WELCOME TO INFO MOUNTAIN VIEW
outdoors & recreation | 12
At its heart, though, Mountain View is a community of residents, and Info Mountain View aims to help residents get the most out of life by capturing the most useful information, from how to contact the mayor to where to go dancing. Brand new in this year’s edition are maps, charts and graphics that give quick access to essential data. Our Education section offers comparative information on public and private schools. The Outdoors chapter maps out where you can fish, skate and gaze at stars. The Government chapter provides information on your City Council and the many boards and commissions that keep Mountain View running.
And if you’ve got suggestions for next year’s Info Mountain View, please email editor@mv-voice.com. We appreciate your feedback.

Numbers DEMOGRAPHICS AND MORE
Zeroes and ones may have propelled Mountain View to its current renown as a bustling tech hub, but other numbers tell the story of the city’s evolution into a diverse, economically vital suburb. From its official birth in 1902 — a full 50 years after a settlement first formed
around a stagecoach stop on El Camino Real at Stevens Creek — the city has spread out to occupy 12.2 square miles. Today, it is the home to companies of all sizes and to residents of all ethnic heritages. In the past 25 years, the city’s Asian population has nearly doubled, and its Hispanic community has grown as well, weaving new cultural threads into the fabric of the community. Almost half

of the population speaks a language other than English at home, according to the U.S. Census. Once the home to scrappy pioneers, now Mountain View runs a city government with a general operating budget of nearly $102 million. World-class theater. The hottest touring bands.
Classical music concerts and intimate evenings of jazz. When it comes to arts and entertainment, the Mountain View area has more than meets the eye. Mountain View’s nightlife centers around Castro Street, where people channel their
inner John Travolta at nightclubs and pubs, catch an up-and-coming musician at a cafe and see award-winning musicals. When quieter pursuits are called for, residents contemplate life through visual art at numerous local galleries, go to an author talk or learn about history at museum. If you want to see all of your options,

Home to Google, LinkedIn and the NASA Ames Research Center, the city of Mountain View might be considered the cradle of Silicon Valley. The modern semiconductor industry was born here, and the spirit of innovation remains. Today, Mountain View is a job hub for the
greater Bay Area, drawing in thousands of workers every day to design the gadgets of tomorrow. The local tech industry has brought prosperity but also a new set of problems for the city of 77,000. The city boasts 38 parks and more than 775 acres of open space, including the music hotspot of Shoreline Amphitheatre. Traffic has become

a major woe, particularly along highways 101 and 85. Meanwhile, rising housing costs have made Mountain View one of the most costly cities in northern California.
Juan Diaz is the chief of the Mountain View Fire Department, which boasts five stations.
Balancing public services around techsector development is the major challenge for Mountain View civic leaders as the city looks to the future.
