CHEERS TO AVL BEER WEEK
PARTNERING UP: Creating collaborations between breweries and other businesses is a speciality of AVL Beer Week. Photo by Jack Sorokin The sixth annual AVL Beer Week arrives at a time of tremendous growth for the local brewing industry. In the past few months alone, Asheville has welcomed leading yeast provider White Labs to town, seen Wicked Weed Brewing become the first home-grown brewery purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev and witnessed the emergence of a new brewery district in the greater Biltmore Village area on and around Sweeten Creek Road. For us beer journalists, it seems as if every other day brings word of a new brewery announcing plans to open or an existing one touting an expansion of some sort. Covering such an active scene is thrilling but also a challenge — and we can only imagine how difficult it is for readers to stay on top of each week’s new offerings. Fortunately, one of AVL Beer Week’s specialties is inspiring collaborations between local breweries and industry allies, and the mutually supportive efforts of these peers make it easier to experience multiple local assets in one sitting. Be it Hi-Wire Brewing toting its arsenal of sour beers to nextdoor neighbor Appalachian Vintner, Chestnut partnering with Highland Brewing Co. for a beer dinner or the ultimate convergence of Asheville breweries, Beer City Festival, there’s no shortage of exciting beer happenings. — Edwin Arnaudin, beer coverage coordinator 2

20 YEARS, 20 BEERS Green Man celebrates its 20th anniversary with a full slate of AVL Beer Week events Green Man Brewery is commemorating its 20th year in operation, and one day of celebration would not have sufficed. Instead, Asheville’s second-oldest brewery has scheduled a weeklong series of events featuring its most coveted beers, including a few that haven’t been seen since the brewery initiated the first sour program in town almost a decade ago. In addition to releasing cellared bottles of some of the brewery’s most highly acclaimed products, Green Man will also be introducing some noteworthy new offerings, including its first multivintage blended sour. “We’ve always been that brewery that you sort of discover,” says Green Man owner Dennis Thies. “We’ve historically never really put a lot of hype behind what we’re doing, but we’re really excited about this because it’s a cool milestone that we wanted to commemorate through all the beers we’ve been putting out. It’s exciting. Twenty years in this crazy universe that is the craft beer industry — to make it to 20 is extremely significant.” Although AVL Beer Week doesn’t officially begin until Friday, May 26, Green Man got a head start on the festivities by debuting this year’s La Mas Negra Imperial Black Ale and offering vertical tastings of its Dweller Imperial Stout and Demon Dweller Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout on May 22. And on Thursday, May 25, the 2017 batch of Holly King Barrel Aged Holiday Ale premieres along with the opportunity for on-premises consumption of several rare bottles that showcase the brewery’s sour program. Spearheaded by former Green Man specialty brewer and current owner and brewmaster of Zebulon Artisan Ales, Mike Karnowski, in late 2009 and early 2010, the program is one of the oldest of its kind in the Eastern U.S. Its history will be covered as part of an educational roundtable on Thursday, May 25, at 6 p.m. Open to the public, the event will be moderated by members of the Mountain Ale & Lager Tasters homebrew club and will include some extraordinarily rare offerings from the brewery’s cellar.
More than 11 cases of the 2016 editions of both Bootsy Sour Black Ale and Maceo Imperial Brown Ale have been aging for a year and will be available for bottle service that night. Attendees will also receive the first chance to try Wilder, which Green Man head of marketing Elizabeth Keil calls “one of the most complex beers we’ve ever made.” Named after actor Gene Wilder well before his death in August 2016, Wilder was the designation given to the base beer for the brewery’s Snozzberry American Sour Blonde Ale. Inspired by Belgian lambics, the multivintage blend of Wilder was conceived by former Green Man specialty brewer and current Archetype Brewing head brewer Josh Jiles, alongside current Green Man specialty brewer and lead cellarman Kyle McKenzie. While the beer is intended to be less acidic and more complex than the brewery’s current sour offerings, McKenzie is quick to point out that it shouldn’t be confused with gueuze. “I didn’t want to call it lambic or gueuze out of respect to those beers stylistically. There are some traditional things we’re not doing — we’re not turbid mashing or spontaneously fermenting. We don’t want to bastardize that style,” says McKenzie. “But Jiles and I had been wanting to put out base Wilder for a long time because, in tasting through barrels, we always seemed to find a few barrels that had a really nice character that was just going to get covered up when we threw fruit on it.” McKenzie tasted every barrel of Wilder in Green Man’s possession before settling on four, ranging in age from 9 months to almost 40. They were then blended and allowed to rest for two months before being packaged. Since the beer’s May 25 debut is solely for on-premises consumption, the first opportunity to take home Wilder in 750-milliliter bottles is Saturday, May 27, at 2 p.m. at the Greenmansion with a limit of two per customer. Next door, Dirty Jack’s will be open to serve customers who don’t want to brave the bottle release. Within the Greenmansion, all exits from the sale
CELEBRATIONS FOR DAYS: “We’ve always been that brewery that you sort of discover,” says Green Man owner Dennis Thies. “We’ve historically never really put a lot of hype behind what we’re doing, but we’re really excited about [our 20th anniversary] because it’s a cool milestone that we wanted to commemorate through all the beers we’ve been putting out.” Photo by Scott Douglas line will be final, so attendees wanting bottles are cautioned not to go upstairs to the taproom for a beer unless they have already purchased their packaged products downstairs. In addition to Wilder, Green Man will continue to pour beers from its 20th Anniversary Pub Series, creations that harken back to the early days of the brewery and will close out AVL Beer Week with the release of Old Hearty Ale, a collaboration with Bruisin’ Ales as part of the bottle shop’s 10th anniversary Golden Gloves 2017 Series. A tribute to the classic Old Ales of England, 750-milliliter bottles of the 13.4 percent ABV brew go on sale

at Bruisin’ Ales at 5 p.m. Friday, June 2, giving Green Man an impressive and potentially symbolic total for the week. “I’m not exactly sure how many beers we’re actually releasing, but including the vintage stuff, it’s got to be around 20 — 20 beers for 20 years,” says Thies. “I think, in a nutshell, Beer Week is a great time for us to celebrate having been at this for 20 years, and we want to share it with our fans in Asheville. Local support here has been so incredibly overwhelming. We couldn’t be happier to be able to share this occasion with our community.” X 2017 AVL BEER WEEK OFFICIAL GUIDE

DRAWING A CROWD Beer City Festival adds guest breweries, craft sodas by MALT homebrewers
BEER CENTRAL: The eighth annual Beer City Festival is set for Saturday, May 27, at Roger McGuire Green at Pack Square Park. Photo courtesy Asheville Ale Trail There are many ways to enjoy AVL Beer Week, but the biggest celebration is always the Beer City Festival showcase of Western North Carolina brews. The festival, now in its eighth year, goes from noon-5 p.m. Saturday, May 27, at Pack Square Park’s Roger McGuire Green in the heart of downtown. Dozens of beers will be available, most of them by members of the Asheville Brewers Alliance, the nonprofit organization that represents area breweries. The festival will include some out-ofmarket guest breweries, plus craft soft drinks made by the Mountain Ale and Lager Tasters homebrew club. Raleigh funk/soul band Strange Lady, Asheville funk rockers Travers Brothership and Nashville-based jazz fusion group Dynamo are booked for the afternoon. Attendance is limited to 2,500, says Kendra Penland, ABA executive director. “We typically sell out. It’s hard to say if there will be any tickets at the gate,” she says, recommending that potential attendees secure access in advance. The festival again benefits Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Western North Carolina. In 2016, the nonprofit received $9,000 in festival proceeds.

Penland says the festival location, just in front of Asheville City Hall and the Buncombe County Courthouse, is perfect for big gatherings. It’s the same space used by the popular summertime Shindig on the Green series and includes the Splashville fountain for cooling off. “It’s easy to get there,” she says. “Folks who are staying in the downtown hotels can just walk over.” There is also plenty of parking nearby, and the site will be gated to help control the festival. Several dozen breweries are taking part. Those that are confirmed are Asheville Brewing Co.; Appalachian Mountain Brewery of Boone; Bhramari Brewhouse; Bold Rock Hard Cider of Mills River; Boojum Brewing Co. of Waynesville; Burial Beer Co.; Catawba Brewing Co.; Currahee Brewing Co. of Franklin; Ginger’s Revenge; Green Man Brewery; Hi-Wire Brewing; Highland Brewing Co.; Hillman Beer; New Belgium Brewing Co.; Noble Hard Cider; One World Brewing; Oskar Blues Brewery of Brevard; Pisgah Brewing Co. of Black Mountain; Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. of Mills River; Thirsty Monk Brewery; Twin Leaf Brewery; Wedge Brewing Co.; and Whistle Hop Brewing Co. of Fairview. More breweries are being added to the lineup, Penland says.
The festival also has a strong lineup of guest breweries. Those are Bond Brothers Beer Co. of Cary (makers of such beers as Blonde Roast Strong Ale and Cary Gold Cream Ale); Brown Truck Brewery of High Point (known for using primarily locally sourced ingredients); Foothills Brewing of Winston-Salem (products include Pilot Mountain Pale and Torch Pilsner); Lo-Fi Brewing of Charleston, S.C. (owned by former Pisgah brewer Jason Caughman); and Yee Haw Brewing Co. of Johnson City, Tenn. (which makes a pilsner and Eighty Shilling Scottish ale). “This year, we are adding a couple of elements to the festival,” Penland says. “We will have a small-batch tent for some of the guest breweries and local breweries. They will switch out on the taps (through the afternoon).” Also, the AVL Beer Week collaboration brew, a Mellonball IPA that was brewed at Boojum, will be tapped at the festival. About 20 barrels of the collaboration beer have been canned and will be at sold at local breweries. Cans will not be available at the festival. All the ingredients for the beer were donated to the ABA, Penland says. The ABA will also have a tent and will sell memberships in the Asheville Beer Fan program. X

BE NICE WITH YOUR BEER: Attorney Derek Allen says that attendees at AVL Beer Week events can support breweries by playing by the rules. “Don’t put the servers and people doing their jobs in a bad position by rolling up without an ID or trying to take away two drinks,” he says. Photo by Jack Sorokin
Asheville’s reputation as a beer mecca has benefited the local economy and culture substantially, but the influx of beer tourism carries with it an inherent risk. The sheer quantity of drinking events during AVL Beer Week can lead to public safety hazards ranging from overconsumption to drunken driving, and nothing ruins a good time like a night spent in front of a magistrate or in the emergency room. That’s why Asheville’s law enforcement community works closely with local breweries, bars and restaurants to ensure that everyone can enjoy the city’s remarkable beer scene safely and responsibly. “Our beer industry is ultraresponsible, and breweries are quick to educate consumers — but people make bad choices everywhere, even if it’s a very small percentage of the population,” says Al Bottego, Asheville Alcoholic Beverage Control chief law enforcement officer. A 28-year veteran of local law enforcement, Bottego has watched Asheville grow from a quiet mountain town with limited nightlife to a nationally recognized destination for beer drinkers. Overall, Bottego has been impressed with the level of responsibility taken on by local breweries in training staff to monitor patrons and adhere to the ABC’s interpretation of state laws, as well as the degree of discretion displayed by craft beer drinkers. “I tend to look at [craft beer drinkers] as connoisseurs — their objective is typically to drink better, not more,” he says. North Carolina’s alcohol laws can be relatively byzantine, especially to visitors. In addition to obvious restrictions regarding overconsumption and underage drinking, laws regarding consumption of alcohol on permitted premises are particularly significant in our state. Alcoholic beverages cannot be purchased at one permitted premise and taken to another; a single customer cannot be served two drinks at once; and open containers are never acceptable outside a permitted premise.
2017 WNC’s fun way to give!
“If you violate these laws, you’re not only at risk of criminal prosecution, you’re also putting people’s permits on the line,” says Asheville-based attorney Derek Allen, who leads the Alcoholic Beverage Law practice at Ward and Smith. “If a brewery’s permit gets in trouble and they have to shut down for a few days or a week, that’s pretty financially devastating. Don’t put the servers and people doing their jobs in a bad position by rolling up without an ID or trying to take away two drinks. Help them help you have a good time.” Allen frequently partners with Bottego and Stacy Cox, N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement special agent in charge, to offer educational resources and staff training to area breweries, bars and restaurants, with public safety being the paramount priority for everyone involved. According to Bottego, large beer events such as the Beer City Festival can be of particular concern to law enforcement as the conjunction of crowds and alcohol can create an environment in which people may be more prone to act out. “People can be less cordial in crowds,” Bottego says. “So bring your patience and judgment — and stay aware of your surroundings.” Allen concurs: “Not just the ALE, but our local police authorities do a good job of knowing where fun ends and public safety issues begin.” The cooperative relationship among law enforcement, local businesses profiting from alcohol sales and the craft-beer consuming public is critical to the continued economic growth of Asheville’s beer industry, and Allen points out that ongoing collaboration is in the best interests of all involved. While community leaders such as he and Bottego go to great lengths to ensure that industry professionals and consumers are uniformly well-informed on the letter of the law, it’s up to the individual drinker to enjoy Asheville beer responsibly.
