Jean-Claude Van Damme performs stunt for Volvo Trucks

The stunts from the Volvo Trucks stable continue to come in droves. In Volvo Trucks’ latest live test film ‘The Epic Split’, Hollywood action star JeanClaude Van Damme performs one of his world-famous splits between two Volvo FM trucks as they are driven in reverse. However, the incredible stunt – a world first – was only made possible by Volvo Dynamic Steering. In the film ‘The Epic Split’, it is Volvo Dynamic Steering that enables the two drivers in the trucks to maintain the exact same distance and speed while travelling in reverse. Jean-Claude Van Damme’s athleticism and the skill of the drivers are vital to the stunt’s success, but without Volvo Dynamic Steering the feat would not have been possible. Volvo Dynamic Steering - an innovative new system developed by Volvo Trucks

- greatly improves precision and stability in any driving situation. It works through an electronically controlled electric motor that is adjusted around 2,000 times per second to create highly precise steering. When driving in reverse, Volvo Dynamic Steering offers excellent control with minimal effort. “The film is the perfect
demonstration of the directional stability Volvo Dynamic Steering can offer,” explains Jan-Inge Svensson, the engineer behind the development of the system’s software at Volvo Trucks. “The stability and control are so good that you can reverse a truck over a long distance with very high precision, which is exactly what we’ve had to do in this film. It had to be perfect - right down to the last centimetre.” At low speeds, Volvo Dynamic Steering makes steering virtually effortless and improves maneuverability. The electric motor also automatically regulates the steering and compensates for irregularities that feed through to the steering wheel, such as side winds or bumps in the road surface. As a result, the need to constantly make small adjustments to the steering is greatly reduced. Furthermore, Volvo Dynamic Steering will also automatically MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT
INTERNATIONAL return the steering wheel to its starting position when released, further reducing strain on the driver. “The capabilities of the system not only help make a great film - they are also very practical for truck drivers,

especially in situations where a lot of steering input is needed,” adds Jan-Inge Svensson. “For example, reversing in tight areas or over rough terrain. When reversing with a trailer, small changes to the steering can make a big difference to
the vehicle’s direction and the effort required from the driver in an ordinary truck can be much higher. However, Volvo Dynamic Steering will help the driver maintain a straight line and provide far superior control of the truck.”

Jaguar F-Type V8S
T
Report: P. Tharyan, Photography: Mohd. Nasir he first thing you notice about the Jaguar F-Type when you get close to it is that it’s no ordinary looking car. It’s ecstasy wrapped around four wheels. The two-door, twoseater sports car looks every bit a delight from all angles. As I press the remote, the door handles of the two doors snap open, ready to be grabbed. I get in and gently push a button to start the engine. The sound from the powerful V8 engine sends a chill down my spine. The machine screams to life, as though 488 horses are tugging you to let go of them... I drive the car to a lonely stretch of road on the outskirts of Delhi. This one’s not meant for ordinary potholed roads of India. This needs its own tarmac. Maybe an oil rich sheikh would be able to do a lot more justice than a Richie Rich here in India. There are just no roads for this machine to truly scream its heart out. It’s like parading Priyanka Chopra in a bikini in the crowded bazaars of Delhi. All you get to see are salivating mouths all around. Some even come close to take selfies with the car. Imagine a nervous Priyanka..., imagine me! The Jaguar F-Type comes in two variants in India. The F-Type S comes with a 2,995cc engine while the F-Type V8S comes with a 5,000cc engine. Both are petrol fed and offer loads of power and torque to the driver. I am lucky to be driving the V8S. This one’s a pure blast from the word go. Being a sports car, the ground clearance is very low, hence a lot of precaution needs to be taken while going over speed breakers and uneven roads.

This model from Jaguar has been built to take on the legendary and iconic Porsche 911. It’s not going to be easy because a Porsche is a Porsche and the 911 is a car known for its unmatched superiority. Thus, it’s not fair to compare the two. I think the F-Type is much more than a sports car. It’s elegance, style and luxury, all mixed together in the right doses with a 32 / DECEMBER 2013
good helping of sportiness. With a large wheelbase and a front mounted engine, the F-Type is different in layout too when compared to the likes of the Ferrari and the Porsches. While the Italian marquee has a rear mounted engine, the Porsche we know so well has it in the centre. With a lightweight aluminum monocoque body shell, the car offers higher power to weight
and torque to weight ratios. The engine provides linear delivery of performance and instant access to high levels of torque at all engine speeds. The car looks appealing from the front with the large and stylish air vents at the corners that are a necessity when it comes to cooling the brake drums. The wraparound tail lamps are narrow and with the LEDs glowing, it’s a sight MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT
WHEELZ & ROADZ to see. The V8 S model I drove had four outboardmounted exhaust outlets, two on either side. From the rear, the car looked equally savvy. The Jaguar Active Differential’s sophisticated electronic management uses a system of sensors and full electronic control of the rear differential lock to provide F-Type V8 S with the ultimate in agility and control. The system helps maintain smooth power delivery by diverting torque to the appropriate wheel enabling the car to maintain precise control as well as increased stability and traction. The fabric roof can be raised or lowered in just 12 seconds and operated fully automatically at speeds of up to 50km/h. The interior layout of the car is simple. Unlike cars in its category, this one is not intimidating. The F-Type has just the right buttons and switches a driver really needs. The air conditioner vents pop up when the ignition is turned on. I must agree that the cabin is ‘drivercentric’ with excellent visibility and minimal distractions. The facia is as low as possible and free from clutter to increase the forward view, while the Intelligent Venting System hides the twin central air vents until they are required. Dials are simple, clear and analogue – an important facet for a sports car. DualMOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT
mode switches are incorporated into the automatic climate control dials with the display reconfiguring to reflect the appropriate function. During performance driving, manual control of the gear ratios is available via either the F-Type’s SportShift selector or the paddles mounted behind the steering wheel. Lightning fast sequential gear changes deliver an assertive sporting feel and are accompanied by a distinctive F-Type exhaust note. We drive the car for a while on a stretch almost devoid of traffic. The vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in around 4.3 seconds. While the engine screams, we enjoy the attention we get from passersby. We are
not intimidated. We are in a car that is remarkably fast and agile. As we leave the onlookers far behind, we realise that the F-Type is truly a blue blooded sports car and an elite performer.

ROYAL ENFIELD CONTINENTAL GT
Revival of the Rockers Report & Photography: Abhijeet Singh Rockers’ or the ‘ton up boys’ is a long forgotten motorcycling subculture which came into existence in Britain through the sixties. Gone are the days when men and women in black leather jackets, raced from one café to another café on custom built middle weight motorcycles, involving in skirmishes with Mods on the way just for fun. Those were the days when people used to spend long hours on their machines, sitting underneath the engine block getting their fingernails dirty with grease. The machines they required were no-nonsense as well, called Café Racers. The recipe for these was quiet basic and simple. The objective was to have a light-weight motorcycle which was tuned more for speed and handling than comfort, often imitating Grand Prix motorcycles of the time. Multiple brands made their cafe racing counterparts, but the motorcycle in question here is a resurrection of the 1967 Continental 250cc from Royal Enfield. 34 / DECEMBER 2013

Siddhartha Lal, MD & CEO, Eicher Motors Ltd, envisions bringing back the joys of classic motorcycling to the young generations who seem to be oblivious of what it is all about. The Royal Enfield Continental GT is what he has created to make his statement. One look at it and many an aged man would get misty eyed by its appearance. The Continental GT looks as classic as ink and quill. Cafe Racers are stripped out to their bare minimum for lightness and agility. The GT hardly has any body panels on it. The tank MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

is elongated so you tuck your knees at the sides. The handle bars are low to give that racy stance to the riders, but not so much that you break your back. The foot pegs have been pulled back as well. All in all the Continental GT looks every bit a genuine classic street racer. Royal Enfield invited us to Goa to experience this magnificent machine. For all the ‘bulleteers’ out there, the news flash is that it is not a Bullet in any which way possible. The only carryover is the underpinnings of that DECEMBER 2013 / 37

535cc Unit Construction Engine (UCE) from the Bullet stable. The 500cc UCE has a bigger piston stretching it to 35cc more capacity resulting in 29.1bhp of maximum power accompanied by 44Nm of peak torque. This might not sound much but is pretty impressive when you bring it on the tarmac. The throttle is responsive and you can gently play through the gears. This big is built for accessible fun. On maximum throttle you would just nudge the 130kmph mark, but it is the delivery till that mark where all the fun lies. The most attractive variable of riding the Continental GT is the exhaust note. The heavy thump and the crackle and bang on the overrun are just intoxicating. You will never ever get bored of it. The twisting 38 / DECEMBER 2013
turning roads of Goa gave us a taste of the handling prowess this motorcycle has. The ride and handling is nothing short of impressive. It is agile and negotiates high speed corners with ease. The superb handling is partly down to the twin downtube cradle frame. The chassis development was done by famed Harris Performance of Hertford, UK. The motorbike went through extensive testing and fine tuning by Steve Harris who happens to be a genius when it comes to chassis tuning. The engine gently delivers the power rather than catching you off-guard. Power is very accessible almost all of the time, and the delivery is very predictable. In a conversation with Siddhartha Lal, he stated that power is only good until you
can use it. He wanted to make a point that ridiculous power numbers are not useful when normal riding is concerned. Hence, the Continental GT has been tuned to be fun under the 120kmph mark, as over that is not practical on public roads. I stand by his statement and applaud his spirit, but the mad human I happen to be, would have liked tuning for a bit more top speed. However that is a personal statement and what the Continental GT offers is more than enough for most of the customers. MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

The rear suspension is Paioli twin gas charged shock absorbers and is setup on the harder side. This greatly supports sporty handling characteristics. Stopping power comes from Brembo, with a 300mm front disc and a 240mm rear disc. The final piece of the jigsaw is the Pirelli Sport Demon tyres, a 100mm up front and 1300mm at the rear. These high quality components show that Royal Enfield want to make no compromise on the performance of the Continental GT. Apart from the motorcycle, MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT
Royal Enfield as will sell a collection of cafe racing themed accessories which they are calling, ‘Burn-Up wear’. These classic styled collection leather jackets, gloves, helmets and shoes which will bring back memories of the analogue oldschool to our digital pretentious times. The only thing which makes me angry is why now, and why not earlier. Royal Enfield
took their own sweet time in developing and producing this fantastic machine, but in the immortal words of William Shakespeare, ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’. Or should I say , “...That begins Well..”? DECEMBER 2013 / 39

VOLKSWAGEN POLO GT TDI
Don’t mess with the GT Report: Abhijeet Singh, Photography: Mohd. Nasir
T
he difference between power and torque is simple. Power is an electrifying sensation moving up through the seat of your pants and to your fingertips. Torque is an unrelenting force pushing you back in the seat. You rev the nuts off a petrol engine to get to the sensational bit, while the diesels pull themselves from lazy idles without effort. Volkswagen gave us the lovely Polo GT TSI with a turbocharged petrol engine to play with. And now they have plonked the 1.6 litre diesel engine from the Vento TDI in the Polo to create the GT TDI. This is a recipe built for fun. The Polo GT TDI is the most expensive diesel hatchback in the country, and what makes this car so adorable is the thunderous lazy wave of torque this red paprika comes seasoned with. Looking at the GT does fool everybody that it is just regular Polo. There is no differentiation at all except for GT badges at the front and the rear. But when you see one in front of you, do not go poke it with a stick because it will chew you up. Volkswagen offers the GT TDI with 15 inch ‘Estrada’ alloy wheels which look stunning and perfectly match the appeal of the car. The entire car has been designed so proportionately that it looks just right from all the angles. The front face is sporty yet elegant,

the side shoulders are strong yet lean and the rear is modern yet sedate. The halogen headlights come with black finish and lend an angry rakish look. The

favourite bit is that the entire car is so understated and has no shiny glitzy trinkets on it ruining its serious appeal. It is a German hatchback and it looks the part.
Open the door and you are greeted with GT badges on the front door sills. Volkswagen has given the GT TDI fabric upholstery called Superior ‘Milan’ Titanschwarz which is quiet butch and of high quality. The interior quality is just fantastic. Everything is very well put together and built to last. In fact no other car can match the fit and finish levels offered by the little Volkswagen. The steering, gearshift knob and handbrake lever handle come wrapped in high quality leather to lend that classy feel. Climate control comes as standard and also a two din music system with 4 speakers which we have to say performs very well. MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

The steering wheel is perfectly sized and weighed for comfort as well as sporty handling. Parking manoeuvres and three-point turns are extremely easy. The trip computer delivers vital information to the driver, and you can choose between range, instantaneous fuel efficiency, speed, etc by tapping a switch on the right wiper stock. People may come around and argue that the entire car looks the same inside out as all the other cars in the Volkswagen but frankly do not give a blind eye to their comments. Volkswagens look the same as they nearly the best in their segments. Not many manufacturers can match their quality and technology as of yet. Coming back to what makes this car so good, the engine. A 250Nm turbocharged diesel engine is more Thor’s hammer than the 1.2 TSI’s thunderbolt. Step on the accelerator in any gear and brace yourself for a MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

moment as the turbo spools up, and then blast away. The acceleration is relentless and continues rising till you reach 160-170kmph. After these speeds the top speed numbers depend on wind and elevation gradients. But frankly you need not question the numbers here. With the GT TDI it is all about the delivery. The engine feels powerful on open highways and yet friendly in traffic. Another important character of a hot hatchback is its handling. And what better way to test the handling than sneaking a few laps around the Buddh MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT
International Circuit. Overall the GT TDI handles quite well on a racetrack. The 5-speed manual gearbox is a treat to work with. Gently enter a fast corner and exit out at full chat. Front-wheel cars have a usual property of understeering, as you are asking the front wheels to do the propulsion and steering at the same time. The GT TDI does that as well, but it does it way past most average driver’s talent runs out. And you have to remember that it is a sub-9 lakh hatchback at that. Being an everyday vehicle the GT TDI is a treat throughout the day, from
the morning commute, the way back home in the evening, to the weekend highway blast. The GT TDI is a charming little car. It performs very well for what it is, and yet will go around 13km to a litre of fuel when thrashed around a racetrack (expect 18kmpl under normal driving conditions). The only shortcomings in this little scamper is lack of cabin space and come with a small boot. It will not see sales in many numbers for Volkswagen India, and will be bought by young hearts with enthusiasm still brewing in them. DECEMBER 2013 / 45

ndia is an agricultural nation. No matter how modern and cosmopolitan people around you might look, most of us have our roots attached back in fields and mud. All our festivals usually celebrate a happy harvest. Recent years have shown the scale of attention shift towards the service industry, but the fact of the matter is more than 70pc of Indians live in villages. Farming is the most widespread occupation in the country. A farmer’s best friend is his tractor. Right from tearing up the soil, to sowing the seeds, to transporting goods and even driving around the countryside is a tractor’s duty. However, when everything around is going faster and more technically proficient, farming equipment used to take the backseat in these terms until recent years. Driving and working with a tractor was not for anybody. In fact it did require
MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT
DECEMBER 2013 / 47
WHEELZ & ROADZ physical strength and expertise to operate one. Tractors around the world have become so advanced, big and intimidating that you might mistake one for a tank. Our tractors looked like goats in front them really. Mahindra has decided to step in and bring the learning’s from lands afar lands for our farmers. You see us in the middle of one of the biggest farming hubs in the country, Punjab. Arriving at the outskirts of the city of Ludhiana we realised the entire place is tractor central. There were millions of tractors driving all around us. The gentleman from Mahindra told us that people do all sorts of stuff on tractors here. Apart from being used for farming, harvesting, transporting goods and carrying people around, some of them also do up their tractors with alloy wheels and upmarket stereo systems also. Tractors owners tend to get more attached to their machines. Tractors are not just metal components bolted down together, but it is a way of life for farmers. The tractor we are here for is the Mahindra 8085. First look at it and you know it is very special. The 8085 is a fairly large machine against the usual crop of tractors. Now everybody realises that operating a tractor
48 / DECEMBER 2013
implies sitting in the heat of the sun roasting away while working. Considering this fact, the 8085 has an air conditioned compartment for the operator. Sitting on an air cushioned seat, a farmer can spend long hours working on his field in comfort. Another feature which will take a load off an operator is the power steering. The turn in is effortless and the steering is tilt adjustable. The 8085 comes with two separate clutches and an independent Power Take-Off (PTO). The independent PTO is becoming very essential now as the operators want to control the wheel motion and the implement separately. Then is the Automatic Depth/Draft control feature used mostly while operating soil engaging implements like ploughs, tillers and mounted harrows. Apart from cooling the cabin, the air conditioner can also heat the cabin for ease in the cold winters. The surprise is that everything is easy to operate. As a matter of fact it almost drives like a normal car. Even a plebeian like me was able to drive it around the farm with ease and had a lot of fun at that. There are 5 forward gears with 3 intensities, which would result in 15 forward gears. Then flick the left indicator stalk to shift into reverse. The 3.3 litre engine develops 85 HP of power
which is more than enough for the farming requirements in India. Farms in Punjab are large in sizes as compared to the rest of the country. Hence smaller HP tractors are not successful here. Farmers usually prefer 40-45 HP tractors for their larger sized land. The 8085 sort of becomes the super car of tractors here. The owner of this one is a former ‘Sarpanch’ of the village and bought the first Mahindra 8085 tractor. The delivery of the machine was more an occasion for this household. Then is the after sales comfort that Mahindra provides to its customers. A team from Mahindra regularly visits to get a status of their machine. They get valuable feedback regarding new ideas and features that farmers provide from their learning. Retailing at nearly 18 lakh, the 8085 is an expensive proposition. But then you do have to pay for exclusivity and technology. Mahindra has already sold 9 units of the 8085 and more inquiries are coming in. Welcome then to the world of luxury farming!

eople carriers have specific roles in India. They enter your life, carry you and your stuff around, and then one day exit without any strings attached. The template for creating them was quiet simple, a box on wheels. But that does not mean that these hard workers can’t get a veneer of style on them. Here is where this new guy steps in. After setting a firm foot in the UV segment with their light, medium and
MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT
heavy vehicles, Ashok Leyland has decided to further expand its stronghold by entering the passenger vehicle space. The spearhead that they will use is the recently launched Ashok Leyland Stile. Stile is basically an MPV which in honest definition implies utilitarian design coupled with space and efficiency. The idea is that larger families need bigger vehicles to travel, which need to have space to carry luggage and accommodate more people. Atop this running costs need
to be low and with higher fuel efficiency. Now considering there are not many options you have if you want something like that, the Stile fits the bill very comfortably. Based on the same NV200 platform that the Nissan Evalia is based on, Ashok Leyland has done a lot to distinguish it from its twin brother. However looks are not the priority here, they are just an added advantage, which you do get. It may not look as premium as the Evalia, but then it costs less than the Nissan. Step inside and you get lots and lots of room everywhere. For ease of entry the floor sits low and the doors are sliding. One annoyance is that the driver cannot operate the passenger power window from his side. The engine powering the Stile is a de-tuned version of the same diesel unit powering the Evalia. The 1.5 litre diesel engine puts out 75bhp of maximum power and 185Nm of peak torque. The overall drivability is satisfying. The Stile picks up and runs around with ease, and does not actually feel very huge while driving. Everything from the steering to the pedals is light and will make long drives less tiring. The biggest advantage one gets is an ARAI certified fuel efficiency figure of 19.50kmpl. This is a significant number for a vehicle of this size. The Ashok Leyland Stile is a reasonable package as a whole. It drives fairly well and has ample space for 7/8 people to complete long journeys in comfort. At a price tag of 7.49lakh it does make a justifiable buy as a big comfortable people carrier. DECEMBER 2013 / 51
