Celestino “Tino” and Jennifer Abrego now call Weston home. Among their other endeavors is The South Texas Barbecue Company. When Celestino “Tino” Abrego was offered an engineering position in Bridgeport, West Virginia, he and his wife, Jessica, a speech therapist, had to do some extensive research before making the move from McAllen, Texas, one of the fastest growing regions in the United States, to the quiet foothills of central Appalachia. “With three children, we needed an affordable place to raise a family, and one that could also provide some opportunity for our entrepreneurial ambitions,” said Tino. Their research led them to Weston, just a 30 minute commute to Tino’s job in Bridgeport. In the Lewis County seat, they found a town of about 4,000 residents that offered a family oriented lifestyle, a relatively low cost of living and a rating as one of the safest places to live in West Virginia. They also found a town preparing for an economic perfect storm with the completion of the Corridor H project that will connect Interstate 79 directly to the East Coast via 4-lane US 48. “To us, it seemed an ideal place to make an investment for the long term,” said Tino. Once the Abregos got established, they realized that true south Texas barbecue wasn’t represented in their new home. Tino who is originally from Corpus Christi, Texas, and who has always had a natural passion for authentic barbecue, was inspired to share his passion with the people of West Virginia by opening South Texas Barbecue Company. “Our South Texas Barbecue approach is traditionally focused on the meat, especially brisket,” said Jessica. “We use homemade dry rubs and long slow cooks to ensure the meats are smoked with deep f There is also barbecued chicken and pulled pork, and Jessica said they offer a good homemade barbecue sauce but don’t automatically add it to their dishes. “Being from Texas, we firmly believe good barbecue needs no sauce, and sauce should be a secondary feature,” she affirmed. The early reaction to their products – especially the See BBQ on Page 5

Thomas Eugene “Gene” Brown Thomas Eugene “Gene” Brown, 78, of Weston passed peacefully in the comfort of his own home and surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, July 27, 2019. Gene was born in Burnsville on November 11, 1940, a son of the late Thomas Marshall Brown and Juanita Handshumaker. On February 17, 1957, he married Dorothy Louise Jewell. She was the love of his life, his partner in every way and the mother of his beautiful daughters. He has been waiting to see her again since she went to Heaven before him in July of 2008. For nearly 45 years, Gene took pride in doing skill work as a glass blower. He worked for WV Glass for 37 years and Louie Glass until it closed. Gene loved the outdoors of West Virginia. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and taking in the sights while traveling in the camper with his girls. He and his best friend Ed were rarely apart in the summer and they loved shopping yard sales together. Among treasures he sought were new bells for his collection. He always said, “No two dingers are the same.” Left behind to miss Gene’s own unique ring are his favorite belles, his daughters: Connie Sue Sears and husband, Evan, and Rebecca Ann Kayser both

of Weston; three grandchildren: Lacinda Sue Gainer and fiancé, Jeffrey Henline, Sarah Leigh Snider and companion, Josey Rose, and Walter Thomas Levi Snider; three great-grandchildren: Kayden, Zaybian and Waylon Rose; two step-grandchildren: Ryan Sears and wife, Stephanie, and Brittany Sears and companion, Kevin Fuss; four step-great-grandchildren: Everly Ann Fuss, and Dalton, Taya and Kember Sears; his best friend, Ed Clark; and K9 comrade, Cinnamon. We, at Pat Boyle Funeral Home and Cremation Service located at 144 Hackers Creek Rd. in Jane Lew, are honored and privileged to serve the family of Thomas Eugene “Gene” Brown. Online condolences may be expressed at www. PatBoyleFuneralHome.com.

Annual Democratic Committee Free Swim a Splashing Success Over 250 children and adults enjoyed the lifeguard supervised free swim at the Lewis County Park sponsored by the Lewis County Democratic Executive Committee. The weather cooperated fully. The group, in conjunction with the Lewis County Young Democrats and the Democrat Women, served soda, water, chips and fruit. “This is our 10th year of sponsoring the swim,” said Bob Stultz, Chair of the Democrat Executive Committee. “When we started this project, we were looking for ways to give back to the community in a nonpolitical way. We hoped to show that we are dedicated to helping the area and providing safe activities for children to enjoy. This free swim has exceeded our hopes each year.” Allie Clark from the Young Democrats invited young people to check out the group which sponsors many varied activities from teas to painting to participating in all local events. Lewis First activities are high on their list of community service projects. Readers can check out their activities on Facebook. Senators Mike Romano and Doug Facemire usually participate in the annual swim, but this year, they were in Charleston in legislative session. The Lewis County Park is a great venue for getting people together. The Democrat Executive Committee will continue this non-partisan tradition next year.

Summer Music Showcase in Bridgeport on Aug. 3

Summer Music Showcase, a multi-genre concert featuring a barbecue buffet and a charity raffle, is set for Saturday, August 3, in the Benedum Civic Center in Bridgeport, West Virginia, according to event organizers. The showcase is being presented by Decon Blues, a musical project started by Bridgeport businessman, Bob Workman, and saxophonist, Karen Greene, a Harrison County native now based in Atlanta. Their band served as host band for the Concert of the Decade last April 7 in the Bridgeport Conference Center for the 10th anniversary celebration of the West Virginia Jazz Society. 30 different artists participated with three bands that played throughout the evening in varying formats and styles. “The diverse music format and the buffet, together with some cool raffle prizes, turned out to be a big hit,” said Workman, drummer and spokesperson for Decon Blues. “So we thought we’d do the same thing on August 3. If this Summer Music Showcase works well, we may have something we can do regularly.” Plans are to sell $35 raffle tickets that include the draw-

ing for prizes, the concert and a buffet with proceeds to support educational initiatives of the West Virginia Jazz Society, Inc. Workman said the concert will feature ‘artists both new and familiar’ performing a variety of music styles from country to blues to rock to jazz. The evening’s music fare begins with a half hour set by a “young country diva” from Elkins, Gracie Metheny. Metheny is a protégé of guitarist/vocalist and music producer, Seth Maynard. “Gracie is someone special,” said Maynard from Seth 1 Productions, his Elkins, West Virginia studio. “She’s just 15 years old but has been studying voice and guitar for since she was just five years old. I consider her a phenomenal talent. Two stellar jazz guitarists will follow Matheny with a 45-minute set of jazz, blues and popular American music. Vince Lewis, the Greenbrier Resort’s resident guitarist, will join Dan Baker, a Western Pennsylvania-based artist, classically trained and adept in many genres, including bluegrass. “Vince and Dan are first call artists for the West Virginia Jazz Society,” said Workman. “We are looking

forward to an artistic collaboration of the highest order. They played together for the first time at the Concert of the Decade, and the axe man chemistry was immediate.” Wrapping up the evening will be Decon Blues with Karen Greene joining the band thanks to a convenient schedule that will allow a rehearsal gig in Elkins the night before for the Elkins Jazz Walk. The Decon Blues lineup is Workman (drums), Davin Seamon (keyboards), Terry Hotsinpillar (percussion/ vocals), Phil Wyatt (sax/vocals), Seth Maynard (guitar/ vocals), and Chris McGraw (bass). Matheny, Lewis and Baker will be asked to sit in at times during the Decon Blues set. “We’re leaving lots of room for improvisation, of course,” added Workman. “This is billed as a concert but it seems to be turning into more of a great summertime community party.” The South Texas Barbecue Company is owned and operated by Tito and Victoria Abrego, experienced specialists in smoking and serving barbecued meats. Their buffet will be served from 6:30pm to 8pm. Included are pull pork and chicken prepared on the mobile smoker that accompa-

nies each catering job. Salads, desserts and coffee/tea/water are also included. The event is BYOB and a large cooler will be provided for the convenience of guests. Donation for the raffle is $35 and includes reserved seating for the buffet and show. To purchase tickets, message Eric Spelsberg at 304-517-9813 or email to: WVJazzSociety@aol.com. Tickets are also available directly through members of the band. As of this release, the raffle prizes are: 1. a collection of vintage jazz LPs with a portable turntable, 2. copy of The Jazz Standards (a history of hundreds of jazz songs that can be used as a reference volume) and other music themed books 3. one West Virginia Jazz Society Gold Pass, and 4. One selection of gift certificates from local merchants. The Summer Music Showcase is made possible by generous sponsorship from the Barbara B. Highland Fund, Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation, MVB Bank, The Media Man LLC, the Bridgeport Arts & Heritage Foundation and the West Virginia Jazz Society, Inc.

LEWIS COUNTY COMMUNITY GUIDE

FROM THE FRONT

BBQ from Page 1 brisket – has been very positive, they said. “We’re really happy and enthused with the response to our marketing efforts,” said Tino. “We’ve been doing some pop up events like the Weston Farmers Market on Saturday mornings and that led to catering the Summer Music Showcase in Bridgeport on August 3.” The Abregos believe the Summer Music Showcase will provide an opportunity to introduce their products to a regional and multi state audience. Citing efforts to position Weston as a destination for tourists, Jessica Abrego believes the potential is present for major development supported by a big increase in travelers coming through the area. “We would love to see our business continue to grow into a fully fledged establishment that offers the best barbecue in West Virginia,” she said. “The concept of a ‘Fine Dining Village” that offers a diverse set of dining experiences would surely be a tourist attraction. That, coupled with the completion of Corridor H, has so much potential to make a Weston a must visit destination.” The Summer Music Showcase will be held at the Benedum Civic Center on Main Street in Bridgeport on Saturday, August 3, to raise funds for music education. Tickets are $35 and include the South Texas Barbecue Company buffet. The music will be a variety of country, blues, soft rock and jazz offered from 7pm to 9:30pm, with raffle drawings throughout the evening. The South Texas Barbecue Company stays true to their Tex-Mex roots by providing handmade flour tortillas that are rolled daily and used in their barbecue Tacos. Night Out from Page 1 entire Lewis County population to enjoy. We do this to strengthen our community bond. National Night Out is entirely volunteer and sponsorship-based. Currently, they have 12 bikes for giveaway as part of the event plus other prizes. “We have lots of individual and business sponsors including Shentel, Sprint, Lewis County Democrat Women’s Group, Bill and Barb Tucker, Ray Smith, Brit Cooper, and more,” Barlett said. “The opportunity for community organizations and emergency service personnel to reach the population they serve is the primary purpose of this event”, Barlett said. “The Weston Central Neighborhood Watch, run by BJ Brooks, started this event years ago and it is an amazing way to bring our county closer together. It is entirely free to the public and a great place for families to see what Lewis County has to offer them.” Parking will be available at the old Sav-a-Lot parking lot. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August (Texas and select areas celebrate on the first Tuesday in October). Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more. If you are interested in sponsoring a prize on behalf of yourself or your business, or would like to set up as an organization, please contact Brittney Barlett via Facebook or text/call at 304-997-4628.

SJMH from Page 1 handling the psychological effects of a patient’s condition. The program is customized to meet the patient’s needs under the medical direction of Dr. Frank Scattaregia. The ultimate goal of the program is to rehabilitate the patient to his or her maximum potential and reduce the number of life-threatening respiratory occurrences or hospitalizations. Family members are welcome to participate in the treatment program and learn how to support the patient. During the eight- to twelveweek program, staff takes the time to get to know the patient by completing a medical history, conducting diagnostic testing and a physical evaluation, and by completCommission from Page 1 level, and we are pleased with all of the work they have done to date.” “We are looking at all new graphics, and are working with the WV Tourism Office to get some new photography of the area,” she said adding that local photographers with images to share should contact her office for more information. The CVB continues to increase its online and social media presence with more

ing an assessment of the patient’s knowledge about their condition, and pulmonary disease in general. An important part of the program includes setting goals for patients. Once goals are set, each patient’s progress is monitored and adjusted as necessary. This ensures that the patient receives the education and training most appropriate for him/ her. Each patient will undergo supervised exercise therapy to improve muscle conditioning and cardiovascular fitness. Exercise will be tailored to the patient’s specific needs and abilities. Types of exercise may include walking, stair climbing, strength condi-

tioning, stretching maneuvers, and respiratory muscle training. The education component of the program is conducted in small group sessions or on an individual basis. The program coordinators believe that knowledge is a key for developing one’s pulmonary rehabilitation potential. Some of the subjects discussed in education and training sessions include: - Breathing retraining - Inhaler (MDI) instruction - Anatomy of the respiratory system - Coping with chronic disease - Medication usage - Importance of exercise Once a patient has com-

pleted the program, staff help develop a plan for selfmanagement and treatment at home. The patient may experience a number of improvements, including: - Control and alleviate the symptoms and complications of respiratory impairment - Achieve optimal capacity to carry out activities of daily living - Decrease psychological symptoms such as anxiety or depression - Increase exercise tolerance - Reduce hospitalizations If a patient would like more information or to participate in the program, they can call 304-269-8099 or ask their physician. •Submitted by the SJMH Marketing Department

Attorney General Morrisey's Disability Fraud Unit Eclipses $18.5 Million in Savings CHARLESTON — Attorney General Patrick Morrisey’s disability fraud partnership continued a record-breaking pace in the second quarter, generating $2.24 million in projected savings from April to June – more than any quarter since its start in West Virginia. The three-month tally pushes the unit’s total savings to more than $18.5 million for state and federal governments since its inception in the Mountain State. “This unit continues to achieve great things for our state,” Attorney General Morrisey said. “We must work in every way to root out fraud, waste and abuse. Doing so in this context preserves Social Security disability for those who need it most.” The Cooperative Disability

Investigations Unit, a partnership with the Social Security Administration, investigates suspicious or questionable disability claims. It investigates beneficiaries, claimants and any third party who facilitate fraud. The unit’s findings help disability examiners make informed decisions and ensure payment accuracy, while also equipping state and federal prosecutors with the facts needed to secure a conviction. This, in turn, generates significant savings for taxpayers. CDI Units help resolve questions of potential fraud, in many instances, before benefits are ever paid. The Attorney General’s Office joined the program in December 2015, making it a first-of-its-kind unit for West Virginia.

The state’s unit joins two investigators and an analyst from the Attorney General’s Office with representatives from SSA, its Office of the Inspector General and the state’s Disability Determination Section. Nationally, the CDI program is one of the most successful anti-fraud initiatives with regard to federal disability programs. It operates 43 units covering 37 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. This fall, the Attorney General’s Office will begin its aggressive fight against Medicaid fraud when it assumes control over the state’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. The move will save taxpayers significant monies, yield efficiency and effectiveness to the

benefit of the taxpayer and join West Virginia with more than 40 other state attorneys general whose offices oversee their states’ Medicaid fraud units. The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit’s transfer is a credit to Senate Bill 318, which received the Governor’s signature and passed the Legislature with bipartisan support in the state Senate earlier this year. Manchin announces Green Bank funding

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Manchin (D-WV) announced yesterday that the National Science Foundation (NSF) decision to keep the Green Bank Observatory in Pocahontas County open. In 2012, NSF recommended divesting the facility. In response, as a member of the Appropriations Committee overseeing NSF’s budget, Senator Manchin made sure to include provisions in the 2018 spending bill preventing NSF from divesting itself of facilities and encouraging it to work with federal, academic, and private sector partners to develop plans for future operations.

Green Bank Observatory, located in Pocahontas County, was established in 1957 as the first site of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO). In 2003, the 100-meter Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, the largest fully steerable object in the world, went into operation. In 2012, NSF’s Division of Astronomical Sciences (AST) recommended divestment of the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) from the AST portfolio, stating that its “capabilities are not as critical to New World New Horizons science goals as the higher- ranked facilities.” On November 8th, 2017, NSF published a draft Environmen-

tal Impact Statement (EIS) outlining plans to reduce its scientific activities at Green Bank from approximately $13 million to $2 million per year by supplementing funding from other sources. In response, Senator Manchin worked to include language through the Appropriations Committee in the FY18 Omnibus preventing NSF from divesting itself of facilities, instead directing it to work with federal, academic, and private sector partners to develop plans for collaboration at the site for future operations. Similarly, language was included encouraging NASA’s use of GBT to support

its orbital debris monitoring activities. In 2018, NSF showed its willingness to invest in the future of GBO by awarding $1.3 million to implement a laser ranging measurement system on GBT that will measure any surface distortions very accurately, allowing the GBT to be focused precisely both day and night. This will increase the available usable time of the telescope at its highest operating frequencies by as much as 1,000 hours every year, with a corresponding increase in the scientific output of the GBT and its utility to the US scientific community for a broad range of investigations.

Clise’s Cornucopia By John Clise Editor I was thinking back to the days of drive-ins, rotary telephones, outhouses, and when Encyclopedia Britannica was our internet source. Back in school if it wasn’t in the encyclopedia it was a lie. My wife, Rebecca, and I were talking about drive-ins the other day. She shared the first movie she saw at the drive-in was Gostbusters with her mom, Opal, and her sister, Sherri. She was three almost four. Apparently the Slimer scene in the library left an impression on her. She seemed to enjoy the entire drive-in experience. I always enjoyed the drive-in. I was trying to think of the first movie I ever saw at the drive-in but apparently my memory fails me there. I really can’t remember. It may have been The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams but it seems like it may have earlier. That’s the one that really sticks out in my mind for some reason. Remember when we had to answer the rotary telephone to know who was calling? Those crazy days before answering machines, voice mail or the ever popular… “Oh, I’ll call them back later.” I remember when answering the telephone was exciting. We would race to that yellow wall mounted rotary phone. That was our second phone. Our first phone was one of those indestructible models that came in two colors as I remember. Black or white. We had black. The ringers were so loud you knew when the neighbors were getting calls. They also knew when you were getting calls. Don’t even get started on the party line. We had one of those in Flatwoods into the mid-1970s. Makes me laugh to think about people fighting over a phone line based on our technology today. We had an outhouse in Flatwoods we used as a back facility until the early 1980s. It was an oldie but a goodie. Nothing really says “Good Morning” like finding a waiting list at the door of the indoor facilities and you know there is no waiting on a frosty West Virginia morning, or a late night trip with a flashlight. I have a cousin, who will remain nameless, who thought it be funny to throw a rock in the second stall of the outhouse while I was sitting on the other opening. Well, turns out it was funny for everyone but him. The rock splashed the contents directly back threw hole two and directly in my unnamed cousin’s face. We all got a good laugh. Even the adults got a good laugh. We kids got our second laugh, not with adults, when the cousin was severely reprimanded for being among other thigs… a dullard. This was the same cousin who thought he’d inspect the cistern and ended almost drowning in… well… you guessed it, what came out of the outhouse. Suffice it to say the next day my uncle put locks on the cistern doors since we apparently had someone on the farm “with absolutely no sense,” and a few other things I can’t mention in a family publication. I only ever saw my uncle mad maybe three times in 40 years or so. That was one them. It was the lack of common sense he told me later. Something along the lines “Who sticks their head in a cistern?” I have to say that most definitely agree with him on that one.

Pat’s Chat

By Pat Ridpath Community Columnist Pat’s Chat for last week was very long, but you will find this next belief takes up less space, a much smaller Chat, but it is not less important since it is the one Commandment that most of the world omits. As I stated in last week’s column on the individual Commandments, many people think Seventh-day Adventists are strange, perhaps a “cult,” and give one of the reasons as our going to church on Saturday. Yes, we do that because God has asked us to remember the Sabbath and, with God’s help, keep it a holy day of worship, fellowship, missionary work, and other things Jesus did on Sabbath. Some think we are hung up on “works.” No, we realize that we are saved by grace alone, but we try to make the Bible our guide. The Bible is the only safe moral guide. We believe He created us and His Word lights our path. History tells us that Sunday keeping is manmade and rather new on the religious scene, beginning around 300 AD. It has become a tradition. But we find no Bible reference for the change and the Bible says God does not change. Our salvation is dependent on KNOWING Christ. When He returns we are told some will not be saved because He says, “I never knew you.” We believe we can come to know Him in part by following His Ten Commandment Law. Christ’s character and personality are wrapped up in the Law, the Ten-Commandment-Law, as last week’s Chat pointed out. Each commandment represents a facet of His character. For instance, You shall not commit adultery shows PURITY, which is descriptive of Christ. You shall not steal, means HONESTY, definitely one of His characteristics. You shall not murder, means LOVE (which is definitely a “facet” since the Bible states clearly, God IS LOVE). So one way we can come to know Him is by letting Him write His law in our hearts. So, I just want you to know that we are simply trying to live out our own

beliefs as best we can. Don’t be afraid of us. I want all of you to come and visit us at our church. We have a reputation for being a LOVING church. It is not scary. Recently we began a conference call prayer session on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Anyone can call in and pray with us or ask for prayer. We have a Wednesday night prayer meeting at the church starting at about 6:00 p.m. Our Sabbath School starts at 9:30 a.m. on Sabbath morning with singing, then class at about 10:00 a.m. We have children’s classes as well as adult classes. Our worship service begins at approximately 11:00 a.m. Here is Number 20 of the 28 Fundamental Beliefs:THE SABBATH The Sabbath, the seventh day of the week, is the biblical day of rest. It’s a memorial of God’s creation activity. Our loving Maker created the heavens and the earth in six days and rested the seventh day (Genesis 2:1 – 3). The Sabbath is also a sign of our redemption in Christ Jesus (Hebrews 4:9), and it reminds us that He who first made all things and declared them to be good (Genesis 1:31) has rescued us from the dominion of sin so we can be citizens in His own kingdom of righteousness (Colossian 1:13). The fourth command-

ment says,“ ‘Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord y our God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates’ “(Exodus 20:8 – 10). This divine law is indisputable in its requirements. The Sabbath was instituted before the entrance of sin, and it will continue in the earth made new (Isaiah 66:23). A HAPPY DAY When we follow Christ and allow Him to help us obey His will with all our heart, the command to keep the Sabbath will not be a burden. Jesus the Lord of the Sabbath (Mark 2:27, 28) will dwell within us through His Holy Spirit, writing the requirements of the eternal law on the fleshly tablets of our hearts (Ezekiel 36:26; Hebrews 8:10, 11). Far from being a day of sadness and restrictions, the Sabbath will be to us “a delight and the Lord’s holy day honorable” (Isaiah 58:13), a symbol of our freedom in Christ. As He has freed us from the dominion of self and sin, we will gladly enter into His day of rest. The Sabbath is a holy day. The blessing of God rests upon it, separating it from the other six days. It’s a day in

which we can forget our work, our anxieties, and our common concerns, dedicating ourselves to the spiritual feast that God has opened before us. We keep the Sabbath by coming together for worship (Hebrews 10:25), building each other up through fellowship (verse 24), ministering to the needs of others according to the example Jesus gave us (John 5:1 – 17), and through missionary work fulfilling Christ’s Great Commission (Matthew 28:18 – 20). Thus, each Sabbath God gives us a foretaste of what will be ours in our eternal home with Him. We capture the spirit of the redeemed of all ages, who will gather around the heavenly throne and lift their voices in praise for their salvation in Jesus Christ (Hebrews12:18-24). A DAY FOR EVERYONE While the Sabbath as a day of rest was repeated to Israel in the Ten Commandments given at Sinai, it was God’s intention that it should be a blessing to all the nations. Even foreigners in Israel were to keep the Sabbath and experience its joy (Isaiah 56:6). Also, in God’s final warning message to the world for all humanity, symbolized by the three angels of Revelation 14:6, 12, men and women are again called to recognize God as Creator and to keep His commandments. Therefore, in the time of the end the Sabbath will stand out with special significance, transformed into a special test of loyalty to God in an era of global apostasy (Revelation 13:-8- 14:15) Just as the passage of the sun across the sky marks out the days of the week and designates each seventh day as the Sabbath, so the setting of the sun sets the limits of the Sabbath. “ ‘From evening to evening, you shall celebrate your Sabbath’ “ (Leviticus 23:32, NKJV, Mark 1:32). At the Creation, God set aside the Sabbath and blessed it (Genesis 2:1 – 3). Now, He set us apart as His people and blesses us (1 Peter 2:9, 10). Week after week, as we observe the Sabbath, we are assured that this is a sign between us and God that we may know that “ ‘ “I am the Lord, who makes you holy” ‘ “ (Exodus 31:13)

COMMUNITY

Lewis County Blueprint is up and running

By John Clise Editor

As the only county chosen West Virginia to participate in the Blueprint Communities project, organizers went right to work hosting five kick-off to promote the project, and to gain input from the community on what concerns them the most. In the recent final event held at Lewis County Park, Kevin Stalnaker, group leader, stressed the importance of the meetings was to gain input from county residents, civic groups as well as other organizations regarding what they see as important to the future development of Lewis County. “We had five kick-off events because we wanted to the entire community,” Stalnaker said noting it is a 10 year commitment to be part of the program. Lewis County was one of 38 applicants to apply, and only one of six accepted. Lewis County Economic Development Director Cindy Wetzel said one of the top priorities of the group is to create a multifunctional recreational

facility to include an aquatic space to be used recreationally, for the high school swum team, and by health care providers among others. “We want something for everyone,” Wetzel said, adding that such a facility would be very beneficial in the winter months. Other aspects of a rec facility would include a variety of classes in arts and crafts, yoga and fitness, among others. “It would definitely be a long-term goal,” Wetzel said. Bob Taylor, well-known artisan, said the rec center could be a place to renaissance of arts and crafts in Lewis County. “We could create a meeting place for creative endeavors,” Taylor said. Taylor was quick to point out that it wasn’t just about arts and crafts. “We can reestablish pride in our community,” Taylor said. “If someone has an idea, we want to run with it.” This program assists with building strong local leadership, strengthening part-

nerships, and laying the foundation for community development by working with the community to develop a strategic action plan towards success. As a member of the community, every resident plays an instrumental role in the Blueprint Communities process. During this kick-off event, citizens will have the opportunity to share their unique perspectives on priorities that will help strengthen the community, while also communicating their future vision for Lewis County. One deficiency noted by group members is a housing shortage and a lack of population to attract new businesses, and commuters. According Lewis County Commission President Agnes Queen, Lewis County needs a minimum of 20,000 resident. There are currently approximately 17,000 residents in the county. Additionally, the county also lacks affordable housing to attract those who may commute to Bridgeport

or Clarksburg for work. “We need to have affordable, acceptable housing,” Queen said. Here are the top five priorities, according to Queen. #1. Year round Recreation Center #2. Arts and Humanity Artisans Co-op Center #3. Build Affordable Housing #4. Clean up Dilapidated Housing #5. Rails to Trails for Hiking and Biking Jane Lew mayor Ruth Straley rails to trails for hiking and biking would be a great benefit to the county adding another recreational activity. It was be safer to utilize these types of trails instead of using major roadways. Straley also pointed out the trails could be used to study/ collect specimens by county students. It could be an area for nature lovers to get back to nature without having t worry about traffic. Group member Ray Smith said the group is always look-

ing for projects of all sizes to undertake. The Blueprint Communities program supports community leaders who are looking to make a lasting impact on the economic well-being and quality of life for their fellow residents. Blueprint Communities is an initiative created by the Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh in 2005 that has since helped 58 communities across Delaware, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia build strategies toward a brighter future and access the resources needed to start making it a reality. FHLBank is partnering with the West Virginia Community Development Hub (The Hub) to welcome six new communities into the initiative. Together, FHLBank and The Hub have supported the development of local leadership, collaboration across sectors, and holistic planning in 15 Blueprint Communities in West Virginia since 2007. Teams from the following

areas will take part in the year-long process to create a strategy to build community assets, engage residents, overcome challenges, and attract new investment to the area. The opportunity to develop a consistent collaboration with diverse members and organizations within your community, and to develop strong relationships with other participating Blueprint Community teams. Past participants have developed sustainable organizations to continue implementing their strategy and plan; The development of an informed community revitalization strategy that contains a future vision for your community, and encourages coordinated investments by public and private funders. Past participants have distributed their plans, showcasing their specific opportunities and coordinated efforts in order to attract public and private investment.
