Preschool Preschool programs provide a safe learning environment where students and families are valued and embraced as unique members of our community. Relationships and joyful learning are at the heart of all our work to help children develop critical thinking skills, build confidence and grow socio-emotionally.

M ounds View Public Schools offers a variety of

preschool classes for children ages 2½ to 5 years. Preschool classes provide activities to encourage each child’s growth and development and to prepare for kindergarten entrance. Classes meet two to five days per week. Preschool at Mounds View Public Schools: • aligns with the District’s K-12 curriculum, • offers limited bus transportation and includes supervised curbside pick-up, • offers before/after preschool childcare, • receives a 4-star rating from Parent Aware and • collaborates with Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE). The curriculum, based on Minnesota’s Early Learning Standards, promotes each child’s social-emotional, language, physical and intellectual development. Preschool curriculum is aligned with kindergarten to create a continuum of learning. Teachers of children ages three and four use the Teaching Strategies GOLD assessment system to determine if students are at the appropriate stage of development or in need of acquiring some necessary skills. Assessment information is also made available to parents during communication meetings.

Licensed early childhood teachers promote each child’s social-emotional, language, physical and intellectual development by using the following curricula: Creative Curriculum Using exploration and discovery as a way of learning, Creative Curriculum enables children to develop confidence, creativity and lifelong critical thinking skills. ezWrite Handwriting Program Easy and engaging program for children to learn to write based on eight beginning strokes. Jolly Phonics Provides a thorough foundation for reading and writing. It teaches the letter sounds in an enjoyable, multisensory way, and enables children to use them to read and write words. Teaching Strategies GOLD Teachers of children ages three and four use the Teaching Strategies GOLD assessment system. Teachers can determine if the child is at his or her appropriate stage of development or in need of acquiring some necessary skills. TS GOLD guides teachers through the process of evaluating each child’s knowledge, skills and behaviors. Teachers share this information with parents. In addition to structured activities, children have time for free play. Through play, children gain valuable knowledge about the world and how to get along with others.

Early Childhood Special Education Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) provides services to children birth to five who are eligible for/or in need of specifically designed instruction. Services may include assessment, availability of resources, consultation to family and/or direct services in identified areas of need. ECSE services are administered by a team of special education teachers, speech and language clinicians, school psychologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists and a school nurse.

Services for children ages birth to 2 are home-based using the Primary Service Provider Model which allows families to connect with one professional service provider but have the entire team available for services. ECSE services for children ages 3 - 5 are provided at Snail Lake Education Center in Shoreview, Early Childhood Education Center in New Brighton and Pike Lake Education Center in New Brighton. The 3 - 5 program partners with the Early Childhood Preschool and Play and Learn Preschool to provide same-age typically developing peer models within an inclusive setting.

Family Resource Center The Family Resource Center is a free educational lending library located at Snail Lake Education Center in Shoreview and the Early Childhood Education Center in New Brighton. The Center offers resources for parents including books, DVDs and parent-child books on tender topics like a new sibling, a death in the family or moving. Books and parent resources include guiding behaviors, social development, family relationships and more.

Early Childhood Screening Early Childhood Screening is required for entrance into kindergarten and is offered throughout the year at Pike Lake Education Center at no charge. It is best to have your child screened between ages 3 / and 4. Screening identifies possible learning or health concerns so that your child can get the needed help before starting school. Call 651-621-7421 to make your child’s early childhood screening appointment today.

Help Me Grow is an interagency initiative of the State of Minnesota Department of Education, Department of Health and Department of Human Services which partners with school districts and local agencies. Help Me Grow provides resources for families to understand developmental milestones and learn if there are concerns. This helps families take the lead in seeking additional support or referring their child for a comprehensive, confidential screening or evaluation at no cost. For more information, visit helpmegrowmn.org/HMG/index.htm or call 1-866-693-GROW.
