Roosevelt came along with rural electrification projects to bring us into the modern age. Today in West Virginia, many places don’t have good connectivity, broadband, even cell service,” said Senator Manchin. “That’s what we’re fighting for because we’re not going to be able to compete, we’re not going to be able to grow, and we’re not going to be able to have a strong economy if we don’t have

FARMINGTON- A slow start ended Lewis County’s winning streak Friday evening after falling behind 21-0 to North Marion by the end of the first quarter of action in the home team’s Homecoming game dropping the contest on a final of 41-20. GLENVILLE – The Glenville State Pioneers took an 18-0 lead into halftime and ran away with a 35 point victory over the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan on Homecoming Saturday at Morris Stadium, 42-7. Glenville State (4-3, 3-3 MEC) racked up 487 total yards of offense while West Virginia Wesleyan (1-6, 1-5 MEC) finished with just 175 yards of total offense on 64 plays. The Pioneers would take a 10-0 lead into the second quarter over the Bobcats after a 21 yard field goal by Justin Watts and then a seven yard touchdown run by Mario Pender. The Pioneers then added another field goal by Watts, this one from 25 yards out, at the 7:20 minute mark of

the second as GSC held a 13-0 lead. Glenville State’s defense then put their stamp on the game as Travon Harrington sacked WVWC’s Jarrett Northrop in the Bobcats endzone for Pioneer safety as they now led 15-0 with 1:36 left in the half. The Pioneers then managed to add one more score before the break as Watts hit his third field goal of the game, this one from 18 yards out, as GSC took an 18-0 lead into halftime. The Bobcats finally got on the board at the 11:24 minute mark of the third. WVWC drove 40 yards on six plays as Jarrett Northrop hit Chelo Teneval on a four yard touchdown pass making it, 18-7. GSC then answered back

ublic perception that breast cancer is only identified by lumps detected through self-examination or routine mammography may prevent thousands of women from receiving an early diagnosis and the care they need. Although lumps

are the most common symptom associated with the disease, women should recognize that breast cancer can produce additional symptoms. Susan G. Komen for the Cure, one of the premier organizations for breast cancer research, advocacy and treatment, advises

that the warning signs for breast cancer are not the same for all women (or men). Various changes in the breast and body can occur, including the following conditions. Breast-size changes: Many left and right breasts are not completely symmetrical, and

with another Watts field goal. This field goal came at the 6:19 minute mark of the third and came from 25 yards out as the Pioneers took a 21-7 lead. After a defensive stop by the Pioneers, Glenville State offense then found the endzone for the second time in the afternoon as Timothy Heltzel hit Austin Ratliff on a 46 yard touchdown pitch and catch. GSC took a 28-7 lead 4:19 to play in the third. On the Bobcats next possession Dominic Cizauskas would come away with an interception and on the return, would pitch it back to Samuel Thomas as he then took it into the endzone for the defensive score as the Pioneers now led WVWC, 35-7 as we headed into the fourth. The only score in the

fourth came from the Pioneers at the 13:46 minute mark as Timothy Heltzel hit Javon Butler on an 80 yard touchdown bomb as GSC went on to claim the 42-7 victory. GSC racked up 187 yards on the ground while tailing 300 threw the air. WVWC finished with just 63 rushing yards and 112 in the air. The Pioneers defense recorded four interceptions while they turned it over once with a fumble. Glenville State went 3-for-4 on fourth down w h i l e We s t Vi r g i n i a Wesleyan went 1-for-1. from an infection of breast tissue. But those who are not breastfeeding should be evaluated by a doctor if redness, irritation or rash appears. Nipple changes: Nipple discharge that starts suddenly and is not associated with breastfeeding can be indicative of cancer. Other changes to the nipples, such as pulling in of the nipple (inversion) or itchy, scaling skin on the nipple, should be brought to the attention of a doctor. Changes to the skin: Dimpling of the skin, peeling, flaking, or scaling skin can be a cause for concern as well. Lumps elsewhere: Cancerous tumors may not only be felt in the breasts. Breast cancer can spread to the lymph nodes around the breasts, and lumps may be felt under the arms. Unexplained pain: The Mayo Clinic advises that less than 10

percent of people diagnosed with breast cancer report pain as a symptom. But unexplained pain in an area of the breast should not be ignored. Breast pain that does not go away and seems to involve one area of the breast should be checked. Fatigue: General cancer symptoms can include unusual fatigue and unexplained weight loss. These symptoms should not be left unchecked. One of the best things women and men can do is to familiarize themselves with their bodies so they will be more capable of pinpointing any irregularities that may develop. Individuals can routinely look at their breasts and inspect for subtle changes. But remember that hormonal breast changes occur during the menstrual cycle, so it’s best to be familiar with how breasts look and feel both during and after menstruation.

Manchin from Page 1 connectivity. FCC Commissioner Rosenworcel understands West Virginia and fighting for rural connectivity, and I thank her for joining us here in West Virginia today to ensure that everyone has access to broadband.” “Broadband is more than a technology—it’s a platform for opportunity. No matter who you are or where you live in this country, you need access to advanced communications to have a fair shot at 21st century success. But too many West Virginians do not have the broadband they need to do their homework, build a business, apply for a job, or get access to healthcare. Thanks to Senator Manchin for welcoming me to the state to meet with students, healthcare professionals, and civic leaders to get a first-hand look at the state’s broadband challenges and opportunities. I’m also grateful that Senator Manchin has taken a keen interest in improving broadband mapping in West Virginia so we fully understand where service and is and is not and can use that data to help expand deployment to more people in more communities,” said FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel. Until the FCC establishes a user-friendly public feedback mechanism to allow West Virginians to help validate the FCC’s coverage data, Senator Manchin will continue to send speed test results to Chairman Pai. In order to send speed test results to Chairman Pai, Senator Manchin encourages you to send your own speed test results to the FCC by emailing a screenshot of your speed test (if possible) along with the following information to speedtest@manchin.senate.gov. The name of the speed testing application used (i.e: Ookla, FCC speed test application, NACo’s TestIT application, WV Broadband Enhancement Council’s speed test etc.) The type of device used to take a speed test (i.e: Apple iPhone 8, Samsung Galaxy, laptop etc.) Type of broadband service (fixed or mobile) Name of provider Address of area tested Latitude and Longitude (if available) A brief description of the challenges you have experienced due to your lack of broadband service Or, if you are unable to email this information due to lack of service, please send the information above to his Washington, DC office: Senator Joe Manchin III 306 Hart Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510 Comments are welcome and encouraged.

Clise’s Cornucopia By John Clise Editor My car is back on the road for the moment it seems. It’s been an on and off thing for about three months. Put another alternator in the car. It’s like the third one in two years. I’m becoming quite the mechanic. Well, that mechanic part is a lie. It’s been quite hectic adventure turning the key every morning wondering will it or won’t it start. It prepares you for the day. Proper dress, proper shoes, back pack for your stuff, rain coat, etc. Maybe it will run for a while. A guy can hope. I put a new starter on the car a while back. Oddly, two lightbulbs burned out while the car wasn’t running for a few weeks. I thought that was weird. None the less, they are replaced and burning brightly. Also, got the hole in the floor fixed. It was much bigger than I thought. I cut the carpet back and oh my… it was very large. It was almost a foot wide and a foot long. I had no idea. That’s all fixed now with sheet metal and pop rivets. I’d wash the car but I think that’s what jinxed it to begin with. I washed it at the carwash… and it broke down a few days later. It’s been off and on since then. Right now I’m thinking about buying a wrecked Taurus for parts… you know just in case I need a few extra parts. Don’t tell my wife Rebecca… I haven’t told her yet we’ll have a wrecked car in the driveway for before long. I’ve been trying to get my home office in order. Apparently having 30 years of boxes full of notes, newspaper clips, pictures, and other things a reporter can’t do without. In truth, it’s not just my office. I have boxes and boxes of keepsakes and mementos in boxes in storage here there and yonder. I thought I’d go ahead and start with the home office as a start. That seems to be the best way to go at this point it seems. There really is a lot of stuff to sort through. I did find my Golden Apple award given to me by the West Virginia Education Association. I found few first place plaques I won in the Better Newspaper contest sponsored by the West Virginia Press Association. It’s just a bunch of stuff. I found some noted from when I worked at the Glenville Democrat/Pathfinder was back in the mid-1990s. That’s been a while now. I found pictures from when I worked in Wheeling at the Wheeling News-Register. I took a lot of pictures up there. None of them were that outstanding. I did take one of an elementary school principal surrounded with students holding balloons. That was a cool picture. I even found some very old reel to reel tapes from the late ‘80s when I was working in radio in Indianapolis and the surrounding area. Reel to reel tapes are great. I have an old reel to reel player I traded to a guy about 30 years ago for a Mighty Joe Young movie poster. We both thought we got the best deal on that trade. I need to get the reel to reel player and see if it still works. Hey, I hope everyone has a great rest of the week and great weekend.

Disability Fraud Unit Generates More than $19.7M in Savings

CHARLESTON — West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey’s disability fraud partnership has generated more than $19.7 million in savings in just under four years of operation. The partnership generated $1.24 million in projected savings for state and federal governments during the third quarter of 2019. That pushes its total savings to $19.78 million since its inception in West Virginia. “The return we have seen from this partnership has been exceptional,” Attorney General Morrisey said. “Our efforts are helping change a culture of fraud, waste and abuse, and by doing so we help protect Social Security disability benefits for decades to come for those who legitimately need this crucial safety net.” The Cooperative Disability Investigations Unit, a partnership with the Social Security Administration, investigates suspicious or questionable disability claims. It investigates beneficiaries, claimants and any third party who facilitate fraud. The unit’s findings help disability examiners make informed decisions and ensure payment accuracy, while also equipping state and federal prosecutors with the facts needed to secure a conviction. This, in turn, generates significant savings for taxpayers. CDI Units help resolve questions of potential fraud, in many instances, before benefits are ever paid. The Attorney General’s Office joined the program in December 2015, making it a first-of-its-kind unit for West Virginia. The state’s unit joins two investigators and an analyst from the Attorney General’s Office with representatives from SSA, its Office of the Inspector General and the state’s Disability Determination Section. Nationally, the CDI program is one of the most successful anti-fraud initiatives with regard to federal disability programs. It operates 46 units covering 40 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Members of the public should report suspected disability fraud to the Social Security Fraud Hotline at https://oig.ssa. gov/report; send U.S. Mail to PO Box 17785, Baltimore, MD 21235; fax (410) 597-0118; or call (800) 269-0271 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.

is also transl a t e d “ p e rfect.” Right through the whole Bible into Revelation 22:14, where it says “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” We know we are all sinners and we come to Christ for forgiveness when we know we have sinned (sinning is lawlessness) and He forgives s and promises to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. It is HE that cleanses us. But should we continue to sin just because we know He will forgive us? Of course not, but if we have a besetting sin that keeps cropping up, we simply cannot give up, but continue to ask for His forgiveness and help. When God decided that He would have to cleanse the whole world with a flood, He said it

was because He saw that “every imagination of the heart was only evil continually.” Read Chapter 6 of Genesis. Then you might want to read Matthew 24 where you will find that the world is again in the same state, and Jesus is going to come soon. We can be ready for that coming by beholding Jesus (in our reading and thinking and conversation). We will be changed into whatever we “behold” continually. Since Hollywood has taken over most of our entertainment, we are beholding crime and violence and immorality and “sinning” continually. We become like whatever it is that we behold. Only God can help us be cleansed of our besetments and that will happen only as we refrain from “beholding” the evil that is so easily found even by our tiniest human be-

ings who learn as toddlers to use a remote or other electronic devices. People, I beg you to think like a responsible adult and remove these violent and immoral things from ourselves and our little ones. Read the Bible in a modern language you can understand, watch only clean, uplifting television and movies (completely unlike The Silencing of the Lambs – a horrible movie I just now heard about as I researched this but found that the film won almost every award for best whatever! How could we have come to this?? What does that say about who is in charge of what comes out from Hollywood as entertainment? It is certainly not a Holy God! I have never written any Chat before that comes almost completely from things I have been thinking. If you do nothing else, read Matthew 24 to review the things that will be happening in this world as a herald of Jesus’ Second Coming. If you want more information about any of these things, message me and I will do my best to answer you. Maranatha!

The holiday season is quickly approaching, and around this time of year, West Virginians may find themselves giving more to charitable causes. Helping those in need is part of the holiday spirit and who we are as citizens of the Mountain State. However, we must always be mindful of those who prey on our good nature and create fraudulent charities. At the West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office, it is our responsibility to help protect citizens from falling victim to these dishonest schemes. International Charity Fraud Awareness Week, which begins Monday, Oct. 21, 2019,

serves as a reminder to our generous citizens to protect themselves – and their hardearned money – when giving to seemingly-worthy causes throughout the holiday season and beyond. A person should never feel pressured into donating. If something doesn’t seem right about the solicitor, ask questions. Inquire about how the money will be used and request more background information on the charity by mail or email. If the solicitor is legitimate, they will likely not hesitate to respond. When giving to charities, avoid cash and only pay by credit card or with a check made out to the organization, not the individual asking for money. Protect yourself from phony cyber solicitations by ig-

noring emails from unfamiliar sources asking for donations. They are almost always scams. When donating online, ensure the URL of a reputable organization is typed correctly. Scammers commonly use similar web addresses to confuse you. More than 5,000 charitable organizations are currently registered to solicit and receive donations in West Virginia. Our Charities Division makes it easy to search for registered organizations in our database, located at apps.sos.wv.gov/ business/charities. If a charity is on file, you can view how much the organization has put toward administrative and fundraising costs. You can also find how much money has gone to the actual cause of the charity. If you spot what seems like

a dishonest scheme, know that our Fraud Unit is on hand to investigate allegations against charities. Contact our office at 1-877-FRAUD-WV. Remember that despite the possibility of running into charity fraud, giving is still a special part of the holiday spirit. Keeping #CharityFraudOut will help ensure your money is going toward an honest cause. Background: Charity Fraud Awareness Week is led by an international partnership of more than 40 charities, regulators professional representative bodies and other not-for-profit stakeholders working together to combat fraud against charities. WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chairman and Ranking Member of the Environment and Public Works (EPW) Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee, are working together to expand federal resources available to water systems across the country to increase their resiliency or adaptability to increasing natural hazards. Their legislation introduced last week, S. 2636, Clean Water Infrastructure Resilience and Sustainability Act, will help communities prepare their drinking water, wastewater and storm water infrastructure to meet the

threats posed by increasing instances of extreme weather and changing hydrological conditions. “West Virginians know all too well how flooding can affect infrastructure. I’m proud to join with Senator Cardin in this legislation that will help communities better prepare for the costs associated with natural disasters. By improving the resiliency of our water infrastructure, we’re working not only to mitigate costs, but also prevent infrastructure emergencies in the future,” Senator Capito said. “Marylanders have witnessed the dangerous consequences of extreme weather and we know that preparation

is one of the best ways to mitigate future disasters,” Senator Cardin said. “We all need clean, safe water during good times and emergencies. As a country, we must better prepare our water systems for the increasing instances of more frequent and severe floods, record-setting rainfall, wildfires and other natural disasters that lie ahead. Our bipartisan legislation takes an important step toward shoring up America’s aging water infrastructure.” The Clean Water Infrastructure Resilience and Sustainability Act, includes two authorizations: $5,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2020-2024 to create a federal program administered by the U.S. Envi-

ronmental Protection Agency (EPA) to help communities strengthen the resiliency of their publicly owned treatment works against the threats of natural hazards. The measure also reauthorizes the expanded Drinking Water Infrastructure Resilience and Sustainability program at an equal amount, $5,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2020-2024. Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis for activities to increase resiliency or sustainability such as water conservation, water use efficiency, watershed protection, and modification or relocation. The bill provides a 75-25 cost share between the federal government and the partner agency.

FRENCH CREEK – West Virginia’s abundance of wildlife and hunting seasons provide opportunities for many families to fill their freezers with highly nutritious wild game. Wild game provides a low-fat, high-protein alternative to beef or other commercial meats. For example, white-tailed deer (venison) contains fewer calories and approximately

five times less fat than the equivalent serving of beef. “Hunting is a great reason to get into the woods, stretch your legs, and may result in a freezer full of healthy protein,” said Kaylee Pollander, wildlife biologist for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. “With the diversity of game available for legal harvest, there is something for everyone’s

taste.” Hunters and their families are not the only West Virginians who benefit from the state’s abundant supply of wild game. The DNR-sponsored Hunters Helping the Hungry (HHH) Program processes deer for needy families and individuals in the Mountain State. Since the program’s inception in 1992, approximately 1,003,208 pounds of

venison have been donated. In 2018 alone, 685 deer (23,659 pounds of nutritious venison) were donated to the HHH Program. For more information about the Hunters Helping the Hungry Program, please visit the DNR website at wvdnr.gov or call the DNR district office in French Creek at 304-9246211.

Have you ever heard it said that we are not under the law, but under grace, inferring that we no longer have to pay any attention to the law? We are under GRACE. I believe that weakens the true meaning of GRACE. I think we could say that grace is the power within us (like the Holy Spirit) to help us do God’s will. Long before the 10 Commandments were written in stone, they were in place. Genesis 26:5 states that because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws his seed would multiply as the stars of heaven. All through the Old Testament it talks about being perfect. This will send many people in orbit if they hear anything about perfection. Luke 1:6 talks about Zacharias and Elizabeth “walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.” The word from which blameless was translated is the same word that

Hot, dry weather will not delay WV fall trout stockings

SOUTH CHARLESTON – This year’s West Virginia fall trout stockings will run as scheduled during the weeks of Oct. 21 and 28, despite the long stretches of summer heat and dry conditions across the state, according to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR). “We are hoping for more rain but fall trout stocking is still on,” said DNR Hatchery Program Manager Jim Hedrick. “The staff will do the best they can to pick areas where there is enough water to put out the trout for the benefit of fall anglers.” Trout will be stocked in 26 streams and 11 lakes and ponds, as indicated in the 2019 Fishing Regulations booklet. Following the procedure established in the fall of 2018, the trout will be stocked later in the month. Until last year, fall trout stocking traditionally occurred during the week of Columbus Day and the following week. “There are several reasons for delaying the trout stocking,” said Paul Johansen, chief of the DNR Wildlife Resources Section. “This time of year is typically very dry and water temperatures can be very warm, and that’s certainly been the case this year. Delaying the stocking by even one week increases the chance of rain falling and the water temperatures getting cooler.” The schedule change also helps hatchery staff ensure trout spawning is completed in a timely fashion and those large brood fish can be put out to anglers. Call the Fishing Hotline at 304-558-3399 or visit www.wvdnr. gov each afternoon to find out which streams and lakes have been stocked each day.

CHARLESTON – Gov. Jim Justice announced today that technology company Infor, a global leader in business cloud software, has officially opened its new offices in Charleston, providing a pathway to approximately 100 new, high-paying jobs for West Virginians. “West Virginians everywhere should be excited beyond belief today,” Gov. Justice said. “Anytime that we’re able to bring this amount of new jobs into the state, it’s an incredible thing.” Infor CEO Kevin Samuelson and COO Pam Murphy – along with other company officials – joined representatives from the West Virginia Department of Commerce and the West Virginia Development Office today for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the formal introduction of the new 12,000-square-foot facility in Laidley Tower. Infor, which has 17,300 employees and over 68,000 customers in more than 170 countries worldwide, provides end-to-end solutions and cloudbased software to each of their clients, based on their individual needs. “I’ve said over and over that we need to do everything possible to add these kinds of high-tech companies and jobs in West Virginia,” Gov. Justice said. “We have so many people in this state who are gifted beyond belief and who will be able to fill these spots and do incredible work. It’s truly a pipeline of talent.” As Infor seeks to add new customers in West Virginia, the company’s new facility is built to support staff growth. Infor plans on quickly hiring approximately 100 technical employees in various disciplines. Infor has been working alongside Marshall University and West Virginia State University through the company’s Education Alliance Program to train students in cloud operations, software engineering, and more

In fact, under the Justice administration, the tax on veterans’ retirement income and the tax on Social Security benefits have been repealed.
