Quick buildup caused National Guard units to be federalized. Since they represented many states, then Col. Douglas MacArthur, USA - Chief of Staff,
remarked the collection stretched across the country like a rainbow. That's why we see so many rainbow colors used with WW I related medals.
World War I Soldiers Declare Christmas Truce We heard a most incongruous sound, christmas carols sung by our foe, Someone raised a flag of truce and we met them on contested ground, We shared our food, some cigarettes. And hummed along with their joyful sound.
Its hard to imagine young men, close to the age of the shown York High School Army JROTC color guard, able to survive the Battle of Verdun in 1914. Verdun was the longest and most costly battle in history. It lasted 303 days with 377,231 French and 337,000 German casualties for a total of 712,000 in 1914. That was 71,000 per month. In 1916 Verdun experienced 976,000 casualties for a total of 1,250,000 during the war. Post traumatic stress syndrome was rightly referred to as “shell shock”. Thousands of artillery pieces raining a constant and persistent shower of explosives created a unique form of horror. Its little wonder both sides sought peace in a Christmas truce. Its heartening that it was carried out spontaneously by regular troops.
Our fellows sang what tunes we knewin broker English they replied. Together we buried our common dead Who belonged not to either side. I hear in some sectors games were played, a game of football of a sort. Sadly it was the briefest pause ere we resumed our deadly sport. In years that followed no quarter was given So bitter had our men become, There were no songs left in our hearts, after the Slaughter of Verdun.

Knoxville, tn Stanley’s Greenhouse & Farms with Lisa Stanley by Carolyn Evans
At the enormous Stanley’s Greenhouse a block off Chapman Highway, the tiny Lisa never stops moving. “We grow 80 percent of everything we sell,” she says, motioning to endless rows of flowers, houseplants, garden art, shrubs, trees and more. Behind her is an indoor field of poinsettias: red, orange, bright pink, white, pale pink and her favorite — “Jingle Bells” — a plant with red leaves sprinkled with white. Every season we have something different we’re growing. Right now its poinsettias. We get cuttings shipped from South America and root them ourselves in midsummer. You’ve got to mist them on the hour till they can form their roots. Rocky figured it out. He’s been doing it for years. The huge “new” greenhouse sits near the original older one and near the old homeplace, the house that was built on the sprawling Davenport farm generations ago. “We weren’t even a state when the land was deeded to Henry Davenport by Tennessee Governor William Blount’s half-brother Willie Blount,” Lisa says. “Mr. Charles Stanley Sr.’s [who started the greenhouse business] mother was a Davenport.” The Davenport’s farm was massive and they used to take their produce to Market Square, she says. Then in the 1950s as produce was bringing in less profit, Charles Stanley began to wonder if the farm should shift toward flowers and plants. He hit the nail on the head. One of his first employees was Arzelia Allen, Lisa’s mother. “My childhood was coming in to see Mama and building my supply of plants.” Over the years Lisa got to know the Stanleys and she eventually married Rocky. “Two of my plants that I’d gotten as a child went to our first home together,” she says. “I didn’t get to come to Stanley’s until about 1995. I always loved the plants, but I had a lot of years of working as a secretary in a variety of places. I needed to earn benefits, which Rocky didn’t have. I had to do the big girl thing. I was at the University of Tennessee working when Mrs. Stanley called.” Her job shift to Stanley’s brought her back to the plants she loved and also brought an unexpected surprise. “I had been trying to have a second child for 10 years and had been taking a lot of fertility drugs. I had thrown up my hands. I was thinking, ‘Well I have one healthy son – maybe I should give up.’ I got the job in sales at Stanley’s in March and found out I was pregnant in December. That was Abby. Years later, Abby is a fixture at the greenhouse. “My husband, Rocky, is the grower. His older brother, Monte, orders seeds and new plant material and organizes the retail area while Monte’s son, Bill, is in charge of wholesale accounts. Mama still works here, I work here and Abby works here. She has a degree in landscape design from UT. She’ll be the one to take us into the next generation. She’s running the front desk, but what I envision for her is to take us further with organizational skills. We’ve got to continue to move forward. I want her also to work more with the plants. “It’s fabulous! I need her badly. I’m off with the customer getting all excited about things. She’s more organized. Our son ? has a degree in plant science from UT and is getting a master’s in plant mosses from the University of Kentucky.

L inda Bosket is now fulfilling one of her lifelong dreams. Bosket, who retired in December after 12 years of working for Sequoyah Birthplace Museum in Vonore, Tennessee. “I’ve always loved sewing and quilting. This shop is something I’ve always wanted to do as long as I can remember, and I’m thankful to God for giving me this opportunity.” “I learned on a toy hand crank sewing machine and when I was old enough my mom gave me her old sewing machine to use. The shop has a traditional theme of fabrics including 1800’s, primitives, Civil War fabrics, but it also has a line of batik fabrics and African prints and batiks from Africa, Japanese prints as well. You can also find wool, wool kits, and hand-dyed fabrics from Cherrywood Fabrics. Start small and simple. Burnsville, nc Break out of the Box this Christmas Season in Burnsville, NC by Leah Hughs
The Buck House
The quaint mountain town of Burnsville, North Carolina, is just the right place to make memories this Christmas season and purchase one-of-a-kind gifts. This Blue Ridge Mountain town is beautiful this time of year, decked out in holiday finery. Wreaths and red bows decorate lampposts, and a Christmas tree stands on Town Square. Small businesses along Main Street entice passersby with festive window displays. Downtown Burnsville comes alive with holiday spirit Friday, Dec. 7, as carolers fill Town Square with familiar tunes. Come out and listen for your favorite Christmas carol and lend your voice to the singing. Afterward, bring the family to Town Center for Santa Claus Comes to Town.

a year round town... with a small town charm Enjoy hot cocoa and cookies, and let the children share their wish list with Santa, who will also be available for pictures. On Saturday, Dec. 8, a good old-fashioned Christmas parade marches down Main Street, complete with bands, floats, antique cars and tractors, and of course, the man in red. One of the most fun — and unusual — events of the season takes place on Dec. 1 and Dec. 8. Adam and Emily Hopson of Happy Hens & Highlands Farm bring one of their Scottish Highland calves to Ring ’N Things jewelry store for a photo shoot. The pet cows resemble large teddy bears with long, fuzzy hair. They donate a portion of the proceeds each day to a different nonprofit. For those looking to check off their shopping list, consider purchasing tickets to an upcoming community viewing night at Bare Dark Sky Observatory at Mayland Earth to Sky Park. The observatory is home to the largest telescope for public use in North Carolina. For only $15 for adults or $5 for children, you can spend an evening exploring the night sky up close. Purchase tickets here: www.Mayland.edu/Observatory. Several area shops, such as the Toe River Arts Council gallery in downtown Burnsville and One Of A Kind Art Gallery in Micaville, stock a plethora of work by local and regional artists. Whether you’re looking for a piece of pottery, Christmas ornament, painting or jewelry, these galleries offer handmade items in a variety of styles. To plan your holiday getaway to Burnsville, go to www.YanceyChamber.com or call (828) 682-7413.

Ye Olde Country Store will take you back in time by Carolyn Evans
“When you walk into our store at 7 South Main Street, you’re taking a step back into time,” says Chris Carlson, owner of Ye Olde Country Store in Burnsville, North Carolina. Just 45 minutes north of Asheville, Burnsville is the perfect Saturday trip from East Tennessee. You can chop down a Christmas tree at one of the many tree farms, then stop in for a deli sandwich and a gingersnap at Ye Olde Country Store, open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. til 5 p.m. There’s still more to do: the history museum, the farmers market and local shops. Don’t forget the photo-op in front of the Christmas tree in the town square. Chris loves Burnsville and she loves her store. But she didn’t come by either one easily.“The hurricane season of 2004 caused us to leave Florida. Hurricanes Charlie, Frances, Jean and Ivan all went through our backyard,” she says. “That was our proverbial last straw. Chuck and I started looking through real estate magazines. We saw an old Civil War home. We’d never been to Burnsville before. We flew up the next weekend and got it. The house is in Yancey County. It’s the old Honeycutt homestead. They had 10 children.” She started working at a store in Burnsville and during her free time would sometimes wander into the Amish Ye Olde Country Store. “The first time I went in the store it was very charming,” she recalls. “I bought Amish barn stars and snacks on my day off.” The store became available for sale in 2011 and in 2012 she and Chuck purchased it. She says her husband is a big part of the store, but has his own business. “I got very excited about this store, but there were several things I wanted to change,” she says. “It didn’t have a deli and it was very important to put a deli in. Growing up in Florida, there were a lot of delis and I missed a good deli sandwich. The Rueben is probably my favorite. When we purchased the store, we were in a 950 square foot location. Within six months we had to move to a larger location and in one year moved to 2,500 square foot location. “We brought in new lines of items. We have locally made crafts like goat milk soap, Christmas ornaments, aprons, quilts and antiques. Everything we have is either Dutch, Mennonite or Amish. The lady who started the store 22 years ago grew up with Amish in her community. We pull from a Dutch distributor out of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. We’ve got so many items — nostalgia candy, jellies, soup mixes, sauces. From the Mennonites in Chucky, Tennessee, we have baked goods and jams. All our meats, cheeses and butter come from an Amish family-run company. A truck comes down every week from Holmes County, Ohio, a huge Amish area. We also have local artwork – prints and a couple of original oils on canvas. We also make gift baskets.” While the couple worked on the store they also worked on their historic home. “We refinished the floors, put in punched tin ceilings and remodeled the kitchen and bathroom — all the while keeping everything appropriate to a Civil War-era farmhouse. My house is a huge reflection of my store,” she says. “Our store was originally a stagecoach stop. Then it became a carriage house for horses and buggies for guests at the Nu Wray Inn. We have brick walls and high ceilings. It’s very nostalgic. “Burnsville is a wonderful, tight-knit community, she added. “We’re in the same county as Mount Mitchell. It’s a beautiful mountain town. We have a beautiful town square. It’s just like a Norman Rockwell picture.” DECEMBER 2018 |
