2018 Season in Review What a great ride the 2018 season was! As I reflect back on the journey, my takeaway from the 2018 season was that you reap what you sow. Following the 2017 season, as a program we knew that if we did not intentionally change some things, it would be foolish to expect different results. Our guys immediately made a decision to invest in the weight room and we quickly saw some incredible results. Our program is all about accountability to yourself and making a decision to grow each day as athletes and men. A couple of the big “Clubs” in our weight room that guys strive to join are the 800 LB Club and 225 LB Clean Club. It takes discipline and grit to join both of these clubs. Coming off the 2017 season we had 4 members in the 800 LB Club. To grow as a team we needed this club to expand. With a lot of work and dedication, our 800 LB Club grew from 4 members to 18 members in one year. The power clean is the signature lift of our strength program. Our group took pride in the lift as we know that it translates to more explosive and physical football players on the field. The previous school record was 23 members in the 225 Club. Our guys goal was to break that record which was a very lofty goal. Well, not only did these guys break the record, they made it to 32 guys in the 225 Club!!! Success is contagious and these guys sharpened one another all off season in our weight room! As a program, we want our guys experience to be much more than just the game of football. Throughout the season we dedicated time weekly to go through the book “Chop Wood Carry Water.” The premise of the book was to be the best version of you by focusing on the process of being great. Our guys did some great things on the field, but it is who they are becoming as men that truly matters. Service is one of our key values. To earn their “Mustang” decals, our varsity guys needed to serve at least 8 hours in the community. It was awesome to see all the different ways our guys helped give back. Our guys realized the joy that can be found in helping others. Another emphasis in the 2018 season was our guys using their platform to influence our future Mustangs. We were intentional in this pursuit, as we held an “All Mustang Football Night,” attended youth games, and invited the youth to eat with us at our Championship Dinners. Our guys used their platform and made a great impact on our future Mustangs! Game Highlights: Week One STMA Our first game at St. Michael Albertville was a statement game. Two minutes into the game we were down 14 -0. It was a game of incredible resilience as we battled back and scored the winning TD with no time on the clock! Week Three TG On a perfect night in front of a packed house our guys came to play as we shutout Totino Grace 28-0. Our defense scored a school record THREE TD’S!! Week Five Stillwater We love playing Stillwater and this year was no different as we traveled to Pony Stadium to take down the Ponies at their Homecoming game. Throughout the game we faced a lot of adversity with multiple starters going down. After trailing at halftime our guys never quit as we came back to win the game 17-9.
Week Six East Ridge Our guys were ready for the challenge as we hosted the #4 ranked East Ridge Raptors for Homecoming. East Ridge came in with an offense that was averaging over 500 yards per game. Our defense was up to the challenge as we recorded 10 sacks and held the Raptors to 228 yards. Offensively we did a great job of controlling the clock and found the end zone on a couple of huge pass plays. The game ended with the Mustangs on top 21-10. Week Eight White Bear Lake To close out the season, we traveled to White Bear to take on a much improved Bears team. We knew the game would be a battle as playoff seeding was on the line. Our guys were ready from the get-go as we forced turnovers on the Bears first two possessions. In total, our defense forced 6 turnovers including 5 interceptions! Offensively we racked up close to 300 yards and held the Bears to 160 yards. The 21-7 win guaranteed a home playoff game! Play-offs Burnsville To open the playoffs we hosted a very good Burnsville team who had just come off wins over Minnetonka and Lakeville South. Burnsville was physically the biggest team we had faced all year, yet our guys were not intimidated. Our defense set the tone throughout the game forcing multiple 3 and outs and creating 4 Burnsville turnovers. Special Teams played a key role as our punt team did a fantastic job pinning the Blaze deep. We also got a 41 yard field goal to take a 10 point lead. After Burnsville came back to tie the game at 10-10, our offense knew we needed a big drive and the guys delivered. On a key 3rd and 2 play, we scored the game winning TD on a 33 yard play action pass! Team Accomplishments: Finished with a #6 ranking in the Class 6A State Rankings Playing the same schedule as 2017 we doubled our wins 95% of the varsity team volunteered at least 8 hours in the community 80% of our Senior Class improved their GPA 32 Members in 225 Clean Club 18 Members in 800 LB Club Thank you to our Senior class who set a fantastic example of hard work and discipline. Tradition never graduates and your legacy will continue on through our Mustang Program! Love you guys! Coach Moberg
