create their own Lego civilizations. During the camps, which range from one to two weeks, children serve as co-mayors of their Lego towns. In this role, they manage residents, policies, an economy and a budget. They also create infrastructure, establish justice systems and are given unexpected problems to respond to and solve. “We let them be the decision-makers and let them experience the consequences of their own decisions,” said Prerana Vaidya, Kidzz CEO. “Children deal with real-life issues like no running water or citizens protesting.” The camps also draw on real-world examples. Recently, when two children wanted to merge their towns into one, they modeled their merger after Palo Alto’s annexation of the adjacent city of Mayfield in 1925. “It’s a very unique program. In some ways I think it should be in schools because it’s important for people to take part in government — to understand why it’s important and why it takes care of people, especially in this day and age,” said parent Bronwyn O’Malley, whose son has participated in various Kidizens Build and govern programs, including two after-school your own city sessions and a summer camp during Kidizens Lego Camp, operated by which he had the opportunity to learn Kidzz Inc., encourages children to be- about city planning and leadership. come responsible citizens and future (continued on page 8) leaders by allowing them to plan and chools in Palo Alto and along the Midpeninsula area are generally recognized for their high academic rankings and test scores. And while students spend a good amount of time during the academic year honing their math, writing and test-taking skills to maintain these standards, what about those basic — but crucial — everyday living skills that everyone needs once they’re on their own? Will they know how to balance a budget? Cook nutritious meals? Or be able to get around without a car? Parents need not worry. The Midpeninsula also is a place that offers plenty of life-skills classes for children of all ages. As summer approaches, various youth organizations have opened registration for summer camp sessions that teach kids everything from basic cooking skills and finances to how to use public transportation. Here’s a look at a few of the local camps offering life-skills training.

“On one hand, kids are empowered to be architects of their own experience, and on the other hand, they’re quite vulnerable and can have fun with a creative opportunity,” Vaidya said. The Kidizens Summer Camp has been awarded a “Best of” badge three years in a row by ActivityHero, a website where users can shop for camps, afterschool classes, workshops and kids’ nights out.
and clean up after the fact,” said Kristiane Turner, school-age coordinator for PACCC. “The very first week they’re learning some of the basic safety skills: cutting, chopping, mixing skills — that sort of thing,” Turner said. “They’ll start with appetizers and starters one week, then move on to soups and salads the next week, then they’ll move on to main dishes, and of course the last week they end with dessert.”
Organize camp outings, activities Create menus, cook like a pro Palo Alto Community Child Care (PACCC) offers summer life-skills sessions, such as Operation Chef, which teaches basic cooking skills and food safety and provides students the experience of serving their own restaurant-style dinner to their families at the end of four weeks. “The children do everything from reservations, to seating, to collecting menus. Then they serve the families
For those who prefer being outside, Avid4 Adventure focuses on basic survival and first-aid skills and the general outdoor experience. Sessions are available for children entering pre-K through seventh grade. Depending on the camp, kids may learn to cook outdoors, navigate the wilderness, track animals, make tools, identify plants and stay safe around fire. Or they may mountain bike, paddleboard and climb rocks. “We take the kids to all these various recreation areas, like state and county
PACCC also offers Leaders in Training (L.I.T.) camp, in which participants plan out their own team-building activities, games and excursions within the city using public transportation, Turner said. “(Parents) were really looking for something that would attract their older kids,” she said. “It’s a pretty unique program where the kids actually plan what they’re going to do all week long.”

parks, or open space preserves, and we get them excited about being there,” said Katrina Ricca, Avid’s South Bay and Peninsula regional manager. Ricca said she grew up spending a lot of time with her family outdoors — an activity that she still enjoys. “We really want to empower kids to get outdoors,” Ricca said. “We also have to find a place where there’s families and a community that really value that idea of getting kids outside and letting them explore. Palo Alto is a great community for that.” Q Editorial interns Marley Arechiga and Sarah Klearman can be reached at marechiga@paweekly.com and sklearman@paweekly.com.

In the Games Camp players are grouped by age and ability and teams are formed. Teams play against one another in a coach pitched game where the goal is to see the ball “put into play.” Emphasis is placed on catching and exchanging the baseball cleanly, and knowing what to do with the baseball, given the score, the outs, and where the baserunners are located. Many of the skills learned in the Baseball School will be put into game situations. Each team will play together and coached by the coach all week. 50% of each afternoon session is devoted to games and the other 50% to hitting in the batting cages and developing further defensive baseball skills. Games will be played on Sunken Diamond. Q Camps
held at Stanford Varsity Baseball Field (Sunken Diamond). Q Coach to camper ratio is 1 coach for every 9 campers. Q Campers can attend multiple sessions.
