Give thanks

We’ve all weathered some significant storms in the past few years, and more may be on the horizon. But despite the conflict, and the anger and the antagonisms in the news, giving and gratitude are still two of the best pathways to personal peace and better communities. Every one of the nonprofits in this guide is locally based and locally focused — and they all could use our help. Please consider giving to as many of these deserving nonprofits as possible. You can also help by spreading the word about Give!Local and thanking the campaign’s sponsors. It takes community to make community.

Give Local

... and have fun doing it!

THANK YOU! would not be what it is without the support of our sponsors.

Likewise, to all Give!Local’s business partners who are generously providing their products, services and discounts: We could not do it without you.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

SOCIAL JUSTICE ABCCM

ABCCM is church-owned and volunteer-driven by 300-plus churches of all denominations and other faith groups. Through the work of volunteers serving as missionaries from those churches and the community, our ministries’ volunteers listen to each person. We offer grace, mercy and lovingkindness, which leads to effective short-term and long-term solutions. ABCCM offers crisis, jail, medical and homeless ministries as well as Veterans Services of the Carolinas. Learn more about each ministry at abccm.org.

“The main help I needed was putting up barriers. Somebody came around with drugs, it was hard to say no. After so many years of doing it, I just got tired. I wasn’t going anywhere. My girlfriend of 14 years always used to tell me, “One of these days, my baby’s going to get off that stuff.” Since she passed, I use that to keep going. Since I’ve been here in these classes and Bible studies, I want that. I want a better life. Me being at the Costello House, they’re giving me that.” — W.M., resident of ABCCM’s Recovery Living Ministry at the Costello House abccm.org • 828-259-5305

Asheville Poverty Initiative

A steadfast presence for over a decade, Asheville Poverty Initiative builds community and promotes economic justice from our community center at State Street and Haywood Road. Our programs, 12 Baskets Café and Realities of Poverty, prioritize inclusivity, abundance and dignity to address hunger, housing and poverty. Everyone has, and everyone has needs. Come for the food; stay for the community.

“12 Baskets Café holds space at the intersection of State Street and Haywood Road for people from every corner. Few things are as vulnerable as showing up hungry, hoping for food and connection. We all wear our needs on our sleeves, and no one is turned away. In a hungry world, 12 Baskets invites everyone who finds their way there to partake in abundance.” — Leslee Johnson, 12 Baskets community member ashevillepovertyinitiative.org • 828-232-2149

I am very grateful and supportive of Blue Ridge Pride’s growing programs and impact, not only in our local community, but also as an example for others who travel here and go back to their communities. Just Economics’ mission is to educate, advocate and organize for a more just and sustainable local economy that works for all in Western North Carolina. Just Economics advances living wages, workers’ rights, affordable housing and public transit. Our team achieves this mission through policy advocacy, living-wage certification for businesses, and grassroots engagement. Just Economics amplifies the voices of the people most impacted by economic injustice to facilitate long-term change. “I had the privilege of being supported by the amazing organization, Just Economics, during my participation in the Voices class, a leadership program for low-wage workers. As a single mother residing in public housing, I shared my firsthand experiences with the ‘benefits cliff.’ My involvement led to an opportunity to join the board, an honor I hold. SOCIAL JUSTICE

Our VOICE

Our VOICE inspires hope and healing while ending sexual violence and human trafficking through education, counseling and advocacy. Our VOICE is Buncombe County’s anti-sexual-violence and anti-humantrafficking advocacy organization. We provide advocacy services to survivors of sexual violence and human trafficking ages 13 and up through a 24-hour crisis hotline and by offering counseling services to survivors free of charge. We simultaneously work to end sexual violence and human trafficking through community education and training programs.

“When I came to Our VOICE, I was skeptical. Decades had passed since my trauma, and I wondered if it was ‘too late’ to start chipping away at the aftereffects that still lingered in my daily life. … Gradually, [my counselor and I] worked together to peel back the layers of my past, and slowly, I began to make connections and feel a sense of peace.” — Counseling client ourvoicenc.org • 24/7 Crisis Line: 828-255-7576; Business line: 828-252-0562

Pisgah Legal Services

Since 1978, Pisgah Legal Services has been a source of hope for people in our mountains who are struggling to make ends meet. We believe that justice is for everyone, not just those who can afford a lawyer. We provide a broad array of free, civil legal aid, anti-poverty advocacy, and access to health care in the 18-county mountain region. Pisgah Legal helps people with low incomes meet basic needs, including protection from domestic violence, preventing homelessness and accessing health care. Each year, Pisgah Legal’s legal advocates and volunteer attorneys help 21,000-plus people across WNC.

“You can feel so beat down, but Pisgah Legal did the opposite: You feel beat down and then they pick you up back up. I’m so overwhelmed with kindness and everything we have been gifted by Pisgah Legal. I felt like they were grabbing my hand and saying, ‘I got you.’” — Dawn, a client helped in a dispute over Supplemental Security Income benefits pisgahlegal.org/give • 828-253-0406

ENVIRONMENT EcoForesters

EcoForesters is a nonprofit professional forestry organization dedicated to conserving and restoring our Appalachian forests through education and stewardship. Forestland owners and local communities benefit from EcoForesters’ ability to develop and implement forest stewardship strategies that promote future forest sustainability and resiliency. Through community forestry programs, landowner workshops and innovative stewardship collaborations, EcoForesters emphasizes sound ecological management. We are actively making positive impacts on the Appalachian landscape while still helping landowners achieve their individual management objectives. “This land is part of our history and one of the things that has kept our family together. Our thought had been to save the land, not use it, but you showed us a way, through active stewardship, to do both—and this should make it easier for coming generations to be able to hold onto the land.” — Marcella H., Jackson County ecoforesters.org • 828-484-6842

Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park assists the National Park Service in its mission to preserve and protect Great Smoky Mountains National Park by raising funds and public awareness, and providing volunteers for needed projects.

Through the education, preservation and maintenance programs, many generations to come will be able to visit and enjoy the park as we do today. RiverLink

RiverLink champions the environmental and economic vitality of the French Broad River and its watershed. For over three decades, RiverLink has spearheaded the development of parks and greenways that ensure public access to the French Broad River in perpetuity. Each year, we educate thousands of K-12 students and adults about river ecosystems and water quality. We also undertake stream restoration projects that reduce stormwater runoff and sediment pollution, and we work with landowners to voluntarily protect their properties for land and water conservation values.

“I remember when scrapped auto bodies, tires and discarded cement were used to ‘stabilize’ the riverbanks, and the stream itself was treated as an open waste-disposal system. But thanks to RiverLink’s efforts over these last three decades, the French Broad has become a destination — worth an estimated $3.8 billion to WNC today.” — Joe Sasfy, co-owner, All Souls Pizza riverlink.org • 828-252-8474

Caring for Children

Founded in 1975, Caring for Children was originally based on a community need to provide emergency care to children due to abuse and neglect. Over four decades later, Caring for Children has evolved into an organization with diverse programs and services that meet the needs of children and families in Western North Carolina. Caring for Children joined the Eckerd Connects’ family in August 2014, and now our family of services has expanded to include foster care, adoption, workforce development, transitional services for youths and so much more.

“Caring for Children is a blessing to my family. They have helped us by responding to my family crises. They are available to help resolve the issues 24/7, making us feel valued and supported as parents. They offered us support during the program services and continue to help even after three years. Friends2Ferals (Buncombe Humane)

Since 2007, our mission has been to provide a long-term solution to feline overpopulation in Buncombe, Henderson and Madison counties. We support a high-volume community cat spay/neuter/vaccinate program for strays and ferals, as well as providing additional veterinary assistance for those in need. Our work has facilitated local shelters and rescues to achieve no-kill status. Due to an explosive increase in assistance requests, we must now utilize private veterinary clinics, in addition to the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance, resulting in an even greater reliance on donations from the public. To date, we have provided services for over 16,000 cats.

“Nancy and Friends2Ferals have helped me with a feral cat that got in my garage crawl space and had kittens. It’s been a process to capture all of them, but without her knowledge and experience, I would not have known what to do! They are a true blessing and pleasure to work with. Mountain Pet Rescue Asheville

Mountain Pet Rescue Asheville is a foster-based animal rescue whose mission is simple, but very important: connecting people with pets in need. Although we do not have a physical animal shelter, we have saved nearly 6,000 animals since our inception in late 2017. We pride ourselves on maximizing lifesaving efforts with minimal resources and plan on continuing to make a huge impact for the pets and people in our community.

“Since I began fostering with Mountain Pet Rescue Asheville, I have had the immense privilege of helping 34 dogs find second chances at a better life. As an avid animal lover, this has been hugely rewarding for me, and I find joy in seeing these pups live happily ever after, especially the two I fell in love with and couldn’t let go. It is such an honor to be a part of their stories and this organization.” — Elizabeth Nelson, dog fosterer mpravl.org • pets@mpravl.org

Unexpectedly, I fully broke down crying as I have been quite stressed about her situation, and Vance could not have been kinder or more understanding. They handled this situation so well, and I felt very grateful for their compassionate response (along with the useful information she provided).” — Amy B. coabc.org • 828-277-8288

The Western Carolina Medical Society advocates for healthy communities, increases access to health care, fights health inequities and promotes wellness throughout Western North Carolina.

“After 11 years as a political prisoner in Vietnam, I faced severe health issues, including PTSD, latent tuberculosis and heavy-metal exposure. Arriving with no resources, I found a vital lifeline in Western Carolina Medical Society’s Project Access. They facilitated medical appointments, health evaluations and hospital visits. They provided me with essential treatment and medications. This program’s dedication to accessible health care is invaluable. I’m profoundly grateful for its positive impact on my life and our community.” — Hoa Duc Ho, Project Access patient mywcms.org • 828-274-2267
