Mounds View Public Schools Adult Education offers programs for adults to improve their skills so they can advance in their jobs, prepare for further education or improve their daily lives. Learn English, earn your high school diploma or GED, prepare for college, or earn certifications for your next job. Our licensed instructional staff will help you achieve your goal! Courses are free. All courses are offered September through May at Silver View Education Center, 2574 County Hwy 10, Mounds View, MN 55112.

ACADEMIC COURSES ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) Adult students work together in a classroom setting to improve their English language communication skills. English classes focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing English. Beginning, intermediate and advanced classes are offered.

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA FOR ADULTS If you are an adult who needs fewer than 20 credits to graduate, you may participate in diploma classes and receive a high school diploma from Mounds View Public Schools. Location: Silver View Education Center Days

CompTia A+ Certification program will enable you to provide technical support and troubleshooting services to employers who need assistance with their computer hardware or software service desks. MICROSOFT OFFICE SPECIALIST (MOS)

CAREER CERTIFICATION COURSE

Build your technical skill set and advance your career with the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification program. The program is focused on helping you obtain the MOS certificate by passing three Certiport assessments. Upon completion, the certification will demonstrate to employers that you have the computer skills to work in office environments.

Classes are independent study style and are math- and reading-based. The instructor will work with you and your specific area of study.

ESSENTIAL COMPUTER SKILL TRAINING Gain the basic skills needed to use a computer and the internet in daily life, employment and higher education. ADULT ACTIVITIES & ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS Adult enrichment opportunities will include a wide variety of classes, workshops and activities – from gardening to Zumba, from day trips to driving, and much more. 55+ DEFENSIVE DRIVING

Ages 50+ | Registration fee: $175

Improve your driving skills. Get a discount on your personal auto insurance. No behind-the-wheel driving and no tests are included in this course. You will receive a certificate of completion to give to your insurance company. According to Minnesota state law, people age 55 and older who complete a state approved defensive driving course are eligible to receive a 10 percent, three-year discount on auto insurance. Presented by Minnesota Safety Council.

This camp will offer a variety of indoor and outdoor activities including, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, cooking and more! Fee includes great home-style meals, lodging and activities. YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID® USA WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS Ages 18+ | Registration fee: $50 Like traditional First Aid or CPR, this is an 8-hour training designed to give participants the skills to help adolescents ages 12-18 who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing an emotional crisis. The course uses discussions and simulations to demonstrate how to recognize and respond to warning signs and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care. Participants do not learn to diagnose, nor how to provide any therapy or counseling – rather, they learn to support youth by applying a five-step action plan. FENCING Grades 2-5 and 6-12 | Registration fee: $89 New and returning students are welcome to join the fastgrowing Olympic sport of fencing. Youth Enrichment League (YEL) fencing classes follows four basic components: 1. Teach It! Hall of Fame Olympic fencing coach Ro Sobalvarro crafts the lessons and curriculum. 2. Practice It! Students pair up to practice a fencing move or concept, rotate partners and repeat. 3. Move It! Students participate in fencing matches using only the moves taught so far. 4. Play It! Spend 10-15 minutes of each class fencing with multiple fencers at their skill level. Safety is our first priority. We supply safety swords, protective masks, chest plates and jackets in a highoctane, inclusive environment.

This club is designed for students to have fun while they improve their muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and climbing skills. Students will be using the climbing wall, cargo net, climbing ropes, swinging ropes, peg boards, ninja warrior slackline and more. ULTIMATE FRISBEE Grades 9-12 | Registration fee: available online Ultimate Frisbee combines the non-stop movement and athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football. The object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the opponent’s end zone while preventing the opposing team from catching a pass in your own end zone. Indoor practices start in February 2020.

TEENS INC. DRIVING SCHOOL This 35-hour program for students 14 years old and above will be conducted by a certified instructor from Teens Driving School, Inc., and will fulfill the state driver’s education requirement. The classroom portion of the course is 30 hours and will consist of lecture and discussion. Students will be taught defensive driving techniques and the “how to” and “whys” of safe driving. After completion of the program, students will be able to set up and participate in behind the wheel sessions to meet the six-hour state requirement. FIRST FRIENDS Age 2.5 | Separation & non-parent day This class combines ECFE and preschool together. In the fall, you will attend one day a week with your child, similar to ECFE. After winter break, your child will attend an additional day by themselves. The child-only day allows children to socialize with their peers, similar to preschool. STEAM Ages 3-5 | Separation We will tap into your preschoolers imagination and understanding of how things work. Both parent and child will engage in science, technology, engineering and mathematics activities in this fun-filled class. Parents move to a separate room for discussion.

PRESCHOOL REFUNDS Registration fees for preschool and prekindergarten are not refundable. PRESCHOOL EXTENDED DAY Before and after preschool care is available for full day and half day classes. Middle-day care is not available for half day preschool. A minimum enrollment must be met in order to run. Registration for extended day closes on May 15, 2020. PRESCHOOL TRANSPORTATION Transportation may be available. Children attending Pike Lake Education Center or Early Childhood Education Center for preschool must reside in the Bel Air Elementary, Pinewood Elementary, Sunnyside Elementary or Valentine Hills Elementary School attendance area. The mission of ECSE is to help children with disabilities achieve their potential by providing classes, services and supports to children ages birth to five. Community Education works in collaboration with community members and organizations to create lifelong learning opportunities that are responsive to community needs and enhance the quality of life in our evolving and diverse community. We invite all children, adults and families to take advantage of the variety of classes, activities and programs designed to meet the needs of our community. Meals on Wheels offers healthy, nutritious and affordable meals year-round to seniors and disabled adults who reside in the Mounds View Public Schools attendance area. Laurentian Environmental Center (LEC) is a public residential educational facility that combines science, environmental education, leadership training and outdoor skills recreation programs. Education programs are hands-on, discovery-oriented and aligned with Minnesota state graduation standards.
