Diabetes education Award winning gospel singer to perform class set WESTON - Weston’s Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital has scheduled (SJMH) a 6-week series of diabetes education classes, which will be held Thursday, October 3 through November 7, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. each day at 251 West Second Street, Weston, WV, 26452 Two Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital staff members, Population Health Nurse Sarah Rolenson, BSN, RN, and Registered Dietitian Pearl Mealey, who received certification as Peer Educators through the Diabetic Empowerment Education Program, will be teaching the classes. Diabetes is a disease in which one’s blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels can run higher or lower than recommended numbers. Glucose comes from the consumed foods and provides fuel our bodies need. Insulin is a hormone that helps the glucose get into the cells to give them energy. With type 1 diabetes, the body does not make insulin. With type 2 diabetes, the more common type, one’s body does not create enough or use insulin well. Without enough insulin, the glucose stays in the blood. Having pre-diabetes puts a person at a higher risk of getting type 2 diabetes. Over time, having too much glucose in the blood can cause serious problems. It can damage eyes, kidneys, and nerves. Diabetes can also cause heart disease, stroke and even the Loss of a limb (poor wound healing could also be mentioned) a limb. Pregnant women can also get diabetes, called gestational diabetes. Blood tests can show if one has diabetes. One type of test, the A1C, can also check on how a person is managing his/her diabetes. Exercise, weight control and sticking to a meal plan can help control diabetes. The patient should also monitor their own blood glucose level and take medicine if prescribed. Diabetes has escalated to epidemic proportions in West Virginia, where approximately 12% of adults have been diagnosed with diabetes by a health care professional. West Virginians have also experienced higher prevalence of co-morbid conditions such as obesity, physical inactivity, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. According to the WV Department of Health and Human Resources, there are an estimated 240,626 people in West Virginia who are diabetic. There are 65,210 West Virginians who are undiagnosed. As the agency noted, “Access to diabetes education, care and management is limited and/or non-existent in many rural areas of West Virginia. People living in these rural areas are therefore more likely to have devastating diabetes consequences. The social, psychological, physical and economic costs associated with diabetes, create a burden for individuals, families, the state and the nation.” Please call by contacting Casey at 304-473-0670 to make a reservation for this free six week class.

Justice amends outdoor burning ban proclamation; adds additional exclusion CHARLESTON– At the request of officials with the West Virginia Division of Forestry and West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, Gov. Jim Justice has amended the proclamation banning all outdoor burning throughout West Virginia – originally issued last Friday, Sept. 20, 2019 – to include an additional exclusion from the ban. The amended proclamation adds the following item to the list of types of fires that are excluded from the restriction: Fires built for warming or cooking within fireplaces or fire rings at designated federal and state recreation areas, provided area managers have the authority and discretion to continue the ban on open burning within any designated areas. The ban, which is necessary because of drought conditions and reduced water supply levels in some communities, remains in effect at this time and will stay in effect until conditions improve and the Governor rescinds the order by further proclamation.

FRENCH CREEK – Upshur County native Ed Crawford, an award-winning southern gospel recording artist will be performing Sunday morning, September 29, 2019, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the French Creek United Methodist Church, church officials have announced. With 40 plus years of full-time Gospel ministry, Ed Crawford has recently added his newest solo titles “Beyond the Trials” and “talkin’ ‘bout HIM” to the list of over 40 recording projects in which he has been involved. Crawford is best known for his role in reorganizing the Singing Americans in 1978 and for his position as baritone singer for The Kingsmen from 1979-1989, where he earned the nickname, Big Ed. Founding Big Ed Crawford Ministries in 1990, Crawford has spent the past 29 years ministering as a solo evangelist in churches throughout the nation bringing his Southern Gospel artistry to the people through Word and song. Crawford’s baritone vocals have been heard in performances throughout the United States and abroad including the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, and Mexico. He has performed at the White House and on the stages of The Grand Ole Opry, the National Quartet Convention, also at the opening of the World’s Fair with then President Ronald Reagan. Crawford has also performed for television audiences of Great American Gospel, TBN,

PTL, Crook and Chase, The Ralph Emery Show, Gospel Country, and the Music City Showcase. In addition, he has been involved with concerts such as the Bonifay, Florida All Night Singing, Lions Club All Night Singing in Waycross, GA, World’s Largest All-Night Indoor Singing in Tuscaloosa, AL, and the Shriners’ Benefit Concert in Columbia, SC, to name a few. “Throughout my career, I feel I have been one of the most blessed individuals in the world,” said Crawford. “I have collaborated with such notable world evangelists as Bill Stafford of Chattanooga, TN, Bill Sturm of Tulsa, OK, Greg Casto of Cleveland, TN, and Sonny Holland of Clinton, LA.” Other denominational leaders with whom Crawford has ministered include Dr. Laurence Rhoades of West Union, OH., Dr. John Phillips of West Chester, Scotland, Dr. Jerry Spencer from Dothan, AL, and former ambassador Bill Riddick, all of whom he considers his mentors and models for his personal life and ministry. When reflecting upon Crawford’s talent and his lifelong devotion to the music industry and to furthering the Gospel through Word and song, that he has received numerous forms of recognition is no surprise. As a founding and charter member of the United States Association of Gospel Entertainers and Musicians (USAGEM), Crawford is the recipient of the prestigious USAGEM Diamond Award for lifetime achievement and was voted USAGEM’s Male Vo-

Big Ed Crawford will be performing at the French Creek United Methodist Church on Sept. 29 beginning at 11 a.m. calist of the Year. In addition, Crawford was nominated the GMA Male Vocalist of the Year and he subsequently received eight consecutive nominations as the Singing News Baritone of the Year. Crawford’s passion with gospel music began to glimmer as a young man. “At age 13 I heard my first quartet sing,” Crawford said. “It was a group called The Prophets Quartet and I knew then that’s what I wanted to do one day.” Aside from recognition for his vocal abilities, Crawford has also been bestowed what he considers perhaps the highest honor by having been named 1984’s “Gentleman of Gospel Music”, a title that has followed him now for over

40 years. “We invite everyone from our community to come out and join us as we worship our Lord Jesus Christ in spirit and song with our brother Big Ed,” said David Fisher, the church pastor. “There is no cost for admission to this concert, however a love offering will be collected to offset the expenses that Ed has incurred to minister to us in word and song.” To learn more about Big Ed Crawford, you can visit his website that is filled with vintage video clips from his days performing with The Kingman, at www.bigedcrawford-ministries.com. Morrisey’s Push for Reduced Drug Quotas Producing Positive Results CHARLESTON — West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey’s unilateral lawsuit against the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is helping affect real change in the opioid epidemic, as can be seen by significant cuts in the number of pills that DEA will allow to be manufactured next year. The proposed limits slash hydrocodone manufacturing by 19 percent and oxycodone by 8.8 percent in one year. Attorney General Morrisey resolved his litigation with DEA over the quota system last year. “It’s exciting to see real progress in the battle against opioid abuse,” Attorney General Morrisey said. “The numbers are in, opioid manufacturing, prescribing and dispensing rates are down, but we aren’t done yet. Now is the time to fight more vigorously than ever so we can build on our success.” The DEA, as a direct result of the Attorney General’s lawsuit, finalized a new quota rule in July 2018 that embraced the Attorney General’s call for greater input and consideration of illegal diversion in determining how many opioid pills can be manufactured each year. The DEA previously relied on the amount of pills pharmaceutical manufacturers expected to sell within a year. The broken approach did not account for the number of pills diverted for abuse. The Attorney General has pursued change to the DEA quota system for years. That includes multiple attempts seeking information from the agency since 2015, followed by the lawsuit in 2017. During that time span and including the 2020 proposal, DEA’s aggregate production quota for hydrocodone has been slashed by 65 percent, from 99.6 million grams in 2015 to 34.8 million grams in 2020. Similarly, the production quota for oxycodone for 2020 is 72.6 million grams, down from 141.4 million grams

in 2015 — a 48.7 percent decrease. Prescribing and dispensing rates of opioid painkillers have also begun to decrease, with a preliminary estimate of 32 million doses of hydrocodone being dispensed in West Virginia in 2019, down from the 99 million doses of hydrocodone dispensed in 2011. The Attorney General also previously developed a best practices toolkit for prescribing and dispensing opioids, which has been endorsed by more than 25 national and state stakeholders. Combined, all of these efforts have helped West Virginia realize a 51-percent drop in the opioid prescriptions since 2013, according to an IQVIAstudy, released in May and analyzed in June by Axios.

Clise’s Cornucopia By John Clise Editor It’s a glorious day for vinyl lovers everywhere in 2019 as records are projected to sell more units than CDs in 2019 for the first time since 1986. Oh those pops, hisses and skips are reminders of every time you ever listened to a particular record. Maybe it was sitting around with friends grooving to the Doobie Brothers, sitting alone contemplating the Sounds of Silence or snuggling up with that special someone with Anita Baker playing soft in the background. The first record I ever bought was Children of the World by the Bee Gees. I only bought that one, and still have it, because they were sold out of Peter Frampton’s Frampton Comes Alive. I bought that one the next week. I still have that record too. Who am I kidding… I still have every single album and 45 I ever bought. I must have 25 Kenny Rogers 45s. I still have all my parents’ records and all of records I had when I was club DJ waaaaay back in the 1980s. That seems like yesterday, though it was apparently at least 30 years ago. And before you ask, no I wouldn’t want to go back to those days even if I knew everything I know now. Laughingly, I am sure I would still figure out a way to screw up my life all over again. Back to the records. The resurgence of vinyl is just terrific. I never bought into the crystal clear sound of CDs or the concert like quality… ever been to a concert… it’s anywhere from a couple of hundred people upwards of 100,000 depending on the venue and event singing along… I’ll take my records any day over “digitally remastered” CDs. According to reports, vinyl records seem to be the most popular amongst classic rock fans. In 2018 alone, The Beatles sold over 300,000 vinyl records while Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Queen all sold over 100,000. Obviously streaming music purchases still dominate the music platform, but we old school rockers are making a comeback with vinyl. I love to hear every imperfection a record gets over the course of its life time. The truly are reminders of friendship, self-reflection and sweet moments of the heart. You should all friend me on Facebook. Look for the John Clise with his back to the camera. It’ll be a fun time. We can get to know each other better. We can share some laughs and voice our concerns over things going on in Lewis County. If all else fails, we can talk about our favorite records. Now that sounds downright great to me. Hope to see you soon.

Are you registered to vote? By Brittany Westfall WVSOS Elections Division Director

Yesterday on National Voter Registration Day, the West Virginia Secretary of State’s Elections Office celebrated efforts to get our communities “vote ready.” And continues to promote voter registration. The electoral process works best when our elections reflect input from everyone in our community. Which is why it is not only important to ensure you are registered, but your friends, family and neighbors are, too. The first and perhaps the most important step to getting involved is ensuring you are registered to vote. Our team has compiled all of the information a voter needs, including polling places, deadlines, absentee ballot information and more at GoVoteWV.com. Visit the site, check your registration and save the URL for when you need it. Note that getting yourself involved is only part of the effort. National Voter Registration Day is meant to be a single, coordinated effort across the county to raise awareness of voter registration opportunities and register as many eligible voters as possible. The event is supported by election officials from both sides of the aisle along with every major association of election officials in the country. Since Secretary Mac Warner took office in January 2017, more than 130,000 new voters have registered. As of Sept. 18, more than 2,000 new voters have registered just this month in West Virginia. On this National Voter Registration Day, Secretary Warner has said he hopes to see at least one voter registration drive in every county. Many County Clerks across the state will host their own events on this day. You can find your local office at GoVoteWV.com. In addition, several organizations have requested voter registration forms for their own events. Note that any individual or organization can host a voter registration drive by requesting forms from our office. If you wish to simply register people from your phone, tablet or computer, let us know so we can keep up with your event. Remember, your participation in the upcoming election is key to democracy. But you must be registered to vote.

COMMUNITY

By Pat Ridpath Community Columnist Scam or spam calls happen to all of us. If I don’t recognize the name, I usually click as if answering, then immediately click it off. Sometimes the names look familiar, but I still don’t answer. Sometimes I let them ring, hoping that if it is a friend or family member, they will simply leave a message, and if I know who it is, I will pick up the call or return it. I think it would be good if everyone left a message. When I hung up on several unknown calls from a “Helen Conley” yesterday finally, on a whim (or a shove from God), I answered and said, “Do I know a Helen Conley?” She answered, “Yes, you do. Helen Phillips Conley!” She was in my high school class! I was so happy to get to talk to her. I had never been successful in getting her to come to one of our reunions, if I am remembering correctly. I didn’t know she had six daughters and a son, and all of them live fairly close to her except one daughter in Idaho. She was a beautiful girl when I knew her, and I found out talking to her that Eloise Williams was her first cousin. Both of them were so beautiful!! If I ever knew they were first cousins, I had forgotten and also that she had married Myrtie Jo Conley’s brother. I hope we can figure out a way for all the 1951 graduates of Burnsville High School to have a meal together, maybe at Shoney’s when we have our reunions at Burnsville School next May. I don’t think we should wait for 2021 for the 70th year reunion because some of us could pass away before that time. I called Carl Sizemore, Betty and Kenny Pulliam, to tell them about hearing from Helen. I don’t think we have many class members left and, remember, we count class members as anyone we went to Burnsville school with us, whether they graduated or not. We still have Buncy Bosley Marple, Peggy Skinner Morris, Clifford Strader, and others I am sure but can’t remember right now. Talking about “passing away,” I just got a Facebook notice from Jane Wine Freshour that Pat Morris Blake passed away today. I am so

very sorry, and I am also sorry that I don’t know to whom I should send a sympathy card. Also, I called L a Ve r n e McHarris today in Pitts-

burgh. She is the sister of Norwida Marshall, who was my “boss” and friend when I worked at Southern Union Conference, Decatur, GA, many years ago. I tried to call her on Norwida’s birthday, July 20, but couldn’t reach her. I found out she was outof-state with family on that day. We are looking forward to Jesus’ return so we can see Norwida again. Matthew 24 helps us know that it cannot be too far away and like it says in Matthew 24:22, “unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved: but for the elect’s sake the days will be shortened.” The “elect” are those who have chosen Jesus as their Savior. I am sure you will be happy to know that this is the last Fundamental Belief of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Number 28: THE NEW EARTH When sin and sinners have finally been destroyed at the end of the millennium, the fire that consumed them will erase from the earth all evidence of sin. Then God will make all things new, just as He intended them to be at the beginning, when he created our world (2 Peter 3:10-13, Revelation 21:5). In the earth made new God’s people will find many reasons for joy, delights that are beyond our comprehension here, for “no eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9). Though we cannot imagine in the slightest the glories that God has prepared for the redeemed, the Bible offers a surprising amount of information about His eternal kingdom. WHAT HEAVEN WILL BE LIKE:

W e will have dwellings prepared for us by Jesus, in the house of His Father (John 1 4 : 1 3). We will also build houses and live in them (Isaiah 56:17, 21). We will cultivate the earth and eat the fruits of our labor (Isaiah 65:21, 22). With minds that are no longer benumbed by sin or limited by time, we will be in a position to investigate the wisdom of a universe without spot or stain. The pain and sadness that we have to deal with in this life will no longer exist. John the revelator promises us that God “will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (Revelation 21:4). Think of it: Never again will we need to fear that our time for companionship with a friend or loved one will be cut short by their death! We will have all eternity to cultivate new friendships and to keep them alive and strong. As someone once said, “We will forever have those we love close to us.” The changes in nature caused by sin will vanish. Our human bodies will remain strong and youthful throughout all eternity. The leaves on the trees will no longer fade and fall, and the animals will be peaceful once again.” ‘The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, but dust will be the serpent’s food. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,’ says the Lord” (Isaiah 65:25). The New Jerusalem, which will have descended from heaven at the end of the millennium, will be the capital of God’s universe. In the center of the city will flow the “river of the water of life” (Revelation 22:1). On each side of the river will grow the tree of life, “bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves

of the tree are for the healing of the nations” (Revelation 21:23). God’s people will no longer feel tired nor will they need their nightly sleep. FACE TO FACE WITH GOD But far beyond any material gratification that we will receive as heirs of that kingdom will be the privilege of direct and unlimited communion with God and Christ. While “now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror then we shall see face to face” (1 Corinthians 13:12). “And the years of eternity, as they roll, will bring richer and still more glorious revelations of God and of Christ. As knowledge is progressive, so will love, reverence, and happiness increase. The more men learn of God the greater will be their admiration of His character. As Jesus opens before them the riches of redemption and the amazing achievements in the great controversy with Satan, the hearts of the ransomed thrill with more fervent devotion, and with more rapturous joy they sweep the harps of gold; and ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of voices unite to swell the mighty chorus of praise” (The Great Controversy, 678). “The work of redemption will be complete. In the place where sin abounded, God’s grace much more abounds. The earth itself, the very field that Satan claims as his, is to be not only ransomed but exalted. Our little world, under the curse of sin the one dark blot in His glorious creation, will be honored above all other worlds in the universe of God. Here, where the Son of God tabernacled in humanity; where the king of glory lived and suffered and died,--here, when He shall make all things new, the tabernacle of God shall be with men, ‘and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God.’ And through endless ages as the redeemed walk in the light of the Lord, they will praise Him for His unspeakable Gift, Immanuel, ‘God with us’” (The Desire of Ages, 26). Since the classic Chalupa was first introduced in 1999, Taco Bell has consistently found ways to create all-new chalupa experiences. Whether its flavor innovation like the Baja Chalupa in 2000, size innovation with the 2017 launch of the Double Chalupa, or protein innovation with the Naked Chicken Chalupa that same year, the chalupa experience has no boundaries. “At Taco Bell, we get excited by the ‘what if’s’ we can dream up and bring to life for our fans - and the Toasted Cheddar Chalupa is an example of just that,” said Liz Matthews, Chief Food Innovation Officer at Taco Bell Corp. “We know cheese makes everything better, and baking aged cheddar into the shell of an already iconic product is a game changer our fans will love.” If there’s one sure sign of the latest foodie craze, it’s a line stretching around the block. That’s why Taco Bell is giving a few fans the chance to try Taco Bell’s latest cravable innovation before it’s even available nationwide.
