Preserving Alabama’s natural resources starts in our backyard. Did you know longleaf pines are home to roughly 120 endangered or threatened plant and animal species? That’s why Alabama Power is working hard to help them grow. We’ve teamed up with partners across our state to preserve the natural resources that make Alabama a great place to put down roots – especially if you’re a longleaf pine. AlabamaPower.com/Environment

There will be plenty of new faces on the sidelines at Walker County Schools this season with four schools hiring new head football coaches — Carbon Hill, Cordova, Curry and Dora all made changes for the 2021 season. Oakman’s Ryan Hall, entering his third year, is now the dean of head football coaches in Walker County. Sumiton Christian’s David Powell and Jasper’s Philip Bailey are both entering their second seasons.
Johnathan Bentley SPORTS EDITOR
THIS YEAR’S NEW COACHES Mark Cochran, Carbon Hill Cochran returns to Carbon Hill after a successful run as a middle school coach at Collins-Riverside Middle School in Tuscaloosa. His previous varsity head coaching experience came at Holy Spirit. He led the Saints for two years, 2017-18. Cochran started his coaching career at Carbon Hill in 1995 as an assistant coach. Shane Smothers, Cordova The Blue Devils bring in veteran Shane Smothers as their fourth head coach in as many years. Smothers, a Curry High School graduate, is back in the county as a head coach for the second time. He also led Walker High School in 2005-06. He’s most recently served as the offensive coordinator at Muscle Shoals High School. Chavis Williams, Dora Williams is back at his alma mater after spending the last two years as the Carbon Hill head coach. Williams was a first-team All-State lineman as a senior in the 2006 season under coach Johnny Wright. At Carbon Hill, Williams led the Bulldogs to their first playoff appearance in two decades in 2019. DJ Emerson, Curry Emerson takes his first head coaching job after being an assistant for 10 years, including seven at Walker/Jasper High School, two at Shelbyville High School in Tennessee and last year at Cordova where he was the offensive coordinator. Q & A WITH HEAD COACH PHILIP BAILEY BY JOHNATHAN BENTLE Y
Jasper’s Philip Bailey enters his second season as the Vikings’ head coach. Jasper faces a gauntlet in 6A, Region 6 again this season. Q: How would you define a successful season this year? A: I just want this team to compete at the highest possible level it can. I’m not going to sit here and spit out a record and say that if we win X number of games that’s successful. You can’t define it that way. Yes, this is always about wins and losses, and what’s on that scoreboard, but it’s bigger than that. I think we’ve made a lot of strides as far as coming together as a team. We’ve got a long way to go, but I do think we are headed in the right direction. If we continue to get better, be the best versions of ourselves, compete at a high level and do everything that we can do to put a product on the field that Jasper is proud of, you can define that as success. Q: What can Jasper fans expect to see on the field this season? A: You are going to see a football team that you can be proud of and that’s going to play hard. What we talk about around here is toughness, humility and effort and I think this team exemplifies that. They are buying into that. We are growing and coming together. I think you will see a team that competes at a really high level. Q: What are some of the positives you’ve seen from your team? A: They’ve really come together as a team. I think our level of execution is better. We’ve got nine guys coming back on offense. All those linemen are back. There are three seniors up there. We will be bigger and hopefully more physical up front. The positives are the kids. We’ve got some experience back on offense and on defense we’ve got some opportunities for guys to step up and get their first reps under the lights. Q: What’s great about the Jasper community? A: Jasper is tremendous. There are so many good people here. Ultimately, it’s the people that make a place. There are so many people that want to help, want to be involved, want to invest in our kids. They know our kids. They know that Kevon Samuels is No. 6 and plays receiver. They know that Spencer Rosenfeld is No. 10 and plays quarterback. They want to talk about football. They get behind this team and support this team and they are here for us. There is a lot of community involvement here. This is a really good job in relation to the community and support. They love the Vikes and we are certainly thankful for them. Q: What’s your favorite part of coaching? A: The relationships. Friday nights are great and the game days are special. You only get 10 guaranteed opportunities in the year to compete. That’s what makes football different. Game days are special, and I love those, but at the end of the day we are talking about 10 days versus the other 355 days. It’s relationships with the coaches and the relationships with kids you get to coach. That’s what you take away from this. Championship rings — I’ve got three and they sit in a box at my house. What you remember and what you talk about are the relationships. Q: What would a season without COVID-19 mean to the team? A: There are some rumblings that it’s coming back. Hopefully we can avoid that. We were fortunate last year that we got to play all 10 games. Fortunately for our seniors they got to do that. We want this group of seniors to have the same opportunity. We will do everything in our power to make sure that happens. You learn from everything we went through last year to not take anything for granted. Hopefully we get to play our games in front of a full stadium and have pep rallies — all those normal things.

Q & A WITH HEAD COACH CHAVIS WILLIAMS BY JOHNATHAN BENTLE Y
Dora head coach Chavis Williams returns to his alma mater after spending the last two years as head coach at Carbon Hill. Q: How would you define a successful season this year? A: Really, just getting better every week and peaking when it comes early November — peaking at the right time, and having the chance to play in the postseason. I don’t want us defined by the wins and losses. I just want to focus on each player getting better every day and every week. I feel like that would put us in a good position. A successful season to me is us peaking at the end of the year. Q: What can Dora fans expect to see on the field this season? A: They can expect to see just a lot of young men flying around the field and having fun. They can expect to see a physical football team, a well-disciplined team that’s exciting to watch. What I mean by that is doing all the little things — making the blocks on the perimeter, the receivers blocking well, guys making tackles and great special teams. Special teams is a big part of the game that’s not emphasized enough. Over here we are really big on that phase of the game because it can get you beat really quick and it also can win you games. Q: What are some of the positives you’ve seen from your team? A: Just overall, adapting to me. Since I’ve come in, they are doing what I’ve asked and more. We have guys all the time out there throwing the ball around and staying extra without anybody directing them to do that. They’ve been very receptive. The kids have been working hard. I’m excited to watch them play. I’m excited to see these young men lay it on the line every Friday and let them see that the hard work is going to pay off. How they bring this community together is a positive week to week. Q: What’s great about the Dora community? A: The support we have. We had a scrimmage open to the public at noon, in the middle of the day, back when we had our blue and gold game. Just to see the community coming out and itching to watch Dora football was incredible. They’ve always been like that. They support us in everything we do. We really love our community. We have done some service projects over the summer to give back to the community because they’ve done so much for this program. Q: What’s your favorite part of coaching? A: I’m a competitor at heart. I’ve been part of this (sport) since I was four years old. I wouldn’t know what else to do with my time. The biggest thing is the impact the kids make on me, not what I make on them. I really enjoy seeing the development of a kid from when he first steps foot into your program to when he walks out the door. It’s a big brotherhood or fraternity that no one can break up. I still talk to coaches that coached me all the way back to youth league. The relationships and camaraderie between the coaches and the players are what stands out. Q: What would a season without COVID-19 mean to the team? A: It would be really nice to not have to deal with it. Being realistic, it’s still there. We are just going to have to practice safe protocols and make the kids aware of protecting themselves and their family at all times. We are going to control what we can control. The worst part about it was you have guys who put in the time who had games taken away from them, and it was out of their control. That’s tough. At Carbon Hill (which lost three games due to forfeit), I didn’t feel like we got to finish like we wanted to.

Q & A WITH HEAD COACH SHANE SMOTHERS BY JOHNATHAN BENTLE Y
Cordova coach Shane Smothers is entering his first season as the Blue Devils’ head coach. He is Cordova’s fourth head coach over the last four years. Q: How would you define a successful season this year? A: I would say total buy-in from top to bottom, everyone involved. First of all, that’s important to me to be successful. If we have that we are on our way. It’s not about wins or losses. It’s about these kids believing in what we are doing. From start to finish fighting, clawing and competing the entire time and never ever giving up — and believing that one day we are going to be able to defeat the will of our opponents to win. We want to know that every game we gave 100 percent — everything we had. If we do that we will be successful. Q: What can Cordova fans expect to see on the field this season? A: A bunch of hungry players who want to be successful. This is the deal: we want to protect the tradition. How do you do that? We have to get back to winning. It’s not easy, but they want to. They know it’s on their shoulders. They’ve worked hard trying to do that. We’ve got legends coaching — Tim Simon, Jake Howton and Jace Cordell. They are all three state champions from this school. The players want to follow in their footsteps. The fans will see a team that’s going to make them proud. They are going to be physical and tough. When fans leave I hope they say, “Dang, those kids played hard.” We aren’t the fastest, we aren’t the biggest, and currently we’re not going to be the strongest, but we can fight and be tough. Q: What are some of the positives you’ve seen from your team? A: From day one when we had our meeting, the attention that I got from (the players) was unreal. They were very locked in. You could tell they were excited. They were dialed in from the start and they’ve been dialed in ever since. They are in the process of buying in. So just the excitement. The positive is how they’ve been focused. For the most part, the way they’ve attacked each day. Q: What’s great about the Cordova community? A: The big thing is how hungry they are. So many people in the community have established the tradition here. More than anything I’ve heard is that they would like to see kids, from start to finish, play their heart out. Since I got the job, the community has been very receptive, starting with our principal Mrs. (Alisa) Brown. She’s unbelievable. She’s a graduate of Cordova and a die-hard fan. She’s been very supportive. And I would put our quarterback club up against anybody. They are very hard-working and dedicated to doing whatever I need for the program. Q: What’s your favorite part of coaching? A: To me, it’s my love for the sport. It may be matched, but it won’t be topped. The main aspect of that is the relationship with the kids. I have five kids and I treat the team like I treat my boys. I love the game of football. I love everything about it. I love developing a coaching staff. Now I get to put together a staff that loves the kids like I do. My coaches know that this is not about me. It’s about them and about the kids. I love seeing kids be successful and having a small part of mentoring them, not just in football, but with their character, too. The relationships last forever. When I hosted midnight madness (practice), people started blowing me up. I’ve had a midnight madness at every school where I’ve been the head coach. I’ve had people from all those schools responding. It was so awesome to hear from them. To me, that’s what it’s about. It’s the greatest sport around. I love everything it represents. Q: What would a season without COVID-19 mean to the team? A: I hope we don’t go back to that because that was a headache. Right now it’s been good. Our problem right now is the contact tracing. It would be tremendous to not have to do what we had to do last year. There are so many other things to worry about, especially with the schedule we have. If we only had to focus on those guys and giving ourselves a great chance to compete against those teams without worrying about the COVID protocols, that would be great.

Q & A WITH HEAD COACH MARK COCHRAN BY JOHNATHAN BENTLE Y
Carbon Hill coach Mark Cochran is entering his first season as the Bulldogs’ head coach. He returns to the school where he started his coaching career in 1995. Q: How would you define a successful season this year? A: Success would be everyone buying in. They haven’t been good here in so long. I guess just seeing us turn the corner. A 5-5 season or a winning season would be great, but it’s not always wins and losses. That’s what we are judged on. Wins and losses are how you get hired and fired. Just turning the corner and seeing something good would be a successful season. We have to go find success to bridge the gap. That way we can get more kids out. The only pressure we have is that we want to be the best we can be. Q: What can Carbon Hill fans expect to see on the field this season? A: They will see a very enthusiastic team, a well-coached, well-disciplined team that will play really hard and play every play. We are going to coach them up. All of the coaches have worked really hard. Football is pretty simple. When it comes down to it, you have to run the football and stop the run. If you can do those things you will be competitive and be in most games. We want to be a downhill running team with the play-action pass, and be physical up front on both sides of the ball. We could surprise some teams. We could be a pretty good football team. Q: What are some of the positives you’ve seen from your team? A: Through the summer we’ve got some kids who got a lot stronger. Some jumped up dramatically on weights — squats and bench. I’ve been very pleased with the workouts. Coach Hamilton is our strength coach. He’s done a really good job with it. It was also good to have a spring with the team. That was a positive. That helped them get familiar with us. We kind of know where we are going now. We just want to do things right. Q: What’s great about the Carbon Hill community? A: The thing I’ve been pleased with is that they want their football to have success here. I guess it’s more of a basketball school now more than anything, but we could be good at everything here. We just have to work with the players. Everybody has to be on the same wavelength. Me being at the high school this year is going to help. I was at the elementary school in the spring and the kids didn’t know me. I would come in here to workouts and they were like, “That’s the coach.” You don’t build any kind of camaraderie that way. You don’t even see them in the hallway. Now I’m in the hallway. I might get a few more kids out because of that. Q: What’s your favorite part of coaching? A: I really like building a program. I like Friday nights and all that, because that’s when you turn them lose and play. I like fall camp. I like summer workouts. I like building it, putting it together like a mad scientist. That’s what I like. Friday nights, I look at that more like that’s pressure on coaches, but it’s the fun kind of pressure. Q: What would a season without COVID-19 mean to the team? A: It would be wonderful. I don’t know if we are going to make it, though. I was one of the ones that said we weren’t going to make it last year. I didn’t think we would finish it. I think we may be able to this year because we do have things like vaccines — some have it, some don’t. We just have to be smart. We still have to wash hands and things like that. If it’s coming back like they say I wish we could be remote. That gives you a better chance of having a season. I just wish it would go away. I really do. Last summer I was coaching in Tuscaloosa and had to deal with all of that. It was miserable.

Q & A WITH HEAD COACH RYAN HALL BY JOHNATHAN BENTLE Y
Oakman’s Ryan Hall is entering his third season as the Wildcats’ head coach. This year’s team returns veteran talent on both sides of the ball. Q: How would you define a successful season this year? A: Two years ago we had a lull against Winfield and Cordova where we lost two close games. Last year we had the lull at Vinemont. To me, I’m trying to figure out how we avoid that lull. That’s a successful season to me, playing consistent from Week 0 to the end of the season. I kind of look at it as a consistent effort over the course of the season. That’s what I’m looking for — that we are successful because we didn’t have that lull. Q: What can Oakman fans expect to see on the field this season? A: I think they will see a blue collar team that worked really hard in the offseason to be more consistent. Obviously we’ve got a ton of guys who are coming back who have played. I hope you will see a year more of growth in those guys and a year more of growth in our coaching staff. The big thing is consistency. I think you will see a more consistent team. Q: What are some of the positives you’ve seen from your team? A: The positive has been, since we started our offseason program in January to today, the work capacity has gone up. We kept them after school and we’ve worked harder this summer than we ever have. We’ve done more this summer than we ever have. We were disappointed (after playoff loss) at Fyffe. When we got back on the bus and started back to Oakman, everybody knew in that moment, this is what we have to do if we ever want to be at that level. We got back on the bus and go — “We’ve got a lot of work to do.” Q: What’s great about the Oakman community? A: There are a lot of things. Like on a Wednesday people are putting their chairs in the stadium. People love football and love the school. A lot of people in Oakman appreciate the job you do and appreciate the work the kids put in. They are very supportive and very involved. The support you get there — I don’t think there has ever been anything we needed that we haven’t gotten. Our administration is phenomenal. They provide a wonderful opportunity for our kids and coaches to do high school football the right way. It’s a unique place. Q: What’s your favorite part of coaching? A: My favorite part is the relationships you have with players — even beyond when they play for you. The coaching, while you’re in it is like a roller coaster. That’s part of the job, you get used to it. It’s not always a blast. The highs are high and the lows or low. Saturday morning after you lose a game, like we did at Vinemont, it’s sick. You don’t feel good. It’s not enjoyable. You win a game like we did at J.B. Pennington where you drive down and score at the end of the game, that’s a high point. The season is so up and down. The relationships are what I really value and get the most out of. I value that way more than winning and losing. Q: What would a season without COVID-19 mean to the team? A: Last year was a difficult, difficult time. Having that burden on your back and having to deal with all the pauses and things that went with it made it a tough year. A year without Covid means we would get to complete the season and enjoy it. We would be grateful. The main thing is for the kids. It’s been crazy. Can you imagine being 16 or 17 and dealing with this? I have no idea how I would’ve responded at that age if I had things taken away from me like they did. We would be extremely thankful if Covid was something we didn’t have to deal with this season.

Q & A WITH HEAD COACH DJ EMERSON BY JOHNATHAN BENTLE Y
Curry’s DJ Emerson is entering his first season as a head coach, inheriting a team coming off back-to-beak winless seasons. Q: How would you define a successful season this year? A: Really, wins and losses aren’t going to define us. Establishing the culture that I want to establish, having the buy-in from the players. I told them, there are a lot to things you can’t control, but you can always control your attitude and effort. If we are doing those two things and we are making strides in the right direction as far as the culture that I want to be here, it would be a success. Q: What can Curry fans expect to see on the field this season? A: I hope they see an energetic team, a positive team that celebrates the success of their teammates and an organized, more disciplined team that enjoys the game of football. What I really want them to do is celebrate each other’s success. We’re in a “me me me” society, but it’s not about me, it’s about my teammate. If we have a group of guys who are happier about their teammate scoring a touchdown instead of themselves scoring a touchdown, we will be moving in the right direction. Q: What are some of the positives you’ve seen from your team? A: The consistent group I’ve had here — their buy-in is phenomenal. Whatever I ask them to do, whether it’s picking up trash, how I want the locker room kept, what I want them to wear — they will do it. The buy-in has been great with that group. Q: What’s great about the Curry community? A: I think they are hungry. A lot of schools I’ve been in the past, — I’m not going to call any names — but you kind of get complacent a little bit. We haven’t had a lot of success here, especially in football. I think the community is hungry for success, but I think they really want to do things the right way. I really want to do things the right way and run a first class program. In my first meeting with the booster club it was, “Coach, what do you need?” Piece by piece we can get the stuff we need to be successful. Q: Who are some of the guys you are counting on this year? A: We’re going to rely on the senior group. I don’t know how much playing time they’ve had in the past, but I really like their togetherness. They want things to change. I told them the foundation of the program is going to start with them. They are always going to be remembered as that first group. So I’m going to rely heavily on them. Q: What’s your favorite part of coaching? A: Friday nights are great, but I really enjoy developing relationships with the kids over time. I’m not there yet. I’m not anywhere close to where I want to be. My favorite things are probably the team activities outside of football. Just getting to know them and them getting to know me. That’s what I look forward to and want to continue doing. I want to take the guys bowling. I want to go play Top Golf. I want to have them over to the house and cook for them. Those are things we haven’t gotten to yet that I’m looking forward to. Friday nights are great, but those team activities that are outside of football are probably my favorite. Q: What would a season without COVID-19 mean to the team? A: It’s slowly creeping back so I don’t want to talk like it’s over. We all wish it was. It would be great if we didn’t have to deal with that. I’ve been coaching for 15 years and never had to deal with anything like that. Having to wear masks on the sideline and trying to communicate with players was difficult. Then there was the distraction part of it — “Is this kid playing? Is that kid playing? Is the other team going to be able to play?” I missed two games last year because a student I had been in contact with had it. For two weeks I was quarantined and had to be away from the team. I couldn’t coach from the box. I couldn’t be at the school. I never had any symptoms. We all want things to go back to normal.

Q & A WITH HEAD COACH PHILIP BAILEY BY JOHNATHAN BENTLE Y
Sumiton Christian’s David Powell enters his third season as the Eagles’ head coach. Powell guided the team to the playoffs for the first time since 2016 last year. Q: How would you define a successful season this year? A: For me, I want it to be a positive experience for every player and I want for every player to develop and get the most out of their potential. You want your players to play their hardest. If we are getting the most out of every player and they are having a positive experience that’s a success. Q: What can Sumiton Christian fans expect to see on the field this season? A: I think they are going to see a team that is hungry. I hope they can sense that from the stands. You will see a team running around, flying to the ball, being physical and getting excited when good things are happening. I think they will get a good, positive vibe from the team. Q: What are some of the positives you’ve seen from your team? A: I think we are a hungry team. They experienced some success last year, but we had an early exit in the playoffs. We know this is a whole new year. This team hasn’t won a game or lost a game. The team has a positive attitude and is very coachable. We’ve got some experience. The seniors have been together; this is their third season. They get along well and there aren’t any conflicts in the locker room or on the field. It’s just a good atmosphere. Q: What’s great about the Sumiton community? A: We’ve got a lot of positive support. The fans are great and they travel with us through good times and bad times. They always seem to be encouraging the team and that’s very special. We’ve had some tough moments, but you always feel the fans are there encouraging the players to do their best. There are a lot of positive people around the program. Q: What’s your favorite part of coaching? A: I enjoy the relationships with the players and coaches. I feel like that I was, in a way, born to coach. I feel like I have a good eye and I think I can help the players get a little better. It’s good to see that they get better and that they enjoy that success. It’s gratifying to see that. It’s fun to win and celebrate in the locker room with the players and coaches. It’s basically what I’ve been doing my whole life. Back on the play ground in my elementary days, somebody’s got to set the rules and the boundaries. A lot of times it was me. Sometimes it was my older brother. Q: What would a season without COVID-19 mean to the team? A: That’s always lurking, especially with the numbers they are reporting and the direction it’s going. We talk about it and try to be smart. Our hope is that everyone stays healthy. We didn’t lose a game and we didn’t lose a player last year. I don’t know if it was luck or what, but we dodged it last year.
