Welcome to WNC’s 2021 ONLINE GIVING CAMPAIGN

How to participate

1 2

Learn about this year’s 46 participating nonprofits, which are all listed in this handy print guide, as well as on the Give!Local website at givelocalguide.org. Learn about their missions and how they are helping make this a better community.

Go to givelocalguide.org and get started, or fill out page 47 and mail it in.

4

Check out and pay with a credit card.

5

You’re done!

Every penny of your donation goes to the nonprofits you designate — a big thank-you to Blue Mountain Pizza for covering the creditcard fees!

6

3

Decide which nonprofits you want to give to

and how much, from $5 up to as much as you like. As you make your selections, Give!Local’s shopping cart will total what you’ve decided to give to each nonprofit. Before you check out, you will have an opportunity to go back and adjust your amounts if you wish.

If you donate $25 or more, Give!Local will mail you a voucher book about 10 days afterward containing coupons for goods and services at area businesses. If you give $400 or more, an additional incentive packet will be mailed to you in the new year. And if you give $1,500 or more, we will hand-deliver a box of goodies to your home or business in the new year.

GIVE!LOCAL Guide! NOVEMBER 1 – DECEMBER 31

Give!Local Rules • The minimum combined donation to receive an incentive is $25 — unless you are age 12 or under, in which case it is $5. • Donations of $25 or more qualify you for drawings. Winners will be chosen by random drawings. • You can give more than once, but be sure to use the same username and email so we can combine the total of your gifts. • Incentives are limited in quantity. We will try our darnedest to make sure everyone gets an incentive, but incentives will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and no incentives are guaranteed. • Only one incentive package per email address, and two incentive packages per household may be provided. • Children can participate, too! The minimum to earn a Kids Incentive is just $5. Children must have parental approval. Multiple children from one home may give separately, but the incentives will come in one envelope addressed to the parent or guardian (up to four Kids Incentive books per household). • Your contact information will only be given to the nonprofits you donate to. If you do not wish to be contacted by them, there is an opt-out check box. Note that we need your address in order to deliver your incentives. • Give!Local is a web-based giving project, but if you prefer to fill out a paper form and write a check instead, there is a paper form at the back of this print guide (p. 47). Participating by check also saves processing fees — so please consider coordinating with us for donations over $3,000 by calling 828-251-1333.

Our business partners have provided free meals, cups of coffee, adventures off the beaten path and much more. This year is no exception, but for the second year in a row, our local businesses are facing existential challenges, especially in the retail and service industries. If you are a longtime donor through Give!Local, we hope you’ll understand that some rewards may be a little smaller, and it may take longer to receive them.

Thank you for your patience and understanding in this leaner and unpredictable time.

COMMUNITY

103.3 Asheville FM We keep Asheville thriving by producing diverse and eclectic programming that inspires our listeners to build connections across our communities and to discover new music and ideas. “It’s so refreshing to have Asheville FM, where people are volunteers. They come in here, just loving what they do and spreading it throughout the community and being a part of it. It makes us feel like we are a part of the community again. After 20 years of living here, I wondered what was going to happen to the city. And it’s still good to see that people are caring about it and getting back to the roots of what it used to be and what it can be because it’s always going to change.” — Nicholas Hunter, Asheville ashevillefm.org • 828-348-0352

ABCCM ABCCM is a leading nonprofit addressing poverty, hunger, homelessness and access to health care. A family of 310 congregations and 6,068 volunteers provide basic necessities such as food, clothing and limited financial assistance at four Crisis Ministry sites; the Jail Ministry, with (virtual) Bible studies and coordination of religious activities at BCDC; and the Medical Ministry, providing essential medical care with pharmacy services at no cost for the uninsured. The ministry work also focuses on helping veterans through housing and education at Veterans Restoration Quarters, and at Veterans Services of the Carolinas through training and job placement, rapid rehousing services and service coordination for veterans across 56 counties in N.C. Steadfast House provides temporary housing and training for women and children, including veterans, all leading to a living wage and permanent housing. “Both Andrew and Charlie [my sons] have thoroughly come to love volunteering and look forward to going to ABCCM South every week. We all feel that ABCCM South has become a part of our family.” — Dr. Lisa Ladd, longtime volunteer abccm.org • 828-259-5300 • info@abccm.org

Blue Ridge Pride Blue Ridge Pride advocates, celebrates, educates and serves our growing WNC LGBTQ+ population. Our vision is an inclusive community, where people are embraced for who they are and feel welcomed to engage and contribute. WNC is home to an estimated 35,000 people who identify as LGBTQ. We collaborate with WNC’s community service organizations and companies that welcome and serve our community, where family values run deep. “Blue Ridge Pride has been a pillar of LGBTQIA community for many years in Western North Carolina. Whether it be the many communitybuilding events that they offer, the many community-based programs or the virtual community center, they have devoted time and love into making WNC a more inclusive, equitable and engaged community.” — Zack Schmitt, Asheville blueridgepride.org • 828-476-8577

Council on Aging of Buncombe County, Inc. Buncombe County is aging rapidly, and we need help to promote the dignity, independence and well-being of adults through service, education and advocacy. We combat key issues that seniors face — isolation, safety, housing, transportation and hidden hunger. Help us provide Medicare counseling, support to caregivers, grab bars, food to the homebound and more. By choosing COA, YOU transform lives. “I am 66, disabled with the loss of my leg. I have other serious, compromised medical conditions and live off disability income. The good Lord recently brought your fantastic [food] programs into my life ... a total blessing that I cannot be more grateful for. The hot meals are absolutely fantastic and have become my main meal now five days a week. The weekly bag groceries are also great.” — George B. coabc.org • 828-277-8288

The Mediation Center Since 1984, the Mediation Center has helped community members find common ground and a way through difficult and stressful conflict. Participants are families, youths, neighbors and organizations, as well as people impacted by incarceration, who work through conflict and reach agreements on their own terms. The Mediation Center also provides supervised child visitation to ensure children can stay connected to both of their parents despite past violence or abuse. By helping community members resolve conflict, the Mediation Center creates a safer and more peaceful community for everyone. “This issue had been going on for a while, and it just seemed like nothing would come of doing mediation — but I was really surprised! We actually reached some meaningful agreements!” — Community mediation participant mediatewnc.org • 828-251-6089

Working Wheels A functioning vehicle opens the doors to further education, better employment opportunities and an improved quality of life. Working Wheels provides affordable, reliable transportation to local families through our Vehicle Purchase and Vehicle Repair programs. Donate your car or donate money to the Repair Fund and significantly change the life of a local family. It is not just a tax deduction, but a step toward independence for a member of our community. “When we bought a new family car, we had a decision to make: We could trade in our used car for a marginal, short-term gain for our family alone, or we could donate the used car to Working Wheels for a significant, long-term gain for a participating family. We learned what a difference owning a car could make in the lives of participants, increasing their career opportunities and earning potential while reducing their commute times to allow for more quality time with their families. The choice was clear!” — Janice and Russell, vehicle donors workingwheelswnc.org • 828-633-6888

WNC Superheroes We prevent one-time emergencies from becoming long-term struggles by using crowdfunding. A large portion of the WNC community lives on the financial edge. Without immediate help, a tough situation can turn into a catastrophic one. One missed rent payment due to illness can spiral into homelessness. Sudden car trouble can result in unemployment due to lack of transportation. When our partner agencies have a client whose path is blocked by a one-time emergency, we share the case to our network of crowdfunding donors. Our goal is to enrich the lives of the residents, allowing them to reach their highest potential. “Full Moon Farm is my home away from home. It is a sanctuary not only for wolfdogs, but for humans as well. My first visit, I was greeted with happy, tired faces of volunteers who make a difference in the wolfdog community and help educate people about these animals. They do this out of love. I have come to the farm for almost 10 years. I have loved each moment. Forestland owners and local communities benefit from EcoForesters’ ability to develop and implement forest stewardship strategies that promote future forest sustainability and resiliency. Through community forestry programs, landowner workshops and innovative stewardship collaborations, EcoForesters emphasizes sound ecological management. We are actively making positive impacts on the Appalachian landscape while still helping landowners achieve their individual management objectives. “This land is part of our history and one of the things that has kept our family together. Our thought had been to save the land, not use it, but you showed us a way, through active stewardship, to do both — and this should make it easier for coming generations to be able to hold onto the land.” — Marcella H., Jackson County ecoforesters.org • 828-484-6842 • info@ecoforesters.org

Environmental Quality Institute Since 1990, EQI and our volunteers have monitored water quality in WNC streams and lakes. Data from our VWIN and SMIE programs provide current and trend conditions at over 175 sites in the region. We partner with local governments and nonprofits to identify waterways in need of protection and restoration and to justify grants for water-quality improvements. “It has been my pleasure to work with the good folks at EQI for a decade. We all love rivers and want to be able to support effective programs that promote clean-water initiatives. In my opinion, the best way to do that is to get people in the streams of Western N.C. and to teach them how streams work. They have been collecting data for over 31 years and documenting how the quality of our streams has changed. ...There is no other program that’s even close to this.” — David Penrose, entomologist, past president of the Society for Freshwater Science eqilab.org • 828-357-7411

Green Built Alliance supports real-world investments in that future with its work.” — Robin Cape, real estate agent Greenbuilt.org • 828-254-1995 • info@greenbuilt.org

ENVIRONMENT

MountainTrue MountainTrue champions resilient forests, clean waters and healthy communities in the Southern Blue Ridge. Our members and supporters work to foster thriving communities that sustain each other and our natural environment. To achieve this, MountainTrue empowers residents throughout the region to engage in community planning, policy and project advocacy, and on-the-ground projects. “We support MountainTrue and our local riverkeepers because it can be easy to forget the power and sensitivity of our rivers. As a business on the river that benefits from the river, it is perhaps easier for us to be reminded of its importance daily. The local waterways are the centerpiece to how and where we farm throughout the mountains, and making sure they are respected and supported is critical. If not us, then who?” — Lauren and Chris, Plē b Urban Winery mountaintrue.org • 828-258-8737

RiverLink RiverLink champions the environmental and economic vitality of the French Broad River and its watershed. Each year, we educate thousands of youths and adults about river ecosystems and water quality. We also take on stream restoration projects that reduce stormwater runoff and sediment pollution, and we work with landowners to voluntarily protect and conserve their watershed properties. “A lot of us are feeling strong emotions and looking for ways to take action after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Report on climate change was released in August 2021. Volunteering with RiverLink’s Adopt-A-Storm Drain program is a good way to get involved and help keep our rivers clean as flooding becomes more common with climate change.” — Erica Meier, RiverLink volunteer riverlink.org • 828-252-8474

SOCIAL JUSTICE

Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity brings people together across racial, ethnic, religious and socioeconomic lines to build homes, communities and hope. Buoyed by the belief that everyone deserves a decent place to call home, Asheville Habitat offers affordable home repair and homeownership programs for those who earn less than 80% AMI (area median income) and do not qualify for traditional lending. Our programs create generational wealth-building opportunities for those with limited access to homeownership and help bridge the racial gap in housing. Stable housing is central to thriving communities. An investment in affordable housing is also an investment in education, health care, the environment and much more. “We’re going to be one of the first families here (New Heights), leaving a legacy from generation to generation.” — Leesa Flowers Ashevillehabitat.org • 828-251-5702

Asheville Poverty Initiative Asheville Poverty Initiative aims to build community and promote economic justice. Our 12 Baskets Cafe gathers and distributes rescued food to everyone in the community, regardless of their socioeconomic situation. The Cafe is a powerful program that strives to create alternative social spaces for building relationships and sharing stories between neighbors and across socioeconomic differences, deconstructing stereotypes around poverty. Simply by sharing food with someone you might not otherwise bump into, fear is reduced, stereotypes are dismantled and hope is empowered. “Who is my neighbor? My friend? My colleague? The injured person on the side of the road? Twelve Baskets extends my definition of neighbor in a radically inclusive way. We seek to see people as people, not as labels. Everyone is a have and have-not. We are ideally a community — a neighborhood — where one hand washes the other.” — Tom Burnet, 12 Baskets companion Ashevillepovertyinitiative.org • 828-232-2149
