From the Principal…. Hello Mounds View High School Families, It varies from day to day, but for the most part, it appears that spring is just around the corner with warmer, sunnier days in our immediate future. As we close the door on a sensational winter athletics and activities season, we begin to look forward to new opportunities in both the academic and co-curricular arenas. In the February edition of the Mustang Messenger, we introduced our new ReFLECT initiative. Students and staff will soon be engaging in the “trial runs” of this concept. The ReFLECT model is a collaborative effort, conceived by staff and students which will allow students access to teachers for extra assistance during the school day! Students will be able to take/re-take assessments, complete homework, ask questions of teachers, collaborate with one another, or simply catch their collective breath. These “trial runs” will take place on March 2 and March 9 and then we hope to fully implement ReFLECT in the 2016-17 school year. This break should provide our students with a well deserved respite so that they are rested and ready for the final stretch. Get to Know ‘Em Meet Shelbi Eckman My name is Shelbi Eckman and I have worked at Mounds View High School as the registrar for almost 7 years. Prior to that, I was a clerk at Bel Air Elementary for 2 years and a para there for 6 years. My duties here include enrollment and withdrawal, posting credits to the transcript, grades and report cards. I graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BA in Communication a million years ago. After that I spent several years working in the Marketing Department at Dart Transit. I stayed home with my boys until my youngest was in kindergarten. I started as a para in the Bel Air IMC and slowly took on more responsibility. I have two sons, both Irondale graduates. Ian is a senior at Columbia College Chicago, on track to graduate this May, and Jack is a sophomore in the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota. My husband and I hold down the fort in New Brighton as the boys come and go. We focus on home improvement, fitness, camping and socializing. I like riding my bike and taking pictures in my spare time.
Meet Kristin Heinz
My name is Kristin Heinz and I teach English language learners and World History at Mounds View High School. It is my 3rd year teaching here at MVHS. Before Mounds View, my teaching experiences included teaching social studies in Grand Forks, ND, Anoka and Rochester MN, teaching English as a Peace Corps volunteer in Turkmenistan, and teaching English to adult immigrants in New York. After teaching English overseas and in New York, I decided to get my Masters in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) so I could work with students new to the country. I feel very lucky for all my teaching experiences and am really happy to be here at Mounds View where I get to teach in 2 areas I feel passionate about: history and teaching English language learners. My husband, Dieter, and I have 3 children: Madeline (14), Grace (12) and Cal (9). This school year, we are hosting an exchange student from Kyrgyzstan. Her name is Kamila and she is 17. We all are getting to experience a little bit of Kyrgyz culture, which has been great. Our kids are busy with volleyball, swimming, soccer, music, and theater. My husband and I (and we’re hoping someday our kids) really love to ski, downhill and cross country, in the winter and bike, hike, and canoe in the summer. We try to travel as much as we can, especially in the summer. Our favorite places are Colorado and Montana. I love to run, read (which I try to catch up on in the summer), and cook with the kids. I have loved my time so far at Mounds View and look forward to getting to know more students, parents, and staff in the coming years.

Alpine Skiers

The Alpine team sent three individual qualifiers to the State Meet this year. Senior Captain Juliana Damberg, Senior Emily Nash, and Freshman Kaarl Damberg all finished in the top ten at the Section 7 Championship meet at Giant’s Ridge to punch their tickets to the State Championship meet, also hosted by Giant’s Ridge. For Juliana, this was her 6th trip to State, and for Emily this was her 4th time qualifying. A total of 88 boys and 88 girls qualify for the state meet each year. Our three Mustang skiers posted great individual results, all finishing in the top 20, receiving All State honors. Juliana Damberg finished 4th, tying her previous best from 2015. Emily Nash finished 19th, and Kaarl Damberg finished 15th in his first trip to the State Meet.

Nordic Ski
Nordic ski sent two individual boys to state, Captain, Jack Christianson (12) and Mark Ousdigian (11). Both finished within the top ten in a highly competitive field. Jack finished 4th overall, and Mark 9th. Their efforts meant Mounds View was the only team to have two skiers in the top ten, and this was the first time this has been achieved by the school team.

Student Wellness Speaker Series
Our final speaker in this year’s Student Wellness Series is Mounds View High School English teacher Nasreen Fynewever. The title of Ms. Fynewever’s presentation is Within the Shadow. This presentation will take place on March 14 during 6th hour. CLICK HERE for details and to sign up.
ACT Registration for Juniors
The ACT will be administered to all Mounds View High School juniors on April 19. Pre-registration for the test will be completed at Mounds View during the school day on March 29-31.
Communication Night
Join us on April 5 between 6:30-8:30 PM for Communication Night. This is a great opportunity to meet with teachers and/or deans to discuss student progress. From 6:30-7:15 PM there will be a presentation/discussion regarding Social Media 101 for parents. This will be presented by one of the Deans and an Associate Principal. General knowledge around the social media applications our students are using will be presented, as well as the issues being seen by deans and administration. There will be a question/answer opportunity about students and social media after the presentation.

Health Office News Sun Safety: Thinking Spring………....and Spring Break! Spring is just around the corner. Whether a Spring Break trip is on your horizon or you’re simply looking forward to some warmer and sunnier months here in Minnesota, this is a good time to check that sunscreen supply and remind ourselves and our teens that too much of a good thing can be harmful. Here are a few safety tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Dermatology about keeping your skin safe from UV rays: Sunscreen: It’s best to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out in the sun. And be sure to get all of the spots that will be exposed - including the ears, the nose, back of the neck, hands and feet. Sunscreen wears off, so be sure to reapply throughout the day. And a lip balm with SPF will keep those lips protected. When selecting a sunscreen, experts recommend an SPF of 15 or higher and check the expiration date as the protection wanes over time. Cover up: Grab a hat and wear some sleeves to provide a barrier from the sun. And don’t forget to protect those eyes with a pair of sunglasses that block UV rays. Watch the clock: The sun’s rays are generally the strongest during that middle portion of the day (10-4 PM). Be especially aware of sun exposure during these times…….even on a cloudy day.
Prom Let’s talk about prom, it’s right around the corner. What corner might you ask? Kellogg and Sibley, right downtown, and we don’t mean Downton Abbey. This year’s venue is historic, though, being held at the St. Paul Union Depot, built in 1917. Don’t get confused because we’re not talking about the Minneapolis Depot, you won’t need your ice skates, but you will need 2 dates. One of which we can provide for you, May 14 at 7pm, but the other date, you’ll have to find for yourself. Tickets will be sold via SchoolView Feepay (credit card) and in school (cash/check) from April 27-May 10. The Grand March is from 4-6 pm at Mounds View High School. Tickets will be sold for $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for students and senior citizens. But wait, you and your friends can volunteer for a mini grand march for the elderly at Shoreview Senior Living that will take place before the Mounds View Grand March. This is a great opportunity to reach out to people in your community and make someone’s day. If you are interested, contact lisa.colbert@moundsviewschools.org. This opportunity will allow you to reserve a spot to be first in line at the grand march at Mounds View and you can apply this event towards volunteer hours. SkillsUSA Congratulations to Lynn Nelson on her selection as the Region IV Advisor of the Year for SkillsUSA. Lynn was chosen for her dedication to the organization and many accomplishments as a career and technical educator. Lynn will be interviewed at the National Leadership & Skills Conference in June as a candidate for National Advisor of the Year.
