EATS & DRINKS

Half the fun of eating out is reading the menu. It’s not just a catalog — it’s a story with an introduction (appetizers), character development (drinks and more appetizers), a plot (you get it by now) and an ending that goes great with coffee. Our Eats & Drinks guide bundles the edible lore of Asheville and Buncombe County (and places beyond) into pocket-sized pages that are both an atlas and an adventure. So call a friend, or make a new one, and take your place at the table. Which table? This guide will help you find it.

Media darling: food writers from all over the country write adoringly about Cúrate and its chef, katie Button.

If the following restaurants’ names seem familiar, you’ve probably read about them. Asheville’s eateries are on the itinerary of the national press.

Cúrate Bar de Tapas (p. 92) has been serving Spanish-style tapas downtown for just about three years, but it’s already garnered some impressive accolades. Chef Katie Button trained at elBulli in Roses, Spain, which, until it closed in 2011, was widely regarded as the best restaurant in the world. Since she’s been cooking in Asheville, Button has been nominated for two James Beard Foundation Awards. GQ named Cúrate one of the “12 Most Outstanding Restaurants of 2013” and praised its bocata de calamares (fried squid sandwich) and its cured pork loin from the black Ibérico pigs of Spain. To see the full array of Cúrate’s press mentions, head to the website. To write your own story, make a reservation for dinner. White Duck Taco Shop (p. 80) is likely the first restaurant most people see when they drive into town from the West, whether they know it or not. Its bright orange River Arts District building is a beacon for road-weary tacolovers, visible from the Capt. Jeff Bowen Bridge. Reporters from Southern Living were attracted to its glow, and nominated Asheville for the Tastiest Town in the South (based, in part, on White Duck’s mole-roasted duck confit tacos). Travel Channel reporter Samantha Brown dined on these tacos while vacationing in Asheville. Folks from Martha Stewart Living admired the same dish and also lusted after the banh mi-style tofu with daikon slaw and a ginger glaze. Chai Pani (p. 82) channels India’s vibrant street food culture into dishes that are fun and fresh. Do not leave Asheville without a heaping helping of okra fries (very different from fried okra, by the way), a bowl of fennel-flecked sambar and a freshly-folded tandoori fish wrap. A reporter from Fox News called the restaurant “the hit of the trip,” and New York Magazine proclaimed

it a “star.” But the best testimonials come from enthusiastic diners. The restaurant collects their comments in a guest book and displays daily favorites on a sidewalk signboard. One family cheerfully wrote, “We’ve been here four times in five days! Help us! We are addicts!” Stop reading and make a reservation at The Admiral (p. 91). You’ll need one to eat at this dive bar-turned-experimental-dining extravaganza. The menu changes regularly, so expect the unexpected. Ivan Candido and his kitchen crew are culinary renegades, relying on hard work, instinct and talent more than schooling and technical knowledge. Lonely Planet describes the cuisine as “a clever highbrow-lowbrow mashup.” The New York Times declares it “one of Asheville’s hottest tables.” John T. Edge, writing for Garden & Gun, said he’s “plotting a return trip.”

Table (p. 93) is as fresh as the seasonal, local fare it prepares. The restaurant’s modern atmosphere and farm-to-table concept have caught the attention of Martha Stewart Living and Find. Eat. Drink (a national enewsletter). Food & Wine praised the restaurant’s “hyper-artisanal style” and its dishes that “taste like the Old South via Brooklyn.”

Table for view: Horizons at the grove park Inn offers splendid views of downtown Asheville and the mountains beyond.

Asheville’s dining scene is soaring, earning frequent nods from publications such as Food & Wine, Southern Living, Lonely Planet, The New York Times and Martha Stewart Living. Practically every week, a new restaurant announces its opening. But the restaurant scene hasn’t always been so vibrant. When The Market Place (p. 81, 97) opened in 1979, there were only a handful of restaurants here. Even as new trends alight, Asheville’s longtime restaurants maintain a classic Asheville feel (with modern updates). The Market Place has become a national example for sustainable seafood and responsible sourcing. The majority of its ingredients come from farms within a 100-mile radius of Asheville. The menu features wallet-friendly small plates, as well as more-decadent entrees based on seasonal ingredients. With its sunny yellow color scheme, Salsa’s (p. 84), has brightened Pack Square since 1994. Expect inventive Mexican and Caribbean dishes in large portions with lots of flavors, colors and textures. You’ll find plenty of fresh, grilled vegetables and fruit alongside grilled and marinated meats. Some entrees arrive dramatically at the table in sizzling molcajete bowls. The wait for Salsa’s can be lengthy. While the food is worth the wait, you can also try one of chef/owner Hector Diaz’s other restaurants: Chorizo (p. 84) and Modesto (p. 83) are nearby and the casual, café-style Bomba (p. 74, 100), is right next door.

Laughing Seed Café (p. 93) on Wall Street has been Asheville’s choice for vegetarian cuisine since 1991. The large dining room and spacious patio feel idyllic at any hour, and the menu includes familiar foods with global twists. Families, out-of-towners and locals know it as a go-to for creative, meat-free meals. If you’re on the hunt for meatier fare, try Jack of the Wood (p. 70, 97), which shares ownership with Laughing Seed. The gastropub pairs local brews with hearty dishes inspired by British and Irish pub food. Try the lamb burger with local Lusty Monk mustard or the rabbit ragout. At the Grove Park Inn, Horizons Dining Room (p. 93) has offered polished yet playful dinners for about two decades. The menu changes with the season, but always combines contemporary culinary flare with time-tested favorites. Every dish benefits from the atmosphere: The floor-to-ceiling windows provide an unparalleled view of Asheville’s skyline and the mountains beyond. For dessert (or a mid-afternoon snack), The Chocolate Fetish (p. 77) has been satisfying Asheville’s sweet teeth since 1986. Display cases brim with truffles, rounds and chocolate bars. The store features a small-scale chocolate factory where you can watch the delicacies come together, I Love Lucy-style. Hungry for more? Magnolia’s Raw Bar & Grille (p. 97) has served Asheville surf-and-turf on its expansive patio since 1988. Nearby, Vincenzo’s Ristorante & Bistro (p. 83, 98), which opened in 1990, features a wide array of northern Italian-style dishes in a classic and cozy upstairs dining room. The downstairs piano bar is a charming throwback to the low-lit speakeasies of Thomas Wolfe’s time (his house is right down the street).

Elegant updates: Red beans-and-rice stuffed quail is just one of The junction’s Southern specialties.

Southern food is less about any particular ingredient and more about a frame of mind. History, resourcefulness and flavor come together to create dishes that stick to your ribs and put a smile on your face. Chefs from many different Southern regions have brought their fare to Asheville, so you can find low-country, Appalachian, Southern plains and Cajun classics all in one town. Nestled among studios in the River Arts District, The Junction (p. 91) takes inspiration from its neighbors and focuses on the art of Southern cuisine, offering upscale comfort food in a stylish yet cozy dining room. Start with a craft cocktail, move on to a salad of pickled beets and for the main course, look forward to sweet-tea-brined fried chicken and seasonal accompaniments. On Saturdays and Sundays, stop in for brunch — Southern classics like biscuits and gravy get elegant updates.

Tupelo Honey Café (p. 91) is one of Asheville’s fastest growing brands; the restaurant recently added locations in Greenville, S.C., and Johnson City, Knoxville and Chattanooga in Tennessee. Its regional popularity is a testament to its accessible menu. Breakfast is served all day, so carb up with sweet potato pancakes whenever you’re craving them. For lunch or dinner, go light with a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup, or if you’re more hungry, tuck into the root beer- and molasses-glazed pork tenderloin. For a quick lunch on the go, visit The Lowdown (p. 80) food truck at The Lot on Coxe Avenue where the mobile vendors gather. The menu focuses on hearty sandwiches that are easy on your wallet. Try the BBQ Sammie, which is topped with pickled okra and red cabbage slaw. For dinner, The Lowdown often sets up at The Bywater (p. 96). Check the truck’s Twitter, @ thelowdowntruck, or Facebook page for updates on its daily locations.

To get your Southern food fix with the locals, head to HomeGrown (p. 79). It’s like eating a meal at your childhood best friend’s house. At breakfast, try the corned beef hash, huevos rancheros or veggie frittata, and add a side of cheesy grits. Later in the day, the fried chicken sandwich is the hands-down winner, topped with pickled onions and a horseradish honey mustard. Save room for desserts like banana pudding, or an ice cream sandwich made with chocolate chip cookies.

Seven Sows Bourbon and Larder (p. 91) is the brick-and-mortar offshoot of the Blind Pig Supper Club, a monthly dinner event that sells out almost as soon as tickets are released. Seven Sows serves a strong lineup of Appalachian foods, so if you’ve never tried giblet and egg gravy, corn pone, pig-head meatloaf or goat, check it out. If you’re in the mood for something more familiar, fried chicken, trout and pork chops are also on the menu. Try The Blackbird (p. 91) for a Southern meal in a modern, urban environment. The menu includes a bounty of local ingredients, and features comfort foods such as pot pies, as well as low-country favorites and steaks accompanied by Southern sides. One of the owners is a pastry chef, so plan to eat dessert. The coconut cake has been known to invoke sighs of satisfaction.

Spinning a new wheel: Chef Reza Setayesh brings flavors from Europe, north Africa and the Middle East to Biltmore Village. You can’t reinvent the wheel, but you can spin it in a new way. Looking for a dish that tastes novel? These chefs aren’t limited by geography. The plates they create represent concepts of their own making. At Limones (p. 84), the food benefits from an intertwining of cultures. Chef Hugo Ramirez trained in French techniques and California cuisine, but his passion is for the food he grew up with in Mexico City. The menu includes traditional dishes like tamales, updated with creativity and flare. Empanadas come stuffed with salmon and mascarpone cheese, and N.C. swordfish is crowned with pineapple and green onion pico and Mirin chili sauce. For a more casual twist on Mexican food, seek out El Kimchi (p. 80) food truck and its Korean food in Mexican-style packaging. Try the bulgogi beef in a taco, torta, burrito or quesadilla, or go with the traditional bibimbap. The house-made (or rather, truck-made) kimchi is a spicy mix of pickled vegetables that transcends condiment, and tastes as good mixed with rice as it does by the spoonful. El Kimchi often sets up for lunch at The Lot on Coxe Avenue, and at the Wedge Brewery (p. 100). Find its location on Facebook or Twitter at @El_Kimchi. Chef Reza Setayesh grew up traveling with his father and sampling foods from all over Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. At Rezaz (p. 92), his Biltmore Village restaurant, he combines the flavors he learned abroad with local ingredients. The dishes that result are exciting and accessible. Crab cakes get dressed up with the addition of scallops and a salad of fried pita and greens. N.C. beef brisket receives a familiar horseradish sauce, only reinterpreted with accompanying oxtail mozzarella arancini (Italian fried-rice balls). Asheville has plenty of vegetarian offerings, but for really inspired meatand dairy-free cuisine, try Plant (p. 93). There’s no political baggage attached to the menu. The restaurant doesn’t regard veganism as a lifestyle so much as a unique approach to food. It’s a spirited showcase of the best that plants have to offer, proving that vegan food can be an indulgence. There’s a delectably rich mixed-mushroom grill that goads its meaty counterpart.

Move ‘em out: Mamacita’s gets you in and out quickly, in case you have important things to do. The human appetite is kind of like having a wound-up alarm clock in your stomach. The longer you go between meals, the closer you get to the unnerving hunger-induced blare. Fortunately, Asheville has plenty of quick, counterservice options to reset your clock — or at least hit snooze until dinner time.

City Bakery (p. 72) is Asheville’s go-to source for carbohydrates. In the 2012 Best of WNC poll, Xpress readers declared it local champion of sweet and savory baked goods, as well as bread. At its three locations, a well-stocked pastry case offers cookies, cakes, biscuits and rolls for quick snacks. The menu features sandwiches, paninis made with house-baked bread and salads focused on fresh ingredients. For a pickup breakfast any time of day, head to The Green Sage Coffeehouse & Café (p. 68). Gluten-free options abound, even in the pancake

and bagel selection. Sides include sweet potato home fries and sauteed kale, so you’ll be sure to get your veggies for the day. For lunch, salads and rice bowls maintain the focus on vegetables, but there’s also plenty in the way of sandwiches and burgers. Wash it all down with fresh-squeezed juice, an all-fruit smoothie or a yerba mate latte. The West End Bakery (p. 75) cinnamon roll should signify world peace or perfect unity or some other lofty ideal, such is the greatness of its size and symmetry and golden color. It’s not too heavy or too sweet, but it’s just rich enough to taste like sunshine and honey, and sized for sharing. West End’s sandwiches soar to similar heights; the bread is thick, and the fillings are fresh and creative. For a grown-up California-style burrito, head to Mamacita’s (p. 85). Like other burrito joints, there’s a hot bar from which you choose your fillings, but this particular bar holds tons of extra options, most of them house-made. The standard pulled pork and rice are there, but there’s also sweet potato mash, kale and quinoa. Plus, this joint has specials, and they’re brilliant. If you’re there on a lucky day, get the papusas.

out and about: The Southern kitchen and Bar has a bustling patio that’s great for people-watching on Lexington Avenue.

Asheville benefits from pleasant weather throughout the four seasons, so even in the throes of winter, there’s some chance a 65-degree day could send you searching for a great place to sit outside. Downtown, many restaurants offer sidewalk seating, but a wide patio requires creative planning to accommodate passersby and the diners who love to watch them pass. The Social, W xyz Bar and Sky Bar (p. 79, 98, 101) resolve this dilemma by going up — on the roof, specifically. While they’re mostly cocktail bars, all three serve light bites. Grab a slice at Mellow Mushroom’s (p. 88) spacious and much-lauded patio, or share a pie and a pitcher with friends while you people-watch. For a prime view of Pack Square, have a seat at The Noodle Shop (p. 77) or Posana Café (p. 70, 100). For a burger and a brew in a beer garden, head down Biltmore to Wicked Weed (p. 81, 100). To catch some moonlight, visit The Southern Kitchen and Bar (p. 81, 97). It’s a great place for a Sunday afternoon bloody mary, as well. Looking for live entertainment with your al-fresco feast? Head to Crêperie Bouchon (p. 80) where the light fare is often accompanied by acoustic music. For something more filling, the Crêperie’s parent restaurant, Bouchon Bistro (p. 80) offers outside seating within earshot of the music. Beyond downtown, outside space is easier to find, but not all patios are equal. Get a burger and fries or a gyro at The Universal Joint (p. 72, 98), and enjoy the bustle of Haywood Road, West Asheville’s main thoroughfare.

Turning (out) Japanese: Wasabi bustles and hums most nights of the week, creating some of WnC’s favorite sushi.

Mela’s (p. 83) lunch buffet is a trove of Indian eats at an affordable price. It hosts a rotating selection of soups, curries and tandoori specialties, plus unlimited naan from the tandoor oven. At dinner, the place takes on a posh, urban feel. It couples a modern, relaxed atmosphere with rich, traditional flavors. Watch the sushi chefs at Wasabi (p. 84) do their thing. They seem totally focused on their work, but suddenly, they’ll look up at you with a grin and pass you a little dish of something special, your reward for paying attention to their craft. Wasabi offers sushi-roll favorites and an expansive menu of Japanese entrees, including hibachi, in a friendly atmosphere.

Heiwa Shokudo (p. 83) specializes in Japanese dishes with Asheville twists. The menu boasts both traditional sushi rolls and “chef ’s creations,” such as the sweetie pie roll: sweet potato tempura and almond butter rolled in rice and topped with avocado. The entree lineup features brimming bowls of noodle soup and an array of rice dishes. For Vietnamese eats in downtown Asheville, seek out Pho Ya Belly (p. 80) food truck, which offers a concise, well-executed menu of spring rolls, pho and banh mi sandwiches. Look for Pho Ya Belly at The Lot on Coxe Avenue, where the food trucks gather. For its daily location, visit phoyabelly.com Why has Korean food taken so long to gain widespread popularity? This question could be the greatest mystery of our age. Luckily, in Asheville, there’s no need for wonder or exasperation: Stonebowl Korean (p. 87) offers the full Korean dining experience with sizzling hot bowls of crispy rice, pickled vegetables and marinated meats.

He eats here: the big man, the head honcho, the commander in chief, POTUS. Or at least he has. And it can be expected that he will again, even if his campaign days are over. (During his last visit shortly after re-election, he alluded to a possible Appalachian retirement.) Here’s where to eat like he ate. Tucked away in the River Arts District, 12 Bones Smokehouse (p. 72) is an unassuming venue, but locals and tourists alike can smell the smoky meats, piquant sauces and classic sides from far, far away. POTUS has felt the call of the ‘cue three times: After a 2008 campaign speech, he ate lunch at the smokehouse and was so impressed that he decided to bring the first lady back for more. On their 2010 visit, the first couple feasted on ribs, collard greens, baked beans, mac and cheese and cornbread. When he returned for a speech in 2013, he dispatched a Secret Service agent for take-out. On the same 2010 vacation, the Obamas had dinner at Corner Kitchen (p. 91), a casually elegant spot in Biltmore Village. The century-old historic house made a cozy setting for the first couple’s corn-and-crab chowder and mahi-mahi. If you want to sit where the president sat, make a reservation for his table. It bears a special plaque and, perhaps, some of his executive prowess.

Where West Ashevilleans go for burgers: Burgermeister’s lets you dress up the traditional in a variety of creative ways.

Everybody needs a casual spot to relax over familiar fare — somewhere in the neighborhood. No need to dress up; arrive as you are at these friendly spots.

Burgermeister’s (p. 66, 96) puts greatness on a bun. Both vegetarians and meat-lovers appreciate the burgers’ creative contents. Patties come in ground beef or turkey, grilled chicken or house-made veggie, and the toppings go way beyond lettuce and tomato; add sauerkraut, banana peppers, fried onions or even a hot dog. With its commitment to the environment, Neo Burrito (p. 85) looks after the neighborhood it feeds. The additions of rainwater recycling and an urban garden make the Biltmore Park location a charismatic and inviting place to eat. The California-style burritos are loaded with flavor, and lighter options such as salads, chili and tacos are equally satisfying. With locations in north Asheville and Arden, locals know to go to Marco’s Pizzeria (p. 88) when they crave New York-style pies. Choose from a wide

variety of toppings: classic pepperoni, black olives or sausage, or add asparagus, capers or prosciutto. The eggplant is a must, even for those suspicious of the purple vegetable.

Once a pub develops a following, it becomes immovable. Such was the case with the Thirsty Monk (p. 89, 98, 100). When the owners planned to move the Gerber Village location to Biltmore Park, the regulars protested, and the pub remained. It features 20 draft beers, most of which are American craft brews and U.K. classics, and a menu designed with beer drinking in mind. A family meal doesn’t always mean you have to cook it at home. At Vinnie’s Neighborhood Italian (p. 83), classic Italian recipes come in family-

ready portions. Choose from more than a dozen hearty dishes, including eggplant parmigiana, spaghetti with meatballs and rigatoni with chicken and broccoli. Passing the platter around the table, you’ll feel right at home.

Cocoa love: julie Stehling of Early girl Eatery has a penchant for the french Broad Chocolate Lounge. Experience Asheville food through the people who know it best: the restaurant owners. Xpress asked four proprietors of some of Asheville’s most beloved establishments to guide us through their ultimate night out. Julie Stehling knows how to serve the whole family. Not only do she and husband, John, have two young boys; they also own Early Girl Eatery (p. 91), known for its classic Southern specialties (particularly, breakfast) and its family friendly atmosphere. Here are Julie’s food and drink picks: “Ultimate Ice Cream (p. 76) is a favorite spot. Often, we hike the river trail at Warren Wilson, me and my kids. They’re set up for chocolate-chip cookie dough shakes, which are my kids’ favorite. “When we head downtown, Limones (p. 84) is always on our list, whether it’s just me and John, or my 8-year-old, who loves Limones as well. If we get together for a sit-down meal, Limones is always there. The jalapeño martini is one drink that’s great, even if you’re hanging out with your kids. It’s delicious and strong enough to hold you through the night without needing more than one. “All the performance artists who are out are always a big part of any night downtown. The kids roam around Pritchard Park chasing pigeons. There’s always something going on. “French Broad Chocolate Lounge (p. 77) is always a great place for kids. For me, it’s the liquid chocolate, the chai spice one, and the boys just like brownies. “I like to have a drink at The Southern (p. 81, 97) on the patio. The Southern is a place where I like to watch people go by, and the drinks are good. The other one I would add to that is [The Social], being on the rooftop. There’s so much that goes on in Asheville. It’s a place where you can watch that with a good drink in your hand.”

Ben Mixson and Laura Reuss sling tacos with global twists in the River Arts District at White Duck Taco Shop (p. 80). In spring of 2013, they opened Pizza Pura (p. 88) just down the street, where they serve Neapolitan-style pizzas from a wood-fire oven called Mt. Vesuvius. When they’re not working at one of their restaurants, here’s where they hang out. Ben: “I don’t want to think when I go out to eat after I’ve had a long week. I want to go somewhere where I can ask, say Jacob [Sessoms] at Table (p. 93), ‘What’s good?’ and he’ll say, and I’ll get that.” Laura: “I just want to go have a good time and no stress. We like to hit Table. Sometimes we go to The Lobster Trap (p. 90, 97). Sometimes we go to Cúrate (p. 92). We just want to go have fun, have a few drinks and enjoy ourselves. And we want really good food. We go to a lot of local, downtown establishments.” Ben: “A lot of times, we’ll just go home and grill, drink wine. The Chop Shop (p. 81) on Charlotte Street, we’ll go there and load up on whatever Josh [Wright] says is good.” Laura: “Buy a couple of bottles of red wine, and it’s on. Ben smokes cigars, and we hang out outside on the hammock and grill out.” Ben: “Lately, I’ve been going to The Junction (p. 91). It’s right next door to Pizza Pura. I love going over there and getting a large Campari and soda and just relaxing.” With business partner Kevin Westmoreland, Joe Scully owns Corner Kitchen (p. 91) in Biltmore Village and Chestnut (p. 68) downtown. He’s a

classy yet down-to-earth guy, equally happy serving food to President Obama and Joe the Plumber (he’s done both). When he hits the town with his lovely lady, here’s where he goes. “We do a lot of going to several different places and having appetizers. We generally stick to downtown, so we would start at Limones, and then we go over to Cúrate. It’s sort of the next step because they have really nice, small things that you can grab a bite and keep moving. “The food is surprisingly good at The LAB (p. 81, 100). They have an amazingly good cheese plate with a lot of local stuff, and they use local honey, and it’s very simple, but it’s very good. You can have beer there, but you can also have mixed drinks. “Almost every time we go out, with or without kids, we always finish up at French Broad Chocolate Lounge. That’s the hit parade. It’s our own kind of crawl. “For a bar program, MG Road (p. 83) is one of the places where they have a bar program that’s formidable, that’s extremely good. So if we want drinks, we might start out at MG Road. “To me, the moveable feast is the way to go.”

Refined and fun: Storm Rhum Bar offers an atmosphere both cozy and cosmopolitan — and a menu worth talking about. There’s no telling when and where a romance will start. For some, tacos or barbecue pique mutual affection just as much as oysters or chocolate fondue. If you’re looking for a classic approach to a date night, look no further.

There’s that scene in Lady and the Tramp where the two dogs smooch after slurping a common spaghetti noodle. That’s basically what happens at Zambra (p.92), except there are beautiful people instead of dogs and creative small plates for sharing instead of plain old pasta. It seems there’s a fundamental element of romance in sharing a dish. Add a great wine selection, low lighting, cozy seating and a luxurious dining room, and you’ll be — actually, we don’t want to know what you’ll be doing.

French cuisine has that je ne sais quoi (we really don’t know) that leads to love. At Bouchon Bistro (p. 80), the candlelight, the French music and the wine set the mood. The classic bistro-style escargots, braised marrow bones, steamed mussels, beef Bourguignon and other comfort foods are sure to warm your belly and your heart. If you’re looking for conversation-starting foods, check out Storm Rhum Bar and Bistro (p.70, 101). Since 2011, the menu has evolved into an array of

on-point Southern-inspired cuisine with artisan ingredients. Ooh and ah over the Sea Island red peas or discuss the merits of Anson Mills grits. If you’ve stayed up post-dinner, Storm serves a late-night menu of refined and fun fare.

If you’re planning on staying up really late, have dinner and get a room. The Red Stag Grill (p. 92, 101) at the Grand Bohemian Hotel offers deca-

dent dining in a rustic, hunting lodge-style atmosphere. But if you don’t want to eat in the dining room, you can order truffle-glazed Chilean sea bass, marscapone cream cheese cake and a glass (or two) of Veuve Clicquot to your room. If you’re not private types, head out to Posana Café (p. 70, 100) on Pack Square, where you can see and be seen (by each other, of course) in an elegant and bright dining area, flanked by large windows looking out on one of Asheville’s most vibrant squares. The menu combines local fare with specially sourced ingredients, and every dish is gluten-free. If it’s really amoré, check out Strada (p. 83) for classic Italian food that complements your flame. There’s a dish to satisfy every palate, from pizza to pasta to sautéed fare. Don’t worry if you’re a picky eater. Something at Strada will certainly please you, and your date will marvel at your cultivation — sophisticated, yet approachable. Fresh breads and quality wine complete the Continental dining experience.

Irie ites: Chef Aaron Thomas has made nine Mile into a sunny spot, no matter what the weather. Some restaurants make a world within their walls. Step through the door, and you’re transported to a familiar place where the world is right and the smells are heavenly. Asheville boasts many restaurants where the mood makes you smile. Every evening, Nine Mile (p.79) throws a golden light out into the historic Montford neighborhood. The alluring smell of garlic drifts up the block, and if the street is quiet, reggae tunes drift on the breeze. The restaurant serves an idiosyncratic lineup of Caribbean pasta and rice dishes. It’s the kind of place where you should always order the special, and where something special is bound to happen. Something smells good at Loretta’s (p. 90). It’s not a particular smell; rather, it’s a general ambiance of toasting bread, steaming soup, hot coffee and love of simple, nourishing foods. Most everything is made from scratch, including the thick-cut breads. The pimento cheese is some of the best in Asheville, and the lemon bars taste like brightness itself. The open kitchen, small dining room, friendly staff and weekly specials make for the kind of place you could eat lunch every day. There’s no geographic reason for the name of Sunny Point Café (p. 79). Rather, its name denotes the bright spot the place inevitably brings to your day, whether you’re there for its nationally renowned (and more important, locally renowned) huevos rancheros, its breakfast (served all day) or its meatloaf dinner (just like mama’s). Come hungry, but not impatient: Most times before 2:30 p.m., there’s quite a wait.

A visit to Over Easy Café (p. 79) feels like a swing in a hammock. It’s light and airy, and the breakfast is nourishing but not gut-busting. Dishes have thoughtful touches, like the French toast, which is topped with lavendervanilla yogurt. The smoothies and fresh-squeezed juices actually are designed to make you feel happy and healthy. Be sure to get there before the day gets away, because here it’s breakfast and lunch only. Meet Suzy Phillips, the owner of Gypsy Queen Cuisine (p. 80) food truck. She will not let you leave her line until she’s seen you smile, and her falafel and chicken shawarma are grin-inducing. The Lebanese street food is alive with the flavors of pickled turnips, mint and tahini, and it will turn the corners of your mouth right up.

Laurey’s (p. 76, 89) has embraced Asheville for more than two decades. That commitment to feeding the city right has earned it beloved status. The wide, sunny dining room provides a place to breathe deep and relax. Pick something out from the fresh-made deli case. Most every dish is brightly colored and brimming with fresh vegetables and herbs. Or get something to save for later: Grab-and-go portions make Laurey’s easy to take out and eat.

Best in the west: Owner Mai Medvedev shows off some of what umi offers — some of WnC’s best sushi, in Hendersonville. Many of Asheville’s natural attractions aren’t actually in Asheville. When you venture out of the city for hikes, canoe trips, scenic drives and adventure in general, take the opportunity to explore Western North Carolina’s smaller towns. Here’s a journey around the points of the compass. After a waterfall walk in DuPont State Forest, south of Asheville, check out another kind of water feature in Hendersonville: sushi at Umi (p. 104) Japanese restaurant. The fish selection and the rolls are traditional, but everything tastes fresh, firm and well put together. Here and there, additions of mango, banana and jalapeño add a clever twist to familiar rolls. On the other side of Hendersonville’s quaint downtown, West First Wood-Fired Pizza (p. 104) serves artisan pizzas with crisp crusts and fresh

toppings.

Enjoy dinner at One Love Jamaican Restaurant (p. 105) near Lake Junaluska. It’s an unusual location for really solid international comfort food, but it’s worth the trip. Make plans for banana cornbread, jerk chicken and oxtail stew. In Waynesville, The Sweet Onion (p. 105) serves classic pan-Southern and low-country fare in a modern setting. The menu focuses on down-home selections in genteel stylings, including blackened catfish with mashed sweet potatoes and fried okra. Down the road in Sylva, Soul Infusion Teahouse and Bistro (p. 105) offers dozens of varieties of tea by the cup, pot and pound. The light fare focuses on healthy, artisan ingredients with items that please both vegetarians and meateaters. Just north of Asheville in Weaverville, Stoney Knob Café (p. 85) serves, in the words of its motto, cuisine from near and far. The menu hosts a mash-up of global flavors executed with flair, offering both Greek lamb shank and Thai tilapia in a way that’s endearing (and delicious), not confusing.

For breakfast or dessert, visit Well-Bred Bakery and Café (p. 72) in Weaverville’s historic downtown. It’s a celebrated neighborhood institution that serves melt-in-your-mouth quiche, classic cookies and decadent cakes and desserts. Even farther north, Knife & Fork in Spruce Pine (p. 105) takes farmto-table cuisine seriously. Many of the ingredients come from within walking distance of the restaurant. In Hot Springs, start your day on the Appalachian Trail. The Smoky Mountain Diner (p. 104) sits right on the Georgia-to-Maine trek, offering

hearty food for the hungry hiker. Grab breakfast or a burger and listen to the foot-travelers’ tales. For a more polished atmosphere, try Iron Horse Station (p. 104), which serves accessible entrees and sandwiches to visitors who seek the town’s therapeutic waters. To the east, Swannanoa’s Native Kitchen and Social Pub (p. 97) is a trendy, urban hangout in a small-town setting. The menu pulls from Southern and soul-food influences, but it also channels Asheville’s affection for fresh, local ingredients and vegetarian fare. The bar serves beer, wine and sake cocktails, and live music and trivia happen regularly. In Black Mountain, look no further than The Morning Glory Café (p. 70) for three squares of updated classics. Add an array of fresh fruit to your pancakes; choose from a burger or a banh mi at lunch; try tandoori-spiced lamb or beef tenderloin at dinner. For a nearby cup of coffee, Dynamite Roasting Co. (p. 78) hosts a neighborhood coffee bar in the building where its operations began. The small roaster is on display, and sometimes, you can catch it in action. Hang out on the porch with a cup and a cookie from east Asheville’s Filo Pastries (p. 72).

Eclairly the best: Old Europe’s eclairs have made a name for themselves, and they’re two-for-one on Wednesdays. Have fun. Indulge. Eat dessert. Asheville has plenty of sweet spots. Consider them the cherry on top.

Old Europe (p. 78) combines Asheville’s Continental charms into a dessert experience that would be first-rate in any country. The pastry case is filled with classic eclairs and linzers, as well as every kind of cake you might crave: cheesecake, mousse cake, tortes, chocolate layer varieties and more. The selections are made fresh daily, so you can choose a new favorite with every visit. The French Broad Chocolate Lounge (p. 77) has a fairy-tale quality about it. It’s almost too whimsical to feel real. If you can imagine a flavor, it’s probably there in a truffle. But truffles are just a small part of the rich experience. Chocolate cakes with different levels of sweetness line the tops of the cases. A battalion of custards, mousses and other treats wait to be dispatched to eager diners. Chocolate comes in cups, too: traditional cocoa, cold sipping chocolate, vegan drinks and Aztec-inspired sippers await. For pastries that double as eye candy, visit Donatelli Cake Designs (p. 72). These pastries benefit from classic, French culinary stylings. Eat them in the shop or give them as gifts. Their surfaces are glossy with sugar, bedecked with precisely cut fruit, drizzled with chocolate, swirled with cream and flecked with nuts. They’re swoon-worthy at first sight, so just imagine how they must taste. Now to color outside the lines a bit: Most people wouldn’t peg Isis Restaurant and Music Hall (p. 93, 96) as a dessert destination. The venue hosts

exceptional jazz, bluegrass, folk and, occasionally, something funkier. It also offers dinner service and a late-night menu. For these reasons, you should go to Isis, but if that’s not enough, go for dessert. Each little bowl of what can only be described as joy has its own style. They’re soulful, intriguing and a little daring. Try the black-bottom butterscotch pot de crème with cinnamon churros.

Screamin’ good: don’t leave town without trying both our local ice-cream spots. How could you argue with that advice? Most people don’t need to be convinced of the merits of the frozen delight that is ice cream. But resist the Breyers and head for a cold scoop that has charm and authenticity. Asheville has two beloved ice cream makers, with stores all over town and distribution to many markets, restaurants and grocery stores. A delightful scoop is never far away. At The Hop’s (p. 75) Merrimon Avenue or Haywood Road locations, enjoy a sundae or a cone with live music. The shop often hosts kid-friendly entertainment, and while the kids watch the show with a cup of mint chocolate chip, parents can enjoy grown-up flavors like bourbon chipotle porter and sweet beet. If you don’t do dairy, you can still enjoy ice cream. The Hop has plenty of sorbets and vegan ice cream in equally intriguing flavors.

Ultimate Ice Cream (p. 76) boasts equally enticing flavors. Most days, they’re scooping between 27 and 35 varieties of rich, high butter-fat ice cream. Choose from chocolate-raspberry truffle, goat cheese and bing cherry, maple walnut and banana pudding, to name just a few. The ever-changing chalkboard that displays the flavors also features sorbet, soy ice cream and gelato.

The fab five and beyond: Want a delicious memory? Take home a locally made product, and bring back some for your friends. If you’re an out-of-towner, we have plenty of ways to take home a piece of the local food scene. Here are a few of Asheville’s fine artisan food products. Watch for the gem-like jars from Imladris Farm, a seventh-generation family enterprise located just southeast of Asheville. The farm makes blackberry, blueberry and raspberry jams and apple butter. Many of our finest breakfast spots know that Imladris is the jelly on their biscuits — literally. Ever eat something so good it makes you feel frozen for a moment? That’s the effect of UliMana raw chocolate truffles. Each bite is an intense experience, and because the truffles are naturally sweetened with agave or palm syrup, they’re relatively guilt-free. If you’re in the habit of accidentally-on-purpose eating a whole box of crackers, pick up a box of the Roots & Branches variety. Share them with a friend or two, because you won’t be able to resist eating one after another of the dainty, olive oil and wheat flour wafers. They come in different varieties, delicately spiced with herbs, and pair well with local goat cheese. Make apple slices, ice cream or even a spoon sing with a jar of Carmelita from Looking Glass Creamery. It’s the grown-up cousin of caramel

sauce, made from goat’s milk for a grounded, earthy depth of flavor. A couple of spoonfuls will send you. Explore the wilder side of Asheville food with Lusty Monk mustard. It’s coarse-ground and punchy, great for elevating sandwiches and salad dressings. For even more burn, try a jar of salsa from Smoking J’s Fiery Foods. The farm grows some of the hottest peppers in the world. The Roasted Ghost Salsa contains a tiny bit of Bhut Jolokia Ghost Pepper. A few bites will bring some moisture to your brow, but how could that be bad?

unleashed: Battery park Book Exchange’s motto welcomes dogs and “well-behaved owners.” Asheville’s a town of folks who love their canine companions and don’t want to leave them at home. Morning coffee or evening drinks are better with Spot around. Here’s how to spend a full day with your four-legged friend by your side. For coffee, head to Edna's of Asheville (p. 78). The north Asheville café is named for the owners’ beloved pug. Relax on the patio, and enjoy the doggie portraits that bedeck the dining room's walls. At lunch, rollick on the large, covered porch of Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company’s (p. 87, 99) downtown location. Hula hoop together. Play the Giant Connect Four game. Toss some cornhole. Be sure to enjoy a slice and a Shiva IPA while you’re at it.

For an afternoon read, ramble over to Battery Park Book Exchange (p. 101) in the Grove Arcade. Your dog can relax on the plush carpet while you repose in a button-leather chair with a glass of Champagne in hand. Later in the day, get social at Altamont Brewing Company (p. 99) in West Asheville. Spot will enjoy hobnobbing, too. He's sure to find friends of his species while you enjoy a craft brew. Like a backyard should be: The Bywater, set on the french Broad River, is great fun in summer (and winter offers bonfires). Some bars feel born out of the ground they occupy, as if the town and the land came together and declared, “Here is a great place to drink.” What results is an experience far greater than the contents of a glass.

The Bywater (p. 96) combines the fun of a backyard with the relaxed social scene of a riverside speakeasy. It’s bounded by the French Broad, which provides amusement in and of itself. Arrive at the Bywater by kayak if you like — the bar’s crafty owners fashioned a landing area just for that. Grab a beer from one of the 18 taps, and head back to your boat, or sit at a picnic table and watch the water flow. The Bywater is at once spirited and Recommended on TripAdvisor

wholesome. In the early evening, parents bring their kids to play. You can bring your own picnic and cook out on one of the grills. Play board games, toss cornhole or horseshoes and, later in the night, dance to live music. Have you ever seen those pictures of Brazilian beach clubs where beautiful people scatter about the frame in all modes of celebration and relaxation? If Asheville has an equivalent, it’s Wedge Brewing Company (p. 100), although there’s more plaid there than in the tropics. Walk down on a warm evening, and feel as though you’ve discovered an impromptu party. A hodgepodge of chairs and picnic tables cover the old railway yard, and people cluster randomly or sit on the ground. Kids and dogs play while their stewards sip beers as trains rumble past. The coveted craft brews on tap are available almost exclusively at The Wedge, where the popular Iron Rail IPA earns its own express window. When the evening calls for wine, Santé Wine Bar & Taproom (p. 101) sets you up in quirky, cosmopolitan quarters. It’s chic and welcoming. Wine enthusiasts will find a well-curated selection of bottles, while novices will feel equally comfortable. That’s because most people experience a learning curve at Santé, since many of the wines come from kegs. The bartenders are used to answering questions, and they’ll teach you something new without coming across as preachy. Why wine on tap? It cuts down on the waste and cost involved in bottling, and it protects the wine from premature contact with oxygen. In true Asheville style, it’s fresh and green. After wandering The Biltmore Estate, head over to the farm and Antler Village. Meet the animals, and then observe your newfound farmyard friends from the vantage point of Cedric’s Tavern (p. 68, 96). It’s the newest restaurant on the Estate, and it channels Asheville’s enthusiasm for pub-grub and craft beer. Sip a Cedric’s Brown Ale and munch on a basket of English-style fish and chips. If you’ve been to one of the aforementioned places, you may have lingered awhile — Asheville’s bars tend to keep people for more than one drink. What you need now is a bloody mary. And the smooth grooves of yacht rock. That’s where The Southern Kitchen & Bar (p. 81, 97) comes in. Its house bloody mary is brunch in a glass (although if you’re looking for an actual meal, they’ve got that, too). The Southern’s mix is spicy and savory, accented with a meat-and-cheese stuffed pepper. On Sundays, you can also make your own from the bloody mary bar. Sit out on the patio and let the soft rock stylings of DJ Kipper Schauer ease you on through the rest of the weekend.

THE RundOWn On LOCAL CRAfT BREWERIES

Fresh pour: One of Asheville’s newest breweries, Wicked Weed, has more than two dozen of its own beers on tap.

By THOM O’HEARn Asheville may have called itself “beer city” before the rest of the country agreed, but each year it’s increasingly difficult for other cities to argue. With Sierra Nevada and New Belgium building and with Oskar Blues and a couple of nanobreweries joining the large group of existing breweries, it’s hard to think of another East Coast destination with more local beer on tap.

ASHEVILLE AREA

Altamont Brewing Company: A lot of people think of Altamont as a local

bar rather than a brewery, and it’s easy to see why: it operated soley as a bar for more than a year while the owners saved and ordered their brewery equipment. The strategy to build an audience ahead of building a brewery paid off. Altamont is now a popular local watering hole on the west end of Haywood Road in West Asheville.

Asheville Brewing Co.: As great as it is to have stellar breweries just being breweries, there’s something to be said for a full-service joint like ABC. Not simply content to brew a popular local IPA (Shiva) and Porter (Ninja), Asheville brewing tosses pizza, screens movies, builds sandwiches, hosts parties and more while constantly coming out with new beers. While kids are equally welcome at either location, Merrimon has the full arcade and “kiddier” vibe. The downtown location is less sticky and has an adult-friendly outdoor space. Burial Beer Co. (coming summer ’13): With a location mere blocks from Green

Man, it will be hard not to stop by Burial when it opens its doors. If you can see it, you can drink it, right? Burial’s pedigree only adds to the enticement: the three owners are beer-savvy Seattle transplants looking to inject a bit of West Coast (and farmhouse) flavor into the local beer scene. A Saison, a rye IPA and a dryhopped lager are all expected as part of the initial lineup.

French Broad Brewery: The brewers at French Broad craft a solid Europeaninspired repertoire, and their Gateway Kolsch is a regional favorite for entrylevel craft beer drinkers. After running at capacity for years, French Broad plans

to have both a pilot brewery and a canning line start up this year. Some fresh highlights: new recipes at the tasting room and Wee Heavier available in a can.

Green Man Brewery: Located south of downtown on what used to be an empty street, Green Man has been ahead of its time for years. The brewery’s tasting room, affectionately referred to as “Dirty Jack’s,” possesses a similar character to its flagship beers (British). Expect plenty of soccer on the telly, at least one beer on cask and a loyal local clientele. Now, thanks to a recent expansion, Green Man has one of the best sets of house taps in Asheville. On any given day, expect to find everything from authentic West Coast IPAs to solid barrel-aged stouts. Let’s hope the increased variety in beer is the only thing to change down there this year. Highland Brewing Company: You can’t talk about Asheville beer without

talking about Highland. The old guard of the beer scene, Highland has made a name for itself with Gaelic Ale (a malt-forward, lager-like ale) and other friendly beers. Their tasting room is now an east Asheville venue in its own right, and it’s worth a visit, whether or not there’s a band. Take the Highland tour (and follow it up with a Troy & Sons distillery tour) for a fun-filled and boozy day. Just make sure you have a ride afterward.

Lexington Avenue Brewery: In the last few years, Lexington Avenue Brewery

(aka LAB) has weathered high brewer turnover. Yet they’ve managed to not only remain hugely popular, but grow. And it’s a good sign that owner Mike Healy put his money on current brewery employees to step up and take over the LAB brewhouse. With a new, fully tweaked beer lineup as of this spring and an expansion underway next door, keep an eye on LAB’s niche of Lexington.

Oyster House Brewing Company: After years operating inside of The Lob-

ster Trap, brewer Billy Klingel has liberated Oyster House. His new West Asheville location across from Sunny Point is built with an eye to the future, with oysters and food in addition to oyster stouts and blonde ales. Even though Oyster House broke out of its shell, you’ll still be able to find its beers back downtown at The Lobster Trap.

Pisgah Brewing: Sure it’s one of the farthest “Asheville” breweries from downtown proper, but Pisgah gives you a reason to make the trip. While you might easily find the eponymous Pale and a few other favorites on tap at bars around town, it’s extremely hard to find at least half of the 15 or so house beers they rotate and pour at the brewery. Add a stellar live music schedule and it really doesn’t seem so far away. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. (coming to Mills River, fall ‘13): The nation’s sec-

ond largest craft brewer is opening just outside of Asheville. It looks like trips to the Asheville airport are about to get a whole new type of “layover.” While the opening date for the pub and public tours is still fuzzy, they anticipate brewing as early as fall ’13. Check out the Sierra Nevada or Mountain Xpress websites for up-to-date information.

Thirsty Monk Pub and Brewery: When Thirsty Monk talked about shuttering

its Gerber Village location, locals were so upset that owner Barry Bialik decided to keep it open as a full-service pub. But that doesn’t change the fact that the brewing operation is growing, and moving to Biltmore Park. At the new location, Thirsty Monk is still serving a variety of beer. However, they’re also showcasing more of brewer Norm Penn’s house beers, from the Belgian Trippel to the famous “Coco Norm” porter. Trust someone who’s been blown away by Penn’s beer on a homebrew club bus trip: The guy can brew.

Wedge Brewing Company: Imagine sipping a stellar IPA by the train tracks surrounded by mountains and artist studios. Now throw in some metalwork and

bartenders who are potters by day. OK, open your eyes. This is Wedge Brewing, where the peanuts flow like water and every beer on tap is worth ordering. Can you catch a pigeon out front and bring it in for a free pint? I can’t answer that. But having to ask the question is a good thing.

Wicked Weed Brewing: Who knew that the newest brewery in Asheville

would be the first to have more than two-dozen of its own beers on tap? And not just any beers: Wicked Weed specializes in West Coast IPAs and fun(ky) Belgian beers. It’s currently the only place in town where there’s near-total certainty you can order an IPA, a sour, and a barrel-aged beer the same night (or day). The crowd can be considerable at times, but push your way to the downstairs bar. It’s worth it.

REgIOnAL

Brevard Brewing Company (Brevard): Even before Oskar Blues opened, brewer Kyle Williams gave Asheville beer fans a reason to visit Brevard — it’s the only local brewery focused on lagers. From “American Premium Lager” and Bohemian Pilsner to seasonals like Oktoberfest and Munich Dunkel, Brevard’s output is unique. Lagers may have a tarnished reputation thanks to macro-breweries, but Brevard makes a strong case for why it doesn’t have to be that way.

Catawba Valley Brewing Company (Morganton/Asheville location opening

’13): One of the oldest WNC breweries, Catawba Valley Brewing Company is also one of the most diverse. They’re the only brewery to put out what’s essentially a local PBR (Farmer Ted’s Cream Ale) and a Gose (a salted German wheat beer) in the same year. Until recently Catawba has been available only in cans or growlers, but the Asheville area will soon have access to at least as many beers as the Morganton tasting room. Location and opening date of the Asheville tasting room was still TBD at time of writing. Check Catawba Valley’s Facebook page or Mountain Xpress for up to date information.

Heinzelmännchen Brewery (Sylva): When I talked to the guy pouring

Heinzelmännchen’s Black Forest Stout at the Winter Warmer beer festival, I thought I was talking to an employee. Turns out, it was just one of Heinzelmännchen’s regulars who really loves the beer. That kind of fandom doesn’t come easy. But Heinzelmännchen seems to have no problem converting visitors; it hangs with much larger breweries in the Trip Advisor Top 10 Brewery Tour list.

Oskar Blues Brewery (Brevard): Like a good neighbor, Oskar Blues is there. From playing nice with nearby Brevard Brewing to co-brews with Asheville allies (most recently Asheville Pizza and Brewing), it’s clear that Oskar Blues is not bent on World Domination. Even better, its already sponsoring new local events and putting one-off cask and pilot system brews on tap down in Brevard. If you already like Oskar Blues, ride the trolley down there on Friday or Saturday. You just might love ‘em. Southern Appalachian Brewery (Hendersonville): Andy and Kelly Cubbin’s brewery has grown steadily since it opened. With ongoing Belgian beer experiments and a pilot system for brewing small-batch beers set to come online later this year, Southern Appalachian is increasingly worth the drive (and maybe even a hotel room for the night). For more information on area berweries, see the directory on pages 99-100.

Topsail: Chestnut’s bar program focuses on classics with character.

In recent years, cocktails have gone craft. You can still get your papa’s gin and tonic with well liquor and Schweppe’s, but you can also get one with smallbatch gin, house-made tonic and a creative twist. The trend benefits further from Asheville’s passionate local bartenders, who share resources and work together to keep pace with larger cities. Thanks in part to their fervor, most Asheville cocktail bars offer such dedicated touches as hand-cut ice and mixers made fresh with seasonal ingredients.

MG Road (p. 83) draws on the flavors of sister restaurant Chai Pani (p. 82), which serves Indian street food. The cocktails feature an array of spices, including cardamom, curry and cinnamon. But MG Road is more than a spin-off. The bartenders take their craft seriously, accenting their creations with airs, fresh herbs and house-made infusions. The focus of the bartenders is balanced by the lively atmosphere. Low light and high color create a fun, global eclectic feeling, and the Indian-inspired entrees and desserts complete the experience.

Equal parts Italian, small-plates restaurant and luxe cocktail bar, Cucina 24 (p. 83) offers nuanced cocktails that juggle a number a liquors and liqueurs.

The Pear Shrub Collins blends bourbon, applejack, lemon, house-made pear shrub, bitters and soda for a balance of bitter and sweet.

At the recently opened The Imperial Life (p. 100), cocktails and housecured charcuterie make for an evening of tastes to savor and consider. The bar uses barrel aging to meld and temper the flavors of well-knowncocktails, including the Negroni, Manhattan and Martinez. The second-floor lounge combines warm wood and old metal for a feel that’s chic and industrial. Most diners at Chestnut (p. 68) come for the modern American cuisine and the welcoming atmosphere, but even if you only want a drink, be sure to stop in. The bar program is small but centered. It focuses on classics with character. The La Belle Aurore tastes tempered and graceful with its fusion of Champagne, apricot nectar and thyme, whereas the Cerveza de Diablo is a fiery bigshot in tones of tequila, lemon, cayenne, mole bitters and stout.

ThE CAll oF ThE KETTlE TEA TIME IS AnyTIME

Infusioners: dobra Tea’s expansive menu captures the romance of the global tea trade.

A fancy wooden chest full of tea bags presented to you by your waiter is still just a box of tea bags. No worries, Asheville has plenty of cafés that steep the very best.

Dobrá Tea (p. 74) makes an experience of your steaming cup. Order tea with table service, and when it’s steeped, your server will bring it in a handmade vessel special to your drink. The menu book (seriously — it has a table of contents) includes green, white, black and Pu-er teas from every tea-growing region, as well as a selection of herbal infusions, mates, iced teas and even bubble tea. The staff acts as emissaries to this leafed realm, and although each tea has its own page with an accompanying story of origin, they can guide you to the brew that’s in between what you know and have yet to discover. If you’re into herbal teas (infusions, for purists), World Coffee (p. 75) has a wide selection of loose-leaf varieties (though the caffeinated kinds come mostly in bags). Many of the blends have been designed to produce desirable effects. This food writer has personally tested and confirmed the charismaboosting properties of the heart-opening blend. Skeptical? Try a cup. Head to Tod’s Tasties (p. 90) for tea and so much more. This cheerful little spot is a great place to have tea, in the English sense. In America, we call that a snack and a cup of tea. Either way, both snacks and tea shine at this cozy spot. The house-made chai latte is gingery and lightly sweetened, and there’s a variety of loose-leaf teas and maté to choose from. Snacks include poppy seed cookies and monkey bread, as well as more filling options. Unwind with something more potent than chamomile tea at Vanuatu Kava Bar (p. 75). The infusion of kava root powder promotes relaxation and, in some cases, mild euphoria. If you’re curious about the drink, the Kava Bar provides a comfortable, low-light lounge in which to try it for the first time. The staff are passionate about the “intoxicating pepper” and are happy to answer questions and guide visitors through their experience.

Recommended visit: Malaprop’s is one of Asheville’s longestrunning and much-lauded cafés. A cup of coffee means something different to everyone. For some, it’s a comforting morning ritual. For others, it’s a way to experience flavors from around the world. For others, it’s a mid-afternoon pick-me-up. No matter how you feel about coffee, Asheville has a cup for you.

Waking Life Espresso (p. 78) focuses on unlocking the intricacies of the bean. No drip coffee here; each cup comes as a pour-over, brewed by hand and precisely timed to produce rich, balanced flavors. Espresso benefits from similar calculations. Waking Life is the place to sip with other purists and learn more about coffee. For a neighborhood coffeehouse experience with quality brew, drink at

High-Five Coffee Bar (p. 78). The shop features bar stools, floor seating and

plenty of tables, inside and outside, so you can claim a spot and spend some time drinking the Counter Culture Coffee (from down the road in Durham). The atmosphere is inviting, and the menu features plenty of specialty drinks and snacks. A steaming cup of coffee or tea pairs perfectly with a book. Once you buy a book at Malaprop’s (p. 75) (a longtime Asheville institution and a recommended part of any visit to Asheville), take it over to the café and sip a ginger latte while you flip through your new purchase. The café isn’t just for book buyers, though; it’s also a great place to sit with a cup of tea and watch the action on downtown’s bustling Haywood Street.

Izzy’s (p. 78) is one of Asheville’s edgiest coffee shops. It serves Counter Culture brews with minimal fuss. It caters to a clientele that simply expects well-made coffee. Grab a cup while you stroll Lexington Avenue, or linger in Izzy’s lair and try the storied cranberry-habañero cream cheese on a bagel. If you enjoy creative specialty drinks that aren’t too heavy on sugar, seek out Ursa Minor (p. 80) coffee trailer. Most mornings, you’ll find it at The Lot on Coxe Avenue, where the food trucks congregate. Warm up with a Bombay Blast — cardamom, vanilla, espresso and steamed milk topped with crushed pistachios. For something refreshing, sip an Iced Qisher, a blend of tea, coffee berries, cinnamon and agave nectar. Just want drip coffee? Ursa Minor has that, too, with beans from Black Mountain’s Dynamite Roasting (p. 78).

BattleCat (p. 78) is east Haywood Road’s main hangout. The historic house has several rooms for lounging in large groups or making new friends, plus, there’s a wide covered porch and a front yard with picnic tables. The menu features coffee, tea, yerba maté and snacks, and in the back of the shop, Hank’s BBQ (p. 74) serves breakfasts of waffles and lunches and dinners of smoked meat, Texas-style. Get energized with the art crowd at Clingman Café (p. 78). The River Arts District coffeehouse neighbors the studio of Jonas Gerard, an acclaimed painter of abstracts and a familiar Asheville figure. After taking in the art, try one of the café’s many bagel sandwiches (named for some early RAD denizens) for breakfast or lunch, and enjoy a cup of Counter Culture coffee or a glass of beer or wine on the sunny patio.

Game on: Barley’s upstairs offers regulation-size pool tables, darts and one of Asheville’s most expansive draft-beer selections. Nothing solves a friendly dispute better than consuming alcohol while throwing sharp objects with (attempted) precision. That sounds ... irresponsible. Let’s try again. Drinking beer and playing darts ensures an engaging good time for all parties involved. Visit Barley’s Taproom & Pizzeria (p. 94) for pastimes both physical and intellectual. Play pool and darts in the sprawling, second-floor game room. On Wednesdays, search the recesses of your brain and employ the eccentricities of your friends in Dr. Brown’s Team Trivia. No need to feel nervous: Barley’s keeps more than 40 beers on tap help get you in the right frame of mind for competition. Cue up and chow down at West Asheville Lounge & Kitchen (p. 81, 98). The neighborhood hangout offers two pool tables, a full menu and bar. Don’t miss $1.50 taco Tuesdays. And there’s a projector-size TV that plays important sports events, should one happen to be on. Want to play pool with the pros? City Billiards (p. 96) offers a serious stick experience with professional-grade tables, plus a full bar featuring Asheville brews. The local league of pool players gathers here twice a week. Prefer the paddle? City Billiards has ping-pong, too. Right next door, Arcade Asheville (p. 94) offers a grown-up gaming experience. Remember skee-ball? The Arcade’s got it, along with other arcade games, Wii and vintage Nintendo. All this, and a menu featuring playful sandwiches and snacks, such as “machos.” For the uninitiated, that’s nachos, but with macaroni and cheese instead of chips. If you’re looking for a laid-back place to bring out your inner pinball wizard, check out Desoto Lounge (p. 96). It’s a hip honky-tonk that serves accessible, hand-held fare and quality drinks. Rootin’ good time: pack’s Tavern is a great place to watch sports.

A good sports bar is an arena in miniature: The sound is powerful. The images are clear. Fellow fans surround you. Everyone’s focused on the game. But at the bar, the food and beer are probably better than at the sports complex. Lucky you gets to watch the action in Asheville. For a large-capacity, high-anticipation sporting experience, hole up at

Pack’s Tavern (p. 70, 97). The historic Hayes and Hopson building right on

Pack Square lends the space a little ambiance without getting too hoity-toity. The tap list includes more than 30 beers to wet your whistle for your team, and the full menu of bar snacks, salads, burgers and steaks provides plenty of fuel for the fight. TVs are easy to find but not overwhelming.

Creekside Taphouse (p. 74) in Haw Creek provides a neighborhood game-day experience that’s cranked up by the copious ‘cue and a full bar. If the game gets too heated, step outside and enjoy the wide patio and the tranquil ripple of the nearby creek. Get a little rowdier at Scully’s (p. 70, 97) or Wild Wing Café (p. 72, 98). Both bars provide a boisterous atmosphere with plenty of TVs and solid, no frills snacks and sips. If footy’s what you want (soccer, that is), sidle up to a stool at Dirty Jack’s, Green Man Brewing’s (p. 99) tasting room. Green Man was one of Asheville’s first breweries, but Dirty Jack’s also has an established reputation as a soccer bar. Grab an ESB and watch the Champion’s League with fellow football enthusiasts.
