Welcome The Midpeninsula offers something for everyone

W

hether you are visiting for business or pleasure, or to attend a conference or other event at Stanford University, you will quickly discover the unusual blend of intellect, innovation, culture and natural beauty that makes up Palo Alto and the rest of the Midpeninsula. Palo Alto is home to Nobel Prize winners, Silicon Valley CEOs, venture capital firms, Hewlett-Packard and one of the most renowned universities and medical centers in the world. Though Palo Alto developed as a sleepy college town, the emergence of Stanford University in the 1970s as the nation’s leading high-technology research center paved the way for hundreds of startup businesses with connections to Stanford professors and their inventions. Thus, Palo Alto became known as the birthplace of Silicon Valley and attracted engineers and others from all over the world to pursue their dreams.

The Stanford campus itself is the biggest visitor attraction, and visitors could easily spend a day or longer exploring the beautiful campus.

Gardens at Filoli estate

But at a minimum any visit should also include a walk or drive through the tree-lined residential neighborhoods (among the costliest in the nation), a walk in the foothills or Baylands and some great shopping and eating in the handful of nearby business districts, including ones in Menlo Park and Mountain View.

BUILDINGS THAT MOVED - THE HOSTESS HOUSE I t’s not just that the people of the American West are restless, the buildings themselves sometimes pack up and move when - for one reason or another - the neighborhood no longer suits them or the neighbors no longer want them or opportunity waits down the road.

California Historical Landmark National Register #76000528 Menlo Park, 1918

Hostess Hou se Built 1918

27 University Avenue, Palo Alto

The Hostess House was designed by architect Julia Morgan in the Craftsman architectural style. It is the only intact building remaining from the two Army training camps (Camp Fremont and Camp Kearny) established in California during World War I. The Hostess House was originally located in Camp Fremont, a thousand-acre mobilization camp built in Menlo Park after the United States entered WWI in 1917. Hostess Houses were built by the

YWCA in forty continental Army training camps to serve as meeting places for women and children coming to military posts to visit friends, husbands, and relatives enlisted in the service. With the end of WW I, Camp Fremont was dismantled except for two buildings: the Oasis Bar & Grill and the Hostess House. Palo Alto purchased the Hostess House and relocated it to University Avenue in 1919, ZKHUH LW EHFDPH WKH QDWLRQ·V ÀUVW PXQLFLpally funded Community Center.

Fry’s Electronics: 340 Portage Ave., Palo Alto | This western-themed site is the oldest operating store in the company’s chain, which was founded as an electronics retail outlet in 1985 to provide a one-stop-shopping environment for Silicon Valley’s high-tech workers. Buck’s of Woodside: 3062 Woodside Road, Woodside | This iconic restaurant has gained fame as “the” meeting place for venture capitalists and tech entrepreneurs. (Reportedly, Steve Jobs is one of the few Silicon Valley icons who never set foot the restaurant due to a falling out with the owner in the 1980s prior to its opening.) Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory: 391 San Antonio Road, Mountain View | William Shockley’s laboratory was the first high-tech company to work on silicon-based semiconductor devices, which led to the development of Silicon Valley in 1956. The original building is no longer there, but sculptures of packaged semiconductors, including a transistor and a diode, are on display at the site to commemorate Shockley’s contributions to the tech world. Fairchild Semiconductor: 844 E. Charleston Road, Palo Alto | This commercial building is where the group of defectors from William Shockley’s Semiconductor Laboratory known as the “Traitorous Eight” (led by Intel co-founder Robert Noyce) invented the microchip in 1957. The building is now home to an interior design studio but the building and the California State Landmark plaque outside the entrance are visible from the sidewalk.

in the 1950s. San Antonio Shopping Center, located on the southernmost portion of the property, is a traditional retail center with big-box stores. The Village at San Antonio Center, which runs along San Antonio Road, underwent major renovations over the past few years that have transformed the corner into a modern, mixed-use center with luxury apartments, office space, parks, plazas and about 30 boutiques and restaurants. Castro Street With dozens of dining choices and a mix of music venues, performance spaces, coffee shops, pubs and bookstores, the Castro Street area that runs eight blocks from El Camino Real to West Evelyn Avenue through downtown is a popular entertainment destination. Visitors can find everything from Thai-style rolled ice cream to a museum dedicated to locks.

PALO ALTO Stanford Shopping Center: With more then 140 luxury stores and specialty boutiques, a mix of restaurants and cafes, sculpted gardens, cultural events and a Europeanstyle street market with locally grown produce, this 1.4-million-square-foot open-air center attracts visitors year round from near and far. The center recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation that transformed its west end into a “lifestyle center” with gardens, grassy sitting areas, an outdoor fireplace and space for more than 25 new shops. Downtown Palo Alto: Centered along University Avenue, this pedestrian-friendly district packs in two movie theaters — including one with a working Wurlitzer organ — multiple galleries, a bookstore, an eclectic mix of retail stores, restaurants and bars along a 10-block area that stretches between Alma and Tasso streets. This district is crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, when restaurant reservations are advised and parking can be difficult. Many downtown retailers are open in the evenings to cater to the bar and restaurant crowd. California Avenue: Just south of the Stanford campus, this five-block district between El Camino Real and Park Boulevard is quieter than downtown and features boutiques and a large number of restaurants popular with local residents. Town & Country Village: Located on El Camino Real across from Stanford Stadium, it’s hard to miss the distinctive red-tiled rooftops and rustic wood storefronts at this outdoor shopping center, which features more than 70 specialty shops, restaurants and services surrounding a network of pedestrian walkways.

MOUNTAIN VIEW San Antonio center: The corner of El Camino Real and San Antonio Road is home to two distinct shopping areas that were once part of a 56-acre outdoor mall built

Downtown Los Altos: Don’t expect to find big-box retail stores in Los Altos’ six-block downtown triangle. This tree-lined district, known for its quaint small-town feel, features a mix of locally owned boutiques, restaurants, salons and other services. Downtown Menlo Park With numerous outdoor street cafes that stay open for late-night dining, Santa Cruz Avenue is a lively destination. The district includes a mix of boutiques, galleries and shops for everyday needs.

Recreation Trails, golf courses and tennis courts keep visitors busy SWING THE RACKET Palo Alto offers many public tennis courts. Those closest to hotels are the courts at Palo Alto High School (enter from 25 Churchill Ave.) and at Rinconada Park (located at 777 Embarcadero Road). Both are lit at night. There are many courts on the Stanford campus, but you are expected to have a university affiliation.

BIKE AROUND TOWN The area prides itself on accommodating and encouraging bike riding. The most popular rides use Alpine, Arastradero, Portola and Sand Hill roads to create loops of different lengths. Skilled riders wanting to cycle several hours or all day ride up to Skyline Boulevard and down to the coast and back. In Mountain View, try biking around Shoreline Lake, located in the Baylands just south of Palo Alto.

SPLASH THE DAY AWAY Baylands Golf Links. Photo by Veronica Weber.

WALK, RUN AND EXPLORE The Stanford “Dish” loop offers almost 4 miles of paved path that winds through the Stanford foothills with tremendous views of the university, Palo Alto and entire Peninsula. The Baylands Nature Preserve offers miles of flat walking trails that allow visitors to explore the area’s extensive wildlife habitat.

Both Palo Alto and Menlo Park offer lap swimming through their municipal pools — Rinconada Pool (cityofpaloalto.org/ aquatics) and Burgess Memorial Pool (menloswim.com). But if you’re up for stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing or renting pedalboats, rowboats, canoes or kayaks, Shoreline Lake (shorelinelake.com) is the place to go.

DRIVE TO THE COAST Palo Alto is located between the bay and foothills, and the Pacific Ocean and the beach are only a 45-minute drive away. If you want to mix together shopping, eating and beach walking, your best bet is to head for Half Moon Bay.

The Pearson-Arastradero Preserve, in the foothills beyond Stanford near 1530 Arastradero Road, has a network of easy trails ideal for one- to two-hour hikes and a small unstaffed visitor’s center with exhibits. Walkers with an interest in history and architecture will enjoy one of several historical walks around Palo Alto’s neighborhoods. Palo Alto Stanford Heritage (pastheritage.org) offers walking tours and digital brochures for self-guided ones.

GOLF Baylands Golf Links, located at 1875 Embarcadero Road, is a newly reconfigured municipal course that reopened in May 2018 following a $12-million-plus renovation that integrated 55 acres of native plants and adjacent wetlands into the 18-hole course. 650-8560881, baylandsgolflinks.com. Those with a Stanford connection (alumni or parents) can play at the Stanford Golf Course. It’s located at 198 Junipero Serra Blvd., Stanford. At this venue, visitors will find a beautiful and long course operated by the university. 650-724-0944 (golf shop), 650-498-4461 (driving range), golfcourse.stanford.edu. At Mountain View’s Shoreline Links, located at 2940 N. Shoreline Blvd., golfers can play on the 750-acre course that offers 18 holes and acres of water hazards. 650-9034653, shorelinelinks.com.

Safety & Transportation Medical services and transportation are available at all hours Palo Alto is an extremely safe community, and other than taking obvious precautions when out at night, visitors should feel comfortable freely exploring the city. Use common sense and extra care when using the pedestrian tunnels at the train stations, and avoid walking alone at night. Medical care is available either at the Urgent Care department at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (795 El Camino Real; adults, 650-321-4121/pediatric, 650-8536558; pamf.org) or the emergency room at Stanford Hospital (900 Quarry Road Extension; 650-723-5111; stanfordhealthcare.org). For after-hours prescriptions, Walgreens at 121 E. El Camino Real, Mountain View, is open 24/7. 650-961-7555. Palo Alto and Stanford are served by a transportation network that includes the regional Caltrain system (800-660-4287; for hearing impaired, 650-508-6448 (TTY); caltrain.com), which operates frequent trains between San Francisco and San Jose; the free Palo Alto Shuttle (650-329-2441; cityofpaloalto.org/shuttle); the free Stanford Marguerite shuttle bus service (650-7249339; marguerite.stanford.edu); the Santa Clara Valley

Transportation Authority bus system (408-321-2300, vta.org); and an extensive network of pedestrian and bike paths. Local taxis (Yellow Checker Cab Co., 408-7777777 or 650-999-9999) and rides through services such as Lyft and Uber are also available. While most visitors drive, it is feasible to land at either San Francisco or San Jose airports, connect to nearby Caltrain stations in Millbrae and Santa Clara (via BART at SFO and VTA bus, Route 10, at SJC) and arrive at the downtown Palo Alto train station. From there, the Marguerite shuttle provides service to locations on the Stanford campus and select stops in Palo Alto. Private airport shuttles regularly operate from both airports. During weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., parking in downtown Palo Alto and California Avenue lots is free for two hours (and parking garages for three hours). There is no enforcement on weekends. Day permits for downtown and California Avenue are available for $25. It can be difficult to find parking in the evening, especially on Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit paloalto.parkingguide.com. For Stanford parking information, see page 15.

Wine Tasting Exploring the Peninsula’s vineyards and wineries

T

he Santa Cruz Mountains — which rise 3,786 feet above the San Francisco Bay at their highest point and stretch the entire length of the Peninsula — are home to hundreds of intimate artisan wineries and private vineyards. The region’s higher elevations, cooler temperatures and frequent fog provide the perfect micro-climate for growing pinot noir and Chardonnay grapes. If you have at least a few hours, it’s worth taking a scenic drive (tinyurl.com/ScenicWineDrive) along the winding mountain roads to visit some of these wineries and take in the panoramic view of Silicon Valley.

Farm-to-table Dining Experience seasonal dishes fresh from Peninsula farms

H

igh-tech may have replaced many of the orchards that once defined the Peninsula and the surrounding area, but there are still a number of family-owned ranches, specialty farms and experimental orchards around to provide lots of opportunities to experience farm-fresh apricots, nuts, avocados and other local specialties year round in the fields where they are grown or in restaurants focused on farm-to-table dining.

RESTAURANTS: SEASONAL MENUS AND FARM DINNERS MORSEY’S FARMHOUSE 134 Main St., Los Altos | 650-860-6060 | morseys.com Every dish at Morsey’s Farmhouse in Los Altos is made with products from Kal and Yulia Morsey’s 50-acre dairy just outside of Sacramento. The husbandand-wife team have built the entire restaurant menu around the milk produced from their herd of about 400 water buffalo. The restaurant is one of few in the United States anchored largely on water buffalo-based products. Diners can find everything from gelato, buffalo-milk quiche and buffalo cheesecake to salads and sandwiches made with the restaurant’s mozzarella, burrata and award-winning ricotta. PORTOLA KITCHEN 3130 Alpine Road, Portola Valley | 650-851-6453 | portolakitchen.com Almost everything on the rustic-Italian menu at Portola Kitchen is made from scratch using locally sourced ingredients, including fresh-picked produce delivered daily from the family-owned Webb and Jelich ranches, both located a short drive down the road. And although the restaurant is located in a strip mall, diners are likely to feel as if they are next to the orchards where their food was grown. The outdoor dining patio is just steps from Bianchini’s Market, which features a large selection of locally grown produce displayed in rows of outdoor bins across from the dining tables.

Artichokes, Menlo Park Farmers Market. Photo by John Kadvany.

FARMS: TOURS AND TASTINGS HARLEY FARMS 205 North St., Pescadero | 650-879-0480 | harleyfarms.com Visitors can dine by candlelight in the hayloft at Harley Farms surrounded by nine acres of pastures where ingredients in the meal are produced. The restored 1910 dairy farm, which is now home to 200 alpine goats, hosts tours followed by farm dinners on select Fridays and Saturdays year round, providing visitors the opportunity to see where and how the farm’s award-winning chevre, fromage blanc, ricotta and feta goat cheeses are made. Tours include a behind-the-scenes peek at the dairy’s cheese making, with stops at the edible flower garden, loafing barn and milking parlor. The four-course farm dinners are prepared from locally grown food by the farm cook. Farm dinners are open to diners ages 18 and older and sell out early.

VINA ENOTECA 700 Welch Road, Palo Alto | 650-646-3477 | vinaenoteca.com Housed in the rustic Stanford Barn that served as a working winery in the late 1800s, Vina Enoteca regularly draws on produce grown about a mile away at Stanford University’s O’Donohue Family Stanford Educational Farm for its Italian-California menu. Restaurant owner Rocco Scordella checks out what’s available on the farm before coming up with dishes at his restaurant. Scordella is in talks with Stanford to build a new 7-acre garden that would provide additional fresh ingredients for his restaurant.

O’DONOHUE FAMILY STANFORD EDUCATIONAL FARM 175 Electioneer Road, Stanford | farm.stanford.edu Stanford University’s six-acre academic farm is open year round for public tours, seasonal tastings and other special harvest events. Overseen by the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Science, the campus farm contains more than 200 varieties of vegetables, flowers, herbs, field crops and fruit and provides 15,000 pounds of produce a year for the university’s student-dining halls. Students come to the farm to test new ideas about the biological, social and environmental aspects of farming. Tours begin at the Huffington Barn every Tuesday at 12:15 p.m.

MADERA 2825 Sand Hill Road, Menlo Park | 650-561-1540 | maderasandhill.com Madera brings seasonal ingredients along with the farmers who grow them into its Michelin-star kitchen once a month for a five-course farm dinner. A farmer and the executive chef join guests at the communal dining table during each dinner to discuss the creation and ingredients of each dish. The dinner series also includes a flight of wine pairings customized by the sommelier team. Dinners are offered during one seating at 6:30 p.m., spring through fall.

WEBB RANCH 2720 Alpine Road, Portola Valley | webbranchinc.com Established in 1922, this six-acre, family-owned ranch provides organic and pesticide-free fruits and vegetables direct from the farm to grocery stores, farmers markets and select restaurants year round. Visitors can explore the ranch’s orchards and stables and pick their own boysenberries, blackberries and raspberries by the bucket from spring to fall. The ranch sells some seasonal produce on site and also is open for special Halloween and Christmas events.
