“The rhythmic waves of African drumming alerted me that I had almost reached my destination. I was standing on the corner of Eagle Street and South Market Street in downtown Asheville, outside of the YMI, hoping that this new experience would be as exciting as it sounded” – Remy noted as she visited the LEAF Schools & Streets African Dance class. Nadirah Rahman, the Artistic Director of La’Ney West African Dance and Percussion, has taught dance though the public school systems of NC for the past nine years and has danced professionally with several companies. As a teaching artist with LEAF Schools & Streets, Nadirah empowers youth through the arts and musical traditions to enhance self-esteem, educate, and to develop skills, connections, and community. The location of the class, as well as the content, has historical and cultural significance. The YMI has been recognized nationwide as a historical icon, and Nadirah’s classes are a testament to the power of African rhythm and history. Catch Nadirah and her class (and maybe Remy) on the Roots Stage on Sunday at 12:30.

“My children were amazed and awed by all of the excitement and positivity” - LSS Parent 5
