MINI festival at Dakar Rally 2014
T
he toughest Dakar held in South America, with just 204 vehicles (78 motorcycles, 15 quads, 61 cars and 50 trucks, or 47pc of those that started) making it to the finish, was dyed in the red and yellow colours of Catalonia. Catalonia is an autonomous community of Spain. With Marc Coma and Jordi Viladoms taking the top two places in the motorcycle category and Nani Roma winning in a car race ten years to the day after doing so on a motorcycle, the Catalan contingent blew the competition away in the 2014 edition. Behind the two KTM riders, Frenchman Olivier Pain rounded off the podium after fending off the late attacks of his leader, Cyril Despres. In the car category, Nani Roma topped the Mini 1-2-3 with a narrow 5′38″ margin over Peterhansel, becoming the third competitor to win in a car after triumphing on a motorcycle. At the end, almost as expected, it was a Mini festival, with five of its eleven cars in the top 6, including a podium whitewash, and all eleven cars making it to Valparaíso. The 2014 Dakar Rally was one of the toughest of all time. The 9,374 km-long route led from Rosario (AR) across the Andes and the challenging Atacama desert to Valparaíso (CL) at the Pacific coast. The 22 / February 2014
drivers had to face a lot of different weather conditions and soils. Gravel in the Andes and a lot of extremely fine sand in the hot Atacama desert. MINI mastered all the challenges and won 11 of the 13 stages. It was the third win in a row since MINI made its debut at the Dakar Rally in 2011. Twenty six years old Ignacio Casale also put his name on the prestigious list of winners, as the young quad rider took a home win that will surely earn him a thunderous ovation on the podium in Valparaíso. In the truck category, Russian Andrey Karginov held on to his lead over Gerard de Rooy by a hair’s breadth. The clash of titans between Iveco and Kamaz will have been a close one until the very end. Although the Russian team seized the overall lead from the get-go with Ayrat Mardeev and was still in the pole
position with Andrey Karginov twelve stages later as the race came Valparaíso, the outcome of the 36th Dakar was full of suspense, reminiscent of some of the memorable battles seen in the motorcycle and quad categories over the last few years. Last year leader Cyril Despres and his lieutenant Ruben Faria signed an amazing one-two

motorsport
for the KTM squad. It was with the same team spirit that Marc Coma grabbed his fourth overall win, escorted on the podium by his faithful lieutenant Jordi Viladoms, who had already stood at his side when he won in 2006 in 2009. Coma’s strategy, based on building an insurmountable lead over his rivals in one single special, has changed little since his last victory in 2011. This time round, it was during the fourth day of racing, the second part of the marathon stage to Chilecito, that the comeback kid dealt a devastating blow by toppling Joan Barreda from the lead, while electronic problems scuttled Cyril Despres’ chances of victory. From then on, Coma
focused on avoiding mistakes, while his rivals suffered more and more mishaps, mechanicals and errors… costing them hours in the overall. The first two riders to drop out were those who stood next to Despres on last year’s podium, Ruben Faria and “Chaleco” López, who were knocked out by falls. Later on, during stage 5, world champion Paolo Gonçalves saw both his Honda and his hopes go up in flames. At the time, a breath of fresh air from the Sherco camp compensated for all these disappointments. After alternating with teammate Juan Pedrero in the top places of the stages, Alain Duclos looked more and more like a serious podium
contender, at least until the rest day. However, his Sherco’s engine gave in during stage 9 after a first scare two days earlier. Marc Coma was able to spend the last few days riding at his own pace and keeping an eye on distant pursuer Joan Barreda. However, after climbing back to within half an hour of Coma due to the leader being handed down a penalty for an engine change, Barreda blew it exactly when it looked like he had finally learned to be consistent. The animator of this year’s edition and winner of five stages crumbled on the dunes of Copiapó the day before the finish, conceding over two hours and slipping to seventh overall.

The Tata Nano, Ford Figo, Hyundai i10 and Volkswagen Polo also underwent the safety assessment. Combined sales of these five cars account for around 20pc of all the new cars sold in India last year. Global NCAP chose the entry-level version of each model and as a result none were fitted with airbags as standard. The results highlight major differences in the structural integrity of the vehicles tested. Global NCAP is an independent charity registered in the United Kingdom. It serves as a global platform for NCAPs around the world to exchange best practice in consumer orientated vehicle safety initiatives. Global NCAP receives financial support from the FIA Foundation, from International Consumer Testing and Research, from the Road Safety Fund and the World Bank Global Road Safety Facility. Global NCAP supports the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety and is a member of the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration. There are currently nine NCAP programmes or similar active across the world Max Mosley, Chairman of Global NCAP, said: “India is now a major global market and production centre for small cars, so it’s worrying to see levels of safety that are 20 years behind the five-star standards now common in Europe and North America. Poor structural integrity and the absence of airbags are putting the lives of Indian consumers at 30 / February 2014
risk. They have a right to know how safe their vehicles are and to expect the same basic levels of safety as standard as customers in other part of the world.” In the Suzuki-Maruti Alto 800, the Tata Nano and the Hyundai i10, the vehicle structures proved inadequate and collapsed to varying degrees, resulting in high risks of lifethreatening injuries to the occupants. The extent of the structural weaknesses in these models were such that fitting airbags would not be effective in reducing the risk of serious injury. The Ford Figo and Volkswagen Polo had structures that remained stable – and, therefore, with airbags fitted, protection for the driver and front passenger would be much improved. Coinciding with the Global NCAP tests, Volkswagen has decided to withdraw the non-airbag version Motown India Supplement
cover Report of the Polo from sale in India. Because of this, Global NCAP agreed to a request from VW to assess a version of the Polo that has two airbags fitted as standard as from now. Other manufacturers had the same opportunity. The protection proved much better and this airbag-equipped model received a four-star rating for adult occupant protection. Consumers are encouraged to check which version of the Polo they buy.
Models also fail to pass UN’s basic safety test Global NCAP also assessed the same models against the UN’s basic crash test. This 40pc offset frontal impact test at 56km/h is now widely applied by major manufacturing countries and regions, Hyundai i10

benefit enormously from the introduction of minimum crash safety standards and clearer information for consumers about the protection new cars offer. Many cars made in India for export meet these standards already, so it’s not a question of know-how or capability: India’s automobile industry just needs

the right incentives. With the UN’s minimum safety standards and clear information for consumers, India can produce cars that are every bit as good as those in Europe and the US.” Global NCAP has awarded a separate child safety rating to each car in order to highlight the different levels of protection vehicles provide to passengers on the rear seats. Because the only safe way for young children to travel is properly restrained in a child seat, the assessment checks how compatible the car is with the child seats recommended by the manufacturer, as well as the protection provided in the crash. In the assessments, the child seats recommended by manufacturers were often found to be incompatible with their vehicle’s belt system. In the Tata Nano, there was no three-point seatbelt on the rear seats and no way to install a child seat or
Taken together the results highlight the vital combination of both sound structural integrity and airbags as standard equipment. These features are the sure way to exceed the minimum UN crash test standard at 56km/h. They also offer adequate levels of protection in a higher speed crash at 64km/h, the speed most commonly used by independent consumer crash test programmes. Rohit Baluja, President of India’s Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) said: “These results show that India would 32 / February 2014
transport a small child safely. “Vehicle manufacturers understand how important it is for young children to travel buckled up in a child seat that’s installed securely on the rear seat,” said David Ward, Secretary-General of Global NCAP. “They know what they need to do to make it as easy as possible for parents: it’s just a question of priorities. Indian families buying these cars expect their children to be given the same protection as children in other parts of the world.” Motown India Supplement

s cars get smaller, you wonder what makes them different from competition. Any new car that comes has a different styling, changes in the interior, better seat fabrics, decent quality plastics etc. Celerio seems to have been evolved with a purpose in mind. The engine has an Auto Gear Shift to nudge it along. In simple terms you have an automatic Celerio, apart from one with a manual transmission. The high point of this product is the Auto Gear Shift or its automatic manual transmission. When I say this car was made with a purpose, I mean that the company is trying to revolutionise the auto transmission space with this small car. Christened EZ Drive, this Auto Gear Shift is definitely revolutionary in nature. It has the flexibility of both manual mode as well as ‘Drive mode’. No, there is no clutch pedal and everything you want from an automatic vehicle you have it in this small compact car, albeit without any of these expensive hassles. Yes, first and foremost this automatic car gives you 23.1kmpl. That’s awesome by today’s standards for a petrol car. As for the technology, it’s a smart bit of Maruti Suzuki engineering. The boys at Maruti have learnt the art of

frugal engineering and seem to have mastered it without compromising on performance. With a whole lot of sensors thrown in, each of them further passing on the job to the actuators, the entire mechanism makes it easy for the engine to move. In fact, powered by this intelligent actuating unit, driving is effortless with Auto Gear Shift. It actually functions like a smart driver and takes important decisions on behalf of the driver. Even in the manual mode, it disciplines you in your driving habits.

Coming back to the purpose of this car, it is meant to introduce an entire generation of Indians to automatic driving. Like in the good old days when a man bought a Maruti 800, became an expert in driving and then moved on to bigger cars, the Celerio too is expected to train them to
get used to clutch-less driving and then perhaps move on to the different technologies of automatic transmissions. While the driving is made

easy with this automatic manual transmission, the men and women at Maruti have also worked hard on the suspension. It is rock solid and even when it goes over shattered roads, the bump is minimal. The small compact Celerio has a refreshing look about it. The front has a bold look while the sides carry elegant lines of aerodynamic nature. The interiors are expansive with a distinct dashboard design. Roominess for all four or five passengers is adequate. The Celerio also comes with features

like alloy wheels, blue tooth connectivity, lane changing indication and anti-theft alarm. One can also customise central locking settings and door

hen you look at a bike the size of an Indian Chief Classic you remember everything your mother told you when you were a little boy. “Eat your food on time”, “Eat healthy food and become strong”... Unless you are fit and strong, you can kiss your ride goodbye, because it’s humanly impossible to have fun riding this 1811 cc V twin Thunderstroke engine cruiser on the Indian roads without a fair amount of sinewy muscles. And whoever writes and tells you that turning the bike at corners and ‘U’ bends is an easy thing, well the person has genes of a Superman or a Hercules! Strong and sturdy will only make the bike a lot more compatible to you. One thing is for sure, Harley Davidson finally has a good set of wheels to challenge its supremacy. The entry level Indian motorcycle-the Indian Chief Classic bike is so balanced and symmetrical that it even has a dummy petrol tank lid to make it precise in every way. The bike I rode had the traditional red paint and had loads of chrome all around it. On the looks front, it scores 10 out of 10. The massive headlamp with two additional lamps, along with the Indian hood ornament(the motif has a light too) that sits on the front mud guard, gives the bike an

aggressive look. The bike comes with a key that is in the shape of a small dish and all you have to do is to put it in your pocket and bring alive the engine with a push of a button. The engine delivers a massive 139Nm of torque at a low rpm of 2600. As the massive machine starts moving, you realise that the bike is fairly easy to control. Typically, like all bikers swear on, “you have got to talk to your bike”. Yes, that’s sacrosanct. You better

talk to this Indian if you want it to be your pal for life. Since Indian roads come in all shapes, sizes and ditches, be careful while manoeuvring the bike, especially at corners. The leather seats with metal studs to enhance its appeal are so comfortable and ergonomically designed that you simply sink into them while cruising at high speeds.
As you move up on the sixspeed gear, there is lot of road that the Indian covers. But higher the speed, the more difficult it is to stay on the seat without a front windshield. I wish that was a standard fitment on the

motorcycle. But yes, the Indian comes with a great horn. It is unmistakably Indian, I mean us. It is loud and can scare a monster away! Though the Indian comes with a beautifully crafted, air-cooled and fuel-injected, V-twin engine, it is to be seen how this machine will treat you when the Indian summer comes back with a vengeance. The bike has loads of great features:

verybody will admit that scooters are the most utilitarian and convenient mode of urban transport. Just saddle up, twist and off you go. On a regular everyday run, you forget about performance figures and precise handling. All you need is a comfortable ride and space to carry your stuff around. TVS Motor Company has introduced Jupiter, another addition to their range of fun machines. This new automatic scooter gets added style, power and space. Jupiter is a smart looking scooter. It has a sharper and masculine appeal as it is positioned across all age brackets for both male and female members of the society. Such a versatile audience means style, sportiness and ruggedness all wrapped in one package. The design of the scooter

is modern with clean sharp edges. The clear headlamps give good illumination and spread. Instrument cluster is compact and legible. It displays the speedometer, fuel gauge, low fuel warning and an indicator for economy and power mode. The plastic quality used on the switchgear is made up of decent quality. A handy feature is the passlight switch which helps a lot through overtaking manoeuvres. The foot-board has enough space for even mammoth sized feet. There is a hook for hanging your groceries below the rider seat and also below the handlebars. These can be neatly tucked away when not being used thus avoiding the chance of getting bruised on them. Even the underseat storage compartment is big and will hold a standard helmet in it. Another convenience is the lockable fuel-filler cap which sits just

above the tail-light cluster. Insert the key in the slot and turn it to one side to open the fuel-filler, or the other direction for the seat. Jupiter is powered by the same 109.7cc engine that powers the Wego. TVS claims that power generation of 7.8bhp and 8Nm of peak torque is good for a 0 to 60kmph time of 7.2seconds. Power is delivered to the wheels via a smooth shifting continuously variable transmission (CVT). The delivery has been tuned for city commuting and is strong in the low and mid-rpm range. The top speed we achieved on our ride was an indicated 85kmph and that too with a pillion on board. The ride quality on the Jupiter
Motown India Supplement
is very good. It gobbles uneven surfaces with ease and irons out bumps in the road surface giving a comfortable ride. The handling through corners is nimble as well. Of course it is not a performance motorcycle, but for what it is, it is brilliant. This is due to the fact that it uses telescopic fork suspension up-front and gas charged shocks at the rear. The advantage that Jupiter has is the price tag it holds. At Rs 46,534 (ex showroom Delhi), the Jupiter gives a lot more than what the others have to offer in that bracket. And then the fantastic fuel efficiency figure of 45kmpl that adds another reason to be attracted towards the TVS Jupiter.
