The Lewis County pool is set open this weekend in preparation of a full summer season beginning with the end of the school year. By John Clise Editor
LEWIS COUNTY – The Lewis County pool is set to open for the Memorial Day weekend. It will be open daily from noon to 6 p.m. once school is out for the summer. The facility offers a full sized swimming pool with two large water slides, a kiddy pool, two diving boards, three water features, two smaller slides, and plenty of sun. It surely has something for everyone. Whether you want to practice your diving or just sun yourself poolside, you’ll find it there. The pool is located at Lewis County Park just off of Route 33 East of Weston. Take Smith Run Road (turn off Rt. 33 at Wendy’s) and it’s a third of a mile down the road on the left. The pool has 25 meter swimming lanes for people interesting in swimming laps. The pool is staffed with trained life guards on duty to ensure the safety of guests. There is also a snack bar offering a variety of food choices. Lewis County Park starts the new spring/summer season with a few changes including a new park director and online reservation capabilities. Buckhannon native Josh Hinchman took over the duties of park director earlier this year after serving as assistant director for Elkins parks and recreation for two years. He replaced John Shaffer who had been park director for 11 years. He resigned his position in August of last year. Park reservations can now be made online from the convenience of your home computer, laptop, cell phone or whatever device you prefer to use. No need to call the park any longer. Just visit them at www.lewiscountypark.com and click the “make a reservation” tab. It will easily walk you through the process. The Lewis County Park offers four separate pavilions for rent. The largest pavilion offers a kitchen with running

In response to the request, Walker issued an order for Senior Status Magistrate James D. “Dan” Moody to be recalled for temporary assignment which began May 9. Walker will determine how long Moody’s assistance is needed, according to court documents. Fourteenth Judicial Circuit Chief Judge Richard Facemire requested a senior status magistrate to preside in Gilmer County Magistrate Court during Magistrate Alton Skinner II’s absence. Senior Status Magistrate Howard Carpenter was recalled for service between May 9 and May 19. Additionally, Walker also recalled Senior Status Magistrate Teresa Robinson for service beginning May 20, which will continue until Walker determines that her assistance is no longer needed, according to court documents. Afederal grand jury recently indicted Clem and Skinner on charges involving wire fraud, mail fraud and obstruction, according to the United States Attorney’s Office. LEWIS COUNTY – In 2002, Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital (SJMH) created the M. William Adler Healthcare Scholarship to honor the late William Adler, a Weston businessman, historian, and long-time member of the SJMH board of directors. The scholarship organizers
knew that with Adler’s love of education and the local hospital, a scholarship was the perfect way to honor him. Over the past decade, SJMH has awarded over $240,000 in healthcare scholarships to over one hundred local students. The funding is made possible by the annual golf tournament

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Roanoke has also been known as “Bush Mills”, “Bushs Mills”, “Roanville”, and “Roanville Station”. started with an audition in 1963, his freshman year in high school. It went on to span almost five decades. After graduation from Jane Lew High School he passed a federal test which was mandated at the time for remotely operating a broadcasting station’s transmitter. His first job was in television, not in radio. He was a live booth announcer for television station WDTV in Weston. After moving to radio, he worked to develop his on-air persona and even coined his own catch phrases. While working in country music radio stations, he became interested in the musicians as well as their music. “I wanted to know the person behind the voice, so I started doing interviews and taping them,” Dobbins said. The culmination of these tapes is the subject of his new autobiography titled Behind the Microphone. “I have done a who’s who of interviews and put them in the book,” Dobbins said. These stories are exclusive and only found in his book. “I have friends like Jerry Lee, Johnny Cash, and Waylon Jennings that have shared their personal stories, struggles, and how they have endured through them with me,” said Dobbins. The book details some of the greatest conversations ever recorded in the history of country music. His book has received national recognition and was awarded Honorable Mention at the Los Angeles Book Festival. Dobbins talked about why he chose to host a book signing in Buckhannon. “I love Buckhannon,” Dobbins said. “I have always felt support from my friends here.” Dobbins spoke about the evolution of radio and how fortunate he was to have been at the right place at the right time. “Radio interviews are now a thing of the past,” Dobbins said. “Shows are now canned, taped three or four days in advance. I was fortunate enough to be around at the right time in radio because radio is not live or real anymore.” In 2008, Dobbins was inducted into the West Virginia Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He joined fellow inductees such as Don Knotts, Soupy Sales, and Peter Marshall. In 2019, he was inducted into the West Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame. By Pat Ridpath Community Columnist There has been a flurry of excitement and activity the last few weeks here in the beautiful town of Buckhannon, WV, getting ready for the magnificent Strawberry Festival. Sidewalks were being completed or fixed to be wheelchair-friendly at the crosswalks. Roads were being repaved and their bright yellow and white lines were repainted to show all of us (especially those who are as old as I) the edges of the pavement. Then carnival equipment, stands, trailers and all those rides for which the kids look forward were maneuvered into every nook and cranny at Jawbone Park and the Main Street area. Also, most homes and businesses, lawns and flower beds were being groomed and mowed, weeded, and decorated with strawberry and other bright ornaments and flags to welcome the expected crowds. The beauty salons were busy helping all the participants look their best from head to toe with pedicures, manicures, facials, haircuts and styles. Whewwww! Excitement was in the air! This morning in church a young man was heard to say how much he and his daughters have enjoyed the activities. He loved the chance to step away from the daily routine and join in all the festival fun and activities. Yet,

suddenly, (it is almost a shock and let-down to see), as I type this Chat, the folding chairs that have lined Main Street, so people could watch the many parades, along with all the trailers, carnival rides and equipment are being broken down, ready to move out to their next assignment and leave our streets lonesome, sadly empty. But it was beautiful and fun, and I am so thankful it seemed to conclude without some tragedy. Praise the Lord. To conclude the rest of the 28 fundamental beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, I am going to summarize them down to a paragraph or two and I ask that anyone out there who has questions, just send me an email (patschat.ridpath41@gmail.com) and I will try to find an answer for you. Or if you want me to send you the whole article, I will do that. Here is Number 11 of the Fundamental Beliefs of our church: GROWING IN CHRIST Growth is the principle of life. Anything that does not grow ends up dying. This principle is vital, not only for our physical life but for our spiritual life as
well. The new birth is produced in us when we give ourselves to Christ and come up out of the baptismal waters (John 3:3). A new birth assumes a death to the old self (Romans 6:4). Thus, Paul could declare, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). God calls the Christian to a new life that has Jesus as the center of its focus. Growth must be continual, the person maturing spiritually till he attains to “the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13). The growth is not spontaneous. We must continually struggle, not only against our old self (Ephesians 4:13), but “against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12). The good news is that the victory has already been won! During His earthly ministry, Jesus demonstrated that it is possible to break the power of demonic forces. His death on the cross conquered these evil forces once for all. Thus we do not struggle in our own strength. We
grow in Christ and appropriate His divine merit. Aids to growth are Bible study and prayer. Study is the nourishment and prayer is the bond that keeps us united with heaven. These together bring nourishment. Christian companionship with love and unity with others, those who have been born again, this new community, the church together helps them grow in His grace. It is an essential part of our growth in Christ. Sharing with others God’s love, witnessing for Christ is a basic part of our spiritual growth. This will always manifest itself in an increasing service to others (Matthew 20:25 – 28). Apart from the Holy Spirit dwelling is us, we cannot grow. It is the Spirit who regenerates us (John3:3). He is our Guide into all truth (John 16:13). As He helps us to understand the Bible, we grow in our conviction of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:7, 8). His power transforms us into sons and daughters of God. It is through the Spirit that Christ dwells in us (1 John 3:24). Finally, the fruits of the Spirit give evidence that we have grown into the fullness of Christ, as we manifest “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22,23). Maranatha!
I would invite people to stop by the Mountaineer Military Museum over the Memorial Day weekend to observe and honor our local heroes. Ron and Barbara McVaney have done an outstanding job of expanding the museum over the years. It is quite a moving experience to walk through the displays at the museum and to observe
the photos of so many military members who served in conflicts across the globe. I’ve known the McVaneys for 17 or 18 years now. I applaud their dedication to our veterans and their dedication to preserving the stories of our veterans. The history they are preserving and the stories they are telling is a vital part of our history as a country, a community and as
Americans. There are so many photos, mementos and artifacts at the museum you will be amazed at the stories these items tell. You will likely feel as though you have been transported to another time and place. It always strikes me deeply when I think about the selflessness of our military personnel and their bravery.
Clise’s Cornucopia
C o n struction has officially started at the Rt. 33 and I-79 intersection yesterday. I saw workers and equipment moving up and down the southbound ramp. I got excited about seeing the project start. It’s going to be a great fix for the on and off ramps. Like I’ve said before it will make it a lot easier for people to visit our town and county. Congrats to the Lewis County High School baseball team on their sectional win over Nicholas County. It’s always nice to have another sectional championship trophy to display for bragging rights. We will be observing Memorial Day this weekend. According to www.history. com, Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2019 occurs on Monday, May 27. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season. The Civil War, which ended in the spring of 1865, claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history and required the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries. By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers. For decades, Memorial Day was observed on May 30. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday. Cities and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades each year, often incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations. Some of the largest parades take place in Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C.
