MVHS - HOME OF THE MUSTANGS!

From the Principal…. Mounds View High School families, With the recent snowfall, it’s hard to believe spring break is here. Whether your break involves travel or plans here at home, I hope you and your family enjoy the time off together. We have had a smooth transition into 2nd Semester. Registration for the 2018-2019 school year is complete and plans are underway for next year! Winter sports and activities are winding down. It was a wonderful season with over 400 students participating. Notable upcoming events include the rescheduled Spring Choir concert, on March 20 and the Physics/ STEAM fair on March 26. In addition, Synergy and Jazz Band are hosting a swing dance on March 29. Check the building calendar for specific Spring activities. Our students and staff are busy preparing for the ACT exam which will be administered on April 3. All students in 11th grade will register on March 21 during ReFLECT. REMINDER: Seniors do not have school on April 3, sophomores will take the Pre-ACT exam and 9th grade students will have the opportunity to visit local colleges. This past month we have been fortunate to host two fantastic speakers. In celebration of Black History month, Michael Alexander from Target Corporation shared his story. We also had an excellent presentation from Elizabeth Babkin with the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI). Elizabeth spoke to our students about finding and maintaining healthy balance. No doubt we will have a busy spring! There will be two more Communication Nights, one in April and one in May. These will be opportunities to connect with your student’s teacher or dean. As always, if you need anything, do not hesitate to contact us. Regards,

Stephanie Bruggers Principal

Get to Know ‘Em Meet Christine Alexander

My name is Christine Alexander and this is my first year as an English Language Arts teacher at Mounds View High School. I previously taught English Language Arts at Chippewa Middle School for 15 years!! Before that, I taught 8 years in the Apple Valley/Rosemount/Eagan school district, both at the high school and middle school levels. I have coached soccer (believe it or not), speech teams, and have been advisors for many clubs, committees and organizations at all of the different schools over the years. I live in Vadnais Heights with my husband, Dan, and two cats, Pickles and Ingaborg. My daughter, Anne Marie, a Bethel grad, is getting married next November so I will soon have a son-in-law, poor guy! Does he know what he is getting into? I also have son, Andy, who graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson and now lives and works in Stillwater.

What do I do in my spare time? That is a scary question. My husband and I sell antiques and collectibles, so we love estate sales, thrift stores and garage sales. I like things that have stories, items that are old/quirky/eclectic. There are definite hoarder tendencies. I am an avid reader, traveler, card and board game player with family and friends, I attempt to play the accordion and love going to the cabin. Other than being a talk show host, there is no other job I would rather have than being a teacher. I love it here at MVHS. It has been a great experience reconnecting with all of my former students and meeting new staff. Thanks for putting up with me!

Meet Aaron Redman My name is Aaron Redman and while this is my first year teaching social studies at Mounds View High School it is my 19th year teaching overall. The past 15 years have been at Irondale High School with early stops at Fridley and Wayzata High School. In addition to teaching at MVHS, I have been an assistant football coach for the last four seasons and have been co-head coach of the girl’s track & field program since 2003. I grew up in Minneapolis before moving to Plymouth in junior high and graduating from Wayzata High School. After high school I attended Bethel University and graduated with a double major in Secondary Social Studies Education and History with a business minor. In addition, I have a masters of curriculum and instruction from the University of St. Thomas and have an educational specialists degree in process. My awesome wife is a successful business sales rep. and we have two amazing young boys, Jacob (3) and Elijah (1). In my/our free time I/we enjoy reading, watching movies, attending sporting events and theatrical performances, dates with my wife, and hanging out with friends and family. Mounds View is a special community that strives for excellence in all it does. I am extremely blessed to be building relationships at this school and in this community. Go Mustangs!

Health Office News Medication Safety

• • • • • •

During the month of March, we observe National Poison Prevention Week with a day set aside for Medication Safety. Did you know that half of the prescriptions dispensed each year are taken improperly? We refer to incorrectly taking medications as misuse and it’s often unintentional. Abuse can be defined as taking medicines that aren’t prescribed to you or taking them for a purpose other than what it was prescribed for. Regardless of the intention behind it, improper use of medication can be dangerous and can be prevented. Here are some tips to for promoting the medication with your student and in your home: Demonstrate respect for medications. Model reading instructions and taking prescription medications only as prescribed. Use over-the-counter medications sparingly and at the appropriate doses found on the label. Ask your doctor or prescriber if any of the directions for taking a medication are unclear. Store all medications up and away and in a safe place, including over-the-counter medications and vitamins. Be thoughtful about where you keep medications when you’re not at home. Be careful not to keep medication in purses, bags, or coat pockets for example in places where small children or others could get into them. Keep all medicines in their original container so that they can be clearly identified and won’t be easily confused. Talk about medication safety in your home and community. Dispose of any unused or expired medication safely. Free and convenient drop boxes are offered through Ramsey County Medication Collection Program. The nearest drop box is located at the Sheriff’s Patrol Station (1411 Paul Kirkwold Dr in Arden Hills just off of Hwy 96) and is open Monday-Friday from 8-4 PM.

ACT Registration Process

The ACT will be administered to all Mounds View juniors on April 3 during the school day. Registration for the test will be completed at school on March 21 during ReFLECT. Families do not need to complete registration on their own.

Communication Night

Join us on April 12 between 6:00-8:00 PM for our Communication Night. This is a great opportunity to meet with teachers/deans to discuss student progress. Teachers are available for appointments between 6-8 PM or drop ins between 6-8 PM. Teachers also have office hours during the school year if you have an issue that needs to be addressed sooner (see teacher’s website).

Course Registration

Registration for year 2018-2019 is complete. Deans would like to thank everyone for thoughtfully selecting courses for next year. If students still have questions about their course selections, they should connect with their dean. It is important to us that students select an appropriate course load. Our goal is for students to challenge themselves appropriately, while keeping a healthy balance in mind.

Minnesota FoodShare March is Minnesota FoodShare month and a portion of all dollars and pounds collected is matched by Minnesota FoodShare. Mounds View High School is participating in a district-wide food drive. We envision a Minnesota where all residents have access to healthy food and no one struggles with food insecurity. Over 1/3 of the students in the Mounds View Public School District are on free and/or reduced lunches and our food shelf is currently serving over 825 households each month. Last year, we had over 23,500 individual requests for help and gave out over 600,000 pounds of food and personal care items – up nearly 30%. The more that’s donated, the bigger our match!! Here’s how you can help: • DONATE FOOD! We appreciate all nonperishable food items. • DONATE FUNDS! Every $1.00 is worth $8.00 in purchase power. • SPREAD THE WORD! You never know who may need a helping hand. Donations can be dropped in the Attendance Office until April 3. Let’s “End Hunger in Minnesota”!
