homes don’t have at least one in care. Jamie Queen, owner of Wet Nose Photos, is another local hero who does all she can to help L-UAC by offering her photography expertise as a free service to show the animals looking for furever homes in their best light to prospective adopters. Mighty Mutts is another rescue group that also volunteers locally, as well as many other unsung heroes that deserve credit for the amazing work they selflessly do on a daily basis. L-UAC is budgete d through Upshur and Lewis County Commissions so when urgent medical cases come in, or a slew of animals, they’re limited to what they can spend. Help from the communities, fundraising, and donations is essential to save the innocent animal lives. All these amazing volunteers urge folks looking for pets to adopt, don’t shop! They hope you will join in the fun at Paws in the Park this Saturday and come to L-UAC if you are looking for a new pet, or if you’d like to volunteer. All of these groups can also be found on Facebook if you are interested in joining their efforts locally. The Record Delta thanks you all for your service as Hometown Heroes!

they lost a job and didn’t have the money to purchase food. AOP wanted to change that. AOP wants the community to know that if you have fallen on hard times, they don’t want you to feel you have to choose between food for yourself or food for your pet. They are there to help those in need with emergency pet food assistance. Last year, AOP spayed and neutered 319 dogs and cats in eight counties, at a cost of nearly $24,000. They have been approved for the West Virginia Department of Agriculture’s Spay and Neuter Grant two years in a row. AOP is making a huge impact with their services for members of our community, as well as surrounding areas. Claws & Whiskers Rescue Foundation started in 2015, in hopes of saving more lives at the local shelter. Their mission is working together to save the stray, abused, and injured animals brought into the overcrowded pound, for the sole purpose of finding loving, suitable, and permanent homes. Claws & Whiskers volunteers network, provide urgent medical care when needed, host monthly lowcost clinics at Upshur Veterinary Hospital where pound kitties as well as community kitties are spayed/neutered, help with transporting, and fostering – they said there’s never a time when their

PET PARADISE

This month’s Hometown Heroes are the wonderful volunteers who generously assist the animals facing the unfortunate predicament of ending up at the local Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility and beyond. While there are several small groups, each with their own mission, they will all come together with common goals this Saturday at the annual Paws in the Park event. There will be tons of fun things to do, beginning with a 5K and a 1K Wag and Walk at 9 a.m. in the grassy lot behind Stockert Youth and Community Center. Lots of sponsors and vendors will be there, many offering free pet supplies. Bring your pet to join in the exciting activities throughout the day, where you can participate in a creative pet show, walk your best friend in the parade, tour the town with them, try out the agility course, get a groom, update vaccinations, get microchipped, and possibly even adopt a new friend! Luv 4 Animals is a small, but extremely dedicated group of volunteers who network, transport, socialize, vet and raise money for animals in need around us. They aim to make the lives of animals, and the people

who love them, a little better in the area. They advocate for and socialize the animals at L-UAC and raise money through fundraisers and events for vetting and transports. They drive all over West Virginia and surrounding states to take animals to rescues in other areas. Luv 4 Animals even helps by providing dog houses and straw in the winter to animals who are forced to live outside without proper shelter. According to President Desiree Poling, their mission is simple – to help any way they can. Luv 4 Animals would love for you to join their efforts and are always looking for dog walkers, cat friends, transporters, fosters, fundraisers and advocates. The Animal Outreach Project also provides essential services to local animals. They are a very small group as well, with a very large passion for spaying and neutering. AOP was started in 2015 by two ladies who wanted to see a difference in the pet population within their community. Most of all, the sought to reduce the number of unwanted pets going into the local animal control facility. With that goal in mind, they started a low-cost assistance program, as well as a pet food and supply bank. They found that some people were handing their pets over simply because
