Buckhannon’s Salvation Army employees are “Doing the Most Good” by working hard for the community. By Aimee Gargus Staff Writer BUCKHANNON — Sharla Smith, Service Unit Director of the Buckhannon Salvation Army, is committed to serving the community. Smith and her workers are dedicated to fulfilling the organization’s motto by “Doing the Most Good” and deserve recognition as our Hometown Heroes. Smith stated, “In store programs are what most people think about when they think of The Salvation Army.” She went on to say, “We do offer a thrift store with discounted clothing items to the community, but we are involved in so many programs in the community that most people are not even aware of all we do.” Most notably, the Salvation Army provides basic necessities such as clothing and food to those in need. This ranges from things like free groceries, school clothing vouchers and supplies, to soap and detergent. Vouchers may also be given for use at the thrift store. When available, grant funding provides limited

assistance for The Salvation Army to help families in crisis with rent, security deposits, and moving expenses. Utility assistance is provided year-round. “We do have limited funding available for assistance with bills if a family is in crisis with regard to housing,” Smith said. Information about saving money on these expenses is also available through weatherization education. Generous donations allow Upshur County parents to obtain holiday help at The Salvation Army in the form of free Christmas toys for their kids and holiday meals. Inquire into the Angel Tree program if you need assistance or would like to contribute to helping local children have a merry Christmas. The Zack Post Memorial food drive provides 10-15 holiday meal boxes to chosen families each year at Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Salvation Army also distributes free coats in the winter. Smith explained, “One of most well-known fundraising programs is The Red Kettle Program we run in November and December. The bell ringers collect money and all those

donations stay right here in Upshur County to help with our various programs.” Educational workshops and job trainings are also available through the organization. The Salvation Army’s case workers are available to guide and mentor clients on these topics as critical steps to ending the cycle of poverty. Free food is available through the pantry to combat hunger and volunteers pass out groceries that have been donated. “Monday and Thursday, we hand out free produce and bread for anyone in the community,” Smith said. “We also provide special homeless food packages to those in need,” she stated. “These are easy items that can be eaten without having to cook them.” Vouchers are periodically available for eyeglasses, and dentures depending on the individual situation and approval. Substance Abuse recovery recommendations are also offered for people in need. “Salvation Army partners with many businesses in the community,” Smith declared. “We receive donations from Sheetz, Walmart, Kroger and Tudor’s Biscuit World.” Items and food received are

distributed to their patrons who are grateful for the assistance. “Every year we participate in a Back to School Program also,” Smith said. “We are partnering with Walmart to host the Stuff the Bus drive.” This year, the school supplies gathered will be bundled and placed in the local schools’ pantries for distribution throughout the year. Smith added, “We distribute kids’ books and learning materials to Head Start for students when they are available.” “We like to use every resource we have and keep them going in a full circle,” Smith said. She added, “Nothing here goes to waste. We even donate all our old blankets and bedding to the dog pound if we cannot use them. Also, any baby clothing below 2T now automatically goes to the Pregnancy Center.” Buckhannon Salvation Army offers a plethora of social services and gives generously to many organizations and people in the community. Be sure to thank and support our Hometown Heroes in their endeavors to make the lives of Upshur County residents better each day.

Buckhannon, WV Walmart and The Salvation Army are joining forces to provide new school supplies to 400+ local children in need during the “Stuff the Bus” campaign event at Buckhannon Walmart on Saturday, August 3, 2019. As part of a nationwide effort, the “Stuff the Bus” campaign event in Buckhannon is one of nearly 3,000 similar events taking place at Walmart stores across the country. In-store shoppers on August 3 will receive lists of supplies needed, and all they have to do to participate is purchase and drop off the requested items at The Salvation Army collection bins located at the front of each store. The Salvation Army is “doing the most good” for the kids heading back to school this year with assistance to start the school year off right. By donating school supplies for a child in need, you’re easing the burden parents experience at the start of the school year, and helping set the right tone for these kids as they head back to school. It’s the boost of confidence they need to have a successful year. Many local families will be able to confidently send their children off to their first day of school knowing they are equipped with the tools to have a positive school year. For those unable to make it to the store that day, there is a searchable online registry with all the items needed; each item requires just one click to purchase. https://www.walmart.com/lists/viewevents-registry-items?id=151cf508-3df5-4934-a18551da1ccdea4f&fbclid=IwAR3lHcsC-GM7PMhPiZ9OeLiPfAd0WfDTzun4pKkT9kKNK3Pk52kvNuKn9Vc Walmart and The Salvation Army have collaborated for more than 30 years in an effort to meet local community needs. Supporters like Walmart help The Salvation Army serve more than 23 million Americans each year through a range of social services, helping them overcome poverty and economic hardships. All donations made at “Stuff the Bus” campaign events will remain in the local community and will help The Salvation Army provide back-to-school support to 400+ local children in need. Thank you in advance for helping us “Do The Most Good” !
