JULY 1, 2020 TO JUNE 30, 2021 WHO WE ARE Since 1987, the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation has partnered with Mounds View Public Schools to support programs that reach students in all of our schools.
2020: The Year That Changed Where We Learned A Look Back with Executive Director Heather Meyer
WHAT WE DO We fund programs that have a meaningful impact on the students in the Mounds View School District. Examples of these programs include: the innovative funding of the ACT exam to juniors at no cost, increasing access to school-owned instruments (making music accessible for all families), funding of Intentional Social Interactions (a cross-cultural event which brings people together for a meal and conversation with the goal of breaking down barriers), enhancing access to materials in STEAM labs, improving access to the Laurentian Environmental Center for 5th and 7th graders and investing in the Equity Promise Scholarship Program.

2020: THE YEAR THAT CHANGED WHERE WE LEARNEDS Prior to the beginning of the 2021-21 school year, the Foundation recognized the challenges distance learning posed for so many of our students and their families. Whether it was ensuring reliable internet access or supplementing the District’s Chromebook inventory, the Foundation was committed to supporting the students of the Mounds View School District. We are proud that our support provided hundreds of families with access to reliable internet and reinforced the District’s Chromebook inventory. If there was ever a time when our ability to quickly transition our funding proved consequential -- it was the 2020-21 school year. While the pandemic challenged our educational system in countless ways, it reinforced the importance of the MVSEF’s ability to redirect resources to our students when critical needs arise. As one District staff person shared, “It was incredibly reassuring throughout the most difficult stretches of distance learning to know that the District was committed to providing resources and support to students and families. I've felt supported in the effort to provide equitable access to distance learning ever since the pandemic started, and I've seen firsthand how that support has made all the difference for so many students.”
PHOTO: CANVA
We are pleased our funding helped the staff and students persevere through the challenges of distance learning, however, we are eager to have our funding directed to a more normal set of initiatives for the coming school year. We are excited to announce our renewed support of the Intentional Social Interaction events, the Music Instrument and the Equity Promise Scholarship programs for the 2021-22 school year. Notably, these programs demonstrate our continued commitment to the Mounds View School District’s promise to ensure an equitable education experience for all students. It was a difficult year for so many, and we are very grateful for the generosity you showed when we asked for your support. Whether it was through participation in one of our virtual events, Rock the School House or Partnering for Education, or as a contributor to the annual giving or scholarship programs, you helped us sustain our support of the students in our District. Thank you for investing in the MVSEF and the students in our schools.

ROCK THE SCHOOL HOUSE: THE START OF GIVING SEASON 2020 For the past nine years, Mounds View Public School staff, district parents and community members have gathered and demonstrated extraordinary generosity through their participation in the flagship fundraising event for Mounds View Schools Education Foundation (MVSEF) - Rock the School House. Due to the Covid-19 global pandemic, the event was shifted to an “At Home Edition,” which was a welcome distraction and offered hundreds in the community the opportunity to ensure students received the support they needed in extraordinary circumstances. Rock the School House was the beginning of the Foundation’s Giving Season. The Foundation was committed to supporting the Mounds View School District's
need for resources that would ensure reliable internet access for students and the necessary technology to support learning whether at home or in school. “As the Foundation has evolved, so have the ways we have engaged our community in supporting our efforts,” said Erik Rasmussen, President of the Board of Trustees for MVSEF, as well as a graduate of the District. “Although 2020’s Rock the School House At Home Edition may have lacked the intensity of 300 people gathered in a single venue - the importance of the dollars raised had never been more critical.”

During the online event, hundreds of viewers tuned in to hear about the technological challenges students were facing during the pandemic. “There was an assumption that all students had reliable and capable internet in their home,” explained Jeff Ridlehoover, Assistant Superintendent of Mounds View Public Schools. “We found both within our District, Mounds View Public Schools, as well as our surrounding Districts and in talking to colleagues, that was not always the case.” The District staff went to work, identifying the homes that needed a literal boost. “Some of the challenges with technology were multifold, but certainly, it became an equity conversation,” said Chris Lennox, Superintendent of Mounds View Public Schools. “Making sure that all of our students have access to adequate technology and broadband, internet access, devices, spaces where they can connect and then engage with our educational staff to support them in their learning -- that was significant.”
In March 2020, the Board of Trustees determined to pivot from an inperson event to an online format.
Online event passes were available starting at just $20. Anyone who wanted to watch the program could attend for free.
An At-Home Event Kit supplied attendees with everything they needed to have a celebration, including a DIY guide.
A CLOSER LOOK
CELEBRATING AT HOME As an alternative to the in-person event experience, the Foundation partnered with local and small businesses to curate the ultimate at-home party kits to be enjoyed during Rock the School House At-Home Edition. Guests could select from a variety of kits which included Clif Family wine, Gray Duck vodka, beer from Pryes Brewing Co. or Northern Soda, not to mention tasty treats like Drew's Popcorn, Waybetter Snack Chips (Jim & Debbie Breen), Von Hanson's Gourmet Pretzels and Nothing Bundt Cakes. Included with the kits was a Celebration Guide, which detailed the schedule of events as well as the Premier and Online Auction items and rings for the DIY We've Got the Spirits Ring Toss game, presented by Edina Realty, Jim & Shelley Diffley.
A podcast was created to communicate with online guests, adding one more way to conveniently consume information.
Local business like Norther Soda supported Rock the School House with in-kind donations of product for the at-home event kits.
Lakes Orthodontists sponsored the Nothing Bundt Cakes included in the event kits.

EQUITY PROMISE
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM What is it and How Can YOU Get Involved While the pandemic may have changed where we learned and where we celebrated, it did not deter our student community from applying for scholarships through the Equity Promise Scholarship Program, an initiative of Mounds View Public Schools supported by MVSEF. What is the Equity Promise? Mounds View Public Schools established the Equity Promise Scholarship program, working with community businesses and organizations to provide local scholarships to graduating seniors? The scholarship program is aimed at reinforcing the District’s Equity Promise of supporting all students in achieving their post-secondary goals, whether at a two-year college or a four-year college or university. The District’s Equity Promise “ensures all students are prepared for post-secondary success regardless of race, class, gender or disability.” Who can qualify? All graduating seniors continuing on to a 2 or 4 year post-secondary program. The Equity Promise Scholarship Program recognizes a more broad range of students who have demonstrated success in high school through a variety of ways, including academic growth, leadership and perseverance —both inside and outside of the classroom. The program provides one-time awards to graduating seniors. How much are the awards? About 80 percent of all scholarship awards will be worth a minimum of $1,000 for a two-year college and $1,500 for a four-year college or university. www.team2052.com www.mvsef.org | 6
PHOTO: CANVA
The remaining 20 percent of awards will be worth a minimum of $500, depending on the donor. How can students apply? The Student Application includes essay questions related to leadership, perseverance and growth in one of the District's 12 Habits of Mind. The application typically opens in November. Applications must be submitted by early January 2022.
All students deserve a chance to pursue their dreams after high school. When will recipients be notified? All recipients will be notified in May. Recognition events will be held at the high schools. For more information regarding the Equity Promise Scholarship Program, please contact Kendra Eckman at Mounds View High School kendra.eckman@moundsviewschools.org or Mary Ellen Sparrow at Irondale High School -maryellen.sparrow@moundsviewschools.org Interested in supporting the scholarship program? Since 1987, the MVSEF has been a leader in philanthropic support for our students. We take great pride in this legacy and the impact we have had on students. As the Foundation has evolved, so have the ways we have engaged our community in supporting our efforts. Nearly a decade ago we launched our first fundraising event known as Rock the School House. This event has become synonymous with fun, while also becoming the primary source of our revenue. While we are proud of the success of Rock the School House and will continue to host our flagship fundraiser, we are also committed to focusing on the most strategic and sustainable fundraising tool we have - our annual giving program. The annual giving program, by essence of its efficiency, ensures a consistent revenue stream thereby allowing for the strategic direction of resources to important initiatives that impact students. The more dollars are secured through our annual giving program, the greater our ability to fund programs that influence our students' experience. The Foundation has impacted students for over three decades and we strive to continue our work for decades to come.

PARTNERING FOR EDUCATION
Community Partnerships Strengthen Our School Community Nearly a decade ago, the Foundation began offering community members two event opportunities to engage with the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation - Rock the School House and Partnering for Education Lunch. The Partnering for Education Lunch provides guests a chance to hear from student speakers from Irondale and Mounds View High School as well as a keynote message from a notable alumni. Rock the School House has become synonymous with fun and it is also one of our primary sources of revenue. Both of these events have been made possible by the generosity of our community partners through their sponsorship commitments. The more dollars we secure through community partnerships and our annual giving program, the greater is our ability fund programs.

In Spring 2020, due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions for gatherings, the Foundation held a week-long online program highlighting the needs of students who continued learning from a distance. It was then we met a student who shared his Mounds View Schools experience. It was important for the Foundation to continue the
message that our students were persevering through their daily highs and lows of distance learning, With each week, it wasn't uncommon for tech issues to arise, interrupting the learning process. The Foundation was here to get the word out: students still needed our help.
“The strength of our public school system is fundamental to an educated and skilled labor force and is connected to economic vitality, locally and regionally. Supporting the MVSEF can pay dividends - as the business community’s investment in the Foundation helps expand opportunities for the students in our schools.” Jonathan Weinhagen President & CEO Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce; and Former President MVSEF Board of Trustees

Meet Roshan Nicholas Rochus John, a freshman at Irondale High School. We visited over Zoom in February 2021 where he shared his Mounds View Schools Experience thus far. The full interview can be found at mvsef.org/roshan. "Technology issues are a somewhat large problem. Personally, I don't have bad internet, and my problems are solvable. But for some of my classmates, it's really bad. But we just keep trying and persevering through it." A tough message for any parent to hear. In addition to his distance learning experience, Roshan shared a story about one of his teachers Miss Elizabeth Cummings with the MVSEF team. “I actually took one-on-one singing lessons with Miss Cummings, who is a choir teacher at Edgewood. That was really, really good for me because it helped me with my singing over time. One of
the many reasons I miss school is just being in the environment with students and teachers. At the end of last year when we were all learning from home, Miss Cummings took our pictures and moments from throughout the year and she developed a montage with our choir’s music which was really, really satisfying to hear.” Thank you, Roshan, for sharing your story; and thank you, Miss
Cummings, for being an inspiration. We look forward to hearing from more students who will share their experiences over lunch again in Spring 2022. The Foundation has positively impacted students for over three decades and we strive to continue our work for decades to come. For more information, visit mvsef.org/PFE

LOOKING AHEAD A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Whew! The Pandemic was the horror movie none of us wanted to see and thankfully we are finally rolling the credits. It is a sense of relief to be returning to normal (or is it our new normal?). In March 2020, our world was turned upside down and the Foundation and the District had to help our students and adapt as organizations. With virtual Rock the School House and Partnering for Education events, we kept the Foundation in front of our community, and you responded with your continued support. For that, we are grateful. As we return to normal, I am excited to share that we are returning to funding District priorities that support the students in all our schools. Our focus for the next fiscal year will be on increasing access to musical instruments and renewing our commitment to the Intentional Social Interactions events and the Equity Promise Scholarship Program. Over the past few years, our funding has ensured students of all financial levels have had the opportunity to participate in band and orchestra. The gift of music is meaningwww.mvsef.org | 10

ful to students and particularly to students who previously did not have access to instruments. We are proud to play a part in offering students an enriched school experience. Intentional Social Interaction
Funding our mission returns in person this fall community gatherings (IZIs) were growing prior to the pandemic as part of the District’s commitment to engaging families who traditionally have been underrepresented. We are excited to help IZIs return this school year. Intentional Social Interaction community gatherings provide underrepresented families the opportunity to engage with District staff and community members. What enhances these events is the opportunity to gather around a meal, which often has diverse menu selections, but most
importantly, has proven to foster a more open and meaningful dialogue. 2020 also focused a spotlight on the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in our community and the Foundation is proud to continue its funding of the Equity Promise Scholarship Program. We are proud to support students as they graduate from the District and pursue postsecondary opportunities of their choice. Beginning Fall 2021, we are excited to announce that we will be hosting both Rock the School House and Partnering for Education in person. We are also pleased to be adding a fall luncheon that will allow us to showcase the significant transformation in a school as well as hear firsthand from District leadership. We hope you can join us for one of our fall events. As many of you are aware, I am a proud graduate of the District, as are my daughters. In addition, my mom taught in the district for many years. My family has reaped the benefits of the quality education the District provides and I am honored to serve as a trustee of the Foundation. I am humbled by the opportunity to serve and the generous support that each of you have provided over the years. Thank you and know that you are making a difference for the students in the District.

BOARD THOUGHTS
For more than 30 years, the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation has had the pleasure of working with so many talented and dedicated board members. This year, we announce the retirement of the following trustees from the board: Jim DeMay, Shelley St. Marie Diffley, Jen Lodin and John Peck. The Foundation extends its appreciation for the contributions of these alumni and community leaders, and we extend a heartfelt 'thank you' for their unwavering support. Here, Jim, Shelley, Jen and John share their departing thoughts.
Jim DeMay MVSEF Board of Trustees 2015 - 2021
Jen Lodin MVSEF Board of Trustees 2015 - 2021
"I believe the ACT for all has had one of the biggest impacts for all of our students. Having each student have access to this nationally standardized assessment during a regularly scheduled school day and in a familiar environment continues to be a game changer for our students' success!"
www.mvsef.org | 12
"Fundraising is hard work and it is the most important thing we do. For incoming community members who are considering joining the MVSEF Board of Trustees, the job is more about creating funding mechanisms than spending funds. Get your contact list ready. Serving on the Board is a great way to support the public school system and our students."
Shelley St. Marie Diffley MVSEF Board of Trustees 2015 - 2021
"It has been an honor to serve as a board member on the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation and I highly recommend others to consider a term. Our diverse school district is consistently rated as a Top 10 district in the state because of the hard work, dedication, and commitment of each member of our community. While serving on the board, I learned there are certain expenses a school district cannot pay for - even when they benefit and make a huge impact on our student body. In those situations, the Foundation was able to step in and financially support unique and creative initiatives, acting like a research and development arm for the District. Continued excellence can be achieved when we work together and raise money to make gifts where needed within our District."
"The MVSEF Board of Trustee's partnership with the Mounds View School District allows us to fulfill our mission and leverage operational efficiencies. Through the varied expertise of our Board of Trustees, we are able to make a meaningful impact in the lives of students in our District. We welcome community representation and encourage you to email info@mvsef.org to learn more about serving as a trustee for the Mounds View Schools Education." Heather Meyer, Executive Director Mounds View Schools Education Foundation
John Peck MVSEF Board of Trustees 2015 - 2021
"During my time on the board, the area of funding that I think made the biggest impact on our students was the STEAM carts initiative. This was one of the most impactful areas of funding, thinking that these carts likely spurred numbers of students towards STEAM careers. Serving on the Board is a FABULOUS way to show your support for our local schools and a chance to meet great people."

STARLAB UPDATE Bet you're wondering, 'What ever happened to the new StarLab?' In February 2020, MVSEF announced its first capital campaign: Mission StarLab. Amidst a global pandemic, the community rallied to raise the funds needed to replace the District's StarLab. In August 2020, the new StarLab arrived to Mounds View Schools - where it is patiently waiting for its debut in the 2021-22 school year.
SPECIAL THANKS TO
The Mounds View Schools Education Foundation declared 'Mission Accomplished' in June 2020 when all of the dollars were officially raised for the replacement of the District's StarLab. This August, one year after the NEW StarLab's arrival, District staff will finally meet this new galactic apparatus. As part of our commitment, the Foundation will welcome a trainer from StarLab to instruct our teachers on how to get the most from the new StarLab and its amazing capabilities. We are so excited for elementary students to explore the galaxy when StarLab launches this coming school year. Thank you again to our investors who made this all possible. We think you are simply 'out of this world.'
