Better than ever Without a doubt, the first few years of the 2020s are a rough ride for the nation’s hospitality sector, and Asheville’s Foodtopia is no exception. The National Restaurant Association’s 2022 State of the Restaurant Industry report offers a somewhat sunny forecast of growth, but staffing shortages, supply chain breakdowns, rising food costs and other factors continue to make the industry’s road to pandemic recovery a rocky one. Yet strolling along downtown Asheville’s restaurant-lined streets or driving down West Asheville’s busy Haywood Road corridor, what one observes through café windows and at bustling outdoor tables is activity and expansion, not struggle and scarcity. In characteristically tough mountain fashion, Asheville’s community of resilient, innovative restaurateurs and bar owners is steadily going about the business of turning its seemingly endless supply of pandemic lemons into lemonade — probably sweetened with local honey and accented with herbs from nearby farms. Many savvy chefs and owners are building on their COVID-19 pivots to reimagine and reinvigorate their business models for the future, in turn providing Asheville diners with exciting new outdoor dining spaces, streamlined service models, a wealth of delicious takeout options and more. Additionally, while a scant handful of Asheville restaurants closed in the past two years, countless fresh concepts have opened and more are sprouting up every day. BY K AY WEST In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when indoor dining and drinking were prohibited, there was hardly a restaurant, café, coffeehouse, bakery, sandwich shop or burger joint that didn’t turn closed doors into open takeout windows. Even now, with outdoor seating expanded and in-house dining resumed, Asheville has takeout meal options that meet you wherever you are. • Chai Pani chef and owner Meherwan Irani opened Nani’s Piri Piri Chicken in 2020 as a takeout-only concept predicated on the simple idea of tweaking the ubiquitous rotisserie chicken into the ultimate rotisserie chicken. Nominated for the James Beard Foundation’s Best New Restaurant award in February, Nani’s also features chicken sandwiches, salads and a rotating repertoire of flavorful sides such as housemade piri piri chips, dirty rice and potato salad made with chicken fat confit and applewood-smoked bacon. • Turn your culinary compass from India to the Middle East with a short walk from Nani’s to Baba Nahm, where two classically trained chefs offer a delectable menu of healthy Mediterranean street food like shawarma, dolmas, falafel and bourekas. Bonus points for the in-house bake shop that cranks out gluten-free pita, baklava and vegan tahini cookies. • Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack likes to boast that it’s been giving Asheville the bird since 2009, and indeed its menu of

fiery fowl has built a fervent following who flock to its two locations. When the pandemic temporarily closed the doors, owner Rich Cundiff went all in on takeout, constructing two dedicated parking lot huts to serve folks who want to feel the burn in the comfort of their own homes. • Vinnie’s Neighborhood Italian has enjoyed a robust to-go business since it opened in North Asheville in 2010, so staff members barely broke a sweat during the pandemic when takeout was all they could do. Now, the original Vinnie’s and Vinnie’s South, which launched in 2021, still maintain sections in their kitchens for packing up everything from linguini and clams for one to heat-and-eat pans of pasta to feed a crowd. • The menus and service models at high-end restaurants don’t always translate well to takeout, and Asheville’s best-known dining destination, Cúrate, is no exception. In 2020, chef Katie Button and her husband, Felix Meana, flipped the script on their downtown space that had previously housed Button & Co. Bagels, transforming it into La Bodega by Cúrate, a meal pickup destination specializing in the Spanish cuisine Cúrate is acclaimed for. Since then, La Bodega has expanded to also include an all-day café, wine bar and specialty market. • Pizza practically invented takeout and delivery, and Asheville has multiple options to get pie on the fly. Go big — really big — with Pie.Zaa, home of the 28-inch pie and 15-inch-long slice. 828 Family Pizzeria began tossing dough in New York in 1933, and that wealth of experience has repeatedly earned the restaurant Best Pizza honors in Xpress’ annual Best of WNC awards. Neck and neck with 828 in reader polls is Asheville Pizza & Brewing Co., a combo that’s hard to beat. • Sandwiches are the perfect travel food — portable and no utensils required. A line that snakes from its sidewalk window down Haywood Road is a testament to Asheville Sandwich Co.’s popularity. You may fondly remember your mama’s tuna sandwich, but Mother Ocean Seafood Market — known to locals as MOM’s — sees your tuna fish and raises it to a tuna melt on French loaf with Havarti and pickled fennel. BY K AY WEST Raise your hand if this has happened to you: A distant family member, high school classmate you vaguely remember or someone you briefly dated reaches out with the news they are coming to your town and wants suggestions on where they should eat. This is a broad and ambiguous question best answered by mailing a copy of, or sending a link to, Xpress’s annual Eats & Drinks guide so they can peruse the vast possibilities for themselves. Meanwhile, let’s make a pinkie promise to keep these hometown favorites to ourselves. • The Latin Triangle of Taqueria Muñoz, A Taste of El Salvador and Pupuseria Patty will take you to Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras, all within walking distance of each other on Patton Avenue in West Asheville. Regulars know to get the lengua taco on made-before-your-eyes tortillas and pork ribs in adobo at Munoz. At El Salvador, locals go for the pillowy pupusas made with rice flour and three types of tamales. At Patty’s, the pupusas are made with cornmeal, and don’t miss owner Patty Saenz’s daily soups chock-full of proteins and vegetables. • Locals have long steered their vehicles to the BP gas station at the corner of Sardis and Sand Hill roads, not to fill their tanks but to feed their craving for award-winning fried chicken sandwiches and burgers. At Sand Hill Kitchen, tucked into a corner of the station’s convenience mart, chef and owner Jamie Wade has the trophies to prove it. Not that she brags on that

or her scratch-made biscuits, rotating sandwich specials and banana pudding from her grandma’s recipe — her customers do that for her. But with a recent glowing feature in Our State magazine, the cat is out of the bag. • Situated in a modest building with a faded sign on Merrimon Avenue, HomeGrown restaurant also has attracted a devoted fan club for its fried chicken and other Southern comfort food staples, from pimento cheese to meatloaf and mashed ’taters. The fare that owner Miki Loomis has dubbed “slow food right quick” has earned HomeGrown Hall of Fame icon status in the Best of WNC Diner/Homestyle category. • Dan Dan the Pancake Man is chef Dan Silo’s nickname, earned by the plate-sized buckwheat pancake on his menu at Sawhorse. A tangy platform for fingerling potatoes, cheddar, duck confit and maple jus, the pancake is breakfast for breakfast, lunch or dinner. At Sawhorse, Silo shares other regional specialties from his Adirondack Mountains hometown, including apple salad, meat pie, poutine, maple beans and an award-winning maple éclair. • For eight consecutive years, Nine Mile has claimed the crown of Asheville’s Best Restaurant in the Best of WNC awards, with additional nods for Restaurant That Best Represents the Spirit of Asheville and Best Restaurant in West Asheville (one of three locations). Unpretentious, warm and welcoming, Nine Mile is known for its whimsically named dishes infused with Caribbean flavor. • Francophiles have long sat chic-to-chic in chef/restaurateur Michel Baudouin’s downtown French boîte, Bouchon. When he wanted to spread the amour, he looked to East Asheville, and in 2019 transformed a former church in Haw Creek into RendezVous. The restaurant practically serves as the neighborhood dining room — with expansive outdoor seating for overflow — and no one stays a stranger when the effusive Baudouin is in the house.

BY K AY WEST Whether your preferred view is mountains, river, skyline or your dining companion romantically backlit by the setting sun, Asheville restaurants have expanded their dining rooms to the great outdoors and will set a table and chairs on any surface that isn’t moving. (Waterfront seating, yes. Floating tables, not yet.) Portable heaters keep the season going from January through December. From rooftops to sidewalks, garden to asphalt, wideopen spaces to enclosed courtyards, it’s all out there. • At Liberty House Coffee & Cafe you can feel good about what you put in your body — ingredients for the simple breakfast and lunch menu are sustainably sourced from local farmers as well as from gardens on the café’s grounds. Enjoy your meal outdoors at cheerful red tables in a serene urban garden that is a salve for mind and soul. • So much to see in the dozens of galleries and studios of the River Arts District. After walking the RAD and feasting your eyes on the work of local artists, take a riverside seat at perennial al fresco faves White Duck Taco Shop or Smoky Park Supper Club. All Souls Pizza plants its picnic tables on the lawn between the restaurant and its kitchen garden. Baby Bull — wild child of RAD’s more refined The Bull and Beggar — occupies the highest point in the district, where patio diners dig into delightfully greasy double cheeseburgers, lobster rolls and salty fries and watch the trains roll by below. • Asheville’s cobblestone and lamp-lit Wall Street is more reminiscent of 19th-century London than the dark caverns of New York City’s financial district. Soak in the charm at several restaurants that expanded their outdoor seating options onto

the sidewalk and street during the pandemic. Among them are farm-to-table pioneer The Market Place; vegan and vegetarian flagship Laughing Seed Café; Contrada, the casual snack/ pizza/gelato/wine/draft cocktail offshoot of neighboring chefdriven Italian spot Cucina 24; and Early Girl Eatery, known for its all-day breakfast, sandwiches, salads and signature fried chicken. • Well-Bred Bakery & Café and Corner Kitchen are within borrow-a-cup-of-sugar distance from each other on Boston Way in Biltmore Village, and both offer outdoor seating to village people as well as tried-and-true menus beloved by locals and visitors. • People-watching is a spectator sport best enjoyed with food and beverage, and downtown Asheville offers the best-fed seats in the house. The historic Grove Arcade in the heart of the city has boosted its food-and-beverage tenants in the last couple of years, so much so that they’ve been dubbed “Page Avenue Restaurant Row.” Most have designated outdoor dining. • Rooftop bars are de rigueur for the cocktail crowd, but diners can also salute the sky and gather round the fire pit on the 2,300-square-foot patio at Harvest Pizzeria on the South Slope. In nearby downtown, Hemingway’s Cuba serves breakfast, lunch, brunch, dinner, tapas and a traditional Cuban sandwich at its tropical-plant-shaded, open-air restaurant.

BY GINA SMITH Even when the weather is fine, dining out with kids isn’t always a picnic. Wiggly young bodies, picky palates and adult-focused menus and environments can make family restaurant outings stressful. But plenty of eateries scattered throughout Asheville have fun food and casual atmospheres designed to make eating out with kids as easy as child’s play. • If family fuel tanks start running low during downtown adventures, the city’s first food hall, S&W Market, is a sure bet for pleasing the whole crowd. The gorgeous 1920s-era Art Deco building houses a collection of locally owned mini-restaurants serving everything from tacos and hot dogs to bao buns and curries plus ice cream for dessert. For adults, a mezzanine-level outpost of Highland Brewing Co. has beers on tap. • Also downtown, Woolworth Walk’s Soda Fountain is another historic dining destination with something to please all ages. Sharing space with a large art gallery in a circa-1938 Woolworth’s building, the Soda Fountain occupies the spot of the original store’s luncheonette. Climb onto one of the shiny red vinyl stools at the lunch counter to order an egg cream or banana split, or grab a hot dog (or veggie dog), tuna melt or something else from the wide selection of sandwiches and salads. • For a more modern take on fun, Asheville Pizza & Brewing Co. in North Asheville has long dominated the Best of WNC

poll’s Kid-Friendly Restaurant category with its winning concept of movie theater meets arcade meets restaurant meets brewery. Order from the huge, creative menu of pizzas (gluten-free and vegan options available), nachos, quesadillas and sandwiches either in the spacious, whimsically decorated game room or in the building’s first-run movie theater. • If some outdoor time is in order, Creekside Taphouse in East Asheville is a local favorite for families seeking a spot to unwind and let the kids play. A playground, lawn games and picturesque creek next to the large covered patio will please youngsters as will the kids menu of burgers, hot dogs and chicken. Main menu items like smoked wings and the Taphouse Reuben ensure the adults are happy, as does the full bar and locally brewed beer on tap. • Also offering fresh-air food and fun for all ages are the many Asheville-area breweries that feature large outdoor spaces and in-house restaurants. The reigning local monarch of this model might be Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.’s huge taproom and restaurant near Asheville Regional Airport. The wood-fired pizzas and entrées packed with fresh-picked produce and herbs from the on-site garden will satisfy grownup palates, while the classic kids menu of burgers, chicken, mac ’n’ cheese and pizzas will keep small family members happy before heading out to explore the expansive lawn, patio, walking trails and outdoor games. • Just a short drive south of Biltmore Village, Sweeten Creek Brewing offers a homier, scaled-down version of Sierra Nevada’s concept. Nestled beside the small taproom and brewhouse is an outpost of popular South Slope barbecue joint Bear’s Smokehouse BBQ, serving both meaty and vegan options from baby-back ribs to smoked portobellos. Eat inside or carry your meal out to the large, creekside backyard area, which has picnic tables, a fenced dog park, a stage for live music and lots of room to play.

BY THOMAS CALDER There are plenty of ways to plan your days in Asheville. For many, it starts with a cup of coffee. But here’s something to keep in mind — that mug doesn’t have to sit idle for the next 24 hours awaiting the subsequent sunrise. In fact, when it comes to coffee shops, visitors and residents alike could spend days exploring the city’s locally owned cafes and, in some cases, locally roasted beans. Of course, not everyone cares for a cup of joe. (We all have our flaws.) Fortunately, there are plenty of other pick-me-up beverages available at shops throughout the city. • In 2021, Best of WNC voters named BattleCat Coffee Bar in West Asheville No. 1 for its vibes. Check out the shop’s Instagram (@battlecatcoffeebar), and it’s easy to see why: BattleCat isn’t afraid to have fun. For example, on the plexiglass safety wall installed to limit staff exposure to COVID-19, someone has drawn a Captain Hook mustache, offering lighthearted photo opportunities to both baristas and guests. • High Five Coffee has been an Asheville fixture since 2009. With two locations downtown and one along the French Broad River in neighboring Woodfin, it’s a convenient neighborhood hangout for many locals. The flagship shop on Broadway features a sunny patio for outdoor sipping, or visit the Woodfin location to grab a beverage for a stroll along the riverside trail.

And yet, you remain hungry, and you’re still interested in getting in a few hours of shopping. So where to turn? The answer is simple: anywhere north, south, east or west. Though no other city or town in Western North Carolina is quite like Asheville, all have their own charms, especially when it’s time to satisfy one’s hunger or thirst. • In the mood for a daytrip that includes pizza? Head north to neighboring Weaverville and order a slice or a whole pie at Blue Mountain Pizza, voted Business that Best Represents the Spirit of Weaverville in the 2021-22 Best of WNC. While you’re there, consider dessert and a brew from fellow Best of WNC favorites Well-Bred Bakery & Café and Eluvium Brewing Co. • Farther north along the French Broad River is Marshall, the county seat of Madison County. The quaint town packs a lot of interesting history as well as an impressive selection of food and drink options. Inside the former Marshall Jail, visitors will find Zadie’s Kitchen, offering a rotating seasonal menu of Appalachian-inspired breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner items, including burgers, salads and snacks. • To the west, Sylva awaits. The county seat of Jackson County offers a vibrant mix of local cafés, bars, breweries and restaurants — not to mention an impressive flight of stairs leading up to the former courthouse-turned-library. Start the day right with a caffeinated beverage and breakfast sandwich from White Moon coffee shop. When lunch rolls around, consider sampling some eclectic farm-to-table fare at Guadalupe Café — masala-spiced fries, jerk chicken and ginger noodles are just a few of the flavorful options available at the Main Street eatery. Come nightfall, Lulu’s on Main is a popular spot for an evening bite with an eclectic menu ranging from Asian noodle dishes to a meatloaf patty melt to stacked portobello mushroom Napoleon. • East of Asheville is Black Mountain, home of the LEAF Festival — a family-friendly celebration of world culture hosted each May and October. For a morning visit, the locally beloved breakfast burrito at Louise’s Kitchen is a sure bet. For a lunchtime sandwich, salad or wrap, Veranda has long been a neighborhood favorite. And The Trailhead covers both lunch and dinner cravings with its half-pound Angus beef burgers, house-made chili and ever-changing daily specials. There are multiple choices for making an endof-the-day toast with a local brew. Asheville welcomed its first food hall, S&W Market, in June 2021. The unique 1920s-era art deco building that houses the collection of locally owned mini-restaurant concepts and an outpost of Highland Brewing Co. was originally a location of the Charlotte-based S&W Cafeteria chain. Its architect, Douglas Ellington, was responsible for many of Asheville’s most iconic buildings, including Asheville High School and First Baptist Church.

Despite a few closures (Fermented Nonsense Brewstillery, Tasty Beverage Co.) and relocations (nomadic Daidala Ciders is now based in Oregon but may return), local breweries and bottle shops adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic’s numerous challenges and have emerged seemingly stronger than ever. • The second Asheville beer maker to celebrate 25 years of operation, Green Man Brewery bravely set up shop on the South Slope long before Burial Beer Co., Twin Leaf Brewery and others turned the former industrial district into one of the preeminent beer tourist destinations. While Green Man’s focus has broadened considerably from its English-style roots to include a host of IPAs and the city’s first sour program, its flagship ESB and porter remain some of its best sellers. • Downtown Asheville has developed an unofficial “cider district” with Noble Cider, Botanist & Barrel and Bold Rock Hard Cider situated within a few easily walkable blocks of each other. Meanwhile, Urban Orchard Cider Co. continues to supply West Asheville and the South Slope with delicious, gluten-free options ranging from bone-dry (Arid Apple) to semisweet (Sunglasses at Night, made with strawberries and fresh basil).

• Whistle Hop Brewing Co.’s creative takes on traditional styles, like its Elderflower Session IPA, are enough to bring patrons out to Fairview, and the array of environments in which to imbibe the beverages encourages staying for another round. From the repurposed caboose taproom to 3 acres of outdoor space, complete with picnic tables, a fire pit and a variety of outdoor games (mini golf! Connect 4! bocce!), it’s well worth the drive. • Hi-Wire Brewing may not be going to the moon just yet, but its continued expansion in Asheville, across North Carolina and into other East Coast markets remains otherworldly. In addition to opening taprooms in Wilmington, N.C., and Louisville, Ky., the circus-themed establishment recently began welcoming visitors to its beautiful, spacious River Arts District Beer Garden — and additional spots in Charlotte, Cincinnati and Birmingham, Ala., are still on the way. Not bad for a business that’s been in operation just under 10 years. • The original River Arts District source for craft suds, Wedge Brewing Co. has organically spread out from its original Wedge Studios roots up the railroad tracks to the suddenly bustling Foundation property, which 12 Bones Smokehouse and Grail Moviehouse likewise call home. Perennial favorites Iron Rail IPA and Community Porter will soon also flow from taps downtown once Wedge opens its upcoming tasting room in the corner of the historic Grove Arcade.

On May 1, 1933, Asheville residents celebrated the return of beer. Nationally, Prohibition lasted 13 years, beginning in 1920. However, in Asheville, the city had been dry since the autumn of 1907.

In addition to the array of creative burgers and sandwiches, UJ’s quesadilla and taco options are sure to satisfy nearly any craving. • Just past Beaver Lake on the outskirts of Woodfin, The Barrelhouse offers midnight revelers fried deviled eggs and an assortment of pierogis. Looking for more traditional fare? The menu also has plenty of classic pub food and vegan options. • Home to one of Asheville’s favorite burgers, Rankin Vault Cocktail Lounge is a reliably welcoming space for downtown revelers seeking nighttime nourishment. • Over in West Asheville, The Malvern is a favorite haunt for locals looking for a respite from the tourist bustle. The range of starters, salads, sandwiches and sides will keep you going until last call. • Nestled between Green Man Brewery and Catawba Brewing Co. on the South Slope, The Barksdale attracts night owls with its affordably priced hot dogs, PBR and Miller High Life. It’s an Asheville gem, hidden in plain sight. • After catching a nationally touring or local act at The Orange Peel, sustenance awaits just one block down the Hilliard Avenue hill at Storm Rhum Bar. Along with friendly bartenders and a well-curated soundtrack, its late-night menu is available 10:30 p.m.-1 a.m. daily. Options change every few days, but you can count on the likes of a Korean hot dog, tabbouleh and Not Tots — fried fingerling potatoes with house-made aioli. • Just off Patton Avenue on Church Street lies Foggy Mountain Brew Pub, home to a wide range of beverages and sophisticated bar food — particularly popular are the big bowl of mac and cheese and Cuban sandwich. Plus, those looking to keep a musical evening going will often find a band hard at work just inside the front door. • One of the newer additions to the night-owl food scene is Parlor, upstairs from Asheville Beauty Academy. Self-described as “comfort food with a twist,” the menu includes meat and vegan crunch wraps, as well as house-made Pop-Tarts.

While locals and tourists alike can hop among all three types of businesses, a growing number of performance locales conveniently offer inhouse food and beverages to meet their patrons’ diverse wishes. • The Orange Peel attracts some of the nation’s top local and touring artists throughout the year, and most nights music fans can dine from Hashi Hana’s menu in the back room. Chef Hannah Kirschner’s Japanese street food menu features meat and vegan hot dogs topped with yuzu, daikon, kimchi and other delights, as well as sweet treats such as a strawberry jasmine mocha pancake. • While rocking out with punk, metal and other alternative acts at The Odditorium, don’t forget to refuel with one of the kitchen’s classic bar fare sandwiches — particularly the cheeseburger, Cuban and grilled cheese — and pair it with some onion rings. It’ll have you returning on Sundays for the brunch fare, which includes pancakes, hash browns and fresh fruit. • What’s in a name? Isis Restaurant & Music Hall serves Southern-inspired dishes that may be enjoyed in the dining room in the front half of the historic Haywood Road building. Chef Dano Holcomb’s twists on soul food include gumbo, chicken wings (sorry, “wangz”) and a variety of sliders with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options available daily. • The Grey Eagle has remained a force in the local music scene for nearly 30 years, and for much of the past decade, its Taqueria by the bar has enhanced the overall experience. Before and during shows by some of the nation’s (and world’s) most talented musicians, attendees can chow down on a range of traditional and not-so-traditional tacos, fried plantains, empanadas and salads — or swing by earlier in the day for a bite before the artists arrive. • A co-venture of Asheville Brewing Co. and The Orange Peel, sprawling Coxe Avenue venue Rabbit Rabbit gifts downtown with outdoor shows from major acts, many of whom are new to Asheville or might have skipped Western North Carolina if a space of that size were not available. Feeding up to 4,000 guests is the AVL Taco Truck, which specializes in its namesake items plus burritos, nachos and poke bowls.

Old Europe Pastries is known for three signature macarons — chocolate, pistachio and vanilla — as well as rotating seasonal flavors. • “Save room for dessert!” should be taken as an order at RosaBees, the Hawaiian restaurant in the River Arts District where owner/pastry chef Melissa Gray makes masterpieces on a plate. Asheville Proper is known for its dinner-and-ashow live-fire cooking of steaks, seafood, vegetables and dark chocolate s’mores with toasted meringue. • No need to scream for ice cream, Asheville has plenty for everyone. Chill out with a bowl, cone or milkshake from local ice cream makers The Hop and Ultimate Ice Cream. Downtown, Sunshine Sammies delivers fresh-baked cookies and house-made ice cream in one big fat bundle of joy. • Chocoholics punch a golden ticket in Asheville, which delivers a decadent dive into a quartet of chocolatiers and their specialties, all without leaving downtown. Start with bonbons and hot Oaxacan chocolate at French Broad Chocolate Lounge and take away a bar set for later. Both Asheville Chocolate and The Chocolate Fetish specialize in truffles, and if fudge is your jam, Kilwin’s has multiple flavors, but chocolate is unsurprisingly the shop’s No. 1.

Fortunately, Asheville is home to numerous savvy and thoughtful chefs who make sure being vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free doesn’t mean sacrificing flavor or choices. • Looking for an upscale meal without the gluten? On Biltmore Avenue in the heart of downtown, Posana has a dedicated 100% gluten-free kitchen from which executive chef Peter Pollay and pastry chef Renee Hill produce its vibrant menu of seasonal, farm-to-table dishes. • For an Italian take on gluten-free and vegan, walk a few blocks north to Strada Italiano, where chef Anthony Cerrato’s menu of hand-tossed pizzas, house-made pastas, entrées and desserts includes numerous options for diners on special diets. Cerrato’s vegan and gluten-free lasagna features house-made almond ricotta and Beyond Meat Bolognese with house marinara, and for dessert, the chef’s family tiramisu recipe is a must-try (and gluten-free!). On weekends, the brunch menu hits all the right notes with dishes like vegan “lox” on a gluten-free bagel and breakfast poutine with vegan Beyond Meat gravy.

• Veggie-loving locals know well the way to Wall Street, where Laughing Seed Café has been happily dishing out global vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free fare since 1993 (it actually launched in 1991 as a lunch counter in the basement of the local YMCA). The brown rice Harmony Bowl is a local staple, but don’t miss out on the creative and colorful selection of tacos, pizzas, curries and salads. • In 2011, nationally lauded upscale vegan restaurant Plant sprouted from Laughing Seed’s kitchen as a venture of former Laughing Seed chef Jason Sellers. More than a decade later, Plant continues to harvest accolades from the likes of Food & Wine, Travel & Leisure and USA Today with its mostly organic menu. The superb house-made vegan cheeses, pastas and ice creams are a particular draw and are best washed down with something from the house list of sustainable, organic and biodynamic wines. • Another longtime Asheville vegan favorite, Rosetta’s Kitchen & Buchi Bar, serves a casual, free-spirited vibe along with its menu of plant-based comfort food classics, now from a new space on North Lexington Avenue. This is the place to go if you’re craving anything from vegan chili cheese fries to a rice bowl with smoky tofu and house-cultured kimchi. Those in the mood for a locally brewed Buchi kombucha, cocktail, mocktail, herbal elixir or other beverage will find a vast array of options on Rosetta’s eclectic Buchi Bar menu. • Vegetarians have long depended on the veggie pizza as a fast answer to an empty belly. But Asheville expands that option to vegan and gluten-free diners with a range of choices. Downtown, Mellow Mushroom offers dedicated vegan and gluten-free menus featuring not only pizzas but also sandwiches, salads and desserts. Near Biltmore Village, The Original Papa Nick’s (conveniently situated next to French Broad River Brewery) complements its traditional pizza offerings with gluten-free pies and locally made Daré vegan cheese. In West Asheville, the same goes for Grata Pizzeria, located inside UpCountry Brewing Co. And diners at both Galactic Pizza and Pizza Mind can opt for gluten-free crust and Daiya dairy-free cheese, but Galactic ups the ante with house-made vegan pepperoni topping, while Pizza Mind has a gluten-free bun option on its sandwich menu.

(The collective shudder from Asheville’s brewing industry just reverberated outward from South Slope to surrounding counties.) When it comes to bellying up to the bar, there are plenty of options besides taprooms. The local hospitality industry rolls out the welcome mat with creative concoctions for all. • Wine bars have established a stomping ground in Asheville. Since opening on a side street in a still sleepy downtown 12 years ago, 5 Walnut Wine Bar has not only stood the test of time but has improved with age, adding a cheese and meat build-a-board menu to pair with your wine. Live music nightly showcases local acts. Tucked into the lower level of a River Arts District warehouse repurposed to artist studios, Bottle Riot exhibits the work of Asheville artists in multiple mediums and is a favorite gathering spot for the arty set to mingle. Grape expectations anticipated the long-delayed opening of West Asheville’s first wine bar, and Leo’s House of Thirst has not disappointed. The carefully renovated building received a prestigious Griffin Award from the Preservation Society of

Asheville Buncombe County, and Leo’s self-describes its lovely grounds as “a garden to drink in.” • Plēb Urban Winery remains Asheville’s only in-town vintner, harvesting local grapes to make natural wines in a former industrial building on Lyman Street in the River Arts District. Pleb’s tasting room is casual and spacious, with roll-up garage doors that provide access to outdoor seating. In 2021, Plēb (pronounced “pleeb”) opened a downtime satellite tasting room, The Aventine. • Try before you buy! Biltmore Estate visitors can top off a tour of the estate and grounds with a complimentary pick-five sampling of reds, whites and rosés in the tasting room of the Biltmore Estate Winery and then stroll over to the adjacent wine bar for more. • Mixed company finds harmony at two breweries that have added winemaking to their repertoire. Wicked Weed Brewing pours its own Vidl label in its downtown brewpub, Funkatorium. And Burial Beer makes VISUALS natural red wines, cider and sparkling cider at its Forestry Camp outpost, pouring vintages there and in the original South Slope taproom. • Bibliophiles and bubbleheads cannot resist the seductive siren call of the quirky, lushly furnished Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar, where shoppers and browsers can settle into a cozy corner and enjoy both. • A menu of craft and classic cocktails is practically written into the Asheville city charter for bars and restaurants, but a few that have built stellar reputations on their masterful mixology are The Times Bar, Top of the Monk, Sovereign Remedies, Ther Crow & Quill and Little Jumbo, which in 2021 was touted as one of Garden & Gun’s Best Cocktail Bars of the South. • Sober curious? Many Asheville bartenders are devoted to creating sophisticated nonalcoholic drinks for guests who don’t care to indulge in spirits. Teetotalers can belly up year-round to the bars of three popular downtown watering holes that participated in the inaugural 2022 Sober January self-guided Mocktail Tour — The Montford Rooftop Bar, The Blackbird and Pillar Rooftop Bar. If a margarita is what you crave, Mountain Madre mixes them up fresh using a nonalcoholic tequila option. In West Asheville, just say no to a negroni and yes to a NoGroni, one of the nonalcoholic cocktails that have made a splash on The Golden Pineapple’s mocktail menu. • Hava kava, say the owners of two kava bars in Asheville. For nearly a decade, downtown pioneer Sovereign Kava has been mixing up nonalcoholic but mood-elevating drinks with the beverage brewed from the ground roots of a Pacific Island pepper plant. Eggs and bacon? Oatmeal? Avocado and toast? Pancakes? Whatever you’re craving, Asheville has you covered. • If you’re looking for a local favorite, head to West Asheville and grab a table indoors or outside near the garden at Sunny Point Café, voted No. 1 for breakfast in the 2021-22 Best of WNC polls. Whether you have a hankering for a breakfast burrito, steak and eggs, stuffed French toast or a chicken and waffle sandwich, the neighborhood hot spot has plenty of options. • Just down the street, family-owned Biscuit Head also relies on fresh, locally sourced ingredients for its crave-worthy, Southerninspired menu focusing on giant, fluffy biscuits. Since it opened in 2013, the restaurant, which has three Asheville locations and a fourth in Greenville, S.C., has been featured in many national publications, including The New York Times, Bon Appétit, Food & Wine and USA Today. • Another long-time local darling, Early Girl Eatery, which features a locally and regionally sourced menu, has three locations in Asheville as well as a satellite restaurant in Charlotte.

Downtown, Jerusalem Garden Café is open for brunch 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, serving a globetrotting range of options, from Southern biscuits and gravy to house-made challah French toast to dishes with Middle Eastern flavors, such as egg gyros and ribeye kabobs with eggs and potato harra. • At nearby Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse, weekends bring fun, outside-the-box brunch choices like breakfast ramen with tonkatsu egg broth or shishito pepper-cheddar biscuits with Japanese sausage gravy and eggs. Whatever you choose, wash it down with a brunch cocktail like the Breakfast Oldie, made with sesame bacon-washed bourbon, miso demerara and bacon garnish. • A few blocks away in Asheville’s historic Black business district, the Block, Benne on Eagle offers an upscale Sunday brunch experience showcasing the talents of James Beard Award-nominated chef de cuisine Cleophus Hethington. Try traditional staples like French toast and omelets or unique, chef-driven creations honoring the cuisine of the African diaspora, such as Haitian griot (pork shoulder) and sorghum grain hash with seasonal vegetables, sprouted black-eyed peas and a poached egg. • Also downtown but a bit off the beaten path, Noble Cider offers one of the city’s Sunday brunch sleeper hits. Sip on a cider mimosa flight while munching on cider-infused entrées ranging from steak and eggs to vegan and gluten-free dishes like the breakfast bowl with sweet potato and apple hash and locally made Smiling Hara tempeh.
