Outside the Nugget, Sheridan Opera House and Masons theaters, three different lines form: 1) pass holders and ticket holders, 2) ticket buyers and 3) volunteers. Audience members are admitted in that order. When lines start to form for a program, theater staff will often issue numbered Q tickets to those in line. Qs are issued at the discretion of each theater’s staff and depend upon the popularity of the program, so all you QHHG WR GR LV ÀQG \RXU SODFH LQ OLQH ,I \RX see someone from staff handing out colored slips of paper (a Q), get one. The lower the Q’s number, the likelier you are to gain entry

into a show. After you get a Q, your place is held in line, allowing you step out to grab a sandwich or cup of joe. A Q does not guarantee you a seat in the theater. Make sure you return at least 15 minutes before the program is scheduled to start to reclaim your numbered place in line. INDIVIDUAL TICKETS

,QGLYLGXDO SURJUDP WLFNHWV JR RQ VDOH³ priced at $25—after all pass holders have been admitted to the theater. PROGRAM CHANGES AND TBAS

Changes in the program will happen. TBAs and special surprise screenings and events will be posted on sandwich boards outside all theaters, at Hospitality and online at PRXQWDLQĂ€OP RUJ 0RQGD\ PRUQLQJ 7%$V will be posted online by 7 p.m. Sunday evening. GETTING AROUND

Check out the map (page 48) for theaters and other festival locations. You may have noticed: Telluride is small. Everything is within walking distance, and public transportation is YHU\ HIĂ€FLHQW THE GONDOLA

The Gondola runs between Telluride and Mountain Village from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. during the festival and is free of charge. The 13-minute trip over the mountain is the only free public transit of its kind in this country. THE GOOSE

Telluride’s town shuttle, the biodiesel-fueled Galloping Goose, runs a loop through town every 10 minutes. There are marked stops WKURXJKRXW WRZQ EXW à DJ LW GRZQ LI \RX aren’t standing near a sign. The Goose will stop for you at any street corner.

the films Never Play Monopoly with Shaun White BY WILLIAM EBERSOL Shaun White is a competitive person. In fact, he may the most competitive person I’ve ever met, and I’ve been around my fair share. But what Shaun shares with only a handful of all the athletes in the world is a competitiveness that demands perfection. In the winter of 2006/2007, I traveled around the world, documenting Shaun as he competed at the highest level in snowboarding and skateboarding competitions for our documentary Don’t Look Down (page 15). After Shaun collected a check for winning the world half-pipe championships in Park City, Utah, it was still early in the day. So we decided to play checkers. The game took more than an hour because we obsessed over each move, desperate to win. But as the game started to wind down, it became apparent that we were locked in a stalemate. Upon realizing this, Shaun, who had moments before been poised to beat me, was upset. He proposed that we go back a few moves and play the game from there (a reset that would have assuredly won him the game), but because I had no intention of losing, I refused, happy to accept a tie over a loss. Shaun was furious (partly playfully, partly real). He called me uncompetitive and unVSRUWVPDQOLNH DQG ZRXOG KDYH à LSSHG WKH board over if it hadn’t been mounted to the table. He had just triumphed over 20 of the best snowboarders in the world—winning a gold medal and cash prize that eclipsed most peoples’ annual incomes—and he was fuming over a loss in a game of checkers. When I tell people this story, they think Shaun sounds petty, childish and, worst of all, ungrateful, but none of these characteristics are normally apparent in him. He is kind, mature

beyond his years, and never lets a day go by without openly acknowledging how lucky he is to do what he does and have what he has. But getting really mad when he loses anything—be it an event, cards or board game (never play Monopoly with him, unless you have a few free days and a deep knowledge of hotel management)—is what makes Shaun a world-class athlete. Shaun once told me that when he was nine years old, he would go to the nearest mountain, trying one trick over and over and over until he nailed it perfectly. :KLOH ZH ZHUH ÀOPLQJ 6KDXQ ORVW PHDQLQJ ÀQLVKHG VHFRQG WKH KDOI SLSH FRPSHWLWLRQ at the Winter X-Games. While all the other boarders were celebrating the victory of his

He called me uncompetitive and unsportsmanlike and would have flipped the board over if it hadn’t been mounted to the table. competitor, Shaun climbed onto a snowmobile and went back to the top to take the run again and get right the trick that he had “sketched— the one that lost him the event. No one was looking and no judges were scoring. This was for himself. And all alone at the top, he nailed it—perfectly. He proved to himself that he could do it and didn’t lose a single half-pipe event for the rest of the season. Back in Park City, when I reentered the living room post-stalemate, Shaun was sitting at the checkers board, all our pieces placed back in the starting position. “You want to play again? he smiled. Climbatology

Planetwalker, Dr. John Francis

SATURDAY, 10:00 A.M., HIGH CAMP

FRIDAY, 7:00 P.M., SHERIDAN OPERA HOUSE

17 Silent, 22 Motor-Free Years John Francis was a self-described “hippie” living near San Francisco in 1971 when a huge oil spill jarred him from his comfortable life. As he joined the volunteers who scrubbed the beaches and fought to save birds and sea creatures poisoned by petroleum, he felt the need to make a deeper commitment,

so he started walking wherever he went. When he found himself arguing with friends about whether his commitment not to use motorized vehicles would make any difference, he decided to take a vow of silence that started on his birthday and lasted for 17 years. John walked from coast to coast for 22 years, crossed mountains and plains and, in the meantime, earned under-

graduate and master’s degrees in science and environmental studies and a PhD in land resources—all without saying a single word. His speaking presentation is the story of a man who, on foot and in silence, has rediscovered rhythms in nature that most of us have forgotten. He learned to communicate kindness, understanding and empathy without speaking a word. D=

Sharing the stage with him will be Alton Byers, a mountain geographer and director of the Alpine Conser-

Why Didn’t I Free the Slaves?

Modern-Day Slavery

SATURDAY, 9:45 A.M., SHERIDAN OPERA HOUSE

Think about this for a moment: 27 million people are enslaved around the world right now. These people are forced to work for no pay beyond subsistence. They’re under threat of brutal violence and cannot quit or walk away from their employers. Most notoriously, they are sex slaves, but modern-day slaves are also doing mundane things, such as making bricks in Pakistan, weaving carpets in India, being domestic servants in cities around the world, working on sugar plantations in the Dominican Republic or growing tomatoes in Florida (for Taco Bell no less). Remarkably, there are more people enslaved today than at any other time in human history. Luckily, persistent and FRXUDJHRXV ÀOPPDNHUV KDYH managed to shine a light on this outrage. The Price of

Sugar (page 26) is a testament to what one man can do to make the sugar we pour onto our cereal a little less toxic. Holly (page 19) offers its own ÀFWLRQDO³EXW YHU\ UHDO³ revelations about sex slavery in Cambodia, while Dreams Die Hard (page 15) is its own testament about how hope is universally human. Fortunately, there are people like National Geographic photographer Jodi Cobb, who bravely went into some dangerous places and returned with stunning photos of slaves at work (exhibited at the Ah-Haa School, page 72). Ben Skinner, in writing his book, A Crime So Monstrous ZDV WKH ÀUVW SHUVRQ WR bring my attention to this subject. My answer cited an unwritten journalistic code: I had withheld action to save one person in the hope that my writing would later save many more. I don’t know if a reader or people sitting in a movie theater can really comprehend the cold that burns like acid and never ends, and the fear that you have inside. trying. Nando thought of himself as an ordinary young man with no particular inclination toward leadership or heroism. So he set out fully expecting to die—but to at least die in closer proximity to his father. What he accomplished— leading an almost-impossible expedition of two through the Andes Mountains, covering more than 45 miles of frozen wilderness—is now epic. And remember, he did this without any gear, which may explain his words: “I have a

sexual attraction to ice axes and crampons. Every time I go to an REI store, I let my hands slide through them. I think how much these tools would have saved me in time and danger during the trek. My wife, she tolerates it, but she tells me never to bring them to bed. We are thrilled to have 1DQGR DW 0RXQWDLQÀOP WR walk us through his odyssey and take your questions. D= — David Holbrooke

Will the next president be able to restore American leadership on the issue of human rights? and if so, how? and then, what do we do about human rights and our own diplomatic or military intervention? We’ve brought together people who’ve been doing some of the most important work on human rights in this country. Their discussion, moderated by NY Times columnist Roger Cohen, will focus on what will—and what should—happen when America has to make inevitably hard choices on human rights. Roger Cohen is a journalist who has been stationed all over Europe, including as the bureau

chief of the Balkans for the New York Times. He has a regular column in the International Herald Tribune and the New York Times on foreign affairs. Roger authored Hearts Grown Brutal: Sagas of Sarajevo and co-authored In the Eye of the Storm, a biography about Telluride resident General Norman Schwarzkopf. Alex Gibney just won an Academy Award for Best Documentary for Taxi to the Dark Side KLV VHDULQJ ÀOP DERXW WKH American torture of Afghan detainees (page 29). His previRXV ÀOP Enron, was nominated for an Oscar, and his latest ÀOP Gonzo, is about Hunter S. Thompson (page 18). Alex also wrote and produced The Trials of Henry Kissinger.

Samantha Power is the author of the new book Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World. Her previous book, A Problem from Hell, helped shape the debate on intervention in Bosnia and was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2003. She’s also a writer for The New Yorker and a professor at Harvard University. Ken Roth is the director of Human Rights Watch, the leading human rights organization. During Ken’s 15 years of leadership, HRW has greatly expanded its portfolio to add special programs devoted to refugees, children’s rights, AIDS, gay and lesbian rights and the human rights responsibilities of multinational corporations. The story begins with Tara struggling in rehab to re-learn everyday basics, such as tying her shoes, and ends with leaving rehab able to live an independent life. Anne undertook the project to “capture an intimate

portrait of the physical and emotional journey that is behind the process of learning to live with a life-altering injury. In a slide show that is sure to be both moving, riveting, and, yes, also funny, Tara and Anne will take us through both the rehabilitation and creative process. Azzam Alwash Restoring Eden Again “I used to call the marshes our Sherwood Forest, says Azzam Alwash, an Iraqi-American civil engineer and the founder of Eden Again, an organization committed to restoring the marshlands of Mesopotamia. “It was a place of refuge for people who didn’t want to be under the control of the central government.

Restoring the Iraqi Marshlands, which lie where the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers merge, is incredibly challenging. There are the daunting technical hurdles and then, perhaps even harder, there’s the cultural ones. Modern times do not mesh easily with this 2005 NY Times account of life in the Marshes: “With an ethereally tuned sense of balance in an element that is so plainly their own, the boatmen, who often

stood upright and pushed the craft with poles, never came close to overturning. Veiled women dressed in bright colors picked up the bundles of reeds at the shoreline and carried them on their heads along the side of the road. Azzam has recently returned from Iraq and can update us on the successes and setbacks of this important and dangerous endeavor. The Mountaineer’s Mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary BY JOE SIMPSON, Author of Touching the Void and The Beckoning Silence (page 12) I am an unashamed hero worshipper, something that is probably not politically correct these days. Sir Edmund Hillary was a hero in every sense, extraordinary in his achievements and intensely modest at the same time, a role model to all—and not just climbers. A man who made a lasting impression on history and can fairly claim to have changed the lives of thousands for the better. Heroes inspire you to follow in their footsteps, not just to be like them, but to achieve what they did in their style or better. I regard such pioneers as Edmund Hillary as heroes, even though I’m sure he would

have hated such an emotive sobriquet. The Oxford English Dictionary GHĂ€QHV WKH HVsence of heroism as: “A man who exhibits H[WUDRUGLQDU\ EUDYHU\ Ă€UPQHVV IRUWLWXGH or greatness of soul in any action, or in connection with any pursuit, work, or enterprise; a man admired or venerated for his achievements and noble qualities.â€? Hillary was all of these things and more. The great American mountaineer, Thomas Hornbein, discussed heros with admirable insight: “Who needs heroes? ‌perhaps we DOO GR ÂŤ:KHUH GR KHURHV Ă€W LQ" ,Q D ZD\ they are the stuff of dreams. For me, they occupy a special summit a bit less accessible, a mountain peak that, in my mind’s eye, has grand walls of rock and brilliant ice, clouds veiling an elusive, lonely summit. It is not a mountain I can climb, and never will, but one I nonetheless dream I might.â€? Sir Ed certainly inspired me to achieve these dreams of mine in the mountains. D=

But what stayed with me most were the Chinese individuals I had seen who were rallying behind the Tibetans. years before to come out at a time when the expected demonstrations would bring Tibet to the world’s attention once more. But what stayed with me most were the Chinese individuals I had seen who were rallying behind the Tibetans. For years, the Dalai Lama had been saying that he did not expect miracles from the Chinese government, but that Chinese individuals, denied any religious or spiritual life for so long, would increasingly wake up to the Tibetan situation and to all they had in common with these highaltitude neighbors, as well as to some of the deeper insights that Tibet could offer them. In that regard, the single most remarkable moment of the spring came, for me, when a group of 29 leading Chinese intel-

lectuals and writers released a petition asking their government to talk directly to the Dalai Lama, to stop “suppression in Tibet, and to invite an outside investigating body to see what had really happened in Tibet in 2008. Here were not just Tibetans risking their lives to speak out for Tibet, but Chinese. In a small way, and with quietly mounting intensity, the larger vision of interdependence that the Dalai Lama had stuck to, through decades of disappointment and cold shoulders, seemed at last to be on the rise and pushing his people toward the liberation he hoped for and always promoted. What would happen next, he could not say, but all we can do, he told anyone who wished to listen, is try our best, with clear motivation, and know that in the end, clearsightedness will prevail. D=

Jennifer LoweAnker’s Tale of Love After Tragedy Mountaineers take risks. The men and women who love them have to live with those risks— but often end up left alone. In 1999, Jennifer Lowe’s husband, Alex Lowe—widely considered one of the world’s best mountaineers—died tragically in an avalanche on the Himalayan

mountain Shishapangma, leaving her alone to raise three sons. While Jennifer and her sons struggled with the gaping hole in their lives, Alex’s best friend and longtime climbing partner, Conrad Anker, was dealing with both the terrible loss, as well as his own guilt for having survived the same avalanche. To their own surprise, Jenni and Conrad gradually found solace in each other and married in 2001. Conrad is now the adoptive father of

the three Lowe children. Using letters and expedition notes, Jenni will talk about her H[SHULHQFH WKH ORVV RI KHU ÀUVW husband, the renewed lease on life she has found with her second, and the stakes she still has to live with. You can see her paintings at the Telluride Gallery of Fine Arts (page 73), and she will also be signing her book, Forget Me Not, at the Reading Frenzy (page 69). D= — David Holbrooke

Enjoy the delicious complimentary organic lunch served in Telluride Town Park and prepared by Lucas Price and his talented team from La Cocina de Luz. Unless we’ve already drained the reserves, there’ll also be free beer from new Belgium Brewing and wine from Redwood Creek.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL SATURDAY, MAY 24 1:30 P.M. TO 3:00 P.M.

We empty all the theaters and close Colorado Avenue down to give everyone a chance to enjoy the daylight, each other and free ice cream. Extra hoopla will be provided compliments of the Mallethead ÀOPPDNHUV DQG WKHLU ELNH SROR FUHZ DV they take to a specially engineered cage called “The Thunder Doom.” There might be a little spontaneous unicycle street hockey, too. Feel free to join in.

For on-going good times, we have a couple of recommendations. Cornerhouse Grille is a designated Mountainfilm chill zone, a great place to mix, mingle, munch and hoist a mug anytime after noon. Plus, our excellent and generous friends from Jan-Sport will be giving away free backpacks on Saturday and Sunday (check out the ad in this program). There’s invariably a good time to be had at any of Jake Linzinmeir’s many and varied venues: Chair 8, The Excelsior, Bluepoint and Noir Bar. The Bubble Lounge has lined up live music throughout the weekend—get a hit of O2, a groove fix and help Troy and Kelly pay off their fines for violating Telluride’s noise ordinance. Las Montañas and Marz Wine & Tapas are two of the many other options for food and ale.

READING FRENZY SUNDAY, MAY 26 3:00 P.M. TO 5:00 P.M.

See page 69 for a list of authors who will be on hand to sign books during this well-liked event. It’s so popular that we’ve moved it to a bigger space this year, the Ah Haa School. Also take this last opportunity to see the Tibetan sand mandala before it gets swept up and washed away in the San Miguel River.

Frida Baranek has roots all over the world. She is Brazilian born, but her Jewish parents narrowly escaped from Poland and the Holocaust (sadly, her grandmother didn’t). She settled in Brooklyn, New York, with her British husband, New York Times columnist Roger Cohen. As she says, “I think I have a nomadic spirit, a lot of curiosity, which can be seen in her work of mixed materials that include everything from hand-made paper and iron plate to sisal and fragments of airplanes. Her work has been exhibited all over the world, including at the Venice Biennale.
