GUIDE TO the Area The wisdom of thousands is gathered in these pages. Locals, who know where to go and what to do in our region, cast more than 400,000 votes in this year’s survey — making this, as far as we know, Western North Carolina’s largest poll about who we are and what we value. With 500 categories on the ballot, the assembled winners provide a panoramic image of what’s best about WNC. Each year, Mountain Xpress commits hundreds of personhours to tally and judge the results. It’s a massive challenge because the ballot allows write-in entries, which give each voter maximum freedom of expression, but which also make the judges’ task more difficult: to make sure different spellings and ways of naming a business, place, person or idea are correctly aggregated. Last year, we encountered 44 ways to spell Malaprop’s Bookstore. And this year, we cataloged more than 60 different ways voters told us they wanted more greenways. To share some of the free-form feel of this year’s votes, we’ve added word-cloud graphics for some categories, such as Cheap Thrill and Thing Downtown Needs. Keep a sharp eye out for them as you leaf through this guide. This year’s Best of WNC poll digs deep. For example, it not only determines which is Asheville’s overall favorite restaurant, but it also divulges which is the best restaurant in each of Asheville’s six geographic regions. What’s more, the Best of WNC poll also focuses on what’s best about 14 towns surrounding Asheville. Be sure to check those results out in the Small Towns section. housands of voters made it clear who takes the cake this year. In so doing, they made it clear how important good food is for us: More people voted in the Eats section than any other. The most-voted category? Favorite Restaurant! What came in second? Best Breakfast. Those of you with a sweet tooth were most apt to vote for ... drum roll, please ... Best Ice Cream. Also wildly popular with voters were categories for best restaurant by region: downtown, west, north, south and east Asheville, and the River Arts District. Showing West Asheville’s chutzpah and probably owing to its ever-growing number of eateries, voting for Best Restaurant in that region was almost as heavy as for Best Restaurant in Downtown! What else can be deduced from voter responses? We seem to value a quick meal more than a romantic one. We may care more about a great loaf of bread than an outstanding cookie. A lot of us remember the name of at least one local cheesemaker. And where else but Asheville would the Healthiest Restaurant category attract more votes than Best Late Night Restaurant?

inning the title of Beer City USA was a coup for Asheville — but beer isn’t the only brew we do well. We revere craft beverages, both alcoholic and otherwise. This year, voting for the Best All-Round Coffee House category outpaced activity in all but one alcohol category (Best All-Round Brewery, the section’s most heavily voted category). And Best Place to Drink Tea wasn’t too far behind. Proving we’re a town of enthusiastic local-beer drinkers, Xpress readers told us they partake almost seven times a week, according to this year’s reader poll. Meanwhile, WNC’s 32 wineries and five cideries are stepping up the competition, as are local bars specializing in craft cocktails. With so many bartenders (760 working in the greater Asheville area, according to the U.S. Department of Labor), the Asheville Wine & Food Festival had to add two new events this year to accommodate the growing field of local mixologists. In the end, though, popularity doesn’t always hinge solely on production of a top-notch beverage. It’s worth noting that both this year’s Best Brewery (Highland Brewing Co.) and Best All-Round Coffee House (High Five Coffee) are legendary for not only their quality brews but also for their contributions to worthy causes and for being all-around nice people.

verwhelmingly, the reason to live in this area, according to our readers is, “The Mountains” — a pervasive attitude about the outdoors that cropped up in diverse sections of this year’s balloting. So what do we like best about the mountains? The most heavily voted Outdoors categories were Best Hiking Trail, Hike With A View and Outdoor Gear shop. See you on the trail! Besides hiking, there is so much else voters love to do outdoors: camp, bike, zip and paddle — in descending order based on voting activity. We love to take our kids to the North Carolina Arboretum (voted Best Nature Camp and tied for Best Outdoor Activity Spot); we take our dogs on the hikes (Brother Wolf Outward Hounds voted second best Hiking Club); and we take our visiting friends to the Blue Ridge Parkway (Best Local Attraction Outside Of Asheville). We also want our local governments to build more greenways, sidewalks and bike lanes. It seems like there isn’t much around here that remains unaffected by proximity to mountainous paradise. People come and go, we make our changes, make a fuss and, ultimately, move on. But the mountains and outdoors remain. May they touch our souls. Changing times and old favorites: Welcome Hall of Fame newcomer Navitat Canopy Adventures (Canopy/Zip-Line Tour). And congratulations to Nantahala Outdoor Center for its three first-place wins (Paddle/Kayak/Rafting Equipment Company; Whitewater Trekking/Guide Service; and Outdoor/Adventure Instruction Programs).

hat’s most on our shopping minds? Groceries! According to the votes, our passions peak when we shop for food. Hometown-based favorite Ingles won Best All-Round Grocery Store with their stores’ broad geographical reach and range of products, including local produce and organic selections. Earth Fare (also hometown-based: Old-timers will remember when it was called Dinner for the Earth and was located on Broadway) won Best Health Food Store. And ALDI, with its strategy of offering limited selection at low prices, scored top marks for Budget Friendly Grocery Store. In an odd pairing, after food, Best of WNC voters care most about shopping for shoes and books. And among the different clothing categories, voting was strongest for Women’s Dress-Up/ Stylin’ Clothes and Consignment/Vintage — leaving Men’s Dress-Up/ Stylin’ in the dust (come on, fellas!). In an effort to compare our passions with our pocketbooks, we also asked readers what they spend on groceries (about $588/ month), for household goods, cooking equipment and furniture (about $64/ month) and for clothing and shoes (about $59/month). sheville is a town in flux, a revolving door of tourists, business startups and morphing band names, not to mention the in-pouring of breweries, hotels and creative types. Asheville remains a moving target. If there were a top-10 list for Cities in Constant Change, we’d be on it. But through all the flux, the best persist: Three-quarters of the winners in this year’s Arts & Entertainment categories won last year as well! And among the coveted four-time-winner category — the Hall of Fame — welcome two newcomers: Sirius B (Favorite AllRound Band); and The Admiral (Place to Dance). The Asheville area today is thick with art and artists. Mountain Xpress readers love local arts and crafts. About 75 percent use locally made jewelry, pottery, furniture or other craft products in their daily lives. But we didn’t get this way overnight. Our arts-destination status dates back more than 100 years. The construction of the Biltmore Estate, begun in 1889, created a village of artisans during the mansion’s six-year construction period. The Grove Park Inn, which opened in 1913, also employed a legion of artists and laborers. The 1920s saw the establishment of Penland School of Crafts, John C. Campbell Folk School and the Southern Highland Craft Guild — all of which promoted Appalachian crafts. And starting in the 1930s and continuing into the ’50s, Black Mountain College helped develop the area’s avant-garde reputation. And we love music and dance. We contra dance, salsa, tango and jitterbug most nights of the week and are entertained by street performers on almost every downtown corner. Xpress readers attend about 1.5 live concerts per month. Maybe there’s a correlation between this free-thinking, uncontainable arts-loving community and our two favorite slogans: “Keep Asheville Weird” and “Cesspool of Sin.”

After all, 45 percent of Xpress readers have one or more piercings/tattoos. “We might as well make it the tattoo and piercing capital of the world,” declared Daron Jones, a producer of our annual Asheville Tattoo Fest. press readers’ enthusiasm for all things kidrelated is highlighted in this year’s Best of WNC kids categories. A significant number of readers have kids in the equation. Just under one-third (32 percent) of Xpress readers have children living in their home, with another 8 percent planning on having a child in the upcoming 18 months. Add in another 21 percent of our readers as parents of adult children who identify themselves as empty nesters. Kids are natural learners, and the importance of children’s education looms large for Xpress readers, who cast the largest number of votes in the categories for After-School Program, Preschool and School (Pre-College). The YMCA, YWCA and Asheville Jewish Community Center returned to take honors for their after-school programs, with ArtSpace Charter School joining that stellar list this year. Preschool programs that won readers’ hearts this year include 2014 winners St. Paul’s Preschool, Rainbow Community School and Asheville Jewish Community Center, plus Asheville Montessori School.

e love our animal companions, whatever their species. And based on the heavy voting for Best Animal Shelter/ Rescue category, we really love the folks who rescue them. Most Xpress readers (77 percent) have one or more pets, according to the last two years’ Xpress reader polls. Household pet-care spending has a considerable economic impact on the area, with readers spending, on average, $1,400 per year. Should we be surprised, then, that veterinarian is one of the few occupations in the (notoriously low-wage) Asheville-area that earns a higher wage than the state average, according to the U.S. Department of Labor? The survey’s most frequent write-in statement of disbelief (“You’ve got to be kidding”) goes to Best Animal Acupuncturist (won this year by Andrea Fochios). Yes, this is a real and valid career path if you live in or around Asheville. It should be no real shocker; we demand the same services for our pets as we expect for ourselves and, as LaZoom’s Augusta Wind opined: “You can’t swing a dead cat in Asheville without hitting an acupuncturist.” That apparently includes ones helping four-leggers. Welcome these two newcomers to the Hall of Fame categories: the Universal Joint for Pet- Friendly Restaurant and The Bywater for Pet-Friendly Bar.

e are here. We are weird. Get used to it. This town is constantly evolving, but the flavor always seems familiar, as if we are trying to strike the perfect balance of revolution and perpetual communitarianism. It seems to be working. Once again, West Asheville reigns supreme, retaining its title to Best Neighborhood — in the section’s hardest-fought race, despite valiant efforts mounted by voters favoring other areas. In the no-small-feat department: Despite a name change early this year, Mountain True (formerly WNC Alliance) retained its title as Best Activist Group, although this year the group has to share the crown with Brother Wolf Animal Shelter in a tie for first place. In an amazing showing of ongoing popularity and notoriety, City Councilman Cecil Bothwell managed to repeat his win for both Best Politician and Best Hero — and place third as Local Villain. This year, voters had their wallets in mind as they filled out their ballots. Brand-new in Thing Asheville Needs, “affordable housing” swept onto the scene, placing in the top three for every region of town. Cynical voters carried the day, setting an ominous tone for local 2015 elections, writing in “None” for both Asheville and Buncombe Government Accomplishments, after giving a laudatory first-place win in 2014 to “Greenways” as best Local Government Accomplishment. But then, this year, the ballot judges allowed votes like “haha” and “lolz” to count as “none.” Last, a newcomer’s welcome goes to Biltmore Estate (Place To Take Your Visiting Family), which joined the ranks of the section’s eight Hall of Fame winners.

estern North Carolina has long been — for a really, really long time — a place to heal and regenerate. And while the term “wellness tourism” might be new, the concept goes back more than a century. A 1912 bulletin from the local health department demanded that the sick visiting Asheville conduct themselves so as not to become a menace to the locals. Before the 1700s, Cherokee Indians considered nearby Hot Springs a healing place. By the late 1800s, tuberculosis patients were renting rooms in Asheville boarding houses and “taking the cure” on porches in hopes of regaining their health. And more recently, Asheville has become not only WNC’s medical hub for conventional medicine, but also a mecca for alternative practices. You’ll even find a handful of animal acupuncturists for our ailing pets. WNC is home to an impressive variety of services, whether you come to attune your galactic Earth coordinates with the synchronicities of your soul signature, to breathe the “clean” mountain air (unless it’s a Code Yellow Day), or to take advantage of the ever-expanding conventional, award-winning medical infrastructure. So how does one go about choosing a practitioner if you are visiting or new in town? round here, most people have heard the story of the Asheville transplant who moves here to be a professional kayaker (or painter or busker or writer or farmer) and finds it isn’t so easy. Maybe it is true that most Ashevilleans have not yet realized their dream jobs, since only about 15 percent of voters in this year’s reader poll bothered to vote for Best Place To Work. Sigh. Yes, it can be hard to make enough money around here, where costs are rising faster than wages. And yet, we all have stories of outlandish local entrepreneurs who have managed to make a decent living in Asheville by building on an outrageous idea. Is this living the Asheville dream? Asheville is home to the creative and the innovative when it comes to business. The Asheville metropolitan statistical area is dense in small businesses: We rank 56th in the country by percentage of businesses employing under 20 people, 70th by percentage of people employed in those tiny businesses; but we rank 117th by overall population. And our unemployment rate is lower than the national average. Let it be said: Asheville supports cool ideas. According to Kickstarter stats, Asheville projects outcompete Kickstarter’s overall average. Additionally, we have several incubator and support programs for businesses getting off the ground or expanding (this year’s winner of Best Support Organization For New Businesses is Mountain BizWorks). This is the kind of place where creativity and raw gumption are rewarded and, year after year, we see new businesses joining the ranks of the established successes. Four cheers for Integrative Medicine, clearly seen by our voters as a place moving in a lot of right directions; they came first in four categories! But what about those five-out-of-six voters who didn’t vote for Best Place To Work? Should we add a category “OK-enough place to work?” or “Occupation that offers a reasonable return on investment for limited time/talent/skills”?

armers could be considered a type of Asheville artist. They pay an enormous price to work their butts off at an occupation with huge risks and low payoff. And if they could live their lives all over again, most of them wouldn’t change a thing. The people of WNC support our local farmers — all 16,328 of them (according to U.S. Census figures). Our direct food sales (read locally grown food) rose 70 percent between 2007 and 2012. No wonder the Tailgate/Farmers Market category garnered the most votes in the Best of WNC Farm & Garden section. The average Xpress reader shops at a tailgate/farmers market 1.6 times per month. Not only that, readers make a point of purchasing locally grown items more than five times per month. No wonder seemingly every restaurant in Asheville says it serves locally grown food.
