MVHS - HOME OF THE MUSTANGS!
From the Principal…. Hello Mounds View Families, The weather is starting to cool a bit and as we enter the month of November, many wonderful things are on the horizon here at Mounds View High School.
Our fall activity season was a very successful one and we are excited and encouraged by the number of students already registered to participate in a sport or club November 5 “How To Succeed In Business this winter. At MVHS, we encourage all students to get Without Really Trying” involved, so, if your student has not yet found an activity, (1:00 pm & 7:00 pm) have him/her inquire with their dean and/or our activities director, Mr. Madison. During the month of November, our Student Council will sponsor a food drive with all donations going to the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf. We will have orchestra concerts on November 10 and 14 and our students will perform the musical, How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying from November 3-5. Besides these outstanding student performances, MVHS will also conduct our annual fall ACT practice assessment on November 12 with the accompanying ACT strategy session/results review on November 19. In closing, because our students have probably forgotten (insert sarcasm here), remind your student(s) that school will not be in session from November 21-25! Have a wonderful and thankful month. Respectfully,
Dr. Jeffery P. Ridlehoover Principal

Get to Know ‘Em Meet Kaari Johnson My name is Kaari Johnson, and I am the Testing Coordinator here at MVHS. I have always had a passion for working with kids, but never in a million years did I expect to ever work in a school. I started off college with the intent of being a Pre-Med Bio-Chemistry major and hoped to do medical mission work. My sophomore year of college I volunteered at an elementary school and I realized that working in schools was what I was meant to do. I worked as both a Special Education Paraprofessional and a secretary with Wayzata Public Schools for 5 years. Last year I took a year vacation from the “adult-working-life” and did a bit of traveling. I lived in Sydney, Australia and San Diego, California. Upon returning, I realized I missed working in schools and was blessed with the opportunity to work here. In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my fur baby, playing soccer and ultimate Frisbee, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, watching football, camping, and doing adult coloring books. I am a major coffee addict. I love trying new foods. I also keep a large supply of candy in my office…so if you want to meet me in person, stop by whenever you would like!
Meet Ian O’Neill My name is Ian O’Neill and I teach Physical Science here at Mounds View High School. This is my first year teaching and I’m thrilled to be at MVHS. I received my undergraduate degree from St. Olaf College where I got my BA in Physics. After taking a couple education courses my senior year, I realized that I loved being in the classroom and didn’t want to spend my life in a lab or a cubicle. In order to pursue my newfound passion, I started the Master of Arts in Teaching program at Hamline University. I was lucky enough to have Hamline place me at MVHS for my student teaching last fall and I hope to be here for many years to come. When I’m not juggling everything that comes with being a new teacher, I love spending time with my wife, Martha, my family, and my friends. I also love working out and watching sports. Now that I’m no longer running competitively, I enjoy exercising in many different ways. That will include a lot of Nordic skiing this winter because I’m very excited to start as a coach for MV Nordic. Students, you should sign up!

The college application process continues for Mounds View seniors. Pay attention to early decision/action deadlines and have materials submitted in advance. If students have questions about the application process, have them talk with their deans. As many Mounds View students are applying to the University of Minnesota, note that the priority deadline for applications is December 15, 2016.
Support for Later High School Start Times This fall, parents, staff, high school students and community members were invited to participate in a community engagement process around school start times. The community was asked to answer open-ended questions online and assign stars to the thoughts of others who responded. At the October 25 School Board meeting, Thoughtexchange presented the summarized results of the community engagement process. The public engagement revealed the following: • Widespread support for later high school start times was expressed by all groups: parents, students, staff and community members. • This support far surpassed any other theme expressed, including a desire to not change start times. • The greatest concerns and questions were related to the impact on students and families, with specific con - cerns about before-and after-school activities. In response to the feedback provided by the community, the Board directed the administration to develop school start times options for consideration and review at the November 15 School Board meeting. For more information, visit www.moundsviewschools.org/starttimes.

Health Office News
Fight the Flu!
Considering a flu shot? Wondering if it’s too late? If you haven’t already, this is a great time to get an annual flu vaccine. The Minnesota Department of Health recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older get the flu vaccine each year to help protect both themselves and those around them from contracting influenza. Where can you get the flu vaccine? CLICK HERE for a tool to find a vaccine clinic near you. What is the flu? • Symptoms of illness can range in severity and are usually mild to moderate, but sometimes lead to severe symptoms and hospitalization, especially in the very young, the older population, or those with chronic ill nesses such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease. • Influenza is not the “stomach bug” that often gets confused in common conversation. • Symptoms of influenza include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, head aches, and fatigue. What can we do to help prevent the spread and keep yourself well? • Get an annual flu vaccine • Stay home when you’re sick (this goes for your student(s), too!) • Report flu-like symptoms in students to the Health Office (651-621-7104) so that we can track trends • Wash hands frequently with soap and water • Clean commonly touched surfaces (including phones, door handles, etc.) • Cover those coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your sleeve • Get enough rest, drink plenty of fluids, make time for exercise, and eat a balanced diet
Rotary Youth Exchange Program
Our local Shoreview-Arden Hills Rotary Club would like to invite interested students, currently in grades 10 or 11, to apply for a summer, family-to-family two month international exchange. In previous years, the club has been involved with sending local high school students abroad for one year, but a new Rotary exchange program now gives students the opportunity to spend two months abroad over the summer months. If your student is interested in this endeavor, please contact Dr. Ridlehoover at jeff.ridlehoover@moundsviewschools.org.

Parent Tool of the Month: Compliment Your child has one basic desire and goal: to belong and to feel significant. When your child feels encouraged, she will feel capable and appreciated and will generally act in a connected and cooperative way. When the feeling of connectedness and the willingness to contribute are stronger, a feeling of equality emerges, and your child’s goal will be self-transcending and beneficial to others (Alfred Adler). Compliments and appreciations bring us closer together “Giving and receiving compliments is an art that needs to be taught and learned” (Positive Discipline) Compliments encourage, increase self-esteem and teach recognition and respect for others. Often we focus on what our children are doing wrong. Instead, this week focus on what your child is doing right and give them a compliment. “I appreciate you being on time today, you’ve been very helpful”. “I noticed you helped your sister with her math problem”. “Thank you for setting the table”. “Your opinion mattered, nice work!” “You picked up your socks, thank you”. You will quickly take notice how the atmosphere in your home will change. Easier said than done? Giving and receiving compliments is a skill and needs to be taught and practiced. Children will learn to appreciate other members in the family instead of bickering and putting each other down. It is important for children to learn how to give compliments, it boils down to training. How do I start? Start noting the smallest or slightest positive movements in your child. If you can’t see one, find one! Then use it as an encouragement tool, “I noticed you put your dish away”. I guarantee you will slowly observe a change in behavior as your child is gaining a sense of belongingness and significance.
PAGE 11
Empowering Families (cont.) Parents Helping Parents Problem Solve (Parent Consultation Group) The Parent Consultation Group helps parents discover parenting solutions and strategies that enhance their teen’s self-discipline, responsibility, cooperation and problem-solving skills. Problem-solving is a way of identifying solutions when working through issues. The facilitator will help the parent toward looking more at solutions than at the problem by understanding the four goals of misbehavior. Once the misbehavior is understood, the parents help each other figure out strategies for working toward a solution. This process provides a fun and effective way for parents to get specific help with real problems. Parents will learn what wonderful consultants they can be to each other. During the parents helping parents problem-solving steps a volunteer presents a real problem. The group then suggests the child’s possible motivation (or ‘Mistaken Goal’) and brainstorms suggested approaches. The volunteer then chooses the approach that fits him or her, and practices it through the week. Parents report back and make adjustments, as needed, for another week, up to four weeks. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: • Learn why teens misbehave and how to respectfully encourage change in ways that eliminate most behavior prob- lems. • Learn from the participant’s own experience and solve real life problems. • Learn (and practice) how to effectively “get into your teen’s world.” • Build tools and resources to parent effectively for today’s world.
Student Council With the craziness of Homecoming week in the past, MVHS Student Council has had a quieter month of October. On October 14, seventeen student council members attended the Capital Division Fall Convention, hosted by East Ridge High School in Woodbury. This day featured a guest speaker, breakout sessions with council members from surrounding capital division schools, and even a dance to end the day. The student council members who attended came away inspired with some ideas for how to make StudCo at Mounds View even more successful. October for Student Council also means that preparations for the Halloween Dance are in full swing. We’re looking forward to seeing the creative and silly costumes that students don for the dance. All proceeds will benefit the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf, located right here in the Mounds View School District. The Ralph Reeder Food Shelf seeks to provide food assistance to individuals and families in our community, and MVHS has a long history of partnering with this organization, specifically through our annual fall Food Drive. This year’s Food Drive will be held the week of November 7-11. Both non-perishable items and cash donations will be accepted throughout the week, and prize raffles will be held to encourage student participation in this event. Student Council is looking forward to sponsoring this event and hopes that students and families will participate in partnering with Ralph Reeder through their donations! Please watch the e-news for more information about how to donate.
