CHARLESTON – West Virginia American Water announced today the recipients of its pilot Bottle Filling Station Grant Program, providing stations to 10 organizations located throughout the company’s service area. In its first year, the program aims to provide reusable bottle filling stations to non-profit organizations, schools and local government facilities with the purpose of reducing harmful plastic waste from single-use bottles and encouraging hydration and healthy living among users. “West Virginia American Water is proud to begin this annual grant program with the goal of increasing bottle filling stations throughout our service area,” said Rob Burton, West Virginia American Water president. “This program is another way we can educate our communities on the benefits of tap water, and in particular, teach our young people the value of sound health and environmental practices.” A committee of West Virginia American Water employees reviewed and selected the following organizations from more than 90 applications: Cabell County AD Lewis Community Center, Huntington Salt Rock Elementary School, Salt Rock Fayette County Fayette County Public Library, Oak Hill Kanawha County CAMC Women and Children’s Hospital, Charleston West Virginia Capitol Complex, Charleston Flinn Elementary School, Charleston Lewis County Lewis County High School, Weston Lewis County Park, Weston Mercer County Mercer Elementary School, Princeton Putnam County Putnam County Public Library, Hurricane “We were extremely pleased with the number of applications we received, prompting us to double the amount of stations we initially planned to award this year,” continued Burton. “The demand demonstrates the community’s desire to provide health-conscious, environmentally friendly tap water options which result in less plastic waste and better health outcomes.”

ROANOKE - The 6th annual West Virignia Women in Agriculture Conference will be held at Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, November 15-16, 2019. Designed to target the challenges of West Virginia’s agriculture economy and women agripreneurs, the event will focus on education, collaboration, leadership and economic development. West Virginia Women in Agriculture Conference will focus on the more than 9,000 female farmers in West Virginia striving to develop and maintain sustainable farms and agribusinesses, this conference will help recognize and embrace the effects of women on the state’s agriculture sector. Objectives of the conference: • Share and compile West Virginia-specific projected costs and revenues for agriculture products. • Help women grow more confident in farm and business abilities. • Develop and form innovative business-farm relationships. • Build and sustain a supportive statewide network. • Share and value more women farmers’ voices. This is not your typical conference. It’s specifically designed to offer an affordable opportunity for women to learn and share in a supportive, welcoming environment. This conference allows women to encourage other THURSDAY Partly Sunny 47/26

women in an industry where they have not historically been recognized. There’s never any intimidation among them, only support – especially for brand new farmers. During the conference, women have the chance to network with other farmers and agribusiness owners. They will learn from speakers in small-group sessions, as well as larger settings. Another unique feature of the conference is the local farm and business tour, where participants can meet other farmers, and learn how others operate their farm or agribusiness. Lewis County McClain Farms will be participating in the event this year. Helen McClain and her husband Bill operate Stoney Meadows Farm on Georgetown Road, near the community of Vandalia in Lewis County. In 2011 the nearly 300-acre Stoney Meadows Farm was designated a Century Farm by the West Virginia Conservation Agency. They are the fourth generation to farm the land which was originally owned by Helen’s great-grandfather as early as the 1880s. An additional 70 acres of farm land is leased for hay. Their livestock consists of 24 cows, two bulls, 28 ewes and one ram. Helen is quick to point out that she is the farm’s record keeper. She particularly enjoys working with their flock See Agriculture on Page 5

The Lewis County Minutemen knocked off the Grafton Bearcats this past Friday evening, 26-13, to end their regular season with a mark of 7-3 and earn a playoff berth this Friday night against Bridgeport on the Indians home field. The Minutemen are a #15 seed against #2 Bridgeport at7:30

p.m. The Indians defeated the Minutemen in the first game of the regular season 28-0before the Minutemen bounced back for a five game win streak. In their game against the Bearcats, the Minutemen used some last minute sparks to put the game away as junior signal caller Jaycob Smith kept the ball on a keeper, going left, and streaked down the sideline for a 42 yard score very late in the

fourth quarter for the final 26-13 win margin. Smith went two for three for 70 yards that included a 62 yard pass completion for a score to Isaac Probst on the Minutemen’s second offensive play from scrimmage in the game. Smith rushed for the two point conversion. Jared Griffith connected on a 33 yard field goal. Dylan Wright rushed 12 yards for a score with

Griffith making good on the point after attempt. Smith rushed twice for 61 yards in the game. Probst had two catches for 70 yards. Chase Beam rushed six times for 16 yards. Marshall Hobbs rushed 14 times for 70 yards. Wright carried the ball six times for 30 yards. Lewis County will be entering the playoffs for the second straight year.

BRIDGEPORT – Javon Butler (GSC), Dominic Cizauskas (GSC) and Colin Harvath (FAIR) have earned Mountain East Conference Player of the Week honors for their play in the tenth week of the season. Butler, a junior from Elkton, Va., is the Offensive

Player of the Week after leading the Pioneers to 23-20 overtime victory against No. 6 Notre Dame College, on the road. Butler hauled in seven catches for 122 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning touchdown in overtime. Bulter also threw a 57-yard touchdown pass early

in the first quarter. Cizauskas, a senior from Mukwonago, Wisc., earned Defensive Player of the Week honors after helping Glenville State to an upset victory over Notre Dame. He recorded 11 solo tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss forced a fumble and intercepted a pass while holding

Notre Dame’s offense to just 276 yards. Harvath, a sophomore from Fairmont, W.Va., is the MEC Special Teams Player of the Week following Fairmont’s win over Urbana. He made all four PATs and added a 30-yard field goal in the 31-7 win on Thursday night.

Four Lewis County High School soccer players have been named to the West Virginia High School Soccer

Coaches Association All State team for the 2019 season. On the girl’s side, Mackenzie Hendricks was named

to the All-State Second team. Olivia Krinov earned honorable mention status. On the boy’s side, both

Jeremiah Cruz and Anthony Atchison earned honorable mention status for their efforts this season.

BUCKHANNON -- West Virginia Wesleyan Men's Basketball opened their home schedule on Monday night against Salem. This was the first game of the season for the Tigers, and they were certainly ready to play, shooting an incredible 60.0% from the field, and 56.3% from three, to claim an 104-84 victory. The fans that came out to the Rockefeller Center were treated with an exciting game

that was full of outstanding shooting performances, and athletic plays, from both sides. The Bobcats were led offensively on Monday night by Senior Dusan Vicentic and Sophomore Daylin Lee, who each put in twenty points. Lee got eighteen of his points off of six made three pointers, and Vicentic added ten rebounds to his line as well. This was the second double-double in as many games for Vicentic, and he also swatted three shots on defense. Luka Petrovic had a good night distributing the basketball, collecting eleven assists, and Edward Flohr made a few clutch corner-threes during a Bobcats comeback attempt, where they cut the Salem lead to three late in the first half.

The Tigers never relinquished their lead, and they maintained their substantial shooting percentages throughout the game. The game was a tale of two star performances for Salem. Junior Shawn Christian was the opener, as he poured in six of his eight threes in the first half. He finished the game with 29 points, on eight of ten shooting from behind the three-point line. The closer was fellow Junior Jordan Forbes. The 6'4 guard made a handful of deep stepback three pointers in the second half with the defense in his face, and then topped of his performance in the final minutes with a drive and dunk in the lane among many Bobcat defenders. He finished with 26 points on nine of thirteen shooting. The two guards combined

to go 18 of 25 from the field. This is a difficult loss for the Bobcats because they must feel as if they played well enough, certainly offensively, to win this game. Yet, they fall to 0-3 in the early going this season, and were not able to catch a break when they got back on their home floor. It is hard to imagine that another opponent this season will shoot that strongly from the floor and from three, as there was not much the Bobcats could have done to prevent that kind of shooting performance from an entire team. They can take their offensive positives, and look to clean up the defense before Wednesday night. They welcome PSAC newcomer Shepherd to the Rockefeller Center for a 7 PM tip-off.

Attorney General Morrisey Seeks To Recoup $4.9M in Broadband Fraud Case

CHARLESTON — Attorney General Patrick Morrisey filed documents Friday to enhance West Virginia’s chance of recouping nearly $5 million in ongoing fraud litigation involving Frontier Communications. The case involves alleged fraud in the spending of federal stimulus funds awarded to West Virginia in 2010 to expand broadband internet. Federal regulators already required the state to repay more than $4.9 million associated with the case. The Attorney General’s motion takes no position as to the claims against Frontier. Instead, it seeks to position West Virginia to recoup its $4.9 million payout, if a federal court were to find that Frontier’s conduct violated the False Claims Act. “We must act now to assert our claim and protect West Virginia’s interest,” Attorney General Morrisey said. “It is only right that West Virginia be made whole and another entity bear the costs, if it is proven that entity engaged in fraud. Anything less would amount to the federal government receiving double payment for the same underlying costs.” Federal regulators, in allegations similar to the much broader litigation, required West Virginia to repay more than $4.7 million related to select charges and specific invoice processing fees set forth by Frontier, along with $244,200 linked to Frontier’s alleged deployment of 37 miles of excess fiber optic cable. The federal government argued those alleged actions violated the terms of the stimulus grant. The ongoing litigation stems from a much broader complaint filed by Frontier’s competitor, Citynet. It seeks repayment by Frontier on behalf of the federal government. West Virginia, the grant recipient, unsuccessfully appealed the federal government’s decision to seek repayment from state coffers. Frontier was the sub recipient of the grant. The Attorney General argues no existing party in the ongoing case represents West Virginia’s interest. He also contends not permitting West Virginia to intervene would substantially impair the state’s ability to protect its interest.

Capito Welcomes home Vietnam vets

CHARLESTON – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) today celebrated Veterans Day with West Virginia veterans during an event in Charleston. During the event, Vietnam Veterans were presented with ‘Welcome Home’ pins. Veterans and their family members were also able to inquire about services Senator Capito’s office offers exclusively to veterans. “For these Vietnam veterans who had not received the proper homecoming they deserved, I hope today feels like the closing of that chapter,” Senator Capito said. “West Virginia is home to thousands of veterans who have sacrificed so much for our country. Today is the day designated to honor them, but my wish is that veterans always feel appreciated. The ‘Welcome Home’ pin is a small, special reminder that we do appreciate all our veterans have done to secure the freedoms we enjoy every day.” The official ‘Welcome Home’ pin is provided by the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration and was designed in 2012 by the Obama administration to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. The desire to ensure that every Vietnam veteran is formally thanked for their service and welcomed home has been continued by the Trump administration. With each pin presentation the veteran is given a proclamation from the President, explaining the pin, his designation of March 29th as a National Holiday to commemorate Vietnam veterans each year and thanking them for their service. The Vietnam War Commemoration is overseen by the Department of Defense (DoD) and to be able to present these pins you have to apply to be a “commemorative partner.” Senator Capito is the only member in the West Virginia delegation offering this pin. Living United States veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time during the period of November 1, 1955, through May 15, 1975, regardless of location are eligible to receive a lapel pin. “A Grateful Nation Thanks and Honors You” is embossed on the back of the pin, closest to the heart of the wearer. Also, the official name of the Commemoration is included to remind each veteran that this is a national initiative, and this lapel pin is the nation’s lasting memento of thanks.

Clise’s Cornucopia By John Clise Editor

We celebrated Veterans Day this past Monday remembering all of those who have served our great country through military service. Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. My Granddad Harvey served in Army during WWII. My Grandpap Clise served in the Navy during WWII. I have a niece currently serving in the Navy. I had several great uncles and aunts to serve in the military during WWII. My Great Aunt Irene told me stories of rolling bandages to be sent to Europe during WWI. She was about six or seven. I had a great uncle times about four times over, James R. Harvey, who served in the American Civil War as a Union soldier. I have his paperwork for being inducted and released from service. It’s pretty cool stuff. President and General George Washington is in my family tree through marriage. I have a cousin very into genealogy. General Washington is right there. That just more makes me chuckle than anything else. Lewis County is rich with honors to our nation’s veterans. We are home to the the Mountaineer Military Museum located in Weston next to the Weston Volunteer Fire Department. Operated by Ron and Barbara McVaney, the facility offers not only an extensive display, including vintage photographs, uniforms, artifacts and dioramas, but also a very personal experience for visitors. The museum includes personal and historical items from the Korean, Vietnam and Civil War as well as a reflection room to honor the fallen. You can visit them on Facebook for more information on tours and activities. The Louis Bennett Library and War Memorial is also in honor of one of Weston’s most famous sons-- Louis Bennett Jr. He was born September 22, 1894, in Weston, the third child of Louis and Sallie Maxwell Bennett. Both parents were from prominent families, and his father was influential in West Virginia politics. The younger Louis showed signs of being mechanically inclined at an early age and at age 12 built both a motorcycle and an automobile. He was educated in New Jersey and Pennsylvania before enrolling at Yale in 1913, where he was a member of the lacrosse and wrestling teams. Louis Bennett Jr. graduated from Yale in 1917. On August 24, 1918, the younger Bennett, serving in the British Royal Flying Corps, on the frontlines in France, was shooting down balloons over Provin when his plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire and fell near Marguillies. The Germans freed him from the plane still alive but badly burned and took him to the German Field Hospital in Wavrin, where he died. Originally buried in Europe, the body of Louis Bennett Jr. was disinterred after the war and is buried in Machpelah Cemetery in Weston. His mother Sally donated the family home that serves as the library and war memorial. Even the Weston State Hospital, now known as the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum played a part in the Civil War. There are so many other stories of veterans from Lewis County that have served our country in times of peace and war. My good friend and Weston City Councilman Steve Weaver served our nation with distinction in the United States Air Force during the Gulf War. I like to give him credit as he tends to shy away from that sort of thing. While the holiday is commonly printed as Veteran’s Day or Veterans’ Day in calendars and advertisements (spellings that are grammatically acceptable), the United States Department of Veterans Affairs website states that the attributive (no apostrophe) rather than the possessive case is the official spelling “because it is not a day that ‘belongs’ to veterans, it is a day for honoring all veterans.

Central WV Aging Services announced that Ray Clifford Strader will serve as the Parade Marshal for the annual Veterans Day Parade on Monday, November 11, at 11 a.m. in Gassaway. The reason I mention this is because Clifford was in my high-school class and we graduated in 1951. He had 12 siblings, which I didn’t remember! He joined the Army in 1953 and was sent to Fort Hood, Texas, for Basic Training, but after only five days in boot camp, he was sent to the Motor Pool to teach the men how to drive anything from a Jeep up to a 70 mm tank. He had to teach them because there were only three of them that could drive. Then when they hit the firing range, it was chaos. No one knew how to do anything. After they fired the first round, the division Commander asked Clifford where he learned to shoot. He said he learned from shooting squirrels. So teaching marksmanship was his job for the next two years. He is now a member of the American Legion and continues to serve in different capacities. He has been the Commander of the American Legion for twelve years, not assisting the Color Guard with funerals for Veterans. I am so proud of him. We all should be! (I got information about Clifford

Strader from November 5th edition of the Braxton Citizens’ News. Veterans’ Day “Eve”! I am thinking about my own experience with service-related activities. I remember the excitement and concern in my parents and grandparents voices on December 7, 1941 when I was six years old. We had no TV and got pictures from the newsreels they ran before movies at the theater on the rare occasions when we went to a movie. My most horrible memories are of the radio news broadcasts about the war, (WORLD WAR II, later KOREA and VI ETNAM.) I was so frightened that I had nightmares of enemy soldiers coming down over the hills into Burnsville. (That is laughable now, but not to me then. We were a tiny town with very little industry or anything else, really, and no reason for invasions by enemies, but it was real to me.) Bless their hearts, though, my parents knew that I had to be sent elsewhere when the news was on because I was so scared. Like so many people of those days, everyone listened to the news regularly. I remember my dad or my grandfathers, if I was visiting

one of them, sitting very close to their radios and listening to every word. My grandfather McNemar had sons and nephews in the service and he would try to figure out where they were – where in Europe or where in the South Pacific, by the censored airmail letters he would get from them. But I also remember that when the flag went by in parades, in the movie news shorts, or in town, I was thrilled. At a very young age, I remember that when I got to see parades or activities where men wore their uniforms and carried flags and guns I was thrilled and had goose bumps. I still am thrilled to tears at times when the National Anthem is sung, or other songs, like, “You’re a grand old flag. You’re a high-flying flag, and forever in peace may you wave. You’re the emblem of the Land we love, The home of the free and the brave.” Or Kate Smith singing “God Bless America!” I don’t think the millennials or whatever the younger Americans are called anymore will ever have the deep, wonderful feeling of adoration (or what word can I use? It is almost like falling in love and I have done that a few times in my life, too!). My earliest memories are

of the Red-Cross ladies folding bandages in a room at a building on Bridge Street (I think it is). I think they all had on aprons with Red Crosses on them. I was very impressed by their dedication. I wished I were old enough to help them. I remember also having air raids when blinds must be on the windows or we had to crawl under the desks at school. But, you know, these days it is not so upsetting to see and hear about war. Our lives are filled with pictures of tragedies of all kinds, and even the entertainment that many choose are full of horrible painful, ugly happenings. We can only find peace in believing that God is planning a better future for those who come to know that He never meant for this earth to be filled with violence. (Genesis 6:5) That is why He destroyed it with a flood, and will finally destroy it with fire that will purify it and He will create it into the beautiful Eden He wanted for us in the first place. If we believe He loved us so much, He sent His own Son to pay the penalty for our sins so we, when we believe and accept His sacrifice, the wiping out all our sins, can be part of the wonderful future. Oh, if only we would each one believe and accept Christ’s sacrifice as payment for our sins and find peace in believing in His love and the wonderful future He has planned for us. Maranatha!

Capito, Manchin announce $7 million in EDA grants

CHARLESTON – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (DWV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, have announced a series of economic development grants totaling $7,049,375 for eight projects throughout the state. Funding is provided by the Economic Development Administration (EDA). “I am glad to see that the Economic Development Administration (EDA) is

supporting West Virginia by investing in our regional economies and infrastructure which is essential to creating good paying jobs, boosting economic development and improving the lives of all residents and businesses across West Virginia. I truly believe West Virginians are the most dedicated and hardworking individuals and through these investments that create jobs, our people will be able to prove it. As a member of the Senate Appro-

priations Committee, I will continue to fight for federal funding that strengthens and diversifies our economy, and supports West Virginians and their goals,” said Senator Manchin. “When I was first elected to the Senate, I noticed West Virginia really wasn’t getting enough economic development funding from the EDA,” Senator Capito said. “After speaking with EDA leadership directly and securing a commitment from

the EDA to reprioritize rural communities often lacking access to capital, today West Virginia is finally getting its fair share to build an ecosystem for entrepreneurship where small businesses and communities can thrive. I was glad to host Assistant Secretary Fleming today in West Virginia to announce these grants, which will provide much-needed support to projects in every corner of our state.”

Attorney General Morrisey Provides Tips for Wise Giving to Military Veteran Charities CHARLESTON — West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey urges consumers to exercise caution when giving charitable donations to military veterans. Many consumers gladly give to veterans groups in remembrance of their sacrifice throughout the year and during holidays, such as Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Fourth of July. “No one deserves our support, including financial, more than our servicemen and women who have given all to secure the freedom we enjoy today,” Attorney General Morrisey said. “Unfortunately, scammers can use this surge of patriotism to steal personal information.” Consumers can verify if the charity is registered to solicit donations in West Virginia on the Secretary of State’s website. Consumers may also

want to research the charity at CharityNavigator.org or GuideStar.org. Those contribu t i n g online should ensure the donation portal starts w i t h https://, which confirms a secure connection and makes it less likely personal information will be stolen. Additional tips to keep in mind are: Never feel pressure to

donate immediately. B e wary of charities that ask for cash or donations via gift card or wire transfer. If the organization is unfamiliar, gather as much information as possible

and do research. Be suspicious if an organization will not give additional information about its mission, how donations are used or proof that a contribution is

tax deductible. If a donation request is for a local chapter of an organization, verify it is authorized to solicit funds on behalf of the parent organization. Go directly to the charity or organization’s website instead of clicking on a link to the desired group. Keep records. Contributions exceeding $250 should result in a returned letter confirming the charitable status of the organization as well as the amount of the donation. Anyone believing they have been the victim of a charity scam should contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-368-8808, the Eastern Panhandle Consumer Protection Office in Martinsburg at 304-267-0239 or visit the office online at www.wvago. gov.

Please contact these groups on Facebook if you need assistance. Karma is a small tricolor Beagle mix. She is one year old and weighs 26 pounds. Karma is not a fan of

chickens, but gets along well with other dogs. She is a very happy girl and does an adorable dance on her hind legs for attention. Karma

Raven Friend at the 92nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana

GLENVILLE – Each year, the National FFA Convention brings together thousands of attendees, making it one of the world’s largest student conventions. Over 400 companies attend to network and build agriculture awareness for the next generation of leaders, employees, customers and advocates. This year, Raven Friend was among those attendees representing Glenville State College at the 92nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana October 30 – November 2. Friend, an elementary education student majoring in special education, is from Exchange, West Virginia in Braxton County. She began her journey within FFA her freshman year of high school, heavily influenced by her family’s involvement in agriculture and FFA. “Once I got into FFA, I realized how important it was to me, and I realized it didn’t actually depend on agriculture nearly as much as I thought it did,” said Friend. “I learned many leadership and public speaking skills that I wouldn’t have learned anywhere else.” She competed in extemporaneous public speaking against representatives from each state. There, she was prompted with a topic in agriculture and given thirty minutes to write a four to six-minute speech. She also advocated for West Virginia agriculture as a state officer. “This opportunity means a lot to me because I’ve never had such a high honor,” said Friend. “The FFA is a national organization, and the speaking competitions are very competitive. This means a lot to me because I have worked hard at public speaking my entire life, and since this is my last eligible year to compete, this much of an honor is a huge deal!” “I would like to thank my family for always pushing me to be my best self, and supporting me through all of my ups and downs,” she adds. “They got me involved with the FFA, and I had no idea where it was going to take me. Additionally, I would like to thank you my dad for instilling my love for FFA and my passion for agriculture. It has brought me success, and more importantly, friends and genuine happiness. I also want to thank my advisor, Mr. [Josh] Porto because he got me involved with extemporaneous public speaking, and has helped me tremendously with my speaking style. He took me to a lot of competitions, and has made my love for leadership and communication grow.” Friend also credits Glenville State College for preparing her for the opportunity. “My education classes have made me more comfortable with talking in front of crowds, and they have given me confidence in my knowledge. All of my professors have been very supportive, and proud of my accomplishments.” “The Education Department and all of GSC are ‘Pioneer Proud’ of Raven!” said Dr. Jeff Hunter, Dean of Education at Glenville State College. “GSC students are focused on serving their communities. Raven is a shining example of the high caliber of student GSC attracts.”
