Reed’s outgoing and kind personality will be remembered by his wife; daughter, Jill Renee Stewart of Weston; best buddy and constant companion, Smokey, his Teddy Bear Chihuahua; several nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews; and all the friends he had made along the way. After attending Weston High School, Reed got busy making things happen. His love of being behind the wheel began with his first job as a taxi driver. Early on he began nurturing his entrepreneurial spirit. His first business venture was a Pure Oil station on Main Ave. in Weston. He worked for SJ Groves Construction and spent over 15 years driving truck for Kroger out of Charleston, WV before his retirement. In 1980 when he and his girls returned to Weston, Reed opened and operated Stewart’s Home Style Laundry, tried his hand at retail when he opened the Sears and Roebuck Catalog store in Garton Plaza, and fed the masses at Stewart’s Millstone Restaurant & Motel that later became The Hickory House. He was an agent for Garton Real Estate for several years. Not one to be idle, Reed didn’t let retirement slow him down very much. Until his health disallowed him, Reed stayed busy as a tour bus driver for Country Tours, drove a van for Upshur County Seniors, was a hot shot driver for Jane Lew Hot Shot and ran cars for Turners Used Cars. AREA NEWS

SOS Visit

BOE from Page 1 School officials are seeking grants to equip classrooms and buses with tourniquets and hemostatic agents to cause clotting. According to resources, tourniquets do save lives. In fact, during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, they have been used to quickly treat severe injuries. As we mentioned in the Get the Facts section, the 75th Army Ranger regiment had a much lower death rate from survivable injuries than units that did not universally train on tourniquet application. More importantly, 94 percent of soldiers in the 75th Army Ranger Regiment who were treated with tourniquets survived their injuries. Today, tourniquets are supplied in each soldier’s individual first aid kit. September enrollment numbers for Lewis County stand at 2581, down six students from last year. School administrator Chris Derico noted the important enrollment numbers will come the first of October. State aid formula will use those October figures to determine the amount of state aid the school system will receive in next year. There is expected to be an increase in students at the high school next year. A student at Robert L. Bland Middle School has been suspended on the recommendation of Lewis County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robin Lewis. After 15 minute executive session, board members reconvened in regular session and noted they were upholding the Superintendent’s recommendation without further explanation or vote to do so in open session. Board members entered executive session at 7:32 p.m. on a motion from Phyllis Hinterer and a second from Connie Riffle and exited the closed doors session at 7:47 p.m. on a motion from Mike Holden and a second from Connie Riffle. Board members approved the date of the levy election for Feb. 20, 2020 on a motion from Mike Holden and a second from Paul Derico with members all voting in approval. Board member approved a request to allow Barbara Tucker to attend Love and Logic Training in Denver, Colorado, Sept. 30 at no cost to the school board. A request from Anita Friend to allow her fifth grader to be released from Lewis County Schools to attend Barbour County Schools for the 2019-20 school year pending acceptance to Barbour County Schools. Board members approved on second reading employment of retired substitute teachers of critical need and shortages including special education. Board members tabled a decision on the purchase of fuel tanks for the bus garage until further information can be obtained. Holden requested the issue of bullying and what can be done about it in the school system be placed on the next school board meeting agenda.

Council from Page 1 87 percent. The fire retirement account is funded at 50 percent. “The folks in Charleston believe we are on the right track,” Minnick said. Weston is currently paying into three retirement funds. “It was a group effort in getting up to speed and caught up,” Minnick said. Council members accepted a $41,500 bid from Suttle & Stalnaker Cerrtified Public Accountants to consult with the city over city finances on an effort to assist in completing in key tasks for the completion of city audits that are several years behind. The firm will assist in preparing documents to present to auditors for the completion of the needed audits. Council members approved the removal of Arbogast’s name from all city bank accounts and add City Clerk Kristin Droppleman. As a result of the State deciding municipalities are in charge of all boards and committees related to the that municipality, administrators have begun investigating those boards and committees to be sure each in compliance with state requirements. These boards and committees cannot have overlapping members as they have in the past as these boards and committees are meant to be a check on each other. Additionally, there can be no co-mingling of funds in the various accounts. Along those lines, council members agreed to remove all current signers on the Historic Landmarks Commission bank account and the addition of Minnick, Droppleman, Mayor Kim Harrison, and Councilman Gary B. Foster. Council members agreed to accept the resignation of Betty Brooks from the cemetery board and the addition of John Riffle to that board. Council members approved an easement agreement with West Virginia American Water Company on North River Avenue. Council members tabled the issue of adopting a resolution in favor of the Fourth Street bridge location until further information can be obtained. It has been determined the City of Weston will be required to pay 20 percent of the bridge replacement cost. Council members set annual trick or treating hours on Oct. 26 from 6 to 7 p.m. with a rain date, if needed, planned for Oct. 27. It was reported that the sanitary department is waiting on agreements from their bank and credit card companies to be in place, and customers will be able to pay their water and sewer bills online. Council members approved the purchase of a flail mower attachment from Jefford Corporation in Stonewood, which is a Bobcat dealer in the amount of $8,572.

Inmate at FCI Gilmer indicted for attempting to obtain suboxone CLARKSBURG – Eduardo Ramos, an inmate at FCI Gilmer in Glenville, West Virginia, was indicted by a federal grand jury today for attempt to possession contraband, United States Attorney Bill Powell announced. Ramos, age 35, is charged with one count of “Attempt to Obtain a Prohibited Object (Narcotic).” Ramos is accused of attempting to obtain suboxone inside FCI Gilmer in December 2018. Ramos faces up to 20 years incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000. Op/Ed Defending the Unborn Clise’s Cornucopia By John Clise Editor Well, my 35th high school reunion is coming up in October. Seems all those in attendance will ride a float, have a dinner and probably go to the Homecoming football game. I graduated way back in 1984, which of course makes me want to take another trip down memory lane… mostly just to see if I remember anything from 1984. The top five money grossing movies of 1984 were: Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, and The Karate Kid. The top five songs of 1984 were” When Doves Cry by Prince and The Revolution, What’s Love Got To Do With It by Tina Turner, Say Say Say by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, Footloose by Kenny Loggins and Against All Odds (Take a Look at me Now) by Phil Collins. WVU finished 18thin the final coaches poll for the year, and knocked off Pitt 28-10. WVU also won the now defunct Blue Bonnet Bowl with a decisive 31-14 win over Texas Christian. It was the Mountaineers fourth straight bowl of that era and their first Blue Bonnet Bowl. It was also the second time in four years my high school went to the state finals in basketball coming up short and finishing second after a hard fought game. Our team, the Vincennes Lincoln Alices, won the whole shooting match in 1981. That was my freshman year. I went to high school in Vincennes, Indiana, though I was born in Charleston. My parents were born to roam. Georgetown won the national championship in basketball. The 49ers won the Super Bowl. There was no danger of my beloved Green Bay Packers contending that year. The Detroit Tigers led by Sparky Anderson won the World Series. I’m not certain, and I’m not fact checking myself in this age of instant knowledge, but I think Sparky was the first manager to win the World Series in both the National and American League. Someone will let me know one way or the other. My senior year of high school I was in Junior Achievement. It was designed to teach young people about business and that sort of thing. It was really an enjoyable experience. I bowled, too. I was terrible. That’s a very true story. The doubles team I was part of finished last in the entire state. All we could was laugh. Our coach told us we brought shame and dishonor to the team. That just made us laugh more. 1984 is also the year the federal government broke up Bell telephone as a monopoly. Long distance phones got minimally cheaper after that. People I graduated with seem fairly excited about this reunion. I went tour ten year class reunion. That seemed to be enough for me, but maybe I’ll make the trip out to Vincennes for the reunion and ride the float. Hey, don’t forget to check us out on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. We have “the rest of the story” there. Lots of pictures, videos, stories and more for your enjoyment.

Katie Benson is beginning her teaching career in first grade at Leading Creek Elementary School. She recently graduated in May from Glenville State College. Miss Benson has always loved school and helping students. She enjoys teaching and seeing the spark in their eyes when they have achieved their “aha” moment.

Tyke Foster is beginning his first year at Robert L. Bland Middle School teaching WV Studies and 7th grade World History. He previously taught eight years in Upshur County. Mr. Foster is no stranger to Lewis County. He has been a coach in this county for 12 years. Mr. Foster received his bachelor’s in Social Studies and a master’s in Educational Leadership through Concord University. His goal is to assist students especially at this age. He strives to be someone the students can rely on for help.

I have always advocated for respect for all human life. In fact, I served as the President of my college’s pro-life group, the Dartmouth Coalition for Life. I used to stand in the college cafeteria handing out educational materials about human life. While I may not have won a popularity contest by standing up for my beliefs that life is precious and abortion is wrong, I sure got fellow students thinking about the rights of

the unborn. My pro-life commitment was cemented even further when I became a father. My three children are a constant reminder of how babies can be such a blessing, and why I stand so strongly in defence of the innocent. When I look into the eyes of my 4-year old baby girl, who was born at Women and Children’s Hospital in Charleston, West Virginia, I am reminded how precious life truly is. While I recognize that abortion can be an uncomfortable issue to discuss for some people, we must never lose sight of the innocent lives we are defending. When I ran for Congress, I made a commitment to the people of the Second Congressional District of West Virginia that I would do everything in my power to defend the unborn. You can count on me to continue to work with my colleagues to defend the innocent and give a voice to the voiceless. I will continue to defend our traditional West Virginia values.

they will be called f o r t h from their tombs, w h e n , having had no concept of time, their wait will seem like it was but a moment. This is another demonstration of the love and mercy of God. Had their “souls” been taken to heaven at the moment of their death, how could they have enjoyed completely the happiness of heaven while seeing the pain and suffering of their loved ones still on the earth? While the Bible says nothing about a conscious soul or of a spirit that can survive the death of the body, it has a lot to say about life after death. It affirms that death comes to everyone, both the righteous and the wicked, but it describes a future that is totally different for each group (John 5:28, 29). After resting in the dust until the resurrection, the dead will live again to receive the results of the choices they made during their life. Those who have accepted Christ’s offer of life eternal (John 3:16) will receive immortality. Those who have rejected this offer will leave God with no choice but to abandon them to eternal separation from Him. They cannot continue receiving life from God, and there is no other source from which they can receive it. Because of His love for His redeemed sons and daughters, God cannot permit selfishness and sin to exist in a perfect universe. THE RESURRECTION At the second coming of Christ, the saints of all ages will receive their inheritance all at the same time (1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17). On resurrection morning, each one of God’s children will be a new creation. They will be given a new body, yet each one will

recognize friends and will be recognized by them. Those who walk heaven’s streets will be the same persons who lived on earth. It’s comforting to know that God will preserve each person’s character and personality, and at the resurrection He will restore each person’s unique personal characteristics. Adventists consider death to be an enemy, but we are not in fear of it. We can confront it confidently, committing ourselves to our loving Father and to Jesus, our older Brother, whose victory over the grave can also be ours through our faith in Him. A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE An Adventist who discovered that he was the victim of an incurable disease illustrated this kind of confidence when he wrote to a close family member: “Last Tuesday the original diagnosis was confirmed. As you can well imagine, it was difficult for me to accept, but I know that everything will turn out OK. God can still work miracles. That night, my wife and I had a long talk, and together we faced everything about this situation realistically for the first time. Sometimes I think that God tests the fervor of our prayers by holding back the answers so that we can examine our faith. It doesn’t matter what happens. Time is very short for anything having to do with this earth. It occurred to us to compare our situation to a father who tells his little son that it’s time to go to bed. The child may object and say that he wants to stay up a little longer, but the father says, ‘Son, tomorrow will be a better day, a day when you can do whatever you would like.’ “If that is what God is telling me, why should I question His wisdom?” For further study: Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6; John 5:24; Romans 6:23; 8:35-39; 1 Corinthians 15:51-54; 1 Timothy 6:15, 16; Revelation 20:1-10; John 5:24.

Pat’s Chat

By Pat Ridpath Community Columnist I enjoyed another evening at the Senior Center here in Buckhannon with the wonderful Singing Seniors and their guests for the evening, The Country Ramblers. Their band is great and especially liked it when they were asking where its members were from. Their banjo player was from Ohio and he said something like, “Yes, I am from Ohio, but I got here as quickly as I could.” He is a great talent on that banjo. All of them were good. Their singer is from Upshur County, the others from Eden. (The online map shows Eden is southeast of Buckhannon. Perhaps that is Webster County.) Our church is going to have a Revival soon on two consecutive weekends, (starting Friday evening, October 11 at 7 p.m., then Saturday and Sunday evenings, and the same evenings the following weekend.) I hope some of you will plan to come and find out for yourselves what Adventists do for a revival and what kind of people go to the Seventh-day Adventist church. I truly hope to see you there. Along that line of thinking, this is Number 26 of the 28 Fundamental beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. There are only two left after this one. If you have been following these, and reading them, I am surprised some of you haven’t questioned me about some of them. It is my experience that many Christians do not know what their chosen church’s fundamental beliefs are. We have 28 now, but it used to be less. As our pastors and leaders study and preach, they have come up with separate beliefs that had not been written before. God is like that. He has many, many, deep thoughts and ideas expressed in His Word that have never been fathomed and may yet become a Fundamental Belief. If it happens and is brought before the World

Council of Adventist churches, scholars, administrators, etc., there may very well be 29 or 30, or more Fundamental beliefs before Jesus returns. T o d a y ’ s 26th Belief is DEATH AND RESURRECTION The biblical teaching about the resurrection and the condition of human beings in death is full of comfort and hope. When we are hurting, we don’t need to give ourselves up to inconsolable grief “like the rest of men, who have no hope” (1 Thessalonians 4:13). The reason for our hope is Christ, who said, “Because I live, you also will live” (John 14:19). Seventh-day Adventists differ from the majority of Christians in their understanding about what happens during the time between death and the resurrection. We believe in the unity of the person and in the impossibility of a conscious existence apart from the body. There is no biblical basis whatsoever in support of the teaching that at the resurrection there will be a reunion of the body and a soul that was separated from the body at death. The Hebrew and Greek words that are translated “soul” in our English Bibles basically mean the person himself, not a part of the person that is conscious, immortal, and capable of living apart from the body. DEATH IS LIKE SLEEP Consciousness ceases at death (Psalm 146:4). The body disintegrates and becomes dust (Ecclesiastes 3:20). The dead do not continue a conscious existence in either heaven or hell. Speaking metaphorically, they “sleep” (John 11:11; 1 Thessalonians 4:14). At the resurrection

Crime from Page 1 According to reports, the West Virginia State Police were contacted Sept. 1 by a woman saying that her daughter, Chandice Cochran, had been missing since August 20. She said she feared for her daughter’s safety allegedly because ‘she was involved in drugs and dangerous people’,” according to a press release from the West Virginia State Police. According to reports, Cochran left a note for her mother stating she was “in good hands and would be back shortly,” but hasn’t been seen since. According to reports, her last known location, according to state police, was the Birch River area of Nicholas County, and an investigation of the area yielded no useful information. During interviews and conversations with multiple individuals law enforcement officials determined Cochran’s last contact was with Speas. According to reports, Speas is believed to be a danger to others. Speas was last seen driving a dark blue Chrysler 300 with a West Virginia license plate. In 2016, Speas was charged with possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, three counts of possession of a controlled substance, assault on a police officer, escape, prohibited person in possession of a firearm, and driving on a revoked operator’s license for DUI after being found passed out in his car in the Pricetown area.
