MVHS - HOME OF THE MUSTANGS!
From the Principal…. Hello Mounds View High School Families, It’s hard to believe that the school year is half over and semester one has come to a close. Thank you for your flexibility as we had to amend our finals schedule due to the snow day. I hope your student has settled into their second semester schedule and adjusted to a new routine. Get to Know ‘Em Meet Erik Hall
My name is Erik Hall and I am in my first year as a physics teacher at Mounds View High School. I previously taught chemistry and physics at Rush City High School for four years. Before that, I taught chemistry and physics at Marshall High School for four years. I grew up in Luck, Wisconsin, and I went to college at St. Olaf and earned a master’s degree in teaching from St. Scholastica. My wife Laura and I have one daughter, Beda, who is 20 months old. She has lots of energy and keeps us busy! When I have some free time I enjoy spending time with my family, running, walking, being outside, cooking, and reading. I really enjoy teaching science, because we get to do many interesting labs in class and I get to learn something new everyday. I have felt very welcomed here at Mounds View High School and I have really enjoyed my first semester. I hope to continue my career here for many years. Go Mustangs!
My name is Bjorn Hanson and this is my ninth year working in education. This is my first year teaching at Mounds View High School. The previous seven years I worked at AFSA Charter High School in Vadnais Heights as a special education teacher/case manager, educational assistant, substitute teacher, and coach. I am excited to be a part of the Mounds View community as a special education teacher/case manager. I am also excited to coach on the boys basketball team staff at the high school as well.
Meet Bjorn Hanson
I grew up Long Prairie, MN and graduated from Long Prairie Grey Eagle High School. After high school I attended Bethel University and graduated with a major in Secondary Social Studies Education (5-12) and minors in History and Athletic Coaching. I later went back to Bethel University Graduate Program to pursue licensure and a master’s degree in Special Education. I currently have a dual license in Emotional/Behavioral Disorders and Specific Learning Disabilities, as well as a license in Social Studies Education. I currently live in Lino Lakes with my wife, Aly, who works part-time from home while being with our two sons, Harris (4) and Henrik (1). I love spending time with family. Whether it is serving at church, playing games, being at the lake, or watching sports, it is always great to be together. I am excited to learn and grow together with the Mounds View Community. Health Office News Fight the Flu!
We are starting to see an increase in the number of influenza cases in our community. Sometimes confused with the “stomach flu”, influenza (or “the flu”) is a contagious respiratory illness with symptoms that include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, extreme tiredness, and body aches. Symptoms usually come on quickly and often interfere with daily activities. If your student exhibits symptoms of influenza, allow your student the rest they need at home both so that they can recover and to help prevent the illness from continuing to spread. What can you do to help prevent the spread of influenza? • Cover coughs and sneezes • Stay home from school or work if you are ill • Wash hands often • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth • Drink plenty of fluids • Get adequate sleep • Get a flu shot - it’s not too late!
If your student is ill, remember to call the Health Office at 651-621-7104 to report symptoms so that we continue to be aware of cases in our Mounds View community. For more information from the Minnesota Department of Health, CLICK HERE.

Winter Weather & School Closings As we navigate another unpredictable winter season, here are a few notes to remember. Schools could be cancelled if: • Buses won’t start or run dependably. • Local road conditions in our neighborhoods are dangerous or impassable. • Our neighborhoods experience sustained wind chills of 40 to 45 degrees below zero during the hours between morning bus pick-ups and afternoon bus drop-offs. If air temperatures reach 0 degrees and/or wind chills reach 10 degrees below zero, outdoor recess will be cancelled at all six elementary schools. Like neighboring districts, Mounds View relies solely on forecasts provided by the National Weather Service –Twin Cities. Families should always assume schools are open and in session, unless they hear or see differently. The District will notify parents no later than 5:30 am on the day of the cancellation, using text messages, voicemail messages, e-mail messages and website postings. Read more about weather-related school closures HERE.

U.S. Department of Education College Scorecard The U.S. Department of Education recently released its first annual update of the redesigned College Scorecard. This tool ensures that students and families have the most-up-to-date, comprehensive, and reliable information available on colleges. The site allows students and families to sort and filter their search results to easily compare schools and decide which college makes the most sense when considering the typical costs, average student loan amounts, students’ ability to repay their loans, and their future earnings.
Minnesota Office of Higher Education’s Summer Nudging Program Minnesota’s Office of Higher Education (OHE) offers a free, text message-based, college access program called Summer Nudging. Summer Nudging sends helpful reminders and recommendations via text messages to help students stay on track for college enrollment. These free text messages remind students about important college to-do’s, like FAFSA and financial aid information, transcript reminders, placement exam information, orientation and class registration dates, housing and meal plan information, and transportation options. Students and parents can sign up by texting “COLLEGE” to (651) 243-9980.
