and how much, from $5 up to as much as you like. As you make your selections, Give!Local’s shopping cart will total what you’ve decided to give to each nonprofit. Before you check out, you will have an opportunity to go back and adjust your amounts if you wish.

Check out and pay with a credit card.

Every penny of your donation goes to the nonprofits you designate — a big thank-you to Blue Mountain Pizza and Mountain Xpress for covering the credit-card fees!

You’re done!

If you donate $25 or more, Give!Local will mail you a voucher book about 10 days afterward containing coupons for goods and services at area businesses. If you give $400 or more, an additional incentive packet will be mailed to you in the new year. And if you give $1,500 or more, we will hand-deliver a box of goodies to your home or business in the new year.

Give!Local Rules

• The minimum combined donation to receive an incentive is $25 — unless you are age 12 or under, in which case it is $5.

• Donations of $25 or more qualify you for drawings. Winners will be chosen by random drawings.

• You can give more than once, but be sure to use the same username and email so we can combine the total of your gifts.

• Incentives are limited in quantity. We will try our darnedest to make sure everyone gets an incentive, but incentives will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and no incentives are guaranteed.

• Only one incentive package per email address, and two incentive packages per household may be provided.

• Children can participate, too! The minimum to earn a Kids Incentive is just $5. Children must have parental approval. Multiple children from one home may give separately, but the incentives will come in one envelope addressed to the parent or guardian (up to four Kids Incentive books per household).

• Your contact information will only be given to the nonprofits you donate to. If you do not wish to be contacted by them, there is an opt-out check box. Note that we need your address in order to deliver your incentives.

• Give!Local is a web-based giving project, but if you prefer to fill out a paper form and write a check instead, there is a paper form at the back of this print guide (p. 47). Participating by check also saves processing fees — so please consider coordinating with us for donations over $3,000 by calling 828-251-1333.

Council on Aging of Buncombe County, Inc.

COAbc promotes the independence, dignity and well-being of adults through service, education and advocacy. With more than 75,000 adults in Buncombe County ages 60-plus, we face a critical need and opportunity for a huge impact on the ability to age in place.

“Over the four or five years that I have asked for assistance and/or references from CoA, you have ALWAYS come through with more than I could have imagined. My life has been improved because of your knowledge, professionalism and kindness. Most recently, staff advocated on my behalf to get housecleaning help and a reduction of my monthly Wi-Fi bill, respectively. Yay! While aging in place is wonderful for me and my independence, it seems issues pop up like mushrooms in the forest.”

All Souls Counseling Center

All Souls Counseling Center (ASCC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide quality mental health counseling to the uninsured and underinsured in Western North Carolina. We offer individual, family, couples and group counseling on a sliding-fee scale, with no one turned away for inability to pay. Through education, awareness and outreach efforts such as our annual Mental Wellness Walk, ASCC provides comprehensive information about mental health resources available in our community and helps to reduce stigma.

“[My therapist] has been a huge blessing in my life. She is as professional as can be, while also making me feel like I’m talking to a friend. She has helped me dig into deep-seated issues and experiences from my past that are affecting me in my day-to-day life, as well as helping me develop an awareness and an acceptance of my feelings, and also healthy habits that allow me to cope with it all. ... I am so grateful for the sliding scale allowing us to do this work.”

Bounty & Soul

Bounty & Soul is a community-based nonprofit that works to connect, share and celebrate nutritious food, education and community. Each week, we distribute over 1,000 boxes of nutritious and farm-fresh foods at our Produce to the People markets and through our Benevolent Box home delivery program, provided for free with love and dignity. We also offer free recipes, cooking demonstrations, yoga and Zumba classes, plus health education.

“I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am. This box of food, which I call a ‘box of gold,’ has helped my family, my kids and grandkids to eat better and feel better. We would not be able to afford all the produce — some of it local and organic — on the fixed budget we are on. We can’t wait to unpack our box of gold each week. ... It’s like Christmas.”

Loving Food Resources

Loving Food Resources is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to show love, compassion and respect to our community, while providing needed food, health and personal-care items to people in the 18 counties of Western North Carolina who are living with HIV/AIDS or are in home hospice care, regardless of diagnosis.

“I am a single grandfather raising my three grandchildren by myself. I am on disability, but it does not go far, even with food stamps. Food stamps do not allow the purchase of personal and household items. If I did not have Loving Food Resources, I could not make ends meet and my growing grandchildren would often go hungry. Loving Food Resources is available on a weekly basis. In addition to basic items, i.e., cereal, soup, peanut butter, tuna and rice, Loving Food Resources provides eggs, bread, meat, fresh produce and personal care and household items. I am able to sleep at night and not worry about where our next meal is coming from.”

NAMI Western Carolina is an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, a nationwide mental health advocacy group dedicated to support, education and advocacy for individuals and families living with mental illness. Our support groups allow everyone to share their experiences and provide hope. Our educational classes and presentations provide up-to-date information about brain disorders, medications and treatment plans. We offer information and contacts for local mental health care.

“My first meeting allowed me to ‘meet’ other caregivers, to see how they were dealing with their situations and to feel a bit more hope. Attending the group was a step toward doing what I knew I needed: to take care of myself, not only my mentally ill loved one. The meeting was co-chaired in an organized, helpful manner.”

Buncombe Partnership for Children

We build a strong foundation for children’s learning and development from birth to kindergarten together with families, educators and the community. Over 90% of children’s brain development happens in their first 2,000 days. Our programs support them during this critical time. Our partnerships strengthen the whole early-childhood system in Buncombe County. We focus on early literacy, children’s health, making child care more affordable and reinforcing the quality of child care through personalized support for early educators.

Caring for Children

Founded in 1975, Caring for Children was originally based on a community need to provide emergency care to children due to abuse and neglect. Over four decades later, Caring for Children has evolved into an organization with diverse programs and services that meet the needs of children and families in Western North Carolina. Caring for Children joined the Eckerd Connects’ family in August 2014, and now our family of services has expanded to include foster care, adoption, workforce development,  transitional services for youths and so much more. “Caring for Children is a blessing to my family. They have helped us by responding to my family crises (they are available to help resolve the issues 24/7). They made us feel valued and supported as parents — they offered us support during the program services and continue to help, even after two years. They helped us with our children’s social and emotional development.”

“More than ever, our youth need adults who show up with love, acceptance and vision for them every day. Creativity & LITERACY

Aurora Studio & Gallery

Aurora Studio & Gallery offers a supportive art space for artists and creatives who have been affected by mental health issues, substance use or being unhoused. Aurora Studio offers a safe, holistic space to create art, while building community. It is a place where creatives may enhance expression and self-confidence; it is often a steppingstone for those who are not ready nor able to afford other arts programs.

“There are so few resources to help folks struggling with mental illness. Most of them come with a huge stigma and reinforce the role of ‘patient’ and the shame that comes with it. I loved coming to art class. I felt like a human being grappling with life challenges in a safe, supportive community instead of a broken freak that no one knows how to fix.”

EcoForesters

EcoForesters is a nonprofit professional forestry organization dedicated to conserving and restoring our Appalachian forests through education and stewardship. Forestland owners and local communities benefit from EcoForesters’ ability to develop and implement forest stewardship strategies that promote future forest sustainability and resiliency. Through community forestry programs, landowner workshops and innovative stewardship collaborations, EcoForesters emphasizes sound ecological management. We are actively making positive impacts on the Appalachian landscape while still helping landowners achieve their individual management objectives.

“This land is part of our history and one of the things that has kept our family together. Our thought had been to save the land, not use it, but you showed us a way, through active stewardship, to do both — and this should make it easier for coming generations to be able to hold onto the land.”

Environmental Quality Institute

Since 1990, EQI and our volunteers have monitored water quality in WNC streams and lakes. Data from our Volunteer Water Information Network and Stream Monitoring Information Exchange programs provide current and trend conditions at about 200 sites in the region. We partner with local governments and nonprofits to identify waterways in need of protection and restoration, and to justify grants for water quality improvements.

“We have had the distinct pleasure of working in partnership with the staff at EQI for many, many years. Their commitment to monitoring our watersheds and providing high-quality data is essential to our mission of improving the impaired and stewarding our pristine waters. Without EQI’s data, we would not be able to provide evidence for our local, state and federal projects.”

Whether it’s trails, old historic farmsteads, wildlife or beautiful views, Friends of the Smokies is working hard to care for our park so we can all enjoy it forever.”

Green Built Alliance

We’re people who care about where we live — our homes, neighborhoods and the planet. We’ve spent more than two decades advancing sustainable living, green building and climate justice through inspired action, community education and collaborative partnerships. We make a difference by leading the clean-energy campaign to transition our county to 100% renewables through Blue Horizons Project; weatherizing low-income homes through Energy Savers Network; certifying new residential construction through Green Built Homes; funding renewable-energy upgrades to local schools and nonprofits through Appalachian Offsets; and educating the public by hosting sustainabilityfocused classes and publishing the annual Green Building Directory magazine.

“Green Built Alliance does more to mitigate climate change and promote social justice than any other organization of its size and, in fact, more than many much larger organizations.”

RiverLink

RiverLink champions the environmental and economic vitality of the French Broad River and its watershed. For over three decades, RiverLink has spearheaded the development of parks and greenways that ensure public access to the French Broad River in perpetuity. Each year, we educate thousands of K-12 students and adults about river ecosystems and water quality. We also undertake stream restoration projects that reduce stormwater runoff and sediment pollution, and we work with landowners to voluntarily protect their properties for land and water conservation values.

“I can remember when the septic trucks would unload along the river at a place that is now a restaurant! But thanks to RiverLink’s careful, thoughtful planning over these last three decades, the French Broad is now a destination — the wonderful amenity it is today.”

Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity

Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity (AAHH) has been bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope for nearly 40 years. Driven by the belief that everyone deserves a decent place to live, AAHH offers affordable homeownership and home repair programs to Buncombe and Madison County residents who earn less than 80% AMI (area median income) and do not qualify for traditional lending. Our programs create generational wealth-building opportunities and help bridge the racial gap in housing.

Stable housing is linked to improved health, better educational outcomes, financial security and greater civic engagement. Invest in safe, affordable housing to help everyone in our community thrive.

“I’ll have a fixed mortgage versus my rent going up every year. I’ll have peace of mind. And they’ll have a yard; my kids never had a yard to play in.”

Asheville Poverty Initiative

Asheville Poverty Initiative

Asheville Poverty Initiative has been working in and around Asheville and Buncombe County for close to a decade. Formally founded in 2016, our two programs, Realities of Poverty Education and 12 Baskets Cafe, provide learning opportunities by creating alternative social spaces for individuals, schools and organizations to learn about the impacts of housing insecurity/homelessness and the importance of food rescue. We are a community where everyone has, and everyone has needs. We invite all to come and be in community so fear can be reduced, abundance experienced and stereotypes dismantled.

“Who is my neighbor? My friend? My colleague? The injured person on the side of the road? Twelve Baskets extends my definition of neighbor in a radically inclusive way. We seek to see people as people, not as labels. Everyone is a have and have-not. We are ideally a community — a neighborhood — where one hand washes the other.”
