2019 Mountain East Conference Acrobatics & Tumbling Championship
Welcome To the 2019 Acrobatics & Tumbling Championship Dear Student-Athletes, Coaches, Officials and Fans, On behalf of the Mountain East Conference, it is my great pleasure to welcome you a truly historic event: the 2019 MEC Acrobatics & Tumbling Championship. We are thrilled to be the first league in the country to sponsor an Acrobatics & Tumbling conference championship here this weekend at Fairmont State University. It is a great honor, and we hope that this championship experience is a memorable one for all involved. We are looking forward to great competition and having the remarkable athleticism and talents from the many Acrobatics & Tumbling student-athletes on display. This weekend culminates not just a season’s worth of work, but the countless hours these student-athletes have put in over the years of their lives. It is a great privilege to support all of the participants this weekend. Thank you for your attendance this weekend and throughout the season. With two more Mountain East Conference institutions adding the sport of Acrobatics & Tumbling in the coming years, we are looking forward to a bright future with this sport and with this championship. Sincerely,
Reid Amos Commissioner Mountain East Conference

2019 Mountain East Conference Acrobatics & Tumbling Championship
Dear Acrobatics & Tumbling
In 2018-19, the Mountain East Conference began its “Dear Sport” initiative where student-athletes in the conference were encouraged to write a letter to their sport. The initiative provides the opportunity for student-athletes to express in their own words the impact that sports has played in shaping them throughout their lives. Below are letters from select Acrobatics & Tumbling student-athletes Dear Acrobatics and Tumbling,
Dear Acrobatics and Tumbling,
I haven’t known you for my entire life, but that’s what has made our relationship so special. In our short time together, I’ve learned so much about this extraordinary sport and even more about myself.
One of my favorite quotes is, “strong women lift each other up.” Thank you for allowing me to experience what this truly means. The best thing a woman can be, especially in a time like now, is empowered and you allow us to be that. You showed me how to look into the face of adversity and overcome it.
You’re unforgiving of laziness, and you don’t pity the weak. You brought together so many lessons I have learned in my past sports and experiences and taught me how to apply those skills in a completely new way. You’re new, you’re challenging, and you’re unique. Your demands are different from anything I’ve dealt with before, and that has showed me how versatile I can be. No, we haven’t been together for a long time, but that taught me how capable I am to learn new things and to push myself into unfamiliar territories. You showed me that the work I put in, is the result I will see in the end. You’ve pushed me to keep moving forward, even when I felt like I couldn’t go any further. You remind me that if I’m willing to work hard and make sacrifices, I will be rewarded with success and support. You’ve given me a team of warriors who are equally as dedicated, hardworking, and as passionate about life as I am. You gave me a group of leaders who showed me what it meant to follow my dreams and truly taught me not to let others influence my decision in my own life. Acro and tumbling, you have been a constant in my life even when I felt like nothing was for certain. For all these things, I just want to express how grateful I am. Without you, I could have missed out on so many experiences, memories, and lessons. I’m immensely proud of the woman you have shown me that I can be. I’ll never find the words to express the love I’ve found for my teammates and coaches, but our memories will stay with me my entire life. So, thanks acrobatics and tumbling, thanks for showing me my full potential and showing me what hard work can result in.
Thank you for giving me a purpose these past four years of my life. You gave me an opportunity to express myself in ways I am not so sure I would been able to if we hadn’t met. You gave a family that I will be eternally grateful for. You have made me shed blood, sweat, and tears all in the same day. You give not only me but so many other girls an experience that shape us into successful women. You came into my life at a time that I needed you most. I was feeling lost and didn’t know where to go with my life and then we found each other. I will carry the lessons I’ve learned and experienced I’ve had with me forever. You want us to strive for perfection but while doing that I have learned that it is okay to fail because I’ll always have my family to pick me back up. I will certainly miss you but I have a feeling we will always be in each other’s lives. Lots of love, Jackie Deary #15 Glenville State College P.S. It has been so much fun watching you grow into the empire you are today!
Love, Marissa Davis #21 West Liberty University

About the NCATA
Mission The mission of the NCATA is to bring the sport of Acrobatics and Tumbling through NCAA emerging sport status to become a fully sanctioned NCAA championship sport. Vision The vision of the NCATA is to be dedicated in the guidance, leadership and governance for the sport of Acrobatics and Tumbling at the collegiate level based on fair and safe competition while adding competitive varsity opportunities for female student-athletes. The NCATA is committed to promoting Acrobatics and Tumbling, creating new competitive opportunities for student-athletes, coaches, and institutions with an emphasis on the value of responsibility, competitiveness, dedication, sportsmanship, and education at the collegiate level. Our Committment To offer high level competition to female student-athletes who have developed regulated acrobatic, tumbling and cheer skills. To provide safe, fair and consistent opportunities for collegiate athletes comparable to other varsity sports. To become a NCAA Championship Sport in Divisions I, II and III with member institutions from across the country. Core Values In addition to the standards of meeting varsity sport requirements, the NCATA is committed to the following values and beliefs. Athletic Administrator and Coach Led The NCATA was founded by athletic directors, senior women’s administrators, and compliance officials. With involvement from university administration and legal departments, as well as head coaches of participating member schools, the NCATA assists NCATA members as they implement all Acrobatic & Tumbling programs at the varsity level on their campuses. As the governing body for the sport of Acrobatics & Tumbling, the first and foremost purpose of emergence of women’s Acrobatics and Tumbling as an NCAA sport providing more athletic opportunities for collegiate female student-athletes. As a governing and policy-making entity, our focus is the safe emergence of Acrobatics and Tumbling. Regulated Skill Development All athletes must have a solid foundation of basic skills in order to advance safely. Working with USA Gymnastics professionals, Acrobatics and Tumbling created a compulsory program with skills that include progressions and uses safety as the primary development factor. This intentional skill progression results in better technical execution while keeping the athletes safer. Regulated Policy Changes The NCATA is regulated by bylaws and policy set by NCATA administrators in the image of the NCAA collegiate sport model, with deference to NCAA regulations in all divisions. Competition is regulated by a Code of Points for coaches, student-athletes, and officials, which is reviewed annually. Each rule change or policy directive is based on safety and development of the sport. Rule changes are initiated from educated committees of NCATA staff, member coaches and administrators. Background Screening & Professional Development The NCATA provides professional development through annual coaches’ meetings called the NCATA Summit and participates in partnership with USA Gymnastics at their annual National and Regional Congress. The NCATA, by working with USA Gymnastics, has 100% of its professional members background checked.

MEET FORMAT
Acrobatics and Tumbling is the evolution of different forms of gymnastics. Two or three teams compete at a meet in head-to-head competition. A meet is made up of six events: Compulsory, Acro, Pyramid, Toss, Tumbling, and Team Event. Each team competes and is evaluated in each heat of each event. Teams alternate taking the mat to compete each heat, the home team competes last in each heat. In total, there are 20 heats. In each heat, with the exception of the Team Event, the maximum score is ten. The combination of heat scores results in the overall score for the event. Scores are posted immediately following the conclusion of each event, and overall standings are displayed throughout the meet. The combination of event scores produces the meet totals. The highest combined score after all events determines the winning team. The maximum score in each meet is 300 points. Scoring is based upon pre-determined start values and the execution of declared skills. Teams may list up to 28 student-athletes on their game-day roster. Depending on the heat, one to twenty-four student-athletes may compete at one time. If a team’s best player competed in every possible heat, she would participate in fourteen heats.
Event Descriptions
EVENT 1: Compulsory (40 possible points) – 4 HEATS During each compulsory heat, teams must execute the exact same skills. The compulsory event serves two purposes. The skills are the building blocks for collegiate level skills. Practicing and mastering the skills executed in the compulsory event encourages proper progression of skill technique, resulting in a safer learning environment for student-athletes. The compulsory event allows the officials to compare technique and execution. Synchronization of skills is an important element of compulsory execution. Each heat has a fixed start value of 10. · Heat 1 (Acro): one pre-determined sequence executed by two groups from each team · Heat 2 (Pyramid): one pre-determined pyramid executed by two groups from each team · Heat 3 (Toss): one pre-determined toss executed by two groups from each team · Heat 4 (Tumbling): four pre-determined skills executed by eight individuals from each team EVENT 2: Acro Event (30 possible points) – 3 HEATS Each team competes a maximum of four athletes in a forty-five second acro sequence to counts. Timing begins with the first movement and movement in excess of forty-five seconds results in a time deduction. In each heat, teams must compete a required number of elements in addition to specific required skills. Each skill competed counts as one element. The combined difficulties of the elements determine the starting value for each heat. · Heat 1 (5 element): requires five elements, including one vertical, one inverted and two valued at C or higher · Heat 2 (6 element): requires six elements, including one vertical, one inverted and three valued at C or higher · Heat 3 (7 element): requires seven elements, including one vertical, one inverted, four valued at C or higher, and one valued at D or higher

2019 Mountain East Conference Acrobatics & Tumbling Championship EVENT 3: Pyramid Event (30 possible points) – 3 HEATS Timing begins with the first movement and movement in excess of thirty seconds results in a time deduction. In each heat, teams must execute a three-tiered structure that includes an entry, structure and dismount. The difficulty of the entry, structure and dismount determine the starting value for each heat. · Heat 1 (Inversion): requires an inverted body position in the structure · Heat 2 (Synchronized): requires two identical pyramids · Heat 3 (Open): no special requirement EVENT 4: Toss Event (30 possible points) – 3 HEATS A maximum of five athletes compete in each toss group. A student-athlete may only compete in two heats, of which one must be the synchronized toss. In each heat, teams must execute toss that includes specific requirements. The difficulty of the toss determines the starting value. · Heat 1 (Two element): requires two elements · Heat 2 (Synchronized): requires two identical tosses · Heat 3 (Open): no special requirement EVENT 5: Tumbling Event (60 possible points) – 6 HEATS There are three synchronized group tumbling heats and three solo tumbling heats. Athletes may compete in both the synchronized portion and in one single pass, but they can only tumble a maximum of two times. The difficulty of each tumbling pass determines start value. · Heat 1 (Duo): two athletes compete an identical pass · Heat 2 (Trio): three athletes compete an identical pass · Heat 3 (Quad): four athletes compete an identical pass · Heat 4 (Aerial): one athlete competes a pass with an aerial skill · Heat 5 (6 Element): one athlete competes a pass with six total elements · Heat 6 (Open): one athlete competes a pass with no special requirement EVENT 6: Team Event (110 possible points) – 1 HEAT Athletes execute synchronized choreographed skills in a 2 minute 45 second sequence set to music. Routine has a minimum of 18 athletes and a maximum of 24 athletes.
