You want trout, or maybe a locally brewed beer — or simply to do what the locals do. While some of what the locals do can be colorful, you don’t have to don tie-dye, find a djembe and hit the Pritchard Park drum circle to get a feel for the city. If you want the word on where to find a juicy burger with all the fixins’, you better believe we’ll steer you away from McDonald’s and toward a restaurant that uses locally sourced meat. If you want a beer, we’re going to gently remove that Budweiser from your hand, and replace it with a pint from one of the many breweries in Western North Carolina. Asheville has long been a mecca for people pursuing a healthy lifestyle. So, when the climbing group or the couple on a yoga retreat come searching for a wholesome, fulfilling experience, it’s a safe bet they’re wondering where to have something meat-free. Sometimes it seems like a good tempeh reuben is easier to find than a hearty piece of meat. Where’s a carnivore to turn? Want a creative burger with all of the bells and whistles? Burgermeister’s in West Asheville takes pride in putting far-out toppings on their burgers. Case in point: The Macho, with its pico de gallo, guacamole, cheddar and jalapeños. Highly recommended is the burger house’s crowning achievement, The Meister. Head to Tingles Cafe in downtown Asheville. The restaurant has been restored to reflect its historic character, with some updates. For example, even though the soda counter looks old-fashioned, the housemade sodas contain herbs, spices and flavorings with a modern twist. Try the locally harvested wildberry cream, if it’s available. Then, order the Tingles burger. W here sho u ld we g o to drink like the locals ? This is a tough one, with our many craft breweries (see page 40 for the full rundown). Most of them have quirky tasting rooms, but there’s something especially Asheville about the scene at Wedge Brewing Company in the funky, gritty, repurposed-industrial River Arts District. The Wedge sits right off of the tracks near the French Broad River. Everyone from politicians to marathon runners, green builders to potters drinks here. Awash in the setting sun and surrounded by locally made ironwork, the Wedge hosts the occasional gourmet food truck and oldtime movie shown in the open air. W here can we find mo u ntain tro u t ? If you want a taste of Appalachian authenticity, mountain trout — a delicious freshwater treat — can be a great place to start. But where can you find it fresh and genuinely local? Try Corner Kitchen, a Biltmore Village eatery that specializes in regional cuisine and upscale comfort food. Though the Lobster Trap is best known for its fresh coastal seafood (flown in from Maine), the restaurant offers local trout on a regular basis. It’s late, you should eat something. The 51 Grill stays open after after dark. Eating lunch between the no-man’s hours of 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.? Out on the town until 3 a.m.? Even in a foodtopia like Asheville, your options can be limited. Fortunately, there are some restaurants out there for you late-lunchers and night-owls who would rather not frequent the Waffle House — not that there’s anything wrong with getting scattered, smothered and covered.

Attached to an Exxon gas station, 51 Grill is a small step up from the nofrills greasy-spoon diner, and is a serious late-night haunt. Expect to find truckers eating French dips elbow to elbow with partygoers in high heels and smeared makeup scarfing Philly cheese steaks. Late-night drunk food is the great equalizer. R osetta ’ s K itchen

Rosetta’s Kitchen is a stalwart of the Lexington Avenue scene, and a slice of Asheville — with soy cheese. The all-vegetarian cafeteria-style joint is one of the few places where City Council members eat nachos next to punk rockers. Nothing fuels you up for bar hopping better than Rosetta’s peanut-butter tofu, braised kale and smashed potatoes and gravy. The APBC has a laid-back family vibe, as well as pizza that pulls in plenty of accolades (try the Shear Delight). Dinner and a show is what they do at The Magnetic Field, a café, bar and performance house located in Asheville’s River Arts District. With events from standup comedy to live music, this restaurant and theater is entertaining by design. But should you want to expand your horizons beyond trout, grits and fried green tomatoes, there are a multitude of options at your disposal, many of them based in the traditions of far-off climes. This small mountain town has a lot of stickers on its suitcase. Himalayan? We’ve got it. Spanish tapas? That too. Indian street food? You bet. Here’s a quick guide to where to find global flavors in the neighborhood.

Pho F u sion

Pho Fusion, the first all-Vietnamese restaurant in Asheville, specializes in exactly what you might guess: steaming bowls of pho, the traditional noodle soup. Though chef Tru Phan toys with other specialties, it’s the restaurant’s namesake that draws in repeat customers. Try the eye of round pho, piled with mung bean sprouts, basil and cilantro from the fixings bar. Beyond the food, don’t expect to find any traditional or fancy decor. This spot is for the foodie that relishes finding the diamond in the rough. For a taste of the Mediterranean, head over to Rezaz in Biltmore Village. If “Mediterranean food” brings visions of dolmas and pita bread to mind, chef/owner Reza Setayesh’s take on the sun-drenched foods of that region expand those horizons. Setayesh serves his mezze platter enhanced with muhammara, a Syrian hot-pepper dip. His astonishingly good paella is spotted with braised rabbit and smoky chorizo. What’s more, the service is spectacular. The restaurant’s wine bar, the Enoteca, offers the same high-quality food in a slightly more casual environment. The menu includes a wide array of cheeses, cured meats and housemade spreads that can be combined to make a custom antipasti platter. Should your prefer your Mediterranean food with classic flavor — and a little wiggle — visit Jerusalem Garden Café near Pritchard Park in downtown Asheville. Heiwa was long known for a rather Asheville-style of Japanese food, which is to say slightly hippie. Though it’s still the kind of Japanese joint where the menu reminds vegans of the presence of bonito (dried fish) flake in the miso, Heiwa has an exciting new Japanese-born chef. Daisuke Sugimoto, aka Chef Dai, grew up following his mother around her dumpling restaurant in Tokyo. He still gravitates toward the clean flavors and sensibilities of traditional Japanese food. Someone to drive you around from brewery to brewery while you liberally sample? Well, we’ve got that too. Brews Cruise, started by Asheville local Mark Lyons, provides an insider’s take on the best of local beer. With a designated driver included in the package, it’s a win-win situation. Jump on board one of the Brews Cruise vans or strap on your sneakers for a guided walking tour of downtown Asheville’s craft-beer scene. It’s tipsy — but safe, good fun. And with 10 breweries in the area (and at least two more on the way) there’s plenty of local flavor to sample, whether you’re a seasoned beer connoisseur or a curious newbie. brewscruise.com/asheville It’s not necessary to take a formal tour to witness all this area has to offer in the way of breweries. Should self-guided brewer-ism be more your speed, here’s a list of sudsy area attractions to visit at your leisure. Asheville Brewing Co.’s beers are brewed in two locations, one on the north side and one downtown. The downtown production facility is expanding to facilitate canning some of the ABC’s brews. The original location (675 Merrimon Ave. 254-1281 ashevillebrewing.com) offers a family-friendly atmosphere and $3 second-run movies, while the second locale (77 Coxe Ave. 255-4077) sports an awesome patio. The award-winning Ninja Porter is a local fave.

Craggie Brewing Co.’s Public House is a happening downtown spot for live local music and unique session beers. For a ginger and spruce-tip spiced beer sensation, try the Antebellum Ale, based on an 1840s American recipe (197 Hilliard Ave. 254-0360 craggiebrewingco.com). French Broad Brewery’s small-but-busy tasting room rocks the music and the beer scenes. With live music several nights a week, plus a great location on the other side of the tracks from the Biltmore Village, French Broad keeps south Asheville and Biltmore Village from getting too thirsty. Try the high-ABV Wee-Heavier Scotch Ale — it’s meant to be savored (101 Fairview Road 277-0222 frenchbroadbrewery.com). Green Man Brewery got a makeover and facility expansion after changing ownership in 2010. Craft-beer enthusiasts and groups of lively local soccer players hang out at the handmade wooden bar to sample brewer John Stuart’s creations. Try one of the brewery’s cask-conditioned beers (23 Buxton Ave. 252-5502 greenmanbrewery.com). Highland Brewing Co. lays claim to the title of oldest and largest Asheville brewery. They rolled out their first kegs in 1994 and now produce about 20,000 barrels annually. Highland’s new tasting room gives folks a chance to visit the brewery, hear live, local music and taste a variety of brewer experiments and the tried-and-true in the three-barrel brewing room (12 Old Charlotte Highway 299-3370 highlandbrewing.com). Lexington Avenue Brewery, also known as the LAB, offers gastropub fare in addition to house-brewed beers. Their beers are only available at the taproom, but the owners are expanding to begin bottle distribution. Jason Caughman showcases stellar suds, big-name acts and more at the Pisgah Brewing Company in Black Mountain. Oyster House Brewing Co. brews from a half-barrel system at The Lobster Trap restaurant, where the craft-brewed suds can be found on tap. The brewery’s renowned Oyster Stout pairs beautifully with the restaurant’s creative seafood offerings (35 Patton Ave. 350-0505 oysterhousebeers.com). Pisgah Brewing Co. is one of the few all-organic breweries in the country. The taproom regularly features up to 16 taps of their own brew, from Schwartzbier to Imperial Stout, along with the town staple, Pisgah Pale. In the meadow behind the warehouse-based brewery sits a large summer stage that features regional and national acts. Pisgah’s seasonal Red Devil Belgian, brewed with cherries and raspberries, is the perfect beer for lying in the grass listening to the creek babbling in the background (150 Eastside Drive Black Mountain 669-0190 pisgahbrewing.com). Wedge Brewing Co.’s beers are so popular that there’s typically a line snaking out of the small tasting room onto the front patio and down near the railroad tracks of the River Arts District. Eat local, ASAP M akin g W N C a food destination , one farm at a time

ASAP works to help make sure farms can continue farming, and everyone has access to local foods. by Maggie Cramer How is it that Western North Carolina is blessed with such a thriving food scene? Great local agriculture helps. That’s where the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project comes in. ASAP’s mission is to help local farms thrive by linking farmers to markets and supporters, and building healthy communities through connections to local food. “ASAP’s work over the last decade has focused on helping make sure farms can continue farming and that everyone has access to local foods,” says Charlie Jackson, ASAP’s director. “Our approach has been to create supportive environments in which farms, businesses and consumers can innovate and try new things.” ASAP offers marketing assistance and training to area farmers. The group also connects chefs and food-service buyers at schools and hospitals with the farmers who best suit their needs. And ASAP’s decade-long Local Food Campaign helps all of us reconnect with our food. As part of the campaign, ASAP publishes the Local Food Guide, a free print and online directory of the area’s family farms, tailgate markets and businesses that use local agricultural products. ASAP’s Growing Minds Program works with area schools to foster the next generation of local farm supporters. The program provides training to farmers, teachers, chefs, school-nutrition staff, parents and other community members, as well as resources like seeds, farm field-trip minigrants and lesson plans to provide the education that helps children know where their food comes from. That helps them develop lifelong healthy eating habits. Part of that hands-on work includes cooking demonstra-

And every summer, ASAP hosts the Family Farm Tour — a weekend where WNC farms open to visitors and offer enriching on-farm experiences. That approach seems to be working. “There are more farms doing more things than ever before in our area, and more per capita than just about any place in the country,” says Jackson. “Businesses are opening to feature local ingredients. Farms are expanding and new farms starting. Farmers are trying new things.” And that benefits the entire food community, whether farmer, chef, shopper or diner. Food Guide. Since the inception of the Appalachian Grown program in 2007, local food sales in our region have nearly tripled to $53 million. During the 2010 Family Farm Tour, there were more than 4,500 visits to area farms.

The eyes have it: Actually, new potatoes like these fresh tubers from the tailgate market are generally free of “eyes,” or the starts of shoots prevalent on older spuds. Asheville boasts an abundance of local food. All of the ingredients that make this area’s restaurants stellar (along with the finesse of our local chefs, of course) can be found at tailgate markets nearly every day of the week, at least during the growing season. Visiting tailgate markets gives you the opportunity to meet the source of your food. Many WNC markets are producer-only, meaning that vendors can only sell the food that they grow themselves. Stoney Knob Café in Woodfin offers an eclectic menu with a setting to match. Sometimes Asheville can feel too crowded. When tourist season’s in full swing and the streets are choked with cars, trucks and buses, a place like Hot Springs can be just the ticket. Conversely, sometimes Asheville feels too small — especially when you’re trying to buy something embarrassing at the grocery store. When you want to get away — without submitting to the hassles of long-distance travel — here are some options to help you get the heck out of Dodge. The Mountain Magnolia Inn in Hot Springs is just 33 miles away from Asheville, but feels like another world. The menu at the Inn features comfortable, Continental cuisine with a Southern flair and a focus on local ingredients. Dine by the fireplace in the winter, or on the porch when it’s warm — it’s quiet and gorgeous, if you don’t mind the occasional winged invader. Order a bottle of wine from the moderately priced list — heck, order two. The views are as lovely as the staff, the food is topnotch, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The farm-to-table menu in this new-American tavern has an old-school bent

and leans on reliable flavors — think Lowcountry shrimp and grits and roasted chicken. A sure hand in the kitchen is equally reliable, as is the use of local foods. The shrimp is served on stone-ground grits that were grown just over the ridge. The chicken comes glazed with local sorghum and served with farm-fresh vegetables. But Season’s at Highland Lake Inn, located just a few minutes outside of Hendersonville, truly walks the walk. The inn boasts a large organic garden on site, from which Chile-born chef Peter Fassbender culls much of his produce. The menu is impressive and relies on a substantial amount of local meats, produce and trout, supplemented by coastal seafood, cured meats and cooking techniques that rely on an extensive knowledge of world and classical cuisine. Stoney Knob Café in Weaverville is just minutes north of downtown Asheville and features a menu of Greek, European and American food (with a touch of Asian) that’s as eclectic as the decor. The restaurant adjoins a wine store — meaning that the servers have access to a rather impressive selection of vino. Chef Josh Monroe’s menu revolves around Continental fare that seems to be geared toward enjoying with wine. Pastas abound, for example, and Monroe makes it all fresh daily.
