The 2019 Walker County Playbook is a publication of the Daily Mountain Eagle. P.O. Box 1469 Jasper, AL 35502 (205) 221-2840

In an effort to continue to provide the most comprehensive coverage of high school football in Walker County, the Daily Mountain Eagle is proud to release the 2019 Southern Orthopedic/DME PrepZone Playbook, a magazine devoted specifically to the upcoming high school football season. Inside the pages of your Playbook, you will find in-depth preview stories on every team in Walker County. Along with the previews of each team, we also feature players to watch in 2019, many historic facts on each team, photographs of each team and each individual player expected to suit up this fall. The Daily Mountain Eagle is proud of the product that you are now holding in your hands. It marks our fourth year to release a Playbook. Our evolution in community sports journalism began with that first Playbook in 2016, and it has continued with the PrepZone branding of our high school football coverage for this season. DME PrepZone will prepare fans for the games each week with a video preview show as well as in-depth print previews. It will take fans to the field with live videos from several games each week, including a weekly halftime show to update scores. The brand will also wrap up each week with coverage in print from each game in the area as well as a professionally produced video show to talk about each game. Visit DMEPrepZone.com to see schedules, stats and live updates throughout each game. The Daily Mountain Eagle expects 2019 to be an interesting season locally on the gridiron. Jasper is ranked No. 3 in Class 5A to start the season and looks to build on its 11-2 season last year. Dora hopes to bounce back in the same region as Jasper. Oakman expects to remain a consistent playoff team despite a new coach. Curry and Carbon Hill look to continue their improvement, and Cordova and Sumiton Christian are looking to bounce back from down seasons. Our newspaper is excited to begin another high school football season and looks forward to being on the sidelines with each of our area teams from Week 1 until the Super 7 in December.

JASPER PRIMED FOR ANOTHER PLAYOFF RUN By Johnathan Bentley

B

Building a winning program takes time. Unless you’re Bryan Moore. Jasper made the transition from losing program to region champ and state contender in year one under Moore in 2018. Going into his second year, the Vikings are looking for another lengthy playoff run. There will be new faces in key spots — particularly at quarterback due to the graduation of first-team All-State selection Michael Crear — but the Vikings return plenty of talent on both sides of the ball as they take on the label as one of the team’s to beat in 2019. “Last year was a great ride,” said Moore whose team opens the season at No. 3 in Class 5A. “We were proud of what our kids accomplished. We had an incredible senior class — one that we will miss. We’ve got some guys coming back that will pick up the slack there, but we expect big things. Expectations are good. Expectations mean you won. There were no expectations in 2018 and there are lot this year. We are used to that. We are OK with the challenge.” Jasper doesn’t have it’s do-it-all quarterback this year, but the Vikings are still loaded. The offense is led by senior running back Kaden Shelton, who rushed for 1,108 yards and 12 touchdowns last year. Top receiver Xavier Waldrop, who caught 56 passes for 830 yards, also returns. Offensive lineman Hunter Tidwell and Drake Roberts are both returning seniors. Defensively, linebackers Harrison Saunders (145 tackles in 2018) and Taris Rudolph (113 tackles) lead the way, along with linemen Audra Reese, EJ

Colbert, Brodie Vinson, Jaden Vance and Kentavious Catlin. In the defensive backfield, Sheldrick Cherry and Kaedyn Marchbanks return. “Our defense, our running backs and our veteran offensive line will have to carry us in the first few games as we bring in a new quarterback,” Moore said. At quarterback, Crear accounted for 34 touchdowns last season, throwing for 2,858 yards and rushing for another 744. The only returning player to throw a pass is Shelton, who was 2 for 3 with a pair of touchdowns last season. Jasper will try to fill the void with a trio of players. “We have a lot of options at quarterback. Junior Parker Sawyer is a guy that’s a big-time baseball player. We got him out to play football. Spencer Rosenfeld is a freshman and Averiun Berry is a senior. I think you will see multiple kids play in the game in certain packages. We are trying to make up for all that (Crear) was able to do. He was so versatile that you didn’t have to take him off the field. Now we need to find guys to fill all those roles for us.” Jasper dropped its season opener to Cullman last season before reeling off 11 straight wins. The season came to an end in a third-round playoff game against Mortimer Jordan. The Vikings defeated eventual Class 5A state champ CentralClay County 10-7 in the regular season. The Vikings open the 2019 season on Thursday against rival Cullman. The series is currently tied at 34-34-2. After an open week, Dora makes the trip to Jasper in the 5A, Region 7 opener. Jasper travels in its final two non-region games with trips to Central-Clay County in Week 6 and Deshler in Week 11. Ki-Ro Gambrell Field will have a

schedule: Jasper’s move to Class 5A resulted in a region championship and an 11-win season in 2018. The Vikings will face the same schedule in 2019 with games against Class 5A state champion Central Clay County and Class 4A state runner up Deshler both coming on the road. The Vikings open the season on the new artificial turf at Ki-Ro Gambrell Field against rival Cullman, the only team to hand Jasper a regular-season loss last season. The Vikings open region play in Week 3 at Dora.

overview: Jasper shook off two losing seasons with a turnaround year under first-year Viking coach Bryan Moore in 2018. Though the Vikings lose first-team AllState quarterback Michael Crear, Jasper will be one of the teams to beat in 5A, Region 7 in 2019. The team returns 1,000-yard running back Kaden Shelton as well as top receiver Xavier Waldrop. Defensively, the Vikings bring back their two top tacklers in linebackers Harrison Saunders and Taris Rudolph. Jasper will find out where it stands with tough road trips to Central Clay County, Russellville and Deshler, all in the second half of the season. Jasper is going after for backto-back double-digit win seasons, which the Vikings haven’t done since 2000-01.

new look in 2019. Jasper has put in an artificial turf to replace a field that became more of a mud pit as the Vikings moved into the playoffs. “It was five feet deep in mud,” Shelton said. “It was like a pool out there. This year we have nice, bouncy field to play on.” Jasper played all three of its playoff games in the mud. “I felt like it was an advantage for us,” lineman Audra Reese said. “Nobody was used to playing in that, but I really enjoy the new turf. It’s soft.” The field will also included a video display above the scoreboard. “We are adding a jumbotron. It’s 25 feet wide and 10 feet tall. That’s going to be a unique thing. When the community buys in and the administration buys in, good things happen for you. That’s what’s going on at Jasper right now. I truly think Jasper is a sleeping giant. We are just scratching the surface of the success we can have. You know (the facilities at) old Walker High School didn’t match our new school — Jasper High School is beautiful —but it’s getting there. We’ve got an artificial turf, we are going to put turf on the baseball field and add the jumbotron. We are excited about the new things coming to our field.”  •

DORA’S LOCKHART LOOKS FOR IMPROVEMENT IN THIRD SEASON

D

By W. Brian Hale

Dora took a step back in terms of its overall record from 2017 to 2018, but was able to secure a playoff spot and compete against fourth-round postseason team Mortimer Jordan to enter 2019 with new hopes and lessons learned. Although the Bulldogs suffered attrition from graduating seniors and players transferring, head coach Bart Lockhart — who enters his third year at the head of the program — stated his team is the strongest its been in his tenure at Dora and reports a renewed sense of positivity surrounding the squad. “Last year was a motivating factor for us — we accomplished some goals and made the playoffs, but I feel that we were not as good as we were capable of being. During our offseason, our guys have bought-in to everything it takes for us to be our best,” Lockhart said. “We’ve had huge gains in the weightroom — one of our leaders, Jamaal Harris has gained 18 pounds, we’ve had other guys who have gone from a 155-pound power clean to a 245-pound power clean. I’m really pleased with where we’re at size and strength-wise. After a really good summer, we’re ready to get the season started.” Quarterback is an integral position for the Bulldogs this season, with Matthew Busby earning praise from Lockhart during the preseason.

“Matthew has made great strides. He throws the ball as good as any quarterback we have. He didn’t play last year, but came back and we’re pleased with the progress he’s made from spring through the summer,” Lockhart said. “We’re looking for him to continue to improve as the season moves on.” Busby will benefit from the return of several key contributors from last season — including Harris at wide receiver, running back Ikei Hosea and a strong offensive line anchored by Bubba Henderson. “We’re still working hard and continuing to gel as a unit, but we’ve gotten better and stronger,” Henderson said. “We’re a lot bigger than we’ve been in the past, which can only help open the holes for our backs and give our quarterback time to find the open guys. I feel that we’re going to be a main force driving this team.” In special teams, Dora has a decided advantage in kicker Brady Spradlin, a 2018 Class 5A First-Team AllState member, “The stability that we’ve had at kicker since I arrived is something I’ve enjoyed, but it’s a great blessing for us to have Brady handling those duties,” Lockhart said. “I can tell you once you’ve had a great kicker, you never want to go back.” Dora’s formidable region schedule includes the opener against archrival Jasper, who advanced to the third round

The Bulldogs conclude the year on the road against Fayette County, which advanced to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs. Dora begins the season against in-county competition — in Week 1 against the Cordova Blue Devils on the road before returning home to host the Carbon Hill Bulldogs.

overview: Despite earning their second-straight playoff spot, 2018’s 5-6 record didn’t satisfy the Bulldogs, who are eager for better results in 2019. Overcoming losses on the depth chart will be key, but coach Bart Lockhart maintains that this year’s team is the strongest he’s had in his tenure with the program. There are capable leaders in every unit for the Bulldogs, including the speedy Harris and Hosea, Henderson up-front and All-State punter Spradlin on special teams, but the development of Matthew Busby at quarterback could directly tie-in to Dora’s prospects this year. If the team’s overall progression continues, look for the Bulldogs to grab another playoff spot.

Dora begins the season against in-county competition — in Week 1 against the Cordova Blue Devil on the road before returning home to host the Carbon Hill Bulldogs. “In the north half of the state, I think our region is definitely one of the toughest. The region with Mortimer Jordan and Central Clay County is one that rivals our own in terms of the quality of teams that play in it, but I believe everyone in our region has a shot at competing for a playoff spot,” Lockhart said. “It’s a week-to-week battle. There are great teams from top to bottom — there’s not a week that you can feel that you can coast through a certain opponent. Every Friday is a battle and every week of preparation for that Friday is a grind.”  •

CORDOVA LOOKS FOR A BOUNCE-BACK SEASON

J

By Johnathan Bentley

Justin Jones is no stranger to the winning history of Cordova football. Now it’s his job to get the Blue Devils back to those winning ways. Jones, who comes to Cordova after a five-year stint as the head coach at New Brockton, has brought needed excitement to a program coming off its worst season in two decades. It’s Cordova’s past success, two state championships, 16 region championships and 29 playoff appearances, that appealed to Jones. “If you know anything about high school football in Alabama, you know about Cordova — the history, the style, the championships. Football is important to the people and the community of Cordova. For my family, that was a huge draw,” Jones said. The Blue Devils are just three years removed from back-to-back appearances in the state semifinals, but the team has struggled since, winning a total of five games over the last two seasons. Cordova is 1-11 in its last 12 games heading into the season opener against Dora. Despite the recent struggles, Cordova players have come out in force with Jones taking over the program. After closing last season with 24 players, the Blue Devils have a varsity roster of more than 70 entering the season. “We have 77 players grades 9 to 12. The numbers are good. We are able to practice like we need to practice and that’s a big key,” Jones said. “One of the brightest things I see about our kids is that they are excited just to be out there and be a part of what’s going on. I will be honest with you — that’s not coach

Jones, that’s just Cordova. The kids love to play football. That’s why they are there.” Senior lineman Jaxson McLemore has noticed a change in the mind set. “Everybody has got more energy than they did,” McLemore said. “Everybody wants to practice and workout. It’s a different vibe down there than it was (last year).” Though there will be plenty of new faces, Cordova is one of the few teams in the county that is returning its starting quarterback. Kason Smith has been a two-year starter for the Blue Devils. Jones said the senior is key to the team this season. “Kason is doing a good job. He’s a kid that works hard. We’ve been able to integrate our system into what fits him best. He’s got a great opportunity to have a really big year. A lot of things are different from what went on in the past. The way we handle the offensive side of the ball — he’s going to have a lot of opportunities to have some big time games. What we do offensively runs through the quarterback position,” Jones said. Cordova will find out where it stands in Class 4A, Region 5 quickly. Six of the Blue Devils first seven opponents made the playoffs last season. The Blue Devils face last year’s top three region teams in consecutive order starting in Week 3 with a home game against Good Hope. Road games at Fayette County and Northside follow. After rivalry games against Oakman and Curry on the road, Cordova closes the season with three straight home games, including key region matchups

schedule: New Cordova football coach, Justin Jones, will get to experience his first rivalry game against Dora in the season opener on Aug. 23. Cordova will be tested early and often in 2019. Six of the Blue Devils’ first seven opponents advanced to the playoffs last year. Cordova plays a tough three-game road stretch starting in Week 4 with games against last year’s region champ Fayette County, last year’s region runner up Northside and county rival Oakman. The Blue Devils close the season with three home games against region foes Oak Grove and Haleyville and a non-region game against West Point.

overview: Cordova enters the 2019 season with an air of excitement. That starts with energetic new head football coach Justin Jones, who comes to Cordova after a five-year stint at New Brockton, where he led the Gamecocks to the playoffs all five years. The Blue Devils are coming off their worst record (1-9) since 1998, but there will be plenty of changes for the upcoming season — including a huge boost in the number of players. The Blue Devils closed out last season with less than 30 players. This season the roster has ballooned to 77 players, giving the Blue Devils much needed depth. Cordova figures to be in the mix for a playoffs in a top-heavy region with key games coming against Curry and Haleyville.

key number: 55 Points Cordova allowed to West Point in a 55-14 loss in the season finale in 2018, the most points allowed since Week 8 of the 2004 season.

against Oak Grove and Haleyville. Though wins have been hard to come by over the last two years, Jones realizes there will always be high expectations at Cordova. “Yes there are expectations, but for any football coach you want to be in a place where the expectations are high and at Cordova they are. We expect to win, and win a lot. Our job as a staff is to get things headed back in the right direction,” Jones added. As for this year’s staff, offensive coaches include Buster Howell, Tyler Kuykendall, Nathan Sanders and former Cordova player Karter Smith. Former Cordova All-State player Jake Howton is working with the running backs and quarterbacks. On the defensive side, former Cordova star Tim Simon returns as a coach, while Austin Barnhill comes from Pelham, David Stapleton joins the staff after serving as a student assistant at Troy University and former Carbon Hill player Blaine Eads comes from Beauregard. Jones said Cordova’s players are putting in time in order to turn the program around. “They are learning the value of the word we all hate — work,” Jones said “We live in a society where it’s all about quick rewards. It’s all about right now. In football, it’s so different. In football you are going to work as hard as you can starting in January and in August so I can reap a reward in November. I’m going to reap a reward, it may not be today, but that day’s coming. It’s just nice to see kids enjoy being at football practice. It’s fun to be around kids and young men that are excited about what’s going on.” McLemore said he is ready for the season. “I’m coming out guns a blazing. It’s my last year, I got to make it count,” he said.   •

WILLIAMS MAKES MOVE TO HEAD COACH AT CARBON HILL

A

By W. Brian Hale

After a playing career in the prep, college and pro ranks, as well as years as an assistant coach in the area, Chavis Williams takes the reins as the head coach at Carbon Hill for his inaugural season. Unlike many first-year coaches, Williams, who has spent several years building the Bulldogs’ defense into a top-notch unit, will now oversee the entire program, with the advantage of in-depth knowledge of the players under his guidance. Carbon Hill will look to followup the success of last year’s team, which finished with a 5-5 record — the program’s best year since 2006. Replacing standout talent such as Carson McGinnis, Jon Michael Madison, Brandon Scoles, Calijah Cook and Jev Windham will be of top concern, but Williams and his staff is excited about the 2019 season. “We’ve had a lot of people grow up this summer and realize the opportunities they all have to make a difference on our team. The guys have worked really hard — we’ve put them through the ropes,” Williams said. “We want the team to maintain their toughness all the way through the fourth quarter. The progress that we’ve seen in our strength and conditioning program is a testament to our coaching staff and the dedication of the players to make themselves better.” A top returning asset for Carbon Hill is the linebacker duo of Alex Atkins — the 2018 Defensive Player of the Year — and Hayden Pare, who will both see their roles increase on the offensive side to include running back and tight end play. Conner Roden returns to add leadership

along the offensive and defensive fronts. Among some of the emerging leaders, Williams pointed to Dalton Perry, Kaleb Lawrence, Braxton Bunn and transfer Devin Daniel. “Overall, we’ve been working hard and over the past three years, we’ve built a standard on defense of being physical and running to the ball, and it’s great to see it take shape in everything we do,” Williams said. “We’re looking for big success on our offense and defense.” Being motivated to build on the growing success of the previous seasons has been of great importance for Atkins, who is eager to see his team earn a postseason berth. “Since my freshman season, we’ve tried to build on every year as much as we could. We come in everyday and work hard — winning every day one day at a time,” Atkins said. “That follows our mind set of one day at a time, one week at a time, one game at a time. It’s how our goals are accomplished.” One aspect Carbon Hill has worked hard on throughout the years and intensely this summer has been in communication throughout the team, particularly on defense, where Atkins and Pare will look to read and react against the offenses they will face. “Communication is one of the biggest factors for our entire defense. From our position, we have to be heard, know where everyone is at and need to be ready for the play,” Pare said. “Alex and I communicate really well, and in turn, we talk to the entire defense to make sure they know where their assignment is and to anticipate where the ball could be going.”

The Bulldogs will once again face a daunting schedule, with seven playoff teams competing against Carbon Hill in 2019. Good Hope, which went 11-2 in 2018 and made a third-round playoff appearance, hosts Carbon Hill to begin the season followed by another road game against in-county rival Dora. “We’re not going to worry about who we’re playing each week, we’re going to play to the standard we’ve set. The first two weeks are two great opponents who we have to take on in their home stadiums,” Williams said. “It will be a good test for us, they’ll be well-coached and we’re hoping to give them a good matchup and see what happens at the end of the day.”  •

HALL LOOKS TO CONTINUE RUN OF SUCCESS AT OAKMAN By W. Brian Hale

F

For the first time in a decade, the Oakman Wildcats have a new head coach at the helm, with Ryan Hall taking over for Mark Hastings, the most successful coach in program history. Although Hall is new to the post, he inherits a team stacked with talent and experience. Just four seniors graduated from a 2018 squad that went 5-6, earned a playoff berth and came within a combined six points of a 7-4 finish. Returning is 2019 DME Prepzone Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Christian Hubbard, along with preseason first-team selections Malachi Bridges, AJ Odom, and Kaleb Pedraza. The Wildcats can also look for big contributions from Fernando Hernandez, Dante Williams, Logan Martin and Luke Johnson. Fourteen seniors will take the field for Oakman this season, an asset Hall said will be vital for his team’s success. “As a coaching staff, we’re excited to have such a large group of seniors returning this season. We want to give them the best high school football experience we can give them. It’s been an objective of myself and our staff to provide them an environment that they can grow in as players and as people, as well as one that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives,” Hall said. “We have a good number of underclassmen who have shown they’re more than capable of stepping up when their number is called and providing us with some key depth. You’ll see them transform into our future leaders this year.”

Hubbard, a Second-Team All-State selection in 2018, rushed 256 times for 1,803 yards with 21 touchdowns and is expected to be one of the area’s top game changers. Under center, Bridges has good targets in Williams and Hernandez and great protection upfront in a line anchored by Pedraza and Johnson. Bridges stated that one of his top goals for the season is another deep playoff run like he experienced during his freshman year when Oakman advanced to the third round. “It was a very big accomplishment when we played Piedmont in the third round and it’s part of the success we’ve built in making the postseason every year,” Bridges said. “We want that to continue this year. For my part, I want to maintain a good, positive attitude and keep my focus on the game, as well as help out my teammates in any way I can.” Pass-rushing specialist Odom joins Johnson and Pedraza on the defensive line, while Martin will lead the linebacking corps. In the secondary, Williams and Hernandez will look to lock-down receivers. “As a teammate, I want to be the best teammate and example I can for the rest of our team and our younger players,” Pedraza said on his goals for the season. “On the personal side, I want to have the best season I’ve had yet.” The Wildcats’ schedule won’t be one of ease — with five match-ups

schedule: The Wildcats’ schedule won’t be one of ease — with five match-ups against teams that made the playoffs in 2018, beginning with in-county rival Curry. Region bouts with Gordo, Winfield and Lamar County will determine Oakman’s postseason fate before the Wildcats end the year against Class 5A playoff team Corner.

overview: Following a season of injuries and off-thefield adversity in 2018, Oakman returns as one of the area’s most experienced teams, losing just four seniors to graduation following the program’s eighth-consecutive postseason berth. The Wildcats have playmakers on both sides of the ball, led by the area’s leading rusher, Hubbard, an experienced quarterback in Bridges, options at receiver in Dante Williams and Fernando Hernandez and a solid line anchored by Pedraza and Johnson. If Oakman can stay healthy and build some quality depth behind its experienced starters, the Wildcats should clinch their ninth-consecutive postseason berth and could be in store for their deepest playoff run since 2016.

Area bouts with Gordo, Winfield and Lamar County will determine Oakman’s postseason fate before the Wildcats end the year against Class 5A playoff team Corner. “Every game is big on the schedule — just lose one and you find out how big of a loss it is. All the games in the county we have, regardless of whether or not they’re area games are huge because it means so much to the communities,” Hall said. “You look at Gordo on film and they’ve got talent all over the field. Carbon Hill is going to be sound in everything they do. Winfield is going to be very good. The coaches in our area are going to scheme and do things the right way, so there’s not a game you can go out and expect a cake walk. You have to come to play every week.”  •

CURRY AIMS FOR ANOTHER PLAYOFF BERTH

C

By Johnathan Bentley

Curry welcomes in a new head coach in 2019. The Yellow Jackets also welcome in a new-look team after losing a large group of seniors to graduation. Jeff Foshee, who served as the head coach at Class 6A Stanhope Elmore in Milbrook for 16 years (2000-2015), moves up to head coach after serving as an assistant under coach Philip Smith in 2018. Curry advanced to the playoffs for the first time since 2011 last year, but the team loses most of its offensive playmakers, including running back Colton Burton and athlete Colt Aaron, as well as quarterback Luke Smith, who is not playing this season. “There are a lot of new faces. We lost a lot of good football players from last year, but we’ve got some guys coming back,” Foshee said. “I got to know the kids last year. That helps when you become the head coach. As soon as they named me the head coach I was in the hallways trying to get the ones we wanted to get. We didn’t get them all, but we got several that we wanted to get out on the field.” Curry has added a pair of basketball players to the roster, pushing the number of varsity players to 55. Foshee played football at the University of Alabama for coach Gene Stallings. He said his time in Tuscaloosa has a lot to do with his coaching style. “I’m a little old school. My philosophy is a lot like the guy I played for at Alabama. Offensively, we have to be able to lineup and run the football. We’ve got to be solid in the kicking game, and defensively, we have to

be able to stop the run. We want to establish the run and be as physical as we can,” Foshee said. “If they do the little things right, the big things — like winning games — will take care of themselves.” With most schools running a form of the no-huddle or spread offense, Foshee said Curry will stand apart from the norm. “We will be a two-back offense most of the time and we will have some one-back stuff in there too,” Foshee said. “I think in the last 15 to 20 years, the game, on the offensive side, is not as physical as it used to be with the spread offense. I think we are going to use that to our advantage. Hopefully, these other people are getting ready for spread teams and we are going to come at them with a down-hill run game, play-action pass, type style.” Foshee will be joined on the staff by defensive coordinator Andrew Dickerson, offensive coach Mike Cain and line coach B.J. Baker. Austin Mansell will serve as a volunteer assistant. “Myself and those four guys — I think we have got good chemistry. I think we work well together,” Foshee added. Curry, which opens the season with a pair of road games and an off week, doesn’t play its home opener until Sept. 13. The Yellow Jackets have just four home games this season. The final home game comes on Oct. 11 against rival Cordova. The last three games include trips to Good Hope, Northside and Carbon Hill. “I use that as a challenge for our

schedule: Curry will be the road warriors in 2019, playing just four home games as the Yellow Jackets try to make a second straight trip to the state playoffs. The season opens with two tough road games against playoff teams Addison and Oakman. Curry gets four of its next five games at home starting with the region opener against Oak Grove in Week 4. The season ends with consecutive road games against region front-runners Good Hope and Northside before a road game vs. county rival Carbon Hill in the season finale.

overview: Curry advanced to the postseason in 2018 for just the second time in a decade following a 5-6 finish. The loss of 12 of last year’s seniors, will obviously be a building point this season, particularly in the skill positions. The line has experience back in Tidwell, Mason Roberts and Corey Freeman, but has holes to fill as well. With three tough matchups in the first four games of the year, the younger Yellow Jackets will have to grow up quickly. Some wins are in the cards for Curry this season while the program builds for the future.

guys. It’s not about where you play, it’s about how you play,” Foshee said. “The focus is not so much on who we play, but on ourselves.” Seniors Levi Tidwell and Nate South are hoping for a return to the playoffs this season, though both acknowledge there is work to do. “We’ve been doing a lot more conditioning than the last couple of years. We are working extremely hard,” said Tidwell, an offensive and defensive lineman. “Coach is pushing us more and more every day. We can’t expect a day off with him, and I think that is going to have a lot to do with our playoff run this year. I’m hoping we can get back to the playoffs.” The Yellow Jackets haven’t made back-to-back playoff appearances since 1995-96. “It’s going to take a lot of hard work to get back where we were last year, with all the losses of kids graduating,” said South, who plays linebacker and running back. “We will have to have a lot of people step up and get into that position to make it back to the playoffs.”  •

PROVEN WINNER POWELL TAKES OVER SUMITON CHRISTIAN PROGRAM

T

By W. Brian Hale

The Sumiton Christian Eagles enter the 2019 season with plenty of changes — most notably at head coach. David Powell, who spent 25 years at McAdory building the Yellow Jackets into a perennial playoff powerhouse, arrives at Sumiton Christian looking to build the Eagles into one of the state’s elite programs. Although the Eagles have earned just two playoff berths in the past 10 seasons, Powell said he is excited to be at Sumiton Christian — excitement that has become prevalent in and around the program. “Many people ask me what the difference is with taking over a new team — when you’re on the field, you’re just coaching. You’re trying to help the players get better and that’s been our approach. We’re trying to get tougher, play harder and smarter,” Powell said. “So far I’ve really enjoyed my time at Sumiton Christian. The players are great. They really try to do what you ask of them and are eager to work hard. I also really enjoy the school itself — the staff and administration are incredible. This opportunity was an excellent one for both my family and myself and I’m looking forward to a great season.” The Eagles feature three skill players in Jeremy Brown (running back/linebacker), Brayden Harris and J.C. Sheffield (both wide receivers/

cornerbacks). Corbin Hicks will also be looked to for leadership. Brown, a four-year starter who has had four different head coaches, said there is a new atmosphere of positivity and excitement around the team that has expressed itself throughout the summer. “Getting a coach with the accolades and record that coach Powell has, we have to see ourselves with a lot more success,” Brown said. “Of course, it’s only going to be as successful as we make it. It’s up to us get out there and play.” Other contributors Powell will look to this season are Bo Franklin (lineman), and Corbin Thomas (lineman). “There are several younger guys that we’re waiting to see how they perform in action that we think will be solid players. Along with our strong group of seniors — whose leadership has been very good this summer — we feel that we have a great core group that will help our development this year,” Powell said. “We have 25 players on the team at grades 9 through 12, and we have middle school workouts going as well, so growth throughout our program will be of great importance.” Sheffield stated that his goals for this season included being more cohesive and closer with his teammates, as well as securing a playoff berth in 2019.

AT A GLANCE 2018: 1-9 overall, 1-5 in Class 2A, Region 5 (sixth)

coach: David Powell — 220-76 overall At Sumiton Christian — 0-0, entering first year

players to watch: RB/LB Jeremy Brown LB/RB JC Sheffield DB/WR Corbin Hicks DB/WR Brayden Harris

key losses: QB/DB John Moon DB/RB Garrett Gable

schedule: Sumiton Christian looks to improve on last year’s 1-9 record with a schedule that includes just three teams that had winning records last year — Decatur Heritage, Aliceville and Winston County. The Eagles will host Hanceville on Friday, Aug. 23 in the season opener. After beginning region play at Sulligent in Week 3, Sumiton Christian has key back-to-back region games against Cold Springs and Southeastern. Two wins could be enough to get the Eagles in the playoffs, Sulligent finished 2-4 in region play last season, winning the fourth playoff seed.

overview: Sumiton Christian turns to new head coach David Powell to stabilize a program that has now had four head coaches in as many years. Powell, one of the most successful coaches in the state, brings instant credibility to the sideline after winning 220 games in 25 years as the head coach at McAdory. He took the Yellow Jackets to the playoffs 24 of his 25 years. At Sumiton Christian he takes over a team that won just a single game last season. The Eagles struggled on both sides of the ball last season, scoring just 102 points — Sumiton Christian’s lowest total since 102. Despite last year’s 1-9 record, optimism is high with Powell at the helm. With the number of players hovering in the mid-20s, health will be main concern for the Eagles.

key number: 7 Number of Sumiton Christian all-time wins against Southeastern. The Eagles defeated the Mustangs 20-16 last season for their only victory.

“Off the field, I think we’re becoming better men through everything we do. We’re making a family,” Sheffield said. “On the field, it starts with working towards making the playoffs and seeing where we can go from there. We want to compete with the really good teams.” The Eagles kick off the year hosting the Hanceville Bulldogs, before facing playoff teams Decatur Heritage and Sulligent. Sumiton Christian also faces Aliceville — which advanced to the fourth round of the playoffs and Winston County, another playoff contender, in region play. The season concludes with a non-region contest against Victory Christian. Sumiton Christian suffered through its worst season since 2009 last year, finishing 1-9. The team also averaged just 10.2 points per game, its lowest total since joining the AHSAA in 2000.  •
