Numbers DEMOGRAPHICS AND MORE

Zeroes and ones may have propelled Mountain View to its current renown as a bustling tech hub, but other numbers tell the story of the city’s evolution into a diverse, economically vital suburb.

From its official birth in 1902 — a full 50 years after a settlement first formed

around a stagecoach stop on El Camino Real at Stevens Creek — the city has spread out to occupy 12.2 square miles.

Today, it is the home to companies of all sizes and to residents of all ethnic heritages. In the past 25 years, the city’s Asian population has nearly doubled, and its Hispanic community has grown as well, weaving new cultural threads into the fabric of the community. Almost half
