ear wheel drive cars are more fun then front wheel drive cars, fact! Yes there are all wheel drive cars which give you loads of grip and ludicrous lap times, but we are talking solely about the pleasures of driving. But the trouble with rear wheel drive cars is that they are complicated and expensive to build. However BMW seems to have cut the mustard with their new 1 Series which is the only

rear wheel drive hatchback you can buy in the country. We spend a day with this new yardstick for fun and get completely sold on it. EXTERIOR The looks of the 1 series are a bit confusing. Its not that it lacks appeal, it does have presence, but lacks premium ness which customers tend to demand in this price bracket. The front is
dominated by the signature BMW kidney grille which is finished in high gloss black for that sporty feel. The long stretching bonnet reminds one of its conventional approaches to car design. The sharp shoulder lines are accompanied by slightly flared wheel arches and star designed light-weight alloys displaying strength and agility. The rear is simple and functional, some might even say reminiscent of VW Polo, but we are not WHEELZ complaining because it looks

Step inside the 1 series and you are greeted with German common sense. Everything you touch and feel exudes quality and robustness. The layout is ergonomically perfect. All buttons where they are supposed to be, in the driver’s comfortable reach. The colour coding is a bit boring, black all around with brushed metal, but frankly no body will be complaining.Report: P.Tharyan, Photography: Mohd. The moment you set your eyes on the Grand i10, you realise this is much different from the original i10, be it in looks, size or styling. Though we tried our hands on the diesel car for a brief moment, we were not too impressed by its acceleration, the turbo played spoil sport. EXTERIOR With the Grand, the South Korean has really exploited their ‘Fluidic Design’ theme. Just when we thought that the i10 epitomised the best of

The problem it faced was that it was priced above the Rs20 lakh bracket and lacked visibility. elgium, Italy, Singapore and now South Korea, It has now been four straight wins for Sebastian Vettel of Infiniti Red Bull Renault as he claimed the F1 crown at the 2013 Korean Grand Prix in Yeongam, South Korea on October 6, 2013. The Formula One race was filled with all kinds of incidents which even saw Mark Webber of Infiniti Red Bull Renault losing his car to a fire after it was struck by Sahara Force India Adrian Sutil’s MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT
car. But it was a podium dominance for the Renault company as Kimi Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean of LotusRenault came second and third respectively. It was Grosjean who had initially led on the opening lap after going ahead of Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, but then Raikkonen later took the lead over his team mate. The 31st lap saw Sergio Perez’s McLaren car shred some tread off his Pirelli tyre. The safety car
came in and soon the debris was cleared. Around the 37th lap saw Mark Webber taking an extra stop because of a puncture. Immediately thereafter Adrian Sutil spun at Turn 3, striking Webber’s car, which caught fire and as the fire spread, the safety car was deployed again on the 38th lap. Confusion prevailed for some time as at that time. The fourth position was a well fought battle among several drivers that included Nico Hulkenberg of Sauber Ferrari, OCTOBER 2013 / 3

Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and Nico Rosberg of Mercedes. Eventually it was Hulkenberg who slotted fourth. He frustrated Hamilton’s every move to take a fourth place. Alonso settle for a sixth place which makes his title hopes ever slimmer. The result brought Red Bull within seven points of their fourth consecutive constructors’ crown. Red Bull have 402 points, Ferrari 284 and Mercedes 283, while Lotus are on 239, McLaren 81 and Force India 62. Vettel extended his championship lead over Alonso to 77 points and now has on a total of 272. Lotus F1 Team scored its third double podium of the season as Kimi Räikkönen took second and Romain Grosjean third in an emphatic team performance MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT
at the Korean Grand Prix. Both drivers benefited from strong race pace and drove superbly – including dicing with each other – during a race which saw two safety car periods. Kimi returns to third place in the Drivers’ Championship on 167 points – displacing Lewis Hamilton – and now lies 28 points behind Fernando Alonso in second. Romain Grosjean
remains eighth in the standings on 72 points, 17 away from Felipe Massa in seventh. The team maintains fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship on 239 points from Mercedes’ 283. The teams now fly to Japan before they land in India to race at the Buddh International Circuit. announced by Formula One management. Vettel’s win gives him a mathematical chance to seal championship in Japan. Meanwhile, it was good news for the Renault-powered drivers as they locked out the podium in the Korean Grand Prix. The
perfect podium result is the third time after Bahrain and Germany this season that the podium has been 100pc Renault-powered. Said Rémi Taffin, , Renault Sport F1 head of track operations, “A great result for Renault overall, but individually
very important results for our partner teams, Infiniti Red Bull Racing and Lotus F1 Team. We are really pleased and proud to contribute to their results. A triple podium at this stage in the season – and at this stage in the life of the V8 – is a great fillip for

this race is the bad luck for Mark. It is unclear whether we can use the engine again. On first glance there appears to be a lot of damage from the fire – this really is inexcusable as the fire should have been put out promptly. But I’m sure there will be several
enquiries as a result. However we have enough flexibility to be able to play around with the engines if we need to. It’s a short gap to Japan now and we’ll look at everything closely and see where we are there”.

Competing in the series, exclusive for Indian U-20 drivers, Arjun started from second position on the grid but overtook pole sitter Mahavir in lap 4 to take the lead, which he defended well till the end to win the 10-lap race. Mahavir later conceded his second position to Vishnu in lap 7 and despite finishing third he ended up in eighth position after being handed a five-place penalty for jump-start. As a result Karminder Singh was promoted to podium, which was his first of the season. In the second race of the JK Racing India Series, championship leader, Vishnu Prasad, took a hard earned victory over the winner of the first race, Arjun Maini by a mere 1.3 seconds. Mahaveer Rangunathan, who was penalised 30 seconds in the first race for making a jump start, made good by claiming third position a further 6.8 seconds adrift of the race winner. But in Race 3, Prasad made a great start and jumped leader Maini by the end of the first lap, opening up the lead. Behind him Chittesh Mandody, who started sixth, managed to slot into third. In the FLGB Formula 4, Hataria proved to be peerless. The Dark Don Racing driver from Coimbatore, who is leading the championship with 106 points, claimed the first golden three of the weekend. In the second race, which ran after a sharp spell of shower left the track in wet condition, the Coimbatore driver delved deep into experience to provide a masterclass of driving in slippery condition. Despite spinning and losing the track position, Hataria,
clawed back into lead by the time the chequered flag was shown. Ameya Bafna, who was in second place till the penultimate lap spun at the last corner in front of the main straight, lost a position to Advait Deodhar but still had enough lead over the rest of the field to claim a third place finish. In the third race, Hataria won again with Bafna and Kartik Shankar completing the top three. fter gaining success in the commercial vehicle segment, Force Motors started their personal vehicles initiative with the Force One SUV in 2011. We tested the vehicle and were quiet impressed as it was a first attempt by the company and it did hit the right spot in terms of space, size, ride and price. We agree there were a few niggles… and frankly which first attempts don’t? The company has further ironed out the creases and added 4X4 ability to their creation and are about to flow it in the market for people to buy. We spent a day with this SUV at Force Motor’s test track in Pune to see what’s new. EXTERIOR The Force One was already a handsome looking brute, and adding further design
decals and 4X4 badges adds to the rugged look. There are no prominent differences you would notice between the old version and the new one. The Force One has massive presence on the road. It is big, looks very strong and commands respect. You get Daytime Running Lights which stay on as soon as the ignition is turned off and switch off when the headlamps are turned on. The big wheel arches contain the 16inch fivespoke alloy wheels with purposeful looking high profile all terrain tyres. The third row window gets another 4X4 decal with grey surround stretching to the roof which looks very good actually. At the rear the tailgate does not carry the spare tyre, instead it is neatly tucked away underneath the body at the rear to keep the design a bit elegant. INTERIOR Climb into the cabin

duty in here by playing your favourite tunes through USB, AUX or Bluetooth. Force has worked on the interior trim quality and the fit and finish, and is decent enough, but still more work needs to be done in this area to come up to levels of what the rivals have to offer. Seats are comfortable and supportive. We were amazed by the amount of space inside the cabin. There is ample space for three adults in the second row and two not-tootall adults in the third. All three
rows of seats get their own air conditioning vents for comfort. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Under the bonnet rests a 4 cylinder turbocharged diesel engine sourced from Daimler AG Germany, which displaces 2198cc and churns out 139 bhp of maximum power and 321Nm torque between 1600-2400rpm. The performance on the road is decent for everyday use and the Force One touches 160kmph of MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

top speed. The addition of 4X4 hardware adds weight to this already heavy SUV, and it does take its toll on the handling. The suspension gets tuning from Lotus UK boffins. But you have to keep in mind that it is still a big heavy SUV and you have to grant it the slight body roll it has through the corners when you push hard. But under normal driving conditions it is very stable indeed. The steering communicates each and every intention of the vehicle so that MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT
you may quickly correct errors. The ride quality made us very happy indeed. It stays planted and stable at normal highway speeds and ABS with EBD equipped in our test car made sure one brakes confidently and safely. It is the rough off-road environment where this vehicle shows all its guts. Select 4H or 4L by twisting the mode selection knob near the hand brake lever and off you go. This car can deal with really rough stuff and multiple terrains.
We really appreciate this vehicle. It is understated and does what you ask it to do without boasting about it. The Force One works both on road, and off it. And then it would return you 13km for litre of diesel. Most people buying in this category avoid experimenting, and that is where they are going wrong. Consider this, if Christopher Columbus had just given up and stayed back in Italy, he would have got lost in the pages of time! OCTOBER 2013 / 21

Its not that it lacks appeal, it does have presence, but lacks premium ness which customers tend to demand in this price bracket. The front is dominated by the signature
BMW kidney grille which is finished in high gloss black for that sporty feel. The long stretching bonnet reminds one of its conventional approaches to car design. The sharp shoulder lines are accompanied by slightly flared wheel arches and star designed light-weight alloys displaying strength and agility. The rear is simple and functional, some might even say reminiscent of VW Polo, but we are not complaining because it looks good. INTERIOR Step inside the 1 series and you are greeted with German common sense. Everything you touch and feel exudes quality and robustness. The layout is ergonomically perfect. All buttons where they are supposed to be, in the driver’s comfortable reach. The colour coding is a bit boring, black all around with brushed metal, but frankly no body will be complaining. However the red inserts on the dash and the steering stitching, though still understated, look fantastic. The steering itself is a treat, well weighed and sized for driving comfort. The front seats are fully adjustable electrically and provide infinite setting for anybody to settle into. Thigh support though is manual. The only low blow is the rear cabin which is cramped against all its competitors. The equipment levels fall short if you opt for any version below the top, like the absence of Bluetooth/USB connectivity or a decent audio system, which is disappointing but granted because of the driving experience.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Our test vehicle came equipped with the 2.0 litre turbo diesel coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The engine is reasonably refined and barely audible at cruising speeds. It is only when you bury your right foot in the carpet that you hear it growling. The gearbox is silky smooth in Comfort setting, and gets very responsive when you put it in Sport or Sport+ mode. There is another ECO
PRO mode for efficient driving which encourages you to drive with a light foot for conservation of fuel. The 118d accelerates from standstill to 100kmph in 8.6seconds and the acceleration ends at 212kmph. Not bad for a car that claims a fuel efficiency figure of 20.58kmpl. The fuel efficiency observed by us was about 18kmpl under mixed driving conditions without the use of ECO PRO at all. The handling is sublime and is sure to put a smile on your
face. The earlier 1 series was a wholly handler but the new one absolutely trumps the competition. This is where the advantages of rear wheel drive shine in. The baby bimmer stays planted and allows you to have fun. Your talent would run out way before the 1 series would let go. More experienced drivers may put it to Sport+ and laugh away through the tail sliding action. You cannot do this in any other hatchback in the country. The 1 series is the undisputed

hat I like about Hyundai as a company is that they are honest about things. When they spruce up an i10 they call it the Grand i10, because it is much grander and smarter. Thankfully they don’t call it some silly
exaggerated name like Stingray or Thornbird or some such rubbish. The moment you set your eyes on the Grand i10, you realise this is much different from the original i10, be it in looks, size or styling. The Grand i10 is available in two engine options—the 1.1 litre advanced 2nd generation U2CRDi diesel and 1.2 litre Kappa Dual VTVT

Though we tried our hands on the diesel car for a brief moment, we were not too impressed by its acceleration, the turbo played spoil sport. EXTERIOR With the Grand, the South Korean has really exploited their ‘Fluidic Design’ theme. Just when we thought that the i10 epitomised the best of

premium sedan to shame. The fit and finish are top notch. The Grand offers generous cabin space and a surprisingly large boot space. The two tone beige and black interior gives premium and luxury touch to the interiors. Since space is a priority in India, the Grand to be sold in India is longer and has a larger wheel base compared to its European version. As a first in its segment, there are rear AC vents too. Features like smart key with push button start, auto folding outside mirrors, tilt steering, a cool glove compartment, etc make the Grand a top contender for the leader spot in the compact
car segment. Not to miss is an integrated 2 DIN music system with 1 GB memory to store and play music of your choice. Is the youth of India listening? ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Like I said before, the petrol 1.2 litre Kappa engine is a beauty. The diesel engine has only come in place to appease the diesel hungry car buyers. The diesel engine delivers 70bhp of power at 4000rpm and a decent torque of 160Nm@ 1500-2750rpm. Apparently the car gives a mileage of 24km per litre. The petrol engine has
MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT
WHEELZ & ROADZ better power as expected at around 82bhp. With tyres a bit larger than the ones on the i10, there’s an apparent improvement in the grip levels. With four people in the car as we spun around the long stretches, it proved to take the bumps quite gracefully. Precise gears shifts and a light steering made the drive even more comfortable. Since the car would primarily be owned and driven by city dwellers because of its compact easy-to-park size, it’s bound to give you the comfort and premium feel of a sedan with the distinct advantages of compact hatchback!

The boot space is sufficient to hold light luggage. However, the rear seats split 60:40 to make more room for carrying stuff if you have to. POWER AND PERFORMANCE A 1.0 litre advanced K-series engine does duty under the bonnet. This 3-cylinder engine produces 67bhp of maximum power and 90Nm of peak torque. Paired with a cable type 5-speed manual transmission, the Stingray becomes an effortless machine for travelling around city streets. By no margin is it a performance engine, but then that is not what it is meant to MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT
do. It is essentially a city car and it performs at best at that. The steering is light and compact dimensions make it a treat to whoosh past traffic. Maruti claims this car can be driven 20.5 kilometres for a litre of petrol, and we believe them for that statement. The air conditioning system happens to be excellent and cools the
cabin very quickly. The slight niggles that we felt are with the built quality of certain plastics which may not last long. The top variant given to us, VXi optional, came equipped with a driver side airbag, anti-lock brakes and keyless entry with security alarm. Really at this price point Maruti is offering customers as much as they could possibly ask for. OCTOBER 2013 / 33

aunched in 2001, the first generation Skoda Octavia was an instant hit. One look at it and you wanted one. It looked fantastic, drove well and was very comfortable. the third iteration, which we do understand as it is a big hit, the Octavia badge is back. It is now bigger, better and more beautiful than ever. its looks. It does look absolutely well proportioned. It has got a sharp face with a strong bonnet bulge, indicating the more powerful engine resting in there. The Skoda badge goes 3D now sitting between the new high gloss grille. The shoulders are muscular and depict strength of the body shell. The roof-line now is a bit higher and the wheelbase longer to increase cabin space. Come to the rear and you notice the rear resembles the Rapid’s rear, which is not a bad thing as it looks fine with the rest of the car. then the previous model. You get ample legroom and head room at the back and more in terms of width as well. The seats are very comfortable and support you all around. before with black and beige colour theme lending an air of elegance. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Skoda will offer a 2.0 litre turbo diesel, 1.8 litre turbo petrol and smaller 1.4 litre turbo petrol for the new Octavia. Both manual and automatic transmissions will be on offer. We drove the 2.0 litre diesel variant with manual gearbox and the 1.8 litre petrol with the 7-speed DSG up and down the roads from Chandigarh to Shimla. The entire route gave us the opportunity to test the cars on various driving conditions which included straight highways, a few busy traffic patches and the twisting mountain trails. Well we just love the way the new Octavia dances to the driver inputs. The ride quality is excellent and handling is absolutely supple. The Octavia graciously isolates you from road surface undulations, and being very quick on the move as well. The MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT
turbocharged petrol does not particularly sound brilliant at low speeds, but drop a couple of cogs and it starts to sing. It gives you a nice growling base note. The 205mm Goodyear tyres do a good job, but start to squeal their displeasure if you put your rally driver shoes on. The diesel engine is quiet tractable
and you need not shift many gears under normal driving conditions. We just love the sound isolation that Skoda has done for the Octavia, really quiet and peaceful inside. The Octavia, like all other Skoda vehicles, is a fine car. Skoda has worked on two major areas of car design, which are lightness and more power, and they have excelled in their effort. Other added achievements include more space for the passengers, and their luggage. And then are the numerous safety features to keep occupants safe. The price bracket this car sits in has a lot of competition already, but rest assured the Octavia comes with a lot of bells and whistles to justify itself. OCTOBER 2013 / 37

issan is well known around the world for building reliable and sturdy off-road vehicles. The X-trail was their offering for the Indian market, and however nice it actually was, it never managed to capture the customers interest here. The problem it faced was that it was priced above the 20 lakh bracket and lacked visibility. For 2013 Nissan has decide to bring in another family SUV which they presume is so good that it will turn tides for them. Nissan flew us to the city of Udaipur to experience the pre-launch version before it surprises the Indian customers. EXTERIOR We land at the airport and are instantly presented with the keys for a top-of-the-line XV variant of the Terrano. The generally held belief is that this is essentially a Renault Duster with fancy new clothes. Not so. Right from the first glance we would say it is very different. Where the Duster is butch in appeal, the Terrano is more upmarket and stylish product. The bonnet flows into the split grille. are greeted with familiar surroundings, however, the catch is in the upgraded quality of the cabin. There are subtle changes here and there which improve upon the ergonomics of the switches and buttons in the cockpit. The two-tone beige and black interiors lend a classy touch to the whole cabin. The integrated 2-Din audio supports all formats and connections for your entertainment. We were particularly happy with the noise isolation that Nissan achieved with the Terrano, the cabin is very quiet indeed.
Come to the rear and rejoice for there is ample space for three passengers. The top variants also get air-conditioning vents for more comfort and they work very well. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Our drive from Udaipur airport led us to Devigarh Palace and back the next day. Now the driving conditions are a mix of long straights, curvy hill roads, general traffic patches in the city and few rough off-road picturesque locations. This fairly

gave us taste of what the Terrano is like everyday. Needless to say we are impressed. The engine is punchy and gives you a fair kick, which is enough for a vehicle this size. Anymore than this and things might go uncomfortable. On open roads the Terrano pulled up to 150kmph which will be more than most customers’ requirements, and was fairly steady till then. On the curvy roads towards Kumbhalgarh the Terrano displayed its calm and poised when chucked into corners. There is a hint of body roll, but then it is a tall riding

SUV with suspension designed for comfort and it is expected. Push too hard, and we mean really hard, and the back tends to let go. Nissan told us that they have worked on weight saving technologies to increase efficiency and drivability and we approve of their efforts. The Terrano is better to drive then its nemesis in every way. The ride quality on uneven surfaces is very composed. It gobbles away bad patches of roads and also filters away the noise as the cabin is quiet. The only concern
we had was the tire roll, which can be narrowed down to the tires. These tires are equipped to keep the costs low, but we believe this is one area where manufacturers should spend money. Imagine yourself looking at the mirror after six months of workout. It is still you, but a fitter, better version of you. That is what the Terrano is. If Nissan gets the pricing right, it is a better option than its French counterpart. It does everything you ask it to do, and it does it all effortlessly.

arriors epitomise strength, tactics and precision. They are elite and enter the battlefield with tactical knowledge and understanding of their surroundings. If two come face to face for a battle, only one is the victor. A very skilled warrior has entered the Indian motoring battle ground. The name is Duke 390 and he hails from the kingdom of KTM. The kingdom claims he is one of the best warrior trained by them, middle-weight of course. We were given the opportunity to test his skills. We also assembled a few brave hearts from neighbouring kingdoms of Kawasaki and KTM itself. We dashed to the foothills of a laidback hamlet called Dehradun where we fought an epic battle. These hard edged warriors we are talking about are the Kawasaki Ninja 300, the KTM 200 Duke and KTM 390 Duke. Our intention was to test vehicles to report the seat-of-the-pants feeling rather than
44 / OCTOBER 2013
boring numbers. Here it’s not just about the power or cylinder layout that matters, but it is the delivery to the rider. What really matters is how much a rider can use that delivery. The KTM 390 Duke is a sensation when it comes to delivery. It is born to lead. After the three days we spent with it, it was difficult to give it back. In the right hands this is one of the quickest and sharpest machines on Indian roads. On a curvy track it would give a 600cc super sport motorcycle a run for its money. Yes, most of you will not believe in this statement, but a capable rider and the KTM 390 Duke form a ferocious combination. Most of our praise for this motorcycle is down to the arsenal that it packs. It has a 373cc single cylinder engine pumping out 43bhp of power. And because there is barely any body work the 390 weighs about 138kg (dry). This lets you hit 100kmph as quick as an Audi A7 Sportback with a MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT
WHEELZ & ROADZ
3.0 litre TFSI engine! The engine feels and sounds brawny and sonorous. You experience a shove pushing you back in the seat past 6500rpm. And it continues through all the six gears. The 200 Duke had short gearing and started to pant after 120kmph, but this thing just keeps on going leaving everything behind. You may just catch a glimpse of that in the rear view mirrors. Bring the Ninja 300 to the party and the competition gets stiffer. Both these bikes cross 160kmph and stay composed at those speeds. However the 390 edges in front of the Ninja because of the additional ponies in the Duke. Now it’s time to show the 390 some corners and what better can a place be than the curvy roads of Uttarakhand. The tight corners and elevation lets us experience the agility and torque spread of these machines. The biggest advantage with the 390 is that it comes equipped MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

with super sticky Metzeler tyres from Germany, which needless to mention are the best there are. These tyres just would not let go off the tarmac and allow you to achieve ludicrous lean angles with ease. Even the wet weather performance is brilliant. In the wet the 200 Duke and the Ninja 300 generate wheel-spin, but the 390 Duke just grips and grips. And to add to this is the anti-lock braking system which keeps you out of trouble when you overstep the limits of adhesion. The handling is absolutely flawless. You get acres of grip, mean lean angles and lots of pace if you know how to tame it. We say tame it because it might be very stable and has an ABS, but still is might powerful and often too much to handle for an average rider. The 200 Duke is still the recommended buy if you are still learning how to get the knee down. Trust us the 200 Duke is an extremely quick bike and enough for you to train on. The 390 Duke is for the ones who have graduated from Pulsar 220s and Duke 200s and are more serious in becoming motorcyclists. It is for the ones who have respect for horse power and the laws for physics. Approach towards a corner, brake progressively, lean in and exit out feeding back the power. The 390 rewards you if you do
it right. On a circuit a rider will just shave seconds off every lap. Every corner on the 390 Duke will add to your learning and you get encouragement from the bike to go faster next time. The performance of the bike is so breathtaking that you will not even consider how it looks. Yes it looks like the 200 Duke, and yes the basic structure is the same, but put it next to a 200 and you realise that how important body colour and graphics are to the appeal of a vehicle. Both the bikes are very distinct. The orange wheels and the frame add to the racy outlook. Then is the exhaust note, the 390 has a deeper and louder note which instantly sets it apart. The only issue that you have to deal with is the heating engine, which is expected from a 373cc single. At the end of the day the victor is decided, the KTM 390 Duke takes away all the glory. It is extremely good fun to ride, very quick and now also has the strong top end which the little brother lacked. And as a bonus will go 33km to a litre on being light on the throttle. The KTM 390 Duke is one of the quickest and most agile motorcycles on our roads. It dominates the competition without even breaking sweat. Remember what the Sun Tzu teaches? “The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.

he year 2013 has been a bit wet for travel. Monsoons played havoc in Uttarakhand in North India, so much so that hundreds perished in landslides and flash floods. In New Delhi, streets were flooded with motorists stuck in heavy jams across the city. It was in such times that I decided to pack bags and leave for Kerala in South India. Monsoons had already entered Kerala and I knew that it would be a wet holiday for me in the back waters of Alleppey. As my plane shuddered and tossed while darting through

thick black clouds, I could see a wet landscape from the window seat of my plane. Thankfully, the Kochi International Airport was not flooded. The rains had stopped as we stepped out of the airport with our luggage. A gleaming white Mahindra XUV500 awaited us. I had asked my good friend Mohan Nair from Mahindra & Mahindra to spare me a vehicle for a few days. He obliged with no fuss at all. An XUV500 is an ideal vehicle for a place like Kerala and a weather so wet. My family accompanying me heaved a sigh of relief once we were settled
inside the vehicle. With a 200mm road clearance level and large enough tyres, I was extremely confident that this Mahindra vehicle would take us to our destination safely. For the next three days, the Mahindra XUV500 not only carried us across the pot holed and flooded roads of Kerala, but also ensured that we experienced a very comfortable

journey. After having dropped the driver on the way, I took to the wheels of the XUV500 and drove for the next hour or so towards the Citrus Backwaters Spa Retreat in Alleppey. As we drove on the highway towards Alleppey, the rains came thundering down. But that did not deter us. The retreat is around 88km from the airport and the journey took us a couple of hours. We drove slowly and carefully. As we reached the Citrus Retreat, the roads had virtually vanished and all I could see was water. It was as if I was driving through a stream. I could see vehicles stranded by the side of the road with water filling up inside them. For a moment I panicked a wee bit. But minutes later I had crossed the trouble spot and had reached 50 / OCTOBER 2013
the parking area of the Citrus Retreat. CITRUS RETREAT IN ALLEPPEY Alleppey is a picturesque town with canals, backwaters, beaches and lagoons. This place is known for its popular Snake Boat Race. It is among the most popular tourist attractions in Kerala. Foreign tourists also flock here for a holiday. The Citrus Retreat is located in the midst of the backwaters and is a one-of-a-kind standalone retreat. In fact, from the retreat all one can see is water and the frequent passing of huge house boats, almost all of them air-conditioned and carrying tourists from across the country and abroad. We had booked into
a suite that was large enough to accommodate a family with two children. But the rains had left everything around a bit too damp and uninviting. Built typically on the European model, the bathrooms were open without roofs. It was obvious that this model is a complete failure during such seasons. I spotted chameleons and other creatures that had entered the dry confines, near my room. It made me terribly uncomfortable. We requested the front office to shift us to a room on the first floor. An apologetic general manager did that promptly. “This year the rains have been heavy and we have been taken by surprise, he told me. I was not impressed. I did not want to swim in a pool with chameleons as company! The two nights I spent at Alleppey was an experience worth treasuring. Apart from the refreshing view of the lake and the unending paddy fields, we were bowled over by the delectable cuisine. Sea food, Kerala chicken dishes and a whole host of other vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes ensured that all of us had no reasons to complain. The evening was spent relaxing with Ayurvedic massages and boat rides. After checking out of the MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT
Citrus, I drove towards the town of Thiruvalla for a night’s stay. It was in this small and prosperous town that I once owned a palatial house. As a kid I used to visit this place almost every Christmas holiday to see my grandparents. After nourishing my nostalgic memories, it was time to head back to the Kochi airport. I was to meet the driver on the way back so that he could drop us to the airport and take the car back to the Mahindra dealership. Like a typical Keralitie, he wanted to impress me with his driving skills. He was aware that I was a motoring

journalist. He wanted to prove that he was a shade better than my breed. He drove fast and somewhere on a lonely stretch we were spotted by a Kerala traffic speed radar gun. I paid up the fine while our man drove on with a sheepish look. The XUV500 did not let us down, despite the rains and pot holes that Kerala had to offer with all its natural beauty! OCTOBER 2013 / 51
