NATIONAL HUNTING & FISHING DAYS

Saturday, September 21 & Sunday September 22 At Stonewall Resort State Park About West Virginia National Outdoor Youth Challenge Hunting and Fishing Days The Outdoor Youth Challenge is both a youth expo and com-

West Virginians today don’t have to depend on their hunting and fishing skills for their survival, we have supermarkets for that. However, we still like to see the latest, hot new item on the market that will “insure” we get that big buck or that trophy fish. And, we still thoroughly enjoy meeting with like-minded sportsmen to visit and tell our tales. West Virginia’s Celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Days (NH&FD) at Stonewall Resort State Park provides the state’s best opportunity to do just that. Held the third weekend of each September, NH&FD is a unique blend of a traditional hunting and fishing show and summer camp. The event is the result of a year of work and planning by the West Virginia Wildlife Federation and the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. Like most hunting and fishing shows, NH&FD has a host of vendors selling products and crafts for every outdoor need or desire. Several concessionaires serve a variety of delicious food, insuring no one will go away hungry. The Stonewall event’s uniqueness stems from the many “hands on” activities available for the public to enjoy. Only at West Virginia’s Celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Days can the public participate in so many outdoor related activities. petition, which is held annually at West Virginia’s Celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Days at Stonewall Resort State Park. Young people are exposed to a multitude of activities and displays with real hands-on learning and instructional opportunities that will encourage them to gain important knowledge and experience about wildlife, hunting, fishing, firearms safety and outdoor recreation. Young folks can choose only to participate or they can compete. The Outdoor Youth Challenge is perhaps the most important event at National Hunting and Fishing Days because, for some youngsters, this may be the only opportunity they will have to be exposed to these fun and exciting outdoor activities.

Enjoy The Hunting & Fishing Days

Any youth between 6 and 18 years can participate in the Outdoor Youth Challenge by simply showing up at National Hunting and Fishing Days and quickly registering at the Outdoor Youth Challenge tent. The Outdoor Youth Challenge will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Also, those youths 11-18 years of age who would like to compete will be able to do so, with five scored competitive events including casting for accuracy, archery, .22 rifle, muzzleloader and shotgun (skeet) shooting. Since the first settlers roamed what would become our state, West Virginians have always had an intense interest in any opportunity to check out the latest innovation or gadget to help make their survival easier. The roving “tinker” or peddler would offer the hardy pioneers new knives, fish hooks, etc. Later, small general stores provided a much wider range of equipment and supplies, from traps to rifles and shotguns, needed to help our ancestors put food on the table. These community stores became a focal point, not only to restock equipment and supplies, but to meet neighbors, share ideas, stories and gossip.

clearly show that women who have regular mammograms are more likely to have breast cancer found early, less likely to need aggressive treatment (like surgery to remove the entire breast [mastectomy] and chemotherapy), and more likely to be cured. The American Cancer Society encourages women at average risk for breast cancer is to follow these guidelines for mammograms: -Women ages 40 to 44 should have the choice to start annual breast cancer screening with mammograms if they wish to do so. The risks of screening as well as the potential benefits should be considered. -Women age 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year. -Women age 55 and older should switch to mammograms every 2 years, or have the choice to continue yearly screening. -Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live 10 more years or longer. Mammograms are not perfect. They miss some cancers. And sometimes more tests will be needed to find out if something found on a mammogram is or is not cancer. There’s also a small possibility of being diagnosed with a cancer that never would have caused any problems had it not been found during screening. It is important that women getting mammograms know what to expect and understand the benefits and limitations of screening.

do. The Bible describes him as being tied with a great chain (Revelation 20:1, 2). This chain is symbolic, not literal, just as we sometimes say that we would like to go somewhere or do something but we can’t because “our hands are tied.” The Bible says that the place where Satan will be bound is “the abyss” (Revelation 20:1, 3). This “abyss” is our earth. When Jesus comes, the earth will be reduced to chaos as a result of earthquakes, storms, and human violence (Isaiah 6:11; 24:1; Jeremiah 4:23-27; Revelation 16:1820). So devastating will be the destruction that the earth will resemble its condition prior to Creation week. In the Greek translation of the Old Testament known as the Septuagint, the word abyss used in Genesis 1:2 to describe the earth in its “formless and empty” state. Thus, during the thousand years Satan will be

bound by the circumstances of a destroyed world. He will have 1,000 years to reflect on the ruin that he has cause in the lives of humans and in nature. THE RESURRECTION OF THE WICKED At the end of the millennium Satan will be “released from his prison” (Revelation 20:7). The wicked will be raised to life, giving him once again a chance to be active in human affairs. The Bible declares that “Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations . . . to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore” (Revelation 20:7, 8). Why will Satan gather these people to battle? Because he intends to make one final effort to gain the victory in his rebellion against God. He will prepare to attack the Holy City, the home of the redeemed that has descended to the earth. The prophet John described the scene in these words: “I saw the Holy City,

rewarding and worthwhile cause to assist. They are open Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to noon, or you can call 304-472-3865. Stealy by Wet Nose Photos

Dyson by Wet Nose Photos the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband” (Revelation 21:2). The armies of the wicked will “[march] across the breadth of the earth and [surround] the camp of God’s people, the city he loves” (Revelation 20:9). But their attack will fail. Fire from God will consume Satan and his vast host (Revelation 20:9). The entire globe will be engulfed in a lake of fire, which will destroy every last vestige of sin, cleansing the earth. The apostle Peter described it in these words: “The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare” (2 Peter 3:10). CLEANSING THE EARTH Thus, at the end of the millennium, Satan and all those who have followed him in rebellion will be destroyed. The universe will

be free of sin. Then God will re-create the earth to be the home of the redeemed. Peter wrote, “But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness” (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21:5). “The great controversy is ended. Sin and sinners are no more. The entire universe is clean. One pulse of harmony and gladness beats through the vast creation. From Him who created all, flow life and light and gladness, throughout the realms of illimitable space. From the minutest atom to the greatest world, all things, animate and inanimate, in their unshadowed beauty and perfect joy, declare that God is love” (The Great Controversy, 678). Pictured from left to right are obstetrician/gynecologist Robert Harris, M.D. and Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital Special Delivery Nurse Manager Robin Drake who were involved in the 2018 Community Baby Shower. WESTON — A community baby shower will be hosted Oct.12 at Broad Street United Methodist Church. Broad Street United Methodist Church is a strong, loving community of faith in Weston. Outreach is an important part of the Church’s mission. One of its outreach programs involves monthly

free community dinners for area residents. Another of the Church’s long-time outreach activities is the annual Community Baby Shower. For 36 years, members of the church have collected contributions for newborns at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital (SJMH) in Weston. SJMH staff estimate that sev-

eral babies are born each week to mothers who don’t have the proper clothing, etc. to take the baby home in. That is why Broad Street has been organizing this event for so many years to help those babies and to help other local newborns in need. The event is open to the community and will be held on Saturday, October 12,

at the Church community hall. “We are inviting all women who are pregnant or have children between the ages of newborn to two years old to the Shower,” explained Dee Evans. “We will have door prizes, refreshments, games and a multitude of gifts for See Shower on Page 8

The day and time has been set for ghouls and goblins to parade through the streets of Weston. Treat seekers will be able to go door to door seeking goodies on Oct.31 from 6 to 7p.m. Halloween is an exciting time of year for kids. Here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to help ensure they have a safe holiday. Here are some tips for taking your youngsters trick or treating: Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame. Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and Trick-or-Treat bags for greater visibility. Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes. Makeup should be tested ahead of time on a small patch of skin to ensure there are no unpleasant surprises on the big day. When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant. If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child’s costume, make sure it is not sharp or long. A child may be easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips. Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional. While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as “one size fits all,” or “no need to see an eye specialist,” obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is both dangerous and illegal. This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss. Review with children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they ever have an emergency or become lost. Don’t forget to keep your porch and sidewalk clear of any possible trip hazards, as well monitoring kids outdoors at all times for safety’s sake.

Scott Tenney By John Clise Editor WESTON – A Weston man has been charged with child abuse resulting in injury stemming from an August incident involving a minor. Scott Tenney, 27, Weston, according to law enforcement reports, allegedly struck a youth giving the child a black eye after striking him. According to reports, West Virginia State Police troopers received a digitally recorded post-Miranda statement, Sept. 9, regarding the alleged event which reportedly occurred on Aug. 26. THURSDAY Sunny 80/51

According to reports, onAug. 26, Tenney allegedly struck a male juvenile in the eye with his hand, causing a black eye. According to the complaint, in a post-Miranda statement, Tenney is reported to have said he struck the child because he “was mad at the juvenile for fighting with his sister.” According to the report, Tenney alleged he was trying to “slap” the child in the mouth, but the upper section of his came into contact with the child’s eye causing the youth to have a black eye. Tenney is currently being held in Central Regional Jail in lieu of $25,012 bond. FRIDAY Sunny 82/55

WESTON — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Lewis County CEOs Clubs are taking this opportunity to encourage people to learn more about the importance of early detection for breast cancer. As part of this effort, the group is organizing a Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon on Wednesday, October 23, at noon at the Broad Street United Methodist Church community hall. Interested participants can call 304-269-8167 to register for the luncheon. The goal of screening tests for breast cancer is to find it before it causes symptoms (like a lump that can be felt). Breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and still

confined to the breast. The size of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are some of the most important factors in predicting the outlook of a woman with this disease. Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer help save thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests. Regular mammograms can often help find breast cancer at an early stage, when treatment is most likely to be successful. A mammogram can find breast changes that could be cancer years before physical symptoms develop. Results from many decades of research See Cancer on Page 8

The RLBMS Lady Patriots remain undefeated after taking down the Elkins Middle School Lady Hornets on Monday evening. By Tara Kennedy Editor of The Record Delta

WESTON — The Robert L. Bland Middle School Lady Patriots Volleyball team is off to a great start this season. While they have only played two opponents thus far, they easily triumphed in both contests. RLBMS Volleyball opened their season last Wednesday against Taylor County Middle School. The RLBMS Junior Varsity team made quick work of defeating the Lady Knights, winning both sets of the match by 25-15. The Lady Patriots Varsity team followed suit and easily took down the Lady Knights by 25-1 in the first set and 25-11 in the second. A scheduling mix-up prevented the JV squad from playing Monday evening as planned against the Elkins Lady Hornets, but the Lady Patriots Varsity team dominated in just two sets again. The first set was a nail-biter, but they pulled it off with a score of 27-25, then easily won the second set by 25-10. The Lady Patriots were set to take on the B-UMS Lady Bucs on Tuesday evening.

Mike was born in Weston on January 13, 1961, to the late Matthew Clark and Catherine Joan Dodson Linger who along with his brother, Jeff Linger, greeted him at Heaven’s gates. Cherishing their fun memories of Mike are one sister, Mary Ann Edwards and husband, CSM John Edwards, of Weston; one sister-in-law, Lois Linger of Weston; three nieces: Kylee Edwards of Huntington, Sydney Edwards of Fairmont and Hannah Linger of Weston; one nephew, Matthew Linger of Weston; his beloved caregiver, Sandy Bowman; and several aunts and uncles. He was a graduate of Lewis County High School and worked at Buckhannon-Upshur Work Adjustment Center for more than 30 years. Mike was very active in the Special Olympics for several years and was very proud to participate in the International Special Olympic Competition at Notre Dame. Mike loved all music but had a special love for the King of Rock–n-Roll and loved anything Elvis related. For several years Mike was a member of the group Joyful Noise at West Virginia Wesleyan College where he enjoyed singing for others. He had an impressive collection of over 100 digital watches all with “peel off” velcro bands. His shopping trips at Walmart might have you picking up the tab for yet another watch, as he was prone to “forget” his wallet

Watson and wife, Donna, and Merle Arthur Watson and wife, Kathy, all of Weston and James Allen Watson and wife, Pam, of Roanoke; two sisters: Sarah Edna Reed of Roanoke and Cynthia Lou Skinner of Seneca Rocks; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Sam in death were his parents; two brothers-in-law: Junior Reed and Delbert Skinner; one nephew, Herbie Skinner; and one niece, Cynthia Michelle Watson. Sam was Christian by faith. His hard work and dedication were evident after he started Sam Watson Trucking and operated it for over 27 years. With all his knowledge of trucks, Sam

at home. He liked to watch the more wholesome tv shows and was a fan of The Andy Griffith Show, The Price is Right and Leave it to Beaver. Win or lose, Mike also enjoyed watching his favorite football teams, WVU Mountaineers and Dallas Cowboys. Mike had loads of fun bowling at the alley or on the Wii. His favorite treat after a long day was ice cream and coke. He was so funny and friendly, his family and friends will miss him terribly. Mike’s request for cremation has been honored. James Richard “Dick” McDougal James Richard “Dick” McDougal, 85, of Good Hope, WV, passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Fairmont Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on September 11, 1934 in Enterprise, WV, a son of the late James Richard “Peck” McDougal and Katherine Saunders McDougal Vincent. Additionally, Dick was preceded in death by stepfather, Edward Vincent; one brother, David McDougal; sister-inlaw, Donna McDougal; and brother-in-law, Scott Law. On March 11, 1960 he married the love of his life, Lulu Law. Together they have shared 59 wonderful years. Dick is survived by his wife, Lulu McDougal; one daughter, Tracey Dawkins and husband, Hunt, of Oviedo, FL; two sons: Eric McDougal of Melbourne, FL, and Craig McDougal of Good Hope, WV; two grandsons: Brooks and Drew Dawkins; twin granddaughters: Ashley and Brittany McDougal; one step-grandson, Alex Dawkins; one sister-in-law, Delma Rathbun and husband, David; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. After attending Shinnston High School, Dick attended Fairmont State College. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Dick retired from General Dynamics as a Missile Inspector at Cape Canaveral Space Station in Florida in 1990. He thoroughly enjoyed his job and working with all the people who help put John Glenn, Scott Carpenter and other Gemini 7 astronauts in space. After retirement Dick and Lu came back to Good Hope to help care for her aging parents and the Law farm. Dick and Lu eventually made this their home and became members of the New Bethel United Methodist Church in Good Hope. Although he never shared

his talent with many people, Dick was a very capable artist. He carved numerous walking sticks and duck and fish decoys, made wire sculptures and painted. While all his paintings were remarkable, one of the most unique projects was when he took the bricks from his demolished grade school and painted an image of the school on several individual bricks. Dick then gifted them to many of his classmates so they would all have an image of their school forever. Dick had a collection of pocketknives, coins, Blue Willow children’s dishes, and many other things. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America via mail at 322 Eighth Ave. New York, NY, 10001 or the New Bethel Church Memorial Fund via mail at 8524 Good Hope Pike, Lost Creek, WV, 26385. Dick’s request for cremation has been honored and a Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. We, at Pat Boyle Funeral Home and Cremation Service located at 144 Hackers Creek Rd. in Jane Lew, appreciate the service of James Richard “Dick” McDougal and it has been our honor and privilege to serve his family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.PatBoyleFuneralHome. com.

Clise’s Cornucopia By John Clise Editor The recent fall fest held downtown Weston was a great success. There were hundreds of people on Main Avenue for the event. There was a great vendor turnout. People could find everything from hotdogs to BBQ and crafts to jewelry and pony rides to wagon rides. I saw a lot of people I know. I’d mention them all but I’m afraid I might leave someone out. I will say it was great seeing so many friends in one place at one time. It was a good time. It seems like fall is just around the corner. Leaves are starting to change, though it could be the lack of rain as of late. This year, the first day of fall will take place on Monday, September 23 for those living in the Northern Hemisphere. Now that I’m firmly set in my 50s, I spend a lot of my time worrying about how often I should clip my fingernails and whether I should take a multivitamin. Things like bone density, metabolism, skin, heart, liver, lung, feet, joints, and my hair are all on my mind. It consumes me daily. According to a recent AARP survey showed that from your early 50s on, happiness rises significantly over time. One explanation for the trend: years of experience. “As you get older, you know that bad times are going to pass,” says Laura Carstensen, Ph.D., director of the Stanford Center on Longevity. “You also know that good times will pass, which makes those good times even more precious. There’s an emotional savoring that comes with age.” I guess that last paragraph is pretty true. It’s like singer/ songwriter Warren Zevon said after he was diagnosed with cancer when asked by David Letterman if he had any insights into mortality and “enjoy every sandwich.” That’s some good advice if you take it less literally and more metaphorically. Learning your life is going to be shorter than you thought gives you a chance to reflect on life, and maybe, if you’re lucky, make some things right. This past Saturday evening, our beloved Snug Nug Windy passed suddenly and crossed the Rainbow Bridge. She was rescued during the 2010 derecho as a week old kitten along with her brothers Stormy, whom she was reunited with, and her brother Flash, who survives at 22 pounds and the kindest heart a cat could have. She was loved and cherished and will be remembered with joy.

COMMUNITY

By Pat Ridpath Community Columnist Happenings this week included several URGENT prayers with miraculous outcomes. God is so good! There were also several happy occasions, birthdays, anniversaries, visits with friends. Robin and I took a River-Walk walk and enjoyed it so much because we have not walked there in months. Then at the end of the week we experienced a sad loss. A friend from Richwood died this week after an illness that put him in the nursing home. Charles Alfred “Mug” Hagy, was a wonderful, sweet person whom I have known for about 30 years, (since my son, Scott married his daughter, Carol). Mug’s wife, Sue, has been staying with Scott and Carol since Mug had to be in a nursing home. We are going to Richwood for the funeral on Tuesday. Loss of loved ones is never a happy occasion. Thanks for your prayers for Mug’s family. This is the next-to-the-last Fundamental Belief of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, number 27: The book of Revelation tells of a one-thousand-year period that students of the Bible call “the millennium.” The word millennium is not found in the Bible. It comes from two Latin words, mille that means “one thousand” and annum that means “year.” Students of the Bible’s prophecies use the term millennium exclusively in reference to a one-thousand-year period spoken of in Revelation 20. O all the prophetic time periods found in the Bible, the time for the beginning and end of the millennium are the easiest to establish, since it will include a resurrection. The resurrection at the beginning of the millennium is called the “first resurrection,” and it will affect only the righteous dead. The Bible says “Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection” (Revelation 20:6). The resurrection at the end of the millennium is called the “second resurrection,” and this will be exclusively for the wicked (those who were not raised in the resurrection of the righteous). These are the ones who “did not come to life until the thousand years were ended” (Revelation 20.5). RESURRECTION OF THE RIGHTEOUS These are the two resur-

Pat’s Chat

rections that Jesus spoke a b o u t when He said that “ ‘a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come o u t — those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned’” (John 5:28, 29). Because the Bible affirms clearly that the resurrection of the righteous will occur at the time of the Second Coming, we know when the millennium will begin. The apostle Paul declared, “The Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the

air. And so we will be with the Lord forever” (1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17). Thus, there’s no question that the millennium will begin with the second coming of Jesus, since that is the time when the righteous dead will be raised to life. Then they, along with righteous living, will be taken to heaven with Christ, just as He promised (John 14:13). John, the beloved disciple, said, “They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years” (Revelation 20:4). During the millennium the righteous will spend their time judging, for Revelation says that they were “given authority to judge” (Revelation 20:4). This suggests that during the millennium the redeemed will investigate the lives of the lost. This will be part of the divine plan to demonstrate to

the entire universe that God is just and merciful. Where will the wicked be during the time their cases are being examined? They will be dead on the earth. Only the righteous will be raised to life when Jesus comes. Thus, it’s obvious that the millions of people who are not saved, who died during ages past, will remain in their graves until the resurrection at the end of the millennium. And the wicked who are living at the time Jesus returns will be destroyed (Jeremiah 25:33; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10; Revelation 19:11-21). Thus, during the millennium, the countless millions of lost people will be dead. SATAN BOUND This helps us to understand why the Bible says that Satan will be “bound” during the thousand years. Since the day he tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, he has spent his time deceiving human beings and causing them to sin. But with the righteous in heaven and the wicked in their graves, Satan won’t have anything to See Pat’s Chat on Page 8
