Information Technology (IT) employee Tara Arnold has been selected as Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Employee of the Month for July 2019. She began employment at the Hospital in 2010 as a tech on the Special Delivery Unit. She then transferred to the IT Department. She manages the day-to-day issues and workflow for Cerner, which is the electronic medical records system for SJMH. Her position allows her to work with every department and member of SJMH. The nominator wrote: “Tara has been extremely helpful with the implementation and continuation for Cerner. She has taken the brunt of the staff and providers’ frustrations but has provided help 24/7. Tara takes her position to heart and does an amazing job. Tara is available for staff and providers at any time day or night. Stonewall is blessed to have Tara.” Tara is married to Todd, an assistant manager at Beacon Roofing, in Clarksburg, and they live at Belington. The couple has two children – Alivia, 6, and Cooper, 3. She is the daughter of Doran and Cheryl Davis, of Weston. She graduated from Lewis County High School and received her degree in public relations from West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC), and her MBA from there also. In her spare time she enjoys kayaking on the Cheat River. Her other activities are family-oriented such as taking the children to the local zoos or spending time at home. Tara is delighted with the honor. She said, “I absolutely love working here. I have grown both personally and professionally here and am treated like a family member. I work with great people within the department and across the whole organization.

Commission accepts resignation By John Clise Editor

WESTON- Member of the Lewis County Commission accepted the resignation letter of an employee in the Lewis County Circuit Clerk’s office yesterday morning. Lewis County Deputy Circuit Clerk Tammy Harris tendered her resignation as deputy circuit clerk effective July 31 in order to pursue another job. Lewis County Circuit Clerk Beth Burkhart appeared before the commission to ask that they accept the resignation and allow her to pot the vacant position to begin the search for a replacement. Commission members approved both requests. Burkhart noted that she nothing but good things to say about Harris and her time as an employee in the clerk’s office. “I wish her nothing but the best,” Burkhart said noting that she had been a great asset as an employee. Upon the written request of Cary Smith, Region VII Planning & development Council commissioners were presented with a Small Cities Block Grant application for a Phase I water extension. A public hearing was held on this grant as required. The commission agreed to sign the grant application so that it can be submitted for consideration. Sheriff Adam M. Gissy presented the Fiscal Year 2019 Sheriffs financial statement. The report was accepted by commission qualifying Gissy for his commission in the amount of $15,000. Commissioners discussed and approved sending correspondence to Frontier Communications, The West Virginia Public Service Commission, the Governor and state and federal legislative delegation requesting work be done to eliminate the frequent and lengthy outages of both internet and landline telephone services provided by Frontier Communications. Lewis County Commission President Agnes Queen noted the service provided was not up to par with what is expected and often leave people in the southern end of the county, as well as many other areas, without phone or internet services which could be life threatening in certain situations. She also noted customers weren’t getting the services they aid for each month. Lewis County Commissioner Rod Wyman noted simply that the service is “just awful.” Commissioner Pat Boyle said much of the blame on the poor service could be linked back to antiquated equipment still in use in the county and the need to have it replaced.

The assessment will make it possible for those vendors to remain on the tax list. The found tax funds will help the city in the future with strategic investments that must be made along with other budget concerns. Minnick said the company usually finds additional revenues in the $140,000 range on average, but that their 50 percent share is a one-time only thing. After that the city will enjoy the full benefit of those additional taxes. The issue will be brought back for possible action during the next regular council meeting. Minnick only brought it before the council for discussion and information. Mayor Kim Harrison brought up the new complaint form and citizen complaint process, noting ti had been a mish mash the first three weeks of the new council has been in office. Minnick noted the new forms are going to be a great way to track complaints, prioritize complaints and follow up on complaints as time and resources become available. He

If anyone else would like to sponsor the event they can text or call 304-997-4628. “The opportunity for community organizations and emergency service personnel to reach the population they serve is the primary purpose of this event”, Barlett said. “The Weston Central Neighborhood Watch, run by BJ Brooks, started this event years ago and it is an amazing way to bring our county closer together. It is entirely free to the public and a great place for families to see what Lewis County has to offer them.” Parking will be available at the old Sav-a-Lot parking lot. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August (Texas and select areas celebrate on the first Tuesday in October). Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more. If you are interested in sponsoring a prize on behalf of yourself or your business, or would like to set up as an organization, please contact Brittney Barlett via Facebook or text/call at 304-997-4628.

noted that many times officials and to follow up immediately but don’t have the time to do so as other issues come up during the course of daily operations. City Councilman Gary Foster stressed the importance of communication between community, council and city hall employees. “We want people to know the city building as their friend,” Minnick said adding that he wanted to see “lots of smiling faces when people leave.” Parking meters were also a hot topic of discussion during the meeting with council, parking enforcement and Police Chief Josh Thomas all adding to the conversation of what parking means to Weston. Harrison noted that she would like to see a report dealing with parking meters. “I feel removing parking meters would be a good faith gesture towards business owners have taken a leap of faith, many of which are hurting already, Harrison said. “People have been complaining about parking meters.” Harrison noted is was a hot button topic over the years and during the recent campaign. Parking Enforcement Officer Malissa Henline noted the meters addressed more than just parking. It is also a mechanism to provide parking turnover. It is primarily to discourage people from parking

in same spot all day. This is why there is are 15 minute meters around the post office rather than a two or eight hour meters. With eight hour meters, people will take a meter and park there all day stifling anyone else from parking in the spot to do business downtown or at the post office with convenient parking. Henline said when she began her job six years ago she was writing 300 to 400 parking tickets a month on Main Avenue and around the post office. Those numbers have dropped as people have come more into compliance with legal parking requirements. “There’s more value in those meters than you think,” she said. Other issues related to parking enforcement include blocked driveways, blocked fire hydrants, illegal use if handicapped spots, and junk cars. Also due to the age and cost of meters, once they are removed they won’t be easily replaced and put back. It was also noted that parking ticket fees pay most of the salary of Henline’s salary though those funds have decreased over the years as she has brought the community into compliance. PEO by code can only enforce parking and nothing else. Law enforcement officers can issue parking tickets in two different ways. One as a a ticket and the second as a

citation. Tickets are assessed as a regular parking ticket, while citations include larger penalties and court costs, according to Police Chief Josh Thomas. Thomas pointed out the example of a blocked driveway as a ticket is a $10 fine. As a citation, it is a $150 fine plus court costs. Thomas noted that at this point in 2019 his department has undertaken more than 140 criminal investigations meaning his officers are already working at full capacity, and adding parking enforcement to their duties isn’t a fair addition to their current duties. Officers have investigated identity theft, utility thefts, illegal drug activity, thefts, and child abuse among others. “We are not big enough to have an investigations division,” Thomas said. “I fear our investigations would suffer.” It was noted that Buckhannon removed its downtown parking meters and have found it is actually costing them money to administer parking enforcement now due to the loss of those funds gathered through parking fines. Harrison noted it was a lengthy meeting but was needed to provide education to the new council and mayor. It was especially helpful to have administrative staff present to answer questions about issues.

Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, in Weston, is pleased to announce the addition of Robert Erdin, III, M.D., to the staff of physicians. The orthopedic surgeon will be practicing at Weston Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Center, located at 29 Hospital Plaza in Weston. Dr. Erdin received his undergraduate degree from Duke University with a double major in chemistry and economics. His medical degree is from the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, GA. His residency and fellowship are from the University of Tennessee Campbell Clinic of Memphis. He is board certified by theAmerican Board of Orthopedic Surgery. When asked about why he chose orthopedics as his specialty his answer was simple…”I enjoy identifying a problem and fixing it.” His parents, Robert and Mary Kay Erdin, live in High Point, NC. He comes from a family of physicians. His father is a retired cardiologist. His mother’s father was a general practitioner in Pennsylvania. His wife, Jennifer Stone Erdin, is a retired pediatrician. The couple has two children – Alex, 16, and Chase, 14. He is looking forward to starting here and meeting new patients. In his spare time he likes to water ski and play the guitar.

BUCKHANNON— In a collaborative effort, Lewis and Upshur Counties are working together to increase the importance of parents taking an active role in their child’s development by participating in Parents as Teachers. Learning begins at birth; we all know this. Every child’s first teacher is also their parent by default. But did you know, that by age three, children have learned 75 percent of all the language skills they will possess as adults? Thirty-five years ago, a wonderful organization named Parents as Teachers was formed to further develop the educational philosophy of parents as teachers. Parents as Teachers builds strong communities, thriving families and children that are

ent practices, provide early detection of developmental delays and health issues, prevent child abuse and neglect and, increase children’s school readiness and success. The Lewis-Upshur collaborative tries to provide one public event per month for the families and children they serve. The Upshur County Public Library was the venue for the Hungry Caterpillar event on July 10. The families with children ages five and under were invited to enjoy free play and activity stations focused on language, motor, and cognitive skills. All children were given a free copy of the Very Hungry Caterpillar book to take home. This initiative is intended to stimulate reading at a young age and create life-long readers. Children who read well tend to stay in school and achieve the most in life. Researchers know that many children are currently

healthy, safe and ready to learn by matching parents and caregivers with trained professionals who make regular personal home visits during a child’s earliest years in life, from the prenatal stages through kindergarten. Parents as Teachers’ internationally-recognized, evidence-based, home visiting model is backed by 35 years of research-proven outcomes for children and families. The program serves nearly 200,000 families in all 50 U.S. states, 115 Tribal organizations, six other countries, and one U.S. territory. Parents as Teachers has four core components of their model, personal visits, group connections, resource network, and child screening. Together the components provide a package of services with four primary goals, increase parent knowledge of early childhood development and improve par-

only ‘school-time readers’ and do not keep reading when they are not in class or completing a homework assignment. Creating a habit of reading starting at a young age will help children to learn all the time. The Lewis-Upshur Parents as Teachers program is a free service to families in both counties. The program provides families who are expecting children, fostering children, or have young children with connections to community resources and events, group connections where families can gather and enjoy activities and home visits. Home visits include resources for parents and activities and a free book for each child. For more information about this program call 304-269-4000 or email hello@lewiscountyfrn. org.

Number 19 of the Beliefs of Seventh-day Adventists is entitled THE LAW OF GOD. We live in a world of law and order. The Creator put in place only the laws that control the movements of the heavenly bodies, and He also established laws that regulate the life and health of human beings whom He created on the planet. The purpose of these laws is to enhance life, not to underName: George Whelan mine it. is expressed in those laws. In addition to being the requirements for entry into heaven, for the dedicated Christian these laws are the standard for progress in our relationship with God and a challenge to continue our growth in grace. LAWS ARE IMPORTANT It’s obvious that traffic laws, laws regulating commercial transactions, and even international laws are essential for the preservation of society, as are laws regulating the moral and social relationships between people. And this is what God’s laws do. The great moral principles of God’s law are found in the Ten Commandments and they were lived out in the life of Jesus. From the moment sin entered the world, Satan tried to convince human beings that it’s impossible to live in harmony with this law. But Jesus came to prove that Satan was wrong. He showed, through His perfect example, what it means to keep God’s law. He said, “ ‘Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them’” (Matthew 5:1). To fulfillmeans to live in harmony with the Ten Commandments. Jesus came down from heaven to give us a new understanding of the purpose, the power, and the promise of God’s law. The Ten Commandments express God’s love, His desire, and His plan for human conduct. They are as relevant for people today as they were when He first gave them. While most of them are stated as negatives (“you shall not . . .”), they are not so much restrictions as they are verbal expressions indicating the kind of character God’s people will have when they choose to live the way He wants them to. After quoting each of the commandments just as it is found in the Bible, we will restate its principle in a positive form. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS 1. “ ‘You shall have no other gods before me’ “ (Exodus 20:3). LOYALTY: God should have first place in our lives. If we belong to Christ, our thoughts will be His thoughts. We will seek after spiritual things rather than physical things. We will try to reflect His image, exhibit His attitud4es, do His will and seek to please Him in all we do. 2. “ ‘You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers, to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a

thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments’ “ (verses 4 – 6). WORSHIP: We worship an invisible God, who is far greater than our ability to understand Him. Any visible representation of Him will lower our concept of Him. This commandment forbids the worship of the imagined gods of the pagans. It also forbids the worship of objects in nature such as the sun, moon, stars, trees, mountains, etc. And it forbids the worship or veneration of human beings, regardless of how saintly their lives may have been. 3. “ ‘You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name’ “ (verse 7). REVERENCE: This commandment prohibits not only blasphemy and the profanation of the sacred but also any false profession. We will give up the vain customs and fashions of the world. Our conversation, our affections, and our sympathies will be in harmony with heaven. Our hearts will be sensitive to and under the control of the Spirit of Christ. 4. “ ‘Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy’ “ (verses 8 – 11). SANCTIFICATION: We acknowledge Jesus as Creator and Redeemer, by dedicating one-seventh of our time to Him. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath (Mark 2:27, 28), and when we truly keep the day, His holiness will be manifested in our lives. Our devotional activities, that previously had seemed insipid, boring, and tedious, will become our delight. 5. “ ‘Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you’ “ (verse 12), RESPECT FOR AUTHORITY: Respect for authority begins in the home through the relationship between parents and children. It also extends beyond the home to all our relationships, both with God and other people. Disobedience and rebellion will be replaced with obedience and cooperation. 6. “ ‘You shall not murder ’ “ (verse 13). LOVE: Most people are not tempted to kill other human beings. But Jesus said that hatred and anger are also a violation of the sixth

commandment (Matthew 5:21, 22). But in those who have been truly converted, love, humility, and peace will replace anger, envy, and combativeness. Love and the fruits of the Spirit will be seen in their lives. 7. “ ‘You shall not commit adultery’ “ (verse 14). PURITY: This commandment calls for the dedication of our sexual power to God. Passion and appetite and every other desire will be in perfect submission to His will. Our old life will seem repugnant and sinful. Sinful thoughts will be put aside, and wrong actions will be given up. Purity will be manifested in all our relationships with those of both sexes, both at home and away. And we will protect the sexual integrity of children and youth. Again, Jesus pointed out that the seventh commandment goes beyond the mere act of adultery. It forbids lustful thoughts (Matthew 5:27, 28). 8. “ ‘You shall not steal’ “ (verse 15). HONESTY: This commandment calls upon us to respect that which belongs to others. We must not take that which does not belong to us, and if we damage someone else’s property, we should make adequate restitution. We should also be faithful in returning our tithes and offerings to God (Malachi 3:8-10). 9. “ ‘You shall l not give false testimony against your neighbor’” (verse 16). TRUTHFULNESS: God requires us to protect the reputation of other people. We should always speak the truth, even if it costs us something to do so. Even our silence can be a form of deception if circumstances require us to tell the truth. 10. “ ‘You shall not covet your neighbor’s hors. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor’ “ (verse 17). CONTENTMENT: This commandment touches our motives. Keeping it means that we will not feel jealous of others. We will be satisfied with what God has given us and not feel dissatisfied when our neighbor has more than we do. THE LAW AND THE SPIRIT Through the influence of the Spirit, the Ten Commandments point out sin (1 John 3:4) and awaken in us the need of a Savior. When we come to Christ, the Holy Spirit continues working His transforming power in our lives. Salvation is by grace through faith and not by works, but the fruit of the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives will be obedience to the Commandments. The obedience will help us to develop our Christian character, and the result will be a sense of goodness and well-being. This is the evidence of our love for God and our interest in the well-being of our fellow humans. As those around us observe our obedience, they will be led to acknowledge God’s transforming power in our lives, and they will want to experience the same thing. This is how our keeping of the Ten Commandments strengthens our Christian witness. God calls attention to those who keep His commandments in earth’s final days as a special vindication of His character and the justice of His precepts (Revelation 12:17; 14:12). For further study: Exodus 20:1-17; Deuteronomy 8:1-14; Psalm 19:7-13; 119; John 14:15; Romans 8:1-4; Ephesians 2:8; 1 John 5:3.

Bennie is a young adult mixed-breed male available for immediate adoption. He was very scared as a resident at the Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility but has blossomed at his temporary LUV 4 Animals foster home. He is very sweet and already house trained. Bennie gets along well with other dogs and loves attention. He requires lots of cuddles, belly scratches and would make an excellent companion. Bennie loves car rides, chicken nuggets and going to the dog park. His foster mom is teaching him tricks and says he walks like a prince on a leash. He desperately wants to find a new furever family. He has a very unique appearance and his

fur is a beautiful shade of red in the sunshine. Bennie has already been neutered and is up to date on his vaccinations. If you’d like to meet Bennie, please contact LUV 4 Animals volunteer Robin at wwpkeough@hotmail.com or call 304-613-8903. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins delighted Broadway audiences for over 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grownups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.”

Mary Poppins is played by Olivia Insani, with Dannie Stiles playing Bert. Other local stars include Shelby Williams as Winifred Banks, Eric Jett as George Banks, Ella McNeish as Jane, and Pressley Bowers as Michael.
