There will be, of course, a pancake eating contest, along with a host of other activities, events, and presentations, including a monster truck show, antique tractor show, demolition derby, maple judging, flea market, mac ‘n’ cheese competition, and rides. Parking is free, camping is available, and gate admission is just five dollars. Admission for kids five and under is free if they’re accompanied by an adult. “A true celebration of the arts,” Valley Arts4All is May 6 and 7, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., respectively, at Riverfront Park in Sayre. If the success of the past three events is any indication, this year’s incarnation of Arts4All promises to be, well, artful! Look for juried artists, student vendors, community art projects, handson art, and a selection of food, music, and crafts. Join Arts4All in supporting the advancement of arts in our schools and communities. See more on Facebook and at valleyarts4all.com.

Canton Downtown Celebration

Downtown Canton is flourishing and comes alive! This Norman Rockwell-esque event sees the town shut down the main square, hosting live music, food truck options, adult beverage vendors, and much more to welcome residents to gather and guests to join in the fun. This family friendly event is a celebration of the great businesses and assets that lie within this quaint town in Western Bradford County.  Sponsored by the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce, this event is on July 8 from 3 to 10 p.m. and is their kick-off celebration, followed by the Classic Car Show in August, Fall Foliage Bike Tour (in conjunction with the Canton Lions Club) in September, and the very popular Small Business Saturday in November.  For more information about this event, please visit their Facebook page: Canton Downtown Celebration.

Troy Fair

Need to satisfy your cotton candy craving? Haven’t had your share of corn dogs, funnel cakes, strawberry shortcake, or fresh, homemade ice cream? Here’s the solution: Mark your calendar for the 147th Troy Fair at Alparon Community Park July 24 to 29. There is truly something for everyone at the Troy Fair, from the traditional agricultural exhibits and competitions to all kinds of community-based events and displays, music, fair queen crowning, tractor pulls, and lots and lots of great food. Gate admission is just ten dollars, and that covers parking, daily non-grandstand events, rides, entertainment, and the fun house. For updates on shows and other fair happenings, see troyfair.com or find the fair on Facebook.

RiverFest

August will again bring the annual end-of-summer celebration in Towanda known as RiverFest, and it promises to be as fun-filled and exciting as all that have come before. The three-day party includes a carnival, kayaking and canoeing on the Susquehanna, music, all kinds of food, and fireworks (the weekend had not been determined before going to print). Many folks make RiverFest their annual opportunity to socialize with friends both old and new, neighbors, and former classmates, and you can, too! Visit towandaborough. org for more information, or call (570) 268-9203.

Wyalusing Valley Wine Festival

Nestled between Towanda and Meshoppen, the tiny borough of Wyalusing hosts an annual celebration of local and regional wines, delicious food, music, and vendors. The 18th Annual Wyalusing Wine Festival, held September 16, noon to 5 p.m., on the Tuscarora Wayne Campus at the corner of Route 6 and Fifth Street, began as a fundraiser for the Wyalusing Valley Museum and has since expanded to help raise funds for the Wyalusing Lions Club. There are typically at least a dozen wineries, each offering delectable samplings of their products. There is plenty of seating and a wine-check service. “It is a great opportunity to try some Pennsylvania wines, dance to some fabulous music, and enjoy the beauty of September along the Susquehanna,” says Morgan Clinton, curator of the Wyalusing Valley Museum. For the latest, visit wyalusingwinefestival.com.

Explore Bradford County by Water

The Susquehanna River enters Pennsylvania in northcentral Bradford County at Sayre, winding south to Towanda before slipping easterly to Wyalusing. Not far afterwards it flows by the headquarters of Endless Mountain Outfitters at 7474 Rte. 187 in Sugar Run before leaving the county on its way to the Chesapeake Bay. Keith Brown and his team at EMO have lots of ways to help you explore Bradford County from the river.

Keith bought EMO in 2018 after working there for ten years—when he wasn’t teaching at the Towanda Area Junior/Senior High School. Much of his staff are teachers too, and—like the best schoolteachers—they know how to play while also taking care of logistics, so everyone stays safe and has a good time.

Whether you have a boat or need one, you can join them on one of their guided specialty paddles or schedule a shuttle to several locations for a custom trip you plan yourself. The Wine & Cheese (sometimes Cider & Cheese) Floats are the most popular trips. Meet at their shop for gear and shuttle five miles upriver. The trip includes snacks and a tasting on the water (they have a tasting canoe that makes the rounds) and afterwards everyone heads to either Grovedale Winery or Deep Roots Hard Cider for more fun. Other paddles forego the tasting boat but gather afterwards at such yummy places as The Flying Taco and Woody’s Ale House & Grille, both in Towanda, and Old School BBQ in Wyalusing.

Prices start at twenty-five dollars for BYOB (bring your own boat), and gear rentals include boat, paddle, and mandatory life jacket. These pre-planned trips are a great way to meet new friends, build some paddling skills, and get to know some of the great food and drink vendors in the county.

To celebrate the Endless Mountain Heritage Region’s twenty-fifth anniversary, a week-long sojourn on the North Branch Water Trail is scheduled for June 2-10, 2023. If the water is ever too low or too high for your comfort, try a paddleboard yoga class on Spring Lake, a Mount Pisgah State Park moonlight paddle, or just rent a bike. EMO has all the gear and information you need to make the most of a day outdoors.

EMO is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week once school is out and closes for the season around the end of October. Get more information at EMO444.com, on Facebook, or by calling (570) 746-9140.

Painting the Towns

While you wander in four cities, enjoy the murals that tell the stories of Bradford County. “I like working big,” says artist Jonathan Laidacker. “It’s cool to envision with an entire group of people, to translate a bunch of different voices into one coherent project.” As artist-in-residence at Wyalusing High School, he brainstormed ideas with students. They came up with a landscape featuring the Wyalusing rocks, a ram representing the school’s athletic mascot, and “snapshots” celebrating the history of the school and town. The students began painting the project in 2019, which was continued by Jon in his Philadelphia studio, and installed at the high school at 11364 New Albany Road with the assistance of a new batch of students in late 2021. Jon is currently finishing a mural to be installed in early 2023 on the side of a historic train car on the property of the Bradford County Tourism Promotion Agency and Dr. Ryan Napp’s Chiropractic Center at 1 Washington Street in Towanda.

Debra Landy, of Friends of Sayre Public Art, says, “We’re learning that mural art is a unifier, a mood uplifter, a source of pride.” The two murals added to downtown Sayre in 2022 inspired art shows and celebration. One, by Sayre native Frank Evans in an alley adjacent to West Packer Avenue, features a walking bridge that once spanned the Lehigh Valley Railroad’s engine terminal; another, designed by art teacher Dana Twigg and painted on the side of Plants N Things at 107 West Packer Avenue, has a flowering tree sporting a painted swing. Many visitors take selfies posed with the art. “It keeps the artist community and the whole town engaged!” says Debra.

Well-known artist Sadie Allen (above) created numerous murals indoors and outside the Troy Sale Barn, at 50 Ballard Street in Troy, now used as an event center. The most impressive is a 200-foot-long wall depicting Troy a century ago. “I wanted to invest in our local community, to pay back and pay it forward,” says Nicole Harris, manager of the Sale Barn. The project was originally a collaboration between Sadie and artist Bonnie Bell, who died before the mural was fully begun.

“Teaching people how far we’ve come and how the sale barn can continue to be a showplace for art in the community for the next 100 years is important,” Nicole says.

Rural Retreats

When you book a getaway, you don’t want to be the only one going the extra mile. Two centrally located Airbnbs have become welcoming reunion hubs for farflung family and friends.

Stonehedge Farm Escape in New Albany began as a large family home. It became an Airbnb property after Val Bolinger, wife of one of the four owners, began renovating and updating it with her father. “I fell in love with the space, the scenery, the peacefulness,” she says. “There’s a happy sigh at this home. It’s so inviting.”

The four-bedroom/three-bath home is stocked for a stress-free group vacation with plenty of amenities and linens—including extra towels for the outdoor seven-person hot tub. The kitchen offers an assortment of useful meal prep appliances and a pantry stocked with condiments, tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. Common areas include the Bear’s Den game room, a fitness room, and a living room with a gas fireplace. Outside there’s a lot of land to explore, a pond, several firepits, and a pavilion that can be enjoyed for family reunions, bridal parties, and other special occasions. Guests only need to bring their clothes and food.

“There’s a real hunger for being in the country,” says builder Greg Jones, who worked with his wife Sandi and family friend, Sondi Strohecker, to turn what was once a dairy barn into a luxurious yet rustic Airbnb they call the Troy Hotel 2.

While renovating the barn into a four-season dwelling with all the amenities, he reclaimed wood and repurposed farm implements for décor, like an old truck incorporated into a flowerbed, and the hood of a Farmall tractor as wall art. He’s particularly pleased with the relocated former corncrib nicknamed the “Cornzebo.”

There’s plenty of countryside for hiking and a pond for fishing, though recent guests—three old friends, long geographically separated—spent a weekend catching up and watching Hallmark movies. Another party left a note in their guestbook celebrating a young boy’s first catch while fishing with his grandfather.

Endless Wholesalers

Tucked at 42 Complex Drive (behind Pivot Physical Therapy) in Wyalusing is a new shop that makes it possible to grab a last-minute gift for that birthday party your kid just told you about—or redo your guest room before your mother-in-law drops in— without driving an hour. Endless Wholesalers is the result of two Wyalusing High School history teachers’ desire for a side hustle (the shop is conveniently right around the corner from the school). Eliza Fuhrey and Lori Morrison have been friends a long time. They knew they’d have fun running a business together. They didn’t know it’d be such a quick success.

Lori and Eliza have kids and know the long drives required for many ordinary purchases. So, they rented some storage bays, started buying pallets of items they could offer at a discount, and created a Facebook page. They officially opened July 4, 2021 (a date extra-special to history teachers).

The store operates a little differently. They are open Friday 2 to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can just drop by, but if you join their private Facebook group (message them to be invited) each week you’ll see what items they have coming. You can reserve an item you want and come pick it up that weekend. They’ll have it waiting for you. If, after you look it over, you change your mind, that’s fine. No hassling with returns. Most of their pallets are bought from Target. Their core items are bedding, bath, small appliances, décor, and furniture. Toys are popular, and they quickly added clothes, especially winter items. “We’re teachers,” Eliza says, “so we know what kids need.” They stock seasonal craft and decoration supplies. And toiletries. See? Endless.

These items are always discounted. Sometimes they are dinged up and sold as is. Many customers buy furniture planning to paint or re-purpose it. Val Bolinger outfitted her new Airbnb in New Albany almost exclusively from Endless. “She was good to our store,” Eliza recalls. And the store is good to the community. The day before school started in the fall, they did a clothes giveaway. Hundreds of people showed up. Last summer they got a deal on pallets of dog beds. They sold many before giving one away with each dog adopted during the Bradford County Humane Society Clear the Shelters event last August. Find them on Facebook or email them at endlesswholesalers@gmail.com.

Stir Café

“I

had a great, stable job in a good career. So, I said, let’s chuck that and open a restaurant!” Allie Earle shakes her head as she sits in her sun-drenched café in the heart of Troy. She isn’t kidding about that first job—she was a maternity nurse. But the family business was in food service, and in May of 2022, Allie took her own plunge by renovating a building in a great location right on the corner in the business district.

“We redid everything but the floor,” she says, glancing around at the high ceilings, tincovered counter, eight tables, and two easy chairs in the front window. On a Saturday morning there is a steady stream of customers, many of whom order via the app for that mandatory caffeine hit. They come in with a wave and breeze out moments later, cup in hand. Lunches can be ordered over the phone and prepaid. There is a shelf with bags ready to pick up.

“It’s not fancy. I wanted a place for a fast bite to eat and something awesome to drink,” Allie says. There is a sizable drink menu, featuring coffee in all its glorious forms, seasonal specialties, and popular options like bubble teas.

Acai bowls (with a base of the super-berry puree) are huge sellers, including a build-yourown option with five toppings. There are pesto paninis, a turkey and avocado BLT, and ham and cheese with a homemade sauce. There’s also a kid’s menu curated by the youngsters.

“I got my nephew mac and cheese once and he peered in the bowl, sat back and said, ‘It’s not orange.’” Allie laughs. “Please note, our mac and cheese is only made with orange cheese.” Between that and the PB&J, you can see why there are a half dozen kiddos bouncing around the place while Mom and Dad caffeinate for the day.

There are vegetarian and gluten-free options for the health conscious, and ice cream in the warm weather for the rest of us. In fact, Allie used her prime location to put an order window in the side of the building for summer use. Italian gelato is a village favorite.

Stir is located at 1119 West Main Street in Troy. Look for the perpendicular parking and you might luck out with a spot in front. They are closed Monday, open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the week, and till 3 p.m. on weekends. Find them on Facebook or call (570) 297-1194.

Keir Family Distillery

Jennifer and Sam are the third generation of Keir’s to build their life on these 300-plus acres in Warren Center. But they’re the first to have a distillery. In fact, theirs is the only such offering in Bradford County. It’s truly the Keir Family Distillery, with Jennifer’s dad making much of the furniture and others lending a hand during busy times. Open only weekends, there is often live music in the other side of the barn with musicians on a makeshift stage in front of the back wall of the barn—missing boards and all.

The young couple wears the slightly shocked expressions that come with a greater success than you hoped for. “Four hundred people for the grand opening in June,” Jennifer says with a disbelieving smile. “It was crazy.”

Vodka, whiskey, bourbon, and a menu of liqueurs is written on a slate board above a handmade bar top, illuminated by pendant lights attached to yokes. Fitting, since it is a barn.

If you aren’t paying attention, you could blow right by the distillery. But that would be a mistake. The place has a vibe that feels like you’ve come to visit family and they’ve brought out some bottles. You can do flights to taste a few at a time. Or try one of the cocktails Jennifer has created. The space is long and narrow and seems to have invented the word “cozy.” Everyone chats equally between friends and strangers, while the popcorn machine chirps along and the crockpot bubbles with meatballs. The opposite wall features vintage newspapers that were found when the barn was gently renovated. Family photos show the Keir tribe through the decades.

Have a Mildred’s Betty Boop, which swirls the orange-almond and lemon liqueurs together with cranberry juice, or a Shotgun Joe, whose tangy bourbon warms nearly as well as the cheerful company. Don’t let the brown sugar fool you—this isn’t sweet so much as spicy with a fairly good punch to it. The cherry liqueur would be amazing over ice cream. They produce a fine product with a sincerity you don’t find much anymore, and they are gracious and welcoming to all who cross their door. If they weren’t succeeding, that would be a shock.

The Keir Family Distillery at 469 Painter Road, Warren Center, is open Friday 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday 2 to 10 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m. Go to kfdistillery.com, follow them on Facebook, or call (570) 250-3580.

Mountain Lake Winery

Aquarter of a mile from Mountain Lake there is perhaps the smallest winery most folks have ever seen. A barn board building about twenty feet long sits beside a small field of grapes off a dirt road near the top of a hill. Welcome to Mountain Lake Winery. Small maybe, but mighty in the rainbow of wines they produce. Owner Mike Erwin retired from an education career and decided to try his hand at grape growing. His patch of earth produces bottles from dry whites to a colorful palate of sweet wines, to the dry reds he is most proud of.

“Actually,” says employee Jay Sanabria, “I think Mike just likes the science behind making a dry red.”

Science aside, the collection of fruity sweet wines is hugely popular, including Lady of the Lake, their best-selling bottle. They use what is called an east/west blend of cold weather grapes, mixing strong flavors with subtler ones to hit a mid note that appeals to many. And those fruits come from the neighbors, like the blueberries that Jay says they crush just like the grapes to get a better color and flavor. The result is cotton candy-like and good enough to pour over ice cream. The Niagara is classically grape-y and sweet.

“We are traditional,” Jay says. “Mike insists on punching the skins for these flavors. He is a true winemaker”—with a flair for naming his vinos. Sweet Seduction, Symphony of the Leaves, Red Leather Jacket, and Goodnight Darling sound like bottles with a story, so be prepared to concoct one when sharing them with friends.

Mountain Lake’s main tasting room is in Quakertown in Bucks County. The smaller Towanda version is an intimate experience, with a walking trail, patio, picnic tables, and benches to enhance your visit. In the good weather there are festivals and musical performances on the grounds. Bailey, the winery dog, patrols the area to be sure all is well. There is a small chiller in the tasting room with soda, local beer and cheese, and chips, so Bailey may charge you a nibble in exchange for her efforts.

Mountain Lake has also tapped into the wedding market, offering wines for the reception, mini bottles with personalized labels, engraved glasses, and the help of a certified server.

To arrange a tour or tasting at Mountain Lake Winery at 391 Bailey Road, Towanda, call Mike directly at (267) 436-1034. Visit them at mountainlakewinery.com and on Facebook.

Villa Sena

In 1964, Mike Sena’s parents opened a restaurant on a hill in Towanda. The land had been a summer camp for years. They cleared just enough space to nestle the building in the trees. Today, Villa Sena still stands among the pines, though they’ve grown up some. But the menu of classic Italian American favorites lives on. Mike and his partner Mary Ott know that you don’t mess with a good thing.

“We’ve refined the recipes through the years,” Mary says, while making a cocktail at the bar, “but 70 percent of our business is from our regulars. You don’t want to change too much.”

That consistency still brings folks in, largely for a rich, spiced tomato sauce that clings to pasta and fresh seafood served in traditional dishes. The sauce is the result of generation-spanning teamwork between Mike’s mom and Mary. “Slightly changed,” Mary says with her fingers an inch apart. There’s a good size bar at the entrance, and a private dining room in the back. The space is anchored by a large mural, depicting a fictitious meeting between Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, gifted to the Kaufman family, the original owners.

Villa Sena’s prices are very reasonable and the portions, while more than sufficient, are sized to finish without a take-home container. This combination brings in families and can make a weeknight dinner feel like something special.

“We try to control costs. We use local produce wherever we can,” Mary says, referencing Farmer Fred’s just down the road.

There are also a lot of happenings at the restaurant, like murder-mystery dinner theater and specialty nights. “We did a ‘Repeal of Prohibition’ night,” Mary says. “Complete with a bootlegger bringing in the liquor, 1930’s music, and an announcement of the repeal. It was a blast.”

But one of the true highlights is the deck, which is surrounded by trees and the gurgle of a vintage fountain, which was original to the building. “Mike had it restored and turned it back into a fountain,” explains Mary. On a warm summer night, listening to the water, and admiring Ringo, the restaurant cat who sprawls among the tables, one can’t help but hope nothing at Villa Sena changes anytime soon.

Villa Sena is located at 143 Villa Sena Blvd., Towanda, right off Route 220. They open at 5 p.m. for dinner Monday through Saturday. Find them on Facebook or call (570) 265-9986.

Alliger’s House of Wings

The House of Wings sits at an unlikely Sayre corner near car dealerships and a lumberyard. It looks like it was a single-family home at one point, with a sidewalk on two sides and a small parking lot. But for lovers of wings, it is heaven on earth.

“It’s a true neighborhood bar,” owner Jennifer Wilson says. “My parents bought it in 1983, and they introduced the wing to the Valley.” The local hotels also send a steady stream of guests. But, on a recent weeknight, Jennifer knows nearly everyone who crosses the threshold. There’s a game on, and the TVs are humming.

While it is true that you can get wings in just about any bar in America, Jennifer will tell you the secret to Alliger’s success: “Sauce.” Her parents were sauce scientists, trying and rejecting countless recipes to find the thirty best interpretations of the humble wing. The sauce is so much a part of Alliger’s fame, there is a separate business just bottling the stuff for online and retail sales.

“We get orders from all over the country. Military orders from Germany. We have people driving from Vermont to get their sauce supply,” Jennifer says. The flavors of wings you can get are a comprehensive mix of tastes and heat levels, which Jennifer says is very deliberate. “Everyone can find a flavor they like.” All are made with natural ingredients, no artificial flavorings, no modified food starch, and no corn syrup. Sure, there is the usual medium and hot, but how about Sweet Pineapple, Garlic Ranch Parmesan, Mexican, and something called Leprechaun’s Revenge that is only described as “dangerous.” But—steel yourselves, wing purists—there’s no celery.

All of this translates into Alliger’s ordering 1.1 million wings a year. There is more on the menu, of course, including salads, spiedies, and burgers. The service is friendly and fast—the result of a long-term staff that knows their stuff and most of their customers. Jennifer makes a point to keep her people happy, and they return that loyalty.

“When it works and it’s familiar and people are coming for a certain experience, don’t mess with it,” Jennifer says.

Alliger’s House of Wings, located at 201 Spring Street in Sayre, is open seven days a week at 11 a.m., except for Sunday when things start at noon. Get more information at houseofwings.com, call the restaurant at (570) 888-9805, or place sauce orders by calling (570) 263-7088.

Rialto Theatre

When you’re 111 years old, you’ve seen a few changes. Back when the Rialto Theatre— then known as the Crawford Theatre—opened in Canton at 14 E Main Street in 1912, movies were silent, accompanied by an orchestra and gasps of amazement. Some patrons had traveled to visit the medicinal spa at Minnequa Springs. Some might have come from a circus wintering nearby.

These days, the program of movies and special events in the restored theater, now operated by Rekindle the Spirit, a regional nonprofit which re-opened the building in January 2022, offers more than your average cinema.

“I was really honored when they asked me to be the manager,” says Bridget Callahan. “I grew up in Canton when there wasn’t a theater, and I remember what it was like not having it.” The theater provides a venue for visiting musicians and live theatrical performances. Regular events to look forward to include Thursday Girl’s Night Out partnered with discounts at restaurants in Canton and Troy. Later in the evening a popular chick flick is shown, often accompanied by a wine-tasting offered by a local winery. One evening a mentalist came, surprising many with his accuracy. “Women say they can guarantee they’ll laugh and have a good time,” Bridget says. There are weekly video game nights, when you can reserve a two-hour slot and bring your gaming device to play on the big screen.

Seasonal programming includes a Halloween Scare-a-thon with showings of spine-tingling movies in October, and a series of Christmas movies in November. First-run movies are shown Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m., and Sundays at 5 p.m. Sunday movies are captioned. Classic movies are screened on Mondays.

In the lead-up to the winter holidays, a series of Christmas movies is screened, including two Polar Express Adventures geared for children, hosted by Bridget and her brother. “An elf conductor starts the movie, and the theater is decorated to look like the inside of a train car,” Bridget says. A chocolate milk bar, Christmas cookies, and a visit from Santa complete the experience. The schedule for 2023 is starting to fill. “Things are definitely continuing to develop,” Bridget says, looking ahead enthusiastically. “Our main goal is to be as involved in the community as possible and to make the theater the hub of the community.”

Mike’s Guide Service

“I

have a nice office.” Mike Lionetti isn’t kidding. His office is the Susquehanna River, where he guides fishing trips for clients. Mike has been fishing the river since the age of four, and has both a deep knowledge of, and deep love for, the waterway. He is based on the north branch of the river that flows through the Endless Mountains.

“The river is a living, breathing thing. It changes every day,” Mike says. “I’m on it seven days a week, and I use that knowledge to give my clients a great experience.”

Smallmouth bass, muskie, and whatever else is swimming by is fair game, but only for catch and release. “This is for sport,” Mike says, “Not to eat.”

Mike offers all-day, eight-hour expeditions and adjusts where he takes clients depending on the conditions. There are also four-hour evening trips available. And he goes out as close to all year as the weather will allow. “I have fished on January first, if the weather cooperates. If not, we’re back on the water in March or April.”

You can tell Mike is very good at his work by the return rate of his customers. “Ninety percent of my business is repeat customers. Guys that make two trips with me each year—once in the spring, once in the fall.”

While he does have gear to loan out, Mike says fishermen usually have their own stuff. “They have favorite equipment. What they are paying for is my knowledge of the river.” Mike is also known for his patience and instruction with those new to the sport.

Some days the Susquehanna is not in the mood to be fished, but high water or muddy conditions after a storm don’t give Mike a day off. He moves to one of the local lakes or his own forty-threeacre lake, which he calls a “trophy bass factory.” Of course, everyone has to be licensed, and oneor three-day options are available online.

Bring whatever you need for a day on the water, but no bananas. “Bananas are bad luck on a boat,” Mike says with great seriousness. “Look it up.” (The reasons range from spiders to ethylene gas.)

Mike’s Guide Service is located at 1271 Hemlock Rd., Wyalusing. You can find him on Facebook and YouTube and make a reservation at susquehannariverguide.com. Try calling (570) 721-1202. If he’s not in, he’s off floating in his “office”—leave a message and he will get right back to you.

Shores Sisters

This farm market/café/bakery/home décor/greenhouse has become one of the pivotal businesses on the bustling Golden Mile in Towanda. But it didn’t start out that way. It began with a pair of sisters and a field of corn. “It was either selling sweet corn or milking cows!” Renee Wilson laughs as she recalls the ultimatum her father gave her and her sister, Raya, when they were teenagers.

Shores Sisters stands exactly where they once sold corn out of a truck, but now features a building, a huge variety of wares, and a cherished spot in the hearts of locals and visitors. Sister Raya is no longer involved; Renee co-owns the business with her husband, Mike, and employs fifteen to twenty people who, “remind me so much of myself when I started out,” in 2004.

Shores Sisters has worked hard to build relationships with local growers, and makes it a priority to use meats, greens, and grains grown nearby. From coffee roasted in Dushore, to flowers filling the greenhouse and porch, to homegrown Christmas trees, Shores Sisters reflects the seasons. Now with a café and bakery featuring soups, breads, and produce, even a gray winter day can be brightened by a visit.

“No, this wasn’t the plan when I was a kid,” Renee smiles as she greets customers. “But it is a good life.” So good, in fact, that Shores Sisters has outgrown its original footprint. Renee and Mike had to make a decision—stay as they are, with the limitations of space and parking, or take the business to the next level. They took the leap and bought the three adjacent properties. The plan calls for a 24,000-square-foot building and about 100 additional parking spaces but will keep the cozy shop feel they are known for.

“The [greenhouse] café can’t be used on days when it’s too hot or too cold,” Renee acknowledges. The new facility will have full HVAC and allow for true year-round use. Not that things aren’t happening now. The existing set-up was the scene recently for a bridal shower.

“We want to do a takeout window for the café via an app,” Renee says. Look for their grand reopening in Spring 2023.

Shores Sisters is located at 1003 Golden Mile Road in Towanda. The business is open Monday through Saturday (check hours for the market and café online) but closed on Sunday. For more information find them at shoressisters.com, on Facebook, or call (570) 265-0333.

The Burgers of Bradford A Guide to Some of the Best in the County

Building No. 9. Grille—16 Elmira Street, Troy (570) 297-9947

Charlie Earle operates this establishment that made it into the top ten of visitPA.com’s best burger joints in 2021. Only serving fresh, certified Black Angus beef, the classic offerings include the Cue Ball hamburger, the 8 Ball cheeseburger, and the 8 Ball Deluxe bacon cheeseburger. All come with onion, tomato, lettuce, and mayo, and you can add grilled onions, mushrooms, jalapeno peppers, and banana peppers. Whatever burger you order, you can double the meat for $4.50 or upgrade to a gluten free roll. Customers rave about the just-grilled flavor. But before you decide what to order, listen to Charlie. “The go-to burger is our Bourbon BBQ Burger,” he says. “It has our own house made bourbon BBQ sauce topped with battered onion petals.” He had us at bourbon…

Jimmy’s Park Hotel—127 Troy Street, Canton (570) 673-8777

There’s a three-way tie for the most popular burger in the house, according to bartender and server Alex Smith. The Jimmy’s Style—so-called because of the sweet and spicy sauce the owner created—also comes with sautéed onions, bacon, and your choice of cheese. For those who like it spicy, there’s the Walker Texas Ranger Burger with bacon, pepper jack cheese, mild BBQ sauce, jalapeno peppers, and crunchy jalapeno crisps. Alex’s favorite is the Warrior Burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, bacon, your choice of cheese, and A.1. sauce. Burgers are Angus beef and served on your choice of a toasted kaiser or pretzel roll. Take it from us, try the pretzel roll.

Oliver’s Pub & Grill—1550 Golden Mile Road, Towanda (570) 485-5202

Molly Craig, a chef at Oliver’s since 2018 when they opened, says many folks order the All American Burger (your standard burger with, of course, American cheese) but the Oliver Burger is just as popular. It’s topped with thinly sliced prime rib, caramelized onions, mushrooms, Gruyére cheese, and their house made horseradish sauce. They have a black bean burger with avocado for vegetarians, gluten free buns available, and their weekly specials get pretty creative. “Our baker made donuts one week, which we used as buns.” The standard half-pound patty was topped with cheese, bacon, and caramelized onions. There was a cherry and powdered sugar on top. It sold surprisingly well, Molly says. “We called it the Heart Attack.”

58

Tanner’s Bar & Grill—875 PA-199, Athens (570) 888-6531

While the cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, and mayo is the bestseller, bartender Jeannie Hack says there’s lots of variety to choose from. One signature burger is the Thurburger, named for John Thurston, one of the owners. It’s served with a bourbon sauce, sautéed onions and peppers, and American cheese. Jeannie’s favorite is Tanner’s Melt, a burger with Swiss cheese melted over bacon and fried onions, served on Texas toast. When asked how to describe the burgers, Jeannie turned to a man at the bar who yelled, “They’re freakin’ awesome!” So, take it from Vern from Vestal, New York, who was eating a bacon burger, no onions.

Wyalusing Hotel—54 Main Street, Wyalusing (570) 746-1204

Every week there’s a new burger special. According to Adam Woodruff, head bartender and owner’s son, one special is a fan favorite: the Drunken Onion Burger—a half pound of Montrealseasoned chargrilled burger with gouda, bacon, house-pickled beer onions, lager-battered onion rings, topped with house made beer mustard and mayonnaise. The chef’s favorite special is the Steakhouse Burger, which is topped with a rosemary bacon bleu cheese, flash fried onions, sautéed mushrooms, and tarragon aioli. Their regular burger offerings show a lot of imagination, too. Consider the popular Monster Burger loaded with bacon, fried egg, crumbled bleu cheese, cheddar cheese, and ham. It’s served with a side of Dijon mustard. Try them all and then, come March, vote for your favorites during their Burger Bracket.

1882 on Desmond Bar & Grill—128 Desmond Street, Sayre (570) 882-9162

Gregg Henderson, the owner-and-sometimes-chef, says, “What makes our burgers special is the way we make them. They are a half pound of fresh, never frozen, beef. It gets mixed with a blend of five seasonings and hand formed one by one. They are cooked to order on a chargrill for that unmistakable flavor.” The restaurant’s only been around since 2020 but has quickly made a name for their burgers. The most popular is the 1882 Burger, which comes with American cheese, lettuce, onion, pickle, and a spicy version of Thousand Island dressing. But the chef’s favorite is the Boss Burger (probably named by the boss-and-sometimes-chef), which is topped with cheddar cheese, pulled pork, and onion rings. They are open seven days a week. Don’t miss Thursday Burger Night, featuring two dollars off the menu price of any burger—even the black bean veggie burger.
