DREAM TEAM With sharp writing and an enchanting pair of actors, TheatreWorks’ ‘Daddy Long Legs,’ now playing at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, has legs indeed

T

heatreWorks’ emphasis on new stage work is a real boon for our community, putting us on the map nationally as a destination for artists looking to create the next great American play or musical, and bringing together theater artists in a supportive, creative environment. Occasionally the combination is just right. Writers, composers and production teams unite to show what’s really possible with the magic of theater. Such is the stuff that “Daddy Long Legs” is made of. This new musical weaves its magic right into our hearts and minds, and is definitely one of the best surprises of the theater season so far. The lineage here has all the right stuff. Composer Paul Gordon, best known to TheatreWorks audiences for the recent hit “Emma,” wrote the music and lyrics. John Caird, who co-directed and

adapted “Les Miserables,” among many noteworthy award-winning shows, wrote the adaptation, and also directed this world premiere production. It was Caird’s wife who recommended Jean Webster’s 1912 novel “Daddy Long Legs” as the next project for the duo. The story chronicles the coming of age of orphan Jerusha Abbott (played by Megan McGinnis), who, after showing some early promise with her writing, is mysteriously financed for a full ride to college. Her benefactor chooses to remain anonymous and silent, but Jerusha can never be silent, writing lengthy, colorful letters each month to her “Daddy Long Legs,” as she nicknames him. As she blossoms from a girl into an educated and accomplished young woman, she writes and See DADDY, page 22

writes, and her relationship with “Daddy� grows, even though it’s a one-sided conversation. Or is it? The conceit of the novel, in which we hear only from Jerusha through her letters, is altered in the musical to allow us to see and hear her benefactor and would-be suitor, Jervis Pendleton (Robert Adelman Hancock). Jerusha of course doesn’t know that the attractive young man and her “Daddy� are one and the same, but we do, and that’s part of the fun and the intrigue, seeing the relationship unfold by fits and starts, and wondering how it will turn out. If you’ve read the book, of course, you know. The novel itself is witty, bright, philosophical by turns, and filled with sharp observations on life and society, especially on matters of disparate wealth and its effect on people. Caird has done a great job of keeping these delightful details alive, as well as illuminating the warm heart at the story’s core. Gordon’s lyrics also capture the bouncy and erudite language of budding author Jerusha in humorous rhyme. The two have shaped the engaging monologue of the novel into a wonderful dialogue between two appealing characters. What brings the project to life, however, are the remarkable performances given by McGinnis and Hancock, the only performers on stage.

The entire show rests on their shoulders, and they are both stunning in their roles, delivering the goods with ease and aplomb and enchanting modesty. McGinnis has the voice of an angel, one that issues from her with apparent effortlessness. She’s perfectly suited for this role: winsome, cute, feisty, intelligent and proud, as needed, as if she were born Jerusha. Her expressiveness, both in visage and in song, speaks volumes. She transitions from young girl to young woman quite naturally. And she amazed me with her ability to do absolutely anything while continuing to sing. Hancock has the task of creating a character almost from whole cloth, since there is little in the book on which to base Pendleton. But Caird’s and Gordon’s work gives him

an ample platform, and he takes it the rest of the way, making Pendleton a character utterly believable and equal in strength to Jerusha. His voice pleases in his solos, and rouses the house in “Charity,� but also blends flawlessly in duets with McGinnis. While the entire production team deserves kudos for the show as a whole, the set and costumes by David Farley earn special notice. The set provides an almost infinite variety of choices for configurations, allowing for visualizing of different spaces on a single set, while the costumes capture the period and occasion without distracting and without taking actors off the set. In short, TheatreWorks hits it out of the park with this production — it’s sweet, funny, touching, entrancing and superbly done. V

hen the big red splat hits your eye, that’s Howie’s Artisan Pizza. Otherwise, it’s hard to tell from its neighbors, all those all-glass fronts and low-hanging roofs on the El Camino end of Town & Country Village in Palo Alto. Even when you get closer, make sure you’ve found the door, not the wall. One chilly night, the front door was sticking in the open position. Owner Howard Bulka kept coming out from the kitchen to close it. Bulka did not have door duty in his previous job. He was executive chef at Marche in Menlo

Park since it opened in 2001, having apprenticed with French master chefs Paul Bocuse and Alain Chapel. General manager and wine buyer Lisa Robins also comes from Marche. And now for something completely different in Palo Alto: a very satisfying three-course dinner for two, including a bottle of wine, under $60. And pizza left over for breakfast. Howie’s Artisan Pizza employs a brick-lined, gas-fired oven, visible at the end of a long bar leading into the kitchen. The bar is a great place to nurse a slice of See HOWIES page 24

Recipe from Harry’s Bar in Venice

Harry’s Bar opened in 1931 when Giuseppe Cipriani, an enterprising bartender at the Hotel Europa in Venice, got some ďŹ nancial assistance from a rich, young American from Boston named Harry Pickering. According to Cipriani company history, Pickering had been a customer at the Hotel Europa for some time, suddenly stopped frequenting the hotel bar. Cipriani saw Pickering one day and asked why he no longer patronized the bar. Pickering was broke, he explained to the bartender -- his family cut him off when it was discovered he had not curtailed his recklessness and fondness for drinking. So, Cipriani loaned his patron a chunk of cash -- about 10,000 lire, or $5,000 U.S.. Two years later, Pickering walked back into the Hotel Europa, ordered a drink at the bar, handed 10,000 lire to Giuseppe Cipriani – he then handed Cipriani more. “Mr. Cipriani, thank you. Here’s the money. And to show you my appreciation, here’s 40,000 more, enough to open a bar. We will call it Harry’s Bar,â€? Located on Calle Vallaresso, close to the Piazza San Marco, the bar -- as the Cipriani’s have always called it -- was ďŹ rst conceived as a hotel bar, serving no food, and later transformed into a restaurant. To cook: Bring a large pot of water to boil before preparing the sauce. If using dry pasta salt boiling water and add pasta. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic, let it cook until golden, about 30 seconds, and discard it. Add the zucchini and cook for two minutes. Add the shrimp, the pepper  akes, and some salt, the wine and cook for three minutes, tossing constantly, until the shrimp are bright pink and ďŹ rm to the touch. Reserve 1/4 cup of the mixture for garnish. Set aside. If using fresh pasta, salt the boiling water, add the pasta, and cook until “al denteâ€? (about 2-3 minutes). Drain well in a colander. Toss the pasta with the zucchini-and-shrimp mixture, add the butter and the Parmesan, and toss well. Transfer to a heated serving platter dish and garnish with the reserved shrimp-and-zucchini mixture. Pass around a small bowl of grated Parmigiano cheese. JANUARY 29, 2010 â– MOUNTAIN VIEW VOICE â–

pizza and a glass of wine. There are 18 well-selected wines by the glass, from $4 to $9.50. The 42-seat dining room gets partial privacy with sliding dividers. On the down side, the child next to us found the sliders irresistible, adding to the odd acoustics. Even with a carpeted floor, Howie’s gets noisy. Open since Nov. 17, it’s already become a place for Palo Alto families to run into each other. Non-pizza eaters could easily make a meal of appetizers.

Eight prawns ($9) were perfectly cooked, bathed in rich tomatogarlic sauce and served with crunchy garlic bread. Eggplant pillows ($7) are excellent but cold. Just so you know. Thin-sliced pillowcases of eggplant have been cooked sometime earlier, rolled around light but creamy housemade ricotta, served in a pool of olive oil blended with parsley, capers, chili flakes and shallots. One beautifully dressed Caesar salad ($8) is easily enough for two. Crisp hearts of romaine are roughcut and tossed with garlic croutons and loads of Parmesan. grette. For an entree salad, add herb-roasted chicken breast ($3). The variety and depth of dressings and sauces are unusual for a pizza place, but Artisan is Howie’s middle name. All pizzas are 14 inches in diameter. The options are eight combinations, do-it-yourself, or half this and half that. One side with tomato sauce, the other without, no problem, no extra charge. We ordered half-bianco, halffennel sausage, drawing on the four basic food groups. Bianco is a symphony of five cheeses, spiked with green onion and hot chili. Howie’s mild house-made fennel sausage goes well with broccoli raab. Also known as rapini and rabe, this underappreciated vegetable has a slightly bitter, nutty flavor. As cookbook author Mark Bittman wrote last year in the New York Times, “Broccoli rabe can take whatever you throw at it and still shine.� The half-and-half pizza could have taken one minute longer in the oven, but the crust held up to all of its smoky, creamy, toothy toppings. It’s a mediumthin crust with puffy edges. Next time, we got takeout, and the crust was nicely charred. That’s the deal with artisan food. It’s a little different each time. This one was a basic cheese and tomato pie ($13) with pancetta ($2), cubed and superbly crispy. Takeout is tricky. You don’t want pizza or hot sandwiches to wait too long. By the time we got the grinder sandwich ($8) home, its toasted torpedo roll had drowned in oil and vinegar. Howie’s commendably reasonable wines recently featured Perfecta Sauvignon blanc at $12 a bottle. We often don’t think of white wine with pizza, and we should. This one has a mineral tone that tastes good even with garlic. Service was very attentive, up to the point when we’d finished our dinner and wanted to order dessert. Wave. No notice. Wave. And so on. Dessert is definitely worth waiting for, but not this long. In palate-cleansing vanilla and peppermint, a Matterhorn of soft-serve ice cream ($4) can be topped with house-made butterscotch, superb hot fudge or candied orange/toasted almond ($1). The ice cream at Howie’s Artisan comes from the local, organic Straus Family Creamery. Naturally.

(Aquarius) Little actually happens in “A Single Man,� Tom Ford’s debut film about a gay British expatriate living in Santa Monica in 1962. And yet everything happens in one day in the life of George Falconer (Colin Firth): grief, love, remembrance, work, fear ... Jim (Matthew Goode), George’s longtime lover, has been killed in an accident, and George sees little reason to continue living. But he goes through the motions, teaching at the college where he works, visiting his best friend, Charley (Julianne Moore), letting himself be pursued by a student who wants to confide in him, and perhaps more. Ford’s script, from a novel by Christopher Isherwood, captures not only the pain, both hidden and overt, of one gay man, but also some of the repressive spirit of the time just before the sexual revolution changed everything. (Century 16, Century 20) This hell-onearth movie stars Denzel Washington as a man with a mission beyond mere survival. Thirty winters have passed since the flash, a vaguely described cataclysmic event of global proportion. Either the sun or the war blinded many survivors. One of the few who remembers the world as we know it, Eli (Washington) says that people had more than they needed and no idea of what was important. He’s heading west with precious cargo: a leather-bound tome, coveted by a power-hungry book lover (Gary Oldman). If Washington or the filmmakers had hit a single false note, the action scenes might have been laughable. Instead they offer riveting reprieves from Eli’s achingly slow road trip, turned up a notch when joined by a runaway (Mila Kunis).Rated: R for some brutal violence and language. 1 hours, 58 minutes. — S.T.

(CineArts, Century 20) There’s one reason “Crazy Heart� is a must-see: Jeff Bridges. Bridges plays Bad Blake, a faded country-western music star relegated to playing dives. He treats his chronic weariness with drinking, defensive pleasantries and one-night stands. It’s hard to face up to the disappointments that have brought him here, and it’s easier to blame someone else — his manager, perhaps, or his one-time friend and colleague Billy Sweet (Colin Farrell), currently living the music-star life that has slipped from Bad’s fingers. Traveling America in his beat-up ‘78 Chevy truck, Bad would rather be left alone to anesthetize himself before, during and after gigs, but he agrees to an interview with a hopeful music journalist named Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Bad seduces her and realizes that, for the first time in a long time, he’s not interested in leaving his conquest behind. Rated R for language and brief sexuality. One hour, 51 minutes. — P.C.

(Century 16, Century 20) With its PG rating, Tom Vaughn’s film is a rarity in Hollywood: a movie with a mid-range budget that’s acceptable for precocious kids and doesn’t feature talking animals or 3-D CGI. The film tells the story of the Crowleys, a family reeling from the impact of Pompe disease. This form of muscular dystrophy afflicts young Megan and Patrick, causing their father (Brendan Fraser) to throw himself into the world of biotech. His path leads to Dr. Robert Stonehill (Harrison Ford), a cranky scientific researcher languishing, underfunded, at the University of Nebraska. Um, spoiler alert, but the two men bring out the best in each other. But let’s be honest: Some filmgoers like it sappy. One hour, 45 minutes. — P.C

SHERLOCK HOLMES ---1/2

(Century 16, Century 20) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary sleuth gets a cinematic adrenaline shot for this wildly entertaining and action-packed mystery. Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) is the private investigator du jour in turn-of-the-century England. The eccentric but brilliant Holmes works alongside his colleague Dr. John Watson (Jude Law) to solve unsolvable crimes. Convicted killer Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) seems to have cheated death through the use of dark magic, and his unexplainable powers have forced the populace into a frenzied panic. Blackwood isn’t Holmes’ only concern. Holmes’ old flame and former adversary Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams) resurfaces with a request to find a missing man. As Holmes desperately tries to stave off his feelings for Adler, he begins to realize the two cases are linked. Furthermore, Watson’s forthcoming nuptials may spell the end of his partnership with Holmes. And a mysterious professor lurks in the shadows. Rated PG-13 for violence and action, startling images and a scene of suggestive material. 2 hours, 14 minutes. T.H.

‘Lovely Bones’ hurt by unlovely narration By Peter Canavese

H

obbits and wizards and orcs, no problem. But when Oscar-winning “The Lord of the Rings� director Peter Jackson turned his attention to the story of a 14-year-old girl, he lost his way. Alice Sebold’s bestseller “The Lovely Bones� held good potential for a screen treatment, but Jackson squanders it on a schizoid film that largely misses the point of the novel. To be fair, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Jackson first earned respect with 1994’s “Heavenly Creatures,� a truecrime story about teen girls that incorporated fantasy elements, brought to life with tasteful special effects. Jackson clearly intended for lightning to strike twice with “The Lovely Bones,� which takes place partly in the afterlife of Susie Salmon, teen victim of a rape-murder (wisely kept off-screen). Sebold’s story — adapted by Jackson and regular collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens — finds Susie exploring her “In-Between� purgatory while failing to let go of Earth, where her family mourns and her killer roams free. Sadly, the filmmakers fail to strike a proper balance of the two parallel storylines and the novel’s many characters. It’s a mark of Jackson’s lack of restraint as a filmmaker that the mystery-thriller elements and fantastic visualiza-

tions overtake the domestic drama that is the novel’s true raison d’etre. Stanley Tucci (so warm and loving in “Julie & Julia�) adopts a Brando-esque cottonmouth and a creepy laugh to play Susie’s killer. Certainly, Jackson excels at the scenes of Hitchcockian suspense (put into further relief by a directorial cameo); in particular, he stages a memorable set piece involving Susie’s sister Lindsey (Rose McIver) risking discovery when she breaks into the killer’s home. Jackson also deserves some credit for a number of creative visualizations, such as the extended sequences depicting Susie’s psychological confusion and trauma as she first passes into the afterlife. But Jackson doesn’t know when to let well enough alone. While Susie’s self-styled “In-Between� sometimes cleverly evokes the

tacky art of the ‘70s (something you’d pick up for a quarter at a flea market), these sequences begin to feel like overlong luxury car ads scored by Enya (the actual culprit being prog rocker Brian Eno). Meanwhile, Jackson fails to engage us in the hurt of the Salmons, to whom at least half of the story should belong. Sebold’s novel patiently examined the short- and long-term effects of trauma on the family, a la Elizabeth Kubler-Ross’ “stages of grief� model. Jackson contains himself mostly to the obsession of Susie’s father Jack (a miscast Mark Wahlberg), who believes he can and must solve his daughter’s murder. Short shrift is given to Lindsey — whose love life poignantly echoes Susie’s missed opportunities — and her mother, Abigail (Rachel Weisz), rendered inconsequential and incoherent

by the excision of an adultery plotline. The problem is right there in the title. While the film dutifully repeats Susie’s explanation of “the lovely bones that had grown around my absence: the connections — sometimes tenuous, sometimes made at great cost, but often magnificent,� Jackson neglects to dramatize this connective tissue — of family ties, new loves and tentative friendships — that should hold the story’s heart in place.
