When the very adorable Miss Butterworth, aka “Miss B,” came to the Asheville Humane Society, she quickly became an international internet sensation and doggy celebrity as the drama of her weight-loss program played out on social media. Miss B initially topped the scales at 20.2 pounds and was classified as morbidly obese by Asheville Humane Society’s medical staff.

ADMINISTRATION

DISTRIBUTION Cindy Kunst

After six months of hard work and determination, Miss Butterworth slimmed down to half her starting weight, becoming fit and trim as a result of her weight-loss journey. The cover shows Miss Butterworth, at 17.3 pounds, posing with Tammy Jones from Mix 96.5 at the radio station’s Dog Day Afternoon event last September.

The Give!Local Guide is published by Mountain Xpress

She has since been successfully adopted by a loving family, whose members keep everyone updated on Miss Butterworth’s doings via her Facebook page at avl.mx/5dh

Welcome to WNC’s 2018 Online Giving Campaign

How to participate

1 2

Learn about this year’s 40 participating nonprofits, who are all listed in this handy print guide, as well as on the Give!Local website at givelocalguide.org. Learn about their missions and how they are helping make this a better community.

Go to givelocalguide.org and set up your account.

4

Check out and pay with a credit card.

5

You’re done!

Every penny of your donation goes to the nonprofits you designate — Give!Local even covers the credit card fees!

3

Decide which nonprofits you want to give to

and how much, from $1 up to as much as you like. As you make your selections, Give!Local’s shopping cart will total what you’ve decided to give to each nonprofit. Before you check out, you will have an opportunity to go back and adjust your amounts if you wish.

If you donate $20 or more, Give!Local will mail you a voucher book about 10 days afterwards containing coupons for goods and services at area businesses. If you give $300 or more, an additional incentive packet will be mailed to you in January. And if you give $1,000 or more, we will hand-deliver a box of goodies to your home or business in January or February.

GIVE!LOCAL RULES • The minimum combined donation to receive an incentive is $20 — unless you are age 12 or under, in which case it is $5. • Donations of $20 or more made during Big Give events qualify you for Big Give drawings. Winners will be chosen by random drawings in the week following each event. • You can give more than once, but be sure to use the same username and email so we can combine the total of your gifts. • Incentives are limited in quantity. We will try our darnedest to make sure everyone gets an incentive, but incentives will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and no incentives are guaranteed. • Only one incentive package per email address, and two incentive packages per household. • Children can participate, too! The minimum to earn a Kids Incentive is just $5. Children must have parental approval. Multiple children from one home may give separately, but the incentives will come in one envelope addressed to the parent or guardian. • Your contact information will only be given to the nonprofits you donate to. If you do not wish to be contacted by them, there is an optout check box. Note that we need your address in order to deliver your incentive. • Give!Local is a web-based giving project, but if you prefer to fill out a paper form and write a check instead, there is a paper form at the back of this print guide.

With 50 volunteers offering 30 weekly classes, we are building equity and inclusivity among those we serve by making evidencebased wellness tools accessible to all.

We provide community education about dementia, caregiving and healthy aging and are committed to serving all those in need.

“Our community is fortunate to have a program like MemoryCare that helps families manage a difficult disease like Alzheimer’s. I have several family members who have or have had the disease and did not have access to help they needed. I support MemoryCare so families here have what they need.”

WHAT THEY DO: Our mission is “to break the cycle of poverty through education, one child at a time.” We envision a community where all children succeed. OpenDoors Intensive programs support up to 50 local K-12 and college students — through education, advocacy and enrichment. Additionally, we impact up to 375 students through our arts programming and public school classroom educator trainings. Our To and Through program prepares students growing up in multigenerational poverty to enter and graduate college with little to no student debt.

WHAT THEY DO: We take in donated “dusty but not rusty” bikes, parts, clothing and gear. We sell these to the public at an affordable rate to provide cycling to the general public as a mode of transportation and recreation. The proceeds allow us then to fulfill our mission of providing mountain-bike outings to youth who would not otherwise have that opportunity. Our ride program is called Adventure Kids WNC.

“I found out about OpenDoors, and it helped me a lot because I’m my kids’ only advocate. Or I thought I was until I met you guys. I was advocating for my kids in ways where I wasn’t being heard. I was going through the same pattern, over and over again. Now that my kids are getting what they need, they’re soaring in so many different ways: attitude, behavior, school. It’s awesome.” — Lisa Whittenburg, mother of three OpenDoors Intensive Students opendoorsasheville.org 828.239.8811

Appalachian Wildlife Refuge

Asheville Humane Society

WHAT THEY DO: Save wild lives! Appalachian Wildlife Refuge is a volunteer-driven nonprofit that coordinates wildlife rehabilitation efforts in Western North Carolina, providing care for injured and orphaned wildlife, support for the wildlife rehabilitation network and conservation education to the community. Your support helps injured and orphaned native wild animals in crisis receive care and treatment in the Appalachian Wild Urgent Care facility.

WHAT THEY DO: Asheville Humane Society is about hope, not heartache. As Buncombe County’s critical safety net since 1984, we are always here to shelter, save and protect every animal in need. We are now going even further, helping our community’s pets have the quality of life they deserve — a life worth living.

“The Appalachian Wild Urgent Care facility is a dream come true and is providing a critical resource to serve the injured and orphaned wild animals needing help in our region!” — Janice Burleson, home-based wildlife rehabilitator

“I love you guys so much — it’s the work you do in the community to keep families and pets together that’s the real unsung story of AHS. We’re going to keep supporting you for as long as we have breath in our bodies.” — Paul Maplesden, donor ashevillehumane.org 828.761.2001

Friends2Ferals WHAT THEY DO: Providing a longterm solution to feline overpopulation in Buncombe, Henderson and Madison counties through a consistent trap-neuterreturn program and low- or no-cost spay-neuter surgery at Humane Alliance. In the nine years since its founding, Friends2Ferals/HSBC has returned about 12,000 cats to responsible care with a rabies certificate designating the person responsible for renewing the shots. Friends2Ferals/HSBC provides an FVRCP vaccine and cats are treated for parasites and minor wounds. “Last November, a feral mother cat that we had been feeding deserted her three kittens. Since we had five rescues already, we couldn’t keep them. Hoping for a better option than the county animal shelter, I called Friends2Ferals. Nancy taught me how to trap the kittens and took them for spay-neuter surgery and vaccinations Then, through a foster program, all three kittens found a forever home. Since then we have been watching for the mother cat so I can trap her to prevent the reproduction process yet again.” — Mary Ickes avl.mx/33o 828.505.6737

ARTS AND LITERACY

Thank You! To sponsors, for making the project possible.

Center for Cultural Preservation

Literacy Council of Buncombe County

WHAT THEY DO: We are WNC’s history and documentary film center. Our mission is to preserve the living history of the Southern Appalachians through oral history, documentary film and public programs, and to connect our cultural history with ancestral notions of natural-inheritance protection. Our film projects help engender a stronger sense of community, sustainability and hope by connecting the dots between the lives our mountain elders lived and today’s more isolated world.

WHAT THEY DO: The Literacy Council of Buncombe County’s mission is to increase comprehensive literacy and English language skills through specialized instruction by trained tutors and through access to literacy resources. We serve students in four programs: Adult Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), the Augustine Project® and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library®. Improved literacy skills benefit not only the struggling reader, but everyone in our community, regardless of age, race, gender or background.

“This wonderful organization does so many things — performances of music and storytelling, creation of documentaries and preservation of cultural treasures that are in danger of being lost forever. I’ve been lucky enough to attend many of their events and recommend them highly.”

“Not only was I learning disabled, I was also born 65 percent deaf. If the Literacy Council was not available to me, I actually wouldn’t have been given the opportunity to read. I came in at a kindergarten reading level, and quickly moved to a fifth-grade reading level.”

We make a difference in the community by hosting original educational events, publishing the annual Green Building Directory, serving on the Energy Innovation Task Force, managing the Blue Horizons Project community campaign and implementing programs such as Green Built Homes and Appalachian Offsets. “Green Built Alliance addresses the urgent necessity for our built environment to better mimic nature’s systems. MountainTrue

RiverLink

WHAT THEY DO: MountainTrue is Western North Carolina’s premier advocate for environmental stewardship. We are committed to keeping our mountain region a beautiful place to live, work and play. Our members protect our forests, clean up our rivers, plan vibrant and livable communities, and advocate for a sound and sustainable future for all residents of WNC. MountainTrue was voted WNC’s No. 1 Environmental Organization by the readers of Mountain Xpress in both 2016 and 2017 and 2018.

WHAT THEY DO: We work to promote and protect the French Broad River and its watershed. We want people to experience the river, learn about the river and to conserve the river. We achieve this through offering inquiry-based education programs; by reclaiming impaired lands for public use, river access points and conservation easements; and by promoting water restoration and conservation. We empower over 1,700 volunteers annually and educate 3,000 K-12 students with hands-on environmental education lessons that cover aquatic habitats, water chemistry and the human impacts on our watersheds.

“I am a member of MountainTrue because I love the beauty of our mountains and believe that we have a responsibility to make sure that their unspoiled beauty is here for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren.” — Ron Roby, member mountaintrue.org 828.258.8737

The nonprofit’s main service area includes six counties in WNC, with offices in Asheville, Brevard, Hendersonville, Marshall and Rutherfordton. “The attorney that was working my case was prompt, professional, caring and kind, and if I didn’t understand something, she would break it down and explain everything to me. I never felt rushed, never felt like a charity case. They made me feel like I was important, and my case was also.” — Sherry pisgahlegal.org 828.253.0406
