Mon Health Hospitals Achieve Highest Ranking in WV Story courtesy of Mon Health Hospitals MORGANTOWN, WV (August 1, 2019) – Mon Health Medical Center and Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital both achieved four-star ratings for patient experience – the highest in West Virginia – in 2019-20 quality rankings from U.S. News & World Report. In overall hospital rankings, Mon Health Medical Center was ranked No. 3. Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) was ranked No. 1. “At Mon Health we know you can feel the difference in the quality of our care at our hospitals compared to other choices,” said David Goldberg, President and CEO. “Our team of physicians and staff are warm, embracing. They are the neighbors you grew up with and they provide the highest level of caring to our patients and their families.” “In addition, it is telling when community hospitals like Mon Health Medical Center and CAMC lead the list of best hospitals in West Virginia. Community hospitals represent the kind of quality in service and care that is sometimes not found in larger institutions and that provides a solid choice for patients considering where to get their care.” Mon Health Medical Center was also recognized as “High Performing” in 4 adult medical procedures or conditions: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure, aortic valve surgery, and lung cancer surgery. For the 2019-20 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. The annual Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, now in its 30th year, is designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures. The rankings are based independent evaluations of several key measures, including nurse staffing and patient safety.

LEWIS COUNTY COMMUNITY GUIDE
Page 5
FROM THE FRONT
BOE from Page 1 requested by Lewis, on a motion from Holden and a second from Riffle at 8:28 p.m. to discuss a personnel issue. Board members exited the session at 8:50 p.m. taking no action on the discussion. Board members approved a request from Lewis County Food Services Director Chris Derico to increase adult lunch prices from $3.90 to $4 to remain in compliance with state requirements to cover the cost of meals completely with the request being approved on a split vote 3 to 2. Board members Mike Holden and Connie Riffle voted against the request. Members of the Lewis County Board of Education approved the following requests from parents for student attendance, and for the use of facilities for youth sports usage. On a unanimous vote, board members approved a request from Tim Cayton from Friends of Youth Soccer to use the LCHS gymnasium, grades nine through 12, for girls basketball workout, from August 13 through October 31, 2019 Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays from 7 to 10 p.m., when available. Superintendent of Lewis County Schools Dr. Robin Lewis noted that anyone using Lewis County school facilities needed to have a $2 million liability insurance policy. presentations from Amy Cunningham and David Oldfield. Cunningham’s presentation focused on self-care. Her inspirational talk focused on how to live a life with compassion, empathy, and with a purpose after her mishap at a trampoline park. Her focus for the staff was to take care of yourself first. Oldfield gave an admirable talk about focusing on relationships with the staff and with your classroom through positive life changing lessons. Lewis County Schools prepared the staff for emergency situations by training them in a “Stop the Bleed” course under the direction of Dr. Rob Snuffer and EMT Chris Starkey. Assistance was provided by Rich Adams with Homeland Security, Christina Adams EMT, PRO Officers Cayton and Kirkpatrick along with Chief of Police Josh Thomas and Officer Minney. The staff received hands on training using tourniquets and packing wounds. First Aid and Medication training was provided by Lewis County School Nurses, Casey Rittenhouse and Allison McWhorter to all employees. There was also a collabora-
tion meeting between librarians Susie Thayer from Lewis County High School, Ms. Kia from Robert L Bland, and Katrina Johnson acting director from Louis Bennett Public Library to see how the three facilities could better serve and facilitate student learning. Day two for the staff of Lewis County Schools included presentations from the state department by Josh Grant and Teresa Hammond, which focused on “Healthy Kids Learn Better” through nutrition and physical activity. By providing this, statistics show children will have an increase in attendance, academics, and can be more emotionally stable. The staff participated in a brain boosting activity. Lewis County is also introducing a farm to table initiative for school meals that include purchasing locally sourced foods, according to Lewis County Nutrition Director Chris Derico. In a lighter moment, Ruthie Hicks, who has been with Lewis County Schools for approximately 34 years, was noted for celebrating her 75th birthday on the first day back for the staff. She is currently is a cook at Jane Lew Elementary School. Levy from Page 1 but strongly suggested to keep that item in the levy based on conversations with state school officials. Dr. Lewis said she will be meeting with officials with the Lewis County Senior center for possible inclusion in the upcoming levy as that group has lost much needed revenue due to a reduction in money available from the federal government for important senior services like Meals on Wheels and meals at the senior center among others. Buying a third new school bus was also discussed by members to support the transportation department. It was discussed that making the funds flexible within a line item would be beneficial to specific departments such as transportation. While the funds will not be funneled to another area, if monies are specific for one purpose, such as a bus purchase, they cannot be used for any other purpose. Whereas, with flexibility if another need arises within transportation, those funds can be used for that purpose. “Make it flexible so it may spent as it is needed,” Lewis County Board of Education member Paul Derico said. “If it is listed as specific, that’s all it can be used for.” Riley noted that floor and bleacher replacement at LCHS will cost approximately $450,000. Replacement of seats in the high school auditorium is going to cost approximately $140,000. Board President Jim Flesher and Board member Mike Holden are part of a committee seeking possible donations from individuals and businesses to finance the installation of turf at the LCHS football field. LED lighting is also a need at Roanoke and Jane Lew Elementary Schools. Window replacement in the Robert L. Bland Middle School gymnasium was touched on briefly. The current windows are the original units installed in 1959 when the gym was built. “We need to looks at this very clearly,” Derico said. Dr. Lewis suggested a yearly maintenance schedule might be helpful in prioritizing maintenance needs for the school system.
Justice speaks at Municipal League Conference
HUNTINGTON – Gov. Jim Justice spoke with dozens of community leaders from across at the state Thursday, who came together this week for the 2019 West Virginia Municipal League Conference in Huntington. “I congratulate you for all that you’ve done,” Gov. Justice said. “You are the engine. Your cities, your towns, your villages make us go, that’s all there is to it. You create the opportunities. Your voice should be heard at the top of the ladder every day because, at the end of the day, you make us a state.” This year marks the 50th Annual WVML Conference. The milestone event was held at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena. The WVML is a statewide, nonprofit, nonpartisan association of cities, towns and villages established in 1968 to assist local governments and advance the interests of their citizens. The League achieves this directive through legislative advocacy, research, education and other services for municipal elected officials. All 231 municipalities within West Virginia are members of the WVML. “You are our engines. You are everything to this state. Everything starts with you, that’s just all there is to it, you are the ones that drive the boat,” Gov. Justice said. “From that standpoint, I want you to know that I want to help in any and every way I can. “I am only interested in one thing, and that is getting stuff done; getting meaningful stuff done, that makes West Virginia and all of our citizens better.” The three-day conference aims to educate, as well as provide a wealth of networking opportunities for these community leaders. The event included several informative workshops, ranging from how to secure grants, to providing more security in today’s technologically-driven world, to learning more about ways for communities to combat the opioid epidemic. During his address, Gov. Justice told the municipal leaders in attendance that they need to work hard to continue the state’s recent positive momentum. “We could sit back on our laurels, and we can say, ‘Well, we’ve done better. We took West Virginia from being dead last in several different categories to being first or second; whether it be growth, or personal income growth, or construction jobs, or revenue, or GDP.’” Gov. Justice said. “We can say, ‘Boy, how great we’ve done.’ “But, you know, we’ve still got so many people out there that are hurting and things we can still do to make things much better. And the thing you can’t imagine is that we’re just now finally on the launchpad. We haven’t launched to the degree that we can. It’s just sitting here waiting on us right now.”

$910K announced for health resources in West Virginia
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (DWV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), members of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, announced $910,000 from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for 26 health centers throughout West Virginia. This funding will help improve operational and clinical practices by increasing access to technology, enhancing security of patient information and improving patient care quality. “Access to healthcare is essential to the well-being of all West Virginians and Americans. By improving our health centers, patients will receive quality, accessible healthcare across our great state. As a member of the Senate Appropriations
Committee, I will continue to fight for funding for West Virginia health centers so that West Virginians can live healthy, safe lives,” said Senator Manchin. “In rural states like West Virginia, community health centers remain a primary health care source for many,” Senator Capito said. “By investing in these clinics, we’re investing in the health of our communities and working toward a stronger West Virginia. I applaud HHS for recognizing the need for these resources across our state,” said Senator Capito. Clise’s Cornucopia By John Clise Editor
Happy Wednesday! I hope all is well with you. Things are pretty good here at the Lewis County Community Guide. Lot of pictures to take, and lots of news to cover. Fall sports are beginning to ramp already with LCHS golf season in swing. School is back in session today. That’s got to be happy and sad for all parties concerned. Students will be happy to see all of their friends again, and depressed to be in school with studies and assignments. I base that last part on my experience. I know there are students out there that can’t wait to get back into the classroom and start learning again. That’s great. They have to be a teacher’s dream come true. I was more a teacher’s nightmare I think. I was willing to put forth just the amount of effort it took until I could get a C or at least a D. Until my junior year of high school that process worked pretty well. Just to pass me through I’d get a C or a D and teachers didn’t question me. Goodbye and good riddance to the bad student. That suited me just fine. That before I had Betty Lett for Comp III. The first day out, she looked out over her glasses and announced to the class that “Betty would fail you, if you didn’t put forth the effort to pass.” She referred to herself in the third person, by her first name often. I’d gotten this lecture from other teachers before. The whole nine yards of you owe it to yourself, your parents, your teachers, your fellow students and all of that to do your best. Until Mrs. Lett came along, I had just disregarded everything of that nature said to me. Being a card player from way back, I looked into her eyes and saw she was clearly not bluffing. I put the work in and earned a C+ or something like that. I don’t know how she’d feel knowing I became a writer. My senior year I was set to cruise through doing a big nothing. Along came English literature and Andrea Kaskus. Miss Kaskus is one of the greatest teachers I have ever had. She is one of those cool teachers. After our first test she took me aside and told me I was going to do the work to pass. I as ked her “why”. She gave me an argument no teacher had ever presented before and one I couldn’t argue with at all. She said “because you can.” She was right. So I put forth the effort and got a B. It was a satisfying B, I’d like to add. It felt like an accomplishment. I have referenced that conversation to many people over the years. It was one of the most amazing things I’d ever heard up to that point in my life. No threats of being failed or owing anything to anyone even myself. I would do the work because I could. A kid who is fortunate enough to have a teacher like Miss Kaskus is a lucky student. I know I was lucky to have her as a teacher. She’s retired now, but seems to be active with her former students. She’s a blessing.

Community Columnist In writing out all the fundamental beliefs for you, it has brought me to the test of looking at my own life and measuring it by beliefs that I have not reviewed for a long time. This today touches me (steps on my toes) and challenges me to live closer to Jesus. DOING the right things will not SAVE me – only accepting Jesus’ sacrifice for my sins does that. But I wonder how many times choices I make in my life disappoint Him. He is coming soon. I want to meet Him joyfully. [Come into my heart, Lord Jesus.] To all who have heard God’s call to live a better life, John wrote, “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the father is not in him. For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of the eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever” (1John 2:15-17). Fundamental Beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Number 22 of 28: CHRISTIAN BEHAVIOR Although it was written in Roman times, the advice of the beloved disciple John is as important in the twenty-first century as it was in the first. To all who have heard God’s call to live a better life, John wrote, “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the father is not in him. For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of is eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever” (1 John 2:15-17). True religion is much more than an experience that repeats itself once a week. It incorporates all of our activities, including our recreation, music, reading, dress, and diet (Leviticus 11; 2 Corinthians 10:5; Ephesians 5:1-3). QUESTIONS ABOUT BEHAVIOR Whether on the playing field or entertaining himself at home, the sincere Christian will
always ask, Can I pray and ask God to bless the use I’m about to make of my time? Will this activity strengthen me physically, mentally, and spiritually? Is it pure, noble, and edifying, or will it excite my passions, honor vice and weaken my nobler principles? Will this activity cause me to forget God and His Word, prayer, and other eternal interests? Will it nurture my spiritual nature, or will it favor my sinful tendencies and lower my resistance to temptation? Will it cause me to enter into a dream world that will make it harder for me to assume the responsibilities of life? Can I face death and Christ’s second coming peacefully while I am carrying out this activity? These questions, answered honestly will result in the avoidance of most theatrical productions, whether on the stage, the motion picture theater, or the television. It will also lead us to abstain from dances, novels, card playing, and rock and jazz music. These negative influences will be replaced with all that is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable (Philippians 4:8). Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” When we accept this challenge, we will “be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” CHRISTIAN GROOMING God’s will for us includes not only our pastimes but also our personal appearance. He wants men to look handsome
and women to be beautiful, which is why He advises us to avoid any artificial look that will actually cover up our true beauty. God advises women to “dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes” (1 Timothy 2:9). In harmony with these principles, both men and women will avoid dressing merely to keep in style. We will also avoid clothing that is designed to call attention to itself, that is unnecessary, or that is too expensive. Christians will find their greatest satisfaction in wearing clothes that feel comfortable, that are durable, well made, modest, economical, and appropriate for the occasion. Our clothing should always be simple, neat, clean, and in good taste. Beauty, quality, and simplicity are the principles of God’s kingdom. “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight” (1 Peter 3:3, 4). PHYSICAL HEALTH Good health is one of the important ways we can improve our appearance. God’s will for us is that we ‘may enjoy good health and that all may go well with [us], even as [our] soul is getting along well” (3 John 2). Adventists stand out among Christians for their emphasis on health. An in-depth study has shown that Adventists have

20 percent less lung cancer, 133 percent fewer deaths from cirrhosis of the liver, and 48.6 percent fewer deaths from all causes than the general population. The result is that Adventist women live three years longer and Adventist men live six years longer than the general population. Trapist monks, who do not eat meat, have about one-fifth the heart disease of Benedictine monks, who follow a more typical diet. Studies have shown that a vegetarian diet can prevent 97 percent of coronary heart attacks. The World Health Organization estimates that up to 85 percent of all cancer is the result of wrong eating habits. Nutrition research has repeatedly shown that the most healthful diet includes less meat, less saturated fats, and less sugar and salt, and more fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts. This is the basic diet that Adventists have followed for more than a hundred years. The Adventist practice of total abstinence from all alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and h armful drugs, their emphasis on a healthy diet (vegetarian where possible), and their avoidance of coffee and tea, along with their stress on exercise, rest, and trust in God—all these help to explain what is known as “the Adventist Advantage.” Lack of exercise probably shortens the average life of North American men by five years. THE BEST MOTIVATION Most people know that they should live more healthfully, but they lack the internal fortitude to make the necessary changes. What better motivation can one have than to understand that “your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. . . . you are not your own; you were brought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body” (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20). Jesus declared, “ ‘I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full’ “(John 10:10). Reformation without Christ is legalism. But Christ without reform is mere sentimentalism. Divine wisdom affirms, “Through me your days will be many, and years will be added to your life” (Proverbs 9:11). God gives the wisdom and the power to live a long, healthy, and enjoyable life. For further study: 2 Corinthians 7:1; Colossians 4:1-3; 1 Thessalonians 5:22; Titus 2:1114; 2 Peter 3:11; 1 John 2:6.
