MVHS - HOME OF THE MUSTANGS!
From the Principal…. Mounds View Families, I’d like to begin by thanking everyone for a very positive start to the school year. My first year as principal is off to a great start and I look forward to working with you and your student throughout the remainder of the year. The first day of school for our new students was a great opportunity for them to navigate and learn the building, meet their teachers and get to know their Mustang Mentor. I’m so impressed with the work our Mustang Mentors do to welcome the freshman class. What a great way to transition into high school. Fall has been busy with a variety athletics, activities and accomplishments. These are highlighted in this issue. Students have been working hard and rehearsing for the upcoming fall musical, “Little Women” which opens on November 2 and runs through November 4. If your student is interested in any of our athletics or activities or would like more information, please visit the Activities Office. Thank you to all families for attending one or both of the first two Communication Nights. Our teachers truly value the opportunity to get to know the parents/ guardians of their students. Please know that if you are unable to attend, teachers are happy to connect with you another time. Teacher communication hours can be found on the teacher’s webpage. In closing, thank you for your continued support of Mounds View High School. We are fortunate to have such strong partnerships with our families and community members. Sincerely,
Stephanie Bruggers Principal

Get to Know ‘Em Meet Jeff Nowak
My name is Jeff Nowak and I am in my first year as a dean here at Mounds View High School. I was a dean at Highview Middle School for the past five years. Before that I was a counselor at White Bear Lake High School for four years, working with juniors and seniors. I grew up in St. Paul and I went to college and graduate school at the U of MN Twin Cities and Minnesota State University, Mankato. In my free time I enjoy being outdoors, running, biking, and cross country skiing. When I get the chance, I am also renovating our home from top to bottom. My wife Jennifer and I just celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary this past summer. We have awesome four year old twins, George and Alice. I am excited for them to become Mustangs! I am looking forward to meeting all of the students and families here at Mounds View. It is a great pleasure to be part of such an amazing school and community!
My name is David Ritter and I am in my first year as a dean at Mound View. This is my sixth year in education. I started my career at Wayzata High School. I taught special education for three years as an Emotional and Behavior Disorder teacher. I then moved to a dean position at Wayzata for two years. While I miss being in the classroom and having the teacher to student connection, I enjoy the challenges and responsibilities the role of dean brings.
Meet David Ritter
I grew up on the west side of the cities and graduated from Eden Prairie High School. My journey into education was not the traditional path--even though both my parents are teachers. I attended Augsburg College (now University) and earned a degree in Mass Communication and Public Relations. I worked in school and city public relations for three years before I finally admitted that I was more like my parents than I wanted to admit. Once I came to grips with that reality, I went back to school at Bethel University and earned my teaching licensure and master’s degree. I am also currently working on my administration degree at Concordia University, St. Paul. I hope to be finished sometime later next year. I currently live in St. Louis Park with my wife, Jenny, who works as a first-grade teacher at Bel Air Elementary, and daughters Reese (3 years old) and Quinn (8 months old). When I am not hanging out with my family, I enjoy traveling, watching and attending sporting events, attending live music concerts, restoring furniture, and home improvement projects. I also enjoy coaching football and currently coach defensive line at Mounds View. Prior to coaching at Mounds View, I coached at Wayzata High School for six years and Eden Prairie High School for five years. I am excited to be a part of the Mustang Community and look forward to many years of helping students at Mounds View. Go Mustangs!

9th Grade:
It has been a pleasure meeting with our 9th grade students and families this summer. Through these we have been able to establish partnerships between school and home and create valuable 4-year plans. The freshmen participated in a respect retreat at the end of September. The retreat focused on empowering students to respect themselves and others. If you haven’t had an opportunity to meet with your dean, contact them to set up a time.
10th Grade:
Sophomore students took the Pre-ACT on October 24. The Pre-ACT is considered a 10th grade level ACT test that acts as another opportunity to experience a timed standardized test. It is the second test in the ACT series and points out academic strengths and areas of growth. It also allows students, families and deans the opportunity to see if the students are currently on track to be college ready. Furthermore, there is a career explorer that will give career and field of major study ideas as the students begin to research their post-secondary options. The Pre-ACT is compromised of four timed tests: Reading, Math, English and Science.

From the Deans Desk 11th Grade:
This fall juniors should be investigating colleges of interest. Naviance can be a great tool to run college searches, as well as to gather information on admission rates, costs, majors and activities colleges offer. College visits should take place during the school year and we suggest getting on campuses when school is in session to gain a better feel for what the college is like while students are there. MVHS has college admissions representatives visiting our school throughout the year. A complete list of colleges visiting and sign-ups are located on Naviance.
12th Grade:
In September, Deans met with seniors to go over the college application process, including how to order transcripts and letters of recommendations. Students who were absent from this meeting are encouraged to meet with their dean or Mrs. van Bruggen in the paddock to go over the process.

7 Tips for creating connection with your teen: Tip 1. Get into your teen’s shoes and empathize. “I didn’t realize you felt that way.” “It sounds like you’re feeling discouraged.” “You don’t want to do ANYTHING right now.”
Tip 4. Replace humiliation with encouragement. “I have faith in you to learn from your challenges and mistakes.” “You’re trying to figure out what is important to you.”
Tip 2. Listen and be curious. “Tell me more.” “That’s an interesting idea.” “Anything else?” “What does that mean to you?”
Tip 5. Make sure the message of love gets through. “You’re more important to me than your grades.” “Do you know how much I love you?” “What would be the most helpful thing I could do?”
Tip 3. Stop worrying about what others think, and do what is best for your teen.
Tip 6. Involve your teen in focusing on solutions. “How could we work together to figure this out?” “What ideas do you have for solving this problem?” “What’s important to you in this situation?” Tip 7. Make respectful agreements.

Student Council Student Council is a student-run organization that provides students the opportunity to take on leadership positions within the school. Student Council provides opportunities both to develop community among the student body, as well as to contribute to our greater community outside of Mounds View High School. Throughout the year Student Council will celebrate Bus Driver Day, Nutrition Services Day, Custodian Day and plan a food drive to support our local Ralph Reeder Food Shelf. Student Council Homecoming week: Spirit Days, Hallway Decorating, Drive-in Movie (Ratatouille), Mangeant, Razzle Dazzle Football, Pie-eating Contest, Pepfest, Tailgate before the football game against Stillwater, and the Homecoming Dance. Anders Bandt (12), who’s talent was solving a Rubik’s Cube while painting with his feet, was crowned winner of the Mangeant. Wednesday was the razzle dazzle tournament. Students of all grades came out to compete against each other at Mustang Stadium. Bjorn Eggen (10) won the pie-eating contest against some fierce competition! Seniors Matt Meloch, Ben Jepko and Daniel Murray were the pepfest MCs. The pepfest included the guy/girl dance, captain’s parade, a unicyclist, and a tap/pointe dance-off between Trinity Kuether (12) and Emily Trapnell (12). Lonely Enclave performed in the circle drive while students got food and had their faces painted before the football game. The homecoming dance, themed Enchanted Forest, set a record for attendance!

Travel Abroad - Europe Students from MVHS (Mason Marx (11), Matt Schnell (11), Robert Hairston (12)) & IHS (Mike Harelson & Nakyah Ivy) traveled to Germany, Austria & Switzerland in July with German teacher, Frau Hallenberger. Several students stayed in Einhausen to get a taste of family life prior to the tour. Here is Matt Schnell’s takeaway from his experience, “The trip was truly eye-opening and the family stay gave me a look into all aspects of everyday life in Germany. I also stay in touch with my host family and will be hosting the oldest brother next June!”
A similar trip to Germany/ German-speaking countries will be planned for Summer of 2019. Watch for informational meetings during Semester 2.
