Get to Know ‘Em Meet Meg Kaster

My name is Meg Kaster and I’m the Library Media Specialist. I grew up in Cedar Rapids and earned my education degree at the College of Saint Benedict. I then taught high school English in southern Minnesota and Madison. After a few years I decided to combine my passion for reading, making, and learning by becoming a librarian. I earned my Master’s in Library and Information Studies from UW Madison and became the Youth Services Director at a public library in the area. When the opportunity arose to return to a high school setting, this time as librarian, I couldn’t pass it up. My husband and I are kept busy chasing our 1.5 year old toddler around but I’m hoping to at least catch a showing of Freaky Friday in November at MVHS. In my free time, I enjoy reading, swimming, and crafting.

Teaching is in my blood: my siblings, mom, husband, grandpa, aunts, uncles and cousins have all chosen to teach. I like to think I’ve found the best of both worlds. I get to interact with the entire student body, leading them toward the perfect book, or the right online resource. I get to teach many forms of crafting, art, technology and making within the makerspace, and I look forward to learning the amazing technology housed in the ILC in the months to come (3D printer, here I come). The Information Learning Center is truly a space where students can find the resources and space to follow their passions, and I look forward to getting to know each individual as they pursue that passion.

Meet Becky Ramacher My name is Becky Ramacher and I am the Dean of Support Services. I grew up in New Brighton and graduated from Irondale High School in 1988. I went on to attend the University of St. Thomas where I earned a B.A. in social studies education and a Masters degree in special education. I have worked in the district for 26 years as a special education teacher at Highview, Irondale, and Mounds View. This is my first year as a dean and I am enjoying getting to know more students and staff. I have fully embraced wearing Mustang green! I live in Andover with my husband, Rick. We have a daughter who is in her third year at UW Madison and a son who is a freshman at St. Cloud State. I enjoy spending time with family and friends at our cabin on Fish Trap Lake in central Minnesota. I also like to travel, read and garden. There’s something about weeding, digging in the dirt and planting new possibilities that brings a sense of peace and calm to me. I look forward to planting roots here and building positive relationships with students, families, and staff.

Get to Know ‘Em Meet Bethany DeCent

My name is Bethany DeCent and I’m an administrative intern at Mounds View this year. I am not new to Mounds View, but am new to this role in the building. This is my 10th year in the district. I student taught at Mounds View as an English teacher and was hired the following fall as an ELA teacher and drama director. In between then and now I have received a masters degree from St. Thomas, my admin license through St. Cloud, and have worked as an instructional strategies facilitator, content area specialist, and middle school literacy coach before coming back to the building as an admin intern. I have thoroughly enjoyed working in all of these different capacities, but am excited to be back at the high school. I live in Blaine with my husband, Sean, our two daughters, Hadley (5), and Shae (2), and our puppy, Bobby. We have a lot of fun with our busy girls and spend a lot of time up north in Aitkin, where we are both from. I love watching scary movies, eating wings, attending concerts, and acting silly with my little girls!

Meet Ellen Elmquist My name is Ellen Elmquist and I am a dean this year for students with last name Kb-Mil. I graduated from Irondale High School many years ago! I graduated with my bachelor degree from UW-Eau Claire and my master degree from Concordia University. I have worked in the Mounds View school district for the past 11 years at Irondale as a dean for students on an IEP. I started my teaching career at Fridley High School as a Special Education teacher and worked there for 17 years. While at Fridley, I helped start the first girls soccer team and was the head coach for 6 years. I also was the head coach for softball for 9 years and had a team finish 3rd in the 2002 State Tournament. I have also coached Adapted Athletics and basketball. I have a 17 year old son, Ian, who will graduate this year from Irondale and has kept me busy with baseball games and Marching Band. I enjoy gardening, going on walks with my dog, golfing, going to concerts (especially 80 bands!) and traveling. I thoroughly enjoy working in a high school environment and I am excited to meet new students, parents and staff this year.

Get to Know ‘Em Meet Alana Schmiesing

My name is Alana Schmiesing and I am the new Licensed School Nurse. I graduated from the U of M School of Nursing in May of 2018. My first nursing job was on the Surgical-Trauma-Neuroscience Unit at Hennepin County Medical Center. After working in the hospital setting for a year, I wanted to explore nursing opportunities in the community. I am very excited to promote health and wellness in the school setting as a School Nurse! I am originally from Eden Prairie and graduated from Eden Prairie High School in 2013. I currently live in Chanhassen with my partner, Nick, and our tabby cat, Colby Jack (CJ). In my free time I enjoy spending time at my family cabin in on Pelican Lake. I also love musical theater, movies, books, and a good television series! I am so impressed with the strong sense of community and the standard of excellence that I have experienced so far and I am looking forward to a great rest of the year getting to know students and staff.

Meet Mackenzie Thompson My name is Mackenzie Thompson and I am a Special Education Teacher here at Mounds View. I graduated with my undergraduate degree in Education from Bethel University and returned shortly after to obtain my Master’s Degree in Special Education, receiving the Academic Behavior Strategist (ABS) licensure. This is my third year working in the Mounds View school district. I started my career in this district at Edgewood Middle School, where I also worked as a Special Education Teacher. I enjoy working with all age groups and am excited to be back in the high school setting. I currently live in Shoreview and have a miniature dachshund named Arlo. When I’m not at work I enjoy going hiking, reading, spending time with my two nieces and going up north to spend a weekend on the lake with my family. I also like to cheer on our local MN Wild hockey team and enjoy traveling as often as possible. Some of my favorite adventures have been to Alaska, Nova Scotia, Rome and London (where I studied abroad in college). One of my goals as an educator is to provide students with the opportunity to experience learning in an inclusive and welcoming environment. The best part of being a teacher is watching students grow as individuals and learning from them each day. I’m thrilled to be part of the team here at Mounds View and look forward to continuing to expand my educational and teaching experience. “Have courage and be kind.” ~ Cinderella

Pictured right to left: Ryan Poepard, Ellen Elmquist, Nicole Fisher, Kendra Eckman, Becky Ramacher, Andra Storla, Mark Nelson, Jeff Nowak It was great to meet with 9th grade families this summer to welcome them to Mounds View High School and to get to know their students. We greatly appreciate the flexibility families showed by meeting off-site at the District Office. The Mustang Mentor Executive Board and Mustang Mentors did a wonderful job helping coordinate activities for the 9th grade first day and assisted Youth Frontiers staff with the Respect Retreat which was held at the Shoreview Community Center on September 26th. The Mentors will continue to coordinate follow-up activities for 9th grade students throughout the year. Currently, Mounds View deans are meeting with all seniors to discuss post-secondary plans and providing resources available to help in this process. We will be meeting individually with sophomores and juniors later this semester. The PreACT took place October 23rd at Mounds View. The PreACT is a shorter version of the ACT that is designed for 10th grade students. This is a timed test that assesses students in four subject areas: English, Math, Reading and Science. This test is helpful in terms of providing information regarding a student’s level of college readiness.

On October 15th, Mounds View alum, Taylor Iwaszko, a pediatric ICU nurse, spoke to students about The Bandana Project, a group she helped co-found on the UW-Madison campus. The group was created to help provide mental health resources to students. Mounds View deans Andra Storla and Jeff Nowak are co-advising a group of Bandana Project students at Mounds View to help provide resources to our students. More student presentations are planned. (See below) • Vaping and Chemical use • Student Health & Well Being • Post-Secondary Career Opportunities The speaker series also includes presentations geared toward parents. Mounds View was pleased to have pediatric pulmonologist, Dr. Brooke Moore, of Gillette Children’s Hospital present on October 10th regarding the dangers of e-cigarettes/vaping. Understanding the Financial Aid Process

As Mounds View High School seniors think about applying to college, application fees should not be a barrier. There are many opportunities for students to apply to Minnesota institutions for free. Here is the comprehensive, 20192020 Free Application Opportunities at Minnesota State Colleges and Universities list. For all students: Many colleges never charge an application fee; sometimes this offer is limited to applications submitted online. Many colleges waive the application fee during College Knowledge Month (October), for either the whole month or for a week. Some institutions use promo codes for their applications during this time. For students from low-income families: Application fees will be waived throughout the year for low-income students at any institutions or campuses that are part of the University of Minnesota, Minnesota State or the Minnesota Private College Council. Deans and college admission staff can help a student make these arrangements. Visit the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) website for eligibility information and the fee waiver form.

FAFSA

The 2020-2021 FAFSA is now open. Students and families can complete the FAFSA in preparation for post-secondary enrollment for 2020-2021. Students and families hoping to access federal grants, state grants, and loans must complete the FAFSA. FAFSA information is located here: https://fafsa.ed.gov/. Resources, information, and help completing the FAFSA is available at Federal Student Aid, an Office of the U.S. Department of Education.

Minnesota Office of Higher Education

The Minnesota Office of Higher Education is an additional, excellent resource for students and families seeking information about post-secondary plans. The Minnesota Office of Higher Education offers publications, information, and materials covering the college search process, the financial aid process, and additional paying for college resources.

Equity Services The Equity Promise

Mounds View Public Schools is committed to preparing all students for opportunities of their choice after high school, whether they choose college, a trade school, technical college, the military or employment. The Equity Promise states: • Programs and services will be in place at all schools to ensure that race, gender, class and disability will not predict students’ success in Mounds View Public Schools. • Student academic performance will not fall into patterns identifiable by factors such as race, ethnicity, English language proficiency, socio-economic status and disability. • The school that a student attends will not be the predictor of his/her school success. As part of this Pre-K - 14 plan, a brochure was created to show the 12 Habits of Mind students can begin to practice as early as in elementary school.
