BY THOMAS CALDER Keep Asheville Weird. You’ve probably come across this slogan plastered across many a rear bumper. And, of course, the city is doing its best to live up to the catchphrase. The buskers help. As does the cast of LaZoom. The drum circle has been keeping a steady beat of unique rhythms as well. But more recently, the food scene has also grown in its own unusual ways. • From an architectural and structural standpoint, there’s nothing conventional about Smoky Park Supper Club. The restaurant and event space, which sits along the French Broad River, is constructed from 19 shipping containers. Serving dinner Tuesday-Saturday, as well as brunch, lunch and dinner every Sunday, Smoky Park offers seasonal wood-fired food, craft beer and cocktails. • For those seeking some fun while they dine, downtown’s Well Played Board Game Café and Fractals Coffee Shop and Cafe in West Asheville offer plenty. The former provides visitors with over 500 games to choose from, along with local craft beer, flatbreads, sandwiches, wraps and a variety of desserts. The latter has a virtual reality time machine and a museum of oddities to explore while sipping lattes and snacking on an assortment of salads, soups and panini sandwiches.

• A melding of Asheville’s craft brewing and food scenes, White Labs offers a little bit of everything: educational opportunities, training rooms, a boutique restaurant, a beer tasting room and a brewing yeast production facility. Located on South Charlotte Street, the company describes itself as an organization “at the intersection of science, education and craft.” Its Kitchen & Tap serves lunch and dinner, with a fermentation-focused menu that includes poutine, wings, pizza, cheeseburgers and desserts. • Asheville may be known for its beer, but those seeking a different kind of buzz should head south on Biltmore Avenue to Noble Kava. Owned by husband-and-wife team Andrew Procyk and Seely Flow, the establishment offers nonalcoholic mocktails made with kava, a root native to the South Pacific that’s known for its mellowing effect. The business also carries kava in both candy and powder forms. • For drinks with a spritz of adventure, check out The Speakeasy at Conundrum. The venue, located downtown in the basement of the former Battery Park Hotel, pairs absinthe and Prohibition-era cocktails with fun and games. Come for the beverages, then make your way into (and hopefully out of) the escape room. Or try a comedic beer- or wine-tasting experience staged in a darkened room.

BY EDWIN ARNAUDIN The robust Asheville-area beer industry continues to grow with the addition of over 10 breweries in the past year and more on the way. The new businesses expand the already healthy South Slope district and fill niches in developing neighborhoods whose residents return the favor with steady patronage. Along with attracting crowds from near and far, breweries both new and established have added to their reputations by winning medals at prestigious national competitions and receiving honors from major publications. • At the 2017 Great American Beer Festival, Wedge Brewing Co. won the gold medal in the German-Style Marzen category. Its Asheville Lager beat out 121 other entries and is occasionally available at both Wedge locations in the River Arts District alongside the brewery’s diverse portfolio. • Mere months after opening on the edge of Biltmore Village, Hillman Beer took home a GABF bronze in the Belgian-Style Dubbel or Quadrupel competition for its Belgian-style quad, Four Fat Baby. It was one of 75 entries vying for the honor. • Formerly in Waynesville, BearWaters Brewing Co. moved to Canton in 2017 and shortly thereafter won a GABF bronze among Belgian-Style Strong Specialty Ales (74 total entries) for Smells Like Money, its Belgian-style dark strong ale.

• Currahee Brewing Co. in Franklin won a bronze in Coffee Stout or Porter (114 entries) for its Kawi Coffee Milk Stout. If the Macon County taproom feels too far away, Kawi and other Currahee products — including the Frankenstark Belgian-style Golden Ale — are available in local bottle shops and grocery stores. • A month before Southern Living readers named Highland Brewing Co. the South’s Best Brewery of 2018 in March, Asheville’s oldest brewery underwent a dramatic rebranding. Its colorful new-look taproom and adults-only rooftop bar are among the multiple places on the East Asheville property to enjoy a pint. • Mills River’s Bold Rock Hard Cider — which also has a cidery in Nellysford, Va. — had its new seasonal rosé varietal spotlighted in pieces by CNBC and the New York Daily News. Bundle a taproom trip with a visit to Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. or make it the sole excuse for a drive across county lines. • Part of a growing section of the industry that’s not quite to the point of competitions is Ginger’s Revenge in Woodfin, a few miles north of downtown Asheville. The brewery opened in March 2017 and serves a plethora of alcoholic ginger beers, all of which, like ciders, are naturally gluten-free. Try the beverages straight up or order a mixology flight that combines house brews with additional ingredients from behind the bar to make the ginger flavor more approachable.

BY THOMAS CALDER “All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast,” declared American journalist and author John Gunther. Fortunately for Ashevilleans, there are plenty of tasty ways to ease into the day. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty morning meal or something a bit more extravagant, you won’t be short on options. And if you’re looking to extend your unhurried breakfast into brunch, the local restaurant scene has you covered there, too. • With locations in West and South Asheville, Biscuit Head’s slogan is “Put some South in your mouth.” It offers the full range of wholesome Southern breakfast options, but biscuits are quite literally its bread and butter. From your classic cheese and egg biscuit to the less-conventional mimosa fried chicken, there’s something for everyone. Be sure to come hungry. As its name suggests, these biscuits are far from small. • The early bird catches the worm. But what happens if the early bird accidentally stayed up too late the previous night binging on Netflix? Not to worry! King Daddy’s is open for those who seek breakfast at any given hour. The West Asheville restaurant serves chicken and waffles and other early morning options 8 a.m.-10 p.m., seven days a week. The brainchild of husband and wife team John and Julie

Stehling, King Daddy’s is the couple’s second restaurant. They recently sold their first business, Early Girl Eatery — another beloved breakfast spot that opened downtown in 2001 — to The Blackbird owners Jesson and Cristina Gil. • Although The Blackbird doesn’t do breakfast, it does offer brunch — the fun uncle of breakfast and lunch. And Asheville sure has a lot of other fun uncles to choose from as well. For weekend warriors, the widely praised Cúrate offers traditional Spanish cuisine options, including its huevos estrellados (a baked egg with chorizo over a piperrada of peppers, onions and tomatoes) and torrijas (challah loaf soaked in a citrus cinnamon custard). Cocktail highlights include the grapefruit mimosa and bloody Mary Cúrate. • Also downtown, Sovereign Remedies features brunch on weekends until 3 p.m., augmenting its artisan cocktail menu with diverse food offerings such as a full English breakfast and carnitas fries with a sunny-side-up egg. • For Louisiana-inspired brunch fare, head to Mayfel’s. The menu caters to those craving either breakfast or lunch, starting with several versions of eggs Benedict and omelets and moving on to gumbo, salads, muffaletta and a diverse selection of po’boys and other sandwiches.

Asheville’s coffee shops, tearooms and juice bars also boast their own thriving cultures centered on craft-focused drinks. • To sip coffee, a smoothie or a milkshake inside an iconic piece of Asheville history, make a stop at Double D’s Coffee & Desserts. Operating out of a red 1963 Bristol Lodekka double-decker bus, the downtown shop was lauded as a local landmark in a 2017 Our State article highlighting its colorful history. The bus was shipped from London to the U.S. in the 1970s and has been welcoming guests at its corner in Asheville since 1999. • One of Asheville’s celebrity residents, novelist Charles Frazier, recommends a downtown coffee haunt that beckons to the literary-minded. In a February 2018 story in GQ magazine, Frazier highlighted the Battery Park Book Exchange with its two floors of used and rare books, cozy reading nooks and well-stocked coffee and wine bars as a likely spot to while away some time with a good read. • Looking to get caffeinated in other parts of the city? On the south side, Brother Joe’s Coffee Pub functions as a coffee shop by day, before it morphs into a bar at night serving locally brewed Thirsty Monk beers. Popular East Asheville gathering spot Filo does a similar transformation.

Its daytime menu features coffee drinks and teas plus sweet treats and baked goods made by pastry chef Maria Papanastasiou, but after 5 p.m., it converts to Post 70 Indulgence Bar, offering small plates and craft cocktails. • For those who aim to wind up at a nice place to wind down, the area has a growing assortment of tearooms. Dobrá Tea’s owners regularly journey to exotic global locales to assure fair sourcing of the hundreds of teas offered at its three Ashevillearea locations. Meanwhile, Alchemy, a tearoom, acupuncture clinic and apothecary, offers a menu of loose teas, Chinese herbal blends, raw cacao sipping elixirs and broths. • Tucked away in a quiet second-floor space on Depot Street in the River Arts District, Nourish & Flourish offers an extensive list of organic, fair-trade teas as well as an impressive menu of house-made, locally sourced juice blends. • Another hidden gem, Farmacy Juice & Tonic Bar operates out of West Asheville’s West Village Market, serving organic juices, smoothies, tonics and soups. • Heading south, Milk & Honey Organic Café in Arden has an array of cold-pressed juices and superfood elixirs along with a health-focused food menu from Culinary Institute of America-trained chef and owner Chris Holden.

Restaurants that bring the two assets together offer a memorable experience and have become hot commodities among locals and visitors alike. Here are a few standout options: • The go-to spot in Asheville for a meal with spectacular sights, the Omni Grove Park Inn offers an array of dining options with vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains, including Mount Pisgah. The Blue Ridge Artisanal Buffet, Vue 1913, Edison Craft Ales + Kitchen and the Sunset Terrace also each look out onto the cityscape a few miles away. • For a more urban vantage point of the same peaks, head to Hemingway’s Cuba on the fourth-floor terrace of the Cambria Hotel. The tastes of Havana and the open-air balcony’s islandappropriate white upholstered furniture blend well with the surrounding buildings and the distant forest scenery. • Located atop the downtown Hyatt Place hotel, The Montford Rooftop Bar showcases unobstructed views of the surrounding mountains. Though foremost true to its name with an extensive

menu of craft cocktails, beer and wine, its menu of small and shareable plates features creative spins on Southern staples. Most of the dishes, which include diverse choices such as blue crab fritters, brisket sliders and seitan flatbread, are crafted with locally and regionally sourced ingredients. â&#x20AC;˘ Up on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the modestly sized restaurant at the Pisgah Inn plays host to a dazzling panorama of Pisgah National Forest highlights, including Looking Glass Rock. The popular seasonal operation is open April through October. â&#x20AC;˘ Of the numerous restaurants on the Biltmore Estate, the Library Lounge at The Inn provides the most stunning sights. Fresh artisan salads and gourmet sandwiches can be enjoyed against the backdrop of sweeping views of the fields and hills surrounding the inn, as well as a portion of the Biltmore House itself.

BY GINA SMITH Unsurprisingly, many foodies flock to Asheville to get a taste of its fine Southern and Appalachian culinary offerings. But this mountain city has plenty to please those with more exotic palates as well. • In recent years, the area around Pritchard Park has evolved into a downtown international food district. The restaurants on Patton Avenue and College Street near the park reflect a colorful smorgasbord of cultures. On one block of Patton, sample Himalayan flavors at Kathmandu Café, Chinese dim sum at Red Ginger, traditional Ethiopian fare at Addisae and Middle Eastern delicacies at Jerusalem Garden. Right across the street, grab some Irish bangers and mash at Claddagh Restaurant & Pub or an English ploughman’s lunch at Jack of the Wood, take a tasting tour of the world’s curries at Blue Dream Curry House or travel south of the border at Sonora Cocina Mexicana. • On Lexington Avenue, Calypso owner Esther Joseph brings the Caribbean flavors and island aesthetic of her native St. Lucia to Appalachia. The craft cocktail bar boasts a

dedicated rum menu, and the kitchen specializes in West Indies dishes such as callaloo, rotis, conch escabeche, oxtail and salt fish. • West Asheville’s hopping food scene also has its own international flair. Gypsy Queen Cuisine started life as one of Asheville’s most popular food trucks and eventually expanded to include a brick-and-mortar location on Patton Avenue that dishes up authentic Lebanese falafels, shawarma, fattoush, kibbe and more. • Head down Haywood Road to Beachum’s Curve for Asian ramen bowls and handmade dumplings at Gan Shan West, a tiny outpost tapped by “CNN Travel” in its list of “18 BestPlaces to Visit in 2018.” An expansion of chef Patrick McCain’s original North Asheville eatery, Gan Shan Station, the space also hosts Japanese izakaya pop-up dinners on alternating Sundays with chef Khan Kogure. • But you don't have to wait until Sunday for authentic Japanese fare. Downtown, Heiwa Shokudo has been a neighborhood fixture for years with its vegetarian-friendly menu of bento box meals, sushi and noodles. And just north of downtown, the recently opened WakuWaku Eatery specializes in healthy, homestyle Japanese favorites such as okonomiyaki, yakisoba and osouzai. • In search of a French connection? Vivian in the River Arts District seamlessly blends Appalachian ingredients into European-inspired dishes such as country pork terrine, seared foie gras and artichoke a la Mornay. Downtown, Bouchon serves boeuf Bourguignon and other French comfort food classics that owner Michel Baudouin grew up with in his native Lyon. In West Asheville, OWL Bakery offers not only exceptional croissants, pastries and naturally leavened breads, but also a charming European-style café and garden area in which to enjoy them.

Whether you’re a chocolate fiend, a doughnut connoisseur, an ice cream fanatic or a combination of all three, the city has what the sugar addict needs. • Let’s start with chocolates — specifically, French Broad Chocolates. Not only does it offer guests a number of options — from truffles to cookies, from cakes to brownies — it also has a number of locations. At Pack Square, you can visit both its lounge and boutique shop. If you shoot north on Merrimon Avenue, you’ll first encounter Duck Donuts with its choose-your-own menu, and then you’ll run across Geraldine’s Bakery with its glazed, sprinkled, sliced almonds, coconut, Bismarck, Boston cream and fried Danish doughnut options. • Of course, on a hot summer day, nothing beats a sweet cooldown with an ice cream cone, milkshake or frozen custard. As with doughnuts, Asheville offers plenty of choices. In West Asheville, Frostbite Ice Cream offers soft-serve ice cream made from locally sourced ingredients, plus other treats like funnel cakes and coffee floats. • For something a little different, Whit’s Frozen Custard, with its two locations in North and South Asheville, creates three fresh flavors daily. And downtown, Sunshine Sammies combines handmade cookies and ice cream for a double dessert whammy. • Meanwhile, The Hop Ice Cream Cafe and The Hop West have earned several awards, including Best of WNC Hall of Fame for Best Asheville Ice Cream and inclusion in the list of the 12 Best Ice Cream Shops in America by Huffington Post and Domino Magazine.

In addition to the copious breweries with food trucks or kitchens that welcome young visitors (even if they can’t sip their primary products), many local restaurants have children’s menus and large enough spaces indoors and/or out where kids can be kids and adults can also have a pleasant time away from home. • Haywood Common in West Asheville has toys for kids and a reputation among neighborhood families — many of whom live within walking distance — for having some of the highestquality local fare in its price range ($8-$20). Also of note is Tykes and Tonic, a Tuesday-Friday 3-5 p.m. after-school social featuring half-priced small plates and kids meals.

• True to its name, Creekside Taphouse in East Asheville has a shallow waterway out back for entertainment and a playground with swings and climbing tires. There are also video games and a Piglet Menu for ages 12 and younger, featuring such items as a pulled pork sandwich, mac and cheese and Hickory Nut Gap Farm hot dogs. • Nearly all local pizzerias have a family-friendly vibe and food that appeals to most children and adults, but at West Asheville’s Pizza Mind, kids (of all ages) can create their own personal pizzas. Crayons, coloring sheets and games round out the experience. • While practically any brewery with a food truck qualifies for inclusion, the daily rotating culinary offerings at New Belgium Brewing Co. in the River Arts District and the expansive open space is a tough combination to beat. Also warranting mention is Sweeten Creek Brewing in South Asheville, with its own sprawling grassy space and a popular sandwich shop with a (predominantly vegetarianfriendly) kids menu. • Salvage Station’s internationally diverse menu mostly caters to adults, but its kids options of chicken fingers, a cheeseburger slider and grilled cheese cover the basics. Adding to the appeal are the property’s pleasant riverside location and giant lawns, on which one will often find a number of children running and playing during daylight hours.

Although food trucks are now one of the most popular dining options in Asheville, the city banned them until 2012. Once regulations changed, the idea Fun instantly caught on, and by 2016, there were Fact more than 60 food trucks permitted within Buncombe County.

BY GINA SMITH Although breweries and cideries abound in Western North Carolina, there is no shortage of venues for other types of tippling. • A 2017 article in Garden & Gun magazine tapped James Beardnominated chef Katie Button’s swanky late-night concept, Nightbell, as a don’t-miss for visitors. But savvy locals also favor the unobtrusive downtown spot for its seasonally rotating cocktail menu that features house-made tinctures, bitters and other crafty elements. Peckish guests can ask for recommendations on pairing drinks with the kitchen’s menu of whimsical, upscale riffs on American culinary classics. • Just north of downtown on Broadway, Little Jumbo glows with sophisticated ambiance that capitalizes on the intrinsic charm of its location in the 1920s-era Jenkins Building. The prodigious menu of artisan cocktails offers standards along with more exotic concoctions, such as The Spicy Dead Lady, which mingles mezcal with Aperol, lime, Velvet Falernum and Firewater Bitters; or the Paloma Brillante, a blend of blanco tequila, citrus, bitters and sparkling wine. A concise but well-rounded food menu furnishes snack, sandwich and dessert options. • A craft rooted in Appalachian tradition, distilling is gaining a modern foothold in Asheville. Peek into the local spirit world with a tour at one of the area’s small distilleries. Oak & Grist in Black Mountain produces its own Genever-style gin and will soon offer barrel-aged single-malt and rye whiskeys and liqueurs. Eda Rhyne Distillery in Biltmore Village goes for a

distinctly Appalachian terroir with its fernet, amaro and nocino, all made with botanicals grown on the owner’s nearby farm and wildcrafted in the surrounding mountains. • For the dedicated oenophile, downtown’s cozy Rustic Grape offers vintages that spotlight family-owned and small-production wineries along with a food menu showcasing sustainably produced artisan cheeses, charcuterie and sweets with brunch service on Sundays. • At District Wine Bar in the River Arts District, one can savor pours of biodynamic and organic wines and European beers in the spacious exposed-brick location that once housed the studio of beloved late local metal sculptor John Payne. • The Wine and Oyster in Biltmore Village delivers as promised with a robust selection of wines and bubblies to accompany its menu of charcuterie, fresh oysters and cold seafood plates.

Warren Haynes’ annual Christmas Jam concert celebrates its 30th year in 2018. The event has raised over $2.1 million to build nearly 40 Asheville Area Fun Habitat for Humanity homes and help offset Fact infrastructure and development costs for local Habitat neighborhoods.

BY GINA SMITH When sitting a spell to slowly savor a meal is not an option, you can still relish some uniquely Asheville eats on the go. • Grab a quick bite while exploring Asheville’s glorious art deco history with a stop at the S&W Artisanal Eatery, a Greek cafeteria, bakery and coffee shop in downtown’s S&W Building. Designed by North Carolina architect Douglas Ellington near the end of the Roaring ’20s, the recently refurbished building also houses an upscale tapas restaurant, craft cocktail bar, nightclub and Greek market. • Just around the corner, Mojo Kitchen’s award-winning chef, A.J. Gregson, has turned fast eats into an art form. Mojo got its start as a mobile eatery serving creative tacos and nachos, and those items still shine. But don’t be afraid to check out other culturebending offerings, including collard green dolmas; crawfish mac and cheese; a fried green tomato, pimento cheese and barbecue burger and a jerk chicken and waffles sandwich. • Also downtown, swing by Manicomio Pizza for a hot, foldable slice of New York-style pizza in a hurry. If you have a few minutes to spare, there’s always the option to have a seat either indoors or on the patio and sample other menu options, including pastas, salads, hot and cold subs and desserts.

• The Grey Eagle Taqueria flies a little under the radar, hiding out inside The Grey Eagle Music Hall in the River Arts District. But 11 a.m.-8 p.m., it’s a favorite local spot to pop in for create-yourown tacos (plenty of vegan and gluten-free options available) and other interesting dishes, such as the chorizo burger, hominy salad or cemita, a Mexican sandwich with guacamole, white cheddar, mojo de ajo, pickled onions and protein of choice on locally baked ciabatta. • If you’re hungry and in a hurry in West Asheville, a stop at the Asheville Sandwich Co. may be in order. Open 10 a.m.-7 p.m., the menu offers several hearty breakfast choices along with an eclectic selection of subs, salads and sides. The shop’s signature french fry sandwiches — featuring options like tofu bahn mi, crispy fish and roast prime rib — are topped with a hefty helping of fresh, hand-cut shoestring fries.

BY GINA SMITH Diners following vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, sugar-free and other special diets have always sought out restaurants that clearly identify what goes into their dishes. But lately, concern about menu transparency has hit the mainstream — Technomic’s 2016 Healthy Eating Consumer Trend Report shows that 86 percent of consumers want to know where their food comes from and what’s in it. Asheville has long been home to a number of eateries that cater to special regimens. And with the city’s history of health-consciousness and pioneering farm-to-table ethos, it also fosters an ever-growing community of restaurants that emphasize honesty when it comes to ingredients and sourcing. • Many folks look to Mexican restaurants for reliable vegetarian and gluten-free menu choices. But Polanco actively puts out the welcome mat for diners who choose to avoid animal products. Although the eatery, located downtown in an elegant historic building, does serve meat, chef and owner Ricardo Carrasco has created a full menu of Mexican vegan options with dedicated kitchen facilities for preparing them. Many dishes are also gluten-free.

• Elements Real Food started out in 2013 as a food truck, but high demand for its organic, cold-pressed juices and vegan rawfood dishes drove owners Zack and Jenni Bier to put down roots on South Liberty Street. In addition to fresh juices, smoothies and nut milks, the café’s menu features plant-based sipping broths, gluten-free granola and acai bowls, sandwiches, salads and raw desserts. • With a tagline of “Real Feelgood Food,” West Asheville’s totally gluten- and sugar-free BimBeriBon covers breakfast, lunch and dinner with an adventurous menu that globe-trots from Korean soondubu and Chinese jian bing to Middle Eastern shakshuka and Indian pakoras. The in-house gluten-free bakery cranks out tempting breads and pastries, and the full bar offers a selection of cocktails, wines and ciders — but no beer, just in case you’re seeking a break from the local brewery scene. • Even with all the new dining options in town, locals still flock to a few time-tested places for vegetarian and gluten-free options. Just north of downtown, Plant has consistently received national attention for its upscale vegan fare, and this year People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals named its cannolo one of the best vegan desserts in the U.S. • Downtown on Pack Square, Posana chef and owner Peter Pollay has acquired a wide following with the exceptional seasonal cuisine he crafts in his completely gluten-free kitchen. • Also downtown, Rosetta’s Kitchen has been serving vegan and vegetarian comfort food in a laid-back and funky upstairs space overlooking Lexington Avenue since 2002. Rosetta’s sliding-scale, pay-it-forward Everyone Eats program ensures anyone who is hungry can get a meal, regardless of ability to pay. And downstairs, Rosetta’s Buchi Bar has both alcoholic and nonalcoholic libations, with Buchi kombucha on tap, six varieties of house-made sodas plus cocktails, mead, wine and beer.
