2024 Online Giving Campaign November 1 - December 31

Give thanks, give local ... and have fun doing it!

As our community continues to recover from the effects of Tropical Storm Helene — unprecedented in so many ways — we encourage our readers who are in a position to help to join forces and dig deep. The needs this year may be greater than in previous years, but by giving together, we can make a difference.

Every one of the nonprofits in this guide is locally based and locally focused — and they all could use our help. Please consider giving to as many of these deserving nonprofits as possible. You can also help by spreading the word about Give!Local and thanking the campaign’s sponsors. It takes community to make community.

THE MISSION

Raise funds and awareness for 52 worthy local nonprofits while making philanthropy simple, fun and rewarding, no matter how small or large the gift.

THE METHOD

Offer a single platform that makes end-of-year giving easy with a shopping cart that allows donors to direct a single gift, whether for $5 or thousands of dollars, to just one or to many Give!Local nonprofits.

Reward donors with goodies provided by a wide range of local businesses.

Likewise, to all Give!Local’s business partners who are generously contributing: We could not do it without you.

2024 Guide! Welcome to WNC’s

1 HOW TO ENGAGE

Learn about this year’s 52 participating nonprofits. All of which are listed in this handy print guide, as well as on the Give!Local website at givelocalguide. org. Learn about their missions and how they are helping make this a better community.

2

Go to givelocalguide.org and get started, or fill out page 10 and mail it in.

GIVE!LOCAL RULES

• The minimum donation amount is $5. Donations of $25 or more qualify you for a voucher book of coupons good at local businesses and for drawings in which winners are chosen at random.

• Children can participate, too! It’s never too early to learn the value of giving. The minimum to earn a Kids Incentive is just $5. Children must have parental approval. Multiple children from one home may give separately, but the incentives will come in one envelope addressed to the parent or guardian (up to four Kids Incentive books per household).

• Give!Local is a web-based giving project, but if you prefer to fill out a paper form and write a check instead, that’s fine! There is a paper form on page 10 of this print guide. Paying by check saves processing

fees — so please consider coordinating with us for large donations by calling Xpress at 828-251-1333.

• You can give more than once, but be sure to use the same username and email so we can combine the total of your gifts.

• Only one Give!Local coupon book per email address, and two per household may be provided. Incentives from nonprofits are subject to individual nonprofits’ rules.

• Your contact information will only be given to the nonprofits you donate to. If you do not wish to be contacted by them, there is an opt-out check box when you donate. Note, however, that we need your address in order to send you your incentives.

3

Decide which nonprofits you want to give to and how much.

As you make your selections, Give!Local’s shopping cart will keep track of your allocations. Before you check out, you will have an opportunity to adjust those amounts.

4

Check out and pay with a credit card.

Every penny of your donation goes to the nonprofits you designate — a big thank-you to First Bank and Mountain Xpress for covering all credit-card fees!

5

You’re done!

If you donate $25 or more, Give!Local will mail you a voucher book with coupons for goods and services at area businesses.

The rewards of GIVING

This year has been like no other. This time, we hope your donations will come naturally, without Give!Local’s normal promises of rewards and goodies which are typically provided by our local businesses. This year, those shops are tapped out and exhausted from the flood, from being closed and from getting back on their feet.

This year, we hope you will donate to Give!Local’s nonprofits simply because they need your help.

For now, let your generosity be your biggest reward.

There will be a coupon book — but be patient. Coupons will be mailed December or January, after businesses have time to breathe.

In the meantime, remember that every penny counts, thanks to First Bank and Mountain Xpress, which are covering all the costs of credit card service fees. 100% of your donation goes to the nonprofits of your choice.

NOV. 1DEC. 31

Or send us a check print mail-in donation form

On the lines to the left of each nonprofit’s name, indicate how much you would like to donate to that group. Add all donations together and fill in your total donation amount. Minimum donation to any one group is $1. To be eligible for rewards, your total donations must equal at least $25 (or $5 if you’re 12 or younger). If you do not indicate which nonprofits you want your donation to go to, Mountain Xpress, at its discretion, will give your donation to one or more Give!Local nonprofits.

We offer grace, mercy and lovingkindness, which lead to effective short-term and long-term solutions. ABCCM offers crisis, jail, medical and homeless ministries, as well as Veterans Services of the Carolinas. Learn more about each ministry at our website.

“The people at ABCCM — they showed me how to start life back over again. They guided me, stood beside me and helped me as far as housing and other areas of my life. It’s really been a blessing for me being at the Veterans Restoration Quarters and what ABCCM has done for me.”

EcoForesters

EcoForesters is a nonprofit professional forestry organization dedicated to restoring and conserving our Appalachian forests through education and stewardship. Forestland owners and local communities benefit from EcoForesters’ ability to develop and implement forest stewardship strategies that promote future forest sustainability and resiliency. Through community forestry programs, landowner workshops and innovative stewardship collaborations, EcoForesters emphasizes sound ecological management. We are actively making positive impacts on the Appalachian landscape while still helping landowners achieve their individual management objectives.

“This land is part of our history and one of the things that has kept our family together. Our thought had been to save the land, not use it, but you showed us a way, through active stewardship, to do both — and this should make it easier for coming generations to be able to hold onto the land.”

The Forever Places and Trails Forever programs help preserve the rich history of the families that preceded the park and help ensure sustainable access to the park itself. The needs of maintaining such a treasure are much, and we are thankful to be able to help Friends of the Smokies in the preservation and enhancement of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.”

When you donate to MountainTrue, you become part of a grassroots network protecting the places we love and share. Your support allows us to continue our Swim Guide site monitoring; protect our resilient forests and the precious species that call them home; work to reduce and eliminate single-use plastic throughout our region; and stand up for affordable and sustainable housing and transportation.

“After a waterkeeper kayak trip, I realized the power of MountainTrue’s work. I wanted to walk my talk. As a retired educator, I researched the organization’s past accomplishments. Wow! I wanted my monies to make an effective, long-lasting difference, so I have been a proud supporter. Often, we put Band-Aids on downstream problems, but MountainTrue is a solutionary organization focused on permanent solutions upstream.”

RiverLink

RiverLink promotes the environmental and economic vitality of the French Broad River and its watershed for all. RiverLink accomplishes its mission by providing permanent public access to the river; reclaiming contaminated lands for public enjoyment; restoring local streams; empowering over 1,000 volunteers each year; and annually educating thousands about the importance of a healthy French Broad River watershed.

“I remember when the river district was abandoned warehouses, rusting machinery and piles of trash. But look at it what it grew into — a thriving economic zone graced by a ribbon of parks with dogs, strollers, bikes, Rollerbladers and paddlers enjoying the French Broad River. Transformation takes vision and long-term commitment. I’m grateful to RiverLink, and I know the restoration will continue for Asheville’s riverfront.”

NONPROFITS!

How to a ppl y for next year's Give!Local cam paig n

Enrollment is competitive and each year’s roster of nonprofits changes to keep the program fresh.

Here are Give!Local’s rules and procedures:

1.

We will select the 2025 Give!Local nonprofits based on:

• Their ability to utilize the program;

• Their stated plan of action to make use of the program to raise funds; and

• Our need to maintain a balance of diversity (in organization size, scope and category).

• Past enthusiasm and results, as well as fresh perspective and new direction.

2. We keep the program fresh by rotating the nonprofits involved; selection in previous years does not assure future inclusion so please don’t make Give!Local part of your permanent fundraising plans. If you are selected for 2025, leverage the opportunity the best you can and don’t assume participation in ensuing years.

3. If you are selected to participate in the 2025 Give!Local campaign and accept, we will need some materials from you, including a letter from your board approving your nonprofit’s participation, information about your organization for inclusion in the Give!Local web and print guides and a participation fee. PLEASE NOTE: There is no fee associated with this application; the participation fee is due only if you are invited and agree to participate in Give!Local.

4. The deadline for applying is July 05, 2025. Early applications are encouraged. We will notify the selected nonprofits by early August. We will also select a group of standby organizations, to participate in the event of cancellations.

5. We currently plan to limit the 2025 program to ~50 nonprofits.

6. The Give!Local campaign will be time-intensive for participating nonprofits. Each one will need to develop a strategy for success, which may include some or all of the following: donor incentives, matching grants, fundraising events and business partners. It is imperative that participating organizations be prepared to commit the necessary resources. We have found that without substantial effort on the part of each nonprofit, the program will be ineffective (i.e., not much money will be raised).

7. Give!Local campaign begins Nov. 1, when the campaign’s online platform opens. At about the same time, the Give!Local print guide will be distributed area-wide in Mountain Xpress and at selected additional locations. Extra copies of the print guide will be available for all participating nonprofits as support material to encourage public participation.

If you have questions, email the Give!Local director at

Caring for Children

The Respite Care Program supports families with children facing emotional, behavioral and/or medical health issues or families impacted by risk factors with quality respite services. These funds offer temporary relief to parents, reinforcing developmental skills and reducing negative behaviors. By empowering parents, the program ensures safe, structured and tailored experiences for children.

“I wanted to express my appreciation for Caring for Children/Eckerd. We are in tougher times, where for many families it would come down to choosing between food on the table or paying someone a few hours for them to get a break. I’m disabled, and I have absolutely no family to help. Sometimes just getting a few hours to sit in peace and recharge makes such a difference in our mental health and our daily lives. Caregiver burnout is very real, and this program helps to keep that from happening.”

Friends2Ferals (Buncombe Humane)

Since 2007, our mission has been to provide a long-term solution to feline overpopulation in Buncombe, Henderson and Madison counties. We support a high-volume community cat spay/neuter/vaccinate program for strays and ferals, as well as providing additional veterinary assistance for those in need. Due to an explosive increase in assistance requests, we must now utilize private veterinary clinics, in addition to the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance, resulting in an even greater reliance on donations from the public. To date, we have provided services for over 17,000 cats.

“Upon renting a house, I discovered that the backyard was filled with sick cats and dying kittens. I contacted Friends2Ferals, and they came out immediately to assess the situation. In all, over 65 cats were fixed and received medical care, and about seven litters of kittens were treated and placed with local rescues. I so appreciate everything they did.”

This encourages compassion, which is one of humankind’s most treasured but lost moral characteristics. TOGETHER We're stronger

Organic Growers School

Organic Growers School inspires, educates and supports people to farm, garden and live organically. We envision a thriving food community where small farmers and community-scale growers flourish. We are committed to protecting the environment by advancing and promoting organic growing practices that ensure abundance and climate resilience for the entire bioregion.

“Having gone through both Farm Beginnings and Journeyperson has helped us so much in developing a successful farm business and being in a place where we can provide good food for our community. I’m so grateful to Organic Growers School for all that I learned and for all the ways in which I’ve been able to grow as a farmer — for all of the support of the different aspects of what it takes to run a farm and run a small business.”

Community donations of vehicles and money fuel our programs and help our neighbors overcome financial obstacles. “This vehicle will make a big difference in my life! It will allow me to get my grandchildren to school and myself to work. It will also be a big safety precaution and will help with the burden of getting to and from the grocery store and laundromat by bus. Thank you!”

Loving Food Resources

Loving Food Resources (LFR) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to show love, compassion and respect to our community, while providing needed food, health and personal-care items to people in the 18 counties of Western North Carolina who are living with HIV/AIDS or are in home hospice care, regardless of diagnosis.

“Andy is on Social Security disability due to her HIV status but does not receive food stamps because her disability income is too high. Therefore, Andy needs a food source for herself. Through Western North Carolina Community Health Services, Andy discovered LFR, which she calls ‘the only resource for food for me to stay in good health.’ Andy stressed that the fruit, vegetables and protein that she receives from LFR have helped her control her weight with healthy food and lose 100 pounds. She is grateful to LFR for helping her and her family.“
