JASPER TURNS TO NEW COACH AFTER BACK-TO-BACK LOSING SEASON By Johnathan Bentley

Bryan Moore was brought to Jasper High School to turn the Vikings into winners. Since he was hired in January, Moore has hit the ground running - adding six new coaches, including former Alabama star Tyrone Prothro - while bringing an air of excitement to a team coming off its worst season in more than two decades. Even the Jasper logo on the helmet has changed going into 2018 with the Vikings head going back on the helmet. There are more changes. For the first time in five years, Jasper drops to Class 5A and adds Cullman back to the football schedule. Also, for the first time Dora will be in the same region as the Vikings. The teams play the region opener in Week 3. “We are here to change a 3-7 record,” said Moore, who spent the last three years as the head coach at Eufaula High School. “We got a great group of seniors to lead the program. I’m excited about the year.” Jasper was dominated on both sides of the ball last year, averaging just 14.7 points while giving up 31.1. Injuries, and one of the toughest regions in Class 6A took its toll on Jasper. The Vikings lost their last four games, getting outscored 155-48 during the losing skid. It didn’t take Moore much time to locate one of Jasper’s biggest obstacles size and strength. Moore hit the problem head on, hiring the school’s very first strength and conditioning coach in Phillip Bailey, who will also serve as the Vikings’ offensive coordinator. “The point we had to make was we had to gain weight and get strong,” Moore said. “We wanted to feed the kids as much as we possibly could. The goal was to get heavier. If I weigh 300 pounds and

(my opponent) weighs 300 pounds, then my technique comes into play, but if I’m down 100 pounds to a guy - like in the Clay-Chalkville game and some of the games in the past - that’s just not going to happen for you. Over time that weight is going to win and you are going to lose that trench. You are going to lose the line of scrimmage. Whoever wins that line of scrimmage is going to win the game. It doesn’t matter what scheme you run, if you don’t knock them backwards, you are not winning.” Moore’s plan has worked with players gaining an average of 20 pounds since January, and he said he could tell a difference in the spring game against Carver. “It’s been a huge difference,” senior lineman Micah Woods said of the coaching change. “The mind set has changed since the new staff came in. I feel like we are more of a family, and we all play together. We are one. Last year, it was a lot of missing pieces.” Moore inherits a team with 14 seniors, who only two seniors on defense. Senior MIchael Crear, who missed more than half of last year due to suspension, is back as the Jasper quarterback. A dual threat, Crear was the Vikings’ offensive leader through the early part of last season. Without Crear, the Jasper offense struggled mightily down the stretch. “When he pulls down the ball and runs, he’s a difference maker. He’s a game changer. As you could see in the Austin game and Hueytown game, he took over,” said Moore, who spent the offseason working on Crear’s passing attack. “I like to throw the ball and I told him, ‘You’re going to be a passer.’ This spring and summer, I told him to throw without moving out of the pocket. In the 7 on 7 (camps) he’s been great.” Junior Kaden Shelton will start at

schedule: Jasper makes the move from Class 6A to Class 5A for the 2018 season. The Vikings struggled in one of the toughest Class 6A regions in the state each of the last two seasons, placing sixth both years. Jasper opens the season on the road with its first meeting against rival Cullman since 2013. In Week 3, the Vikings make the trip to Dora for their first ever region matchup. The home opener comes in Week 4 on Sept. 14 vs. Corner. Only two teams in the region had winning records last year - Dora (9-3) and West Point (6-5).

overview: From the coach, to the classification, even down to the helmet, there will be plenty of changes for Jasper entering the 2018 football season. Coach Bryan Moore takes over a team that struggled on both sides of the ball last year. The seven wins over the last two years is the worst two-year stretch since 1993-94. The move to Class 5A puts the Vikings into a wide-open region with no clear favorite. Jasper lost its top two tacklers and its running back for 2017, but returns play-maker Michael Crear at quarterback. Kaden Shelton looks to carry the load on the ground. At his previous stop, Moore was able to turn around the Eufalua program in short order, taking a 5-6 team and going 9-3 in his first season, winning a playoff game.

running back. “The big thing with Kaden first is take care of the football. He’s going to have to carry the load for us primarily. “We’ve also got Manny Havis who will help a lot. Kaden (5-toot-10, 215 pounds) is our bigger back and Manny (5-7, 160) is our smaller back. Cam Lambert and Trayvon Stewart will give us some depth there. What’s different about Jasper is that Michael (Crear) will help with that too. He’s going to take some of those carries away. We don’t want him to carry the ball 25 times in a game, but if we need a first down, he can run,” said Moore, adding that Ben Bonner, Reed Lum and Kennedy Gomez will see time at fullback. Moore brings a pair of new coordinators to Jasper with him. “Coach Bailey came with me from Eufaula. I hired him last June. I coached him in high school. He’s done a really good job. We are philosophically the same. He’s the play caller. He was an offensive coordinator in college for five years. His offenses have really scored a lot of points,” Moore said of Bailey, who coached five years at Maryville College, a Division III school in Tennessee. “Will McDaniel is the defensive coordinator. He’s coming from West Limestone. He’s been a longtime coach and has a lot of experience,” he added. At West Limestone, McDaniel guided a defense that allowed 20 points per game over the last three years combined, helping the Wildcats reach the playoffs all three years. ‘We’ve also got a lot of veterans on the staff like Darius Gilbert and Tyrone Prothro. They both have a wealth of knowledge. I’m just really excited about our staff,” Moore said.  •

DORA LOOKS FOR A FOLLOWUP TO 2017 SUCCESS By W. Brian Hale

It took the Dora Bulldogs just one year to break a two-season span of disappointing losses and discontent among fans. In 2017, Dora opened the Bart Lockhart era with a 9-3 season, complete with a trip to the second-round of the Class 4A playoffs and plenty of postseason accolades for the head coaches and his players. The Bulldogs beat chief rivals Jasper and Cordova in the same season for the first time since 2011 and suffered just two narrow loses in the regular season — by two points to state runner-up Fayette County and six points to playoff contender Haleyville. Even with a move to Class 5A, Region 7, the excitement and optimism hasn’t abated for the team and their fans, who will look to recapture last season’s magic with an even better result in 2018. “Our players have been working hard in the offseason — they’ve put forth a lot of effort everyday. We’ve still got a long way to go, but I’m really proud of the strides that we’ve made during the spring and this summer,” Lockhart said. “We had an outstanding senior group last season who were instrumental in how successful we were. With their graduation, like so many years, we have a brand new team — but to me, we’re not rebuilding. It’s about finding out what this team can do really well and how we can take advantage of those strengths as a team.” Though holes were left due to graduation from some of the decorated seniors of 2017, leadership still exists in several key areas. On defense, linebacker Andrew Gaylor, one of the top tacklers in the area, returns to anchor a defense that gave up 191 points — the lowest point 18

2018 WALKER COUNTY PLAYBOOK

total since 2011. “Though we had a great season in 2017, last year doesn’t affect this year. We still play the same and do everything we can to make sure it’s done correctly everytime,” Gaylor said. Jordan Foy will line up behind Gaylor in the defensive backfield, while playing wide receiver on offense. On the line, Parker Freeman will be the starting center and will play on the defensive line. Other top playmakers include Jamaal Harris at defensive back, Tavares Howard at wide receiver and Bubba Henderson and Anthony Dill on the line. Replacing the stellar running back combo of Caleb Danner and Achilya Dixon will be a trio of juniors — Ikea Hosea, Marcell Davidson and J.C Collins. Tyler Goodwin and Averiun Berry will compete for the quarterback spot. Although five-year starter an AllState kicker Jack Spradlin has moved on to the college ranks, younger brother Brady Spradlin’s work has been lauded by Lockhart. Although the schedule for Dora in Class 5A, Region 7 brings change, most opponents are teams that the Bulldogs have faced recently. In region play, Hamilton makes the move with Dora, with Jasper and Corner moving from non-region to region opponents. Both West Point and Russellville — teams Dora hasn’t played in several years — are in the region, as are two teams Dora will face for the first time, Hayden and Lawrence County. The annual rivalry contest with the Cordova Blue Devils opens the season, this year as a non-region game, Carbon Hill hosts Dora this year and Fayette County, a region opponent last season, closes the season as a non-region game.

coach: Bart Lockhart, 21-13 overall 9-3 at Dora (starting second year)

players to watch: LB/FB Andrew Gaylor WR/DB Jordan Foy C/DL Parker Freeman OL Bubba Henderson DB Jamaal Harris

key losses: RB Caleb Danner RB Achilya Dixon DL Chance Thompson DB Cole Hargrove K Jack Spradlin

schedule: The transition back to Class 5A won’t be easy in terms of the schedule — both in Region 7 and non-region play. Dora opens the season against archrival Cordova, then travels to a much-improved Carbon Hill squad. In week 3, the Bulldogs open region play against another archrival, Jasper. Pivotal region contests also await at Hamilton, at Corner, at West Point and at home against Hayden. Dora closes the season against Fayette County at home, which advanced to the Class 4A state championship game.

overview: The Bulldogs made a big splash in Lockhart’s first year at the helm, but now have to deal with tougher competition at the Class 5A level. Though graduation costs the team several team leaders, the return of many prominent juniors and seniors will allow Dora to reload more than rebuild. Watch for the Bulldogs to get stronger as the season progresses, as the team grows accustomed to Class 5A play and new leaders emerge at running back. A second-consecutive postseason berth could be in the cards.

“When it comes to the new schedule and the move for reclassification, we’re the smallest school in Class 5A, but we’re not going to waste time thinking about complaining about things we can’t control. We’re simply going to have to find a way to compete at a Class 5A level, as no one is going to spot us two touchdowns because we’re the smallest,” Lockhart said. “We have to find a way to be better and prepare for each opponent with the same energy and enthusiasm, regardless of who they are.”  •

CORDOVA HOPING FOR A BOUNCE-BACK SEASON By Johnathan Bentley

Cordova has a new look for 2018. Not only do the Blue Devils have to replace their top offensive playmakers from last year, Cordova also faces a more manageable non-region schedule with Pleasant Grove, Mortimer Jordan and Munford making way for the likes of Hamilton and West Point. Though the team loses starting quarterback Demetrius Kirk, running back Javion Hill and receiver Kolbi Fuqua - an Auburn signee - Cordova coach Jimmy Gay says this season is no rebuilding year. “It’s Cordova football and we expect to win no matter who we have out there, Gay said. “Every year is different. You can’t bank on anything in high school football. You kind of know what you have, but you really don’t know until they get into the fire. We have a process that we go through. We workout and prepare through the offseason. Now we see if that preparation and amount of work they put in is going to pay off.” Cordova got off to a slow start in 2017, losing its first three games by an average of 34 points. The team bounced back with three straight wins and earned a playoff spot thanks to a late-season region win over Hamilton. The team finished 4-7, after winning 32 games its previous three years. This season starts with a road game at arch rival Dora, which was in the same region as the Blue Devils each of the last two years. Cordova will find out where it stands in the region pecking order early on with games against state runner up Fayette County and Northside in back-to-back weeks. “Northside was really good last year

and we’ve never played them before, and Fayette County is a powerhouse. We prepare for every week the same way. The mind set is that we go into every game and we are playing the best team we’ve played all year that week. We do the same thing every week,” Gay said. Thanks in part to last year’s tough schedule - which also included Fayette County, Dora and Oakman, teams that combined for 29 wins last year - Cordova struggled on both sides of the ball. The Blue Devils averaged just 16.5 points per game, the lowest average since 2002, while giving up 32.7 points per game, the second highest average since 2001. The problem started and ended on the line. “I think in the previous three or four years, that’s been the strength. It’s been our strength since I’ve been here. We kind of took a step back last year as far as both offensive and defensive line play,” said Gay, who expects to see a change this season. “I expect us to dominate the line of scrimmage. You can’t win big games without dominating the line of scrimmage. It doesn’t matter if you have the best athletes on the field or not. We are going to have a good set. I think that will be one of our strengths this year, the offensive and defensive line.” Among the linemen returning are Preston Busby, who had 53 tackles and six sacks last season, and Javon Bridges (37 tackles, one sack). Sophomore linebacker Ashton Nash (74 tackles, two forced fumbles) also returns as well as linebacker Aiden Gay (49 tackles, one

schedule: Cordova drops three of its toughest opponents off the schedule this season - Mortimer Jordan, Pleasant Grove and Munford - while adding Dora, Hamilton and West Point as non-region opponents. Dora returns to its slot in the season opener after competing in the same region as the Blue Devils each of the last two seasons. Cordova plays three Walker County schools this season, Dora, Oakman and Curry. Cordova has beaten the Wildcats each of the last four seasons. The Blue Devils play four consecutive home games in the middle of the season and close with three straight road games, including key region matchups with Oak Grove and Haleyville.

overview: Cordova has counted on the trio of quarterback Demetrius Kirk, receiver Kolbi Fuqua and running back Javion Hill for most of its offense over the past two seasons. All three are gone heading into 2018, leaving the Blue Devils relying on new faces at key spots on both sides of the ball. The Blue Devils will be in the mix for their fifth straight trip to the playoffs despite Fayette County, last year’s Class 4A state runner coming up in Week 4. Cordova will find out where its stands over the first six weeks with tough games against Dora, Fayette County, Northside and Oakman on the schedule. The final three region opponents combined for 11 wins last year. The Blue Devils have made the playoffs each of the last four years.

sack). Nash had a season-high 13 tackles in last year’s win over Oakman. “We are counting on everybody. My philosophy is everybody has a role to play on the team. It doesn’t matter if it’s the trainer toting water out there for the kids, they’ve got a role. We’re looking for kids to fulfill that role. They have to understand they are the ones that make the impact. We want every single kid to make an impact. Overall, as far as amount of playing time, most have played and been in the fire,” said Gay, who added that he and his players welcome the pressure that comes with being part of a tradition-rich football program. “We talk to our young men all the time about being held accountable. I want that pressure. These young men, they welcome it. I believe when you are a competitor and champion, you welcome it.” His players believe a bounce-back season could be in store. “I feel we will do what Cordova football does, win as much as we can and play as hard as we can. That’s what we are taught. We’re a team and we stick together,” senior Colton Hart said. “We can be as good as we want to be. If we go out there and work hard and play hard, I think we can go a long way,” senior Jolan Patmon added.  •

CARBON HILL LOOKS TO TAKE ANOTHER STEP FORWARD By Johnathan Bentley

The Carbon Hill football program is used to certain expectations. Positive expectations? That’s new. Carbon Hill has made strides since Scott Curd came back to his alma mater as head coach two years ago. The Bulldogs not only won three games last year, their highest win total since 2006, but they were a few plays away from notching two more wins. Another step forward is expected this season as the team returns play-makers on both sides of the ball, an experienced roster and the bulk of its coaching staff. “I like the direction the program is going,” Curd said. “The first thing I said when I got here is that it’s nobody’s fault where the program is right now, but we’ve got to fix it.” The Bulldogs are on their way to accomplishing that goal. Carbon Hill closed the 2017 season on a high note with a 44-21 rout of rival Curry. That victory carried into the spring, which ended with a big win over Berry in the spring game. “The last game of the year last season is one of the top 10 of my career. Watching the joy that those guys had, the student body rushing the field - that’s what high school sports is supposed to be about,” Curd said. “The kids believe in the vision we’ve set forth for them. They’ve bought into the things we do. I think they’ve got themselves primed for a season that we hope is going to be memorable for our program. There is a lot of optimism and a lot of expectations. These kids wanted to change things at Carbon Hill. They didn’t like being the butt of jokes. They’ve taken steps to change that.”

With returning players like quarterback Jon Michael Madison, receiver Carson McGinnis, linebacker Alex Atkins and linemen Jev Windham and JD Gilbert, along with experience at almost every position - 21 of the 22 positions return players - there is postseason talk at Carbon Hill - for the first time in more than a decade. Atkins led the area in tackles and was a first-team All-State selection while McGinnnis was an honorable mention All-State pick at receiver for the second straight season and has 103 receptions over that span. “For once we have a lot of guys coming back who played a lot of football. When everybody knows each other and knows what’s going on, it makes things that much smoother. The number of guys who have started at least one game is probably around 25. There is a buzz around the community and around the school,” Curd said. “Now we are at the point to where there is serious talk of contending for a playoff spot. To continue to have expectations, you’ve got to meet them. We are looking forward to meeting the expectations that haven’t been with this program in a long time.” Windham has noticed a change in Carbon Hill. “You can definitely tell out in the community that everybody has our back. It feels like a whole different Carbon Hill. They are looking forward to great things. They all tell us that this is our year,” Windham said. Carbon Hill’s improvements were across the board in 2017. The team registered its highest point total since 1999

The Bulldogs open the season with a pair of non-region home games against Good Hope and Dora before playing their first region game at Greene County. Carbon Hill plays three region games before an off week, followed by four more region games before the season finale at rival Curry. The Bulldogs enter the season on a 20-game region losing streak. The last win came against Curry when the teams were both in Class 4A in 2014.

overview: Carbon Hill took a step forward in Scott Curd’s second season, winning three games - the most wins since 2006 - and coming a few plays away from going 5-5. The team carried momentum into the offseason with a blowout win over Curry to end last season. The Bulldogs return plenty of talent, from last year’s team that averaged 23.6 points per game, the highest average since 1999, including offensive play makers Jon Michael Madison (quarterback), Carson McGinnis (receiver), Brandon Scoles (running back) and defensive leaders Alex Atkins (linebacker) and Jev Windham (lineman). Carbon Hill can make a statement with an early region win.

and allowed the second fewest points since 2006. “Coach (Chavis) Williams, with our strength and conditioning program, does an excellent job with them. That’s one reason the program has taken the strides it has,” Curd said, also noting that having the same head coach for a third straight year has helped stabilize the program. “Just getting continuity is first. I was the seventh coach in 15 years.” The schedule has its hurdles with Lamar County and Hale County entering a region that already includes No. 3 Gordo and perennial playoff teams Oakman and Winfield. The non-region schedule features Good Hope, Dora and Curry. The season opens with back-to-back home games vs. Good Hope and Dora before the region opener at Greene County. Carbon Hill dropped a pair of close region games, Greene County and Montevallo, by a total of 12 points last year. The Bulldogs look to be on the winning end of those close games in 2018. “Each week is going to be a battle. We’ll have to be ready to play. We play great teams and great coaches each week,” Curd said. “The vision we have is to play at Bryant-Denny or Jordan-Hare (sites of the championship games) one day. We are always pushing toward that. What we want to do every day is something that gets us a little bit closer to that.”  •

WILDCATS PURSUE MORE SUCCESS IN HASTINGS’ 10TH SEASON By W. Brian Hale

Mark Hastings took over as the head coach of the Oakman Wildcats in 2009. After two seasons where Hastings built the program from the ground level, Oakman has become a product of stability — averaging eight wins a season, while recording at least one playoff victory over the last seven seasons. Although some vital leaders were lost from the 2017 campaign to graduation, the Wildcats are expected to be a playoff contender once again in 2018 in Class 3A, Region 4. “Last year we had a very tough schedule — this year won’t be any different. This season, our team will be fielded by a lot of younger and inexperienced players,” Hastings said. “We’re also pretty thin at some positions, but I think if we can stay injury-free, we’ll have a shot at having another solid, successful year once again. Those guys that we do have returning for us will be expected to be our leaders and we’ll need them to play a very vital role. But a point of pride that I’ve taken since I’ve been at Oakman as that many of the young men who will be making their first starts this season are guys who have been in our system since they were in middle school. They know what to expect as far as the schemes and play sets we run on offense and defense, as well as the work they’ll have to do in conditioning themselves in the offseason. It makes transitions like we’ll all go through this year much easier.” One area of strength for the Wildcats is along the line, where seniors

Tadarius Thomas and Andrew Wood will look to gain their team a significant advantage in the trenches. “Playing on the line, you’ve got to have the right type of attitude to be successful. The element for us is very physical — you’re consistently taking hits on every play against other guys who are big and strong as well,” Thomas said. “Line play shows you how tough you are - I love it. There’s a lot of gratification you get from it,” Wood said. “When we open up a big hole for a back or can hold off a pass rusher to give our quarterback enough time to find an open receiver for a touchdown, it’s a special feeling.” Malachi Bridges, a running quarterback, takes over under center for the graduated Jon Avery. Christian Hubbard, a larger, physical running back — who rushed for nearly 700 years in five games before suffering an injury — returns to lead the backfield. Defensively, Oakman boasts a superb trio of linebackers in Hubbard, Logan Martin and Kaleb Pedraza — all of whom could be used as a pass-rusher at defensive end. With the Wildcats not moving from Class 3A, Region 4 for reclassification, the 2018 schedule features teams that Oakman faced last season or has faced recently. In region play, Gordo, Carbon Hill, Lamar County and Green County return on the schedule, while Winfield — who Oakman played last in 2015 — Hale County, last played in 2013, and Holt — a first-time opponent for

key losses: QB Jon Avery RB/LB Malcolm Hogue ATH Nathan Gilbreath DE Nick Moody OL/DL Niko Cooper

schedule: Oakman is one of the few area teams to stay put in Class 3A, Region 4 — though the schedule does see movement. After an opening week bye, the Wildcats begin at Curry before the region opener at Holt. Back-to-back region home games against Gordo and Carbon Hill could give an early shape to the region race, followed by the midseason non-region clash against Cordova. Oakman opens October with three key region matchups — at Winfield, then hosts Lamar Count and Hale County and finishes the month at Greene County. The Wildcats close the regular season hosting Corner.

overview: Hastings begins his 10th season at Oakman, where his teams have averaged eight wins a season and regularly made second-round playoff appearances. Hubbard, who rushed for 700 years in five games prior to injury, returns at running back. The line will be anchored by Andrew Wood and Thomas, while the defense looks strong with the return of linebackers Martin, Martinez and Hernandez at defensive back. Malachi Bridges’ development at quarterback and the emergence of receiving targets will be crucial for Oakman. Even with the tough schedule, the Wildcats should be back in the playoff hunt once again in 2018.

the Wildcats — are new additions. Both archival Cordova and Corner return to the non-region schedule, along with the Curry Yellow Jackets, who also played Oakman in 2015. “We believe our schedule is very tough. In our region, Montevallo and American Christian Academy are replaced by two great teams in Winfield and Hale County. We expect the teams that were younger over the past couple of years will be much better — with Carbon Hill definitely at the top of the list, and of course Gordo is always one of the toughest tests we’ll face,” Hastings said. “Outside of the region, Curry, Cordova and Corner are all good, capable teams that will each represent a huge test for us.”   •

CURRY MOVES TO CLASS 4A, LOOKS FOR MORE PROGRESSION By W. Brian Hale

In Phillip Smith’s first three seasons at the helm of the Curry Yellow Jackets, the program has shown consistent improvement in terms of the win/loss record and production on the field. From Smith’s initial 1-9 campaign of 2015, to a 2-8 season in 2016 and last year’s 4-6 outcome, progress has been steady — but in the case of 2017, can come in the shadow of heartbreak. The Yellow Jackets started 2017 with back-to-back shutout wins — a first in 25 years — and charged into the region schedule with great confidence. Following a disappointing 30-28 loss to Hayden, Curry rebounded with a 20-7 region victory over Springville. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets’ only other win on the season would be an 8-3 defensive slugfest over Fairview, Progress had continued for Curry, but a playoff berth remained an elusive goal. Undeterred, Smith and his team are ready to take the next step towards a winning record and a postseason spot — this year in Class 4A, Region 5 following reclassification. “We’re looking forward to the new season and play in the new region. As with any year, there’s a lot of optimism and I felt like we turned a corner last season with the way our guys came out and worked hard. We won some ball games and had a chance to have a really good year — there were several games that were lost near the end. A play here or there could have led to a seven or eight win season,” Smith said. “The guys fed off of the success we were able to obtain and also took the closeness of those losses as motivation. We had a

really good offseason and we saw our guys’ work ethic shine again. Hopefully we’ll be able to go out on Friday nights and put a good product on the field.” Graduation led to a number of leaders departing the team, but Smith feels his senior players – most of whom were freshman when he took over as head coach — will be decisive with their play on the field and as mentors to the younger team members. Colton Burton is expected to be a top playmaker for the Yellow Jackets, lining up at running back, slot receiver and even quarterback in some packages on offense, while playing safety on defense. Tristan Jones will also line up at running back on offense, while playing linebacker on defense. Austin Patton is tabbed as the team’s fullback and will line up at linebacker on defense. “All three of these seniors will be on the field 80 to 90 percent of the time and we’re hoping they’ll lead us in the right direction,” Smith said. In his time with the team, Burton has seen a vast difference in the attitude within the program and believes the Yellow Jackets are extremely capable of achieving their goals. “For a few years, it was tough and there was a lot of struggling. But our attitude and mentality has changed. Everyone is starting to click and things have gotten much better,” Burton said. Jones said the Curry secondary should be a strength for the team this season, with cohesion playing a large role in the group’s effectiveness. “I feel we’re going to be strong in the secondary — there’s a definite edge in experience within the defensive backs

schedule: The Yellow Jackets open up the season with two formidable opponents in annual playoff contenders Addison and Oakman before beginning Class 4A, Region 5 competition at Oak Grove. Last year’s Class 4A state runner-up Fayette County follows before a non-region contest with Class 3A Hanceville. Curry ends the region schedule with 3 out of 4 games against playoff teams — Haleyville, Cordova and Northside and concludes the regular season hosting the Carbon Hill Bulldogs.

overview: Despite missing the 2017 playoffs by a few points and plays, progress continued in every category for Curry since Smith’s first year as head coach. The stable of running backs and key linemen who helped pave the way for much of the success have graduated — but new rushers in the backfield in Burton and Patton should keep the ball moving. The line will have new faces and depth will be a question, but several candidates had good offseasons. Moon emerged as the front-runner at quarterback, but could face some competition for the spot. The defense should be the strength of the team, with plenty of experience in the linebacking corps and defensive backfield. There may be no tougher two-game start in the area than the Yellow Jackets’ gauntlet against Addison and Oakman. Outside of the midseason bout with Hanceville, every week will be a challenge for Curry.

than in the line. We’re upperclassmen and have been in the tough drives through these three seasons — we’ll have it handled,” Jones said. Graduation hit Curry hard along the line, where just one starter returns. Smith indicated the line’s progression and quick adaptation to the weekly grind of a starting role will be a key to success. Senior John Moon could get the nod at quarterback, but could have strong competition at the spot from Burton, transfer Luke Tidwell and Luke Smith.  •

EAGLES MOVE TO 2A, AIM FOR BOUNCE-BACK

Date

By W. Brian Hale

The 2017 campaign brought a whirlwind of ups and downs for the Sumiton Christian Eagles. Hoping to continue the success of the 2016 season that produced a 9-3 record and the program’s first second-round playoff appearance since 2004, the Eagles started 2017 with a 3-1 mark and looked to be cruising to another postseason berth. It would be Sumiton Christian’s high-water mark. The Eagles lost five consecutive games and missed the playoffs. Head coach Mike McCarty left his alma mater after one season with the program, leading to the hiring of Bart Black, a first-time head coach, to take the helm. Sumiton Christian will now look to bounce back in the shadow of a move from Class 1A to Class 2A, Region 5 — with a change in schedule that will prove more challenging for the Eagles. For Black, who spent last season coaching at Dora, the opportunity to guide the Eagles was one he couldn’t pass up. “I was very fortunate to land the job at Sumiton Christian — it’s where I wanted to be. It’s place that I love and really care about — a place I want to go and stay,” said Black, who previously held coaching positions in other sports in 10 years with the Eagles. “I’m looking forward to this season, though I’m not sure how it’s going to go as I’m not familiar with most of the teams that we’ll play. But I’m not shying away from the challenge and we’ll certainly work hard to meet each test.”

Black faces a major rebuilding project with the departures of several top contributors from the 2017 squad, including one of the school’s most prolific rushers, Tanner Talley, and 1,700 yard passer Chase Crane. One leader returning for the Eagles is fullback/linebacker Garrett Gable. For Gable, who ranked in the Top 10 in tackles for the Daily Mountain Eagle coverage area, being successful when being reclassified involves intense study of opponents in the film room. “You really have to keep up with what teams are doing on film. We’ve had to change up our schedule every two years due to reclassification and we get used to the teams we play. We’ve played Meek year after year and we’ve gotten used to that style, but a scheme can change as coaches and coordinators come and go,” Gable said. “I think the most important part in adapting is watching film and how seeing how each team plays. You might see some similarities in teams on the schedule, but you’ll usually have more differences than similarities.” Another player who have been tabbed as a leader by Black is Jeremy Brown, who is expected to fill the running back spot, as well as play some at slot receiver. Black said his offensive/defensive lines have quality players but are “thin in numbers.” Crane’s departure could lead to the early elevation of ninth-grader Jack

AT A GLANCE 2017: 4-6 overall, 2-4 in Class 1A, Region 7 (fifth)

coach: Bart Black, first year as a head coach

players to watch: DL Garrett Gable WR/LB Jeremy Brown QB/DB Jack Gable

key losses: RB Tanner Talley WR/DB Trevor Stokes WR/DB Peyton Alexander OL/DL Luke McDonald OL/DL Grant Shepard QB Chase Crane

schedule: The switch back to Class 2A, Region 5 won’t be easy. The Eagles travel to Class 3A Hanceville in the opener, then face Class 1A playoff contender Decatur Heritage before opening region play against Sulligent — which went 12-2 in 2017 and made a fourth round playoff appearance. Contests with Cold Springs and Southeastern should provide room for growth before the midseason non-region matchup with the Meek Tigers. Playoff contenders Tarrant and Aliceville await Sumiton Christian in region play, which ends at home against Winston County. The Eagles close the regular season with Victory Christian.

overview: Bart Black takes over the reigns at Sumiton Christian in his first head coaching job as the program moves back to Class 2A. Black hopes to bring stability to the program with 2018 serving as his foundation season. He is the third Sumiton Christian head coach in three years and the fourth in five years. Replacing Tanner Talley, one of the school’s most prolific rushers, will be a tough test and a key to the season. Jeremy Brown looks to fill in as the Eagles’ top running back. If Sumiton Christian can shore-up the deficiencies early in the season and avoid injuries and let downs against the more winnable games on the schedule, securing a playoff spot is not out of the question.

key number: 0 The number of times annual region opponent Southeastern has recorded a win against Sumiton Christian. The teams have played every year since 2012.

Gable to lining up under center. Sumiton Christian’s new Region 5 schedule features just one returning opponent — Southeastern — though familiar faces dot the slate overall. The Eagles faced new region opponents Cold Springs and Tarrant in 2015, Aliceville in 2009 and Winston County in 2003. Sulligent is the only region opponent that Sumiton Christian will play for the first time. In non-region action, Decatur Heritage and Meek — who were both region opponents last season, return to the schedule, as well as Victory Christian. The Eagles open with Hanceville in Week 1 in a non-region bout. “Week-in and week-out, we’ll treat every game as the same and prepare to play well on every play,” Black said. “We’ll let the scoreboard take care of itself regardless if it’s a region or rivalry game.”  •
