What’s Asheville’s secret recipe for success as a food and beverage city? Topping national lists has become routine for Asheville in recent years, but it was still exciting when readers of Southern Living magazine named our little mountain town one of the South’s 10 best food cities for 2019. ABOUT THE COVER Old World Levain (OWL) Bakery’s Nancy Hughes made this summer fruit tart with tulsi basil pastry cream and a buttery pâte sucrée crust, garnishing it with fresh herbs from the shop’s garden. OWL focuses on the integrity of its ingredients, using organic flours from locally milled grains, grass-fed milk and local fruit at the peak of ripeness. “Our pastries are simple and also serve as a canvas for us to explore the flavors and expressions of this place and each season,” says co-owner Susannah Gebhart. BY EDWIN ARNAUDIN In a September 2018 interview with Xpress, singer-songwriter and frequent Asheville visitor Jason Isbell described the city as “the brunch capital of the South.” The label comes courtesy of such staples as Sunny Point Café, Biscuit Head and Early Girl Eatery — each of which merits the long waits on any given weekend for their respective breakfasts and brunches. However, other less busy spots around Asheville are just as deserving of patronage. • In its ongoing quest to be known for more than high-quality seafood (and its Moonstone Oyster Stout), Oyster House Brewing Co. has added a weekend brunch menu. Along with new omelet, French toast, eggs Benedict and seafood with grits specials each Saturday and Sunday, such items as a breakfast bowl and angel biscuits with gravy (vegetarian option included) pair nicely with the house bloody mary and wide selection of beers.

• One of Asheville’s longtime vegetarian staples, Laughing Seed Café earns steady business for its Seed Burger, Harmony Bowl and jalapeño onion fries, but its Sunday brunch (11 a.m.-3 p.m.) is likewise worthy of attention. In addition to the balanced sugary delights of sweet potato pancakes and cinnamon buns is a “crab” cake Benedict (made with jackfruit) and “chicken” and waffle sandwich (with crispy, fried seitan). • The West Asheville alternative to its Haywood Avenue neighbors’ lengthy lines, West End Bakery offers an array of breakfast sandwiches served on a choice of house-made bagel, biscuit or fresh-baked bread throughout the week. When Saturday rolls around, so does a brunch menu of revolving specials, including challah French toast with seasonal fruit, organic grits with butter or pimento cheese and fresh fruit salad with organic vanilla yogurt and housemade granola. • So on the main stretch that it’s practically hidden in plain sight, 67 Biltmore’s made-to-order menu ranges from a build-your-own omelet to the veggie-filled Forager Quinoa Bowl. Meanwhile, the deli counter features breakfast burritos — for vegetarians and carnivores — that are reheatable inhouse or at home, complemented by a side of fruit.

BY ABLE ALLEN In Asheville, they still roll up the streets after midnight if it’s not the weekend, so it can be tough to properly fulfill the needs of hungry partiers or service workers coming off their shift. But the offerings are growing more numerous all the time, and this guide displays an icon by each business listing that offers late-night bites anytime during the week. Here are some options for weeknights. • Look for the crowd of smokers out front to find two downtown bars with late-night food menus. Asheville Yacht Club prepares Polynesian- and Caribbean-influenced cuisine that’s still clearly from the South. Meanwhile, the Rankin Vault offers the right burger with the right beer and perfectly crispy tater-tots as well as other sandwiches and sides to surprise. • Just off the beaten path on Church Street, Foggy Mountain Brew Pub puts real pub grub on the table till last call, just as the pub gods intended. And down on South Slope, Ben’s Tune Up serves sake that’s brewed in-house, as well as Asian fusion bar food. You can’t miss the big red sign inside that proudly offers “Food till 2 a.m.” • Three other downtown eateries push the gourmet envelope into the night. After a show at The Orange Peel, folks have been known to find tasty farm-to-table grub at Storm Rhum Bar.

And as the moon rises, the upscale eateries and bars Sovereign Remedies and AUX Bar become service industry hangouts. • While out west, one can also get divey and hit up Desoto Lounge for some late-night bar grub, or get into the old-school West Asheville vibe with a stop-off at the absolutely classic Westville Pub. • Headed east? Looking for something better than fast food for your fourth meal? The Social in Oteen is the oasis in the nighttime desert, a neighborhood sports bar with a full food menu and after-hours amenities. • If one is well situated but the hunger beast is growling, a brand new option is Night Owl Eats, which delivers sandwiches, salads, desserts and ever-changing specials to businesses and homes. No early birds allowed, though — it operates 11 p.m.3 a.m nightly. • WORLD

• Asheville’s taco scene rivals that of cities twice its size, with spots like White Duck Taco Shop, which offers an eclectic take on the traditional tacos, with varieties including Thai peanut chicken, banh mi tofu and lump crab. Just north of downtown on Charlotte Street, Taco Temple was awarded second place for Best Quick Meal from Xpress readers in 2018 for its handmade corn tortillas filled with chicken, chili verde, beef, carnitas, carne asada, veggies or a wide assortment of seafood options, including calamari, crab cakes and Alaskan cod.

We’ve got plenty of other beverages brewing, too — both hot and cold. • High Five Coffee was voted No. 1 coffeehouse in the 2018 Best of WNC. Thanks to its partnership with Counter Culture Coffee, which handles the company’s sourcing, roasting and education, the cafe was also recognized by voters as the establishment with the best coffee. With three sites to choose from, coffee seekers can get their beverage of choice in their location of choice — downtown, the Five Points neighborhood or alongside the French Broad River. • Like High Five, PennyCup Coffee Co. also has established itself throughout the city. With four locations, the small-batch roaster can be found in the River Arts District, East Asheville, downtown and its recently opened outpost on Merrimon Avenue in North Asheville. • But where to go if you’re in South Asheville? Fortunately, Biltmore Coffee Roasters has you covered. Along with traditional café options, the Hendersonville Road location also serves unique and healthy signature drinks, as well as organic chai, loose-leaf teas and herbal smoothies. • Speaking of tea, for those who prefer cured leaves over coffee beans, the go-to option in Asheville is Dobrá Tea. With locations in downtown and West Asheville, the two venues offer an array of tea types, including green, white, oolong, black, pu-erh, herbal and iced.

• If you’re seeking the colder side of life, Elements Real Food in North Asheville has cold-pressed juice, smoothies and nut milks made from organic, locally sourced ingredients as well as a menu of plant-based foods and raw desserts. • In a similar vein, Green Sage Cafe also offers an assortment of fresh-pressed juices, smoothies, coffee and tea, along with a full menu of breakfast bowls, brunch plates, wraps and more. The café recently opened its fourth location on Merrimon Avenue, which features additional menu options designed in partnership with Plant founder and chef Jason Sellers. • Meanwhile, over in East Asheville, Peaberry Press has fresh fruit smoothies and coffee. Menu options include classical options like strawberry banana and pina colada, as well as unique flavors such as PBJ.

BY EDWIN ARNAUDIN A handful of years after national players Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., New Belgium Brewing Co. and Oskar Blues Brewery brought their East Coast operations to the Asheville area, homegrown breweries are increasing their own footprints. Whether expanding to additional locations within the region and beyond or just crossing the one-year mark, local craft beverage makers continue to grow the industry’s already revered reputation. • With its South Slope brewery a hot spot since 2013 and its Big Top facility in Biltmore Village a steady draw since 2015, HiWire Brewing brought its range of lagers, ales and sours to its Durham taproom in 2018 and will add a Knoxville, Tenn., taproom in 2019. • UpCountry Brewing Co. had been in the former Altamont Brewing Co. space in West Asheville just shy of two years when the space that housed Brevard’s Peaks & Creeks Brewing Co. became available in November. While the original location continues to produce a diverse portfolio of flagship and experimental offerings, the Transylvania County taproom will soon house a sour and wild ale fermentation brewery. • Likewise appreciative of a gone but not forgotten brewery’s history, Archetype Brewing Co. moved into the former Habitat Brewing Co. building on Broadway in March. The brewery’s American and Belgian-style beers will still be crafted at its West Asheville spot, but the downtown location will house bottle conditioning and an expansion of Archetype’s

barrel-aging operation, with future plans for a pilot brewery and a sour program. • Daidala Ciders still makes its small-batch ciders nomadically, but now has a taproom home on the second floor of the Historic Cotton Mill Studios in the River Arts District. The intimate space is shared with the Andy Herod Gallery and features clear views of the French Broad River rolling past. • Within shouting distance of the South Slope for just over a year, Eurisko Beer Co. offers a relaxing atmosphere and exceptional takes on traditional beer styles inside its Short Coxe Avenue taproom. Even more tucked away, down Thompson Street along the banks of the Swannanoa River in a rejuvenated tractor-trailer repair shop, is Brouwerïj Cursus Kĕmē. Launched in 2018, its creative takes on a wide variety of styles can be enjoyed within its spacious interior or generous outdoor area.

Beer brewing, cidermaking, winemaking and distilling aren’t the only craft beverage industries in Western North Carolina. Several businesses, such as Bee & Bramble, Fox Hill Meadery and Alchemy Herbal Wine produce mead, also known as honey wine. Fun And South Slope ramen restaurant Ben’s Fact Tune-Up is one of the nation’s few producers of artisan sake, or Japanese rice wine.

BY THOMAS CALDER When it comes to Asheville’s dessert scene, it can sometimes feel as if we’re living in a citywide version of Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. From ice cream to doughnuts, from pies to macarons, the options seem limitless, making a single choice nearly impossible. Because of this, there’s often that brief moment where the sugar fiend inside you wonders: Why not have it all? But then you remember Augustus Gloop, the poor lad in Willie Wonka who nearly drowns while overindulging in the factory’s chocolate river. No, no, no — you mustn’t pull a Gloop! Let’s stay classy, Asheville. Let us drink our milkshakes, not swim in them. • And what better place to grab a milkshake than at The Hop Ice Cream Café in North Asheville or its West Asheville location. Voted best ice cream in the 2018 Best of WNC, both stores offer a rotating menu of homemade treats, as well as specialty ice cream cakes and cold and warm drinks. • Of course, as you exit The Hop Ice Cream Cafe on Merrimon Avenue, you might be tempted to stop in next door at A La Mode Macaron. The eatery has an ever-changing rotation of flavors, including vegan options. Menu highlights include macaron ice cream sandwiches, macaron lollipops and macaron cupcakes.

• Pie fans can get their fill at Baked Pie Co., which has locations in North and South Asheville. Blueberry crumb, honey pecan, chocolate chip cookie and Hawaiian pineapple are just a few of the many flavors pie-seekers can expect to find. • For those craving a unique doughnut experience, head west to Hole Doughnuts. These made-to-order goods were voted best dessert of 2016 by Bon Appetit. Menu staples include vanilla glazed, toasted almond, sesame cinnamon and cinnamon sugar. Seasonal flavors are also available. • Then there’s Sugar & Snow Gelato in South Asheville. Along with its four signature flavors —raspberry sorbet, mint chip, creamy chocolate, and cookies and cream — guests can anticipate an ever-changing menu of options. Smoothies, trail mix cookies and additional treats are also up for grabs. • Lastly, there is the French Broad Chocolate Factory, which is about as close as Asheville gets to Willie Wonka’s operation. Established in 2008, the business has a number of locations, including its downtown lounge and boutique, in addition to the brand-new factory on the northern edge of the River Arts District. Daily tours of the factory are available, and those with self-control issues need not worry — as far as we know, the facility does not have a chocolate river.

Fortunately, many of the city’s chefs have reliably looked out for customers with allergies and other dietary concerns and keep the local restaurant industry one of the most inviting and diverse in the nation. • True to its name, Simple Cafe & Juice Bar in West Asheville uses straightforward, easily identifiable ingredients in its fruitbased beverages as well as salads, sandwiches and breakfast items. Such a commitment makes it a trustworthy, allergensafe haven, and the delightful ambiance and aesthetic further its appeal. • While ginger beers have popped up at other breweries, Ginger’s Revenge remains the leader in creativity and quantity when it comes to this branch of gluten-free alcoholic beverages. Supplementing its dependable house offerings are new small-batch brews each Sunday and mixology options that combine ginger beer and cocktail flavors. • Whether attracting former President Bill Clinton to order takeout or working with Amy’s Kitchen to get nondairy ice cream in grocery stores across the country, Plant remains a beacon for those with vegan and gluten-free diets. The kitchen’s imaginative, flavorful takes on seasonal vegetable dishes are enough to make many longtime carnivores forget that they’re missing meat in their meal. • Smack in the middle of downtown on Pack Square, Posana keeps attracting new and returning patrons with its wholly

gluten-free menu of American cuisine made with local, seasonal, farm-to-table ingredients. • Though Sunny Point Café is famous for its traditional dishes containing gluten, dairy and other potential allergens, its staff has become renowned for its helpfulness in suggesting substitutions and working with diner restrictions. Its fellow famous breakfast/brunch peer Early Girl Eatery recently added gluten-free fried chicken and is going completely peanut-free. • With its menu of self-professed “real, feel-good food,” BimBeriBon provides plenty of dairy-free and gluten-free fare. From allergen-free desserts and baked goods to the raspberry rose coconut superfood latte and bowl of Sunshine Broth that accurately reflects its celestial namesake, the West Asheville eatery makes for a terrific “alternative” coffee and pastry morning spot.

Jump in the car and get ready to take the scenic route to some of the area’s culinary delights. • Like sweet tea and summertime, some things are just a match made in heaven. For HenDough Chicken & Donuts, located in Hendersonville and named after the city, that match is crispy fried chicken and house-made doughnuts. Can’t decide? HenDough offers both menu items in its doughnut breakfast sandwich, which features a glazed doughnut, American cheese and bacon or sausage for the perfect balance of sweet and savory. • Just a short drive from the hustle and bustle of downtown Asheville lies Black Mountain Cider & Mead, which specializes in small-batch hard apple cider and mead, a fermented honey wine. The cidery uses locally sourced heirloom apples that are house-pressed without added sugars or flavors to create traditional, country-style beverages. • Just a few minutes northwest of Asheville in Leicester is where daytrippers will find 55 acres of rolling hills and farmland at Addison Farms Vineyard. The winery, located on a farm that

has been passed down through four generations, earned three silver awards at the Asheville International Wine Competition in 2017. Tours and tastings are available with optional local cheese and charcuterie pairings. • Just over an hour’s drive southwest from Asheville, the valleys and mountains of Sapphire provide a rustic backdrop for a high-end dining experience at Canyon Kitchen. Open May through October, the restaurant uses fresh, farm-to-table ingredients curated by chef Ken Naron to create upscale American fare that can be enjoyed in the open-air dining room with sweeping views of nearby granite-face mountains. • Any exploration of the quirky Madison County mountain town of Marshall merits a stop at the Marshall Container Co. Equal parts neighborhood bar and working ceramics studio, the sunny space offers light snack fare along with craft beer and cider.

Artisan cheesemaking is a growing industry in Western North Carolina. The WNC Cheese Trail provides maps and information for exploring area farms and creameries. Although Asheville’s vibe has always been somewhat young at heart, increasingly, the city’s restaurants, coffee shops and cafés are designing menus and spaces with the youngest customers in mind. • A short stroll past downtown Asheville’s landmark statue of a giant iron to the quiet end of Wall Street leads to a hidden paradise of food and old-fashioned fun at Well Played Board Game Café. Its library of more than 600 board games stocks everything from Hungry Hungry Hippos to Settlers of Catan with staff game masters on hand to offer guidance. A full menu of coffee, sandwiches, snacks and desserts — not to mention beer, wine and cider for the grown-ups — will keep the whole family fueled for board game battle. • In West Asheville, Fractals Coffee Shop beckons to your inner nerd with an interactive museum featuring robots, virtual reality equipment, a giant chess set, a real polygraph machine — even actual light sabers and a life-sized TARDIS. But, as the name indicates, Fractals is also a coffee bar with a menu of sandwiches and sweets that includes gluten-free and vegan options. • For a tasty lesson on Japanese culture, parents will want to check out WakuWaku Eatery in North Asheville. The casual Japanese homestyle restaurant hosts regular all-ages workshops on Japanese language, music and art, and a $5 choose-your-

own-meal option for ages 4-12 (free for younger children), makes it an inexpensive family dining adventure. • On the east side of town, Black Bear BBQ provides a spacious, welcoming atmosphere for families with its bright murals featuring the restaurant’s mascot, Baxter the Bear, plus a generous stock of games and toys. (The ample free parking may be particularly enticing to parents weary of downtown traffic.) The menu of traditional barbecue dishes and housemade sides is accented with vegetarian options and inventive, chef-driven daily specials. • In historic Biltmore Village, The Cantina offers a sizable menu of freshly made, kid-friendly, Mexican-style favorites, and on Tuesdays, ages 12 and younger eat free. Parents who are ready to unwind with a cocktail can simultaneously take advantage of the Tuesday half-off special on selections from The Cantina’s extensive tequila menu.

Western North Carolina boasts an impressive and ever-growing number of vineyards, wineries and distilleries, and the city is home to a profusion of craft cocktail and wine bars offering experiences ranging from adventurous to sophisticated. • Any good downtown bar crawl should include a stop at The Imperial Life. Hidden upstairs from Table restaurant, the space offers an excellent selection of house-made charcuterie and snacks to accompany its impressive menu of handcrafted drinks. • Save Me the Waltz is another downtown bar known for bites as well as beverages, and it offers live jazz to boot. The constantly changing food menu features everything from snacks like smoked gouda gougeres to heartier dishes like lobster roll with house-made brioche. The cocktail menu, created by bartender and owner Chris Faber, specializes in familiar classics presented in intriguing ways. • Also downtown, the quirky, anachronistic Crow & Quill focuses strictly on drinks. Its collection of more than 800 spirits includes one of the area’s largest selections of whiskeys. • It’s no surprise that Southern Living readers voted Thirsty Monk one of the South’s 10 best bars for 2019. For years, the Monk has gained a loyal following with its original downtown taproom and rooftop Top of the Monk cocktail bar, and now its latest addition, Monk’s Flask, brings a menu of classic and modern craft cocktails, beer, an extensive wine list and food to Biltmore Park. Bite option, which combines a 5-ounce beer pour, a shot of liquor and a house-made snack. • One of the most eye-catching new additions to Asheville’s fast-growing South Slope is the Antidote cocktail bar, next door to Chemist distillery. Designed to channel a Prohibition-era apothecary, the space invites exploration with a view of Chemist’s distilling operations, intimate, lamp-lit nooks and captivating collections of antique flasks and laboratory equipment. • Although Asheville boasts a number of wonderful wine bars, it so far has only one urban winery — plēb. With a focus on supporting local agriculture and viticulture, plēb purchases tons of grapes each year from WNC farms to produce its small-batch wines, which it kegs rather than bottles with an eye toward sustainability. Its large, comfortable River Arts District wine bar features 16 local and national wines on tap, by the glass or flight.

RISING STARS YOUNG CHEFS CRAFT THE FUTURE OF ASHEVILLE’S FOOD SCENE

BY GINA SMITH For a small city with an emerging restaurant scene, Asheville already has more than its fair share of culinary celebrities, including James Beard Foundation favorites like Meherwan Irani and Katie Button. But forward-thinking food lovers are keeping tabs on the city’s current crop of inventive young chefs who are driving Foodtopia toward a future of greater diversity, awareness and sustainability. • After staging at Blue Hills at Stone Barns in upstate New York and a stint at Vivian Howard’s Chef & the Farmer in Kinston, Ashleigh Shanti moved to Asheville in 2018 to help James Beard Award nominee John Fleer open Benne on Eagle. She serves as chef de cuisine, working with Fleer and local soul food legend Hanan Shabazz to celebrate the rich African American heritage of the area of downtown historically known as The Block. In 2019, she was tapped as an Eater Young Gun, a prestigious national honor bestowed on just a handful of young chefs each year. • Rakim Gaines has achieved a high position — literally — in Asheville’s food scene as executive chef at the AC Hotel Downtown Asheville’s rooftop restaurant, Capella on 9. But he’s paid his culinary dues. The Asheville native worked his way up the ranks from line cook to sous chef at The Lobster Trap and later Corner Kitchen, before helping to open Capella on 9, where he dreams up creative daily specials and oversees its seasonally rotating tapas-style menu.

• If pie piques your interest, check out the sweet work of Buxton Hall Barbecue pastry chef Ashley Capps. Like Gaines, she got her training in Asheville’s A-B Tech culinary program, then took her love of baking to posts as far afield as Five & Ten in Athens, Ga., and Eleven Madison Park in New York before returning to Asheville. She was a 2019 semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation’s Best Pastry Chef award. • Western North Carolina native Kenny Blalock learned the basics of cooking from his grandmother but is otherwise a self-taught chef. He worked in kitchens in Florida and Georgia before partnering with executive chef Adam Bannasch in his current role of chef de cuisine at East Asheville’s Copper Crown. In crafting the restaurant’s ever-changing, seasonal small-plates menu, he works closely with bar manager Tim Walker to streamline ingredient use and limit food waste. • Downtown Asheville’s Twisted Laurel recently underwent a major makeover, changing its name to Daphne at Twisted Laurel and swapping out its original Mediterranean menu for a locally focused, farm-to-table concept. Part of that shift involved bringing onboard executive chef Michael Achberger, previously of Jacob Sessoms’ restaurant, Table. Under Achberger’s leadership, Daphne now offers items such as smoked trout fritters, bavette steak tartare, pork crepinette and grilled tempeh.

Today, Pritchard Park is home to the drum circle, outdoor markets, live bands and plenty more. But from 1892 to 1932, the city’s post office occupied the site. On March 12, 1931, a year before it was razed, Fun the city’s park commission resolved to Fact name the future park in honor of Jeter C. Pritchard, a North Carolina judge and senator.
