in the early

Neuville therefore claimed the final podium spot, while a disappointed Mikkelsen – who narrowly avoided a couple of Power Stage spins as he lost the brakes on his Polo R – had to settle for fourth, according to the WRC report.. Crutchlow first Brit to win MotoGP in 35 years A brave tyre choice and a determined ride in treacherous damp conditions took independent-team Honda rider Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda RC213V) to a historic first MotoGP race win at at the Automotodrom Brno in the Czech Republic on August 21, 2016. It had been raining heavily when Moto2 race was in progress at the Automotodrom Brno in the Czech Republic. When the rain stopped and the MotoGP machines headed out, no one could imagine that Cal Crutchlow would win the race. He made his way through the field in one of the most spectacular victories in recent years, taking the flag to become the first British winner for 35 years. It was the first premier-class Grand Prix victory by a British rider since Barry Sheene in 1981. He also follows Jack Miller (Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS) into the history books as a winner with an independent team in 2016, with wet weather opening the door for many on the grid. “It’s been six years since I won a race, so it’s been a long time coming, though we’ve been close in the past. We should’ve done it a few times before; I really believe that. I was really emotional on the slowdown lap – it’s a super feeling! It was such a long race and tire choice was crucial… Yesterday I destroyed a bike, and I had to apologize to Honda and the team. They were working until midnight last night, so this win is a thank you to them. I hope there are some more to come,” said Crutchlow after the race. By half-distance Crutchlow was the fastest rider on the track and had cut through to fifth. It was a short step from there to seize the lead with seven laps to go, the Briton riding as aggressively as ever to achieve a hugely popular win at the end of his 98th MotoGP race. At the finish the 30-year-old former World Supersport champion was more than seven seconds ahead of Rossi, with Marquez just over two seconds behind the Italian. Crutchlow, with a tyre combination of a hard front and hard rear came suddenly alive as he charged from P15 to come right in front in what can be termed as a stunning display of motorcycle riding. Ducati’s Dovizioso suffered a tyre problem that saw him pull in, as Crutchlow fought to take over at the front. Ace racers Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) and Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) completed the podium in a chaotic race, with the 9-time champion making a small gain on title rival Marquez as the two crossed the line in P2 and P3 respectively. Marquez managed a podium finish despite a bad start which saw Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) and Andrea Iannone (Ducati Team) overtake him.

Mahindra win first two slots at Moto3 in Czech Republic The first and second positions by Peugeot MC Saxoprint rider John McPhee and Jorge Martin (Pull & Bear Aspar Mahindra) at the HJC Helmets Grand Prix Moto3 race in Automotodrom Brno, Czech Republic came as sweet victory for Indian automobile major Mahindra & Mahindra. Peugeot is a Mahindra owned company. For Scottish man John McPhee, it was a first for him and his company as he rode calmly and almost faultlessly, seeing his rivals crashed out in a race held in wet weather. Aspar Mahindra Team’s Pecco Bagnaia was one of many to crash out of the race, hampered by tyre problems that meant he had to push over the limit to try to stay in a points-scoring position. Championship leader Brad Binder of Red Bull KTM Ajo was unfortunate enough to crash out of the lead with 4 laps to go. The next to go was Malaysian Khairul Idham Pawi of Honda Team Asia who also ended up in the gravel. All this led to an extremely dramatic turn of events in the final few laps of the race. Pawi incidentally was the winner in the wet in Argentina and Germany. McPhee’s calm strategy paid off brilliantly as he crossed the line for his first Moto3 win. It was also the first podium of the season for Jorge Martin as he too had an incident free ride on the wet tracks. Third on the podium was Fabio DiGiannantonio (Gresini Racing Moto3). He was the rookie star of the race. He crossed the line ahead of his more experienced teammate Enea Bastianini. Niccolo Antonelli (OngettaRivacold), last year’s winner, completed the top five ahead of Czech rider Jakub Kornfeil (Drive M7 SIC Racing) in a great home result of P6. Bo Bendsneyder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) was seventh in an impressive rookie display, ahead of fellow rookies Joan Mir (Leopard Racing) and Nicolo Bulega (Sky Racing Team VR46). Jorge Navarro (Estrella Galicia 0,0) completed the top ten to gain some points back on Brad Binder in the title fight, but had been further up the field until the final stages. The gap between the two now sees the South African clear of his Spanish rival by 61 points.Moto3™ will be back at Silverstone next time out for McPhee’s home race, with the race set for Sunday 4th September.

MOTORSPORT Exciting Round 4 of 13th JK Tyre FMSCI National Rotax Max Championship On a rain-hit Sunday (August 21, 2016), championship favourite Ricky Donison suffered a double blow that saw him surrender his leadership position after the fourth and penultimate round of the 13th JK Tyre FMSCI National Rotax Max Championship in Kolhapur’s Mohite Racing Academy. Donison of BPC Racing, who had won all three earlier rounds, couldn’t come to terms with the wet and slippery conditions on the track and lost his edge in the Senior Max category. He zipped into the parc ferme area in the scrutiny bay as he felt that he had a problem with his kart. He came back a few minutes later to rejoin the race but by then the race organisers had removed his transponder, deeming him DNF (did not finish) on technical grounds. It meant that he had to be content with 38 points in the final that saw him slip to the second position with 324 overall
points. Chennai’s Vishnu Prasad jumped into the lead in the battle for the championship by finishing third in the pre-final and fourth in the final on an action-packed day. He has a nominal 4-point lead now with 328 points in his bag, going into the final round next month. The round itself was won by Mumbai’s Nayan Chatterjee (Meco Racing) in an exciting race. Starting from the sixth place, he drove aggressively to come into contention in the opening lap itself. By the fifth, he was in the lead and didn’t give any other driver the opportunity to catch him. Interestingly, the Junior Max and Micro Max categories too saw the current leaders, Manav Sharma and Shahan Ali, suffer defeats but that didn’t affect their positions on the championship table. In Junior Max, Manav of Peregrine Racing only managed to finish sixth after struggling with
technical problems with his kart all through the weekend. But that was enough to keep him ahead of the pack with 334 points. Yash Aradhya of Meco won the round to climb one place up to second position with 328 points. In Micro Max, Shahan Ali looked unbeatable till the rains came down. The 12-year-old from Agra preferred not to take any undue risk and couldn’t do anything as Arjun Nair (Meco Racing) sneaked past him in the opening lap itself. Shahan waited for Arjun to make a mistake but that didn’t happen; he made a late charge, even clocking the quickest timing in the last and 15th lap but Arjun held on to his nerve and warded him off. Bangalore’s Arjun is now just 28 points behind the leader in the championship race. MICRO MAX Final (15 laps) 1. Arjun Nair, Bangalore (16:23.165); 2. Shahan Ali Mohsin,

Going into this weekend’s tripleheader, Vikash Anand and Karthik Tharani were locked on 138 points. Anand began his campaign with a second place finish behind
Tharani on Saturday (20th), but won both the starts to seal the championship. Also achieving a double was Raghul Rangasamy who won both the races in the F1300 Rookie Championship and annexed the title. He later went on to claim the championship in the Super Stock class after Race 2 winner Veeresh Prasad was given a 20-second penalty for overtaking under yellow flags which demoted him to fourth place. The result saw Raghul and Veeresh tying on 142 points. Raghul was declared champion
on the basis of three wins to Veeresh’s two on the countback which was employed to break the tie. Goa’s Keith Desouza (UNIMEK Racing) topped the Indian Junior Touring Cars class with a crucial win which helped him finish on 199 points while his nearest rival Ananth Pithawala (Team N1) from Mumbai ended up on 191. Coimbatore’s Arjun Narendran (Red Rooster Racing), who had already clinched the championship in the premium Indian Touring Cars class, ended the season with a double for a tally of 240 points,
well clear of Bengaluru’s Deepak Paul Chinnappa (Race Concepts) who finished on 135. Ishaan Dodhiwala from Delhi won Sunday’s both races in the Volkswagen Vento Cup to consolidate his position at the top of the leaderboard.

The event was held in four competitive legs – Prologue, Predator, Terminator and The Twilight Zone – in different parts of Goa from July 22 to 29, 2016. The Prologue Special Stages (SS) was held in Dona Paula followed by the Predator and the Terminator stages at Quepem (Cavorem) in South Goa and then finally concluding with the

the India chapter of RFC since its inception in Twilight SS at Sattari (Morlem) in North Goa. 2014. But rewinding seven days prior to Virdi & While many competitors made blunders Tung’s victory none of us ever expected to see through the day and some even paid dearly an Indian finish in first. The reasons were quite for them, the Malaysian drivers Tan Eng Joo simple. The Malaysians were exceptionally (with Tan Choon Hong) and Merwyn Lim skilled drivers, their Force Gurkhas were near invincible and the support their teams provided (with Hamizan Bin Abdul Hamid) seemed to was unlike that of any other contender. The first gracefully move forward. Their experience seemed to give them an two days comprised of the Prologue stages in which competitors had to wade through waterholes, cross over crevasses using logs, crawl up steep gradients and make maneuvers which seemed almost impossible. What made all of this possible were the winches! Entering first into SS-1 Tan Eng Joo with co-driver Tan Choon Hong driving the #101 Force Gurkha for Force Motors set the tone for things to come. The exceptional precision and skill which they displayed made RFC India 2016 it quite evident why Winners of the Force Gurkha al Singh Tung Kirp er they had been winning Gurmeet Virdi and co-driv

edge over the rest of the Indian contenders. But as the day drew closer to an end it became blatantly evident that there were a few Indians who were just not going to sit silently and watch the crown slip by. Gurmeet Virdi with codriver Tung had been hammering away at the dirt all day long and day 1’s results showed just that. While Joo and Hong in their #101 Force Gurkha closed the day with 532 points for the top spot, Merwyn Lim with Hamid driving the #102 Force Gurkha for Force Motors settled for second with a nifty 505 points. But leading the charge for India’s campaign was Virdi and Tung who closed the day in third with a total of 482 points in their #104 Gypsy. As the dawning sun beckoned the offroaders back to the soil, a glimmer of hope seemed to adorn the faces of people in the Gerrari Offroaders camp. Meanwhile another contender who many had hoped would be leading the pack seemed to have fallen behind in the fray. Kabir Waraich of Force Motors was not even in the top ten at the close of Day 1. As day 2 continued, so did the onslaught from Virdi and Tung, their performance remained more or less consistent throughout the special stages and that is when we saw the

Malaysians begin to fumble. Joo and Hong got a DNS (Did Not Start) in SS 9 which set them back two spaces by the end of day 2. Lim and Hamid were not as consistent on day 2 either but settled in at second with a total of 985 points and for the first time in RFC India 2016 Gurmeet Virdi and Kirpal Singh Tung took the lead from the Malaysians with a total of 987 points. Day 3 brought with it the Predator SS 13-18 where participants found themselves in extremely precarious positions. Unlike the Prologue stages, this was the wild out doors of the Western Ghats and participants had to tackle the elements along with the unforgiving terrain. Contenders had to make their way through six special stages in an abandoned quarry on the outskirts of a rain forest. The terrain marked near vertical crawls, navigating tight corners at steep gradients and just simply trying not damage man or machine. To make things even more difficult was the rain, which was seemingly incessant. There were some who chose to take it easy and go slow on the track, which resulted in a lot of DNFs on day 3. Others who went flat out were welcome to the end of the stages by loud cheers of enthusiasts
who had flocked to check out the action. Day 3 saw Virdi and Tung widen the gap between themselves and the next contender. They closed the day with a total of 1472 points while Joo and Hong were tied with Lim and Hamid for second with a total of 1460 points. But the highlight of the day was #103 Force Gurkha which was being driven by Kabir Waraich and co-driver Gagan Sachdeva. Waraich and Sachdeva moved up almost 7 ranks since day 1 to close day 3 in third place with a total of 1220 points. The jungle had not yet unleashed all it had and day 4 brought with it the Terminator SS 19-24. The stages were longer, tougher and harder to complete. The obstacles become bigger, taller and more challenging in every way physically and mentally possible. But the dauntless thirty teams were undeterred and kept moving forward. While there was stiff competition in the top three spots, many teams were fighting it out to stay in the top ten as well. One of these teams was V5 Offroaders from Coorg who were in the #118 jeep driven by rally legend Jagat Nanjappa along with codriver Chethan Chengappa, the duo won the Southern Chapter of RFC in India which got

them an automatic entry in the main RFC India 2016 event. While the top three more or less remained the same throughout the event, the competitors lower down the order like Biijender Singh (with Gajender Singh), Dr. Chaitanya Challa (with Shabarish Jagrupu), Cedrick Jordan DaSilva (with Floyd Preston) and Abhinav Reddy Nukala (with Laxmikanth Reddy Thota) were battling it out amongst themselves to move up the order. Many vehicles were flopped over sideways or on their roofs on day 4, some even spinning in the air a few times before landing back on the dirt. Even the top three contenders found the stages a little challenging, while Virdi and Tung were hit by misfortune when their steering failed on SS-24 and the duo were unable to finish the stage in time resulting in a DNF (Did Not Finish). The day’s result reflected just that with Virdi and Tung losing top spot to Lim and Hamid who had a total of 1937 points, a good 40 points ahead of Virdi and Tung. Joo and Hong also were slow through the day and ended up falling to third position. Waraich and Sachdeva moved down to fourth position and Cedrick Jordan DaSilva (with Floyd Preston) moved up three spaces to replace Abhinav

Reddy Nukala (with Laxmikanth Reddy Thota) for the fifth position. The next to come was the Twilight Zone (SS25) in which a total of 21 participants entered, while others could not due to vehicle damages or simply opting not to go in due to the risk involved. But only 16 were able to complete the stage. The rest ended up finishing late or having to be recovered. In the Twilight Zone participants had to cover a tedious trail though the forests. The 21 vehicles had to cross waterfalls, complex rock clusters, steep hill climbs and did it all in the dense rain forest. Winches were out almost throughout the stage and vehicles were being towed out of sticky spots with a few even rolling over the hill side. The true camaraderie of the participants came out in the rain forest. The forest probably challenged the participants in every way possible, their wit, courage, skill behind the wheel and also brought out the spirit of brotherhood in most participants. All contenders who completed the Twilight Zone in duration of 10 hours were rewarded with 100 points. At the end of Day 6 Merwyn Lim and Hamid were still in the lead with a total of 2037 points while Virdi and Tung were still in second trailing the #102 Force Gurkha by 40 points.
Joo and Chong who also completed the twilight zone maintained their position at three. The last and final leg of RFC India 2016 would determine who the ultimate winners were. There were only two special stages – SS 26 and 27 on day 7.The stages had been designed to test the driving dynamics and maneuverability of the vehicles. In a stunning upset, Virdi and Tung managed to inch past Lim and co-driver Hamid to finish first and were crowned overall champions of RFC India 2016. Virdi was quicker than Lim on the Final SS 26-27 and finished with a total of 2177 points, while Lim and Hamid were trailing by 11 points and had a grand total of 2166 points, finishing second overall. The second Force Motors team of Tan Eng Joo and Tan Choon Hong who had won the previous two editions of RFC in India came in third overall with a total of 2111 points. The arduous journey of these brave souls from Punjab was nothing short of heroic. Mind, body and machine all were thoroughly tested on the dirt, some could not complete the journey and some chose not to, but at the end the ones who desired it most were rewarded, as RFC India Season 3 ushered in the winds of change. RocksThars! I MAHINDRA THAR FEST
Report & Photography: JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER
t was a ‘Thar Fest’ and the participants were simply ‘RocksThars’. All one could see were Mahindra Thar SUVs and their spirited drivers at the ‘Thar Fest’ and ‘Club Challenge’ organised by Mahindra Adventure in Goa. The Thar Fest was more of an occasion for Mahindra Thar owners to take their vehicles through slush, pits and water holes, towing logs and navigating through some tricky off road terrain and and also driving their vehicles in the Thar Parade. A few popular off road clubs from across the country were in Goa to participate in the Mahindra Adventure ‘Club Challenge’. These clubs had to compete in some tricky obstacle courses designed around the natural landscape of Miramar, Goa. Thar owners and participants also got to compete in the ‘Strong Thar Contest’ and ‘Deep Trench Challenge’ events. Awards were also given to participants for ‘Best Modified Thar’. The ‘Club Challenge’ however was a different ballgame altogether. It tested the competitors for skill, strength, wit and courage. Club members were required to cover a set of different stages which required complete coordination and team work. Each team had three vehicle entries -- stock, modified and pro-modified. It all began with the night stages where the first team event called ‘Pass the Baton’ saw all three Thars coordinating and pulling a bundle of logs tied down with chains. The stage required them to navigate through rutted trenches, slush pits and then navigating up a steep gradient with sharp corners. ‘Pass the Baton’ stage was won by the Gerrari Off-Roaders team. The second night stage was called ‘Trench Trouble’ it required the participants to navigate their vehicle into a deep trench where the team had to unbolt all four wheels, put their vehicle on stands and carry the wheels up the trench in four different directions. Their team mates were then required to re-bolt the wheels and recover themselves from the Trench. The second night

stage was also won by the Gerrari Off-Roaders team. Day 2 of the Club Challenge saw competitors engaging in a rather off beat challenge called ‘Goalll’. The idea was to score a goal with their Thars using just the bumpers and tyres of the vehicle in the least possible time. This challenge was won by team BODA. The next two stages were much more complicated and really put the teams to test. The fourth obstacle was ‘Trench Trouble 2’, where competitors had to navigate down a steep gradient, then out of it and again back into the pit. The objective was to collect flags which had strategically been placed throughout the trench. V5 Off-Roaders from Coorg won this challenge.
The last and final obstacle to complete was the ‘Bus Stop’ challenge where in one vehicle from the team had to climb over an SUV, then a water tanker, a bus and finally climb down over a few SUVs and cars. All competitors were making use of their winches in this stage which proved to be the most efficient way of completing the challenge. Gerrari Off-Roaders and V5 Off-Roaders tied for first in this stage, while the V5 Off-Roaders team was crowned overall champions of the Mahindra Adventure ‘Club Challenge’. Gerrari Off-Roaders won the 1st runner up title and Team Flywheel from Kerala won the 2nd runner up title. Both man and machine were thoroughly tested during the ‘Club Challenge’ as the spirit of camaraderie brought out the best in them.

hey say a lot depends on rains. The year 2016 is witnessing good monsoons and these rains are expected to have a positive impact on agriculture which in turn will increase rural incomes, stabilise prices of food grains and pulses and will leave a lot more money in the hands of people to buy everything from televisions, refrigerators, cars to two wheelers. Salary increases for hundreds and thousands of government employees as a result of the 7th Pay Commission recommendations will be the icing on the cake that will further fuel demand. The Indian two-wheeler industry is gleefully hoping that the remaining months of the current fiscal 2016-17 will see a spurt in demand for two wheelers. When it comes to overall sales, the first few months of 201617 fiscal have been heartening, according to the data provided by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). A quick glance reveals that two wheelers comprising scooters, motorcycles and mopeds grew by 14.08pc when it came to domestic sales for the period April to July 2016. This meant that in the first four months of the current fiscal domestic sales
TWO-WHEELER SPECIAL of two wheelers stood at 6019076 units as compared to 5276156 units in the corresponding period last year. Of this total domestic sales, motorcycles and step-throughs contributed 3850441 units (3521076 units) growing 9.35pc, while scooters contributed 1876595 units (1511797 units), growing a healthy 24.13pc. Domestic sales of mopeds grew by 20.04pc to 292040 units (243283 units). The first four months of this fiscal showed negative growth on the export front with exports dropping (-) 10.03pc to 780256 units (867220 units). Motorcycle exports dropped by 12pc to 688414 units (782463 units), while both mopeds and scooter showed positive growth in exports. Scooters grew by 7.47pc t o 85,063 units (79147 units) and mopeds by 20.84pc to 6779 units (5610 units). HERO & HONDA, FIGHT FOR SUPREMACY The two companies Hero MotoCorp and Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India are ruling the roost in the Indian two-wheeler industry and these erstwhile partners are today the biggest rivals. During April-July 2016 HMSI grew by 20.34pc at 1667425 units while Hero MotoCorp grew by 7.81pc
at 2227003 units. While the two wheeler companies have surpassed the million unit mark in this period, the closest to this mark was TVS Motor Company with 817967 units for AprilJuly 2016, registering a growth of 18.67pc. TVS was followed by Bajaj Auto with sales of 723204 units, registering a growth of 14.89pc. Cumulative domestic sales for the period April 2016 to July 2016 as compared to the four months of the previous fiscal have been relatively positive for all two wheeler manufacturers, except for two manufacturers— Mahindra Two Wheelers and Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd. with the two companies recording a negative growth of (-)39.98pc and (-)18.48pc, respectively. Their sales dropped to a mere 26,009 units and 91,228 units respectively for the period. Within the two-wheeler space, of the 6019076 units of two wheelers sold in the domestic market in the first four months of the current fiscal (April to July 2016), scooters contributed 1876595 units. The remaining was taken up by sale of mopeds where TVS Motor company is the only player. In 2015-16, April to July 2015 period, two wheeler manufacturers had sold 5276181 units in the domestic market. In the same period, cumulative domestic sales of scooters constituted 1511797 units, signifying about 29pc share in the total two wheeler sales. Motorcycles at that point of time accounted for 3521076 units, constituting almost 67pc of total two wheeler sales. It is thus obvious that there is an apparent shift in customer preferences towards scooter, a trend that has been growing in the last few years. In 2014-15, April to July

2014 period, 5256429 units of two wheelers were sold in the domestic market. Of this scooters contributed 1382558 units signifying a 26pc share, while motorcycles sold roughly 3631964 units, signifying 69pc sales. In 2013-14, the story was a lot more different with scooters constituting 23pc of domestic sales for the period April to July 2013. Total two wheelers sold in the domestic market during this period was 4622669 units of which scooters accounted for 1057029 units and motorcycles accounted for 3333628 units, which meant it had a share of 72pc of the market. It is very evident that the share of scooters in the overall domestic sales of two wheelers has been increasing over the years. Leading this scooterisation drive is obviously Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India with its popular Honda Activa brand. Says Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Senior Vice President - Sales & Marketing, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd, “Activa today represents the metamorphosis of the society. The superior convenience, unisex appeal coupled with product features (increased mileage, style and technology) has converted millions from pillions to riders. Honda’s Activa has come to symbolise a remarkable blend of reliability, comfort & convenience, style and uncompromised performance.” Year 2016 2015

Wheelers and Piaggio.
Ending the 17 year long monopoly of motorcycles, Honda’s Activa (an automatic scooter) is now ruling two-wheeler sales and is India’s highest selling twowheeler of 2016. It has a lead of over 1 lakh units over its nearest competition. Activa’s domestic sales stood at 1,338,015 units in 2016 (Jan’16 to June, 2016) compared to 1,233,725 units in the same period of 2015. Activa added a phenomenal 197,295 units over last year in just six months (Jan to June, 2016) to be on the top! Since its launch in 2001 as the 1st two-wheeler by Honda 2Wheelers India, Activa has reactivated the dying automatic scooter market. Sales of Activa rose exponentially from 55,000 units in its debut year (FY’2001-02) to over 2.46 million units in last FY’201516. Every second automatic scooter purchased in India today is a Honda Activa. In fact Activa sales alone contributes 15pc to the domestic 2 wheeler industry – which is more than entire 125cc motorcycle segment sales put together! There is no denying the fact that HMSI is indeed the clear leader in the scooter segment in the country. Of the seven scooter makers in the country, HMSI is the clear leader with sales of 1106284 units during April-July 2016. Second on the list is Hero MotoCorp, followed by TVS Motor Company, India Yamaha, Suzuki Motorcycle, Mahindra Two Jan

“With more than 50% market share, Activa continues to be in the forefront of scooter demand. To cater to the increasing customer demand, Honda 2Wheelers India has appropriately invested in a scooter only plant at Vithalapur in Gujarat. We believe the scooterisation trend has just started in India and Activa is the trendsetter of the segment today,” notes Guleria of HMSI. Commenting on the scooterisation of the two-wheeler industry, Roy Kurian, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. Ltd. says “People are shifting from motorcycles to scooters now, which is quite evident, this is happening mostly in cities and also in tier II and tier III cities as well because more and more females have started working or are going to colleges and they want personal mobility. We are able to see that this change is happening and earlier the contribution of scooters was 25%-30%, now it is at 35%. What I feel is in a year or two you’ll see scooters contributing to more than 40%. Already some states have crossed 60%, like Kerala scooters are more than 60-65%. Tamil Nadu is at 60%. Entire west, if I talk about Maharashtra, is more than 50%. This change in trend that we’re able to see, it hasn’t come to the North at the moment but I believe eventually it’s going to come to the North as well. These are the changes which I’m able to see from my side.” Equally excited about the growth of the scooter market is Arun Siddharth, Head – Marketing (Motorcycles), TVS Motor Company who says, “The scooter segment has performed consistently well for us and we Mar

have a 14 percent market share in scooters and we sell 65,000 scooters every month. We intend to grow our market share in the scooter segment to 16-17 percent. Jupiter is our flagship product and the new MillionR edition that we recently launched with 10 new features has been received well in the market. “We believe the scooter industry is poised to expand and with a wide product portfolio that we have, we will be able to cater to a wide range of consumers with products designed to meet their needs.” Mahindra Two Wheelers may be a late entrant to the Indian twowheeler market but is surely and slowly introducing new products into the market to garner market share. Says Vinod Sahay, CEO, Mahindra Two Wheelers, “With the rise in the purchasing power and internet penetration across all segments, the Indian consumer is becoming increasingly aware of the latest technology, features and is ready to explore new products. This has led to a clear polarization of the market with one end of the segment, opting for the premium and innovative products, whereas the other end who are still value conscious.” THE MIGHTY MOTORCYCLE BRANDS On one end of the Indian motorcycle market are the so called affordable motorcycles with engine capacities in and around 100cc and 300cc. But as power of the engine increases and performance gets into a new level, enter players like Harley-Davidson, Triumph, Kawasaki, Ducati, Benelli (DSK Benelli), MV Agusta, Indian Motorcycle and the likes. Triumph could only manage 471 units while India Kawasaki sold 505 of their motorcycles. “We have built a firm foundation over the past seven years and consistently demonstrated the power of being a customer-led company very successfully. Our market share as per SIAM currently stands at 59.8% which is significantly more than the combined share of other players,” says Vikram Pawah, Managing Director, Harley-Davidson India. But players like Benelli of Italy are very aggressive on the Indian soil. This Shirish Kulkarni controlled DSK Motowheels the company that has collaborated with legendary Italian superbike manufacturer Benelli recently shifted its CKD plant from Wai, Maharashtra to Takwe, near Pune. This shift has enabled the company to achieve a production capacity of 500 – 600 units per month. The plant currently operates in single-shift and has two assembly lines – one each for the engine and for the motorcycles where Benelli and Hyosung models are assembled. The company plans to begin its capacity expansion programme at the plant post the launch of the Benelli 302R. By 2018, the company should reach a production capacity of 50,000 units per year.

Various brands have established themselves in the past 6-7 years. While not all of them have published figures, the superbikes market is about 12,000 vehicles annually, making India one of the most potential markets for superbikes. He says, “India’s Two-wheeler market is one of the largest and the fastest growing in the world. The CAGR of luxury bike market is projected at 20% till 2020. We are very excited with the positive response received by Indian Motorcycle launch in India. In the year 2011, Polaris acquired Indian Motorcycles and in the year 2013, we launched Indian Motorcycle’s products internationally. It took us about six months to introduce the entire range in India and it was in May 2014 that we inaugurated our first dealership in India in Gurgaon. It has been almost two years since then and it has been an upward journey for the brand.”

COVER REPORT
YADVINDER SINGH GULERIA Senior Vice-President, Sales and Marketing, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India July 2016 seems to be a month of records for HMSI. Record sales, record exports, record market share, record scooter sales, did you see this coming? Do we expect such a phenomenal growth to continue for HMSI? July 2016 has been especially remarkable month for Honda 2Wheelers India. Witnessing steady growth in customer demand, Honda’s market share zoomed to all time high of 29.1% in domestic market (1% up) in July’16. Led by Activa – India’s No. 1 selling two-wheeler of 2016, Honda’s automatic scooter sales crossed the 3 lac mark for the first time, growing a robust 19%. Foreseeing the future increase in the demand for scooters, we inaugurated our first scooter only plant with 12 lakh units annual capacity at Vithalapur in Gujarat. The first line started operations in February 2016 and within just four months the second assembly line with additional 6 lakh units was started increasing HMSI’s total annual production capacity to 58 lakh (5.8 million) units. The favourable macro-economic sentiments backed by good monsoon and 7th Pay Commission are expected to further boost demand in the upcoming festive season. HMSI is well prepared in advance with appropriate inventory build-up and will ensure product availability till the last mile network. We aim to close this festive season with highest record sales. Your scooter Activa has taken the country by storm and with its success a craze for scooters has emerged in a massive way. Your competitors too have followed suit with scooters of different kind. Are you satisfied with the manner in
www.motownindia.com
which you recreated India’s scooter segment single handedly? Activa-India’s undisputed twowheeler king, today represents the metamorphosis of the society. The superior convenience and unisex appeal coupled with product features (increased mileage, style and technology) have helped the resurgence of scooters and thus, drive the ‘Scooterisation’ trend. Factors such as the increasing number of working women, improved infrastructure generating demand beyond urban markets, penetrating semi-urban and rural areas and increasing participation from elders as active members of the family is further propelling the growth of scooters in India. Increased and growing acceptance of scooter for commuting in India is further leading to the sub segmentation of scooters. (For eg. Light-weight compact scooterActiva-i, family scooter-Activa-3g, moto scooter-Dio, Premium 110cc scooter Aviator and Premium 125cc scooter -Activa 125) With more than 50% market share, Activa continues to be in the forefront of scooter demand. To cater to the increasing customer demand, Honda 2Wheelers India has appropriately invested in a scooter only plant at Vithalapur in Gujarat. We believe the scooterisation trend has just started in India and Activa is the trendsetter of the segment today. In 2001, Honda challenged to introduce Activa, a 4 stroke automatic scooter in a declining scooter market. And today, even after 15 years of it’s existence it is not just the category leader, but the No.1 selling 2wheeler in the country with continuous evolution in technology and innovation over the years. Overall, do you see the Indian two-wheeler market
moving away from the commuter segment into a much more value added segment…more premium in nature? Or it will always be a market dominated by price? What about superbikes and premium bikes, do you see this segment growing? This question reminds me of our tourism promotion punch line ’Incredible India’. In a homogeneous country like India, heterogeneous demand trends are projected by different geographical regions and states. While the emerging key trends are visible, however, we are still a long way from a total transformation from the commuter segment. Having said that, we don’t mean the commuter segment shall remain the same in terms of features, style and aesthetics. Definitely we will see that changing a lot in years to come. But still we shall see around 70% contribution coming from 2wheelers up to 125cc engine displacement. Premium bikes belong to a niche segment and their demand is restricted to Tier 1 cities to an extent, however demand is being created in Tier 2 cities for less than 1000cc bikes especially among the bike enthusiasts. Now with your fourth plant in operation, what kind of capacity utilisation are you expecting at your plants? At present, Honda 2Wheelers India is the only manufacturer producing at optimum capacity across all four plants. The first line at our Gujarat plant started operations in February 2016 and in June the second line
with additional 6 lakh units annual capacity was started making it the ‘fastest ever expansion’ to 100% capacity creation achieved in just four months of plant inauguration by Honda 2wheelers India. We are targeting 54 lakh (5.4 million) sales this fiscal and are ready for the next level of expansion. We will be introducing a third line with 6 lakh annual capacity at our Karnataka plant by the mid of 2017. This addition will increase the annual production capacity of Honda 2Wheelers to 64 lakh (6.4 million) units. With monsoons being normal this year, does it bode well for the 2 wheeler segment? Record sales for HMSI this fiscal? A good monsoon is expected to translate into a surge in demand from rural markets. In addition, the festive spirit has begun to set in parts on India starting with Kerala, where the sales are expected to peak during Onam, followed by other regions of the country. There is a robust demand coming from across centres and we are geared up for the upcoming festive season.

COVER REPORT
TWO-WHEELER SPECIAL
ROY KURIAN
Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Yamaha Motor India Sales The Indian two-wheeler industry is evolving and maturing at a very fast pace. Do you see this evidence in terms of the changing pattern of product preferences and choices among buyers? Is the market now getting more skewed towards automatic scooters or do motorcycles still have a great future? Yes, you’re right. India is changing and you can see the two-wheeler industry, the way its growing. This year we should be closing around 16 million. What I see is, in 2020, we should be at 20 million. There is a shift in preferences and people are looking at more stylish products. This is happening in terms of not only scooters or motorcycles, it’s happening across all segments. People are shifting from motorcycles to scooters now, which is quite evident, this is happening mostly in cities and also in tier II and tier III cities as well because more and more females have started working or are going to colleges and they want personal mobility. Earlier the contribution of scooters was 25%-30%, now it is at 35%. Commuter bikes have always been the bread and butter products for any mass market vehicle maker. Now do you feel
that this segment is being redefined by the commuter for perhaps more stylish and more technologically savvy products and that he is ready to shell out more for this? India is basically a commuter segment market only, by and large. Even the scooters people are buying, they are majorly commuter. Around 70-80% are commuter segment customers. They are tech savvy. They want more and more in their products. Indian customers don’t want ‘world class’ products. What Indian customers want is a ‘high tech’ product which is having features of a ‘world class’ product at a bare minimum price. Looks wise, style wise, everything should look like a world class product having all the features, but the price should be very low. When you talk about world class, does it mean world class in terms of performance or the build quality? I’m talking about build quality. The quality of things or parts which are used in products has to be world class. Even the cable wire I am talking about, such a small thing, should be world class. Because there is microchipping happening every time inside a motorcycles engine. When you talk about world class products you don’t see these kinds of things happening in those big bikes or worldwide. Here people are interested in their bikes but they will only use the product for two or three years and then switch to a new one. Those days are gone where people used to buy one motorcycle and keep it for generations, it’s not like that anymore. They want to use it for some time and then change it. What they are looking for is after 3 years will they get an appropriate

price for it or not. Coming to India Yamaha Motor, how will you describe the growth of your company? Do you feel the company has an exciting portfolio of products that addresses every segment of the market? And when it comes to marrying performance and mileage, do you feel your Blue Core technology has delivered big time? Satisfaction is very relative. In this context, I’m happy to see that Yamaha has grown in the last couple years and today we’re clocking some 70,000 bikes a month. And this number has come from just a time span of twothree years. We we’re hovering around 20,000-30,000, now we’re at 70,000, which means we’re gunning for 1,000,000 including exports alone this year. Next year we’re looking at 1,000,000 in domestic sales alone. This is a very healthy sign for us. I’m not satisfied but I’m happy, because if a sales team becomes satisfied, it’s not good for the organisation. We have to try more, because India is a big market, a 20 million market. If we sell anything less than 2,000,000, by 2020, its not justified. Mileage has always been a major concern for customers in India, and this is something we were able to crack as people expected power and performance from the DNA of Yamaha. Besides that people we’re always asking ‘is Yamaha able
to give mileage?’ Our research team has cracked this with the BlueCore technology. BlueCore technology is very unique, I can say. It first came with our FZ- FI, and now you see almost all the products are having BlueCore technology. It’s basically working on three things, it optimizes the combustion, so fuel isn’t wasted. It’s reducing the power loss, when the bike is moving, because of the light weight aluminium we have used in the engine. This results in maximum mileage. We’re able to see we are gaining attention from more customers because of BlueCore. It was never expected that a 150cc bike like FZ, the mileage touches around 50kmpl and all our scooters are giving around 60kmpl. Customers have started coming back and telling us that our bikes have started giving mileage without compromising its quality or performance. It has been a breakthrough for us. BlueCore is helping us a lot. With India’s tier II and III cities and towns progressing in terms of wealth generation, how successful has Yamaha been in tapping these areas? What percentage of sales of your products comes from tier I and what percentage constitutes tier II and above? Do you see the latter contributing more in the coming years? Frankly speaking, it is coming from tier I and some portion from
www.motownindia.com
TWO-WHEELER SPECIAL tier II. We follow a top down approach and first we attacked all the ‘A’ cities then ‘B’ cities and then further going down. We are doing around 40,000 motorcycles.
This 40,000 extra has come from scooters and scooters are more concentrated in tier I and tier II cities. It will take some time to go down to tier III but it will eventually
definitely go. Right now we are getting our volumes from tier I and tier II. However, we had launched a new product, the Saluto 125cc last year and the Saluto RX this
COVER REPORT year. This is a commuter segment product and essentially this sells in tier III. There we have started rapid expansion of network and one by one we’re going down to that level.

Head – Marketing (Motorcycles), TVS Motor Company. TVS while achieving a good growth in motorcycle sales has recorded negative growth in scooter sales for July 2016. What was the reason for this, especially when the scooter segment is showing a positive growth and you have a strong product in the Jupiter? The scooter segment has performed consistently well for us and we have a 14 percent market share in scooters and we sell 65,000 scooters every month. We intend to grow our market share in the scooter segment to 16-17 percent. Jupiter is our flagship product and the new MillionR edition that we recently launched with 10 new features has been received well in the market. We believe the scooter industry is poised to expand and with a wide product portfolio that we have, we will be able to cater to a wide range of consumers with products designed to meet their needs. How would you describe the performance in terms of sales of your motorcycle brands led by Apache? The motorcycle segment has witnessed good growth and we have received a very good response for the products we launched this year - TVS Victor and TVS Apache RTR 200. TVS Apache market share is currently 17% and is expected to grow to 22% in the premium segment. Our market share is growing in all the segments we are present in and we expect the sales to peak during the upcoming festive season. Also with expectations of a good monsoon this year, the rural

economy will be benefited leading to higher motorcycle sales. Overall, do you see the Indian two wheeler market moving away from the commuter segment into a much more value added segment...more premium in nature? In a country like India, we need to cater to demands of consumers across segments. Our customer inspired engineering approach has enabled us to introduce a complete product portfolio that straddles across the economy, executive and premium segments of the two wheeler market. We believe that all segments will grow with increasing purchasing power with people, this includes the commuter as well as the premium segment. From a consumer standpoint, gone are the days, when twowheelers were perceived just as a sign of mobility. Two –wheelers have historically been designed to provide safe, efficient and comfortable rides from point A to point B. Today, the two-wheelers have become a symbol of status; excitement and pride, while continuing to serve their original purpose. Overall, the future of twowheeler industry in India for both motorcycles and scooters looks extremely exciting and promising. But generally speaking yes; we see the market upgrading gradually. You have a tie up with BMW for bikes below 500cc. What’s the progress on this project for both the Indian as well as the global markets? The project is progressing as per
planned schedule and we plan to launch our first 310 cc motorcycle, developed under the common platform with BMW, before the end of this fiscal. Even though both the companies will be using the same platform, each one of us will have our own approach to design and development of the products in line with our focused strategy and targeted markets. TVS has apparently become aggressive on the motorsport arena. Is it a conscientious move to spread the TVS brand awareness among the youngsters and a bid to promote motorsports related activities among Indians? TVS Racing is strongly committed to promote two-wheeler racing in India and generate interest and boost support for the sport in India. We have been making continuous efforts to take the sport to as many sections of the society as possible for the past 33 years. TVS Racing has been actively participating on and off- road racing events such as road racing, Super-cross and Motocross, Dirt Tracks, Rally etc. We have won eight championships across all forms of two-wheeler motorsport events - Supercross, Rallies and Road racing last year.
Earlier this year TVS Racing announced that their champion rider Aravind KP will represent TVS Racing in Dakar 2017. This is the third consecutive year that Sherco-TVS team will be participating in the 39th edition of Dakar Rally (January 2, 2017 – January 14, 2017). The team also took a historic step when they signed their first woman rally rider – Shreya Sunder Iyer - to race for their team. TVS Racing also added another feather in their cap by announcing an exclusive collaboration with the new Alisha Abdullah Racing Academy for Women– India’s first training school for women racers. They will support the academy with the racing bikes and technical expertise. The academy has shortlisted 18 women riders who will race exclusively for TVS Racing Team in the first year. What we learn from the racetrack through TVS Racing, we look to build in our Apache

With monsoons being normal this year, does it bode well for the 2 wheeler segment? Do you see record sales this fiscal 2017? We believe a good monsoon this year will trigger demand from the
rural segment which in turn will benefit the two-wheeler industry. We are systematically investing in brands to attain the desired market share. Our immediate focus is to improve our market share and grow consistently.
SHIRISH KULKARNI Chairman, DSK Motowheels DSK Motowheels has two separate tie-ups, one with Hyosung and the other with Benelli. The company is in the news more because of Benelli. Does that mean the Hyosung tie up has taken a back seat? How will you describe the progress made by your company in India so far? We are working with both of our partners with great synergy. There are many projects in the pipeline, along with product launches from DSK Hyosung, which are in the final phase for their 2017 rollout. This includes the all new DSK Hyosung GV250 (FMC), DSK Hyosung GT300R and an all new DSK Hyosung GT650R (FMC). We already offer an extremely wide range of bikes from 250cc onwards to cater to every customer segment. DSK Hyosung is already a well settled player in the industry and its brand positioning is well entrenched. Besides, DSK Benelli comprises of Street naked and touring motorcycles and DSK Hyosung consists of sportsbikes and cruisers. Therefore, they have very different offerings targeted towards different customers and demographics. Hence there is minimal overlapping in terms of strategy. In fact, the two brands also help us as a company to offer a wider and more comprehensive range of superbiking experiences to our patrons. At present we enjoy 23 percent market share in the superbike industry, with a sale of 2200 units of DSK Benelli superbikes
and 1500 units of DSK Hyosung superbikes last fiscal year. DSK Motowheels has always believed in exploring new avenues and dimensions in the market. This has allowed us to secure a sizable market share in the Indian superbike industry. Apart from our sales in Tier –I cities, DSK Motowheels has also experienced a 60% surge in demands from tier-II and tier-III cities, owing to our strategic tie-ups. Do you credit yourself for bringing in superbikes at some affordable prices? What is the USP of the Benelli motorcycles? Is it the price, the styling, the performance or a combination of several factors? India is a complex market and requires a unique strategy to address its requirements. It is, on one hand, driven by quality and consumer experience, whilst, on the other, the price point of a product also plays a significant role. Moreover, providing a distinct style and performance is imperative. At DSK Motowheels we focus on all the factors that govern the consumer psyche, and price our products at affordable rates without compromising on quality. We took the first steps towards making superbikes ‘within the means’ for aspiring owners in the country. Our USP is our feature rich and quality products that deliver the most cutting-edge experience to motor-biking lovers. What’s more,

our superbikes are priced most competitively, making them all the more attractive to the discerning Indian consumer. Additionally, we also offer a large sales and service network pan-India and pride ourselves on providing the best customer centric service and after sales support in the Indian superbike market. All of these innate qualities of the DSK Motowheels brand make us perfectly poised to be market leaders in India. Overall, Do you see the Indian premium motorcycle segment growing? What about the business of motorcycle accessories? The Indian superbike industry is growing steadily and is demonstrating a robust expansion on the back of heightened demand. There is an increased inclination in India towards a superbiking culture and adventure enthusiasts are taking their passion more seriously than ever before. In fact, as per SIAM data, considering only the superbikes that come via the CKD and CBU route, the industry has recorded 38 percent growth in the last financial year. These numbers exemplify that
superbike enthusiasts are going all out and are willing to spend considerable sums to own the motorcycle of their dreams. As far as accessories are concerned, we already have accessories on offer and are introducing more varieties and options for consumers to customize their bikes. Accessories help bike owners to reflect their own style through their machines and that’s why they form a core part of our offerings. From superlative CNC parts, riding gear, helmets with sleek design features to quirky and creative stickers and decals, DSK Benelli and DSK Hyosung owners have access to an entire range of attractive accessories to make sure their bikes are an extension of their own personality and taste. CEO, Mahindra Two Wheelers Overall, do you see the Indian two-wheeler market moving away from the commuter segment into a much more value added segment...more premium in nature? Or it will always be a market dominated by price? The Indian two wheeler market is unique compared to its competition in the developing world with multiple segments, each with its own differentiated needs. With the rise in the purchasing power and internet penetration across all segments, the Indian consumer is becoming increasingly aware of the latest technology, features and is ready to explore new products. This has led to a clear polarization of the market with one end of the
segment, opting for the premium and innovative products, whereas the other end who are still value conscious. As of today, the majority of the market continues to fall in the value segment, but the premium segment is growing exponentially and is expected to become a sizeable chunk in the near future. Coming to the Mojo, what are the different activities being undertaken by the company to promote the product? Since the launch of Mojo nearly a year back, it has followed a strategy which has kept the consumer at the centre. We believe that a happy Mojo owner is our strongest brand ambassador. Indian Motorcycle launch in India. In the year 2011, Polaris acquired Indian Motorcycle and in the year 2013, we launched Indian Motorcycle’s products internationally. It took us about six months to introduce the entire range in India and it was in May 2014 that we inaugurated our first dealership in India in Gurgaon. It has been almost two years since then and it has been an upward journey for the brand. I am very satisfied with the performance. For us, India is

TWO-WHEELER SPECIAL CAGR of 20% till 2020. The prices of your vehicles start from the Rs 10 lakh plus level to around the Rs 30 plus lakh range. Are Indians ready for such expensive vehicles or do we see more demand in the Scout range of vehicles? Increasing aspirations, changing lifestyle and an increased purchasing power is altering the biking landscape in India. The growing appetite for luxury is leading to an increased off take of the premium luxury bikes in the country. The desire to own a piece of luxury is acting as an incubator for the superbike segment. The change in the biking culture in India has the potential to completely alter the premium luxury bike landscape of our country and usher a brand new era of bikes. The outlook for the Premium motorcycles seems very promising as the overall consumer spending and high net worth individual (HNI) population is on rise. According to “Premium Motorcycles Market Forecast & Opportunities in India, 2017, report the sales of luxury bikes have grown at a rate of 35% over
the last three years in India—the fastest among motorbikes.Having said that, I would like to reiterate that these are still very early days for the Luxury motorcycles as a segment. Our Chief range starts at Rs 24 lakh and upwards up to Rs 38 lakh. These bikes are super premium and so are the customers. With the introduction of the Indian Scout which starts at Rs 11.99 lakh, we are even seeing a comparative larger appeal among the luxury motorcycle space. In fact, with Scout and Scout60 we are expediting the dream of bike enthusiast who always had the dream of owning an Indian Motorcycle and that’s where the volumes are also building up. You have around seven dealerships in the country with more coming up. What is the road map for increasing your dealerships? Yes, you are right. Our dealer network expansion is going on full steam with the recent addition of the seventh dealership in Chandigarh. We have a plan of opening few more dealerships in the coming months, Kolkata, Cochin and Jaipur are under
construction. Our commitment towards Indian market can be gauged from the fact that we have brought the entire Indian Motorcycle’s Chief range – Indian Chief Classic, Indian Chief Vintage, Indian Chieftain, and Indian Chief Dark Horse along with Indian Scout Sixty, Indian Scout and Indian Roadmaster to India. Do we at any stage see an assembly operation for the Polaris products including the motorcycles, or is it too early for the company to look into that area? Any worthwhile investment in manufacturing would require a steady demand pattern for a considerable period of time. As far as Indian Motorcycle is concerned, we are looking at a time frame of 2-3 years to start an assembling unit in India. This decision will largely depend upon the demand pattern of the vehicle. If the demand curve continues a positive trend, which it seems it will, we could start with CKD facility in say next 2-3 years from now. However, as of now we have not finalized anything and therefore not in a position to share any kind of proposed investment figure. We
COVER REPORT are committed to Indian market and whatever investment would be required it would be done. I have only one point to addhere, since you have asked about manufacturing. Automobile sector does not work in isolation and its failure or success have a direct bearing on the allied sectors like the auto component Industry. So rationalization of the exorbitantly high import duty structure on CBU would not only help in reducing the prices of the end product but will help in increasing the sales of the luxury vehicles further which would help the demand off take of the allied industries. Once the demand for these vehicles picks up, I am sure the manufacturers will find it more prudent to establish a manufacturing base here in India rather than importing these vehicles in order to get economies of scale. The key is to make global products manufactured in India and the biggest bottleneck, contrary to common belief, is the high import duty.So I would request the government to pay some attention towards the development and growth of this segment, which holds great promise and is also capable of providing jobs in large numbers.

Not only A + cities like Pune, Mumbai and Ahmedabad but we have had customers coming in from much smaller towns to own a MV, which has been their dream. As we put more and more products on the road, I am sure this will continue. We also look forward to introduce 2 new models by 2017 including the new Brutale 800; which would be our first launch next year These bikes are coming in CBU form. Would you
consider an assembly route at a later stage? We have received a tremendous initial response. Our manufacturing strategy will evolve in a step by step manner, to suit the demand of the market. What about accessories business that includes all kinds of merchandise with the Agusta label..you think that makes good business sense in the country? As mentioned earlier, MV Agusta targets the niche market where its customers would not appreciate riding the bikes with different label merchandise. MV Agusta merchandise has a charm of its own that maintains top quality and design keeping in mind safety of the rider. Hence we made it a point
to keep available all MV Agusta merchandise in our exclusive dealerships. Like many of your competitors do you think you too will promote an owners’ club in India? MV Agusta India shall certainly start a club/group shortly, which will not just be restricted to an owners club. We believe in developing the superbike culture that included organizing rides, training and sessions on riding a superbike with learning imparted on utmost care and safety. Training, safety and riding awareness and lessons are important to gain customer’s confidence. We plan to undertake such projects in order to support and boost the culture.
AYUSH LOHIA
CEO, Lohia Auto Industries Very briefly what has been the progress of electric two wheelers sales for your company? Are numbers picking up because of the odd subsidies that are being given, or is the market still heavily skewed towards products with IC engines? EV industry in India is still not doing well if we talk about its share in two-wheeler category. Last year the Central Government announced subsidies on electric vehicles under FAME scheme with a proper execution plan including infrastructure development, technology upgradation, pilot projects etc. Consumers awareness and benefit of electric vehicles are still not known and the government has to create charging Infrastructure to promote these vehicles. Your company has a manufacturing unit based out of Kashipur, Uttrakhand with capacity to produce 100000 units/Year of 2
Wheelers & 3 Wheelers. What are capacity utilisation levels at present and what is the ratio of scooter to 3-wheeler production? The combined manufacturing capacity of this plant is 1 lakh vehicle annually. Lohia has undertaken an investment of Rs 50 Crore in creating this facility and it intend to invest 10 crore in next 2 years. Till last year we hardly used 5% of total capacity but now we are geared up with new models of electric 2w, electric 3W and UM bikes, production of which has already started. Also now our focus is to increase its market penetration and create all India dealer network. We plan to have more than 150 dealerships in this financial year which will increase our revenue and help to utilise our production capacity at optimum level. In current scenario 60: 40 is the production ratio of 2w to 3w. What are the chances of bringing in electric motorcycles in the country?
64 | MOTOWN INDIA | SEPTEMBER 2016
Our R&D team is continuously working in developing new products and in pipeline are high speed electric scooters and bikes. These bikes will be futuristic with attractive looks and will be easy to maintain. Are you satisfied with the government efforts to popularise electric vehicles? Or are there are areas which still need to be looked into? Both central and state governments are encouraging Electric Vehicles and recognising that in future India need not depend on fossil fuel imports. We see a strong growth on the back of central government support in electric scooter business. By 2020, the central government plans to spend Rs 14,000 crore in developing the EV industry. Electric vehicles are almost 1.5 times the cost of gasoline vehicles and State government levies like VAT, RTO etc nullify the benefit of central government subsidy, Consumers awareness and benefit
of electric vehicles are still not known and the government has to create a charging infrastructure to promote these vehicles. You are doing assembly operations for UM Motorcycle through a JV with it? Have the assembly operations begun? Is it at the same site? What is the capacity of this plant? Yes, UM bikes are being rolled out from our Kashipur plant only. The production of UM bikes has already started with initial capacity of 20,000 units a year and Lohia Auto will take this capacity up to 40,000 units in next two years.

TWO-WHEELER SPECIAL
COVER REPORT
SOHINDER GILL
CEO, Hero Electric & Global Business, A2B How has the company’s business progressed in the last one year? Although we have 70% of the market share of the industry, the volume of sales are so low that it does not paint an encouraging picture. We expect to be out of the woods in a year and have focused on adopting a bottom-line approach of minimizing costs. We are still waiting for the economic ecosystem to turn better for the EV industry as a whole. In terms of the domestic market, our tieups with e-commerce platforms such as Snapdeal have had a positive impact on our sales; 25% of the total sales are today being generated from online platforms. We have also partnered with other players such as ShopClues, Homeshop18 and Rediff.com in a hope to leverage their huge customer base. The situation is different in our A2B segment. We have our vehicles designed in Germany and manufactured in China.
Business in foreign markets is not dependent on subsidies. In fact, our vehicles are much higher priced in these places and fall under the category of lifestyle products. Our products abroad enjoy a healthy consumer base amongst individuals aged 50 years and above, as these users are environmentally-conscious and strive to maintain a balanced and healthy perspective in all aspects of their life. In an encouraging shift, even youngsters are getting attracted to EVs which has resulted in increasing sales as well as greater product evolution to cater to their tastes and preferences. A two-wheeler without speed is not thrilling, at least for the younger generation. Are you looking at developing e-scooters and e-motorcycles that speed significantly and have longer lasting batteries? It is true that EVs are often viewed
with a skewed vision of being ‘boring’ cars with limited range, performance and higher cost of acquisition. Presently, however, efforts are being made to bring in a paradigm shift in the performance of EVs. For instance, lithium-ion batteries are replacing the conventional devices, thereby bringing EVs at par with top-performing IC vehicles. The presence of strong charging infrastructure becomes all the more essential if such vehicles are to be popularized and utilized to their optimum. The incentive for manufacturers to invest in developing such vehicles, however, will exist only if mass awareness is created to generate a point of inflection for the EV market. Infrastructural changes are long-term strategies that will take years to materialize. Till then, however, the government can intervene with policy frameworks
and innovative solutions to ensure the survival of EV manufacturers. For instance, the giant e-commerce delivery network is an untapped resource that can be utilized to provide a market for Electronic Vehicles. Entering into collaborations with online platforms to utilize electronic twowheelers for their deliveries might prove to be a social experiment that can be accepted easily, as these platforms mostly cater to the environmentally-conscious urban youth. With a little bit of nudge and lots of motivated efforts from the government as well as other stakeholders, there is still hope to inspire Indian consumers to turn the EV way.

Punjab is first state to implement automated driver license test tracks Report JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER & Photography: AFSAR BAIG In an age defined by technology, India is also slowly yet surely progressing towards modernisation of its systems and governance. Punjab has been a witness to such a wave of progress after the state implemented the country’s first Automated Driving License Test Track Centres in all its DTOs (District Transport Offices). These facilities located in 28 different locations throughout the state facilitate the issuing of new driver licenses and eliminate any human interference or corruption while testing the applicants driving capability. Smart Chip Pvt. Ltd. an end to end solutions provider has partnered with the government of Punjab to setup these automated test track facilities. The company initially ran a pilot automated test track last year in august and after receiving appropriate sanctions began operations of these tracks at different DTOs through the state from April 21, 2016 onwards. The government of Punjab has invested approximately Rs 45 crore in this project and has sanctioned 32 such centres. The company has further received approvals to begin a pilot program in Indore for a similar automated test track.
Previous studies conducted on the subject suggest that applicants ended up paying 2.5 times of the required fees to obtain a license through unauthorised means. Studies have also shown that around 60pc of license holders did not appear for the driving test. The practice of applying for licenses through commission agents is prevalent through the country however these automated test tracks eliminate the role of such commission

agents. S Darbara Singh, DTO (District Transport Officer), Hoshiarpur, said “Previously the DTO in Hoshiarpur issued more than 100 new driving licenses but after the implementation of the automated driving license test tracks an average of only 50 licenses are issued per day”. These Automated Driving Test Track Centres operate on the parameters of practical tests using HD cameras which track the applicant’s movement through the
track. For four wheelers applicants need to clear four separate tests which include a gradient test, parallel parking, 8 shape test and reverse S test. Applicants for a two wheeler license however have to clear only one double 8 test. The applicants must clear these tests in a stipulated time and without crossing marked lines more than two times. Upon clearing the test the applicant is issued the driving license within 30 minutes.

Infiniti VC-T: World’s first production-ready variable compression ratio engine Infiniti will present VC-T (Variable Compression-Turbocharged), the world’s first productionready variable compression ratio engine and one of the most advanced internal combustion engines ever created, on September 29 at the 2016 Paris Motor Show (Mondial de l’Automobile). More than 20 years in development, Infiniti’s new four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline VC-T engine represents a major breakthrough in internal-combustion powertrain technology. VC-T technology signifies a new chapter in the story of the internal combustion engine – engines are no longer limited by a fixed compression ratio. The ingenuity of VC-T engine technology lies in its ability to transform itself and seamlessly raise or lower the height the pistons reach. As a consequence, the displacement of the engine changes and the compression ratio can vary anywhere between 8:1 (for high performance) and 14:1 (for high efficiency). The sophisticated engine control logic automatically applies the optimum ratio, depending on what the driving situation demands. VC-T technology delivers multiple customer benefits including significantly reduced fuel consumption and emissions, greatly reduced noise and vibration levels; it is also lighter and more compact than comparable conventional engines.
